La Torre Pelli continúa creciendo.

Después de unas semanas de agrias polémicas entre partidos políticos, organizaciones locales económicas y urbanísticas, articulistas de medios de comunicación, blogueros y algunos voceros de esperpéntica opinión, la entidad Cajasol continúa con la firme proposición de finalizar la torre de su propiedad según el diseño del afamado arquitecto argentino César Pelli concibió en su origen.
La UNESCO pretende que éste se modifique y que las obras se paralicen antes de ser un proyecto irreversible. La entidad financiera no ha dado orden en ese sentido y el edificio, que tendrá a su ¿finalización? una altura de 180 metros para dar cobijo a 40 pisos, ya tiene construidas 18 de las estas 40 plantas.
Lo que sí es verdad es que, cuando llegue a su cima, el edificio Cajasol romperá el skyline de la ciudad dominado actualmente por la Giralda que siempre ha actuado de "techo" al urbanismo de Sevilla y también de "tapón" para proyectos de embergadura que ayuden a diseñar una Sevilla más moderna y atractiva con iconos de valor arquitectónico real que sirvan como reclamos para los visitantes.
Si el proyecto se termina tal cual, la Torre Pelli será como el edificio Metropol Parasol, polémica para diez años e icono para el resto de la vida de nuestra ciudad.

El Vanitas de la Capilla de la Orden Tercera.

En el altar de la Capilla de la Orden Tercera que, como ya hemos mencionado en otras ocasiones, está en la Calle Cervantes, podemos ver este cuadro barroco de autor incierto que apela a un tema que la religión nos ha recordado desde tiempo inmemorial, el tema de la vanidad humana.
O "vanitas" como los más letrados llaman apelando al latín.
En él podemos ver los cinco elementos propios de este tipo de obras pictóricas.
Primero, la calavera que representa la certeza de todos vamos a morir. Segundo, la vela representa la fugacidad del tiempo (tempus fugit, carpe diem). Tercero, el reloj de arena representa la incertidumbre del momento de la muerte. Cuarto, la pompa de jabón nos habla directamente de la vanidad por su rapidez en desaparecer. Y quinto, la mariposa, el único símbolo positivo del cuadro, recuerda el espíritu de cada uno que permanece tras la muerte.

Gracia que tiene Triana.

Paseando por Triana descubrí esta pequeña y estrecha calle que une la Plaza de Chapina con el Paseo Nuestra Señora de la O.
Cuando vi el nombre de la calle no tuve más remedio que sonreir al ver cómo se la había dado oficialidad a la célebre gracia que tienen los trianeros en todo lo que hacen.
Esta gracia, este pellizco, este arte que hay en Triana bien merecía poner un monumento o rotular una calle, pero nada más lejos de la realidad.
Al parecer esta calle está dedicada a una artista llamada María Gracia Jiménez Zayas, más conocida por el nombre de Gracia de Triana o el apodo familiar "La Calentito" en referencia al negocio de churros que regentaba su familia.
Mi gozo en un pozo. Aunque espero que este pequeño bosquejo bloguero sirva para que también el "arte y la gracia" de Triana sea reconocida de una manera fehaciente.

Más dura será la caída.

¿Será peligroso o no?
Este pino tiene una curvatura troncal que asusta a cualquiera que pase bajo sus verde sombra, ya sea a pie o en algún vehículo a motor.
Está en la Calle Zaragoza, en su extremo más cercano a la Plaza Nueva.
Como todo árbol de este porte, me imagino que tendrá unas raíces bien ajustadas en el subsuelo y no debemos temer por una posible caída, pero eso no cambia que cuando lo vemos tal cual está en la foto, lo evitemos rápidamente.

La Fuente del Palacio de Sánchez-Dalp.

El Patio de la Alcubilla es, si seguimos el itinerario normal dentro del Alcázar, el último que nos encotramos antes de llegar hasta el Apeadero, la sala por donde salimos al exterior.
Pues bien, este patio, aparte de tener el privilegio de ser el lugar donde se instaló la primera pista de tenis de España, alberga actualmente una joya a modo de fuente.
Es la fuente del Palacio de la familia Sánchez-Dalp.
Este palacio estuvo ubicado en la plaza del Duque y, junto con otros dos, fueron derribados en los años 60 del pasado siglo para construir el edificio actual de El Corte Inglés.
Poco fue recobrado de tamaña destrucción, la fuente que era el centro de un patio interior, entre lo poco que se salvó.
La fuente fue realizada en el año 1600 según podemos ver en una inscripción de la misma fuente.

Well then, this court, apart from having the privilege of being the place where was installed the first tennis court in Spain, shelters nowadays a jewel like fountain.
It is the fountain came from the Palace of the Sanchez-Dalp family.
This palace was located in the Duque Square and, together with other two, they were knocked down in the 60s of last century to construct the current building of the big stores el Corte Ingles.
Little was recovered of this destruction, the fountain that was the center of an interior court, between the things that was saved.
The fountain was built in the year 1600 as we can see in it.

El Bar Alfalfa.

En los días de sol y luz, desde la vecina Plaza de la Alfalfa podemos recrearnos en la vista de la belleza de este edificio. Está justo en la esquina de la Calle Candilejo con Calle Águilas.
El edificio, de cuatro plantas, tiene, en su parte baja, un esmerado y pequeño bar que ofrece comida típicamente andaluza en la que se pueden degustar los mejores bocados de nuestra gastronomía a un precio razonable.
Eso sí, los codazos por hacerse con un hueco en la barra no hay quien los evite.
La esquina del edificio está rematada con una balconada de cristales, otro balcón sin cristales y una corona sobre fachada en la que se lee el año de construcción del edificio: 1931.
En esta época estaba de moda la arquitectura regionalista que, si bien no define al edificio, sí es utilizada en él.

El maestro Manuel Delgado Brackenbury dejó su impronta en varias de las estatuas y fuentes de nuestra ciudad, casi todas ellas relacionadas con la Exposición Iberoamericana de 1929.
Hoy podemos ver el conjunto escultórico llamado "La Ciencia", uno de los cuatro que está situado en la Glorieta de Covadonga, emplazamiento donde también firmó otro conjunto dedicado al trabajo.
En el conjunto hay tres personas, la central, una mujer representando a la madre ciencia, a su izquierda aparece otra mujer ilustrada portando libros, a su derecha un viejo pensador en actitud reflexiva.

Los conventos de Sevilla.

En el pasado mes de Diciembre, el historiador Manuel Jesús Roldán presentó su libro "Conventos de Sevilla", una documenta y amena descripción de cada uno de los veinte conventos a los que hace referencia y que tuvieron lugar en nuestra ciudad a través de los siglos.
Hace un año leí, del mismo autor, su libro "Iglesias de Sevilla". Sin duda, esta obra ha supuesto una herramienta imprescindible para conocer un poco más de la profunda historia religiosa de Sevilla.
Ahora es el momento de conocer un poco más estos reductos religiosos desconocidos para muchos sevillanos

Donde nació Juanita Reina.

En el corazón del barrio macareno, en la Calle Parras, el Ayuntamiento de Sevilla tuvo a bien dedicar un azulejo a una de las grandes de la canción española y andaluza, Juanita Reina, quien en un caloroso 25 de Agosto de 1925 vino al mundo en esta calle.
Excelente cantante y actriz triunfó con su voz en los teatro más importantes de España. En Sevilla comenzó su andadura con éxito en el Teatro San Fernando. En varias ocasiones colgó el no hay billetes en el Teatro Lope de Vega. Culminó su carrera con un excelso espectáculo ("Azabache") en la Exposición del 1992 junto a Rocío Jurado, Nati Mistral, Imperio Argentina y María Vidal.
Tras su muerte, el maestro Antonio Burgos le dedicó unas palabras que la definen completamente:
"Más que española, andaluza. Más que andaluza, sevillana. Más que sevillana, macarena. Más que macarena, de la calle Parras.
En el barrio, seguía siendo la hija de Miguel el Pescadero, que, como tantos padres macarenos, quería que su niña fuera artista.
Cerca del Arco contaban que la Virgen tenía pelo de verdad, que era la mata de pelo que, como una saeta, se había cortado Juanita Reina para entregárselo a su Esperanza, a la que tantas veces había cantado la "Salve" que le escribió Manuel López Quiroga con letra de Rafael de León".

El Imperio Romano más grande.

Dice la historia que aprendimos en nuestros cursos de bachillerato que Publio Elio Adriano nació en Itálica el 24 de Enero del año 76 de nuestra era y murió en Bayas el 10 de Junio del año 138. Fue conocido oficialmente durante su reinado como "Imperator Caesar Divi Traiani filius Traianus Hadrianus Augustus", y "Divus Hadrianus" tras su deificación y consiguiente subida a los altares imperiales.
También dice la historia que el comúnmente conocido como Adriano, fue emperador del Imperio Romano durante veintiún años, desde el 117 hasta su fallecimiento, y que fue el tercero de los cinco emperadores buenos y el segundo de los emperadores hispanos,
Lo que muchos no sabemos o no tenemos las suficientes referencias histórico-bélicas, es que durante el imperio de este filósofo estoico, el imperio romano alcanzó la mayor dimensión jamás alcanzada por los romanos llevando sus fronteras a las Isla Británicas, a la Germania, todo el norte de África, Judea, Egipto, llegando hasta los límites de Mesopotamia a cuya conquista renunció por considerarla indefendible por el costo humano y económico que suponía.
En el Museo Arqueológico de Sevilla podemos ver su busto. A la altura del pecho se aprecia un relieve de la cabeza de la Gorgona Medusa, elemento que le gustaba ostentar como indicativo de su origen divino. Sobre el hombro izquierdo lleva echado el manto imperial, prendido mediante una gran fíbula (hebilla) circular. La escultura, realizada entre los años 135-140 d.C., procede de Itálica.

La tumba del León de Cristo.

El sepulcro de Francisco de Paula Tarín Arnau, o Padre Tarín, como se la ha conocido popularmente desde hace más de un siglo que pisó nuestra tierra procedente de un pueblecito valenciano llamado Golleneta, se encuentra en la iglesia del Sagrado Corazón de la Compañía de Jesús, en la calle Jesús del Gran Poder, y se ha convertido desde hace poco más de cien años en lugar de peregrinación, especialmente todos los viernes del año, cuando sus fieles devotos no faltan a la cita.
El padre Tarín murió en olor de santidad en Sevilla, el 12 diciembre 1910, fue declarado Venerable en 1987 por Juan Pablo II y está en marcha el proceso de beatificación.

Casi un siglo después de su fallecimiento, el padre Tarín sigue siendo una referencia de devoción popular para los que esperan de su mediación favores espirituales.

Tarín fue un jesuita misionero y dedicó su vida a los más necesitados del barrio de San Roque. Cuando predicaba en la iglesia parroquial, los feligreses, casi todos obreros anarcosindicalistas, le sacaban en hombros y lo paseaban por la plaza de Carmen Benítez.

Cuenta la historia, que nada más conocerse la noticia de su muerte, los sevillanos comenzaron a ir a la iglesia del Sagrado Corazón donde estaba expuesto su cuerpo. Más que un entierro parecía una procesión clamorosa y entusiasta. Llevaron el cuerpo del Padre Tarín descubierto, a hombros hasta el cementerio, entre gritos que le proclamaban santo, padre de los pobres, consuelo de los afligidos, apóstol de Jesús, León de Cristo...".

Son muchos los sevillanos que le tienen devoción y a él acuden para rogarle alguna intercesión milagrosa. Los agradecidos dejan junto a su tumba alguna muestra de afecto.

Francisco de Paula Tarín Arnau's sepulcher, or Father Tarín, since he has been known popularly for more than one century that come to our land proceeding from a Valencian village called Golleneta, is in the church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus' Company, in Jesus del Gran Poder Street, and has been for little more than a hundred years place of peregrination, specially every Friday of the year, when his devout people go to this church.
Father Tarín died in holiness in Seville, on December 12, 1910, was declared Venerable in 1987 by the Pope John Paul II and the process has started.
Almost one century after his death, the father Tarín continues being a reference of popular devotion to those who expect his mediation for spiritual favors.
Tarín was a missionary Jesuit and dedicated his life to the most needed people from San Roque's neighborhood. When he was preaching in the parochial church, the parishioners, almost all workers anarchist- tradeunionist, get up him in shoulders and they walked along Carmen Benítez Square.
The history tells, that known the news of his death, the Sevillian people began to go to the church of the Sacred Heart where his body was exposed. More than a burial he was looking like a clamorous and enthusiast procession.

Adulcido a regla.

El edificio del Archivo General de Indias es único por muchas razones.
Por la historia del propio edificio, mandado hacer por el Rey Felipe II a petición de la Iglesia para dar satisfacción a los mercaderes de todo el mundo que se daban cita en Sevilla.
Por la historia que contienen los millones de documentos que se guardan entre sus paredes.
Por su belleza singular herreriana.
Y también, por tener un elemento arquitectónico único en España: la escalera que une la primera planta con la azotea.
Esta escalera fue realizada por el maestro cantero Miguel de Zumárraga en 1609 y está construída al modo "adulcido a regla".
¿Qué significa, en términos arquitectónicos "escalera a regla adulcida" o "Adulcida a regla"? Que la escalera no tiene, en todo su recorrido, ningún apoyo para sotenerse, a excepción de la pared cuyo interior va rodeando.
Aunque la foto no muestra todo el esplendor de la escalera, podemos ver con el vano central de la misma no tiene ningún elemento vertical para sostener la piedra que sirve de escalinata.
Al fondo, o sea, arriba bajo la azotea vemos una bóveda con decoración concéntrica de escamas tallada por Gregorio Hernández en 1611. En el centro hay una gran cartela con las letras "JHS" rodeado de querubines.

The building of the General Archive of The Indies is unique for many reasons.

What it means, in architectural terms "stairs a regla adulcida" or "adulcida a regla"?
That the stairs does not have, in all its way, any element to support itself, with the exception of the wall.
Though the photo does not show the whole brilliance of the stairs, we can see as the central hole of the same one it does not have any vertical element to support the stone that uses as stair.
To the bottom, we see a vault with concentric decoration of scales carved by Gregorio Hernández in 1611. In the center there is a great cartela with the letters "JHS" surrounded with cherubs.

La Capilla del Corral del Conde.

Casi todos hemos aprendido desde pequeño que la Capillita de Carmen junto al puente de Triana era la más pequeña de Sevilla, al menos, entre las transitadas y conocidas por el público.
Hoy os voy a presentar una capilla aún más pequeña, aunque ésta está situada en un recinto privado, el Corral del Conde.

La capilla también está dedicada a la virgen del Carmen. Tras la reja que vemos en la foto apenas hay un habitáculo de tres metros cuadrados en el que hay un pequeño altar y, sobre él, un cuadro de la Virgen del Carmen que, como vemos en el azulejo, pertenece a la Fundación de Casa Ducal de Medinaceli y está inscrito entre los bienes legados por el Duque de Segorbe.

Pero no fue esto lo que más me llamó la atención. en su interior, a ambos lados de la capilla, había dos cuadros recordando dos milagros de la virgen.
En el de la izquierda se recuerda al niño Antonio García Revuelo, de 28 meses de edad, que sobrevivió a una caída desde el primer piso el 5 de Julio de 1879.

En la pared de la derecha se recuerda un milagro parecido. En este caso fue una niña, María del Carmen González Palao, quien cayó de un segundo piso el 14 de Julio de 1949, a los 31 meses de edad. Sobrevivió al golpe gracias a la mediación salvadora de la Virgen del Carmen, según la creencia popular.

Almost we all have learned when we were kids that Carmen's Small chapel close to Triana's bridge was the smallest chapel in Seville, at least, between the travelled ones and known by the public.
Today I am going to present a chapel furthermore small, though this one is placed in a private enclosure, the Corral of the Count.
The chapel also is dedicated to the virgin of Carmen. After the grating that we see in the photo scarcely there is a cockpit with three square meters in which there is a small altar and, on it, a picture of the Virgin of Carmen who, since we see in the ceramic, belongs to the Foundation of Medinaceli's Ducal House and is inscribed between the goods bequeathed by the Duke of Segorbe.
But it was not what more is interesting for us. In the interior zone, on both sides of the chapel, there were two pictures remembering two miracles of the virgin.
In the left side there is remembered the child Antonio García revuelo, 28 months old, who survived a fall from the first floor On July 5, 1879.
In the wall of the right, a similar miracle is remembered. In this case she was a girl, Maria del Carmen Gonzalez Palao, who fell down from the second floor On July 14, 1949, 31 months old.
Survived to the blow thanks to the mediation of the Virgin of Carmen, according to the popular belief.

El Jardín Botánico de Monardes.

En la Calle Sierpes, donde actualmente está situado el edificio de la relojería El Cronómetro, podemos ver este azulejo en recuerdo del cuarto centenario de la muerte de un gran humanista y científico del siglo XVI, don Nicolás Bautista Monardes Alfaro.
El Sr. Monardes nació recién descubierta América, en 1493, en Sevilla y murió también en Sevilla en el año de 1588. No debió tratarle mal la vida pues vivió 95 años en una época en la que llegar a cincuenta era ya un mérito.
Su trabajo más significante y conocido fue "Historia medicinal de las cosas que traen de nuestras Indias Occidentales", publicado en tres partes bajo diversos títulos (de 1565, 1569 y completado en 1574 y reimpreso sin cambios en 1580).

Para ello, crió y cuidó un jardín con plantas, flores y semillas que le traían los galeones de las Indias españolas. Y este jardín, cuenta la historia, estuvo en este edificio de la Calle Sierpes.

In the Sierpes Street, where nowadays the building of the watchmaker The Chronometer is placed , we can see this ceramic piece in recollection of the fourth centenary of the death of a great humanist and scientist of the 16th century, don Nicolás Bautista Monardes Alfaro.

Mr. Monardes was born newly disclosed America, in 1493, in Seville and died also in Seville in the year of 1588. The life should not have treated badly because he lived 95 years in an epoch in that to come to fifty was already a merit.

His more significant work and acquaintance was "Medicinal History of the things that they bring of our West Indies", published in three parts under diverse titles (of 1565, 1569 and completed in 1574 and re-printed without changes in 1580).

Monumento a Colón.

En el centro del bucólico y romántico Paseo de Catalina de Rivera podemos ver un inmenso monumento dedicada a Cristóbal Colón y a la gesta del descubrimiento de América.
El monumento, que aporta el elemento vertical al paseo (tiene 23 metros de altura), fue diseñado por el arquitecto Talavera y ejecutado por el escultor Lorenzo Coullaut Valera, y fue dedicado a Colón en consonancia con los eventos de la Exposición Iberoamericana de 1929, momento en que se realizó.

El monumento está coronado por un león, cuya garra de la mano derecha se apoya sobre un orbe terrestre, símbolo del poderoso imperio español del siglo XVI acrecentado por las tierras descubiertas por el Almirante de la Mar Océana.

A media altura hay una escultura de bronce que refleja a una de las carabelas que acompañaban a Colón en el viaje hacia las Indias.

In the middle of Catalina de Rivera's bucolic and romantic Way we can see an immense monument dedicated to Christopher Columbus and the discovery of America.

The monument, which contributes the vertical element to the way (it is 23 meters high), was designed by the architect Talavera and executed by the sculptor Lorenzo Coullaut Valera, and was dedicated to Columbus in agreement by the events of the Latin-American Exhibition of 1929, moment in which it was realized.

The monument is crowned by a lion, which claw of the right hand rests on a terrestrial orb, symbol of the powerful Spanish empire of the 16th century increased by the lands discovered by the Admiral of the Ocean.

The monument has a sculpture that reflects to one of the caravels that were accompanying Colon in the trip towards the Indies.

In the low part, surrounded by a fountain, we can see a medallion with the effigy of Columbus and another medallion with the shield of the Catholic Kings, economic impellers of the adventure.

De cómo salir del purgatorio.

En la fachada de la Iglesia de la Magdalena podemos encontrar esta lápida de mármol blanco a la que el paso del tiempo y de sus inclemencias ha dado un color amarillento parduzco.
Es curiosa su leyenda, que dice más o menos así:
"Nuestro Santo Padre Benedicto XIII del Sagrado Orden de Predicadores, por Bula dada en Roma Apud Santam Mariam Maiorem el día veintidós de Septiembre del año MDCCXXIV (1724), primero de su pontificado, concede para siempre a todos los sacerdotes de dicho Orden que diciendo misa en cualquiera de los altares de las iglesias de su sagrada religión saquen del purgatorio el ánima del difunto de quien la aplicaren."
Pues bien, ya sabemos que, aunque seamos malas personas en nuestras vidas (pero sólo un poco para no ir al infierno y sí al purgatorio), sólo con que después de muerto nos apliquen una misa podremos salir del mismo.
Déjenle claro a sus sucesores la manera de proceder para cuando falten de este mundo, no vaya a ser que nos veamos en una situación comprometida en otra vida.

In the front wall of the Magdalena´s Church we can find this tablet in white marble that the passage of time has given it a yellowish color.
There is a curious legend, which says, more or less, this way:
"Our Holy Father Benedicto XIII of the Preachers' Sacred Order, for Bulla given in Rome Apud Santam Mariam Maiorem on September twenty-two of the year MDCCXXIV (1724), first of his pontificate, grants forever all the priests of the above mentioned Order that saying mass in any of the altars of the churches of his sacred religion extract of the purgatory the soul of the deceased of whom they will apply it. ".
Well then, already we know that, though we are bad men or women in our lifes (but only a little bit bad not to go to the hell and yes to the purgatory), just after we dead, our family must apply a mass to us and we will be able to go out of the same one.

La Calle de los Tiros.

Juan Martínez Montañes fue un escultor español que trabajó entre la escultura del Renacimiento y la del Barroco.
Se formó en Granada y completó su educación en Sevilla, donde se estableció para el resto de su vida, convirtiéndose en el máximo exponente de la escuela sevillana de imaginería.
Sevilla siempre ha estado en deuda con él y por eso le ha dedicado estatuas y le ha puesto su nombre a una calle.
Pero la actual Calle Martínez Montañés antes tuvo otro nombre no menos sugestivo: la Calle de los Tiros, como podemos ver en este azulejo instalado en la misma calle.
Como me ha sido imposible documentarme acerca del significado y la historia de este nombre, acudo a la sabiduría popular para que alguien nos ilumine sobre el mismo. Lo agradeceremos todos.

Juan Martínez Montañes was a Spanish sculptor who worked between the sculpture of the Renaissance and that the Baroque.
He studied in Granada and completed his education in Seville, where he established his home for the rest of his life, turning into the maximum exponent of the Sevillian school of imagery.
Seville always has been in debt with him and, because of it, the city has dedicated statues to him and the name of a singular street.
But the current Martínez Montañés Street had another not less suggestive name before: the Street of the Shots, since we can see in this ceramic piece installed in the same street.
As it has been impossible to me to get the meaning and the history of this name, I have a call to the popular wisdom in order that someone tell us about the same one. We will be grateful for it.

El acceso a los Baños de Doña María.

Desde hace pocos años podemos disfrutar, en el Alcázar sevillano, de la visita a los llamados Baños de Doña María. Aunque su entrada natural estaba desde el Patio del Crucero, actualmente los visitantes podemos hacer desde el Jardín de la Danza.
Ya los baños propiamente dichos son de una belleza extraordinaria, pero hoy quisiera mostrar la entrada a este recinto que, si bien no está restaurada (nos preguntamos por qué no), merece una parada.
Tanto la deteriorada bóveda como los azulejos que le sirven de zócalos están fechados en el siglo XVI (1565-1579) por lo que, desde el punto de vista histórico tienen ya un valor incalculable.
El recinto estuvo cerrado hasta el siglo XVIII, razón por la cual este entorno arquitectónico estuvo fuertemente condicionado por el microclima actual propio de cuevas donde la presencia de vías de agua, el elevado nivel de humedad y la falta de luz y ventilación, explican su precario estado de conservación.
Quizá la adecuación de los murales y pinturas interiores tengan una mayor necesidad de restauración y hayan dejado para el final la entrada al recinto.
Espero, por le bien del monumento y de los que nos interesamos por la historia de nuestra ciudad, lo podamos ver en su esplendor en poco tiempo.

From a few years we can enjoy, in the Sevillian Alcazar, the visit to Dona Maria's Baths. Though its natural entry was from the Court of the Cruise, nowadays the visitors can go into from the Garden of the Dance.
Already the baths, in strict sense, have an extraordinary beauty, but today I wanted to show you the entry to this enclosure that, though it is not restored (we wonder why not), deserves a stop.
Both of them, the damaged vault and the ceramic pieces that were used as socles are dated in the 16th century (1565-1579) for what, from the historical point of view they have already an incalculable value.
The enclosure was closed up to the 18th century, reason for which this architectural environment was strongly determined by the current own microclimate of caves where the presence of water leaks, the high level of dampness and the lack of light and ventilation, explain its precarious condition of conservation. Probably the adequacy of the murals and interior paintings have a major need of restoration and this entry has been left to the end .
I hope, because we are interested in the history of our city, we´ll see in its brilliance in a little time.

Los terrenos del Virrey.

Gracias a la costumbre muy sevillana de poner lápidas por donde sea (ahora se llevan los azulejos), en nuestros días podemos recoger información de hechos que de otra forma quizá hubieran pasado desapercibidos.
Si paseamos hoy en día por el barrio de Santa Cruz, no podríamos reconocerlo sin la Plaza de los Venerables y el Hospital que le da nombre a la misma.
Pues bien, eso no siempre ha sido así.
El terreno en el que se sitúa el conocido Hospital, ahora perteneciente a la Fundación Focus-Abengoa, fue un regalo que le hizo el piadísimo señor Don Pedro Manuel Colón de Portugal, a la sazón, Grande de España, Almirante de Indias, Duque de Veragua, Duque de Gelves, Marqués de Villamizar y de Jamaica, aunque no disfrutó el señorío de este último por haber sido tomada la isla por los ingleses en 1656. En 1675 recibió la orden del Toisón de Oro.
Don Pedro sirvió como maestre de campo en los tercios de Flandes y posteriormente como general de la caballería del Milanesado. Entre 1677 y 1679 fue capitán general de Galicia, entre 1679 y 1680 fue virrey de Valencia, de allí pasó a capitán general de las galeras de España, y de 1696 a 1701 desempeñó el virreinato de Sicilia.
En 1699 fue nombrado miembro del Consejo de Estado de Carlos II, y ya de regreso en España presidente del Consejo de Órdenes en 1703, cuyo cargo le obligó a renunciar al Toisón de Oro para recibir el hábito de la Orden de Santiago.
Pero volvamos al principio. Una lápida situada en el recinto interior del edificio certifica este hecho. En ella se le da tributo "a mayor honra y gloria de Dios" a este benefactor de los Venerables Sacerdotes.

If we walk nowadays along the neighborhood of Santa Cruz, we might not recognize it without the Venerable ones Square and the Hospital that gives name to the square.
Well then, it not always has been like that.
The area in which there places the acquaintance Hospital, now belongs to the Foundation Focus-Abengoa, was a gift that Don Pedro Manuel Colón of Portugal made when he was Great of Spain, Admiral of The Indies, Duke of Veragua, Duke of Gelves, Marquess of Villamizar and Jamaica, though he did not enjoy the dominion the latter for the island having being taken by the english in 1656. In 1675 he received the order of the Toisón of Gold.
Don Pedro served as field master in the war of Flanders and later as general of the cavalry of the Milanesado. Between 1677 and 1679 he was a general captain of Galicia, between 1679 and 1680 he was a viceroy of Valencia, from there he happened to general captain of the galleys of Spain, and from 1696 to 1701 he recovered the viceroyalty of Sicily.
In 1699 he was nominated a member of the State council of Carlos II, and already of return in Spain he was president of the Advice of Orders in 1703, which forced him to resign the Toisón of Gold to receive the habit of the Order of Santiago.
But let's return initially. A tablet placed in the interior enclosure of the building certifies this fact. In it there is a tribute "to major honor and God's glory" to this benefactor of the Venerable Priests.

La casa de Monipodio.

En la Calle Betis, frente a la Torre del Oro y con unas vistas extrordinarias del Gudalquivir, la Giralda y la Catedral, podemos encontrarnos con la llamada "Casa de Monipodio", una casa que, actualmente, es un corral de vecinos con un espacio abierto interior y pequeñas habitaciones que dan a un patio de luces con cierto aire dieciochesco.
El nombre le viene dado gracias a Miguel de Cervantes, quien imaginó en este edificio la casa de Monipodio, uno de los personajes estelares de la novela "Rinconete y Cortadillo".
Así lo atestigua un azulejo colgado en la pared lateral del edificio.

Según D. José Mª de Mena (Sevilla habla de Sevilla, Ed. Castillejo, 1992), “El patio de Monipodio, es el nombre que tenía una casa abandonada en la cual se reunían los vagabundos y mendigos en una época en que en este lugar hubo muchas casas en ruinas o asoladas a causa de la explosión del Molino de la Pólvora, que destruyó medio Triana, hundió el Convento de Los Remedios y rompió todas las vidrieras de la catedral”.

In Betis Street, opposite to the Tower of the Gold and with a beautiful sights of the Guadalquivir River, the Giralda Tower and the Cathedral, we can meet so called " Monipodio's House ", a house that, nowadays, is a neighbors' corral with small rooms that meet to a court with certain view from other centuries.

The name is thanks to Miguel of Cervantes, who imagined in this building the Monipodio's house, one of the stellar prominent figures of the novel "Rinconete and Cortadillo".

This way it is testified by a ceramic piece hung on the lateral wall of the building.

According to D. Jose M ª de Mena, "Monipodio's court, it is the name that had a house where the vagabonds and beggars were meeting in an epoch in which in this place there were many houses in ruins or destroyed because of the explosion of the Mill of the Gunpowder, which destroyed Triana, sank the Convent of The Remedies and broke all the windows of the cathedral".

Las Bulas de la Santa Cruzada.

Este edificio que ustedes ven medio en ruinas es el Monasterio de San Jerónimo de Buenavista. Su estado actual es injusto con su legado histórico-religioso.
Allá por el año 1413 el religioso Fray Diego Martínez, procedente del Real Monasterio de Santa María de Guadalupe, funda el monasterio de San Jeronimo en el lugar conocido como "Pago de los Mazuelos", a las afueras de Sevilla, junto a un meandro del río Guadalquivir.
La orden jerónima se instaló en él, dándole un orden público poco acostumbrado en aquellos momentos, porque para sus sustento destinó algunas celdas para ocupación de visitantes a nuestra ciudad. De hecho, en sus aposentos durmieron reyes como los Reyes Católicos, Carlos V, Felipe II y Felipe IV.
Fue, precísamente, el rey Felipe II, que lo visitó en 1570, quien le concedió el privilegio de imprimir las Bulas de la Santa Cruzada para las Indias allá por el año 1575, instalando los frailes para tal fin, una imprenta en el interior del monasterio.
En el monasterio estaba la obra de Torrigiano, el San Jerónimo en terracota que marcó un antes y un después en la imaginería renacentista española, creando las bases para el barroco andaluz con importantes influencias en Martínez Montañés, Juan de Mesa, etc. Lo podeis ver en este enlace: http://sevilladailyphoto.blogspot.com/2010/07/san-jeronimo.html
Tras la Desamortización de Mendizábal en 1835, el edificio se convirtió en fábrica de vidrios que un inglés (Mister Hodson) puso en marcha a partir de 1843.

Se utilizó también como cortijo privado y lugar de celebraciónes de una familia noble sevillana (Los Salvatierra).

Actualmente está declarado Monumento Histórico-Artístico y pertenece al Ayuntamiento de Sevilla.

This building that you see, this building in ruins is San Jerónimo of Buenavista Monastery. Its current condition is unjust with its historical-religious legacy.

As far back as the year 1413 the religious Monk Diego Martínez, proceeding from the Santa Maria of Guadalupe Royal Monastery , founds San Jeronimo's monastery in the place known as "Payment of the Mazuelos", to the suburbs of Seville, close to a meander of the Guadalquivir river.

The jeronimo´s order established itself in it, giving a public order little viewed in those moments, because for its sustenance destined some cells for occupation of the visitors to our city. In fact, in their rooms slept kings like the Catholic Kings, the king Carlos V, the king Philip II and the king Philip IV.

The king Philip II was who visited it in 1570, who granted to them the privilege of stamping the Bullas of the Holy Crusade for the Indies as far back as the year 1575, installing the friars for such objective a press inside the monastery.

After Mendizábal's Disentailment in 1835, the building turned into glass factory that an Englishman (Mister Hodson) started from 1843.

It was in use also as private farmhouse and place of fair for a noble Sevillian family (The Salvatierra).

Nowadays, it is deckared Historical - artistic Monument and belongs to the Town hall of Seville.

La Calle Morgado es una callejón estrecho que une la Calle Amor de Dios con la Plaza de San Martín.
En la esquina de Amor de Dios con Morgado hay una droguería-perfumería decorado tal como lo hacían los establecimientos alla por los años cincuenta o sesenta del siglo pasado.
Paseaba por estas lindes un sábado de poco tránsito cuando reparé en esta dos hornacinas que podemos ver en la foto. Dos hornacinas que están a la altura de un primer piso y sobre una de las puertas que tiene el establecimiento.
Me llamaron pronto la atención porque se veía en su interior dos estatuas.
Como la curiosidad es la madre de la sabiduría no me quedó más remedio que entablar conversación con el dueño de la droguería quien me refirió la siguiente historia:
"Al parecer dichas estatuas romanas fueron encontradas en el muro de la fachada cuando se decidió reconstruir la antigua casa en 1940.
El arquitecto, Antonio Delgado Roig, decidió integrarlas en el nuevo edificio y no se le ocurrió mejor forma que crear estas hornacinas desde donde se podían observar y quedar lejos de posibles robos o vandalismos."
Estas son algunas de las curiosidades de nuestra ciudad, que vaya por donde vaya, sorprende al que se detiene a mirarla en cualquiera de sus rincones.

Morgado Street is a narrow street that joins Amor de Dios Street with St Martin Square.
On the corner of Amor de Dios Street with Morgado Street there is a drug store-perfumery decorated like the establishments were doing in fifties or sixties of last century.
I was walking there on Saturday afternoon when I repaired in two niches that we can see in the photo. Two niches that are at a height of the first floor and on one of the doors that the establishment has.
I put my attention in it because I saw in their interior part two statues.
As the curiosity is the mother of the wisdom I began a conversation with the owner of the drug store who told me the following history:
"Apparently the above mentioned Roman statues were found in the wall of the front wall when it was decided to reconstruct the former house in 1940.
The architect, Antonio Delgado Roig, decided to integrate them in the new building and b create these niches from where people could observe it and stay far from possible thefts or vandalisms."
These are some of the curiosities of our city, which everywhere you goes, it surprised yourself.

El mal llamado Palacio del Infantado.

En los números 26 y 28 de la Calle Santa Ana nos encontramos con esta Casa-Palacio que lleva el nombre de "Palacio del Infantado", declarado monumento-histórico-artístico y que hoy forma parte de los edificios que dependen de la Concejalía de Cultura del Ayuntamiento.
Pues bien, ese letrero que ven ustedes en la base de las columnas de la derecha y que más abajo pongo en un tamaño mayor, nos lleva a confusión.
No se sabe a ciencia exacta quién fue el que puso este nombre al edificio, pero lo hizo errando el tiro, porque tal Palacio no fue mandado construir por ninguna persona perteneciente a la familia del Duque del Infantado.
Tal vez el nombre se deba a la estancia por algunos días algún Duque del Infantado en él, lo que no es suficiente para otorgar nombre alguno. Sobre todo, porque menoscaba el prestigio y el hacer de la familia titular de dicho Palacio: los Marqueses de Medina.
Para mayor ahondamiento en esta titularidad sólo tenemos que estudiar el escudo de piedra que está situado en la parte superior de la fachada, el escudo nobiliario del Marqués de Medina.
Pero claro está, una cosa es la historia y otra muy diferente es el acervo y la memoria popular. Me parece a mí que aquí hemos topado en piedra y el sevillano de a pié seguirá llamando a esta Casa-Palacio con el nombre que ha sido conocido siempre: Palacio del Infantado.

In 26 and 28 Santa Ana Street see this House-Palace that takes the name of "Infantado´s Palace", declared historic-artistic monument and that today depend on the Culture Councillorship of the Town hall.
Well then, this sign that you see in the base of the right columns takes us to confusion.
It is not known to exactly who was the one that put this name to the building, but he did it missing the shot, because such a Palace was not ordered to construct for any person belonging to the family of the Duke of Infantado.
Maybe the name should be because of the stay in it some days by the Duke, which is not sufficient reason to grant any name. Especially, because it reduces the prestige of the propietary family of the above mentioned Palace: the Marquesses of Medina.
We have to study the shield made in stone that is placed in the top part of the front wall, the pertaining to nobility shield of the Marquess of Medina.

La higuera milagrosa.

Hace algunos meses os hice referencia a una pequeña capilla que hay en la Calle Cervantes, la Capilla de la Orden Tercera.
Esta capilla, por sí misma, es una joya barroca que merece la pena visitar, pero en su interior guarda algunas joyas y algunas curiosidades como la de la foto que podemos ver hoy.
Entrando en la capilla, en el muro de la derecha junto a la puerta hay un pequeño cuadro con una hoja de higuera y un papel a modo de certificado en el que se habla de los poderes milagrosos de la higuera de la que procede esta hoja.
Según consta en el documento, la hoja fue traída por Don Isidoro Acemel y Rodríguez y fue entregada como recuerdo al Presbítero Don Francisco de Sales Manzano y Alés, quien era, a su vez visitador de la Orden de San Juan de Alcántara de nuestra ciudad.
La hoja proviene de la "higuera milagrosa de San Pedro de Alcántara" que existe en la ciudad del Pedroso de Cáceres en el convento del Palancar.
Dice la historia que los compañeros de San Pedro de Alcántara le hicieron ver la necesidad de plantar una higuera en el convento y le pidieron permiso para ir a los caminos a por una y traerla.
San Pedro clavó en el suelo su bastón y de él brotó la higuera que se puede ver en el convento. De las propiedades de sus hojas y frutos se hablan milagros. Ya hace quinientos años de este hecho, la hoja de la foto tiene ciento nueve años (1902).

Some months ago I told about a small chapel that there is in Cervantes Street, the Chapel of the Third Order.
This chapel is a baroque jewel, but in its interior guard some jewels and some curiosities as that one of the photo that we can see today.
Going into the chapel, in the wall of the right, close to the door, there is a small picture with a leaf of fig tree and a paper that speaks about the miraculous power of the fig tree from which this leaf comes.
As the document says, the leaf was brought by Don Isidoro Acemel y Rodríguez and was given to the Prevost Don Francisco de Sales Manzano y Alés, who was, in turn visitor of the Order of San Juan de Alcantara of our city.
The leaf comes from "San Pedro de Alcantara miraculous fig tree" that exists in the city of the Pedroso de Caceres in the convent of the Palancar.
Says the history that the companions of San Pedro de Alcantara made him see the need to plant a fig tree on the convent and to ask him for permission to go to the ways for one and to bring it.
San Pedro fixed in the floor his cane and from it sprouted the fig tree that it is possible to see in the convent.
Already five hundred years ago of this fact, the leaf of the photo has hundred nine years (1902).

El coro de San Bartolomé.

La Iglesia de San Bartolomé, a pesar de estar construida sobre una antigua sinagoga judía, es una de las más recientes de nuestra ciudad, ya que en el año 1779 fue derribada por completa para volverla a construir según los cánones neoclásicos del arquitecto Antonio Matías de Figueroa y la supervisión de la obra de José Echamorro.
A los pies del templo, dicho arquitecto diseñó el coro que vemos en la foto con su sillería de madera rodeando el perímetro del lugar y con un facistol al centro del mismo.

The Saint Bartholomew Church, in spite of being constructed on a former Jewish synagogue, is one of the most new of our city, since in the year 1779 it was knocked down for complete to turn it to constructing according to the neoclassic style of the architect Antonio Matías de Figueroa and the supervision of Jose Echamorro's work.
To the last part of the temple, the above mentioned architect designed the choir that we see in the photo with these chairs made in wood surrounding the local perimeter and with a lectern in the middle of the same one.
