2012 Serenbe Directory Cover Contest
brought to you by the Serenbe Photography Center, Newington Gallery
and Gail Foster of Swanston Gallery
To qualify as cover art you’ll need to send an image or art that depicts life or nature surrounding Serenbe. First and second place winners will have their art placed on the front and back covers of the 2012 Serenbe Directory. The panel of judges will include: Loren Hygema, Stephen Brownlee, Donna Rosser from The Photography Center, Greg from Newington Galleryand Gail Foster from Swanston Gallery. There will be a 1st place selected for the cover and a 2nd place selected for the back cover. The top 5 photographs will be printed (by the Serenbe Photography Center) and hung and for sale at the Blue Eyed Daisy BakeShop. Proceeds from the sale of the photos will go to the Kids Camp Scholarship Fund.

The entry period begins today and ends November 15, 2011.
Winners of the 2012 Serenbe Directory Cover Contest will be chosen on November 20, 2011, and winners will be notified by email. You may submit up to 3 files for the contest.
Make sure your art/photograph meets the following requirements:
JPG or JPEG file format

Total file size must be 5 megabytes (MB) or less.

Send one picture per email and name each email you name and the entry number: your name 1, your name 2, your name 3

Small Print: Selected entries and the entrants' names may be published on the Serenbe Photography Center website and at the discretion of the Serenbe Institute and Serenbe Directory. They will have the nonexclusive, perpetual right to use your image in connection with the contest and promotion of the contest, in any media now or hereafter known, including, but not limited to display at a potential exhibition of winners.
By submitting a photograph to the 2012 Serenbe Directory Contest you warrant that you are the owner of the image, that you alone own the copyright, and that you have obtained any necessary third-party releases.

If your photograph is selected as a winner of the contest, you may be asked to submit a personal release, or an artist release. Releases will be made available to winners of the contest.

Robin Davis, Savannah, Todd Vinson & Wet Plate Collodion

Robin Davis also has an interesting workshop opportunity coming in October. This is something not to be missed and you have plenty of time to plan ahead for this. What would be better than spending a few days in Savannah in October? How about spending those days with Robin Davis, Savannah native. Join Robin October 14 through 16 for Haunted Savannah.

Today in photography there is a buzz about alternative processes. Many photographers experiment with many methods to find something appealing to them and presenting an end product that they love. In recent weeks we have presented workshops by Michael West and the VanDyke Brown tinting process, Tom England has helped you hone your artistis vision, Robin Davis has worked with students to create an interesting portrait.

September 10 & 11 Todd Vinson leads you into the adventure known as Wet Plate Collodion. Todd leads you through an intensive two day hands on workshop to introduce students to the process of wet plate collodion photography with a comtemporary twist.

If you Google for "Wet Plate Collodion Photography" you will find the following on Wikipedia:

In 1851, the Englishman Frederick Scott Archer discovered that collodion could be used as an alternative to egg white (albumen) on glass plates. This also reduced the exposure time when making the image. This became known as the 'wet plate collodion' or 'wet collodion' method. Collodion was also grainless and colorless, and allowed for one of the first high quality duplication processes, also known as negatives. This process also produced positives, the ambrotype and the tintype (also known as 'ferrotype').

The Eyes of His Soul

The Street Sweeper, Barry Goldwater, 1966

Not only a political legend and icon, Barry Goldwater’s mastery of photography garnered him the prestigious honor of having been inducted into the Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain and he was a lifetime member of the Photographic Society of America. With clear vision and an artist’s touch, Barry’s critically acclaimed images earned him international recognition in the elite world of fine art long before fate assigned him a leading role in the political arena. The Gallery at Serenbe, in partnership with the Serenbe Photography Center, is proud to present Barry Goldwater: The Eyes of His Soul Exhibition From September 3 through October 29, 2011.

Goldwater received a camera as a gift from his wife on their first Christmas together. He went on to embrace the hobby and become an accomplished photographer. Goldwater contributed photographs to Arizona Highways and published three books of his photography; People and Places, Barry Goldwater and the Southwest (forward by Ansel Adams), and Delightful Journey.

Barry Goldwater’s photographs were last showcased in Atlanta in 2008. The Gallery at Serenbe will host a special reception, welcoming Goldwater's oldest daughter, Joanne Goldwater, on October 1 from 5pm to 8pm. She will sign copies of the book, The Eyes of His Soul and discuss her father's images with guests. "I am delighted to be a part of this exhibition to show the public my father's works." says Joanne.

Gallery hours during the exhibit are Thursday 10am-5pm, Friday and Saturday 10am to 6pm, and Sunday 1pm to 4pm; other times by appointment by contacting The Gallery at 678-519-1238. This is a unique opportunity to view the exhibit and take home extraordinary work by Goldwater as well as a signed book by daughter Joanne. For the collector of photography it presents the chance to purchase a wonderful piece of art with a great history. Two Exciting Workshops this Weekend!

Both Robin Davis and Michael West will be giving workshops this weekend at Serenbe. In the morning West will demonstrate how to combine modern and vintage printing techniques in this exciting new workshop. Photographer Michael West will guide you thru the basics of creating your own digital negatives and how to tint hand coated, vintage Vandyke Brown prints using inkjet printers.

This one day workshop teaches photographers the basics of combining inkjet color with the vintage Vandyke process and how to create the digital negatives used for this contact print process.

The morning session will be devoted to learning the skills and techniques for making digital negatives and toning prints on inkjet printers from students' own digital photos.

Participants will then learn how to hand coat, properly expose and process the hybrid Van Dyke Brown prints. Everyone will have their own hand-coated vintage print of their work to keep! No previous traditional photographic printing experience is required.

Also, once again Robin Davis leads a wonderful exploration of the narrative portrait, working with the photogenic Serenbe Playhouse actors in their costumed production of “Shipwrecked”. Robin offers this unique opportunity to learn special techniques, often with low lighting, to create images that look much like paintings and illustrations.

Robin Davis is known for her elegant and highly creative on-location portraits, often of models in costume, that evoke stories with overtones of mystery. Her highly successful work has been used to illustrate book covers and in advertising.
Robin will show how low light, stage light, and camera settings and techniques can be used to create mood and mystery – to create visual characters that tell a story. Robin also shows how to direct models most effectively, and design the entire shot using effective backgrounds and other elements to compose a successful and alluring image. Each participant will have the opportunity to work directly with professional actors and models to create and capture their vision of character and story.

This special workshop includes seating at “Shipwrecked,” performed by Serenbe Playhouse in an outdoor evening setting under the full moon. Prior to the play, Robin will present examples of photographs created in low light, and discuss camera settings and her techniques, and then we will work with the actors before and after the performance. In between, the attendees will see the play, which begins at 8:30.

Whether you wish to enhance your theatrical photography skills, learn some great tips to enhance your family portraits, or just watch a master photographer turn reality into magic in front of your eyes - you will thoroughly enjoy your time with Robin Davis.

Both of these workshops will be excellent ways to enhance photographic skills and have a fun unique experience!

Spirits in the Landscape: A Day with Robin Davis

The workshop with Robin Davis was anything but the average workshop. Within minutes of us shooting, Robin had dressed up as an ethereal white goddess to help aid us in our photographic process. We were just doing a practice shoot before the Serenbe Playhouse actors arrived but some of those images turned out phenomenally as we explored blur and panning by elongating the shutter speed. Our images were eerily and ghost-like as Robin swirled around in the lake that was part of the stage for the production of “The Ugly Duckling.” When the actors arrived the real fun began as we grouped the actors who played the animals together in various poses in and around the lake. The leapt and swung through the water and surrounding woods as we further explored how to create motion inside the camera. One of the greatest things taken away form this workshop was how exactly to manage so many models to manipulate and create a desired image in and outside the camera. It was truly an exciting experience as the group worked with seven of the actors in their costumes.

Last Call and a New Listing

This Saturday and Sunday there are two workshops offered at Serenbe Photography Center. On Saturday Robin presents Spirits in the Landscape from 1 to 8pm. Working with the actors from the latest production at The Serenbe Playhouse, you will create beautiful portraits. Workshop participants begin with the play The Ugly Duckling and then move on to photographing the players. After the workshop be sure to stop by The Gallery at Serenbe for the opening of a show featuring photography from SPC instructors.

Just added to the schedule are two half day workshops -- both on July 30. Join Donna Rosser for either or both of these interesting sessions. On Saturday morning from 9 to noon Donna will lead your through the jungle of social networking for the photographer. Donna has been blogging since 2007 and is active on Facebook and Twitter. Her blog is even available for subscription via Kindle at Amazon.com

In the afternoon the focus is on preparing for a portfolio review. If you have been considering this next step for your photography, this is the workshop for you. Donna has been involved in reviews from gallery owners, publishers, collectors, noted photographers, and those in the academic area of photography. Even if you are not considering a formal portfolio review, this workshop is filled with information you can use in building a solid body of work and your presentation of it. Handout materials will be provided in both of Donna's workshops.

HDR, A Nature Walk, and Camp

Explore High Dynamic Range photography with Mike Nalley, July 23 9am to 5pm.

Class fee is $60 for morning session or $60 for the afternoon session

Creating an HDR image starts with properly exposing a scene that is a good candidate for the HDR treatment. Mike will show you how to identify good scenes for HDR and how to create properly bracketed exposures to capture the necessary shots to construct the HDR image. He will explain the use of Photomatix Pro 4 and how to use Lightroom for the finishing touches. Mike will also demonstrate how he uses Photoshop and Topaz Adjust.

Mike Nalley is a fine art photographer in Metro Atlanta. He is currently working his "Last Exit" project to show the beauty in the abandoned homes and spaces around the Southeastern US.

July 17, 8:45am to 12:30pm, Take a Nature Walk with Kathryn Kolb. This half-day session will help you see better with the camera what you see with your eye. Leran to hone your vision to the selected elements to your selected scene. The cost of this event is $55.

1st Open Competition Scavenger Hunt

If you could not make it to the Serenbe Photography Center last Saturday -- you missed a great event. Approximately 50 photographers from the metro Atlanta area arrived with empty memory cards and full batteries ready to tackle the list of six topics. Shooting began at 9:15 and continued steady until lunch time. The photographers returned to the center and spent the next hour or so editing their work.

After editing the individuals or teams submitted one photo per category to the judges. Then the photographers were off for a great lunch in Serenbe. The awards and prizes were given out during a slideshow of the winning images and all submitted photos.

Robin Davis is known for her elegant and highly creative and on location portraits. Explore Adobe Photoshop's capabilities to modify and edit digital photographs. Learn how to use layers, channels, masks, and other techniques. Adjust the contrast, brightness, tonality, color and all other visual parameters of the creative image.

Session 1 is designed for new users. This will center on the basic tools -- what they do and what you can do with them. The second session is for those more advanced users -- but open to all. In this session you will explore more advanced techniques for editing and enhancing photographs.

Please bring a laptop computer -- either Mac or PC and Photoshop (preferable CS4 or CS5).

David Goldsmith came to Atlanta in 1963 to join the Chemistry Department at Emory University. He has been an active photographer since childhood and is frequently asked how an early interest and education in art could lead to a career in science. For David the connection has always been a natural one -- organic chemistry is a science that employs a graphical language and is based in architectural and three-dimensional concepts.

The Open Competition is a scavenger hunt format open to all photographers. Photographers may enter individually or form teams with up to 5 members. Each player or team will select one best image from each 6 assignment categories to submit to the judges panel. Every team receives the same assignments and we guarantee that the categories will be challenging and creative -- as well as fun!

Atlanta region photogragphy leader Gittel Price, well known for her great work with Women in Focus and Roswell Photographic Society, as well as other projects, will be guest host.

Photographers will shoot on location in the Serenbe Community in town, farm and rural settings -- categories will draw on diverse locations, people and Serenbe landscape.

1st, 2nd, and 3rd place awards will be given in each of the 6 categories.

One best overall trophy will be presents to the individual or team whose collective submissions in all categories are judged the best.

A wide variety of door prizes and awards will be given by Serenbe shops and restaurants, Showcase Photographics, Dogwood Gallery, The Gallery at Serenbe, and SPC Print Studio.

Schedule:

Has your photography experience been limited to digital only? Are you a photographer who used to enjoy watching the image appear in the developing solution? Join instructor Stephen Brownlee and learn, or relearn, the art of producing fine black and white prints the traditional way.

You will learn doging and burning. You will learn how to evaluate the tonal relationships within the print. Explore the art of split contrast printing on variable contrast paper and creating a print recipe so the print can be duplicated in the future. Learn how to selenium tone and to archivally wash and dry prints.

On the Flint With Peter Essick

June 4 -- spend the day with National Geographic environmental photographer, Peter Essick. Spend the day on a shoot at several beautiful locations on the Flint River. Georgia Conservancy hosts and senior VP Allie Kelly will brief the group during lunch on key river conditions and issues. Your photographs could be selected to helg the conservancy in its effort to stop the proposed damming of the Flint. This is an SPC "Eye on the World" workshop.

For the past 23 years, Peter Essick has worked as a free lance photographer. His main client has been National Georgraphic magazine. Essick has produced more than 30 stories for the magazine on a variety of topics.

June 11 is the 1st Annual Serenbe Photography Center Open Competition. The competition is in scavenger hunt format and open to all photographers -- sign up as an individual or a group.

Spring Photography Events

If you talk to photographers in Atlanta they will tell you that fall -- and particularly October -- is a heavy photography time in the area. That is very true -- Atlanta Celebrates Photography cranks up all over during late September through October. If you think that not much happens during the spring -- then you need to check around.

Saturday April 23 at 11am is the closing event for the Steven Lawson exhibit, Motion Pictures: Change by Degrees at Lumiere Gallery. This event concludes at noon giving those interested time to attend the Kerry Skarbakka/Michael Rooks event at Hagedorn Gallery.

Saturday April 30 at 11 am is another event at Lumiere; Motion Pictures: Equilibrium, photography by John Kolkin opens with the artist's talk. Following this event, at Dogwood Gallery in Tyrone, at the Nature Undisturbed exhibit is a panel discussion on collecting photography moderated by Susan Todd-Raque. The panel includes Lucinda Bunnen, Kathryn Kolb, and Brett Abbott.

Viewing photography, attending artists' talks, and listening to a panel can inspire any photographer to get out and make some photos. Also inspiring is the line up of workshops at Serenbe Photography Center during the next few weeks. If you are a beginner there is a class for you. If Lightroom is something you are interested in but you need a bit of instructions -- we have a class. There is even something for those adventurous printers -- printing on acrylic or aluminum. Or, if you still love the darkroom, how about learning the fine art of the black and white print? These are just the offerings through May at the center. Check out the website for these and more. Before we get into the blog there are a couple announcements:

Save the Date -- June 11, First Annual Serenbe Photography Center Open Competition
the color processor is up and running now through April 20, contact Stephen at the Center to schedule a print time.
Opening Reception for Nature Undisturbed is April 16 at 6pm -- Dogwood Gallery in Tyrone, GA.

With photography you are only as good as your print. In a digital world, many people see your photography on a screen prior to seeing it in print form. Do your prints live up to your digital image? How many times have you seen a photo online or on a friend's computer -- then when you see the actual print it is not as good, crisp, color correct, etc.

When you turn over your printing to another source you are giving up a bit of control. Your print is your reputation and representation to the public. In order to assure the best is out there -- you have to have complete trust in your printer or do it yourself.

Many photographers shy away from the do-it-yourself because they have a small size home printer or have had problems with color calibration between their home printer and their computer. It can be frustrating to spend a lot of time printing photos and have nothing to show for it because you are not happy with any of your prints. It is just as frustrating to spend a lot of money and time uploading them to an online source and when you received them days later -- the color is not correct.

Check out the printing information at Serenbe Photography Center. After a quick tutorial, you can print up to very large size prints on your own -- making sure the color and contrast are correct. Call the Center at 770-463-9098 to learn about the orientation opportunities.

Digital Photography for Beginners still has spaces left -- sign up today online. If you have always wanted to take better photos and to know more about how your camera works, this is the class for you. Thursday evenings in May and the cost is only $100 for 4 sessions.

Spend a day in the lab and learn about printing on acrylic (morning) and aluminum (afternoon). John Clemmer will share with you his knowledge gained through trial and error experiments in printing. These techniques are so fun and unique!

This photography/camera class for children will be offered each month and will evolve with the students' ability, so sign up again and again. An hour and a half will give mom and/or dad just enough time to explore Serenbe.
Today’s children have access to technology much more than we did and will need photography skills. Drop your child/children at the Serenbe Photography Center on a Saturday morning for a basic camera/photography class developed for them. You must pre-register below. Each class is one session. You can sign up for any or all of them. This fun class will teach a bit of composition and then focus on the mechanics of using the child’s camera. Bring his/her fully charged camera with an empty SD card to have plenty of room to store images. We will tour the digital lab, complete a memorable composition exercise and then head out to the Serenbe grounds to shoot. The last 20 minutes will be spent printing 4” x 6" photos and discussing our work. This class is taught by Hazel Berger. She is a floral photographer selling her art at art festivals in the Southeastern United States. She has been shooting photographs for over 25 years. For the past six summers, Hazel has taught children science, photography and journalism as part of summer camps around Atlanta. She is the mother of three school-aged children. Essick shares his seasoned approach to bringing a compelling story home in images, from becoming educated about the special or unique natural and cultural details of the landscape to technical photographic capture expertise - all a part of making meaningful photographs under field conditions.
