While the Michonne ‘character’ appeared in the Season 2 finale, saving Andrea from certain zombie death, that was obviously a stand-in — Danai Gurira hadn’t yet been officially installed. Now that she has, the network has provided the following first-look at Gurira as Michonne in sword-poised posery:

As for why relative unknown Gurira (Treme) was cast in this iconic role, Dead exec. producer Robert Kirkman explained:

“We looked at a lot of talented people that were really fantastic, but we were waiting for that one spark, that moment where everyone was completely in agreement and completely excited, and we felt like we had found the essence of this fictional character that just randomly appeared in another person, and that person was Danai Gurira. She kind of came in and really just blew us all away. She’s got incredible presence, and she’s got a theater background, and is very physical, and was just perfect for the role.”

Kirkman also reiterated his enthusiasm for the third season’s new prison set, and gave the promo folks something to think about:

“It looks absolutely amazing. They are shooting the hell out of this prison. It just looks absolutely stunning, and I think when people start seeing trailers and stuff for this season, I think people are just gonna be like, “Wait, what? This is what? I can’t believe this is a TV show!” It’s really creepy, really moody and it’s just gonna be really awesome.”

The 16-episode third season of The Walking Dead gets underway this fall on AMC.

Seriable’s Mark Jones reviews Carnivàle 1.10 — “Hot and Bothered”

The Carnies head further south in “Hot and Bothered,” a fairly packed episode which sees Brother Justin return to Mintern and Samson and Ben try to track down Scudder. Its New Mexico setting makes for a colourful change of scenery and is the set-up for plenty of drama, even if most of it only affects the private lives of the carnies.

“Hot and Bothered” isn’t a phrase just used to describe the weather, and its effect in this instalment but hints at the underlying sexual tensions that are boiling away in the carnival. The most notable hook-up is Ben and Ruthie but Libby also stumbles upon Rita-Sue and Jonesy getting busy in the shower after dark and something almost happens but doesn’t between Jonesy and Sofie.

Ben and Ruthie’s union was inevitable, not to mention necessary for the story, and while it’s a tender moment it’s a bit creepy as well, as they do the deed after she comforts him about his bad dreams in kind of a motherly way. Putting aside the dark undertones and the fact that Ben had to have a reason to fall asleep sometime, it doesn’t seem wrong or forced on the surface, though also doesn’t feel as significant as it might have been.

There are some character-deepening developments between other couples in the show as well, namely Jonesy and Rita-Sue and Jonesy and Sofie. While continuing to see Rita-Sue behind closed doors, or at least behind closed shower curtains, Jonesy has an opportunity to take his relationship with Sofie a step further but stops before things go too far, a move which indicates he really does care about her. Their encounter is the result of Sofie’s increasingly strained relationship with her increasingly deranged mother, and there are hints that more is to come on this front in the future.

Adding to the list of sexual yet soap opera-like elements is Felix’s night out where he gets into a bar fight and ends up bunking up with a Mexican woman, who he subsequently hires to dance the cooch with Rita Sue, spelling out more troubled times for his marriage.

Aside from her tender moment with the former baseball player, there are some intriguing hints that suggest a greater destiny for Sofie which ties in with the Scudder mythology. In the previous episode it was revealed that her father was the man with the tree tattoo and in this one the mysterious man becomes a more prominent figure. Not only does he appear before Ben when he drifts off to sleep but he’s also seen, at least to the audience, as part of a mural painted on the wall of the Templar Lodge.

As well as this, the member of the lodge that Ben and Samson encountered at the entrance, suddenly appears before Sofie to tell her “every prophet in her house,” which refers back to the dream at the beginning of “After the Ball is Over,” connecting her to main arc in quite a significant way. At this point there’s too little information to go on to draw any real conclusions but its joining these dots that gives the audience something to think about while other mysteries are explained in a more direct manner. This episode also plots another point on the arc of Apollonia’s descent into madness as she “breaks the rules” by sending Sofie visions of the dark side of customers’ futures in a particularly disturbing reading.

The main thread running through ‘Hot and Bothered’ where the main mythology is concerned, however, is Ben and Samson’s journey into town to see if they can find out more about Scudder’s whereabouts. There’s no hesitation when Samson asks him on the trip, which shows a level of trust that just isn’t there with Lodz. Although Samson might not be as altruistic in his actions as he’s letting on, he certainly seems to be as clueless as Ben where the significance of the boy’s visions are concerned. Samson is the more entertaining personality by far where him and Ben are concerned, but the scenes with them in the car are fun to watch and it’s good to see Samson warming to Ben with sense that the trust Ben feels for his boss is reciprocated.

It’s also true of many of Samson’s actions, especially with Sofie as well, that he can come across as a caring father figure when he’s not telling people what to do. This makes him a more sympathetic character than Lodz who doesn’t seem to have as much regard for his fellow carnies’ well being. During his conversation in the car on the way back, he offers up quite a big chunk of exposition regarding the history of the carnival and how management came to be involved in the first place. Once again there are references to the “old country” and bad things happening, “badder than you can imagine, badder than anyone can imagine,” but the little man offers no hint as what these could be. As well as these casually delivered answers, there’s a steady drip of tantalising clues we’re given when they’re inside the Templar lodge, such as Phineas Boffo watching them from a window as they leave, but no startling revelations.

One of my favourite Ben moments, however, although a small one, is when he’s back at the Carnival and trying not to sleep in a filled bath tub, only to be rescued by Gabriel, who carriers him to Ruthie’s trailer, clearly still grateful for Ben healing his arm. In a way this moment indicates one of the strengths of the episode, the little moments between characters which show who they care for and where their loyalties lie, with the biggest reveal in this respect coming right at the end.

Brother Justin’s return is the other main event, and in true creepy Justin Crowe fashion he sneaks back into his house in the dead of night, putting his hand over Iris’s mouth to stop her from screaming before waking her and kissing her on the lips. Now that both he and Iris are on the same page, it’s revealed that she knew about Justin’s powers and his destiny since they were children, making her seem like a much more dark and burdened character compared to the subservient sister she seemed before. There are some scenes with Justin and Tommy Dolan where the minister is reluctant to appear on the radio — but the really good stuff comes near the end when Justin gatecrashes a sermon given by Brother Norman. Riling the crowd up after he shows an aptitude for reading peoples’ minds, he starts to assemble his army and when he insists that Normal baptise him, the holy water cuts into his forehead making it bleed. It’s a simple effect but works really well, especially coupled with the terror in Brother Norman’s eyes.

There may be a lot going on compared to previous episodes, but overall it doesn’t hit its marks quite as well as those that preceded it. The stuff with Samson and Ben is interesting and offers some exciting clues, but there are no massive developments, or at least none that felt massive, where the story is concerned. The ending where Lodz is talking to management, while keeping us up-to-date with the man behind the curtain’s plans and suggesting that nothing good is going to happen to Scudder once they find him, lacked the impact that it might have had if the episode ended with Brother Justin’s triumphant and terrifying return to his flock. That being said, it’s an important scene topping off an episode where we’re once again given a few answers as well as plenty to think about.

American Horror Story will get even crazier in Season 2 as it heads back in time to tackle big questions.

We’ve known for a while now that Season 2 of American Horror Story will be set in an institution for the criminally insane run by Jessica Lange, who will have several new enemies to play with — but other story details have been kept behind closed doors. Until now. AHS co-creator Ryan Murphy revealed to Vulture that the new season will take place in the 1960s and will, aptly, explore the notion of sanity:

It’s set in an institution for the criminally insane that Jessica Lange’s character runs, which is a really, really, really fun thing to do because you can write all these people locked up in it. And I guess if the first season was about infidelity, the second season is about sanity. What makes someone sane or insane? Sometimes the people you think are insane are actually the most sane of all. It’s fun to write about people who society throws away.

I haven’t said this publicly, but the new season is set in the sixties and Chloë Sevigny, for example, plays a character who was put in an asylum because she was a woman who likes sex, so her husband sends her away. At the time, you were able to put people away for that. Another character is institutionalized for being a lesbian. To me, there’s nothing more scary than somebody coming to you and saying they’re going to take you away and put you in a mad house and you have no legal rights and there you shall stay till the end of your days. That is a real horror. Everybody has felt people thinking, “You’re f-cking crazy.” Even somebody saying that to you is scary.

Of course, Season 2 will have its own, mostly separate storyline, with the returning cast members playing new roles. Murphy doesn’t think viewers will struggle to find their bearings, and reveals that Evan Peters, one of Season 1′s antagonists, will play the hero in Season 2:

I think they will [be able to adjust]. I think that people will love seeing Evan Peters, who was last season’s ultimate badass bad boy and this year is the hero of the show. It’s not like the actors are playing similar parts. They’re going to look different, they’re going to sound different, they’re going to have different accents. It’s a different time period. The actors are so excited to do that and hopefully their enthusiasm will translate. I mean, I would pay to watch Jessica Lange read the phonebook. And she’s so the opposite of Constance this year. Like, if she was the wilting Blanche DuBois character, there’s not a shred of that now.

Should the show make a third season then it seems like Murphy has a plan:

I knew the first season was about a very contemporary haunted house, and I knew the second season was gonna be — if we were lucky enough to be picked up — about an insane asylum done in a very different way. I pitched it in the very beginning, and FX said, “Good. We hope the first season works ‘cause we love the second season.” I even know what the third season would be. There are very, very many different kinds of haunted houses in our culture. And there are a lot of different social topics that you can weave through that sort of prism.

Awake creator Kyle Killen says he has no plans to take the canceled NBC series anywhere else.

The cancelation of the intriguing dual-reality drama Awake, had fans hoping that the story might continue elsewhere after this week’s finale. However, speaking on Twitter, Killen said that while he’s ‘up’ for continuing the story, the show will end after one season on NBC, barring an incredible ratings spike:

“no, don’t see us taking awake anywhere else [..] I’m ‘up’ but it’s so much more difficult than people imagine. in this case, barring an INCREDIBLE rating spike the chances are 0.”

Unfortunately, that incredible ratings spike didn’t materialize for last Thursday’s penultimate installment (which tied the series low 0.7 in the ad-coveted demo). As for whether the finale will provide fans with satisfying closure, Killen said:

“Yes, the season finale is a really satisfying way to go out. our best EP + ["That's Not My Penguin"]“

It’s going to be interesting to see where and how the story ends. It will also provide an indication of just how much ongoing story potential was left in the tank. At this stage it feels like there will be a lot of closure, which can be seen as a good thing if the show has no chance of continuing.

At the same time, it will be sad to let go of Michael Britten’s realities — while there was perhaps too much procedural focus for some viewers, the show was arguably world building while cooking up more serial for later. It’s worth remembering that Person Of Interest didn’t crack the serial-procedural formula until later on in its first season run.

Official story details lay the stage for the series premiere of Showcase sci-fier Continuum — “A Stitch In Time”.

Inspector Kiera Cameron loses everything she has and finds herself on a new mission when she and eight dangerous terrorists are transported from their time in 2077 back to 2012 during the terrorist’s attempt to escape execution. She takes on a new identity and joins the VPD in order to stop the terrorists’ reign of violence. Along the way, she befriends Alec Sadler, the 17 year old who will one day grow up to create the technology her world is built upon.

Continuum is a new Canadian cop show with an overarching serialized twist, coming to Showcase, Sunday, May 27. Take a look at the series and find out what creator Simon Barry has to say about the show’s series-spanning story arc.

How far would you go to save the future? That’s the question that bonds the high-concept time-travel element of Continuum to the character story it hopes viewers will invest in.

Continuum, starring Rachel Nichols (Alias), is described as:

A one-hour police drama centered on Kiera Cameron, a regular cop from 65 years in the future who finds herself trapped in present day Vancouver. She is alone, a stranger in a strange land, and has eight of the most ruthless criminals from the future, known as Liber8, loose in the city.

Lucky for Kiera, through the use of her CMR (cellular memory recall), a futuristic liquid chip technology implanted in her brain, she connects with Alec Sadler, a seventeen-year-old tech genius. When Kiera calls and Alec answers, a very unique partnership begins.

Series creator Simon Barry offers his view on what Continuum holds for viewers:

It’s about a group of revolutionary terrorists from the future who are facing execution, so they pull a prison break. Instead of going through the wall they set off a bomb that is a wormhole and they travel back sixty-five years to 2012. A police officer who happens to be in the execution chamber with them, also comes along for the ride unintended. The story takes place from her point of view – the policewoman’s point of view as she tries to stop these terrorists from not only changing history, but also starting their revolution in our time.

As for the sort of seriability intrepid viewers can expect to find in Continuum — expect both procedural and serialized story:

I think it’ll attract people that like TV. We have elements of a typical police show that appeals to anyone who watches any police show. We have some good character relationship stories that I think would appeal to anybody. We have this displacement, fish-out-of-water situation for one of our characters that’s unique and we also have a big science fiction mythology that wraps around everything and keeps the serialized part of our series alive and kicking hopefully to season ten.

The serial-procedural experiment has yielded mixed results this season (see Alcatraz, vs Person Of Interest for example – though the latter has certainly benefited from more time to find its way), so the big question will be whether Continuum can successfully combine both formats, while establishing the world of the story. However, with the promise of fully-rounded characters and a larger serialized mythology spanning the series, Continuum looks promising and has our attention. Let’s see where this goes..

Seth Gabel will not return as a regular cast member in the fifth and final season of Fringe.

Sources confirmed to TV Line that Gabel, who portrays agent Lincoln Lee in the sci-fi serial, will not be back as a series regular.

This was always on the cards the moment the Bridge ‘linking’ the two universes was closed towards the end of the fourth season, with the bespeckled agent deciding to remain ‘over there’ to seek out new mysteries untold.

Gabel’s agent Lee was very much a divisive character, with many fans seeing him as an unnecessary and annoying distraction from the main characters, while his romantic entanglement with Olivia certainly didn’t help endear him to some.

Seemingly, the idea behind the Lincoln-focus was to help new (and perhaps veteran) viewers experience the new timeline through his burgeoning eyes — a move that perhaps wasn’t as successful as it might have been. It’s probably no coincidence that the character was left in the alt-universe.

According to the source, Gabel may return for an episode or two in the final 13-episode season — but for the most part, it’s Agent Lee, out.

At the conclusion of season four of TRUE BLOOD, Sookie summoned all her resources for a climactic encounter with Marnie, and emerged triumphant. But her showdown with Debbie may have had fatal consequences for Tara. Jason Gedrick (HBO’s short-lived Luck) has secured a multi-episode arc on Showtime’s Dexter.

In the upcoming seventh season of Dexter, Gedrick will play the manager of a Miami-area gentlemen’s club that becomes linked to a high-profile murder case.

New plot details have emerged for the second season of the psychological Showtime serial Homeland.

We already know that the second season of Homeland will pick up some 6 months after the conclusion to season 1 – following Brody’s failed attempt at the lives of Vice President Walden and his inner circle, and Carrie going into shock treatment in a desperate attempt to cure her mental woes. We also know that the start of season 2 sees Carrie in Beirut, working around the edges of the intelligence community.”

So Carrie’s arc for Season 2 is beginning to form — she’s still going to be intertwined with Brody (how much does she remember?), and she will continue to hunt terrorist Abu Nazir – whether that’s with the CIA’s blessing or without – but her credibility is pretty low.

While in Tel Aviv filming new scenes for the spy serial, executive producer Howard Gordon coughed up some additional context for Carrie’s mission, saying:

“There is a very specific reason why Carrie is called into action. And that process is really very dramatic and, hopefully, very emotional. There is a piece of intelligence in this part of the world that only Carrie can access.”

LOST showrunner Damon Lindelof doesn’t regret the ending of the serial drama, stressing that he didn’t want to do the ‘architect meets Neo’ conclusion. He also tackles the ambiguity of LOST and the challenges of creating the perfect ending for long-form mythology tales.

LOST may have ended two years ago, but it’s still very much in the seriable consciousness. Speaking to The Verge, Lindelof tackled questions regarding the polarizing ending to LOST, specifically the decision to choose (what can loosely be defined as) ‘emotion over mythology’.

Lindelof notes that he has no regrets about ending the show in a way that felt most satisfying to him, and points to the season 6 mythos-heavy episode “Across The Sea” as being one of his most disappointing episodes in the series run because it was as close to the Matrix ‘architect scene’ as LOST came.

The question of how much of LOST was improvised along the way threw up the best quotable from the interview: “This is the plan, and when the plan doesn’t work, we change the plan”.

As previously noted, the producers of Grimm will delve deeper into the show’s mythology in season 2 — however, the procedural element wont be taking a back seat anytime soon.

Here’s what Jim Kouf and David Greenwalt told EW about the overarching mythology vs procedural balance in the upcoming second season of Grimm:

Going into a second season with a 22 episode order, is it exciting knowing you have all that to play with?
Greenwalt: I think the word you’re looking for is daunting.
Kouf: Or terrifying.
Greenwalt: Daunting and terrifying.
Kouf: It’s actually weird. All these ideas we’ve done in the first season, we actually talked about when we did the pilot. It was all about, if we got the series, we’d do this and that. So we actually threw out a lot of those ideas way back before we had a series.
Greenwalt: And we had so much there were certain things that have gone into season 2 that we were going to do in season 1. We ultimately felt like it was too much. We still want the series to be imminently watch-able. We don’t want [new viewers] to feel like they have to know all this information to watch the show. That’s something we’d really love to communicate. It’s still a show where a crime is solved every week, and you can watch it. But if you know all these details, you’re getting a richer meal.

What’s that balance going to look like in season 2?
Greenwalt: We’re going to do everything. We’re going to have more mythology and continue standalone episodes so that a new viewer can come and enjoy the new show.
Kouf: And the mythology you know based on season, it will get deeper.

Sounds like they’re really putting the serial on a gradual boil. We’ll see how that works out.

The second season of Grimm goes into production May 30 for an August start.

Hemlock Grove executive producer Eli Roth believes that online streaming could soon allow storytellers to tweak aspects of show’s that are not working, “instantaneously”.

Roth’s comments are particularly interesting as gothic horror adaptation Hemlock Grove — directed and exec. produced by Roth — is braving relatively uncharted territory as one of Netflix’s first original series:

“Here’s what I realized is so great about online streaming content. Let’s say in Episode 3, there was one story segment that we were certain would work, but the fans went crazy. Why the hell couldn’t we just pull it, re-edit it, and put it back up? If there’s an editorial change we want to make, and we have data to show that people are turning off at this point, we just recut it.

Roth continued:

“There’s no reason you couldn’t do it. Think about that. There’s no physical DVD to reproduce; there’s—nothing! It’s right there instantaneously. You want to tweak something later, you just do it. Who cares?”

While viewer subjectivity will always play a part, it’s an interesting premise. I definitely see the pros and cons of doing this, but it’s certainly an intriguing idea. How many bad plot points have you wished could be changed or buried within the palimpsest of your favorite serial?

I think this notion would work better for some shows than others, but it’s an interesting  concept that illustrates the opportunities that online streaming will undoubtedly create for long-form stories with invested audiences, as well as the potential impact this may have on the way these stories are digested.

Hemlock Grove is slated for 2013 on Netlfix. All 13 episodes will be released at the same time.

Syfy has brought an end to Sanctuary.

The sci-fi drama will not be returning to Syfy for a fifth season, it was confirmed today.

Mark Stern, president, Syfy original content, said:

“We’re honored to have been part of this incredible series. In addition to garnering unmatched devotion by fans worldwide, Sanctuary was a bona fide trailblazer, setting new standards with its highly innovative production techniques – including pioneering green screen and RED camera technology – and Emmy-nominated visual effects”

He continued:

“It’s been an amazing ride and we look forward to our next project with Amanda Tapping, Martin Wood and Damian Kindler.”

Tapping responded to fans on Twitter, saying:

“To all the fans of @SanctuarySeries we love and adore you. Thank you for the love and support. Now to the long dark tea time of my soul. “

Sanctary closed its fourth season in December.

The executive producers of Homeland reflect on the spy serial’s breakout season and tease the upcoming second chapter, including how current world events will have a significant bearing on the show’s Season 2 story.

Speaking at the Peabody Awards, where Homeland was honored, EPs Alex Gansa and Howard Gordon looked back on the enthralling serial’s first season, provided a fixed stamp on where the story picks up in Season 2, and teased more details on the upcoming chapter. read on for insights:

On the show’s moral ambiguity and whether they get involved in the politics of it all or try to center the story mostly on the characters:

Gansa: We’re fairly rigorous about staying agnostic politically, just asking and posing the questions rather than answering them. That said, if you look at it, there is a sense that this country may be engaged in a perpetual war right now. The rise of the surveillance state in the United States. These are all questions that we want to pose and ask: what is our safety worth?

On how much real foreign affairs impact what happens on the show:

Gordon: Quite a bit, actually. And in the second season you’ll see even more so. We’re really looking at where the world is, what’s happening in the Middle East right now, and that’s going to be a major departure point from the first season.

On filming in Israel:

Gordon: Yeah, I just got back last night. It was remarkable. The show is based on an Israeli format, which was only incidental to the fact that we actually have Israeli partners that were production partners on this, and we doubled it as Beirut. [..] large portions of next year [will be set there].

On Season 2

Gordon: Season two is going to start about five or six months after season one ended. Carrie will not be in the intelligence service, and the world will be at a boiling point.

Gordon also teased that there will be some new antagonists entering the fray. A previous report noted that Nicholas Brody will get a new chief of staff and cross paths with a “beautiful Middle Eastern woman who comes bearing an ultimatum,” so we’ll see how that ties in.

Over the weekend, we brought you the confirmed Season 5 premiere date for Breaking Bad. Today, it’s the turn of another AMC serial — Hell On Wheels.

AMC has confirmed that the western’s 10-episode second season will launch Sunday, August 12 at 9pm.

Hell on Wheels is set in post-Civil War America and centers on former Confederate soldier Cullen Bohannan (Anson Mount), whose quest for vengeance has led him westward to work on the construction of the first Transcontinental Railroad.

It will be of little comfort to fans of Alcatraz and Terra Nova to know that their favorite seriables are amongst the top-rated canceled shows.

EW’s list of this season’s nine highest-rated canceled shows includes Terra Nova (2nd) and Alcatraz (3rd), per their 18-49 demographic rating. Ultimately, the following numbers were not enough to warrant a renewal in the eyes of FOX:

1. “Rob” (CBS: 12 million viewers, 3.7 adults 18-49 rating): A 3.7? If NBC had a freshman comedy with a 3.7 average, it would run the show five nights a week this fall (“Community” was renewed with almost half this rating). Bully for CBS that their table scraps have these kind of numbers. The issue here was Rob Schneider’s comedy was shedding too much of its massive “Big Bang Theory” lead-in, and was trending the wrong direction. CBS suspects the time slot can do better.

2. “Terra Nova” (Fox: 10.1 million, 3.6): Some in the industry feel Fox made a mistake not picking up this ambitious drama for a second season. I agree. “Terra Nova” managed the rare feat of delivering a sizable family audience to a broadcast drama, found its legs creatively in its final hours and there was nothing else like it on TV. Cost was a factor, but so was the network’s belief that midseason addition “Touch” would be the network’s next big hit (it wasn’t).

3. “Alcatraz” (Fox: 9.6 million, 3.4): The ratings on “Alcatraz” keep sinking while the show, unlike other J.J. Abrams-produced dramas, wasn’t hugely engaging for viewers. A second season would have likely seen a ratings drop into serious red-line territory.

Fans of Terra Nova and Alcatraz can feel aggrieved based on their show’s numbers versus the those of seriables that have been renewed (Fringe and Touch), though it’s worth bearing in mind that other factors came into play. For example, while Terra Nova made the network money, it didn’t pull up many trees creatively (though this may have improved in season 2), was particularly expensive to create, required a long production lead time, and the network didn’t believe in it — to name a few factors.

As for Alcatraz, once ratings failed to uptick, it was always likely to be a straight jump between it and one final season of Fringe — as we know, the latter got the high-five. A decision that has earned the network and studio (WBTV) numerous plaudits, though it’s a shame room couldn’t be made for both.

Just goes to show that along with ratings, it can also boil down to lesser spoken about variables, such as timing and whether a network fancies a show.

Seriable’s Mark Jones reviews Joss Whedon: The Complete Companion

It’s true that you should never judge a book by its cover, but in the case of Joss Whedon: The Complete Companion, judging its subject by the book’s cover is no bad thing. Depicted in the style of the oft imitated Obama campaign poster, Joss Whedon is presented to us as the president of geeks, and if you’re not convinced of this fact before reading it, you will be afterwards. Examining each aspect of his varied career through academic essays, articles and interviews, there are few perspectives that aren’t covered, offering something for everybody. The target audience is as varied as the texts it contains, and while I can’t profess to having seen, or read, all of Whedon works, fan of his as I am, it did allow me to approach the book from several angles. As the life-long fan (Firefly/Serenity, Dr Horrible’s Sing-along Blog), the casual viewer (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Dollhouse) and the complete novice (Angel, his comic books).

Published by Titan Books, the companion features a chapter for each TV series and Dr. Horrible’s Sing-along Blog, while the comic books and movies (with the exception of Serenity which is coupled with Firefly) are gathered together in one chapter. It’s structured chronologically so things kick of with Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which not surprisingly has more pages dedicated to it than any other series and ends with his latest project The Avengers. Each section of the book begins with a “Joss Whedon 101” which serves as a primer for anyone who hasn’t seen the work in question, followed by a selection of critical essays and interviews, and at the end there’s an appendices which includes episode lists for each TV series and information on each of the authors who contributed to the book.

Out of the Buffy pages there were a couple of essays that really stood out to me, not only for their analysis of the series but because of how they applied to serialized TV in general. These were “I’d Very Still: Anthropology of a Lapsed Fan” and “How Buffy Changed Televsion”. The first is really a personal perspective of what it’s like to be a deeply involved fan of a series, recounting author Lily Rothman’s attempts to get back in touch with the group of people she discussed Buffy with online back in the days when she was obsessed with Seth Green’s Oz. Even for non-Buffy fans there are several points that ring true and certainly helped me to gain a new perspective on my own fandom (though my big obsession was LOST).

In the piece which is certainly the most personal of all the texts collected (and all the better for it), tells of her quest which is triggered by her realisation that Season Nine of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the comic book version, was being made. Along the way she makes contact with one of her fellow Oz-fans from her days before her interest waned in the online group after the character left the show, and talks about the depth of her fandom, videotaped libraries (something which will ring true for many people even if it’s an obsessive fan trait which is now obsolete) and how a fan’s OTP (one true pairing) never really goes away.

“… There was something there, instantly visible to those with the potential for fandom, something that made that first night in 1998 imprint itself on my memory the way big life moments have the tendency to do. I remember so well my classroom and the face of my friend when we discussed it the next day. I remember the couch my parents used to have. I remember the light in the room.”

It may be centred around her love of Buffy, and certainly reminds us that that universe is very much still alive and well, but will help anyone who’s ever been a dedicated fan of any show to understand their obsession a little better.

Similarly “How Buffy Changed Television” is another essay that is focused on Buffy but is revealing in a wider context as well. The first point it deals with is probably one of Whedon’s greatest achievements: how Buffy sparked the rise of female heroes on television. One thing that becomes apparent throughout the book is how much respect the great man has for women, it’s said more than once that he’s a self-confessed feminist, and how Buffy was a turning point for the female hero in TV. Before Buffy the Vampire Slayer there were few strong female leads in TV shows, at least in the way Buffy was, and the author Robert Moore highlights the fact that arguably the strongest female character before Buffy was Diana Rigg’s Emma Peel from The Avengers (the iconic British 60′s TV show, no relation to the comic books or movies).

At the end of the first section, he compares those who followed her to those who preceded her, which really brings home the influence Buffy had. Following on from that, Moore looks at how Whedon was the first creator to kill off main characters (a trait which has certainly become a staple of Serialised TV and is now almost expected), and the influence Buffy had on the narrative structure of TV and its place in serialized history. Connecting the dots between soap operas, Hill Street Blues, Twin Peaks, The X-Files and finally to Buffy, it’s essential reading for anyone who wants to gain a better understanding of the history of serialized television.

Not only was it a “Homecoming” for Nikita, but the arrival of a new dawn. The Season 2 finale witnessed the death of Percy (and Rone), and saw Nikki assume the reigns of Division with Ryan managing the day-to-day. Here’s Silverstein’s take on the finale and the next chapter.

On why Percy had to die:

It was really for the sake of Percy. In stripping his character down at the beginning of the season in that great cell, it gave this really terrific, natural arc for him to bubble back up and then go rogue — which I wish we could have done even longer. But then we needed him to take back over Division, and once that happens what you don’t want to do is just return to status quo…. I always wanted Nikita to take over Division at the end of the season, but where are you going to go? Throw Percy back in the cell? Or does he go on the run again? Whatever it is, it’s an “again.” There’s also the idea that the more he fails to take down Nikita, the less of a threat he becomes. And the more she fails to really take him down, the less effective of a hero she is. Also, as people know, we’re the show where stuff happens. [Laughs] So, all of that fed into the death of Percy.

On the execution of Percy’s death and the symbolism with him ending back up in his glass cell:

We always wanted a fight between Percy and Nikita up on top of Division under all those lights… The idea was that Percy was going to get out. He already made a deal, and all he needed to do was survive Nikita… And when he finally gets her up there, he realizes that the only other x-factor in his life is Nikita; she’s been able to take him out as much as he has felt superior to her. In that moment, he feels that he can just get rid of her now… We also talked a lot about his line, “I brought you into this world; I can take you out,” because Percy’s always been a metaphorical abusive father to her.

On why Ryan is the right man to manage Division:

Nikita is taking over Division, but she can’t really run it because it would be boring. We need her to go out on missions and be in the field. She can’t be the Percy of Division; she can’t strategize and sit behind a desk. We wanted someone telling her what to do, and then doing her own thing anyway — and that [someone is] Ryan. Ryan is the ideal person to head it up, and whether or not he becomes corrupted is a really interesting question… and we’ll see. I don’t know. It’s a really interesting thing, though I certainly wouldn’t want to suggest that he’s been secretly bad the whole time.

On where Season 3 will pick-up:

I don’t know that yet. I’m looking forward to figuring that out because there are so many fun ways to go.

It’s very different and I think that’s exciting. For me, as a writer, it’s so exciting because now I get to figure this out, as opposed to just taking a big stamp that has “Nikita” on the bottom of it and stamping ‘em out. [Laughs] It a saga that just continues to grow.

The first season of NBC’s Grimm has concluded but the story continues in Season 2 with more development on the Grimm War.

Series lead David Giuntoli teases the Grimm Season 2 arc direction:

“I think inevitably Nick is going to have to summon some rag-tag type of army — Monroe, maybe a Grimm here or there. I would be really interested in meeting another Grimm. [Next season] know we’re going to be finding out more about the wars and the bigger forces at work. I think this season we really dealt with Nick’s individual journey, specific cases of these creatures. Going forward, we’re going to see a more macro-world order, and figure out Capt. Renard (Sasha Roiz) and what the hell he is. I think we’ll be discovering that.”

The Falling Skies digital comic –”The Battle of Fitchburg” — fills in the gaps between the end of the first season and beginning of the second which picks up 3 months later.

Falling Skies Season 2 – Watch First 3 Minutes!

Recovered yet from the Person Of Interest season finale? It’s certainly a potential game-changer that digs into the mouth-watering mythology of the Machine, and according to Michael Emerson it will determine the direction of Season 2.

First a quick rewind: The finale saw the mysterious hacker Root reveal herself to Finch before whisking him away to tickle him with feathers until giving her access to the Machine (that last past didn’t happen). With Finch missing, Reese, who is used to whispering to himself, did the amazing and talked to the Machine via a surveillance camera, demanding its help to get Finch back. A pay phone rings, Reese answers, episode cuts on the WTF. Is it true, has the Machine acquired self awareness!?

The Machine detects the “continuity error” and calculates its options

Michael Emerson is certainly getting aboard that train, saying:

“We’re so used to thinking of the machine in one way – as the ever-present source of information in the background. It’s sort of omniscient but definitely under the control of its builders and operators. I don’t think anyone has ever considered that the machine was capable of independent activity. I think that’s a notion that comes up before we’re done.”

Just 16 episodes remain of AMC’s hit serial Breaking Bad, 16 episodes that will determine the final destination of the volatile Walter White. Now fans of the series can mark their calendars with the Season 5 premiere date and time.

The fifth season of Breaking Bad will premiere Sunday July 15 at 10/9c, that’s according to a flyer included in the Hell On Wheels DVD. This is in-line with earlier confirmation that the penultimate season of the series will debut in July.

The last 16 episodes will be split across two seasons that promise to send chief protagonist-turned-antagonist Walter White on his final destination “down that dark path that he’s very willfully put himself on.”
