aware of, and if it's not of use to them, then it could possibly save a
friend some of the pain of a difficult relationship with a teenager. Details here.

Karen is also involved in an upcoming Gaming Addiction workshop for
teachers, therapists and social workers on September 20. Flyer here.

Anyone interested in these projects or Karen's practice, please contact her directly:

Karen Rogers
805.277.7523

Tomorrow's post I'll introduce
you to a local personal trainer and an exciting offer. In a town like SLO, we have two
choices: compete or collaborate. It's been my honor and a fun adventure to collaborate with this individual and learn more along the way.

This month's issue (April 2008) had a couple of articles I wanted to share with you:

Sleepytime
First, a report that we actually are more emotional when we don't get enough sleep. According to the journal Current Biology, we're over 60% more reactive. I think we all knew it happens, but I just love how they finally put a number on it! They recommend aiming for 8 hours of sleep each night.

Let me do the math for you: assuming you get up 1/2 hour before boot camp, these are your ideal bedtimes (I know, I know...). For 5:30am boot campers, think about turning in at about 9:00pm and for 6:30am boot campers, aim for lights out at 10:00pm.

Spousal Support
This study's from University of Connecticut where they found that the spouses of weight-loss program participants lost an average of 4.9 pounds even though they weren't told to cut back. Now that's a good reason for the whole family to be on board when you sign-up for boot camp!

This would be a great tie-in to a family trip to Disneyland! The 5k (3.1 miles) is run throughout the Disneyland Park and California Adventure.

If any of you are interested in training for it, let me know and we'll
put you in touch with other boot campers who are training for it. The Half Marathon frequently sells-out so if you're going to do the 5k, better to register sooner rather than later.

At boot camp today I mentioned the New York Times article on push-ups (thanks for the tip, Susan). As I've mentioned before, push-ups are an excellent measure of strength, not just for the arms or chest, but for most of the body. As the article says:

The push-up is the ultimate barometer of fitness. It tests the whole
body, engaging muscle groups in the arms, chest, abdomen, hips and
legs. It requires the body to be taut like a plank with toes and palms
on the floor. The act of lifting and lowering one’s entire weight is
taxing even for the very fit.

In addition to showing just how strong you are, there are additional benefits to practicing push-ups, namely as we age. Not only are we able to break a fall safely and minimize injury to the wrist, but if we fall or find ourselves on the ground, upper body strength can help pull us up.

These are the national standards cited in the article:
40 year-old woman = 16 push-ups
40 year-old man = 27
60 year-old woman = 6
60 year-old man = 17.

And if you watch the video, check-out the plyometric push-ups (with a clap) at the end...
