Pennsylvania has An Ignition Interlock Device Law

Ignition Interlock Device Required in PA for Certain Convictions

Anyone who receives a second or subsequent DUI conviction in the state of Pennsylvania is required by law to install an ignition interlock device in any vehicle that they own. Drivers are considered to be repeat offenders if they receive a second DUI conviction within 10 years of their first conviction.

An ignition interlock device (IID) is a small hand-held breath testing device that is installed in the vehicle and prevents the driver from starting the car if the IID measures a certain amount of alcohol in the driver’s breath. Once the vehicle is started the IID will require periodic testing while the car is in motion as well in order to ensure that the driver is operating the vehicle in a sober condition.

A new revision to the DUI law in Pennsylvania is being considered by the legislature that would make DUI offenders face the mandatory installation of an IID for a first-time offender. So far 16 states have passed laws requiring mandatory installation of an IID for first-time DUI conviction.

Cheap SR22 Insurance in TX

TX SR22 Requirements
The State of Texas prohibits the operation of a vehicle by drivers with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08% or higher. There are lower limits in place for commercial drivers of .04% and for drivers under the age of 21 of .02% BAC.

Or, for any other reason that a judge deems it necessary for you to prove to the state that you are financially responsible.

Penalties for a first drunk driving conviction are:

72 hours to 180 days in jail
Jail of from 180 days to 2 years if a child under the age of 15 is in the vehicle
Fines up to $2,000.00
Fines up to $10,000.00 if a child under the age of 15 is in the vehicle
License suspension from 90 to 365 days
DWI Surcharge – $1,000.00 per year for 3 years
DWI Surcharge – $2,000.00 per year for 3 years if BAC is .16 or above

In the State of Texas the implied consent law means that any person who receives a driver’s license automatically consents to a chemical test of their blood, breath or urine to determine BAC or the presence of drugs. If you refuse a chemical test your driver’s license will be confiscated and during your hearing the court may rule to suspend your license.

The minimum insurance coverage for private passenger vehicles per the Texas Department of Insurance is as follows:

$25,000 for bodily injury liability to one person
$50,000 for bodily injury liability to more than one person
$25,000 for property damage liability

When you have established financial responsibility through an automobile insurance policy, your insurance company will report that information to the State of Texas.

Being Under the Influence can be Deadly

Driving while intoxicated (DWI) or driving under the influence (DUI) are both known to be dangerous and illegal. However walking while impaired by alcohol can be just as dangerous, even deadly.

Alcohol impairs your judgment and physical abilities including walking. Everything you might do like driving a car, walking down the street or just walking to the bathroom in your own house is comprised when under the influence.

It is estimated that up to 25% of pedestrians who have been struck by automobiles had a level of alcohol in their system. Some even had a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) above the legal limit of .08 which is the measurement for drunk driving.

So the message is, alcohol impairs your physical abilities as well as your mental abilities, so be careful even when walking if you’ve had too much to drink.

Economic Downturn Causes Drivers to Drop Insurance

The current economic downturn is possibly responsible for car owners canceling their car insurance coverage due to other commitments in their personal budget. It is estimated that the national average for uninsured drivers is almost 14%. That means that out of every 7 cars on the road 1 is not insured. You are more likely than ever to be involved with an uninsured driver during an accident than just a few years ago. In some states the number of uninsured drivers is higher than the national average, approaching 20% or 1 out of every 5 drivers.

When owners drive their cars without insurance, the owners who do have insurance carry the financial burden if there is an accident even if they are not at fault. Most owners carry additional insurance called “Uninsured Motorist/Underinsured Motorist” coverage for this very reason.

Uninsured Motorist Coverage can be purchased to cover your bodily injury as well as property damage to your car. The coverage is relatively inexpensive, costing about 5% of the overall insurance policy.

Suggestions for Securing Your Car from Thieves

Car thieves are always on the look-out for easy targets. They look for obvious things like windows being left open, doors being left unlocked or even sun-roofs being left open. These are check-list items that you ought to do on a regular basis to keep your car from being stolen.

However there are other things you might do to prevent the loss of your car –

Anti-theft devices – buy an electronic security system, buy a steering wheel and column lock if your vehicle does not have one standard, install an ignition kill switch, install a fuel kill switch or other types of immobilization devices.
Never leave your car running, unattended or with the keys in the ignition. These are common sense items but you’d be amazed at how often they are violated.
Park your vehicle in a well-lit, high traffic area when you leave it. Don’t park in a parking lot out by yourself as that makes your car a target.
If your car is stolen, call the police as soon as possible. The earlier you get the police involved, the earlier they might be able to recover your car. They will need as much information as possible, such as the year, make, model, color, license plate number, VIN, the location where it was parked and the approximate time.

Remember, car thieves operate both day and night and they are looking for easy targets most of the time. You can do a lot to prevent the theft of your car!

Cheap SR22 Insurance in OH

OH SR22 Requirements
It is against the law in the state of Ohio for a driver to operate a vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 or higher. In Ohio a DUI is called Operating a Vehicle Intoxicated (OVI). The OVI law in Ohio includes alcohol, or drugs or both.

Penalties for a first time OVI offense in the state of Ohio are as follows:

72 hours to 6 months in jail, or a Driver Intervention Program for 3 days
6 days in jail if the BAC is .17 or above
License suspension for 90 days up to 3 years
A reinstatement fee of $450
Fines from $250 to $1000
A special form, SR-22, may be required from the BMV to be filed with the insurance policy

The SR-22 in Ohio is required for a minimum of 36 consecutive months. The judge will determine the period during sentencing based on the severity of the crime. As an example, if your driver’s license is suspended for five years due to a DUI or some other serious violation, then the judge can require you to carry the SR-22 for five years as well.

Failure to keep your car insurance policy active when you have an SR-22 is a serious problem. If your policy has a lapse in coverage due to failure to make the payment, or for any other reason, will cause the SR-22 filing period to start over from the beginning. This could mean a minimum of another three years having the SR-22 filed with your insurance policy.

An SR-22 shows the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) that you have at least the state minimum coverage for liability insurance. Most insurance companies file the SR22 with the BMV electronically.

The minimum required liability insurance coverage is as follows:

$12,500 for Bodily Injury Liability per person injured in one accident
$25,000 for Bodily Injury Liability for all persons in one accident
$ 7,500 for Property Damage Liability for destruction of property
