"The personal safety awareness workshops for our learners was one of the most exciting energising and interactive workshop I have witnessed in my working in Further Education. The feedback from learners and tutor was so positive that we will definitely have Sev back in to work with our learners again. In the workshops you can hear and see the learners growing in confidence. At the end of each workshop the learners’ only complaints are that they want more session's with Sev, she is an outstanding workshop facilitator. "

Anthony Robinson, Enrichment Manager

Feedback from learners has likewise been overwhelmingly positive. Amongst the anonymous comments received, many commented not only on how helpful the sessions had been, but also how enjoyable.

Comments from learners:

“It was useful and easy to understand how to be safe out on the street.”

“I learnt how to defend myself when I am being threatened.”

Sev delivered a "Personal Safety" programme to our young male pupils aged between 13-15. The sessions combined talking and practical exercises in personal safety. Teaching young people how to be safe on the street, street awareness and practical techniques in conflict resolution. Techniques also included knife work.

"I feel the session went very well and the kids that took part loved it because they always had a smile on their faces. They really learnt a lot about what to do in different situations.

I feel sessions like these should be ran a lot more because coming from Hackney myself these sort of things do happen, so you do need to know what to do if you come across danger.

Learning to use your voice and how to protect yourself is great. Thanks a lot.”
Davis Rizzolo Arsenal Coach

“I enjoyed the action and new self-defence technique.”

“I liked that I learnt what I could do to get out of a situation.”

“The session was very interaction.”

“Knowing what to do in a crime situation.”

“That we were role playing and doing a variety of self-defence.”

“It was fun. Also we learnt a lot of self-defence and the law.”

Arsenal in the Community’s works allows young people the opportunity to play football and take advantage of the other education, social inclusion and employment programmes they have to offer.

The Home Office says that, knife, gun and gang crime is wholly unacceptable and reducing it is a key priority for the government. Too many young lives are blighted by violent crime and we are committed to making our communities safer places for everyone.

The government’s has prioritised £10 million of Home Office investment into early intervention work in 2012-13, to support up to 30 areas 'most affected by gangs and youth violence'.

The Petchey Academy works together with the local community to identify and implement action, based on mutual respect and understanding of diverse cultures and contributions. The Petchey Academy’s sponsor, Jack Petchey follow his maxim, “If I think I can, I can” which proves an apt guide for anyone striving for excellence in their studies, extra-curricular activities and working relationships.

The training focused on “Personal Safety” as well as “Gang & Knife” crime. Through discussions and practical exercises the young people were able to engage in conflict resolution training. Some of the young people were from the poorest and most deprived communities, where violence and crime can be a normal occurrence.

‘Sev Necati’s workshops have helped us to educate our young people in a variety of subject areas. She has vast knowledge and experience in her field and breaks things down to young people in a way that they can relate to.’ Paul Motion Community Development Officer

“I especially enjoyed learning about how to protect myself from a knife.”

“I enjoyed everything.”

Leyton Orient s Community Sports programme Kickz allows young people to play football and other sport and educational activities, as well as learn to coach. It aims to break down the barriers between young people and the police, reducing crime and anti-social behaviour, as well as getting them to confront issues such as, gang related issues and the dangers of carrying guns and knives.

If you are working with hard to reach young people, those from Black, Asian and ethnic communities, those that have experienced violence, because of their own victimisation thus become perpetrators of crime, or any young person from the ages of 8 -25 then contact us. You, your organisation and the young people can also benefit from life saving training.

The training delivered to staff and management included teaching them to be aware, evaluate and diffuse situations. It provided a forum where they were able to ask questions about their own personal fears they may have in and outside of the workplace. They took part in a practical where what they had learnt in theory they could see and use in reality.

“We work in the community running Family learning courses and different adult only courses with a crèche . We work in different inner London boroughs, all our work happens out in the community , most of the time in very deprived areas. We tend to walk and use public transport.

All my staff were talking about the training for days afterwards and we will be personally recommending Sev’s training to others. Sev was great.”
Alison.L. Bernstein Family Learning Co-ordinator

“It made me more aware of what I should do in case things happen in the future. I also learned how to prevent myself from being a victim.”- Finnie

“I found this training extremely useful, both professionally and for my personal life. I am now more aware of how to conduct myself when out and about and also I understand better how to manage potentially difficult situations. Thank you. “– Mandy

“I found practising the defence moves to be really beneficial. Without the guided practise it is just all theory, but now I feel more equipped to deal with something if it arises.” - Lisa .

“I feel I have a better understanding of how to protect myself.” – Nuru

“I was attacked and mugged whilst walking alone almost 2 months ago. This was a devastating experience which affected my confidence and made me very afraid to walk outside. This incident also had a very big impact on my life as I need to do a lot of walking for my job and most of the time I am on my own , the fear of feeling so vulnerable was almost too much to bear , however after doing the training with Sev I now feel more confidence to walk outside alone and this is due to me being aware of how to protect myself and how to deal with potential difficult situations. I still feel quite vulnerable but I do have a greater awareness for my personal safety. Thank you.” - Alison

“It was fast-paced, no-nonsense advice, with an excellent practical”

“Excellent. Realistic and extremely helpful practical exercises”

City Lit is London's ultimate destination for inspiring evening, daytime and weekend courses for adults. Each year they offer thousands of part-time courses, always trying to follow new trends and the passions and interests of their learners. City Lit, was awarded Grade 1 'Outstanding' by Ofsted in July 2011.

The workshop included young people taking part in discussions as well as practical exercises in personal safety.

“I enjoyed the teamwork we all shared”

“I enjoyed the practical part of the session and the drills”
Arsenal in the Community’s outreach work has taken place on estates and parks - offering local young people the opportunity to play football with the department and take advantage of the other education, social inclusion and employment programmes they have to offer.

These programmes embrace a wide variety of community involvement and they’re delivered and received with the same energy and commitment today as when they started 25 years ago.

James one of the coaches who work's with the young people said. “Sev delivered the workshop well and the young people were able to understand what message was being delivered"

“I liked how I learned to defend myself”

In 2006, Tottenham Hotspur Foundation was selected as one of the four professional football clubs to pilot a Kickz project. Five years on, the Foundation has 8 kickz projects running.

Kickz uses sport and, in particular football as a catalyst for positive change but it is more than just football, it is about creating opportunities that can help change young people's lives, helping them to build their self-esteem and channel their energies in a positive direction and to help support them to achieve and fulfil their full potential.

Glen Hicks who looks after the delivering of the programme was very pleased with how Sev worked and engaged with the young people, saying the young people's feedback was positive.

"Sev worked with young people from the Hitz programme to deliver these sessions. The Hitz programme is based in the heart of inner city estates targeting young people at risk of exclusion and anti social behaviour. Introducing them to tag, touch and contact rugby; they utilise rugby’s unique ethos and the assets of the sport’s leading brands and players.

Sev worked with our young people in Hackney.

Do not allow a tragic event like the recent riots or another person to be stabbed or shot before you decide to do something. It is imperative that young people and adults are able to assert themselves confidently and positively in conflict.

The training is a life-skill that everyone should have. It could help save yours or someone else's life.

Tower Hamlets works with Sev Necati Training

Sev Necati Training working in partnership with Tower Hamlets summer university to deliver "Personal Safety" training courses to young people aged between 14-25 from across borough.

We all know about the recent tragic events of the rioting inside and outside London. It is imperative that young people and adults are able to assert themselves confidently and positively in conflict.

Let us help you to understand how.

The training is a life-skill that everyone should have. It could help save yours or someone else's life.

Sev Necati Training works with Leyton Orient

Sev Necati Training working in partnership with Leyton Orient and the "Kickz" Football Foundation to deliver "Personal Safety" & "Gangs & Knife" training courses to young people from some of the poorest and most deprived communities.

The young people engaged in the sessions positively and learnt a lot from the training sessions.

"I learnt my rights and got how to defend myself" said one young person.
"You can warm to her, as she doesn't hold back" said another young person.

Young people can gain confidence through the sessions. They are empowering for young people. It assists young people to become more aware.

“Thank you for your recent effort for the Girdlers Cup @ Forest Gate yesterday. Everyone involved played a key part to the event. This was from LOCSP apprentices, NSC young people to the LOCSP staff.

May I take this opportunity to give special thanks to Sev and Mike for your workshops you delivered as they was outstanding and added spice to the event.”
Shamajul Motin Senior Community Development Officer

If you are working with hard to reach young people, those from Black, Asian and ethnic communities, those that have experienced violence, because of their own victimisation thus become perpetrators of crime, or any young person from the ages of 8 -25 then contact us. You, your organisation and the young people can also benefit from life saving training.

Knife Crime Increases by 8%

Knife Crime Increases by 8%

The number of victims of knife crime in London has increased by more than 8% over a three-month period, the Metropolitan Police has said.

More than 3,600 people were attacked from February to April, the figures showed.

Murder of schoolboy in south London

A senior detective has said that the murder of a 16-year-old boy, who died after having his throat slashed by attackers, is among the worst he has investigated in 25 years.

Yemurai Kanyangarara was stabbed in the neck in nearby Welling.
Detective Chief Inspector Mark Dunne described the killing as an act of "sheer brutality against a defenceless schoolboy", adding that the murder – carried out in broad daylight on a busy street – was "about as bad as it gets".

No clear motive for the attack has emerged and police cannot confirm if the weapon used was a knife. The attack caused "catastrophic injuries" and the victim died "very quickly" after the attack, said Dunne.

With these alarming figures can you ignore the extent of the growing problem on our streets. These deaths that are happening in board day-light not only affect the victim's family and friends, but a whole community.

The police are an enforcement agency so cannot protect us 24-7. We have to be able to manage and resolve conflict ourselves when it is presented.

Too many young people unfortunately are being pulled into the culture of gangs, guns and knife crime. There may be many reasons why they are, but just like the rest of the public they have fears around being attacked.

If you or your organisation work with individuals or groups of people that can become vulnerable to such violence and be victims of crime then find out how some of our training programmes can assist.

Some Comments from Our Training Programmes:

“I learnt what to do if someone takes a knife out”

“It allowed me to see the best way to handle emergency situations”

“I liked the session has it was very helpful in learning more about how to protect yourself from street crime”

“I think it was very useful to keep me away from street crime and I would like to know more”

“Learning about self-protection is really good and useful for us. We learnt how to stop a person trying to cause us harm and I’m going to try this if something happens to me”

Personal Safety Workshops A Success!!!

Female learners at the College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London have been finding out how to keep themselves and their belongings safe around College and on the street from a successful former learner who delivered a series of much wanted sessions last year.

Sev delivered a series of successful sessions for us last year and we wanted her back again. The Vice Principal Jane O’Neill met Sev through an event organised by the Metropolitan Police. Sev has worked extensivley with the Metropolitan Police and we were keen to get her on board.

Feedback from learners has likewise been overwhelmingly positive. Amongst the anonymous comments received, many commented not only on how helpful the sessions had been, but also how enjoyable.

We delivered 14 taster sessions at Tottenham and Enfield which went down a strom.

"The personal safety awareness workshops for our female learners was one of the most exciting energising and interactive workshop I have witnessed in my working in Further Education. Also I really would appreciate if we could get more information about self-protection, it constantly helps”

“I think it was very useful to keep me away from street crime and I would like to know more”

“Learning about self-protection is really good and useful for us. Mel was so impressed she recommended to Rob that we go ahead and provide training to female students during refresher's week. The session was so successfull that the young women that attended have asked for more!

"More sessions! Seemed there wasn't enough time. After studying at Southbank University – an experience she says the College prepared her for very well – Sev studied as a fitness trainer in the UK and America, including time spent with a Special Forces team. Now she delivers training courses through her company, and has worked with Haringey Local Authority and the Metropolitan Police among others.

At the sixth of a recent series of taster sessions held in the College’s Tottenham Centre gym, Sev explained how the idea for the classes first came about: “I met the College’s Vice Principal Jane O’Neill through an event organised by the Metropolitan Police. We got talking and she invited me to come in and give these short introduction sessions to the College’s female learners. They’ve gone down so well that I’m now hoping to be run another series of classes at the College’s Enfield Centre too.

The tasters last an hour, and cover some basic ideas and practical techniques for how to act if threatened or attacked. Each group of learners has had the chance to role-play situations that they may face in their daily lives, such as being confronted by a mugger. Sev explains: “The emphasis is on awareness and avoiding physical confrontation if possible – that’s why I prefer the term ‘self-protection’ to ‘self-defence’. I also teach people about the law and their rights.”

Sev has certainly enjoyed revisiting the College, and said: “It has changed a lot since I studied here – the facilities like the gym where I’ve held classes are great. I’ve been impressed with the receptive attitude of the learners too – they’re keen to pick up the techniques, and have thrown themselves into the role plays.”Feedback from learners has likewise been overwhelmingly positive. Amongst the anonymous comments received, many commented not only on how helpful the sessions had been, but also how enjoyable.

http://www.conel.ac.uk/news_events/news/2010/march_2010/female_learners_get_a_kick_out_of_self_protection_tasters

These classes were so successful we delivered another 8 taster sessions at Enfield which went down a strom.

"Just to let you know the personal safety awareness activity delivered to our beauty learners last week was a great success. The feedback from the tutor and learners was that it was very interesting and that they had great fun. The lady delivering it was able to relate to the learners on their individual levels. Please let me know of future available dates as I would like all our groups to benefit from this very useful enrichment workshop". Up to 17 women, aged between 13 and 46, attended the 2 hour classes over a number of weeks. The classe's involved theory based discussions behind staying safe and personal awareness, as well as practical techniques.

The classes, which were targeted at females from the age of 13 years, ran throughout January and February . Sgt Tim Hannah of St Anns Safer Neighbourhoods team, said: "In the summer it was identified that a section of the community, especially females felt wary about using public transport in the local area and about walking home. We have been working hard to put together these classes with an excellent instructor and believe that this is a great way to learn how to stay safe in your local neighbourhood, as well promoting personal health."

All the feedback was positive. The majority of the women who attended were very positive about the skills learnt from the classes. Further courses are due to take place in a number of venues in St Anns and Harringay wards for March and April.

One participant says: We want more Training! Please let us all know if that's possible… Great Course Karen T

Another way says: I'm writing to thank you for the course of self defence. It was excellent. Sev was a wonderful teacher and the two community police women were superb and extremely helpful with advice. I will certainly mention it to neighbours to see if any women are interested as it was so worthwhile. If there is ever a follow-up course, I would be very keen to attend. Best wishes.
