Hello good people, the elusive blogger returns! She brings good news that she has a new hobby, which millions around the world have also started on. It is the (cliched and perhaps overdone) snapping of digital photos and editing them to look like vintage, holga-esque square film photography. But I like. Kudos to the existence of the iPhone, Hipstamatic and Instagram!

Creating our own paper models of existing products for Conceptual Design module. Hell I never knew that recreating a deceivingly simple-looking old camera would be so hard. When you start thinking that eating and sleeping are a waste of precious time, you know that you're going mad.

Work in progress for illustration class, on the concept of "Journey". Decided to try out vector illustration, with bold geometry and eye-catching colours. Tedious but will be done in a couple of weeks. Thank goodness for Intuos4. Looking forward to how it turns out!

A couple of weeks ago, I was still surviving on a pretty lousy Windows Mobile 6 running on a pretty lousy touch-screen LG phone which hanged every time I didn't pick up a phone call in time. Today I am the proud owner of the Apple iPhone, all thanks to my AWESOME DAVIER (who is, atm on his way to Japan)! It was really sweet and unexpected, so I gotta thank him here again. This Apple fangirl has finally had her dream realised!

My life has really changed since I got the phone and upgraded my mobile plan to a 3G data one. I feel so connected to the world 24/7, so much so that today when my phone battery died, I felt so totally helpless and lost. I think I may need Internet rehabilitation soon. I have been having heaps of fun with the applications, and the convenience I have at my fingertips have been applied even during class lessons, reallyy. Oh, and I was highly fascinated that screen shots can be taken of my iPhone screen. So here is a very eye-candy-ish application page that I re-arranged! These are the more major apps that I'm using, and somehow the the colours flow nicely. And I've noticed that many major social media websites use the colour blue. Interestinggggg.

So for the rest of the time that I am able to keep my hands off my phone, I've been using to struggle and stay afloat this semester. No time for LOST, no time for shopping, no time for keeping my room neat and tidy, no time for myself. 3 pairs of shoes/sandals died within this couple of months. I've been shamelessly donning flip-flops to lessons.

Okay. Another long month of perseverance, and then a sweet four month-long holiday. It'll be worth it.

Recess week

Finally I'm blogging again! I've yet to put up a new comments host after the sad loss of Haloscan. Queen of procrastination.

As you can tell, it's recess week and I ain't got no recess at all. Been working on the crazy 16-page magazine spread for Typography class, and I've managed to get my table horrendously messy. But actually, I kinda like this mess. Makes me feel pretty inspired and artistic.

Recess week is making me so sick of school work, which have incidentally increased by ten-fold, that I'd rather have normal school days and usual lessons. The lack of motivation and inspiration have made me depressed and moody. I actually already miss my friends. And look how time flies when it's recess week (not that we're having any fun at all); it's already Friday and I'm barely at 20% of my total school work. HURGHHHHH!!!

Also, it doesn't help that within February and this month, the weather in Singapore has become so unbearably hot. Elsewhere, halfway around the globe, Cyclone Xynthia is attacking Europe. The recent proliferation of earthquakes in Chile, Japan and Taiwan is just disturbing and depressing. Even icebergs from Antarctica are participating in spelling disaster for our weather system. HURGHHHHH!!!

Epic Life Update Post

Goodbye 2009, hello 2010! We are now at the final year of the first decade after Y2K. It is the age of rapid technological breakthroughs and new, novel things to marvel at every single day. Our lives are now governed by the Internet, our short attention spans as well as our ability to multitask and do everything with gadgets (specifically, the iPhone, which I have yet to own). 2010 will be my year of 21st birthdays. And hopefully my internship. And many more income-replenishing jobs along the way. It is also full of possibilities, chances and love. Oh, and fyi, we are 1075 days to 20.12.2012.

This blog post is me being reminiscent of the bitter-sweet (and in that chronological order) 2009 and being optimistic about 2010.

So since you see seventimestwo everywhere, what more appropriate way than to do a tribute to the special number 14. As a summary of 2009, here are the 14 things that happened in 2009 that had the greatest impacts on my life. Sadly, the general 2009 movers and shakers like Ris Low, Obama, Michael Jackson and Tiger Woods do not have any significant emotional effect on my own personal life. So let's begin.

Seventimestwo's 14 Things of 2009 That Impacted My Life

#14: South Park
Introduced by Davier. Of all the uber cool series, dramas and comedies to watch this year, I had to get myself hooked on the old, fairly cheap-production cost, simple animation and dry humoured South Park. Kenny is adorable. Also, it is more enticing because it's absolutely free to view here. Beware of crappy advertisements that come unexpectedly and unwelcomely.

#13: James Cameron's Avatar 3D
This movie had a really crappy storyline that barely deviated from Pocahontas, but the 3D experience was really exhilarating and revolutionary for the world of 3D movie production. As I said, Avatar was beautiful. And there is no other more appropriate word to describe it.

#12: Book-making and Perfect Binding
So we learnt how to make our own books in Visual Communication class and I've fallen in love with book making. And making boxes! And binding paper! And the sense of accomplishment is amazing. Especially if you can remain on a super low budget. Because I print in school, and I scavenge for any (cheap or free) materials available to me. I like how I save money on projects.

#11: Learning To Ride A Bicycle
I learnt how to ride a bike, finally! After twenty years! And the most amazing thing was I learnt it entirely on my own, in half an hour, on New Year's Eve, a day before 2010. How's that. It was also my first time actually successfully getting my kite up in the sky. Thanks to my dad's amazing kite-flying skills!

#10: Disney Pixar's Up
I love the whole dialogue-less montage at the beginning, I love the music score, I love the idea of a floating balloon house, I love the animation. Thought the middle portion lacked punch, but this movie was oh-so memorable for other reasons. I remember trying to hold up those 3D glasses while eating Long John Silver's and feeling so honored sitting amongst those amazing people from Lucasfilm.

#9: Canon EOS 1000D
Getting the DSLR opened up in me a whole new passion for photography. I was more than "trigger happy", I was more like 'trigger obsessed" as I couldn't get enough of the soft clicking sound from pressing the shutter. Got pretty hooked to it for a period of time, but the craze has since gone down. Really useful for documenting work and when I feel a wave of artistic inspiration hit me.

#8: Tesseract
With Pei Wen and Tioranu; those sleepless nights and consecutive McDonald's meals were torturous, but fun. All that vinyl sticker pasting and air bubble-busting would never be fun without the two fellow partners in crime. And it was seriously of criminal standards, for those ugly scars we have engraved on the walls of ADM would make us vandals. Thank goodness Ina says to keep there "infinitely". I've never felt so proud of an artwork before. See it here!

#7: Performing with ADM Music District
My very first performance with a band and playing drums, guitar, and keys – Mid Autumn Festival, Halloween and End-of-sem. I got more involved in ADM events after I joined MD. And I realized how much musical talent we have in this school. Singing Christmas carols a cappella, impromptu, without scores, with peers in an art, not music school, is pure insanity. There had to be more than 8 parts at any one point. Yet we did it. I'm glad I found fellow harmonizing kings and queens in ADM.

#6: Marutama
Introduced by Davier. Please, everyone who loves noodles should have a bowl of this sinful luxury. Top-ups of noodles costs only 2 dollars, which the guys can go on for about 4 more bowls each time. Char siew is heavenly, savoury smoothness that melts in your mouth. And just the mere thought of the soup is making me salivate right now. I didn't quite know how to appreciate it the first time I ate it, but my love for it grows exponentially as I frequent Marutama more. Best ramen in town, there is no other.

#5: Driving
Finally got my license, after 44 points and immediate failure. I have since driven around in my dad's Mazda here and there, but not exactly everywhere. Love the feeling to be behind wheels and to be in control. But I still suck at road directions and streets. Can't navigate around for nuts.

#4:Christmas
This Christmas has to be the most wonderful one I've had, besides those childhood ones when I'd receive presents from Santa Claus. Spent most of the Christmas period with Davier, which made it extra special and warm. Attended his church musical, his family's party and basically just spent time together. I have never celebrated Christmas like this before, and now it only reaffirms my love for this beautiful season.

#3:Taiwan
Lovely scenery, stinky toilets, dirt cheap shopping, cool weather, gastronomical food made the week-long holiday around Taiwan awesomezxzx. My family and I spent some good quality time together. And we also encountered a helluvan experience. Our tour bus hit someone on a motorbike. Oh, all that fright and horror.

#2: FOC
This year I was heavily involved in the Freshmen Orientation Camps. Two of them in fact, and I gained a lot from them. Sleepless nights of preparations, but I've grown closer to so many of my peers, and seen true colours of so many more. More importantly, I truly had a lot of fun. Fun that you'll never experience anywhere else. Especially ADM's FOC. Fright Night was the best.

#1: Davier
My life was very dramatic in early 2009. Like some epic korean show. I also never planned on love this year, yet things just happened. Things started coming into place by October 1st. And now it's all just peaceful and blissful. It's amazing how our paths crossed so many times before, yet we barely knew each other then. I'm now happy, and it's all that matters. x)

New year, new beginning, new website! Woot, after a couple of nights of Adobe Illustrator and playing around with HTML and CSS, I finally got me a new blog layout! And yes, (I apologize) it's back to Arial. I'm still working on my portfolio site, so links to my portfolio pages are not working just as yet. Coming really soon. I hope I don't get lazy. Epic Work Update Post

Hello again everyone! It's been a while. Pardon me for the lack of updates, for I've been pretty lazy after that one crazy helluva semester. So I'm finally uploading more work on this blog. I did some significant projects during this previous semester, so I've got pretty much to blog about now. I hope the messy chronological order won't affect your visual pleasure.

BE THERE OR BE SQUARE

This was an exhibition proposal for our History of Graphic Design class. The zeitgeist was for "Suprematism and Contructivism", so I worked around the idea of celebrating geometric shapes. The first one is a detailed proposal for the exhibition. The second one below is the invitation; it is supposed to contain an envelope of geometric shapes in the form of stickers to allow the recipient free creative play on the invitation itself. TYPOGRAPHY CLASS JOURNALS

And here are the two books that I did for my Typography class with Astrid. The first one is a letter journal, in which we focused on a single letter and documented it. The latter is my process journal.

The night before submission, the two books were printed entirely in school. I have Davier, Ken and Tioranu to thank for their printing credits. THANK YOU LIFE SAVIOURS. The double sided-printing was a bitch. Alignment went wild and I had to trial and error so many times I killed a lot of trees that night. The papers were then painstakingly cut and perfect bound by hand. The white glue barely had enough time to dry! (Which explains why my book is now falling apart, sadly.) Anyway, the hard cover was made of mounting board wrapped with, surprise surprise! Free brown paper from Viscomm Lab! Words were then transferred onto the cover and back using the highly intoxicating xylene on the morning of the submission.

And there you have it, a super low budget but still professional-looking books all in one night!

I didn't actually document all my other individual projects here, so I think the process journal I did for Typography class with Astrid is enough to speak for itself. Hence I'm posting the pages here, so you can see them all at once!

BOKEH is cool stuff. The effect is just gorgeousssss! And I finally spent some time experimenting with it with my 1000D. Okay so
1. I didn't clean my lens properly, hence the dust specks
2. The images were blur cos I didn't use a tripod
3. I only had access to the lights I can see from my house. Mainly traffic lights and roads. Hence no control over the colours, and the background (too much light around).

But besides these, there's purely no editing, only cropping and rotating!

All these are just experiments. My first time playing with this effect. Some really worked well, but most of the others just failed. But they still look pretty to me!! I want to do a Christmas lights one soon. Perfect season for this.

The Complex Of All Of These

This video is just too inspirational for me, so I have to post this here.

I think every Viscommer can sympathise greatly with this video, seeing how 35 books are painstakingly hand-made with perfectionism, from the stamped type on the pages to the needle-stitched binding; oh the sense of achievement when you see those completed precious babies! Seeing this video has made me so inspired. I feel like making more books now.

But no, I've got USS to study for. Urgh.

The AAHpproaching Storm

14:08:44 hours, The Approaching Storm – Lakeside is drowned in a 2012-worthy storm while the roads at Chinese Garden are still sun-baked and dry. Kinda feels like what I am going through now, a fast approaching inevitable apocalypse of catastrophic proportions about to engulf me and I can do nothing to stop it except to mug for (Japanese) Asian Art History, Forensic Science, Understanding Singapore Society and History of Graphic Design. Now why the fish does an art and design student need to do so many (irrelevant) papers? So much for L.I.F.E. @ NTU (where Learning Is Fun and Exciting @ NTU!!!!!!!). SERIOUSLY. The slogan of a University?

Finally finished all the projects for my studio modules, ending yesterday, after a gruelling 24-hour no-sleep strike in ADM. I thought I'd be dead before the deadlines were met, but once again I managed to miraculously survive. The studio work this semester has really been quite enriching and I'll be posting more photos of my works soon. Though some were not documented with photographs yet. D= Geez I hope Astrid returns us our works.

My entire family has also taken ill, down with flu and so we sound like a family of Snuffleupaguses talking to each other.

I know I'm slow, but I finally caught the much-raved about Juno. It's a cute movie, and the actress acting as the protagonist, Juno, is really a charm. The soundtrack is lovely too – more indie music to add to my collection :D Indie's my current aural therapy.

Okay back to reality. Three books to produce in a week. Phuket, Thailand.

FINALLY a weekend break from school work and escaping the impending doom of end of semester crunch time! It's been detrimental to my projects and studies. But oh so fulfilling.

We caught two lovely movies back to back, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and 500 Days of Summer.

Both really light-hearted movies, nothing serious or heavy. Highly recommend the former, Cloudy, though, because it really cracked me up. For once I'm glad I gave this non-Disney Pixar animation a chance. Totally worth it. Witty and full of puns and lovely animation. And emotional; I cried for a good whole minute. Just my type. Awesomeness.

Twas' also my first time ever dining at Kenny Rogers, okay I know I'm such a mountain tortoise. Food was goooood. Can't believe I missed out on all these for the past twenty years. But the servings were too huge. Neither of us finished our chicken pot pies. And just hanging out, spending time, makes me so happy.

Oh and this weekend, I also baked cupcakes and jammed with Music District for Halloween on 29/10/09. Costumes. Free booze. Drunk people. Mad world. Keys. Rock music. Evanescence. Drums. YEEEEEEEEAHBABYYYY \m/

The Chaos After Recess Week

And so ends my crazy week of insane submissions, almost-breakdowns, and last minute mugging. All thanks to me being distracted during the one week of recess, and procrastinating a whole awful lot. I shall try not to do this again; I highly doubt that I can perform any more miracles like that. It's scary. Feels as if you're facing death.

MAF was a blast and although the turnout wasn't that great, we still had a blastin good time and it felt SOOO FRIGGINNN DOPEEE. MY FIRST £*&)!)$*$! TIME PERFORMING!!!! It was especially high when we got the crowd on their feet during the first song, Starlight by Muse. Aww man whacking the drums was just awesome possums! I drummed to Starlight, Wu Ding and Way Back Into Love, sang and strummed for Like A Star, and harmonized for Cheng Li De Yue Guang and Dancing in the Moonlight. That's a pretty long repertoire for a first time performer, I thought I'd be so nervous but I was surprisingly relaxed after a while.

Screwed up a little here and there, couldn't hear myself while singing into the mic and it sucks listening to the recorded version of my own voice! It's like hearing your own voice being recorded is bad enough, now its a recording of the mic-ed version moreover. Eww.

But still, here to watch my two favourite pieces heeheehee.

I think that Music District is really pretty amazing, and we've got really many talented individuals who share the same passion in music making. It's just so wonderful to discover hidden abilities amongst friends and people which just make you admire them so much more. Jamming is addictive. And damns shioks. Ah I'm really so glad I joined MD. Better late than never. Halloween up next, rock onnnnnn! \m/
