Starting March 1, all Google products will follow one new Privacy Policy.</p>
<p><strong>What has changed?</strong></p>
<p>Under the new privacy policy, users can no longer &#8220;opt out&#8221; of their online behavior being tracked across properties. <a href="http://marketingland.com/google-terms-of-service-privacy-policy-4293">Danny Sullivan of Search Engine Land summarizes this new policy nicely</a>: &#8220;Rather than people signing up for individual products, Gmail, YouTube and so on, they&#8217;re now signing-up for <strong>Google</strong>&#8230; It&#8217;s similar to how you sign-up for Facebook, rather than individual products within Facebook.&#8221;</p>
<p>Google says that the policy not only consolidates their various policies into one, but will also enhance their services, potentially providing more personalized search results and smart notifications using calendar and contact information. Critics claim that Google is violating users&#8217; privacy, since there is no option to opt out of the share settings outside of deleting your Google Account.</p>
<p><strong>So how does this affect your practice?</strong></p>
<p>Beyond your individual user behavior, this privacy change shouldn’t have a significant effect on your practice’s marketing efforts right now. If Google does begin using all this new data to enhance its search and advertising, this will likely bring some changes to the best practices in search engine optimization. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Did you know that over the past year, America&#8217;s top brands have made improvements in how they use online branded communities to reach their customers? However, some opportunities for engagement remain untapped, according to a new report by ComBlu.</p>
<p>More brands are taking a strategic approach to social media engagement.  Among the 251 online branded communities studied, managed by 92  brands:</p>

<p>41% of brands now have a <strong>cohesive strategy</strong> for social  engagement in which multiple activities roll into a single online experience,  compared with 33% in 2010, and 20% in 2009.</p>
<ul></ul>
<p>The <strong>social experimentation</strong> stage is most prevalent: 50% of  brands are experimenting with social communities, lacking a long-term engagement  approach, using instead a series of one-off experimental marketing campaigns.  That level is up from 45% in 2010.</p>
<p><strong>Community</strong> <strong>ghost towns</strong> (unpopulated  communities) now make up 5% of communities, down from 15% in 2010.</p>

<p><strong>Community overload</strong> (multiple communities fighting for  attention from the same audience) afflicts 4% of online communities, down from  5% in 2009.</p>
<p>Among the communities studied, most (75%) are focused on advocacy, whereas 33%  focus on customer support and 20% focus their efforts on customer feedback. Other data included 43% of the communities offered <strong>rewards and  recognition programs</strong>, up from 39% in 2010.</p>
<p><em>About the data:</em> The audit of 251 online branded  communities among 92 US companies was conducted by ComBlu during the summer of  2011.</p>

<p>The study reported that  14.8% of firms generate 40% or more of their new business leads online  and such firms lead the pack in business growth and profitability.</p>
<p>In addition, among companies that generate 40-59% of leads online,<strong> the median two-year growth  rate was 63.9%, compared with 15% among those that generate no leads online.</strong></p>
<p>The study found that leads generated online directly correlate with profitability. There wasn&#8217;t any definitive answer as to why, but one explanation given was that online marketing simply costs less than traditional marketing, and online marketing produces better results. In contrast, traditional marketing techniques often require sustained campaign expenses, thereby narrowing profitability.</p>
