Obama

It's that time of month for my friend Suzanne Cramer to make her monthly debut on my blog. I'm actually blown away by this month's guest post, because I've been considering paying on one of my student loans this year. I'm not entirely sure how I'm going to work that into my monthly budget, so this article really hit home for me. Thanks again Suzanne!

Reduce Student Loan Debt: Thanks President Obama
We all know tuition costs are rising; unemployment is still higher than it should be, and as a young adult these hurdles can be difficult to overcome. Fortunately there are new resources on the horizon to help would be students afford higher education and give them the necessary competitive edge in the job market.

The Cold Hard Facts
Unemployment. The current unemployment rate in the United States is still hovering at around 8.5%--meaning more competition for the few jobs that are out there. This means finding a job even with a college degree is still a challenge. While having a degree can make you more desirable to a potential employer the competition is still stiff.
Student loan debt. The average student loan debt for a college education tops $25,250, according to a report from the Institute for College Access & Success' Project on Student Debt. So is the education relieved worth the debt hanging over your head?

Value of a college degree. But despite the high cost, the value of a college education remains; individuals with a bachelor’s degree now make 84 percent more over a lifetime than those with only a high school diploma. So what is a “would be” student to do? How can they gain the edge without coming out under a mountain of debt?Enter the aid plan by America’s very own President Obama.

President Obama to the Rescue
The statistics don’t lie and the cold hard facts are a grim reality that’s what prompted President Obama to announce a plan to help ease the debt burden of those considering higher education. Here is the low down on the plan...

“Know Before Your Owe”.
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has partnered with the Department of Education to create a form schools will use to clearly disclose what financial aid packages families qualify for so they can compare options and make better-informed enrollment decisions. The goal is to help families understand their estimated financial obligations beyond federal aid.

Income-based monthly payment caps.
An improved income-based repayment (IBR) plan caps monthly student loan payments at 15% of borrowers’ discretionary income, thereby improving their ability to make regular payments. Beginning on July 1, 2014, this amount should reduce to 10%. An estimated 36 million Americans have federal student loan debt, but fewer than 450,000 participate in an IBR plan. The Obama Administration is therefore actively promoting the plan and making it easier for borrowers to participate. Determine whether an IBR is right for you at http://studentaid.ed.gov/ibr.

Loan forgiveness for public service workers.
If a student loan borrower works as a teacher or is employed in some other public service occupation, the person becomes eligible for loan forgiveness under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program, following 10 years of consistent payments. Review this fact sheet for more information.

Consolidate.
Consolidation loans can help borrowers avoid default and streamline repayment processes for outstanding Federal Family Education Loans (FFEL) and Direct Loans, which currently require two separate monthly payments. Qualified borrowers will learn more about this incentive program from the Department of Education beginning in January 2012, and stand to benefit from making only one payment per month instead of two, with the possibility of a limited-time offer to receive small interest-rate reductions.

Tools you can use.
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has launched the Student Debt Repayment Assistant, an online tool to provide struggling borrowers with information on income-based repayment, deferments, and alternative payment programs. The harsh reality of valuing the cost of higher education with the debt incurred is given new hope with the Obama plan. By using the above tools and knowing how and where to get help the reality brightens and so does your future.Have you been plagued with student loan debt? How have you dealt with it and do you think Obama’s plan will help?

Suzanne Bio:
Suzanne writes for Divorce, Debt and Finances and A Straight Talk on Debt. I knew I wanted a newer car ( an 08 or newer) but ended up settling for an 07. I knew I had wanted a four door but ended up settling for a 2. Heck, I thought I wanted a really fast car but ended up with a Hyundai. Sometimes things just work and when you know, you know. That's how it happened with my car and I'm happy I bought it. But, what I'm not happy with now is not having a radio.

I bought the car from an elderly couple who never used the radio. After puchasing the car, I went ahead and tried to play a cd only for the cd player to eat it. No big deal, I told myself. The car is still under warranty and I'll get it replaced. In the mean time, I'll enjoy the radio. Except, for a music buff like me, sometimes the radio isn't so enjoyable. I hear the same songs over and over again, and it's nothing I want to hear in the first place. I miss putting a new mixed cd in my car gor the week. And to be perfectly honest, I had really wanted an MP3 jack in the first place to plug my iPhone into for car rides.

I tried to get the radio fixed this morning but as it turns out, Hyundai radios are only warranted until 36,000 miles or three years. Normal. I'm not as mad as I thought I was going to be, considering I wanted a new car radio anyways. Getting it fixed this morning was just going to prolong that expense. Although I'm not in any rush, I'm hoping by the end of next month I can let myself buy one. I say let myself because I hate parting with money at the moment. That's good, right?

Also, since we're on the topic of fixing Sophia up with a cool radio, can I please mention that I would like my car windows tinted? Lorraine had tinted windows and I'm sincerely spoiled. I live in Las Vegas for crying out loud. It's going to get hot real quick and tinted windows should help with that. Also, I'd like some seat covers. Zebra print and fuzzy, preferrbly. I accidently got NARS eyeliner on my driver seat and anybody who uses NARS knows that's not going to come out.

What have you done to your car? Should I keep driving around with the radio? Is tint a waste?
Serendipity

Is it better to save or to repay debt?

There are real benefits to having savings, such as financial security, peace of mind and a safety net when you need it.

Imagine your circumstances changed - you faced redundancy, had a house fire, or even contracted an illness. No one likes to think about these things, but they could happen to anyone and having some savings could really help in these situations.

Low interest on savings, high interest on debts

However, returns on savings accounts are not too good at the moment. The Bank of England is keeping the base rate low (currently 0.5%) and the interest on savings accounts tends to track the base rate.

There is an argument that if you have debts and are being charged interest, you should use your savings to repay any debt because:

you're being charged interest on your debt,

your savings are earning you less (per pound) than you're being charged.

What would you do in an emergency?

The argument above is perfectly valid, but a bit too simplistic. Imagine you spent all your savings on your debt and then needed to get hold of money quickly - perhaps if your car broke down, your child became ill, or you needed expensive dental work. You might have to borrow more money, and you might have to take on a more expensive debt than the ones you'd just cleared. In fact, at a time like this, you might find it hard to borrow at all.

It is generally advisable to keep some savings back for emergencies or stages in your life when you'll need more money - such as after the birth of a new child, or going into further education.

So you might decide it makes sense to make just the minimum payments towards your debts for the moment, if that's all you can afford without eating into your savings too much.

Basically, using savings to repay debt is advisable in certain circumstances - and in some cases, you might be forced to anyway. However, if it's possible to keep some savings aside and still make some real progress on clearing your debts, then that's a happy medium.

What about equity in your home?

Equity is the difference between the value of your home and the amount you owe on your property. It's an asset that can be considered a form of savings.

If you have equity in your home, bear the following in mind:

If you didn't repay unsecured debts, the court could secure those debts against your property - which you may then be forced to sell, although this is rare.

If you didn't repay debts secured against your home, you could be forced to sell your home.

If you took the IVA (Individual Voluntary Arrangement) route to insolvency, you might have to release equity in your home in the 54th month.

If you entered into bankruptcy, any valuable assets, such as property (or equity) could be taken to repay your debts.

Further reading:

http://www.thinkmoney.com/debt/ - Debt guides and information.

http://www.bankofengland.co.uk/monetarypolicy/decisions/decisions11.htm - The Bank of England’s latest base rate information.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Home_equity - Further information on home equity.

So Glad I Got A Lawyer

I wasn't going to write about this because A.) I don't want anyone to think I'm an ambulance chaser and B.) I don't really think I can talk about it too much besides with my lawyer ( yes I'm turning into one of those people. But you guys, I'm so glad I got a lawyer. I think if I didn't get one, I would actually be out money.
After meeting with my lawyer, they wanted everything I had ever signed from the drivers insurance company. I tore up my apartment looking for paperwork only to realize I some how must have misplaced it or even worse, thrown it away. :( After realizing this, and perhaps beating myself up for it, I started to organize the paperwork I did have. And then, I realized that the company I received workman's comp from to cover my medical costs ( because I was on the clock at work) was trying to get me to sign off my personal injury settlement to them.

I understand they want to be reimbursed for all of the medical costs regarding this, but the insurance company I was going through said those were being settled separately. Now I'm even more confused. I submitted the paperwork to my lawyer and they advised me to no longer have any contact with the other insurance company.

After getting over that, and realizing my lawyers are going to help me, I check the mail today to find something which made me once again angry. I was sent a medical bill from the accident. It turns out, workman's comp did not cover any of the medications I needed from the accident for my injuries. I'm now on the hook for my prescriptions which caused me to see red. I wouldn't have needed these medications if I was never in this stupid accident.

I'm going to call the lawyer on Monday to see how I go about this bill. I don't want to pay for it but I hate having things out in my name. This is so frustrating and continues to be frustrating, all because that idiot decided to do an illegal lane change and hit me.

Serendipity

No ( Low) Spend Challenge- GOAL MET!!!

Thanks everyone for the helpful hints regarding my post about tracking savings. I think I'm really going to give ING a try. I know, I'm way behind the game. I love the idea of a bunch of different sub accounts which is what I'm looking for. Once I accumulate another $1,000 in my savings, I'll be opening one up. But, for right now, a pen and my handy dandy notebook will have to do.

I also wanted to say... I MET MY SAVINGS GOAL TODAY!!!

Today at work, the finance lady mentioned there was an envelope for me in my box. Turns out, I had a mileage reimbursement check waiting for me! It was a significant amount which happily had me over my savings goal. I was also able to send an additional $15 along with that amount which has me currently at $625.36!

So, 17 days into the challenge I'm already over my goal by $25.36. Not too shabby. I still have 24 days left too. Yup, that's right. I decided to extend my challenge by 10 more days to see if I could save that extra $300 bucks. If I can stay on task, I'm going to let myself buy a Keurig. Rambo agreed to pay for half as a gift for Valentine's Day and I still have some gift cards to use up leftover from Christmas which would easily take care of my half.

Just gotta keep my eyes on the prize, right?

Serendipity

How Do You Manage Your Savings Accounts?

As a personal finance blogger, I'm pretty sure people think they can come to me and ask me questions about savings and budgets. And I love answering questions, although I'm not a financial expert or anything. I love helping my readers and people in general. And now I need help! What do I need help with dear readers? I'll tell you and maybe you can give me some suggestions.

1. What is a bank that can give me an awesome savings rate? ING or Ally? Or do you perhaps have another one you can think?

2. What do you do to keep track of different amounts in different savings accounts?

This year, I have a lot of savings goals and will hopefully have the means to keep on task with them. I would like the option to travel some of my savings into an online checking account, such as ING or Ally, depending on the rates offered and the access. I plan on keeping $1,000 in my Wells Fargo savings account for emergencies that I need immediate access to monetary funds. I plan on keeping the rest of my savings away to help ease temptation. I also plan on keeping most of my travel funds here, to help grow interest along with any other savings accounts I would like to start.

I'd also like to know how everyone keeps track of the different amount of funds in different savings accounts. Suggestions? Right now, I'm totally rocking a pink pen and a notebook. It's what's been working for me so far. Well, and besides looking at a big lump sum in my savings account.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Serendipity

Thinking Of Extending The No Spend Challenge...

until February 10th. I was running some numbers with my upcoming paychecks and if I keep doing the no spend/ low spend challenge aka a spending fast, I'd be able to save an additional $400. Wow. All for just extending it 10 more days. Of course, that means out of that paycheck I'd only have $194 or so to cover anything Rambo and I might need grocery/ household expenses wise and miscellaneous items for myself but what's the worse that could happen? I walk away with an extra $300-350? Not too shabby and that's actually what I need to save per month anyways to reach my spending goals.

What do you guys think? Continue on the spending fast for some major results?

Serendipity

No Spend Challenge Updates

Ahem. So, I've been trying to be very frugal this week especially to make up for last week and I did end up with three no spend days ( which is awesome!) but I ended up having to spend money. I've decided to seek representation for my car accident that happened in November and although I don't want to say too much for legal reasons, I feel rather good about it. This is an attorney that I was recommended by the attorney I used to babysit for. He doesn't know a lot about personal injury since his specialty is criminal, but I feel great about the lawyer I met with today! I met with another attorney earlier this week who kinda laughed at me but that's neither here nor there ( PS If you live in Las Vegas, do not go to Richard Harris. End rant).

I brought this up because this week I had to pay for another copy of my police report, I paid to develop photos of my accident, spent a little more on gas driving around town and I also spent money buying coffee for M and I. She has went with me to my consultations because I needed an adult friend to help keep me rational. With that being said, I did not make my $500 goal this paycheck, but I did end up saving a little over $400! And, combined with all of the change I had floating around in my apartment, combined with some gifted cash I had been hanging onto, I was able to deposit over $100 in my savings! So, the amount to date is $520! Woohoo!

Next paycheck will be a little bit tighter to save from since I have bills due and I'm taking a mini road trip with Rambo this weekend, AND I also plan on buying at least my FinConn12 ticket, if not possibly making travel reservations. So, I can't say a certain amount I will save, but I'm hoping I can at least save up $85 to make my goal!

How are you doing this month? Anyone having any challenges?
Serendipity

Dream House, Dream House!

So, I may not be buying a house per say ( it's Rambo), but I sure am having a say to this house! Actually, if anyone asks, I'm buying the house with Rambo. It's no one's business if I'm technically on the mortgage or not, right? But, I'll tell everyone the details on here because it's my personal finance blog and I can.

So, besides all those technicalities, I've been happily house shopping with my man. We've been considering things like square feet, location, and other things, like if it's by a Starbucks or if I can get on the freeway easily. Oh okay, Rambo too. And while we've been looking, I think we had to sort of see what were really non-negotiable items when purchasing a home. And, it's kind of like when I was buying a car. Although I think I have my heart set on one thing, I can really swing either way. Lame.

What I think is really important ( And maybe Rambo too)

Three bedrooms. There maybe only two of us at the moment, but what if we change our mind? And in between that what if time, I'd like to have a kick ass office and a kick ass gamer room. Okay, the gamer room would be Rambo's.

Two bathrooms. A 2 1/2 would be ideal, but two would be perfect. One for guests, one for me! ( PS I could probably only clean the bathroom I use. Sorry Rambo.)

A nice master bathroom. I would like two sinks and a garden tub. Rambo would like a standing shower. Hmph.

A nice kitchen. I don't cook but this could change. Rambo would also like a nice kitchen.

Backyard. In Las Vegas, we don't really have backyards but we could hope.

Access to a pool. It gets really hot and a community pool would be nice, although HOA fees would be more.

Hardwood floors. This is a total Rambo thing, I'm okay with carpet.

One car garage ( at least one car) .

Fireplace ( this is totally me but not a make or break).

So, what do you guys think? What do you want in a "dream house"? Okay, since we can't live on the beach in Malibu, what is reasonable? :) I'd love to hear your wants and musts in a house. Maybe I'm forgetting something?

Serendipity

Me 1, Keurig 0

"Hello, is it me you're looking for?"

I remember the first time I experienced a Keurig. My boss held a Christmas party at his house two years ago and his wife made me hot chocolate. I ended up probably drinking five more hot drinks that night just so I could play with it. I also insisted on making everyone else drinks so I could continue to play with it since I was so fascinated. Fast forward two years later and I still don't have one but I really want one.

For Christmas, I was going to ask Rambo for one and started to browse for sales and coupons so I could prepare him. I ended up wanting perfume and makeup for Christmas so I didn't get one but that hasn't stopped me from wanting one. The yearning got really bad at Target on Saturday night.

There I was, supposedly minding my own business while grocery shopping when Rambo and I walked into the section I cleverly titled "Our Future Life". In this section, there was everything you probably needed if you were at different milestones in you're life, but all in the seasonal section. Maybe it was one of those New Year, New You tactics? There was a home decorating section ( which had the cutest zebra bins!), a section with dog supplies. a baby supply table and then housewares. I'm not sure about the whole baby thing, but I know we'll be getting a dog by the end of the year and we're going to be needing some new housewares but not now. Except, maybe a Keurig.

And did I fail to mention, after awing over the pretty silver Keurig Elite, it came with a free gift card?!?! If you bought the Keurig, you would get a certain amount back on a gift card, depending on what type of Keurig you bought. Umm, hello! I could buy coffee with that! I did remember to check and see what price the Keurig I wanted was when not on sale and it ended up being the same, which made some of that OMG IT'S SUCH A GOOD DEAL PRESSURE go away. I could come in here and buy this Keurig at anytime really.

After, walking around Target, and maybe putting it in my cart at one time, I ended up not buying a Keurig. I really thank the No ( Low) Spending challenge, to keeping me in check. I probably could have swung it since I have some gift cards leftover from Christmas along with a small monetary gift I got from my new boss for Christmas that I hid in my piggy bank ( mental note to deposit that) . But, I didn't. Do I absolutely need one? No, I don't. And that's what the spending challenge is all about. Rambo mentioned he'd help me buy one for Valentine's Day, which kind of helped ease the shopaholic tendencies. For now, I'll just have to keep drinking coffee the way I've been , out of the microwave.

Does anyone else have a Keurig? Are they worth it?

Serendipity

Sunday Night Chit Chat

Every Sunday Carla hosts Sunday Night Chit Chat and I thought it would be fun this week to play along. :)
What are you…

Reading? I am currently reading Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me by Mindy Kaling. This would probably work out nicely if I didn't have 40 new ones to do already.

Looking forward to next week? Payday! Also, I plan on going home for a day with Rambo for a friends birthday. I'm excited Rambo's going and I'm even more excited I don't have to drive there in the dark by myself. Instead, I can do what I prefer to do, which is sit in the passenger seat with a coffee like a princess.

Thankful for today? Rambo. And a job. That is all.

Serendipity

No Spend Challenge Day 5,6 & 7

So, it's been one week of this No ( Low) Spend Challenge, and all I can say is Pshew. I like to think I usually do well with my spending but it seems that because I'm not suppose to be spending, the universe is like, "Nope, you're going to SPEND! Have some more!"

Day Five

No Spend Day!

Day Six

Drinks 40.00

Pizza 15.00

Energy Drinks 3.00

Day Seven

Famous Daves 41.00 ( I KNOW!!!)

Target 51.00 ( groceries and household supplies)

I can't really make excuses because nobody likes to hear those, but I am definitely going to have to be tougher on myself. I bought pizza for the kids at my work who had done their homework all month. I like to reward the homework club for their hard work by getting them pizza every month. But, I'm starting to get tired of buying pizza, hence why I need to see if a restaurant near by is willing to donate it. I had to buy more household items and some groceries at Target to use up what I have at home already, hence more spending there. Everything else was just me pulling out my debit card.

My friend, who was performing in a drag show, gave me free tickets to see him perform on the strip and I of course asked for five so everyone else could go too. The place where he was performing was unfortunately expensive to drink at so I learned my lesson quickly.

And as for eating out? Total face palm. I bought Rambo a gift card to his favorite restaurant for Christmas and he suggested going to eat there after we went and looked at some houses. I figured, why not it's free. So, after we spent the entire afternoon house hunting and we're on the completely other side of town, Rambo suggested a different restaurant to eat at. I exclaimed " WHAT ABOUT THE GIFT CARD?!?!" because A. ) we're only allowed to eat out once this month per eat in month rules and B.) we were going to eat for free, hence it was okay for no spend month. Rambo's response was "What gift card?". This boy was clearly puzzled. He had forgotten all about the gift card and hadn't even grabbed it. After grumbling, we ended up eating at Famous Daves. It was also my turn to pay for eating out I guess. I tend to forget about things like that and just hope it's my turn to get a free meal.

So, after all is said and done, I actually think I can't even do that whole daily money thing. I think I'm negative money now, in regards to my $500 goal. Hopefully, if I have a bunch of no spend days, I'll be able to save at least $450. That should be pretty easy this week, if I really focus and just go straight to work and home. Maybe I'll hide for my lunch breaks?

How's your spending going?

Serendipity

No Spend/ Eat In Month Challenge Updates!

Whew. I've been so busy at work this week that when I come home, I sort of just want to sleep. Yes, you heard that right, me the constant up till 1-3am on a school night has wanted to SLEEP. Oh, I love sleep. It may also have something to do with the fact that all week, I've been getting up half an hour earlier than my normal start time. I knew I was going to try 10 minutes but so far, the half an hour as been working. I even get to sort of enjoy a cup of coffee now before I leave the house. Anyhoo, I bet you're wondering how I'm doing so far with my no ( or low) spend challenge, aren't ya?

Day 3
7-11 $6.59

Day 4
McDonalds 6.58

Making my grand spending total about $178 or so. Although I had went grocery shopping on Monday, I didn't really think about drinks to bring to work. I usually go to the gas station anyways and pick up a .99 ice tea to get me through the day, but I realize this is technically cheating on my eat in challenge because it's sort of like eating out, right? And then I DID cheat yesterday. I received a phone call at home that I had paperwork due in 40 minutes. I was standing at home in my pajamas when I received it. So, needless to say, making sure I grabbed a packed lunch was the least of my worries. Also, I wouldn't have had a chance to put my food in the fridge and was stuck in meetings all day. So, the food would have sat in my car and spoiled anyways.

I looked at my checking account balance and if I didn't spend anything else for an entire week, I'll have hit my $600 savings goal. Yup, you read that right. I don't think this is entirely feasible, since I need to pick up a few things from the grocery store again and I'm taking M out for a drink on Friday ( but a cheap bar drink!) because she needs it. If I can't save the $600 out of this paycheck, I'll at least be able to save $500, no sweat. Which is still pretty impressive!

I like what Carla is doing and rounding her totals up everyday to see her current balance. I think I'll do something similar and try to do it with $100. So, today I currently still have $14.28. That is impressive and do able!

How is everyone's no spend challenge going? Anyone struggling? Anyone with a lot of no spend days yet?

Serendipity

No Spend Challenge Day 1 & 2, Eat In Month Challenge

How's the first day of the new year treating everyone so far? I know yesterday was technically the first day of the year but if you're like me, you take the day to recover from all of the holiday hooplah ;) . Yesterday was also the first day of the No Spend Challenge I'm participating in Carla's blog My 1/2 Dozen Daily and today was the second so I wanted to post my updates. For trying to "no spend" I have uhhhh done some spending. o_O

Day One

Jack In A Box 10.84

Chevron 3.48

Day Two

Target 98.03

Trader Joes 26.41

Fresh N Easy 6.11

Smiths 20. 68

Total= $165.55

I can kind of explain. I had promised my friends on New Years breakfast sandwiches. I don't really remember because it was New Years Eve and I was hanging out with Malibu, but I honored my promise anyways. I also stopped on the way home from the airport and bought Rambo and I something to drink since our house had nothing.

I went to the grocery store(s) today and completely stocked up my cupboards. We were not only out of food and beverages, we were also out of somethings we needed for the house, like dryer sheets and dish soap. Also, I ended up buying myself vitamins. Smiths was having a decent sale and I bought B-12 for energy and Melatonin to help promote rest at night. I am one of those people who over-think at night and I've been really over-thinking about work at night so hopefully this will help.

I spent about half of our grocery budget for the month today and I'm pretty okay with it. I won't need to go grocery shopping for the next two weeks. I also spent a lot ( and am allowing extra for the grocery fund this month) because I'm particpating in... Eat In Month!

My girl Diana over at The Chic Life has a eat in month challenge every January over on her blog. This will be the third year she's holding it and the third year I'm participating. We were allowed to sort of cater some rules to our situations and I plan on eating every meal at or from home. I'll be packing my lunches and snacks so I can't eat out for lunch and plan on eating dinner at home with Rambo. I already said I'd allow myself some Starbucks funds but once I run out, I run out!

Whew. Hopefully I can make it this month and still save my $600. I don't plan on spending anymore today. Instead, I plan on catching up on my work projects I took home over the weekend, making beef stew and bisquits for dinner, and watching Horrible Bosses courtesy of Netflix.

If only every Monday was one spent at home. :)

Serendipity

January Goals/ To Do's

Happy New Year Everybody! Boy oh boy am I glad to turn the page and start a new year. Although this year wasn't the worst I've ever had, it was still definitely an experience and growing pains still persisted. I'm optimistic about 2012 and although worried about somethings, I'm still ready to try to start fresh in some areas. I'm also going to try to stay positive and not worry so much, as well as try to get things done and over with. That is seriously going to be my mentality this month so I don't get behind on anything, especially work wise.

I sat down and read through my 2012 goals and made a lot of goals for the month based off of the list. If I want to accomplish my list, I need to take some baby steps and get started. I also seperated my goals into categories: finances, work, personal and to do.

Finances

Successfully complete no spend challenge month!

Save $600 ( $400 is going in my e-fund, $200 is going into my ( gasp) travel fund!

Make an additional $350 this month on top of my take home pay.

Pay for car registration - $150

Pay for trip back home for Rambo and I.

Pay for FinConn12 early registration ticket. Look into room reservations ( anybody want to be my roommate?)

Work

Finish data entry project. (Done 1/2/11)

Keep on top of new data entry project.

Catch up on grant paperwork and then stay on top of it.

Create paperwork schedule and stick to it as well as weekly to do list. (done 1/5/11. Now to just stick to it)

Seek donor for project.

Work on cleaning schedule.

Personal

Complete the Eat In Month Challenge over on TCL. Will blog more about this later.

Blog 4x a week. (Currently at 4x)

Work out 2x a week.

Wake up 10 minutes earlier every week. I am going to try myself to eventually be up by 8:30am so I can work out before work and I don't have to worry about it afterwards since I get off later than most people. I currently wake up at 9:30am to get out the door by 10:00am so if I woke up an hour earlier, I could squeeze a workout in on the Kinnect and drink some coffee while reading a blog or two in the morning. (currently waking up 1/2 hr earlier.)

Utilize new planner and make weekly to do list in planner.

Read every night for at least an hour ( Sun-Thurs). This will help me make a dent in my reading list for sure.

Everything I have to get done, get it done and over with.

To Do's

Car registration

Make doctor appointment for physical next month.

Get teeth cleaning.

Make appointment for dental checkup.

Take transcripts ( yay they finally come from Arizona!) and shot records to college.

Make ortho appointment.

Finish personal injury claim settlement paperwork. ( I'm getting something back although I'm not entirely sure what yet. Fingers crossed!) (done 1/5/11. Now waiting on them.)

Obviously, I'm going to have tons of time to sit around and eat Ben & Jerrys. ;)

What are you up to this month?

Serendipity

No Spend Challenge Updates

I came up with a list of Needs and Wants.

Needs ( Or Expenses)

-Utilities ( est. $70)

-Cable ( est. $163. Yes, I know this technically isn't a need, but I pay this bill to contribute to household expenses.)

-Car Insurance ( est. $160. If I remember correctly, it's suppose to go down because of my new ride, but we'll see. I'll still plan on $160 for now.)

-Food ( est. $300. I try to keep my spending for groceries and household around $260 a month for two people. Since one of our goals next month is to eat in for every meal and to pack lunch, I'm going to allow $300. Also, we really don't have a lot so we'll be having to restock up on a lot of basics. I hope to meal plan and try not to waste to help offset the costs.)

- Gas ( est. $130. I was spending $160 a month but my new car gets way better gas mileage. So, I'm going to try to cut back a bit.)

-Cell Phone ( est. $78)

Total= $901

Wants ( Things I Don't Really Need)

-Netflix 18.00

New Total= $919.00

I guess I could include some money for misc. expenses but then I think that would kind of deat the purpose, right? Basically, this challenge is about trying to scrimp those pennies and save save save!

Rules/ Guidelines

- No money is to be spent on eating out! My friends are broke anyways and Rambo is going to be buying a house so we should be eating at home to save money.

-Starbucks spending is to be very limited. I'm sure I could cut it out for a month but I'm trying to be very mindful instead of rebounding. I'm thinking $25 per paycheck and once its gone, it's gone.)

- No money is to be spent on clothes or accessories, beauty products, shoes, books, things for the house, etc. I did want to work on my scrapbook so if I want to develop pictures that's okay, but I can't buy additional scrapbook supplies. Make sense?

-Entertainment should be free or cheap. So, I can't go out drinking with my friends at a hot spot on the strip, but if I want to spend a buck or two on a drink that is okay. I can do matinees but not expensive things with a high cover. Basically, I need to come up with stuff to entertain myself. I did want to make a running to do list so I can be so busy the urge doesn't even strike to go shopping!

-Mend, make do or go without. While this saying is kind of rough for me, I'm going to try really hard just to be happy with what I have. I secretly do need another pair of pants to add to my rotation but if I'm going to follow my own advice, meh.

So, let the No Spend Challenge begin!

Serendipity

The No Spend Challenge

After seeing all my purchases for the month of December, I decided Carla's No Spend Challenge was just what I needed to help get 2012 started on the right foot. Carla laid out her rules but she said everyone could make their own to help accomplish what they needed as long as we were doing it for the same reason- to save money/ pay down debt and to curb aimless spending!

What Do I Hope To Accomplish?

Well, I’d like to save $600.00 to help kick my 2012 savings goals, as well as curb the spending I’ve been doing this past month and a half. I’ve seen so many good deals and wanted to take advantage of it all when I should have been saying no! I’ve also been shopping to keep myself “busy” and although a little retail therapy can be good, I’ve been doing too much!
Besides saving $600, I hope to go to home for a weekend for a friends birthday party which might include some spending for accommodations as well as registering my car (est. $150). Also, what about those tentative FinConn12 expenses?

How am I going to accomplish aka The Rules?

Well, I need to make a list of wants vs. needs. After making a list of wants vs. needs, I need to see if there’s A.) Anything to cut and B.) Establish budgets for all categories involved if their variable. For instance, food and gas is a need, since I’m suppose to eat and I need transportation, however I need budgets for both categories so I know what I’m aiming for and I don’t spend recklessly. Every paycheck will have their own unique budget since I prefer to budget that way. I will also be adding new rules here and there, like no eating out, very limited Starbucks spending ( $25.00 per paycheck) and as much free entertainment I can come up with.
Also, like Carla suggested for herself, I’m going to keep a running list of different things I’d like to do that is free or cheap so I can keep myself busy and not tempted to go shopping or anything else as a cure for boredom. I have a feeling Rambo will be keeping my upcoming weekends very busy with his new goal, and I have a lot to get started on for my 12 in 2012. Last but not least, I’ll be bringing my weekly spending reports to keep myself accountable!

Whew. There I said it. Hopefully, I can keep myself accountable, save up those funds I need to and get a head start on the new year!

Anybody else doing the spending fast aka No Spend Challenge?
Serendipity

Rambo's Big Goal For 2012 Is.....

To buy a house! Yup, you read that right. Rambo wants to become a home owner. And hearing this made me want to run for the hills. Actually, I have mixed feelings, as I do with everything in life.

It came to my attention that I am highly indecisive. I mean really, I've probably know that since I was 20. I can never really make a decision and fully commit. I get bored quickly and things rarely hold my attention. I love having my hand in all different kinds of honey pots. I can never fully commit to a purchase without severe anxiety. I realized this full force when car shopping. I can only imagine the anxiety I would feel, scratch that, will feel, when Rambo gets back from vacation.

Rambo is great. He's financially savvy with his money. I mean, he's had some slip ups with some credit cards but he's always able to quickly pay it off when the balance runs high. And it rarely happens. His credit score is something to be jealous of and he lives within his means. He saves and scrimps. I'm really jealous. I wish I was a born saver. Anyways, Rambo has mentioned wanting to buy a house before and then I think the idea re-appeared while he's been away. He said he didn't realize how cheap homes in our area are currently going for due to our economy. It's an amazing investment and one that he's ready to make, which I fully support.

The housing market in Las Vegas is the worst in the nation I do believe, perhaps after Detriot. We've been hit rather hard and our housing prices are really showing for it. Houses that have a last sale price anywhere between 300-400 ,000 are now currently going for 75-150,000 if you look hard enough. We've even found houses we like in our current area ranging from 50-100,000 so the mortgage would be relatively close to what we're paying in rent ( and in even some cases, 200-300 a month less). Our plan is to buy and live in it for at least five years. We're looking for something not huge but not to small either. We're tired of being on top of each other in our small apartment and we'd also like to have some space in case we decided to have a child. We're currently not ready to have children and although we're still not sure what the future holds, we'd like to be prepared somewhat. I just worry about things like higher utilities, taxes on the property and having to be responsible for anything that breaks. Although we've already talked about these things and have a plan, the worrier in me still comes out.

While I'm proud of my man for being ready to take on homeownership, I however am not. We're trying to figure out if theirs any way for the house to be in both of our names, while keeping his name on the mortgage by himself. Why? Although I do know it's a huge investment, there's no way I can apply for a mortgage in my current financial state. Yes, I make a decent income now and yes, I have done wonders with my money since smartening up, I can't be approved due to past mistakes on my credit score. We tried to purchase a house with both of us years ago and they basically laughed at me in the mortgage office. It's been years but the wound is still fresh. We'd be better off putting it in his name only and then just trying to figure out a different way around it. Maybe re-financing in a couple more years?

So, there you have it. Rambo's big goal to become a home owner by May or June at the latest. Does anybody have any tips they woudl like to share or experiences? I have no idea where to even start so I was hoping some of you do!

Serendipity

*editors note* Rambo will happily putting a down payment of 10%. I thought that migiht come up so I'm throwing it out there.

2011 Goals Wrap Up

How did I do in 2011? Well, not as bad as I had orignally thought! :D

Financial
1. Pay Dental Bill $1,080 Paid in full on 1/7/11 for 250 instead! GOAL COMPLETED! (Success!)

2. Build & Maintain E-Fund $1,000 GOAL COMPLETED!
Succes twice! I was able to maintain close to 1,000 is not more for much of the year. I did have to dip into it though and now I'm back down to $600 but hopefully my spending fast next month will knock this back up to my comfortable number. [It's a $1,000 if anyone is wondering. I do plan on adding an additional $1500 and growing it to $2,500 by the end of the year.] )

3.Dental Work $1,000 GOAL COMPLETED!
I ended up only having to pay $500 because my dad's insurance was amazing while I had it for the last eight months of my 25th year of life. Everything is ready to go for my braces in February.

4.Earn $4,000 In Extra Income GOAL COMPLETED!
I earned a little bit over $4,000 I think, thanks to a promotion at work, blog income, odd jobs and babysitting, favors to friends and receiving my tax return. I know you're not suppose to include your tax return because that was originally in your income but I include any found money in this total.

5.Trip To Washington/Oregon $600.00
This was a no go, because my sister ended up coming down here! Hopefully I will see her later this summer when her mom gets married. I would really like to try to take this trip again later this year, but it depends on some other factors as well, like some other trips I'm dying to take. I'd like to say success!

6.Car Fund $1,000 Starting @ 0.00 Currently @ 0.00
No car fundwas saved so no go! I thought if anything happened I could use my e-fund to help out. My car ended up getting totaled so that was also a no go and I ended up paying off my car loan and purchasing a newer car with a lot less miles on it in full with cash!

7. Braces $1450 Starting @ 10.00 Currently @ 0.00
No braces this year. I couldn't save comfortably enough until I was car payment free on my old income and now that I have a new one, it's opened up a lot more possibilities. I also nolonger have a car payment! I'm getting my braces on by the end of February though. ;)

Personal
1. Get Healthy
Uhhh no. I suppose getting healthy and being healthy are really life long achievements you're always aiming for. Although I didn't really achieve this goal so to say, my health didn't necessarily get worse.

2. Have Healthy Relationships
This one was a success! I learned how to stick up for myself and even though that meant cutting out some friends and even some family members, I feel a lot better because of it. Also, Rambo and I started off in a yucky place earlier this year and now we're better than ever! I love him so. I also have started to learn to not self sabotage myself when I want to get out of things when I'm unhappy. Now if I could work on not having mini nervous breakdowns, we'd be all good!

3. Put important things first and challange my positive energy into them.
This is still a work in progress.

4. Be more organized with my life
I can rock a to-do list like no ones business as well as a day planner. So, we're getting somewhere.

5. Try to accomplish more on my 25 in 25 list
Uhhh. I forgot about this one. So no go!

Obviously, I need to figure out how to get my life right about somethings. But, overall, 2011 was pretty darn good!

Thursday Random This & That

-Besides stuff for Christmas dinner and wine I plan on picking up, and a gift card I may or may not get Rambo to put in his stocking ( he announced he had too much stuff last night), I am done Christmas shopping! I ended up buying for a lot more people than I had originally planned for but that's okay. Glad I was able to this year! And this is the first year I've exchanged gifts with my grandparents on my dads side so I'm especially excited.

- Speaking of Christmas shopping, I'm not really sure how much I spent. I, uh, didn't keep very good track. It is what it is I suppose. I don't think I spent a lot, considering how many people I had to buy for, but I did spend more than I was planning to.

- And for some reason, I'm totally down this Chirstmas. I haven't been like this for a couple of years now so it sort of shocks me. I've been under a lot of stress lately regarding a lot of things. My mom passed away two days before Christmas years ago and although I thought I was pretty much over it, it comes back every so often. I think since I've been under a lot of stress this week anyways, ( I made a big mistake at work) it doesn't help. And then Rambo is leaving on Christmas and I won't get to spend New Years Eve with him and I think that might have a lot to do with it. He really helped me get over the scrouge think and it saddens me we won't be together but I know he needs to go visit. I'm being selfless, but I'll still miss him.

- But, it's not all storm clouds! My new car is doing great! The Lost Goat asked more about Sophia and I'll go ahead and tell a bit more. My new car is a 2007 Hyundai Accent 2 door Hatchback. She only has 50,000 miles on it and is currently still under warranty. I bought the car from my friends grandparents. His grandfather is a retired mechanic and takes excellent care of his vehicles. And for a pf twist? He retired when he was 45 due to being good with his money! How's that for inspiration? The car was purchases brand new so it's only had one previous owner ( his grandparents) and I know where it's been. Their very cautious drivers so wear and tear is minimal. I got a really good deal and was able to purchase the car outright, which is what I wanted! Win win!

-And, I can't wait to start my 2012 budget! I have a lot of goals so hopefully, it should really be do able. I just need to stick to my budget and remind myself of the big goals at stake. ( A trip to NYC in early to late fall! W should definitely be going due to his new promotion so I'll have at least one person to share accomadations with! Hopefully, I can hoard comp time and vacation time until then. )

Hows your week going?
Serendipity

I'M CAR DEBT FREE!!!

Meet Sophia!

In a perfect world, I would have paid off Lorraine after my extra paycheck this month and with the help of my tax return. We would still be cruising around, parking next to other Malibu's with chocolate frosting on the seat from W's cake mishap. But, things like accidents happen and all that jazz. In the end, the settlement I was offered for Lorraine was a lot more than what I was expecting. I held on to my guns and was able to pay ( cash ) for another cute little car. And, I was able to pay Lorraine off!!! So you know what this means?

I'M CAR LOAN DEBT FREE!!!

I did it guys! I'm going into 2012 with NO CAR PAYMENT! Is it me you're looking for?

Or, maybe. I'm not quite sure. We'll see what else happens in my car adventure. But, this week I've had some progress! I test drove a car that was recommended to me by a friend last week. Turns out, his grandparents were looking to sell a car! It's a 2007 Hyundai Accent in a really cute blue car that I wasn't so sure about, but it sort of turns out, made me fall in love with it. It has 50,000 miles on it and was previously owned by a mechanic who took really good care of the car. It was in a slight fender bender which ended up with a hood being replaced and an air compressor but that's about it. Because of that though, they are willing to sell it to me $1600 below what the KBB is. For pretty much the exact amount I received from my auto settlement after paying off Lorraine. Yup, Lorraine is paid off!!! Too bad I can't drive her.

Anyhoo, this deal is really good, the only thing I worry about is my led foot. I like to go fast and I don't want to drive a car into the ground because I think I'm speed racer. I know, I have issues. Anyways, the car has only had this owner and they've had no problems with the vehicle at all regarding maintenance. The car has received really high ratings online and a lot of people haven't had issues and rave about the great gas mileage. Also, my car insurance would actually be going down if I purchased this vehicle.

So what do you guys think? My rational adult idea is this:

I go ahead and buy this car, car payment free. I keep it for exactly one year. During this year, because I have no car payment, I can achieve all of my savings goals ( like travel!) and see if I fall in love with the car ( which I think there's a really good chance I might! I saw one on the freeway while driving with Rambo and got excited. ). If worse comes to worse, and I don't fall in love with the car, I can reassess the car market and perhaps buy a new one next year. My hopeful goal is to fall in love with it, and keep it for at least three years because after traveling, I have some other really big savings goals that I need to keep in mind.

So what do you guys think? Has anyone had any luck with accents before? Good gas mileage?

Serendipity

Tuesday Tunes

1. Thanks Nikki for your awesomeness and inspiration!

Lo and behold my awesome goal college for 2012! I have to be perfectly honest. When I sat down to write these goals, I may or may not have bawled a little bit. Not because of goal making ( I love goal making!) but because I wasn't sure where I stood. I had just found out my car was being totaled and I was going to have to look for a new one and I wasn't having it.

You see, a couple of months ago, I declared 2012 the year I traveled! Oh yes, it was going to happen this year. Not only was I going to go see New York City finally, I was going to go places where I hadn't been. I was going to make my mark and add some culture to my life! Unfortunately, I had planned on being able to travel due to the fact my car was going to be paid off. Now, I wasn't so sure and it really saddened me. The thought of not being able to do all of the things I had set my heart on doing. Although as of this writing, I still haven't found a car, I am hopeful to find a car I like and that won't have a car payment. I have plans to go look at a car a friend recommended and I'm hopeful I'll like it, buy it, and be set for the the next three years. *fingers crossed*

Oh yes, those goals. Ahem. 2012 is going to be awesome!

1. Save $2,500 in a travel fund.

Now, $2,500 is what I think I'll need to comfortably go to New York City by myself for a weekend, and some wiggle room to take little trips as they come up ( FinCon12 anyone?). I also go to California with friends throughout the year and I'd like to go visit my sister if she doesn't come down here. I figure $2,500 is a good number to aim for.

2. Make $4,000 in additional income

I made a very similar goal in 2011 and I was able to make it thanks to money made side hustling, blog revenue, random favors from friends, tax refund and my promotion. I'm really going to be looking into making more money this year online, more specifically, my blog. I'm going to be really looking for opportunities, writing positions and anything else that can help me achieve this goal. If anyone has any additional tips for me, I'd love to talk to you!

3. Down payment for my braces ( $750)

Oh I'm doing this with my tax return. I'm pretty excited about finally getting them, although I think I might perhaps have a lisp for a minute. Of course, I'll be making additional payments every month of $80 for the next two years, but I still think that's pretty darn good. And do able.

4. Save an additional $1500 in my e-fund.

If I can do this, I'll have a good chunk of one of my 30 by 30 goals completed ( have six months of living expenses saved up=$7200). Although eventually $10,000 would be ideal, right now I'm shooting for $2,500.

5. Save enough to hurt a little.

I got this from Little Miss Moneybags. She had posted this goal for 2011 and I really loved the thought of it! I sat down about a month ago and realized I could probably save 25% of my income ( if I didn't have a car payment) and I got really excited. Of course, it would involve some scrimping here and there, and really being mindful of purchases, but shouldn't I be doing that anyways? Shouldn't everyone for the most part? I could definitely benefit from less Starbucks and eating out, not to mention retail therapy at Target. Those little purchases add up and they add up quick!

6. Learn how to sew

I've had a sewing machine which is really nice, for a couple of years now. And all it's done is collect dust. I'm seriously not going to lie, Rambo has even used it. Yes, Rambo has taught himself how to sew. I have not. I would love to be able to learn how to sew little things here and there, like an apron or some cute place mats. I also secretly want to learn how to make cute sundresses like my friend's mom can do.

7. Go back to school.

Yup. I graduated with my AA and decided to take a semester off because I was so burnt out. Well, a semester turned into a year and I'm ready to go back! My application is being processed and I'm taking new transcripts along with my shot records to the campus so *fingers crossed* I should be accepted by the end of the month so I can start next semester. Worst case scenario, I take a couple of eight week classes which I'm completely fine with. My goal is to take as many classes online as I can because of work, while being a part time student, at least for spring. I want to ease myself back into it so I don't get overwhelmed and want to quit.

8. Do something everyday for my health

I'm not going to all of a sudden become a runner or someone who eats nothing but organic. That's not me. But, I can do something everyday to help get me healthier than what I currently am. It can be something like taking my vitamins or not eating seconds really. If it's a good choice that benefits my health, I will take advantage. If it's not, I need to really think about that. I want to live a long time and I need to start acting like it.

9. Read 30 books

I love reading and although I try my hardest to make time for it, I get side tracked ( more on that in my next goal). I'm going to read every night for an hour like I did during the summer. It was a nice ritual I got into and it helped me get ready for bed. I also have an every growing list on Goodreads and I'd like to eventually make a dent in it. :)

10. Conquer time management and procrastination

Maybe it's in my blood, maybe it's because my ADD helps me get distracted very easily by shiny things, but I have a hard time focusing and getting things done. Although I'm getting better, I can easily spend a whole day blog jumping and not get anything done. I can also come home and zone out to mindless television like nobodys business when I have a ton of things to get done! It's hard to get things done and to stay on task for me, although I do try. I don't think I try necessarily hard enough sometimes and let myself flounder. I need to not do that.

11. Set new blogging goals- and achieve them.

I always tell myself I want to be a better blogger but I don't really address how I'm going to get there. What is it to be a better blogger anyways? More money? More readers? Although I'd love to make more blogging revenue ( heck, that's even a goal of mine) and I'd love more readers, I would also like to work on blogging with better content. More challenges. Building a network or a team. We could be "Team Do Business" guys! I'll make shirts!

12. Fill new scrapbook

I bought a new scrapbook over a year ago and have yet to scrapbook anything. I have tons of stuff collecting dust too! And a ton of pictures taking up space too. Hmm. My goal is to scrapbook and file my memories away while I can still remember them vividly. I love looking through pictures and laughing. I deserve that.

What is everyone working on in 2012? Anyone saving money for something big?

Serendipity

<media:rating>nonadult</media:rating>
