Sea Turtles are one of Costa Rica’s iconic species, thanks to several key nesting beaches on its Caribbean and Pacific coastlines. Although sightings cannot be guaranteed, as with all wildlife in Costa Rica, here are some of our top tips to give you the best chance of spotting a sea turtle during your trip.

Responsible Sea Turtle Watching

– Always go with a certified local guide.

– Wear dark clothing and use a red-light torch/headlamp.

– Keep a respectful distance and follow the advice of your guide.

– When working with hatchlings, wear gloves and avoid touching them or trying to “help” them to the ocean.

– Speak with a travel specialist to understand how best to include a visit to a sea turtle nesting site during your trip to Costa Rica

Where to See Turtles in Costa Rica

Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica

Tortuguero National Park

July – October (peak in August and September)
Tortuguero National Park is the most important nesting site of the green turtle (Chelonia mydas) of the Caribbean coast in Tropical America. Night tours with local guides offer the chance to see the natural wonder of sea turtle nesting up close. Hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricate) and leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea) turtles also nest here in smaller numbers.

Further support the protection of sea turtles by visiting the Sea Turtle Conservancy Visitors Center during your stay in Tortuguero.

Sea Turtles in Parismina & Barra del Pacuare

March – July
These quieter communities south of Tortuguero offer a more intimate turtle-watching experience. Leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea), hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricate) and green turtles (Chelonia myda) are found here, with nesting occurring mainly between March and June. Local guides and turtle conservation organizations, such as ASTOP and Pacuare Reserve, protect nests and release hatchlings.

Parismina and Barra del Pacuare are also the first stops of the Camino de Costa Rica, making them important destinations for hikers beginning their cross-country journey through Costa Rica.

Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge

March – July
Located thirty minutes from Puerto Viejo towards the border with Panama, this lesser-visited refuge is a key nesting and feeding site for hawksbill turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata), leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coriacea), and green turtles (Chelonia mydas). The Gandoca-Manzanillo National Wildlife Refuge also has one of the last patches of primary rainforest and a large area of mangroves to explore.

See our The Best of the South Caribbean Coast for more inspiration for exploring this unique part of Costa Rica.

Ostional Wildlife Refuge

Year-round, with peaks between August and December
Ostional is known for the incredible natural phenomenon called the arribada, where tens of thousands of turtles come ashore to nest. During the nesting season, you will be able to see the Leatherback and Pacific Green sea turtles, and most famously, the Olive Ridley sea turtles. Afternoon/evening tours are offered to see nesting sea turtles and also in early morning to witness the hatchlings making their way to the ocean.

Follow the Asociacion de Guias Locales de Ostional for up-to-date-information on sea turtle activity in this region.

Parque Nacional Marino Las Baulas

November – April
Not far from the bustling destination of Tamarindo, Las Baulas National Park includes the beaches of Playa Grande, Playa Ventanas, and Playa Langosta. As the name suggests, Las Baulas (meaning leatherback in Spanish) is a globally significant nesting site for the critically endangered leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) and is also visited by the olive ridley turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea), black turtle (Chelonia agassizii).

It is mandatory to visit with a guide for night walks during nesting season, contact us to help you plan your trip to Las Baulas National Park.

Sea Turtles on the Osa Peninsula

August – April
The most biologically intense place in Costa Rica, the Osa Peninsula is a haven for olive ridley and Pacific green turtles. Beaches like Playa Carate see regular nesting and hatching activity most of the year. With fewer visitors and a deep focus on conservation, this is an ideal location for travelers looking to disconnect and immerse themselves in nature.

Isla Damas Sea Turtle Conservation

June – November
Many visitors to Manuel Antonio explore the mangroves of Isla Damas by boat or kayak, but few know that this is a key area for protecting endangered sea turtles. Conservation groups monitor nests and sometimes allow guided night walks and hatchling releases for those seeking a more low-key, off-the-radar turtle experience.

Visit Turtle Conservation Association of Islas Damas for information on how to support their work.

How did you first hear about Serendipity Adventures?

Tito: I’m from Turrialba, and about 30 years ago, I first came across Serendipity. The word “serendipity” itself wasn’t very common in Spanish, so it was intriguing. The company had a warehouse in downtown Turrialba, and they had a hot air balloon. I remember seeing them fly the balloon when I was in high school and thinking, “Who are these gringos with balloons?”

Later, as I got into river guiding, I started noticing Serendipity’s trips. A friend told me about a guide training school they ran, and about 12 or 13 years ago, I decided to join. That was a major turning point for me. I was already a river guide, but working with Serendipity introduced me to a whole new world—beyond just the river. I learned about guiding, driving, and the service aspect of the job. It was a completely different experience from what I had known before.

So, before joining Serendipity full-time, were you guiding with other companies?

Tito: Yes. At first, I was a river guide working with different companies. My friend Alex Fernández, who was already working at Serendipity, encouraged me to join a week-long training session. I decided to give it a try, and from there, everything changed. Unlike traditional rafting companies that focus solely on navigating the river, Serendipity offered something different—a more personalized experience with deeper interactions between guides and guests. It wasn’t just about rafting; it was about creating an adventure.

What do you think makes a rafting trip with Serendipity different from others?

Tito: The biggest difference is the level of personalization. Most rafting companies are focused on getting down the river as quickly as possible, but with Serendipity, it’s about the journey. We take the time to engage with guests, learn about their perspectives, and introduce them to local culture. Our trips often include visits to Indigenous communities, stops for fishing, and opportunities to simply relax and enjoy the river. Even the food is different—we don’t just offer a sandwich; we provide a full meal. At first, I didn’t fully understand this approach, but over time, I came to appreciate it. Now, I love it.

Were you guiding other rivers in Costa Rica, or just the Pacuare?

Tito: I started with the Pacuare River, but I’ve guided many others, including the Reventazón, which used to be wild with huge rapids. I also expanded beyond rafting, learning other adventure activities like ATV tours, canopy tours, canyoning, and mountain biking. My background in physical education helped because I already had the fitness and training skills. Serendipity allowed me to explore all of these activities and grow as a multi-discipline guide.

You mentioned being a physical education teacher. How did you transition into adventure tourism?

Tito: I studied in San José and later moved back to Turrialba when I met my wife. Teaching was an option, but I didn’t want to be a teacher forever. In the 1980s, when I was a kid, Turrialba was a conservative town. Then, suddenly, all these hippies from California and Colorado arrived, bringing rafting and adventure tourism. At first, locals didn’t understand them, but over time, the industry grew, and Costa Rican river guides emerged. I became part of that second generation of local guides.

Is Turrialba still one of your favorite places in Costa Rica?

Tito: Absolutely. I think Turrialba has so much potential. Unlike La Fortuna or Manuel Antonio, which are very touristy now, Turrialba still feels authentic. Here, you can hike real trails and discover untouched waterfalls. It’s a special place.

Besides rafting, what’s your favorite activity to guide?

Tito: I love all kinds of guiding—mountain biking, kayaking, canyoning—you name it. What I enjoy most is being with people. Guiding is an opportunity to learn as much as it is to teach. I’ve met people from all walks of life, from doctors to farmers, and I get to learn about different cultures and perspectives. Even small things, like learning how different English words are used in the UK versus Canada, make the job interesting.

You’ve traveled a lot. How has that influenced your guiding?

Tito: Traveling opens your mind. I first traveled around Costa Rica as a competitive swimmer when I was a child. Later, I started traveling internationally for tourism work. I’ve been to Slovenia, Italy, Austria, the UK, and many other places. One of my favorite cities is Sheffield in northern England. Traveling helps me relate better to guests because I understand different cultures and perspectives. It also reinforces the idea that there’s no single ‘right’ way to do things—just different ways.

What do you think makes Costa Rica a special destination?

Tito: The people. Costa Ricans are warm and expressive. I think it’s because we haven’t had an army for generations, so our culture is centered around peace and communication. We also have a deep respect for the environment. Everywhere you go, people are recycling, taking care of nature, and making conservation a priority. Visitors notice this, and it makes Costa Rica stand out.

What’s your next trip with Serendipity?

Tito: Tomorrow! I’m guiding a couple of guests, and we’re visiting some new hotels we haven’t worked with before. I love experiencing new places and meeting new people. Every trip is a chance to learn and grow, and that’s what makes this job so rewarding.

The South Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica is unlike any other part of the country. Unlike the more developed Pacific Coast, the South Caribbean offers a laid-back escape, with some of the most picturesque beaches in the country, bordered by dense rainforest teeming with wildlife.

Stretching from the port town of Limón to the border with Panama, the South Caribbean includes popular spots such as Cahuita, Puerto Viejo, and Manzanillo.

At Serendipity, we love sharing the South Caribbean with our travelers and often include a dedicated local guide with your visit to help you discover the unique culture of this vibrant region. For travelers who prefer to go it alone, we have the following recommendations…

Traveling to the South Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica

Your travel specialist will be able to advise the best way to travel to the South Caribbean during your Costa Rican vacation. Traveling to and from the Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO) is possible in one day, however, there are many factors to consider, including time of day, the route, and whether you are traveling by car, boat, bus or plane. Below are some general recommendations that are important to take into account when planning your visit.

1. Consider breaking your journey with another destination. Turrialba is ideally located between San José and the Caribbean Coast. You can stay overnight or take a few days to explore this off-the-beaten-track destination. Raft on the famous Pacuare River, rappel down hidden waterfalls, hike the Turrialba Volcano, visit the Guayabo National Monument, and more…

2. If you are short on time, domestic flights are available from SJO to Limon Airport (LIO). From there, you can pick up a rental vehicle or meet a transfer service to take you the rest of the way.

3. Travelers often visit Tortuguero National Park either before or after their time on the South Caribbean Coast. We can arrange a land and boat transfer to ensure a seamless and stress-free journey between these destinations.

4. If you are driving a rental vehicle or traveling by transfer and are looking to get to or from SJO airport the same day, travel early. Allow extra time for unexpected traffic, food, and necessary bathroom breaks. If you have an early international departure flight, or late arrival flight, it is best to stay overnight close to the airport.

When to Visit the South Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica

The South Caribbean Coast has a different weather pattern to the rest of Costa Rica. While much of the country experiences a distinct dry and rainy season, this region often enjoys sunny weather during the traditional rainy season (September and October). However, the best months for visiting are generally February to April and September to October, when the ocean is calm, and the weather is ideal. Our top tip? Take into account when national and school holidays are in Costa Rica, as the South Caribbean is a popular destination for locals looking for a beach break.

Things to Do on the South Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica

1. Exploring Cahuita National Park

Cahuita National Park is unique in that it is the only national park in the country that is run in collaboration with the surrounding community. Your entry fee supports local projects and directly benefits local community members. The park is home to white-sand beaches, coral reefs, and rich biodiversity. Visitors can explore the coastal hiking trail, which offers the chance to see monkeys, sloths, raccoons, and vibrant bird species and snorkel around the protected coral reefs.

2. Kayaking in Punta Uva

Some of our favorite beaches can be found in Punta Uva. If you can tear yourself away from your beach towel, kayaking along the coast and upriver will reward you with amazing wildlife-spotting opportunities. On a good day, you can tick off some of the most iconic wildlife species on your bucket list including toucans, turtles, sloths, monkeys, and more.

3. Beach Hopping Along the Coast

You really are spoilt for choice when it comes to beaches on the South Caribbean Coast. You can rent a bike, drive, or even hop into a tuk-tuk to explore hidden coves, surf spots, and pristine white sand beaches. We’ve already mentioned Punta Uva as one of the most beautiful locations and can also recommend Playa Chiquita and Playa Cocles for a beach day in the tropics.

4. Experience Afro-Caribbean Culture

The influence of Afro-Caribbean culture is present in the music, cuisine, and lifestyle of the South Caribbean. Enjoy authentic dishes like rice and beans cooked in coconut milk, fresh seafood, and spicy jerk chicken at local restaurants. We can even arrange a cooking class if you’d like to learn the secrets behind these tasty recipes!

5. Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge

Less crowded than other national parks, Manzanillo offers a peaceful, immersive nature experience perfect for eco-adventurers. This biodiverse gem is home to rare wildlife like the West Indian manatee, jaguars, and sea turtles. Its pristine beaches make it ideal for snorkeling and swimming, while jungle trails offer excellent hiking and birdwatching.

6. Bribri Indigenous Territory

Bribri is one of eight indigenous groups in Costa Rica. We collaborate with an indigenous female-led organization that helps keep the Bribri traditions, customs, art, gastronomy alive through sustainable tourism. Through their tours, you can learn the process of making artisanal chocolate from cacao, the use of medicinal plants, explore hidden waterfalls, and more.

San José’s parks offer a surprising oasis of greenery and culture amongst the hustle and bustle of Costa Rica’s capital. Each space tells its own story, blending the city’s rich history and growing art scene. If you’re looking for a window into the heart of Costa Rican culture, San José’s parks provide a variety of opportunities to relax, take photos, and soak in the history of the city and beyond.

Parque de España

Parque de España is nestled in the heart of San José. Towering trees provide ample shade, and the park’s intricate ironwork benches invite visitors to sit and take in the surroundings. One of its standout features is the Monument to Spanish poet and playwright Miguel de Cervantes, which celebrates the ties between Costa Rica and Spain. Elsewhere in the park, you will find a bust of Queen Isabella and a statue of Christopher Columbus, recognizing the 500th anniversary of his arrival in Central America. The park’s greenery includes native species, making it a hotspot for nature enthusiasts and bird watchers. It’s also conveniently located near the National Center of Art and Culture, making it an ideal stop for those exploring the city’s cultural landmarks.

Parque Nacional

Just a short walk away is the National Park (Parque Nacional), a historical spot that is a tribute to Costa Rica’s peaceful identity. At its heart stands the Monument to the Heroes of 1856, a dramatic bronze sculpture commemorating the victory against William Walker and his filibuster forces. The park’s pathways wind through manicured lawns, shaded by ancient trees, providing a tranquil escape for locals and visitors alike. This park embodies the pride and resilience of the Costa Rican people and offers a peaceful spot for reflection amidst the city’s hustle.

Parque Morazán

Parque Morazán is another treasure in the city center, known for its iconic Templo de la Música, a neoclassical bandstand that often hosts live performances and cultural events. Surrounded by lush gardens and pathways, the park is a lively spot where locals gather for everything from tai chi sessions to impromptu concerts. Its central location and artistic vibe make it a favorite for those who enjoy soaking up the city’s creative energy.

La Sabana Metropolitan Park

For a taste of local life and expansive green spaces, La Sabana Metropolitan Park is unparalleled. Often referred to as the “lungs of San José,” this sprawling park is a hub for recreation and relaxation. It was once home to Costa Rica’s main International Airport, operating between the 1930s and 1950s before relocating to Alajuela. The building that once served as the main terminal of the airport is now home to the Costa Rican Art Museum (Museo de Arte Costarricense). Joggers, cyclists, and families populate its pathways, while sports enthusiasts can watch or participate in soccer games at the National Stadium, which sits within the park’s boundaries. The lake, picnic areas, and art installations scattered throughout La Sabana make it a perfect spot for a day out in nature.

Parque de la Paz

Parque de la Paz offers a different vibe, with its sprawling open fields and panoramic views of the surrounding cityscape. It’s an ideal spot for kite flying, picnics, or simply basking in the sunshine. The park’s name, translating to “Park of Peace,” reflects Costa Rica’s commitment to tranquility and harmony. Its wide, open spaces are especially popular with families and those looking for a quieter retreat from the urban bustle.

Parque Francia

Another charming destination is Parque Francia, a small park dedicated to celebrating Costa Rica’s relationship with France. Featuring a replica of Marianne, representing The Republic, the daughter of the French Revolution, and beautifully landscaped gardens, it’s a delightful spot for a stroll or a coffee break. The park’s intimate atmosphere and artistic details make it a hidden gem near Barrio Escalante, home to many restaurants and coffee shops including The Garden, Cafeoteca, and Franco.

Plaza de la Cultura

Finally, Plaza de la Cultura serves as a vibrant meeting point for locals and tourists alike. While not a traditional park with greenery, it’s a bustling square that connects visitors to the National Theatre and the Pre-Columbian Gold Museum. The plaza is surrounded by small cafes and street performers, creating a lively atmosphere. It’s the perfect place to people-watch and soak up the city’s vibrant energy.

Embrace the Majesty of Volcán Irazú

Kick off your day trip in Cartago with a visit to Volcán Irazú, Costa Rica’s crown jewel. Towering over 11,000 ft, this active volcano offers jaw-dropping panoramic views. Imagine gazing upon the sprawling Central Valley and even a possible glimpse of the distant Caribbean coast, all from one breathtaking vantage point! But Irazú isn’t just about the views. I live in Cartago and visit this volcano several times a year. It’s very close, making it a great day trip, and the experience is always different. It can be very cold at the top, requiring a sweatshirt and warm pants, and at other times extremely hot. I always get sunburned!

At the trail edge, you can peer into the crater and witness a turquoise lake, a mesmerizing testament to the volcano’s dynamic history. You will also walk on the “beach,” a flat terrace within the greater crater, and climb to the lookout points to spot the country’s other nearby volcanos, including Turrialba Volcano peeking through the clouds. Keep your eyes peeled for unique flora and fauna thriving in this environment and learn about the volcano’s past eruptions through informative displays. You can pay for parking at the visitor center. If you are hungry, you can pick up a snack or a hot drink. Even better, you can plan to stop at one of the small communities on the way back down for a hot coffee or aqua dulce! My favorite is Sueños del Irazú in San Juan de Chicuá. Hot coffee and tortillas de queso con natilla (cheese tortillas with sour cream!) will warm you right up!

Explore the Remains of Sanatorio Duran: A Haunting Legacy

Are you intrigued by history with a touch of mystery? Then a visit to the remains of Sanatorio Duran on the slopes of Irazu Volcano is a must-do on your Cartago itinerary. As you approach this imposing structure, perched at an altitude of over 7,500 feet, imagine the stories it whispers. Built in the early 1900s, this sanatorium served as a beacon of hope for those suffering from tuberculosis, a disease then known as “the white plague.”

Standing amidst the cool mountain air, picture the patients who once resided here, seeking solace and treatment within the sanatorium’s walls. Some say the location itself, nestled amidst the dramatic volcanic landscape with its cool mountain air, was believed to benefit the patients’ health. Explore the skeletal remains of the sanatorium, imagining the lives that once unfolded within its walls. Doctors and nurses worked tirelessly in the sanatorium to help people suffering from tuberculosis for almost 60 years. Personally, this place touches the imagination as I wander the halls and look out the windows over the foggy volcanic hillsides. The remnants of beautiful tile floors contrast with the crumbling architecture. That’s part of the fascination with this unique location! Whether you’re a history buff or simply enjoy a touch of the mysterious, Sanatorio Duran offers a glimpse into a bygone era and a chance to connect with the legacy of this haunting yet fascinating landmark. Maybe it will be the setting for your next novel!

Step Back in Time at the Orosi Historical Church

Next, embark on a historical visit to the Orosi Historical Church, a gem dating back to 1743. This church exemplifies the elegance of Spanish colonial architecture, with its simple yet captivating design crafted from adobe and stone. The Franciscans first came to the area in the late 16th century and founded a religious community, long before constructing the church. The indigenous people had been living in this valley for centuries. To learn more, step inside and be mesmerized by the intricate wooden ceiling and the beautifully crafted altar, a true testament to the craftsmanship of a bygone era. The museum houses artifacts that help illustrate the rich but complicated history of the valley. Learn about its role in the interaction between the indigenous population and the Spanish missionaries, and soak in the rich cultural heritage that resonates within its walls. Don’t miss the annual celebration of the Virgen de la Candelaria, a vibrant festival that draws pilgrims from all corners of Costa Rica. After your spiritual immersion, walk through the charming town of Orosi, where small streets full of shops and surrounding coffee plantations complete this historical tapestry. Take some time to find a great breakfast or lunch. My favorite is the Café y Panaderia Suiza, serving delicious local coffee and strudel in the center of town!

Unravel the Mysteries of Ujarrás and Cartago Ruins

Prepare to be transported back in time as you explore the Ruins of Ujarrás. These remnants, dating back to the late 1500s, whisper stories of a once-thriving community. Floods and epidemics forced its abandonment, but the skeletal beauty of the church remains as a haunting reminder of its former glory. Imagine towering arches and walls that stand as a silent testament to a bygone era. Local legends weave a web of intrigue, with stories of miraculous events tied to the church, including its role in repelling pirate attacks! Breathe in the tranquility of the surrounding garden, a peaceful haven for reflection. Exploring these ruins offers a profound glimpse into Costa Rica’s colonial past and the resilience of its people. Nearby, the Orosí River adds a touch of scenic beauty, making this a must-visit for history buffs and nature lovers alike.

Continuing on your historical quest, journey to the Ruins of Cartago, remnants of what was once Costa Rica’s bustling capital. Imagine standing before the ruins of the Santiago Apóstol Church, originally built in the 16th century, a testament to the early days of Spanish settlement. Earthquakes may have toppled its walls, but the simple yet monumental structure still evokes a sense of grandeur. The Ruins of Cartago, located in the heart of Costa Rica’s former capital, are a striking remnant of colonial and early-modern architectural ambition. The site, known as Las Ruinas de la Parroquia, showcases the incomplete remains of a Romanesque Revival church designed by German-born architect Francisco Kurtze in 1862. This distinctive style, rare in Costa Rica, was brought to life by Italian stonemasons who crafted its heavy stone arches and piers. Construction faced repeated setbacks due to devastating earthquakes, culminating in the near-total collapse of the structure in 1910. Local legend attributes the church’s misfortune to a curse said to have been brought on by Padre Sandoval, a priest accused of killing his brother inside the church. Following the final collapse, the town abandoned the project entirely.

Now, let’s shift gears and embrace the spiritual serenity of the Basilica de Los Angeles. This magnificent structure, built between 1639 and 1693, is not just a landmark but a pilgrimage destination for Costa Ricans. Dedicated to the Virgen de los Ángeles, the patron saint of Costa Rica lovingly referred to as La Negrita, the basilica boasts a breathtaking blend of Baroque and Neoclassical architecture. Imagine a grand façade adorned with intricate details and vibrant stained glass leading you to an ornate altar. Witness the deep faith that permeates this sanctuary, a focal point for spiritual life in the country. Thousands flock to the basilica each year, especially during the August 2nd pilgrimage, a vibrant display of devotion. Find solace in the tranquil gardens, adorned with statues and peaceful walkways, perfect for quiet contemplation. We always take a little time to visit the museum below the basilica to see the small metal offerings that the faithful leave in supplication to the beloved virgin. In addition to the rock where the Virgin first appeared to the children, you can visit the spring of holy water. Pilgrims collect the aqua bendito in containers to bring the restorative properties to their loved ones at home.

Immerse Yourself in Biodiversity at Tapantí National Park

Ready for an adventure unlike any other? Then Tapantí National Park awaits! Nestled within the Orosi River Basin, this park is a haven for nature lovers and explorers looking for a day trip in Cartago.

Tapantí National Park offers a chance to encounter a diverse range of mammals, from the large and elusive to the small and playful. The undisputed king of the forest is the Baird’s Tapir, Costa Rica’s largest land mammal. These shy herbivores, resembling small, stout hippos with prehensile snouts, are often found near water sources. Swinging through the canopy, you’re likely to spot troops of White-faced Capuchin monkeys, known for their intelligence and acrobatic prowess. Keep an eye out for other fascinating mammals like the nocturnal Kinkajou, a honey-loving relative of the raccoon, and the Paca, a large rodent similar to a guinea pig. Agile Agoutis, another rodent species, can be seen darting through the undergrowth. For the fortunate few, a rare sighting of a secretive wild cat like the Ocelot or Jaguarundi might occur. Even more elusive are the apex predators of the park, the Puma and the majestic Jaguar, though their presence is a testament to the park’s healthy ecosystem. White-tailed deer and rabbits also inhabit the park, adding to the diversity of mammalian life.

Tapantí is a birdwatcher’s paradise, boasting over 400 recorded species. Among the most sought-after sightings is the Resplendent Quetzal, a bird of breathtaking beauty with iridescent green plumage and long tail feathers. The vibrant colors of Toucans, such as the Emerald Toucanet, add a splash of tropical flair to the forest canopy. Various Trogon species, including the Violaceous Trogon, with its distinctive blue-violet chest, can be spotted perched on branches. Hummingbirds, tiny jewels of the forest, flit among the flowers, with rare species like the Black-bellied Hummingbird and White-bellied Mountain-gem offering a special treat for dedicated birders. Other avian inhabitants include Sparrow Hawks soaring overhead, various Flycatcher species perching on branches, colorful Tanagers adding splashes of color to the foliage, and Woodcreepers spiraling up tree trunks in search of insects. The diverse habitats within the park support a rich avifauna, making it a true birding hotspot.

Beyond mammals and birds, Tapantí National Park shelters a fascinating array of reptiles, amphibians, and insects. The park is home to 28 recorded species of reptiles and amphibians, including various frogs and toads, some with vibrant colors and fascinating life cycles. Snakes, both venomous and non-venomous, also inhabit the park, playing important roles in the ecosystem. The insect life in Tapantí is incredibly diverse, with countless species of butterflies, moths, beetles, and other invertebrates. Among the most impressive is the Thysania agrippina, the largest moth on the American continent, with a wingspan that can reach up to 12 inches. This incredible insect biodiversity contributes significantly to the park’s ecological balance and provides food sources for many of the other animals.

You can hike along diverse trails, ranging from easy strolls to challenging treks that reward you with breathtaking panoramas of the park’s lush landscape. But Tapantí holds more than just stunning scenery. This park is steeped in history, having been home to the indigenous Bribri and Cabécar people for centuries. Immerse yourself in the region’s rich cultural heritage and connect with the untamed beauty of Costa Rica on this unforgettable expedition.

Sergio Calvo meets Serendipity Adventures

Q: How many years have you worked with Serendipity Adventures?
I’ve been with Serendipity for almost ten years now. I can’t remember the exact number, but I know I started right around the time the new office was inaugurated. My first day was in December before the season officially began. Lota and the team held a meeting with all the guides, and we had a mini adventure race. My team won, of course! That was how my journey with Serendipity began, and it’s been an amazing ride ever since.

Q: How did you first hear about Serendipity Adventures?
My brother, José Miguel, was working for Serendipity at the time. He told me about it, and that’s how I joined. I was already familiar with Serendipity, but José Miguel helped me take that first step. I started with canyoning and gradually took on more activities as I grew into the role.

Q: What were you doing before joining Serendipity?
I was already guiding before I joined Serendipity. I worked with other companies around Turrialba, offering tours at places like Guayabo National Monument and coffee farms. I’ve always been connected to this region, and it’s where I started my guiding career.

Growing up in Sitio Mata, Turrialba

Q: Tell us about your connection to Turrialba and Sitio Mata.
Turrialba is home. I’ve lived in Sitio Mata my entire life, and it’s a small, quiet community where everyone knows each other. My house is on our family farm, and it’s so private and peaceful that I often leave my car or house unlocked—it’s that safe here. I love the tranquility, the friendly people, and the connection to nature. I’ll never leave because there’s nowhere else like it for me.

Q: What makes Turrialba so special to you?
It’s the combination of the people and the natural beauty. Turrialba is less crowded than other popular destinations, and it still feels authentic. The private spaces, the small communities, and the rich history make it unique. Plus, the area offers such a variety of activities—from canyoning to coffee tours—that it’s a guide’s dream.

Q: You started with canyoning. What’s the story behind that?
Yes, canyoning was one of my first activities. The location that we use today is part of my family’s property. As kids, we used to climb the waterfalls and explore the area, so it’s been in my blood from the beginning. It’s amazing to see how it’s become a part of Serendipity’s offerings.

What makes guiding with Serendipity so special

Q: Do you remember your first trip with Serendipity?
Oh, absolutely! My first trip was unforgettable. It was a multi-day adventure starting in Turrialba and ending in Guanacaste. One of the clients on that trip was a bit intense, which made it more challenging, but I learned so much. Every trip since then has been different, but that first one will always stand out.

Q: What’s your favorite activity to do with Serendipity?
In the beginning, I was all about the adventure—canyoning, zip lining, and those adrenaline-filled activities. But over the years, I’ve developed a love for nature-based experiences. I enjoy guiding clients through the forest, pointing out wildlife, and sharing my knowledge of plants and animals. Adventure is still a favorite, but nature has taken the top spot for me now.

Q: What makes Serendipity different from other companies?
Serendipity is completely unique. The flexibility we have with trips is so different. Every itinerary is customized to the clients’ preferences, and we can adapt as we go. If someone wants to change plans mid-trip, we can do that. It’s not like other companies where you have to stick to a strict schedule. This flexibility allows both the guides and the clients to truly enjoy the experience.

New places and new faces

Q: Do you have a favorite trip or client experience?
I’ve had so many great experiences, but one family from last year stands out. They were so kind and friendly, and we clicked right away. Even their kids, who were teenagers, were engaged and enthusiastic. Instead of being on their phones, they were talking, laughing, and enjoying every moment. We built a connection that made the trip unforgettable.

Q: What would you say to someone considering Costa Rica as a travel destination?
Costa Rica is perfect for people looking for something different. Many travelers now want to avoid the crowded, well-known spots like Manuel Antonio. They’re seeking unique experiences and less-explored areas. That’s where Serendipity comes in—we take people off the beaten path and show them the real Costa Rica. Whether it’s a secluded beach or a quiet mountain town, there’s something here for everyone.

Q: What’s your next trip with Serendipity?
My next trip starts tomorrow. It’s a seven-day adventure to Fortuna and Monteverde with a solo traveler. Every trip is unique, even if you’re visiting the same places. The weather, the people, and the experiences are always different, and that’s what makes this job so exciting. I’m looking forward to seeing what this trip has in store!

Discover Costa Rica’s Rich Heritage in World-Class Museums

History and culture enthusiasts will find plenty to discover among the area’s world-class museums. The National Museum, housed in a historic fortress, tells the story of Costa Rica’s rich past and features a captivating butterfly garden (mariposario) where you can wander among fluttering beauties. Nearby, the Jade Museum showcases an extensive collection of pre-Columbian jade artifacts and explores ancient indigenous traditions. Another highlight is the Pre-Columbian Gold Museum, located beneath the Plaza de la Cultura, where exquisite gold pieces reflect the craftsmanship and spiritual significance of Costa Rica’s early civilizations. Each museum offers a unique perspective on the country’s heritage and creativity.

Shop for Authentic Souvenirs at the Artisan Market

For those seeking one-of-a-kind souvenirs, the Artisan Market is a must-visit. This colorful marketplace is packed with handcrafted goods, from intricately woven textiles and painted ceramics to wooden carvings and leather goods. The market provides a fantastic opportunity to support local artisans and find authentic Costa Rican keepsakes. Don’t hesitate to strike up conversations with the vendors—they often have fascinating stories about their work and the traditions behind their creations. You can find the Artisan Market very close to Chinatown, so you should definitely try to visit both. Chinatown, as in most cities, offers some of the best restaurants for Asian cuisine. My favorite is Ting Jo, a surprising alternative if you are spending time in San Jose. You can find the lavishly decorated restaurant behind a very ordinary door on a quiet side street. My go-to order is the Kung Pao Chicken!

Finally, as you wander the pedestrian streets, you’ll find a lively mix of cafés, restaurants, and shops. Stop at a boutique to browse for unique clothing or accessories or relax in a café with a cup of Costa Rica’s world-famous coffee. Restaurants in the area offer everything from traditional casados to international cuisine, ensuring a satisfying culinary experience for every taste (take a look at our Recommend Places to Eat in San José!). Whether you’re shopping, dining, or people-watching, the pedestrian zone is a dynamic area where the heart of San José beats the strongest. Our most important tip in this zone of activity is don’t have your phone out. Wait until you are inside a café or shop.

While the pedestrian area in central San José offers a lively introduction to Costa Rica’s culture, nearby neighborhoods like Barrio Escalante and Barrio Amón elevate the city’s culinary and artistic scenes to new heights. Just a short walk or ride away, these areas provide a blend of history, creativity, and amazing food, making them ideal destinations for foodies and those seeking a more relaxed, bohemian atmosphere.

On Karen’s family trip to Costa Rica, the country became more than just a destination—it became a place of unforgettable adventures and deep connections. From her graduation trip in 1999 to returning decades later with her own children, Karen’s experience with Serendipity Adventures is a testament to the power of meaningful travel.

Watch the full interview or read it below.

We’d love for you to kick things off by introducing yourself and telling us where you are right now.

Sure! I’m Karen, and I’m currently in Allen, Texas. I’ve been married since 2002, and my husband and I have two daughters. One is a senior in high school—12th grade—and she just got accepted to her dream university this week!

Congratulations! That’s such exciting news. So, we’re chatting today because you’ve traveled with Serendipity Adventures more than once. Let’s go back to the beginning—how did you first hear about us?

Oh, wow, that was back in 1999. The internet wasn’t what it is now—nothing like it! I think I found Serendipity through some kind of online search, but I remember mailing off for a paper catalog.

I had just graduated college that year, and my parents asked me what I wanted as a graduation gift. I’m an only child, so it’s just the three of us, and I said, “I want to plan a family trip.” I’d always wanted to see a rainforest, so Costa Rica was my top choice.

When the catalog arrived, I remember circling all the activities I wanted to do—hot air ballooning, hiking, you name it. We worked back and forth with someone at Serendipity to customize the trip. Funny enough, when we went back to Costa Rica recently, my mom still had the original itinerary! She’s a keeper.

That’s such a great story. Do you remember much about that first trip?

Oh, absolutely—it’s so vivid. Because it was just the three of us, we had an extra spot in the car, so we ended up with two guides: Felipe and another guide whose name I’m blanking on. They made the trip so much fun. Can you imagine? Two guides and just three travelers!

The itinerary was amazing. We hiked, visited an active volcano, and had dinner at its base while watching the lava flow. We soaked in hot springs, went hot air ballooning, and even rappelled down a quarry. That last activity was the highlight of the trip—and honestly, of our most recent one too!

That trip was such a defining moment for me. I had just graduated and was stepping into adulthood. It felt like the start of something big, not just for me but also for eco-adventure tourism, which was just gaining popularity at the time.

It sounds like that first trip had a profound impact on you. Is that what inspired you to return with your kids?

Definitely. My husband and I always said we’d take the kids once they were old enough to appreciate and remember it. We’re not fancy people, but we’re intentional about spending money on travel because it changes you—it broadens your perspective and makes you a better person.

We even mapped out trips for our kids’ childhoods. We wrote down their ages, school schedules, and what grade they’d be in, then planned trips that aligned with what we wanted them to experience before leaving home. Costa Rica was always on that list.

That’s such a thoughtful approach! Did this recent family trip to Costa Rica meet your expectations?

Oh, it absolutely did. It’s hard to pick a single highlight because every moment felt special. For example, we hiked Cerro Chato in the rain and ate lunch huddled under a tarp. It doesn’t sound glamorous, but the laughter and camaraderie made it unforgettable.

For us, the people we meet on these trips are what make them so memorable. We spent hours in the car joking with our guide, Sergio, even coming up with silly inside jokes and stories. Those are the moments we still talk about as a family.

That connection with people is so special. What do you think sets Serendipity Adventures apart from other travel companies?

It’s the boutique feel. From the start, you’re treated as individuals, not just another booking. The team listens to who you are, what matters to you, and customizes the experience accordingly.

For example, we felt like Sergio was specifically chosen for our family trip to Costa Rica. His personality clicked with ours, and his humor amplified every experience. That matchmaking—pairing the right guide with the right family—is so important. A great guide weaves themselves into the fabric of your experience, creating memories that last a lifetime.

Another thing I love is the flexibility. If you’re driving and want to stop at a roadside stand or try something spontaneous, it’s not a problem. That kind of freedom makes the experience feel truly personalized.

That’s wonderful to hear. Speaking of guides, you mentioned earlier that Sergio felt like part of your family. Can you elaborate on that?

Absolutely. It’s the same feeling we had with Felipe back in 1999. Each trip is unique—a once-in-a-lifetime moment for our family. For the guides, it’s their job, but they make you feel like you’re the only family in the world.

Sergio became part of our family lore. We still talk about the jokes, the adventures, and even a creepy doll we nicknamed Annabelle! Those shared experiences bond you in a way that’s hard to put into words.

That’s so beautiful. Finally, what would you say to someone considering a family trip to Costa Rica?

Do it—and do it with Serendipity Adventures! If you want an immersive experience, this is the way to go. It’s not just about seeing the sights; it’s about connecting with the culture, the people, and the natural beauty.

Things won’t always go as planned, but those unexpected moments can become the most magical. And with a guide like Sergio, you can trust that everything will work out. You’ll be taken care of every step of the way, so all you have to do is enjoy the adventure.

At Serendipity Adventures, we take pride in not only crafting tailormade travel experiences but also nurturing the next generation of tourism professionals. Over the last two months, we have had the privilege of hosting Mariana Zúñiga Madriz, a student from CTP La Suiza, who joined us for an internship focused on Rural Community Tourism.

A Vision for San Antonio de Santa Cruz

¡Hola!

Mariana’s internship revolved around promoting the charm and heritage of our hometown, San Antonio de Santa Cruz. Her goal was to spotlight the town’s natural beauty, rich history, and local culture. San Antonio, a picturesque village, offers visitors a chance to experience Costa Rica’s authentic rural lifestyle.

Her dedication to this project went beyond research; she engaged deeply with the locals, learning their stories and traditions. Her work has not only raised awareness but also strengthened the bond between San Antonio de Santa Cruz and the tourism community.

The Serendipity Adventures team was delighted to support Mariana’s endeavors. Her enthusiasm and fresh perspective enriched our understanding of Rural Tourism. As she expressed, “Agradezco muchísimo al equipo de Serendipity, que me acogió y me brindó su apoyo en estos dos meses de práctica profesional.”

Mariana’s internship culminated in a comprehensive project that we believe will bring long-term benefits to San Antonio and its residents.

As we bid farewell to Mariana, we celebrate her achievements and look forward to seeing her career flourish. Thank you, Mariana, for being part of our team over the last few months. We can’t wait to see how your journey continues!

Back in 2011, Rhonda Raven Neuhaus traveled to Turrialba to embark on an adapted canyoning adventure with Serendipity! Since then, she has been back to meet with us and, on her last visit, she shared valuable insights into accessible travel in Costa Rica and what we can learn from the global disabled community.

Please can you introduce yourself?

I am Rhonda Raven Neuhaus. I am a Disability Rights Attorney and Advocate, which I did for over 20 years. And my primary work right now is that I have a healing practice. As a channel for medical intuitive, energy work, body, mind, spirit, etc.

Where do you live in Costa Rica?

I live in Pérez Zeledon, which is three hours south of San Jose, four hours from the airport, which confounds a lot of my friends that I’m that far from an airport. But to me Pérez is paradise.

How did you hear about Serendipity Adventures?

I wear two prosthetic legs. I was born missing my legs, so it’s all I know. And I messaged maybe half a dozen companies that do travel and tourism and adventure. And I said, I wanted to do canyoning or do something like that. I’ve done rafting, I’ve done other things, but I can’t get my legs wet, and I can’t walk through rivers.

Serendipity was the only outfit or the only organization that said, ‘Come! We want more people with disabilities. We’ve actually been talking about it. This is Serendipity for us as well, because you could help us learn how to be more accessible, how to talk about access and inclusion, and how we can make trips accessible for our clients’.

What was your experience with us like?

Serendipity actually said, we’ll gift you the tour and then you can teach us. It was this beautiful exchange of a day. I took the bus from San Jose. We did the canyoning and the whole team came on the trip, it was me and the Serendipity team, it was wonderful.

There’s always a great team here. I found that whether it is the first, second and third time it is now. And I know it’s not just for me. It’s for every client. It’s for everyone who comes through here because I see who you all are and you’re beautiful people.

What advice can you give to companies working in accessible travel?

You just ask questions and be curious. Honestly, that’s the first thing. Everyone doesn’t have to know everything. You have a ramp outside your office, that’s a huge step to begin with and that you’re asking these questions is a big step.

Then to know what hotels accessible and what attractions are accessible. There are so many things that I do here, and in the world, I’ve been to 65 different countries hundreds of times with repeats. And you’re just conscious of how inaccessible things are when you’re aware of it.

People don’t even realize that everyone’s disability is different. You could have two wheelchair users or two people with prosthetic legs and our access needs are different. To be able to accommodate and just ask the questions to say, okay, what do you need in a trip?

What is it like being part of the disability community in Costa Rica?

I have to tell you; the global disability community is one of the most amazing communities in the world. There are communities of people, centers for independent living, and growing movements around the world.

Where I live in Pérez, it was actually the very first independent living center in Costa Rica was created in Pérez. Now, I’m not sure how many, like six, seven, eight now in the country, there could be 50. In the U. S. there’s many in each state, so it’s still growing here, but it’s growing.

There’s now actually a career path for personal care attendants in Costa Rica and I’m affiliated, it’s called Centro Morpho, and they’re it’s a wonderful organization in Pérez.

Have you seen much progress in accessibility in Costa Rica?

Yes and no. Definitely in high tourist areas, restaurants, places that are geared for tourists. There’s a lot more. You’re seeing bathrooms, you’re seeing ramps, you’re seeing more access. In the local communities even in the U.S., things, there’s a long way for us to go everywhere.

What would you like to see in the next 5-10 years regarding accessible travel?

I would love to see everything accessible in the entire world! I would love all people with disabilities to know that they can come to this beautiful country or do whatever it is that they would like to do in their life.

I wear artificial legs, so I can hop into a bus or a cab. There are other disabilities that need different accommodations. I have my things that I need accommodating for. There are resources everywhere. There are people who have this as their passion everywhere in the world and it’s a vibrant amazing community including here in Costa Rica, so I encourage you all to connect with the organizations in Turrialba and San Jose and Pérez and with everything that’s happening here.

Any final words for our audience?

For whoever’s listening who might want to visit Costa Rica, it’s an amazing place and Serendipity wants to make it happen. I’m excited to go again!
