Permainan coko sudah berkembang di DKI Jakarta sejak zaman penjajahan Belanda dan Jepang. Permainan yang secara harafiah diartikan sebagai “perebutan” ini dahulu sering diselenggarakan oleh orang Belanda untuk memeriahkan pesta-pesta yang mereka adakan. Pesertanya adalah kaum pribumi yang menjadi buruh pekerja di perkebunan-perkebunan milik orang-orang Belanda tersebut. Hadiahnya berupa makanan (keju, gula, susu, roti) dan pakaian yang digantungkan di puncak batang pinang yang telah dilumuri minyak. (id.wikipedia.org)

Setelah Bangsa Indonesia merdeka permainan ceko berganti namanya menjadi lomba panjat pinang. Penyelenggaraannya pun dilakukan bertepatan pada hari kemerdekaan tanggal 17 Agustus setiap tahunnya. Sedangkan tujuannya, selain untuk memeriahkan hari kemerdekaan, juga sebagai sarana hiburan pelepas rutinitas keseharian.

Pemain

Permainan panjat batang pinang dapat dikategorikan sebagai permainan remaja dan dewasa yang umumnya dilakukan oleh kaum laki-laki berusia 15--32 tahun dalam bentuk kelompok dengan anggota antara 6--8 orang. Selain pemain, lomba panjat pinang juga menggunakan wasit untuk mengawasi jalannya perlombaan dan menetapkan pemenang.

Tempat dan Peralatan Permainan

Perlombaan panjat batang pinang tidak membutuhkan tempat atau arena yang luas. Ia dapat dimainkan di mana saja, asalkan di atas tanah sepanjang 6--8 meter dan lebar sekitar 5--6 meter. Jadi, dapat di tanah lapang atau pekarangan rumah. Sedangkan, peralatan yang digunakan diantaranya adalah: (1) batang pohon pinang setinggi 8 hingga 10 meter yang telah dikelupas kulitnya; (2) daun kelapa yang dibelah dua dan dibentuk lingkaran untuk menggantungkan hadiah-hadiah; (3) sabun cuci batangan atau minyak sapi/kerbau atau minyak pelumas bekas kendaraan bermotor untuk mengolesi permukaan batang pohon pinang agar licin; dan (4) hadiah-hadiah yang akan diperebutkan, seperti uang tunai, sandal jepit, air mineral, pakaian, makanan ringan, sepetu, sepeda dan lain sebagainya, bergantung dari dana yang dimiliki oleh panitia lomba.

Aturan permainan

Aturan dalam permainan coko tergolong mudah, yaitu sebuah regu harus dapat mencapai puncak batang pinang untuk mengambil hadiah dan bendera merah putih. Apabila berhasil, maka regu tersebut berhak untuk mengambil seluruh hadiah yang digantungkan dan dinyatakan sebagai pemenangnya.

Jalannya Permainan

Permainan panjat pinang diawali dengan menentukan orang-orang yang akan menempati posisi paling bawah yang pundaknya nanti akan dinaiki oleh rekan-rekannya yang lain. Para pemain yang menjadi “pondasi” ini biasanya adalah orang-orang yang dianggap mempunyai tubuh kuat yang dapat menyangga kawan-kawannya.

Apabila telah terjadi kesepakatan, maka dua orang “pondasi” akan berjongkok di depan batang pinang, sedangkan pemain ketiga akan berdiri di atas pundak mereka sambil memegang batang pinang. Setelah itu disusul oleh pemain terakhir yang akan memanjat hingga ke puncak dan mengambil seluruh hadiah yang disediakan, termasuk mengambil bendera merah putih sebagai lambang kemenangan.

Setelah posisi terbentuk, pemain “pondasi” akan berdiri secara perlahan agar pemain yang paling atas dapat dengan mudah mencapai puncak. Namun karena batang pinang sebelumnya telah diolesi oli atau minyak sapi atau bahkan sabun batangan, maka pemain umumnya sulit untuk mencapai puncak. Mereka harus berusaha sekuat tenaga (dengan cara bermacam-macam) agar tidak mudah terpeleset ketika memanjat. Ada yang menggunakan abu gosok agar permukaan batang pinang tidak licin, ada yang menggunakan tali, dan ada pula yang memanfaatkan kaos yang mereka pakai untuk dijadikan tali pengikat.

Apabila dalam usaha mencapai puncak tersebut pemain terpeleset dan jatuh maka mereka harus memulai dari awal lagi. Begitu seterusnya hingga pelumas luntur dan pemain dapat mencapai puncak serta merebut hadiah-hadiah yang disediakan. Dan sebagai penutupnya, pemain harus mencabut bendera merah putih yang ditancapkan di puncak batang pinang.

Nilai Budaya

Nilai yang terkandung dalam permainan yang disebut sebagai coko ini adalah: kerja keras, kerja sama, dan sportivitas. Nilai kerja keras tercermin dari semangat para pemain untuk dapat mencapai puncak batang pinang dan mengambil hadiahnya. Nilai kerja sama tercermin dari kekompakan para pemain ketika sedang bermain. Dan, nilai sportivitas tercermin tidak hanya dari sikap para pemain yang tidak berbuat curang saat berlangsungnya permainan, tetapi juga mau menerima kekalahan dengan lapang dada. (Gufron)
