Featured Fine Art Print for March: Hellestø 3

I was not able to post a featured print for January or February, therefore, I will do it a little differently this month. The Featured Fine Art Print for March is titled Hellestø 3 (from the Earth Energy-gallery) and is one of three square-format photographs that I made back in June 2010. Sometimes, a significant number of successful photographs can (actually) be made within a short period of time, or on one trip. In that regard, the trip I made to Jæren (western coast of Norway) in June 2010 yielded so many photographs (both single and themed) in only 3 days that it must have been my most productive trip ever. I also clearly remember how I seemed to surf on a creative wave that lasted throughout the entire trip and whenever I found something interesting to photograph, everything just fell into place in my mind, and viewfinder (click!).

I suspect that sleep deprivation and the rhythmic, and sometimes deafening, sound of breaking waves in the nights induced some sort of trance, but nevertheless, I felt very much awake to my surroundings and how those surroundings was transformed in sync with the evolution of the sun and light. I don`t see my subjects in 1x1 (square) very often, but in this small series I wanted to distill everything down to the absolute minimum in order to make something meaningful out of simple subjects that easily could be classified as invisible, to most casual beach wanderers anyway.

All three of these photographs were made in the soft light of sunset afterglow, with exposure times ranging from 3-6 sec., where the subtle glow of the sleeping sun really was the key to the subjects` silent yet strong appearance. So, this month`s Feature became more of a short presentation of a theme I`ve been sitting on rather than a feature of one, single photograph. I hope you liked the twist, and that you enjoyed looking at a slightly different style than I usually share here on my blog or website.

Photography Is Not Just Photography

Photography is not just photography. It is an inner journey. It springs from my heart which
is filled with longing, sadness, hopelessness and darkness. It is also filled with joy, peace, compassion and light. We are not one thing and one thing only. We change, everything changes. Every single second, myriads of changes occurs everywhere; in our thoughts, in our emotions, in our bodies, in all living beings, throughout the natural world, throughout the whole universe and beyond. When I look back, life has been all about change, choices, experiences, learning and understanding. Photography is not just photography; it is a part of my life and a part of who I am. Photography is not just about creating beautiful photographs; it is about learning things about myself and about the world that could not be discovered or expressed through meaningful words or deliberate thoughts, no matter how intelligent or logic those thoughts and words may seem. Photography is not about cameras or techniques; when being able to master the camera and the techniques, they become just one of many tools in the process of making a photograph. For me, it all comes down to a meditative state of mind. A state of mind that observes the mind itself and its everchanging conditions. Or, as Michael Kenna eloquently puts it; it`s a real voyage of discovery.

In our day and age, information and knowledge is gathered quickly yet patience and understanding dissolves even faster. With everyone racing towards better, faster, bigger and bolder, our global state of mind changes, nature changes because of that, life changes and our personalities changes. Change can be good or it can be bad and at the same time, it doesn`t have to be either. Change cannot be stopped and any attempt at trying to stop change would not prove to be a wise choice. Even if we cannot halt change, we are still free to make our own choices. To make a change for the better. If we choose the easiest solution; to race with or against everyone else, our destinies becomes a random pattern of success and failure. We become like a autumn leaf, blowing where the wind takes us, without direction and without meaning. It takes courage, strength and compassion to make a choice and to live by that choice. Life has never been easy and never will be. Then again, life is not just life. It is an inner journey. It should spring from your heart which is filled with longing, sadness, hopelessness and darkness. It should also be filled with joy, peace, compassion and light. You are not one thing and one thing only. Remember, my dear friends, that it is you who make your life, as you go. You make the change.

Dørålen in Rondane Nasjonalpark: Awaken in Monochrome

My first release in 2013 is Awaken Monochrome. For those of you who have followed my photography for a while might recognize this as a color photograph. I don`t often bother to convert photographs from color to monochrome. The most appealing monochromes are those that are intentionally photographed for monochrome, already at the scene. It has a lot to do with the subject, colors in the scene and light.

One photograph can be very appealing in color, and when converted to monochrome, something seem to be lost. The same goes for the other way around, from monochrome to color. In this case, I really liked how it turned out. Personally, I prefer simplicity and a certain kind of leading light and/or contrasts in monochrome photographs. Light, form and contrasts becomes the focus of attention instead of colors. While I was editing work (from my Rondane II-portfolio) for a client, I stumbled over the Awaken RAW-file and immediately thought: "Why haven`t I tried this in monochrome?". Well, the rest is history and just a few days ago, I released the resulting photograph on the website. See it larger by clicking the image above.

10 Favorite Photographs from 2012

Well, first of all I hope that you all had a pleasant Christmas and a wonderful New Year`s Eve! Unfortunately, I haven`t had the time to update my blog the last 2 weeks, but for those of you who have connected with me on Google+ and Facebook, I did manage to publish a couple of updates during the holidays. 2012 was one of my toughest years, photographically speaking, and this is something I was reminded of when editing a selection of my own 10 favorite photographs from the past year, which I usually share with you around this time each year. Also, I wanted to contribute to Jim Goldstein`s still growing collection of a many great photographer`s own personal favorites, so here goes.

By the way, this first one was one of my first photographs that I made after purchasing the fantastic Canon TS-E 24mm f/3.5 L II tilt-shift lens and is a stitch of 3 exposures (one while shifting down, one without shift and one while shifting up) all while the camera body was secured in one (horisontal) position. This technique produced a (very) high resolution photograph that also might be my nr. 1 choice of all the ten.

As you might have noticed, 4 of my favorite photographs from 2012 were in fact photographed prior to 2012. But, because they were first released in 2012 I allow myself to think of them as new photographs. This happens quite often; make a photograph today, release it (much) later. As a photographer that takes care in the creative aspects of every photograph, things like composition, light, expression or even personal emotions change over time and it is not always that the most obvious is what wins me over in the end. The more I photograph, the less I actually release on my website. That said, I hope you understand why some of these photographs were in fact photographed earlier than 2012, but first released recently. I hope that you enjoyed them. And, I wish you all peace, happiness and good health in 2012!

The Featured Fine Art Print for December is titled Sastrugi VI Monochrome (from the Monochrome Landscapes-gallery) and was photographed on a ski trip on Norefjell mountain (Norway) back in March 2011, not long after several storms that really re-created the snowy mountain landscapes into fascinating pieces of nature`s art.

I would like to thank all of you who chose my Fine Art Prints as a part of your Christmas gifts! The holidays are just around the corner and there will be no more prints shipped before 3rd of January 2013. I would also like to thank you who kindly asked me if I would like to contribute photographic work to various books, calendars and corporate projects on Rondane Nasjonalpark (oldest national park in Norway) as a part of the 50th Anniversary of Rondane Nasjonalpark, which I did, of course! I feel honored, and, very happy to give something back to the place that has given me a many unforgettable memories and experiences through the years. More about these things later on.

What next? Well, a number of new photographs have already been added to the website (and more will come), and soon I`ll start on the Favorite Photographs from 2012-blog post which will probably be published at the end of December/beginning of January! Also, there will soon be more iPhone/Android wallpapers available in the Download-section! But, before that, I will write a few words about 2012, in general. Until then, may there be peace and enlightenment in every breath, in every single heartbeat.

Rondvasshøgdi Revealed Monochrome

While I was diving into my archives the other day (see the From My Archives 10: Trees By The Sea-post), I also found this monochrome version of Rondvasshøgdi Revealed which I made after releasing the color version back in 2010. I am quite selective when I work in monochrome and prefer simplicity and contrasty light conditions; not necessarily beautiful light, but light that enhance the subject or express emotions in a way that a color photograph can not. I feel that this photograph brings my mind somewhere else, away from the mere visual impression of looking, and off to a world that is so far away yet so very close. When I released the color version two years ago, I assumed that this monochrome version would never see the light of day again. Well, upon discovering it in my archives, I found that it expressed something that the color version never quite fully did, or could. In monochrome, the blues of the cold shadows and warmth of the golden light is in fact lost. Still, I think it does reveal some other part of my initial impressions, and the way I saw things, that windy winter morning in Rondane where the soft shapes and heavenly light came together to create an unforgettable moment that I felt truly blessed to be a part of. Let alone to photograph.

Featured Fine Art Print for November: Autumn Lily

The Featured Fine Art Print for November is titled Autumn Lily (from the Worlds Within Worlds-gallery) and was photographed at Myrdammen lake back in September. During a morning stroll around this lake I noticed that there was slight motion in the water while working this composition. Without the fallen leaves I would probably not see that subtle motion because the lilies themselves were not moved by it. I used a tele-lens, with a polarizer to lengthen the exposure (1.6 sec.), and experimented with different amounts of polarizing effect until I could see both the roots of the lilies underwater and the reflections on the water surface in a pleasing combination. By looking at the LCD-display I knew that this photograph deserved a closer look upon returning home. Autumn Lily has just been released on my website and was also chosen as the Featured Fine Art Print for November.

From My Archives 10: Trees By The Sea

For those of you who followed my old Wordpress-blog might remember my occasional From My Archives-posts with photographs that I found in my archives. After almost each trip, I end up with a number of photographs that I for different reasons have a hard time to decide are good or not. I recently mentioned on Google+ and Facebook that I have purchased a brand new, and powerful, computer and upgraded my monitor (Asus 24" LCD Wide PA246Q Proart with P-IPS wide color gamut-panel that covers 98% of Adobe RGB color space). Well, that`s not what this post is about, but after having set up and color managed (calibrated) the system, I started to load some of the archived files that I haven`t looked at for a long time into Lightroom 4.2, and as usual, I found a number of photographs that I`ve almost forgotten all about. Amongst all these files I stumbled upon these two photographs that instantly awoke certain feelings in me and which I had no doubt should be added to my website as Fine Art Prints.
Web images just can`t do real Fine Art Prints justice, but by looking at larger versions, the overall impression, the fine details and a sense of presence seems much more alive and gives an experience that is closer to the real print than smaller versions. Therefore, I`ve implemented a new feature on the blog; click on the photographs to see them large!

These two photographs seems to have grown on me over time after I made them on a cold winter day by the coast (Larkollen) in December 2010. Just by looking at them, I remember how the sunlight pushed through the fog creating a soft yet intense light that was further intensified by the white, snowy landscape. The trees looked dead, covered in fragile spikes of frost and the only sound I heard was my own breath and footsteps in the snow. I love conditions like that. Winter can often induce a feeling of purity, simplicity and solitude that I seldom experience in any other season. Earlier, during autumn, I found these trees or groups of trees and was certain that their character and relationships would be emphasized by the bright and featureless snow. I drove to the coast on a overcast winter morning and was delighted to see a snowy forest where the frosted, hibernating trees created a canvas of countless opportunities. To create something, out of nothing, one must use ones own imagination to see, rather than just looking at what is physically in front of our eyes. That day, I mostly photographed in Monochrome-mode, but did also make a few in color when I noticed how the otherwise subtle color of some trees really stood out because of the surrounding white snow.

Photographing trees and branches presents a number compositional challenges. Accepting that as a fact, I relied on balance, structure and the relationship between light and shadows more than anything. Did it work? Well, I still don`t know, but these two photographs sure do appeal to me, so, I wanted to share them with you.

Even though this post is re-cycled from my old blog, this video is just as inspiring to me now as it was the first time I saw it. My own photography have little in common with the masterful work of Michael Kenna, but the thoughts he expresses in this interview deeply resonates within me.

I believe that whether or not you are a fan of Michael Kenna`s work, are a professional, amateur, or any other type of photographer or even just generally interested in photography, you will find this interview meaningful and interesting. Either way, you cannot have watched this video without getting some thoughts about what photography means to you personally. And, sometimes, we just need someone to help us find our way back to our true joy of seeing and photographing. If so, this might be exactly what you didn`t know you were looking for.

Featured Fine Art Print for October: September Mountains

September Mountains was photographed on one of my latest trips to Dørålen in NE Rondane National Park and was actually created while scouting for locations to photograph later that day. In other words, not a part of the plan. Isn`t life a little like that? Little of it has ever been a part of our actual plans, right? Still, I consider September Mountains to be one of my favorite birthday gifts to myself, especially due to how surprisingly well it turned out. The day before, I had hiked up to Midtronden mountain (2060 m./6759 ft.) where I walked on fresh snow for the first time this year, I saw moose twice and did also successfully photograph a mountain birch at mid-day (!) under a blazing sun (which I might post in one of my next posts). While at sunset I did not produce a single photograph, at least, not one that I really liked. The morning after, I awoke quite early hoping for morning fog, but I guess the night had not been as cold as anticipated. The sunrise just didn`t quite make for the light I was after for the subject I wanted to photograph, so, I spent the cloudy morning photographing intimate landscapes and details while hiking to areas I haven`t explored before. Surprisingly, that was when I noticed the paralell angles of two birches and the elegant curve of the lake, which eventually resulted in the Featured Fine Art Print for October.

On this trip, I met other photographers on two occasions both times ended up in interesting and friendly conversations. I somehow did not catch the names of the first two that I met at a well known (especially for photographers) lake, but if any of you should happen to read this post, I would like to say that I had a great time talking to you. By the way, too bad you didn`t stay longer...later that evening, the wind died out and the lake reflected the snow-capped mountain peaks perfectly (see end of this post). On the last day, I met Arne Lohn who I`ve had the pleasure of having met earlier, Einar Kongshaug and Ove Bergersen. Thanks a lot guys, for the great time and for sharing the stories about the wolverine and the Austrian hiker who had visited Dørålen for 20 years in a row! Now, that I call a dedicated hiker and traveller! He certainly knows how to enjoy the finer things in life.
It is very rare for me to meet, or speak to, other people on my hiking trips in Rondane. I love that. But, from time to time, I do meet people and it has never failed to result in interesting conversations and sometimes long-distance friendship. In the mountains, we seem to greet everyone with respect, friendliness and eagerness to share our experiences and good laughs regardless of status, wealth or origin. In the mountains, we escape the mundane.

Last month was quite busy for me and I was not able to post the Featured Fine Art Print for September, so, I hope this one will make up for that. Editing recent work is going very slow these days, but more new work, like Dørålen Colors (above), is eventually added to my website and made available as Fine Art Prints.

Featured Fine Art Print for August: Rondane - Clear As A Mountain Stream

I have a growing backlog of photographs from this summer, but am in no mood for sitting behind the computer to edit, especially when the weather is perfect for walking in the forests or hiking in the mountains. Well, tonight is one of those rare occasions this month where I do feel inspired to look at, and work on, some of the photographs that I`ve made the last two months. Each year, I notice that I use longer and longer time to start working on the photographs after a trip. Sometimes, it`s just because I am tired and sometimes I don`t get an emotional response if I do give editing a go. Then, when I least expect it, I get inspired, start looking, editing and working and always find at least one good photograph that I have completely forgotten about. When I start working on the photographs that was made two months ago, I see them for what they actually are (now) instead of what I wanted them, or planned them, to be at the time of shooting.

Looking back, for many years, the first thing I would do after coming home from a trip was to start looking and working on my files, no matter how tired I was. I just could not wait to see if the photographs met my expectations or if I had made "the perfect photograph". I`ve always been patient out in the field and have never felt frustrated when I had to wait two, or three, days to get the desired light or weather conditions for a specific photograph. There was always something else to do, to see or to photograph and many of my favorites were made while I was waiting for something else to happen! But, that patience evaporated quickly as morning dew as soon as I got home. Well, things have certainly changed. I try not to force change, I try to find the right time for the change to come, and if the results don`t meet my expectations, so be it. I`ve found that to grow as a photographer, focus should not lie on always producing great photography, but to look beyond, listen to your thoughts and emotions and steadily steer your boat the direction that your mind tells you. Success is fleeting, give your life meaning instead.

While having a short tea break from editing some work from a trip to the west coast (Flø) in early July, I decided to update the Featured Fine Art Print for August (a little late, I know) and will probably also upload new work to this website in the next few days.

The Featured Fine Art Print for August, Rondane - Clear As A Mountain Stream, is one of several personal ways of celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Rondane National Park on-line. Hope you enjoy the large view on the home page.

Featured Fine Art Print for July: Stygghøin Mt. Rising

As promised in my previous post, Jæren and Feistein Lighthouse, where I released two new photographs, here is another new Fine Art Print addition. This is from a recent trip to Dørålen, NE Rondane Nat. Park and is titled Stygghøin Mt. Rising. I`ve photographed the exact same subject before, but back then, the light was both technically challenging and did not convey the mood and mystique that I had in mind when making this composition of the old birch tree and Stygghøin mountain. This time, it rained heavily on arrival and the wind made me miss my dry, warm bed. Little did I know of the conditions that awaited the next morning.

Due to the time of release, I made it the Featured Fine Art Print for July so that you can enjoy it larger on the website home page!

Jæren and Feistein Lighthouse

The winter was quite a challenge for me, photographically speaking. On most mountain trips, I was often greeted by hail, strong winds or winter storms and when the winter finally announced its departure, I must have felt like what writers call writers block. Uninspired, empty and like as a dark cloud was following me around. Other than that, winter was great.

In landscape photography, weather and light is more or less crucial and even if you have worked out how to compose or photograph a subject or landscape, light is the final touch. Each subject, each landscape and each photograph has its own character. Remember, fantastic light is not limited to an exploding sky. I always study my impressions and emotions closely and then try to be creative to resolve the empty spaces between the lines, and to reveal the mysteries. One of my own personal mysteries, happen to appear in the summer months at the western coast of Norway, especially on the long sand beaches in Jæren District where the powerful sound of the Gulf Stream waves reminds me of a distant memories, or even subdued primal instincts. These days, the sun at Jæren sets at 11 in the evening, sun rises at little past 4 in the morning and between those hours it never gets (really) dark. Those blue hours often has a certain light quality that I find wonderful to work with and which often makes me hear some faint echo...
of something long forgotten.

The above photograph is one of the 5 photographs that I made that morning that I was very pleased with. It`s simple, all about lines and texture and less about light and color, though the even light and soft, muted colors really was what made the photographs speak to me in the end. Every year, I always make the time to evaluate what I have done the past year and then to decide which path that will please me the most to pursue. It seems that the longer I photograph, the more simplified my photographs become, just like when I first started with photography many years ago.

4 sec. (1 sec. in the photograph below) exposure (Canon 5D Mark II, TS-E 24mm f/3.5 L II-lens with shift for even perspective control and tilt for near-to-far sharpness, Lee grad. neutral density filter) made 4 in the morning, just before sunrise. When photographing patterns in the sand, the challenge lies in finding interesting patterns as they seldom have a clear appearance to the naked eye and the photographs often look featureless on the LCD. Careful work with the curves-tool though, helps me accentuate the patterns in the photographs when processing. Also, at the time of shooting this kind of photographs, often a brighter (than usual) grad. neutral density filter is used to compensate for increased contrast (curves) later on so that the sky doesn`t get overly dark in the process.

I`ve been on the move for most of the last month with little time to process all the resulting photographs. Rondane Nasjonalpark 50th Anniversary

Rondane Nasjonalpark, the oldest national park in Norway, celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2012. I hope that Rondane will get a lot of attention, the sort of attention that might remind people of enjoying, exploring and protecting our natural environment. In this day and age, environmental issues can seem like a huge, almost impossible task, not just on a national or international scale, but also on a personal level. We all know how it is; hear enough about suffering or a particular crisis and we come to a point where it is easier to look the other way. Think long enough about something sad and we get depressed, tired and frustrated. I believe that instead of suppressing our emotions, and our thoughts in the process, we come a long way if we allow ourselves to think things through without letting our emotions get in the way. If we respond negative to some thoughts, we automatically try to avoid those thoughts. So, instead of completely giving up on the seemingly impossible environmental issues that is often presented in the media, let`s be open to a other ways of contributing. Who knows, environment might not be exactly what you have been taught to think after all. The natural world, protecting environment; what does it mean, on a personal level?

I like being outdoors, especially in the mountains. Spend a couple of days, or a whole week, hiking in the mountains and you will understand. I like hiking. Not for the sake of reaching a destination, but for the sake of...walking. Realization. The journey.

When I walk, ski or climb, the pressure, time schedules and burning desires of everyday life gradually fades away. And slowly, the mind opens up to what is around me and for each step the senses are getting clearer and your thoughts are replaced by observation and understanding. Even time, seems to seize to exist. There is only now. It can change your life. When walking a long distance, the path will become your path, the light will be your light and the whispering wind will clear your mind. With an open and observant mind, you will see how things are perfectly connected. Everything from the tiny ants to the soaring eagles, from the flowing water to the solid rocks and between happiness and sorrow, good and bad, me and you. Those who seek, will eventually have a clear understanding of how everything and everyone, is a part of ourselves. Nature is not outside our body and minds. Nature is you, nature is me, in all of us. We are one. The soil you walk on is the same as your body, everything you sense (eyes, ears, nose, tongue, feel) is the same as your mind. This can`t be explained, it has to be experienced. This is where theory and knowledge ends, and understanding and wisdom begins. This is what environment is all about. Not to engage in environmental issues in anger, frustration or fear of the future fueled by the media or hard facts alone, but to understand, connect and love. Only by being calm, peaceful and focused inside can you do something good for others and our environment. Only when we understand how we are all connected with everything around us, are we able to live in harmony with the rest of the world and contribute to a better future. When you meet living creatures with understanding, compassion and joy, they will be affected by it. Because, we, the earth and all its living beings is one under the same sky and everything we do is a result of how we think and how we choose to live. Let life be meaningful.

Many times I`ve stood on a mountain peak, looking at the world in a fantastic 360° view. Down there, the wild rivers and rumbling waterfalls looks so small and harmless. The distance of a day of heroic hiking looks like a mere baby step. I`ve felt so very small. Feeling small makes me grateful, loved and deeply touched by mother nature. In the far far distance, I can see things that I did not knew existed and how they all connect to form a vast landscape, a landscape that wildlife, plants and humans base their life upon, things that I normally only see a tiny fraction of and therefore cannot comprehend. In the same way, life is so much more than the tasks we perform in our everyday life, worries suddenly becomes insignificant and trivial in the great scheme of things and future is an endless, open space. Such moments are unique. Such moments gives rise to a deeper understanding of myself and life. It was in Rondane that I first really discovered the true joy of nature, mysteries of life and great potential of being a human. Moments when just a sip of ice cold meltwater on a hot summers day is bliss, when the last piece of bread becomes a hearty meal and when the rising sun brings tears to my eyes after a cold, lonesome night. Celebrating nature is celebrating yourself. Mother Nature is the future.
We are one...no matter where in the world you are.

Featured Fine Art Print for April: Flø Melancholy

April already? It`s time for featuring another Fine Art Print on the home page and for April,
I chose Flø Melancholy, photographed one year ago at Fløstranda, western coast of Norway.

Norway is a cold, snowy place in wintertime, that`s true. But, less known is the fact that most of the west coast has very little, or no, snow/ice and is generally warmer, than the rest of the country, during wintertime due to the Gulf Stream. During my 8 hour (north-west) drive to Flø, the temperature changed from -28 degrees Celsius to -2 degrees Celsius at the time I arrived the coast!

When I first started to read about the Gulf Stream a couple of years ago, I was so fascinated by how an underwater current that originates from the Straits of Florida going far north up to Greenland before returning south again, has so much impact on weather. The feeling I get when I stand by the sea, watch the breaking waves and listen to their characteristic sound, is somewhat unique and quite difficult to transform into words. Luckily, I think almost everyone knows the feeling, and sound, I`m referring to here. This feeling, is what I often try convey when photographing by the sea; a mixed feeling of fearless freedom and lonely solitude. Somehow, my fascination is awakened every time I look at the breaking waves at the west coast, knowing that they are in fact Gulf Stream waves that has travelled very very far, and is going to travel even further. The Gulf Stream, a current so strong that for a long time baffled sailors; though they had strong wind in their sails, the ships moved very slow, or even backwards in certain areas.

Flø, and many nearby coastline areas, are very fascinating, especially at this time of year when the Sunnmørsalpene Alps are still covered in snow while the coastline is starting to bloom. One year has passed, but I will return soon to once again be swept away by the raw beauty of this place before the mountain snow melts away. Do you want to see more of my monochrome photography? Latest Fine Art Print: Ranten II

During the last mountain trips to Norefjell, every afternoon the wind would increase in strength, which made photography difficult, let alone downhill skiing. One afternoon, while there was little wind, I stood on a ridge and scouted for promising subjects through my tele-lens and discovered this frosted group of trees. Half an hour later, I was admiring the hardy group up close and hoped that they would make a nice subject as soon as the sun was lower in the sky. I felt a little distracted by the pair of snowmobile tracks in the distance, but as the low light graced the landscape, I felt that everything came together perfectly. Things are what they are, nothing more, nothing less. What do you think? Does the snowmobile tracks look distracting to you?

Tilt-Shift Dark Edge Issue? Read On...

Since last month, I`ve been using my new Canon TS-E 24mm f/3.5 L II (tilt-shift lens) for most of my photography and I can only say; it is a truly remarkable lens and the finest lens I have ever owned, in fact, amongst the finest lenses ever made by Canon. That said, this post is not a lens review; it is about the limitations of most modern DSLRs designs when using a wide-angle tilt-shift lens shifted up more than 10mm. Note; in this case, a Canon 5D Mark II, 5D and a 1Ds Mark II was used for testing and whether or not other digital camera brands have more suitable mirror box design (those that have mirrors) is not concluded here. I would also like to include the notion that this is about the Canon TS-E 24mm f/3.5 L II (introduced in 2009) that is capable of 12mm shift, and not the first version (introduced in 1991), which has a shift capacity of 10mm.

On one of my recent mountain trips, I was using shift to make three exposures that would later be stitched together into a very high resolution photograph. When done correctly, one can stitch multiple exposures together seamlessly, just like in a well-crafted panorama. I did this by placing the camera in vertical orientation and used shift (up 12mm/left side of photograph, no shift for center and down 12mm/right side) that resulted in an approx. 4:3 format (my preferred format) when stitched. Although composing demands careful attention and is more time consuming than when seeing the whole composition directly in the viewfinder, it is easy to do and can be done quite fluidly with practice and visualization. After I had processed all three exposures equally in the RAW-converter and converted them to 16-bit TIFF-files, I first tried to manually stitch them together (which proved to be a bad idea due to parallax) by using three separate layers at different opacity in order to "sandwich" common points (rocks, mountain edges etc.) for correct and seamless result before merging them into one, single layer. It was during this process that I happened to discover a dark edge on one of the images! *when using panorama/stitching software like PTGui, Photomerge, Microsft ICE etc., any dark edge issues will automatically be blended out and will not affect the final result. So, don`t worry.

This is an unprocessed RAW-file imported from my Canon 5D Mark II with
in-camera settings *(contrast: -3, saturation: -1, sharpness: 6, no WB-correction), hence the flat appearance, photographed with camera in vertical orientation, 12mm upwards shift and 1mm tilt (for foreground-to-background sharpness). Notice the dark edge on right hand side!
Here is the final photograph, Ranten II, with contrast and custom WB adjustments and no visible marks of the dark edge, successfully stitched with panorama software.

Confused, I went through many of the other RAW-files to see if there were more with this dark edge and I noticed that in all exposures where I had used 12mm upwards shift, which is max. shift on this particular tilt-shift lens, there was a dark edge running along the side which happened to be nearest the center of the image circle! I had used no filters or filter holders (not even a polarizer), but even if I had, any physical vignetting would then appear on the opposite side of the image; the side nearest edge of the image circle. After going through all the raw-files from the latest mountain trip I found that when shifted down 12mm, or when using no shift at all, all images were fine and I therefore ruled out any sensor anomalies. The images where I had shifted 10mm up were also fine. The disturbing dark edge only appeared in the images where I had shifted up 12mm. To make a long story short, I still hadn`t gotten anywhere after having made extensive searches on the internet about this issue (with no results), testing with my back-up camera, a Canon 5D (also full frame), returned my lens and gotten a new copy (which also showed the same disturbing results), and having sent some emails to photographers that I know are experienced tilt-shift lens users, as well as great photographers, hoping that they would provide some answers to what causes this dark edge to appear. This turned out to be an obscure issue that some had never noticed while some never used more than 10mm shift. Darwin Wigget (www.darwinwiggett.com) was kind enough to do his own test with a 1Ds Mark III/same type of lens, and he did also find the same dark edge appearing in his results, when using 12mm upwards shift. That, at least, proved that there was nothing uniquely wrong with my own two copies of the lens, but it did not stop my fingers from further scratching my head. A day, and a lot of scratching, later...another email landed in my in-box, this time from Tim Parkin (On Landscape: www.onlandscape.co.uk). And, it all became clear, as a mountain stream, to me!

Tim Parkin explained that the dark edge issue was caused by mirror box occlusion in most modern DSLRs (not with mirror-less or film cameras) and happens when a lens is shifted so much that the light coming in through the lens is occluded by the edge of the mirror box. He further explained that the longer focal length, the less amount of occlusion and the reason wide-angles are affected the most is because the lens element is so close to the lens flange and also that the effect is least noticable when lens is fully stopped down. I was so relieved to hear that nothing was wrong with my equipment. Now, if you have just started using the Canon TS-E 24mm f/3.5 L II lens at 12mm upwards shift and is asking yourself: "What IS that dark edge doing there??", these brilliant illlustrations made by Tim Parkin "says a thousand words".

There you have it. Nothing is wrong with the lens; it is an issue caused by modern DSLR mirror box design when using a tilt-shift lens at 12mm upward shift, or in situations mentioned above. In practice, this issue should not be a problem as long as you don`t shift (up) more than 10mm with a wide-angle tilt-shift lens on a DSLR. If you for some reason need to use max. shift up (11-12mm), account for this issue or make at least two exposures with different shift amount and stitch them to overlap the dark edge. Let me also remind you that using software like PTGui, Microsoft ICE or the Photomerge in Photoshop, any mirror box occlusion effect will automatically be blended out. Due to the fact that this issue is not related to the remarkable image quality or functionality of this particular lens, I would highly recommend the Canon TS-E 24mm f/3.5 L II to anyone who is planning to buy a tilt-shift lens with optical performance that is amongst the finest in the whole Canon lens selection.

*oh, I almost forgot; in-camera settings like contrast and saturation, even white balance and color mode, affects the histogram readings. The histogram is based on JPEG-representation EVEN if you shoot RAW! That should explain why I use these in-camera settings. Latest Fine Art Print: Revelation

Winter of 2011 has not been successful for me, as a photographer. It has been mild, the weather mostly grey and most of the times when I have arrived at a planned destination; no light, foggy, stormy and so on and so forth. To photograph winter mountains successfully, light is important to reveal textures, forms and depth in an otherwise featureless, white and snowy landscape.
Last week, I went on two ski trips to this mountain area, hoping that there would be some light so that I could photograph not only the grand landscape, but also sastrugi and other abstracts. When the week was over, I had been lucky to have two afternoons with marvellous light and acceptable wind. In fact, soon after I had photographed Revelation, the wind chased me down from the mountain and made me fall over three times before I had ascended below the tree line. I look back with excitement, though it wasn`t nearly as dramatic as I remembered it to be. This photograph is the one that expresses my experience the best and therefore decided to share it with you. With time, I have become better at leaving my work alone for a while before I start editing, and when I do start editing, I give each photograph time to grow in my mind. I often find that the most obvious winners, suddenly become second best after my impression from a trip looses its grip on me. I often find that there is something beyond composition, light or subject that eventually awakens me from inside and helps me find the true winners. Time is essential when we try to figure out what we are looking for.

Technical notes: Canon 5D Mark II, with my new Canon TS-E 24mm f/3.5 L II tilt-shift lens, 3 exposures by using shift; up 10mm (upper third part of photograph), no shift (center part) and down 10mm (lower part), processed equally in the raw-converter, converted to 16-bit tiff-files and stitched together to create this 4x5 format with (relatively) very high resolution. Now, after a month of getting used to the tilt-shift lens, I can safely say that I am more than satisfied with its performance and I also feel right at home with the 24mm focal length as I have tended to use my old 17-40mm f/4 L USM in the 20-24mm focal range for a time now.
In a landscape composition like this, getting the right focus takes more time than with a standard lens, but when focus plane is adjusted to match the subject, I have everything from near to far in perfect, sharp focus. You must see it with your own eyes to really appreciate it and maybe I will post some sample images of this later on. I have also discovered a side effect of using some tilt-shift lenses, especially this particular (version II) lens that can shift to 12mm instead of just 8mm (version I), on a DSLR which I will write more about, together with how to avoid it, in an upcoming blog post.
