Call for articles on Community Lay Health Promoters/Community Health Workers

The interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed journal Family & Community Health will produce an issue on lay health promoters/community health workers (CHW) also known as lay health workers, village health workers, promotoras, etc. Articles are due by August 2, 2011 to Issue Co-Editors Elizabeth Reifsnider, Elnora (Nonie) P. Mendias, and Yolanda R. Davila, at the University of Texas Medical Branch School of Nursing in Galveston, Texas. Please submit manuscripts for consideration electronically to nmendias@utmb.edu and yrdavila@utmb.edu . Articles are being solicited on topics as follows:

Building infrastructure that supports lay health promoters/CHWs
- Examples of training programs for lay health workers/CHW

Family & Community Health (FCH) focuses on healthcare practitioners regardless of area of practice. The journal’s overall goal is to provide a forum to discuss a holistic approach to family and community healthcare and primary healthcare, including health promotion and disease prevention. Each issue of FCH focuses on a specific topic that can be used by faculty, practitioners, and students in a range of healthcare disciplines.

Journal for Civic Commitment Call for Articles

The Journal for Civic Commitment is web-based publication of the Community College National Center for Community Engagement, offering research and theories, strategies, and tips and techniques to readers. It is dedicated to disseminating research-based and practical information to faculty, coordinators, administrators and state directors, and is published twice annually.

Submission criteria:

Articles discussing civic engagement, service learning, service learning projects, and community-based research will be reviewed from academic faculty, community volunteers, community partners, and students.
When a student, community member, or community partner is the primary author, an academic faculty member is required to stand as a second author.
A student, community member, or community partner may write as a second author with an academic faculty member writing as first author.
Criteria pertaining to evaluation for academic excellence will be applied to all articles submitted for publication.
Artistic and literary submissions related to civic engagement and service learning will be considered for publication

Call for Proposals: Southwestern PA Regional Network for the Growth of Service-Learning (SPRING) Annual Symposium

Deadline for Proposal Submission is January 5, 2010.

Proposals are now being accepted for the 2011 SPRING Service-Learning Symposium, which will be held on March 26, 2011 at the Community College of Allegheny County - South Campus. This year's theme is "The impact of Community Engagement: from Outputs to Outcomes." We encourage submissions that address this issue in the areas of student, community, or institutional outcomes of service-learning. Please view the Call for Proposals (attached) for more details. Please complete the Online Proposal Submission form to submit a session or poster proposal.

Event Details
Join colleagues for SPRING’s 4th annual symposium. The annual symposium is held so that those interested in service-learning at the college and university level can come together to share their experiences, learn from one another, and discover potential areas for collaboration. Conference participants will include faculty, administrators, and community service providers who wish to discuss service-learning and the ways it can positively impact our region.

About SPRING

The SPRING service-learning network promotes service-learning among institutions of higher education in the Southwestern Pennsylvania region. It is a regional network of institutions, comprised of colleges, universities, and community organizations.

Service-learning is an educational method, in which students perform meaningful service to meet community-identified needs while reflecting on their actions in a way that allows them to better understand course concepts, the role their discipline plays in society, and their civic identity.

The 2011 International Institute on Partnerships theme is "From Reciprocity to Collective Transformation: Achieving the Potential of Community-Campus Partnerships." Proposals that address at least one of the following topic areas are desired:

Michigan Journal Call for Abstracts

Are you interested in submitting an article to the Michigan Journal of Community Service Learning (MJCSL)? We now seek articles for volume 18 (fall 2011, spring 2012). The first step in the submission process is to send an abstract or precis by December 20th to Jeff Howard (jphoward@umich.edu).

The MJCSL is a national, peer-reviewed publication with a circulation of about 1000 (with subscribers all over the world), and includes articles on research, theory, pedagogy, and other issues pertinent to curriculum-based service-learning in higher education, campus-community partnerships, and scholarship of engagement for a faculty and administrator audience.

There are no length guidelines for abstracts. Please submit a description that adequately conveys the focus/plan for the article, along with your e-mail address. The IMPACT Conference is historically the largest annual conference in the nation focused on engaging college students in service, advocacy and social action. This event continues and builds on the legacy of the COOL (Campus Outreach Opportunity League) National Conference and the Idealist Campus Conference, spanning an incredible 26-year history.

NCVS is the largest gathering in the country of individuals solving community challenges through volunteering and service. Seeking submissions for an edited collection on Civic Education

Publication Date: 2012

This anthology will examine civic education from a broad, interdisciplinary perspective. We welcome submissions that explore the civic education process, especially in regard to theory, policy, and practice. Further, we encourage writing that 1) represents how educators can foster students’ social activism and work toward social justice; 2) addresses models which redefine civic education instruction, relationships which create partnerships between schools and communities, perspectives of educators who change social beliefs and value systems to build citizenship; 3) addresses relationships between educators and parents who introduce civic responsibility to students; and 4) examines representations of civic education from historical, sociological, philosophical, political, economic, ethical, cultural, and media perspectives. This incorporation of a variety of disciplines and methodologies will address how civic education plays a vital role in creating citizens who are committed to creating a morally and socially responsible society and focus on how educators can effectively encourage the development of informed citizens.

The aim of this volume is to foster work on civic education that integrates the disciplines of pedagogy, history, and cultural analysis as well as represent the significance of the relationship between civic education, community, and the world. We hope to include a range of academic writing and some narrative essays.

Topics can include (but are not limited to):

Pedagogical methods to create engaged students and connect to the community and world
Partnerships between college and community
Techniques to encourage faculty and staff development to engage students in the community
Service projects in courses and volunteer projects organized by students
Internships and research projects developing from the curriculum
International service and research projects
Measuring and testing the effectiveness in engaging students and educating citizens
Tools for institutions to promote civic education
Role of technology to nurture civic education of students

The Call for Proposals for the 14th Annual Continuums of Service Conference, April 27-29, 2011 is now open!

The 14th Annual Continuums of Service Conference is dedicated to highlighting higher education's ground-breaking response to these tumultuous times. In spite of their own economic struggles, colleges and universities are involved in addressing major issues confronting our world today - from health disparities, poverty, and illiteracy, to immigrant rights, global warming, and economic development.

The 14th Annual Continuums of Service Conference will showcase higher education's best and most promising practices for:

Developing creative solutions to environmental challenges
Teaching for global competency
Building sustainable service-learning programs in partnership with communities
Securing resources to meet basic human needs, including food, housing, and health and safety services
Improving college access and success while closing the achievement gap
Convening problem-solving summits focused on the most crucial and complex issues of the day, including immigration, race, and social justice

The Continuums of Service Conference has a long-standing history of invigorating participants to explore issues from diverse perspectives. Journal of Public Scholarship in Higher Education: Call for Papers

The Journal of Public Scholarship in Higher Education journal provides a forum for scholars to share examples of academic service-learning projects that demonstrate a high level of engagement and reciprocity with the community at the same time as they demonstrate scholarly inquiry. This cross-disciplinary journal welcomes diverse manuscripts, from empirically-based examinations to critical reflection pieces, theoretical investigations, commentaries, case studies, and pedagogical and research designs. Regardless of methodology, submissions should describe the outcomes of the project on both academic (institution, faculty, student and/or discipline) and community stakeholders. All submissions should also address implications for promoting public scholarship as a rigorous form of scholarly work.

Manuscripts submitted to the Journal of Public Scholarship in Higher Education should be no more than 5,000 words, not including abstract, references, or appendices. Manuscripts should conform to the standards set forth in the current (6th) edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA).

The 22nd Annual National Service-Learning Conference®: April 6-9, 2011, Atlanta, Georgia

The National Youth Leadership Council invites you to submit proposals for workshops and the Service-Learning Showcase at the 22nd Annual National Service-Learning Conference®. The Time is NOW to submit proposals that pursue high-quality service-learning practice, engage the disengaged, bridge the gap between community and school, strengthen the “I” in service-learning through professional development, and cement service-learning in main stream education.

About Workshop Proposals
All sessions are 90 minutes in length and will be held on either Thursday, April 7 or Friday, April 8, 2011. Workshops generally average 20-30 attendees. All presenters are expected to register for the conference and will be offered the early-bird rate until the full conference rate applies.

The showcase should effectively describe the impact the program has on its community and how the initiative is unique and replicable for conference attendees.

CU Expo 2011: Bringing Global Perspectives to Local Action

The conference themes will broadly organize presentations and events into a number of important content areas. Inspired by the United Nations Millennium Development Goals, these themes are expressed both in the local and global context. We encourage those presenting and attending to think about how these themes play out in your projects and local realities, and how they are related to broader regional, national or international issues:

Conference Streams:
Within the context of those broad themes, we invite proposals to consider the following three streams around which the conference will be organized.

Community Voice and Relevance
Community needs and concerns drive the CU partnership agenda, with research activities beginning with a topic of relevance to the community, carried out in a participatory fashion, in community settings. Presentations and workshops in this stream will explore how collaborations and partnerships can be designed and carried out to include community voices and perspectives.
Partnership and Collaboration
CU partnerships bring diverse people together to form collaborations around common goals. Participatory processes and reciprocal relationships are valued. In some collaborations community members and academics equitably share control of the research and partnership agenda. Developing and sustaining these partnerships is often challenging. Presentations and workshops in this stream will explore these issues and reveal strategies and techniques for collaboration.
Action and Change
CU partnerships envision a better future, through ongoing learning, reflection and action. The process and results of the partnerships are useful to community members and university partners in promoting social equity and making positive social and institutional change. This stream will reveal the impacts and social transformations of partnership, and will include specific techniques in developing policy and implementation strategies as well as broader knowledge mobilization and translation efforts.

Practice will begin on Saturday, October 30th and conclude early Sunday afternoon, October 31st . Building on the conference theme Crossing Boundaries through Research, ICSLTE seeks presentations that explore and portray diverse cultural perspectives and theoretical frameworks and raise next questions that may result in comparative research and practice and inform international discussion. 2010 IARSLCE Early Career Network Panel Call for Proposals

The Early Career Network (ECN) will sponsor a panel session at the October 2010 IARSLCE Conference in Indianapolis. Based on requests from ECN members, this year's panel will focus on writing competitive grant applications (e.g., NSF, Learn & Serve).

We are interested in having around four panelists speak of their grant writing successes, failures, lessons learned, tips, tricks, partnerships, funding sources, research connected to the grant, etc. This would provide an opportunity for grantees to highlight their individual programs too. The focus, however, should be on supporting early career researchers who seek information about how to secure their own competitive grants. Each panelist would have approximately 10-15 minutes to present. The session will conclude with a Q&A period.

If you would be willing to sit on this panel, please send the following information to Trae Stewart at pbstewar@mail.ucf.edu by May 7, 2010. A balanced panel will be composed based on submitted proposals. Panelists will be contacted by June 1, 2010.

Repair the World Index Request for Proposals

Repair the World is a new national nonprofit organization that was founded in 2009 to inspire and build a movement that makes service a defining element of American Jewish life, learning, and leadership.

Repair the World is commissioning a piece of research (currently referred to as the "Repair the World Index") in 2010 to better understand the service-related attitudes and behaviors of American Jews aged approximately 18-30. The idea is to get information that will be helpful for Jewish institutions -- including Jewish service learning program providers -- about the service-related interests and behaviors of this age cohort, and to establish a baseline for measuring change over time.

We will engage a two-step process for this RFP -- first inviting a 2-3 page "concept paper" outlining the general approach you might take to the project; and then inviting a more formal proposal from a select group of respondents. Our goal is to have a vendor selected for this project no later than May 31, 2010, with a plan to commence the research by June 30, 2010. We seek to conclude the project no later than the end of 2010.

We ask that by April 9th you indicate if you have interest in this project and intend to submit a 2-3 page concept paper.

Should you choose to submit a concept paper we ask that you include your responses to the following questions:
1. How will you define, set parameters for, etc. the terms "service," "social justice," and "social change?"
2. How will you approach the sampling frame for this study?
3. How will you incorporate prior/other measures toward ensuring some comparability?
4. How will you define and what constructs will you use for inquiry into "Jewish identity" and "Jewish values?"

The concept paper is due on or before April 30, 2010.

2010 Search Institute Conference Request for Proposals

The new Search Institute conference, now called the Big Tent Conference, will take place on November 18-20, 2010, in Houston. The vision is to bring not only the committed Healthy Communities • Healthy Youth and Developmental Assets Champions to the gathering, but also to expand both the audience and approaches. This first annual gathering of national leaders, practitioners, and movements brings together all those who are invested in promoting the health and success of our nation’s children and youth.

The learning session RFP is now available. All sessions will be 90 minutes long. We encourage intergenerational leadership in learning sessions, and we prefer a combination of youth and adult presenters.

The 2010 International Association for Research on Service-learning and Community Engagement (IARSLCE) Annual Conference will take place from October 28-31, 2010 in Indianapolis, Indiana.

The featured theme is International Perspectives: Crossing Boundaries through Research. Service-learning is valued as an active learning strategy across the globe; however, little is known about the ways that service-learning is similar or different in varied contexts. Understanding service-learning and community engagement from diverse cultural perspectives will add insight necessary for comparative research and to improve practice.

Proposals will be accepted beginning Monday, January 15, 2010. Due to some technical difficulties, there is an extension for proposal submissions. To be considered, all proposals must be received via electronic submission by 11:59 p.m. (Eastern Standard Time) Monday, March 29, 2010.
