Last chance coming up to catch two Sesame Street party designs that have been around for a while. Sadness! They've had these two designs since I first started this blog way, way, way back in the day. But Sunny Days and Sesame Beginnings are on the way out.

There are a few new designs to replace them, and I actually do love them a lot. But if you are partial to either of these, you need to act quickly or you'll miss them altogether!

Checklist for a great Sesame Street birthday theme

It's easy to see cool pictures of other people's Sesame Street birthday parties and think - "I could never do that!" But, yes, yes you can.

Taking a party theme past the obvious is as simple as starting with three choices to build the theme around - colors, characters and props.

Pick a character - Go with your favorite (or your child's!) or pair up ones that tend to go together. Like all the girls or Elmo and Zoe or Big Bird and Snuffy. A pairing that goes beyond the obvious shows you put some effort into this party planning.
Pick a color scheme - Obvious choices would be the colors of the characters you've selected or the primary colors so many Sesame Street items come in. But how about green and white for the Sesame Street sign? Or black and white so Elmo really stands out when you use him. Or puce if that's your child's favorite color. (Goodness, I hope not!) Divide the colors into a primary one and accents to help with decorating.
Pick a location/prop/element - This part is the one that starts to panic people, but it's really simple. Brainstorm on the character you've chosen and you'll see just how easy it is to pinpoint these things. (The hard part is often narrowing it down!) Every character has something we immediately think of with them - Elmo/Dorothy, Ernie/rubber duck, Cookie Monster/cookies, Rosita/guitar. Those elements bring in a secondary theme to play with or just create a guide for you in choosing decorations and elements. So do a rubber duck cake, have music time with guitars, play bean bag toss with stuffed cookies. Getting the picture?

Spend just a little time thinking through these three things and your Sesame Street party with have some extra flair that makes it truly special.

Unconventional ideas for Sesame Street party decorations

On the one hand, it's easy to just get a birthday pack that comes with all the decorations you could ever need for a Sesame Street theme. Can't go wrong when everything is printed with Elmo or Big Bird's face, can you?

But there are objects you might never have considered and probably already own that you could use for decoration as well at your party. And bonus! Probably use them for your child after the party is long over.

Posters - There are only about a billion Sesame Street posters out there. OK, I'm seriously exaggerating. But there are quite a few. Some have all the characters like the Sesame Street Faces poster pictured here. (Love that retro styling!) Or you can get really modern and hip images of just one character. Nice thing about using posters is you can later put them in your child's room as decoration. Posters of individual characters are great for designating different stations for the party as well.

Plush toys - If your child is into Sesame Street, there is probably no way you don't have a stuffed Elmo or two lying around. (Now, if it looked like the one my friend's little girl lugged around all the time, it might not be suitable for display.) Plush toys of all sizes are great as decorations on tables meant for food, gifts or favor boxes.

Books - Think about how the library uses books in displays. They're meant to grab your attention for books you might not have noticed otherwise, but a similar idea could be used with Sesame Street books you have.

Coloring pages - Decorate in two different ways with these. You could have your child color the pictures in advance, then hang them up as art and decoration for the party. (Or color them yourself if you want them to be just right.) Or put them up blank, then let party goers pick one to take down and color for themselves.

Games - This is a great place to get creative. Card games like the Sesame Street UNO with king-sized cards in the picture are a good one to start with. Use them to create a display on the wall or hang them from the ceiling. Flash cards, Old Maid - any will work. This is also a great way to get some use out of a game or puzzle that is missing a piece or two.

Activity books for a Sesame Street birthday party

Ooo! Ooooo! Check out the newest things from Sesame Street for your birthday party. Well, I suppose they aren't just for birthdays. But since you can buy them individually or in packs of eight, they actually make great ideas for favors or party activities.

These are cute write on/wipe off books - three different styles covering colors, letters and numbers. Each book has 16 pages of coloring and tracing games related to its topic and they're about a half-page size, perfect for little hands. You can use any water based marker (they don't come with their own) and let the fun begin.

There's another set of activity books you can check out for use at your party, both around coloring and tracing. One comes with Elmo on the cover, while the other one features Zoe on the cover. Each book includes 32 fun-filled pages of coloring, tracing and writing games. These are about twice the size of the others, roughly an 8x10 picture.

I also ran across this Sesame Street Sticker Activity Book, which includes 15 pages of activities and 100 mini stickers.

Saying thanks in a personalized way

Sesame Street teaches kids about all kinds of great stuff, including manners. So it stands to reason that saying thank you is important for a Sesame Street birthday party. I love these little stickers as a way to say thank you as guests leave. Put a sticker on their shirts as they go out the door to let them know you're glad they came. Or use them to decorate a favor box or bag.

Thank you notes are just as important and these personalized options are pretty cute. No, they aren't licensed Sesame Street designs, so they are just reminiscent of Elmo, Big Bird and Cookie Monster, but they work quite nicely.

Primary colors at a Sesame Street birthday party

Sesame Street covers the colors of the rainbow by the time you get to the end of the list of monsters and other characters. Fortunately, this makes it easy to pair up birthday party supplies in other colors and styles to decorate and supply your Sesame Street birthday party. It doesn't always have to have Elmo's face on it to work. Primary colors make the most sense, especially since much of the Sesame Street stuff these days has Elmo, Big Bird and Cookie Monster on them.

Just a few of the items I found were this first birthday decorating set, which includes a 14.5" high 1st Birthday sign, two 10" honeycomb centerpieces, two 10" honeycomb hanging decorations, 12' garland and four 12" cutouts. That's a lot of stuff for not much cost.

Add to that two different personalized birthday banners that have bright primary colors, but aren't Sesame Street specific. The first just has presents and balloons and cake, which makes it perfect for hanging just about every year. The other one I found is specifically for the year. I've got the one for turning two in the picture, but they have all the years up to 10. Both come in multiple sizes.

This is truly a cute idea! Not sure who first came up with it but there are more and more high chair decorating kits out there for first birthday parties.

And as part of the new Sesame Street 1st line is this cute high chair decorating kit featuring Cookie Monster, Elmo, Big Bird and Abby Cadabby on the floor mat (great for catching stray cake and ice cream!) and on the pennants that decorate the high chair tray. The mat isn't first birthday specific, but the pennants do include the number one.

Love this one, but there are a few others that would work into a Sesame Street birthday theme with their primary colors. At least ones for boys. All the ones for girls are pink, which works with an Abby Cadabby theme.

Two new Sesame Street birthday party themes for first birthday

Excitement!!!! There are two new Sesame Street birthday party themes that have been released to help you celebrate your child's first birthday. Whoop! Been waiting for these for a long time.

You'll notice in the pictures that they share a lot of elements across the themes - the napkins, cups, hats and other items are actually the same designs. A lot depends on whether you want to emphasize Elmo or go generally Sesame Street. The Elmo's 1st pattern features Elmo on the plates and you can get an Elmo balloon to go with the party pack. The Sesame Street 1st pattern includes Big Bird and Abby Cadabby along with Elmo on the plates and balloons.

Either way, both of these are just nice designs and I'm happy to see them!

Best Sesame Street birthday party ever?

Me thinks Andrew wins for coolest Sesame Street birthday party. Check out the great job his mom did for his third birthday!

You'll notice she created all the signs and invitations custom, none of which use any Sesame Street images. Instead, she took things with bright colors and simple designs and made them work by using character names. As well as the party being brought to you by the Letter A and the Number 3. (Taken from her child's name and age.)

She brought in Sesame Street elements with the cute beanie sized Sesame Street plush characters. Some for the food, some for the games.

And the games! She came up with these just by brainstorming with a friend, tying elements related to a character with activities suitable for toddlers. My favorite was the Oscar Trash Toss shown in the picture here. How's that for cute!

I share a lot on this blot of specifically Sesame Street birthday items you can get, but this is a great example that a little creativity can go a lot farther!

After the party: Sesame Street thank you notes

Sesame Street spends a lot of time teaching kids good manners. And there are none better than taking time to say "thank you" after a birthday party. Now, you might be the one writing the thank you note, but that doesn't mean it can't come from your child. Which probably makes getting Sesame Street specific notecards a good idea to keep going with your theme.

Now you can get Elmo thank you notes and you can get Sesame Street 1st birthday thank you cards. But my favorites were the Sesame Street thank you cards pictured here. Unlike the others, they were birthday specific and come with blue envelopes (not boring white) and stickers. And in a pack of 20!

Lighting up some Sesame Street birthday candles

In all my talking about cakes and cupcakes and toppers, I've completely neglected to talk about candles. Silly me.

And when it comes to Sesame Street birthday stuff, the candles are oh so cute.

My favorite is the Big Bird one for a first birthday.

There are several for Elmo, several for Abby Cadabby and even a few to go with the different themes. Pick ones to go on the cake to match your theme or just random ones for fun.

Sesame Street birthday figurines make a great keepsake

File this under - why don't they make more? - but I love these Gund Sesame Street birthday figurines! What a great keepsake for your child and you could even use it on the cake! I just don't get why there are only versions for the 3rd and 4th birthdays out there. You'd think they'd make them for 0-5. Huh. Or a few that weren't year specific.

Big Bird is helping celebrate your child's third birthday. There's a 3 on one of the balloons and I love how it looks like he's got his own stuffed Sesame Street plush monster in his arms. I'm sure your child is dragging around their own.

For the next year, Ernie is on hand to get the party going. He's carrying birthday cards, including one with a big 4 on it. He also has a cute little stuffed Sesame Street monster hanging with him.

I found these guys over at My Toy Box. Big Bird is 3.75" tall, while Ernie is 3.25". They're in the $6 range, which was the best price I found when I started poking around.

Sesame Street pinatas too cute to hit

I'm torn on the pinata thing, I have to admit. Not in general. I love a good pinata smacking, not to mention all the lovely candy spilling out.

But, what about a pinata in the shape of a beloved Sesame Street character? Will a child be traumatized by being asked to beat in Elmo's head? (A child. Some of us adults would do it gladly.)

On the other hand, does a toddler care what he's hitting as long as candy comes out?

With that caution in mind, there are some cute Sesame Street pinatas to be had out there. You can get all of these at the Sesame Street Store, but I did find better prices on the Abby Cadabby and Elmo versions at Shindingz.

Pick from one of those or go with Cookie Monster. They're all about a foot and a half tall, so should hold plenty of candy for a passel of kids. There's also a round pinata featuring a host of characters.

Just too cute, isn't it? I love this Personalized Sesame Street Birthday Frame as a table decoration at a Sesame Street birthday party, maybe with the gifts. And definitely, it's a great idea for keeping a birthday memory after the party.

You've got a cute cake for your child's Sesame Street birthday party, whether homemade or store bought. How to show it off? This cake stand would be a great addition to the food table, making the cake front and center.

I love Sesame Street cupcakes. People really get into them and come up with the cutest designs. (My favorites always involve Cookie Monster with a cookie in his mouth.)

But some of us just aren't meant to do cake decorating. (I think I'm just too much of a perfectionist and making Sesame Street cupcakes would take me to my limit!) And a young child might think the cake is cute but really be more interested in how much frosting they get. Or - heaven forbid - cry at the idea of eating Elmo.

So nice plain cupcakes are great. Perfect, in fact. Top them with red, yellow, blue and/or green icing and they're just as Sesame Street as you need. Make them extra special by displaying them on one of these cupcake stands. Add a little extra Sesame Street easily with character rings, icing decorations or baking liners.

Just ran across this guy this week. Love the little Sesame Street sign on the top layer with the birthday girl's name and age. Too cute! Designed by SusanReis and you can click the image to be taken to more pictures. Working around the cake, she has the heads of Grover (my fave!), Big Bird, Bert and Ernie. I picked this picture because you could also see the little side cake with a fuzzy Elmo face. Love it!

Table tent centerpieces put the spotlight on your child

Centerpieces can really make your birthday table, whether with the food, the favors or the gifts. There are some cute Sesame Street-specific ones, but if you want to avoid have characters on everything, check out these primary colored photo table tents. I almost went right past them because I'm always looking for Sesame Street birthday stuff, but these would work perfectly! (Except for an Abby-Cadabby themed party. You might want to use these pink and purple tents instead.)

So what are you supposed to with a ton of toddlers for two hours worth of party? We've talked before about using music as the basis for different games to play with the kids. But you might also want some quiet(er) time activities. And coloring might be just the thing for a little down-time. It give each child something to take home with them in addition to their favor box (if you're handing those out) and should kill at least five minutes. (You hope!)

Coloring books are one of the hardest things for me to shop for at the store. The selection is limited, the racks are a mess and sometimes the book you want is already tattered. Boo. So I went looking for options online and discovered not justs Sesame Street coloring books, but birthday specific ones! Cool!

We looked at the Sesame Street CriCut cartridges recently, which can be used for decorations as well as scrapbooking. But they aren't your only Sesame Street scrapbook options. Tons of stickers to brighten up your pages and even an Elmo border punch. I've shown a few of my favorites here, especially the third set of Sesame Street characters stickers, which has a group shot, and the character headshots in the last set.
