Sew Lux 2025 Club Project Recap

We've had a lot of fun sewing up different projects this year and thought we'd share a "year in review" round up of all the 2025 Club Projects ...

Our Pouch Club is our longest running club (since 2017!!!) and in 2025, we featured six new projects in this bimonthly series ...

We did the Ribbon Ruffle pouch in January - this one has two different sizes and styles.

Then in March, we introduced our first pouch pattern + acrylic template combo with the Paragon Pouch.

May brought us a super fun block-based project - the Piecemaker Pouch. This one has a patchwork back from a Mini Charm Pack.

July featured the Ruby Star Society Strawberry collection in the Candy Gems pouch. This classic style is a go-to that works well with any style of fabric and also uses a Mini Charm.

September was a fun one - the Swivel Pouch. This uses our Mini Tumbler template and one Charm Pack will make all three sizes OR use a Mini Charm to make the Large OR the Medium and Small sizes. These make a great gift set, too! We loved how fun it was in Washi Plus.

November brought us ONE more acrylic template based project (apparently a theme this year!) - the Patchwork Slice Pouch and Slice Template.

On to the Pillow Club ... we love this quarterly club because we play with seasonal designs/fabrics so you can change things up throughout the year.

For a Spring pillow, we featured a "tulip" block in our Tulip Season Pillow.

And then in the summer, featured a star with a unique patchwork border in our Courtyard Star Pillow.

Fall brought us Patchwork Leaves in August ...using a Mini Charm for a scrappy set of leaves with a Grunge background.

And then for Christmas, the Scrap Star Pillow ... this one quickly became a bestseller after we released the pattern on our website. It would look great in ANY Christmas collection, but also in Halloween or Patriotic colors too.

OK ... now for the Table Runner Club recap ...

Spring featured the Sweet Blooms runner in Tango by Kate Spain.

Summer brought us Fairfield in an assortment of patriotic prints - this is also one that would look great in colors for other holidays like Halloween or Christmas! We love the two different backgrounds. You can also see another version of this one on the Moda blog here.

And then Golden Glow to celebrate everyone's favorite Fall flower!

And Boughs of Holly, our most recent pattern, to celebrate the Christmas season.

And that is a wrap on our Club projects for 2025! We'll be continuing all three of these project clubs in 2026, if you want to join the fun! Learn more and sign up here.

Shift Quilt - a Project Jelly Roll Pattern

We're so excited to share a NEW (and FREE!) quilt pattern with you - the Shift Quilt - that I wrote for Moda to celebrate this year's Sew a Jelly Roll Day!

This is Jelly Roll friendly, but could also be cut from a Layer Cake or even fat quarters.

This quilt is actually super easy as it is just one block that gets rotated and "shifted" ... and the sashing helps create the movement like ribbons dangling or spinning in the breeze.

I made this one in Brookside by 1Canoe2 which is arriving in stores now (Sept 2025) and it's such a beautiful collection.

My quilter, Suzan at Singing Stitches, did a great job with the quilting using a panto called "Onion Skin." And I think its looks great on this one.

I used the large floral from the collection for the backing and love all the different flowers, including the hydrangea.

Selvedge Magic Name Pouch Tutorial

The new Ruby Star Society Selvedge Magic has hit our store and I couldn't be more excited to finally have it available so everyone can make the these fun little pouches for all the people they love!

My favorite thing about these pouches is the ability to customize them for whomever you're planning to make and share them with. There are so many people I know with uniquely spelled names and this is the perfect way to honor them and make them feel special!

You can download a printable for this project here. And if you are new to sewing pouches and installing a zipper, check out one of our many videos on our YouTube channel here to watch me do that step.

A few things to share about this fabric.... the repeat on it is 18" and the letters are 1.5" tall by 1.25" wide.

I cut up my yardage and used this Artbin to store them separated by letter. This was a little more work on the front end, but I appreciate not having to be constantly trying to cut out a specific letter from yardage.

After I select my letters, I sew them together and carefully press the seams open. Since the pieces are little this helps it lay a little flatter.

Then I make a patchwork background for the front. You can cut from a variety of prints, or use leftover 2.5" squares from other projects. You can also use one fabric as well - check out the printable (linked above) for more details on this.

I have found that with five letter names, this turns out to be a perfect 4.5" wide so you don't need to do any print matching. For names shorter or longer than 5 letters, you will need to do some print matching as seen below. I use 1.5" x 2.5" strips of background prints for the middle panel that I am piecing with the name. You can see what I mean in this photo of some I recently made for some favorite people of mine ...

(If you are making a name longer than 8 letters, I would recommend sizing up the pouch to 6.5" x 10.5" wide.)

Then I sew a strip of (4) 2.5" squares to the top and bottom for a pouch front measuring 6.5" tall x 8.5" wide.

Once I have the front made, I will quilt it to Soft & Stable and shape it with a 1" square cut out in each bottom corner to box the pouch later.

To make the back, I have done this in two ways... one method is to continue the scrappy theme with patchwork from my scrap bin of 2.5" squares. Make a panel of 3 rows of 4 squares to make a 6.5" x 8.5" panel. Quilt and shape in the same manner as the front.

Another method is to quilt a piece of the coordinating Selvedge Magic Icons print, trim to 6.5" x 8.5" and shape with the corner cutouts.

*Note: I stay stitch 1/8" from the edge of all panels when I am making a pouch before I install the zipper - this keeps all layers in place nicely as I am manipulating the bag when installing the zipper and then turning it right side out at the end.

I use zipper tabs in most of my projects. My zipper length with tabs is always 1" shorter than the width of the pouch front. In this case, that means they are 7.5" wide.

Install the zipper and turn your pouch right sides out. (Again, if you need help with the assembly process, check out a video on our YouTube channel.)

I have to warn you ... these are addictive to make AND you're going to be making people's day when you gift these. Which is, in my opinion, THE BEST part of being a maker ... sharing your work with others.

Here are some more photos for you ...

The two styles of backing I use ...

And it's fun to add a name to the side of a bag like on this pocket of my recently finished All Things Tote by Knot & Thread.

Make it even more special with a unique label on the side ... add this after quilting but before installing the zipper. This cute cat label I added on to fellow cat lady friend of mine.

My Patchwork All Things Tote

Recently, I attending a quilting retreat with some friends and made a new bag! I thought I would share a little more about the bag and how it all came together ... especially since I didn't plan ahead to make it!

I flew to this retreat and borrowed a machine from one of the other attendees. And since I was flying, I was pretty conservative with my packing for my projects! I precut two quilts and a table runner, which I took along. And I had some Mini Havenview flower blocks already cut out so I tossed those in my suitcase along with some letter fabric (more on that below) and a bag of low volume scraps ... "just in case" I finished my quilts early and had a little extra time.

Well, I finished all my projects and had some time! And several of the girls had all made the All Things Tote by Knot & Thread and I loved their great size, so I bought the PDF and realized that my limited fabric stash I brought with me was going to make this difficult! I had happened to pick up some FQs from the local shop in town, so I basically challenged myself to make it happen with what I had.

If you've been following my on Instagram for awhile, you can probably guess that I love to add patchwork to projects - especially bags. I figured out that the medium size of this tote was perfect for two of the Havenview blocks I had made to fit side-by-side. To get the length I needed on the panel, I did some math and added some 2.5" low volume squares to the top of the flowers and pieced a bottom between the flower panels.

Of course, I didn't get a great picture of my panel before assembling the bag, but you can probably get the idea from the picture below. I didn't make any other adjustments to the pattern for the medium size. I pieced together a couple of low volume fat quarters for the lining and borrowed some Soft & Stable and 505 spray and got to quilting!

I mostly did some outline quilting in the flowers and then a crosshatch in the background and low volume squares. The print I used for the bottom and end panels happened to have a grid in the design, so I used that as a guide to quilt some diamonds.

You can see the quilting pretty well in this picture of both the diamonds and the crosshatching. This was also a great time to add some fun labels to the pocket when I attached the binding. :)

For the second side pocket, I had a little fun with the Selvedge Magic Letters sample fabric I got from Moda. (Note: this fabric comes out in June 2025 - a link to it is at the end of this post. I have so many fun ideas for it that I can't wait to share with you all!)

I quilted this one in the same way as the other pocket. And I love that is personalizes my bag!

I used some 1.5" Starry webbing for the handles (linked below). I had planned to maybe use a bolder black & white webbing, but I am glad I went with this one. It's fun, but doesn't distract from all the piecing!

I really had a lot of fun with this bag and am really pleased with how it all came together, despite it being a bit of a challenge with the limited fabric and supplies I had taken to retreat! I also love that whenever I use it, I will be reminded of a fun few days with friends!

In this post of the Pumpkin Harvest Table Runner, we're sewing the pumpkin blocks.

I like to start by sorting out the fabrics for each of the pumpkin blocks. Since this project is scrappy, I will mix up the prints to create a "variety" of pumpkins for my project.

Begin by drawing a diagonal line on the wrong side of each small square. And then follow the directions in the pattern to add them to each of the rectangle strips that will create the pumpkin.

I also want to point out that since the pattern calls for two different background prints, you'll want to pay attention during assembly that you are using the correct prints when adding background pieces.

Once you have assembled the pumpkin body, attach the stem unit to the top - matching the background prints.

You'll need a total of 5 pumpkins for this project. Watch me make on in this video on our YouTube channel.

Pumpkin Harvest Table Runner Sew Along: Cutting

The Pumpkin Harvest Table Runner pattern is stash and scrap friendly! And certainly you could make it even scrappier by mixing in more fabrics for the pumpkins and leaves.

The first step is to cut everything you will need. For this version I am making, I dug through my stash and scrap bins to find oranges and fall colors for the leaves. I prefer to use small scale prints that read as one color for this project, but that is really a personal preference.

Note that this pattern uses two different background fabrics to create a subtle stripe effect on the runner. You can definitely use all one background, if you prefer.

I'll see you back here for the next post in the series - making the pumpkins.

Have you seen the new Lollies from Jen Kingwell? Greenstone is really something special ... the soothing colors in this collection are just so lovely and a pop of bright green is a lovely touch as well.

This collection has a precut we don't always see - the Dessert Roll. This is kind of like a Jelly Roll, but the strips are 5" wide instead. Look at all the lovely prints from one Dessert Roll of Greenstone Lollies ...

I cut 9 of 12 Lollies strips up already and am working on some scrappy stars. From each print (a 5" x 10" section printed on the fabric), I cut one 4.5" square and one 5" square. Add some background and these stars come together pretty quickly! I can't wait to show you more next week.

We're re-sharing one of our oldest & most-pinned tutorials from back in the "Blogger Days!" ;-) (p.s. Wow ... photograph has come a long way!)

Ready for a fun (and easy) tutorial? I whipped these Easter baskets up this afternoon ... and you can do it too ... just in time for Sunday! haha (Tell me I am not the only last-minute-stitcher out there! :-)

Anyway ... something to note about the tutorial. I took pictures while making my prototype (pink, flowery version). For the blue and green baskets above I modified the size a little (smaller)and I like it better. The method is the same, but I will give you the measurements for the slightly smaller ones above.

Materials Needed (per basket):

1 FQ for outside of basket & strap

1 FQ for lining

1 FQ for backing of quilted lining

Batting (1 FQ)

Heavyweight fusible interfacing (1 FQ)

Marking pen (such as the FriXion pen)

Basic Sewing Supplies (machine, thread, iron, etch)

From your outside fabric FQ, cut two pieces - one 15" x 18" rectangle and one 6" x 18" rectangle. Iron fusible interfacing to the wrong side of both pieces.

Next, fold the larger rectangle in half and pin along the edges. (Folded rectangle should measure 15" x 9".)

Then, stitch along edges using a 0.5" seam. Press the fold well before moving on to the next step.

Fold the side seam up along the pressed fold on the bottom to form a point as shown. Press the point and side seam open.

Mark a line to stitch along using a ruler. I like to use a ruler that has a 45 degree angle line on it. (NOTE - photo shows 3" from seam on each side, or a 6" long line from edge to edge. For the blue and green baskets, I measured 2.5 inches from the seam to the edge of the triangle - or a line that is 5" from one edge to the other.)

Stitch along the line. Repeat on the opposite side.

Once you turn it right side out, it should stand up.

Set the outside of the basket aside for now. Layer the backing fabric FQ, batting, and then lining fabric FQ to make a quilt sandwich. Quilt as desired. Trim to 15" x 18".

Now, repeat the process to create the basic basket like you did with the outer fabric. Fold and pin.

Stitch the corners on both sides as before.

Now, lets make the handle. Take the 6" x 18" piece of outer fabric (with the fusible interfacing on the wrong side). Fold it in half. Then fold the edges into the center, using the fold mark as a guide. The fold in half.

Stitch along both edges and then the center of the handle.

Trim the handle to 16" long and then mark the center of the outer basket shell on both sides.

Attach the strap with a line of stitches 1/4" from the edge.

Now, let's put it all together. The lining of the basket should be WRONG SIDE OUT!!! The outer shell should be RIGHT SIDE OUT. Place the outer shell inside the lining. RIGHT SIDES ARE TOGETHER.

Start by pinning at the side seams. Then pin your way around the top of the basket.

Then carefully stitch around the top of the basket using a 0.5" seam. Leave about a 3" opening between one side seam and handle.

Turn the basket right sides out. Press the seam well and pin the opening closed. Top stitch around the top of the basket about 1/4 from the edge. This will close the opening and keep everything in place.

You're all finished! Admire your work! :-)

It's National Quilting Day and, of course, we are sewing!

We wanted to share a couple of free projects with you that we thought you might enjoy ...

First up, our Scrappy Cabins quilt pattern is really easy & beginner-friendly project that is GREAT for scraps.

You can download the pattern here.

Next, is the Moda Candy Spools Mini Quilt pattern. This one is a great project to showcase a favorite group of prints and all you need is a mini charm pack and a little yardage for the spool tops and then background. I think this would be a great opportunity to fussy cut some favorite, hoarded scraps as well!

I got started on this one with a few Starry Mini Charm squares and Hole Punch Dot for my spool tops. I am using Crossweave in Graphite for the background.

You can download this free pattern from Moda here and shop our kits here.

The Bloomberg Table Runner

The Bloomberg Table Runner (one of the latest pattern releases by from our sister company, Branch & Blume) is a new favorite around here. With signs of life starting to appear in the garden, we're getting really excited for the flowers that will be appearing soon.

The name for this one comes from a fellow bloom-loving, quilting friend, whose last name happens to be Bloomberg!

For the original/cover girl version of the pattern, I used Mix It Up for the petals and some yellows from Sundance with a Crossweave background in Graphite.

I wanted to play around with it and see how it would look in different colors. I had a suggestion on Instagram for pink (a no brainer!) and a black eyed susan version.

So, I grabbed a bundle of Midnight in the Garden and played around a bit with both.

Which one is your favorite?

Here's a quick video I posted on Instagram showing how I free motion quilted the flowers.

I think a quilt version of this one is next ... now to decide if all the flowers should be the same color or a variety. Here's a quick mock up I made of it in quilt form.

With the official start to Spring just a few short weeks away, I am ready for all the flowers to start blooming!

I put together a bundle of small scale florals in a rainbow of colors for the shop earlier this week.

Aren't they lovely? They also reminded me of a project I made several years ago and thought I would reshare it!

A sixteen patch is easy to sew with 2.5" strips and then a 2.5" wide sashing. A quilt like this is easy to scale to size for a baby shower gift or yourself!
Block Bazaar Sampler Block of the Month

We're really excited to introduce you to our next Block-of-the-Month (BOM) sampler quilt, the Block Bazaar Sampler!

This quilt is made up of 8" and 24" blocks and measures 72" x 88" when completed. As you can see there are lots of different blocks we will be making - all with rotary cutting and traditional piecing methods.

I have mocked up the quilt in several different color schemes to help show the versatility of this pattern - it really can suit any style or theme based on your fabric selections.

Here is a mock up of basics and small-scale prints from Ruby Star Society.

And another in red & green for Christmas.

And one more ... in a mix of red, white, and blue prints & colors.

Which one is your favorite?

Materials Needed:

You'll need approximately 12 yards of assorted prints to complete this quilt. (For reference, the red & green version would require approx 4 yards white, yards assorted red, and yards assorted green.)

In addition, you will need 5/8 yard binding and 5 yards backing (or 2.5 yd wide back).

Scrappy Celebration Quilt Along

We are big fans of American Patchwork & Quilting magazine and have been subscribed for several years. And our friend, Lissa Alexander (@modalissa), is this month's cover girl with another add-to-your-quilts-to-make-list scrappy quilt.

And even better, there is a sew along! You can learn more about the sew along at the APQ website here.

I couldn't resist pulling some prints inspired by the cover quilt. This bundle of 20 prints would be a great starter bundle for the sew along. Or even just a rainbow of pretty prints to add to your stash.

The sew along is starting later this month and continues into March. And even if you don't sew it with the sew along schedule, this is definitely a stash busting pattern worth saving!

Lissa is known for her scrappy patterns and mixing prints and low volumes backgrounds in her quilts. The new Mix It Up collection from Moda just came in and it goes pretty nicely with our Scrappy Celebration bundle.

Sidetracked Sampler Quilt Finish

Today I am sharing a quilt finish just back from the longarm quilter. I've been really excited about this Sidetracked Sampler for a few reasons ...

First, I drew this quilt several years ago and ... well, just got sidetracked! So actually bringing it to life was really fun.

Second, I went super scrappy with this quilt and I am so happy with how it turned out. :)

Have you ever made a sampler quilt? I have made a few of them in the past and here are a few reasons why I love them:

A sampler quilt lets you try out many different blocks. Sometimes making a large quilt of all the same blocks, I tend to lose steam and it ends up in the WIP pile.

Samplers can be made scrappy (like mine!) or in a more limited color palette or prints from all one designer. So you can really customize it to your taste.

Scrappy samplers are a fun opportunity to use up snippets of favorite prints you just couldn't toss! And the more different prints you use, the better they are! There is less to "match" when you're mixing all the things.

This sampler includes four different large star blocks measuring 18" - they could easily be converted to a pillow front! Several novelty blocks like a rainbow, house, and pineapple add a bit of whimsy and fun.

My quilt was expertly quilted by Katie's Quilting. I love how she trimmed it for me and then wrapped it up so pretty and even included some Color Catchers! A really nice touch. The Panto I requested is called "Soho" and it is one of my very favorites that looks good on everything.

If you've got scraps or want to make your own Sidetracked Sampler, the complete pattern is available! This was our 2022 featured Block-of-the-Month (BOM) and since it's 2023, all the pattern sheets and coloring pages are available immediately! Learn more and order the pattern and course access here.

This Heart Mini Trio comes together quick and easy thanks to Moda's precut mini charms!

You'll Need (kits while they last):

1 Mini Charm Pack (or thirty-five (35) 2.5" squares)

1/4 yard binding

1/4 yard backing

10 x 20 cotton batting

3" x 4" cardstock

4" x 8" WonderUnder

Step One:
Sort your fabric into four groups. In this sample, we used the First Crush Fabric by Sweetwater (no longer available), I sorted as follows:

Eight red squares for the hearts

Three sets of nine squares for the mini backgrounds

Step Two:

Next, sew together three nine-patches with your background squares. Press the seams of each row in opposite directions so they will nest when you join them.

Then, sew the red squares together in a rectangle (two rows of four). Press seams open.

Step Three:

Fold the 3" x 4" piece of cardstock in half (1.5" x 4") and use paper scissors to cut the shape of a heart.

Trace the cardstock heart onto paper side of the WonderUnder. Cut out the hearts leaving a little room around your lines. Then, following the manufacturer's directions, fuse the WonderUnder to the wrong side of your pieced hearts rectangle.

Cut out all three hearts. And carefully peel the paper off. Fuse to the nine patch units.

Step Four:

Using a coordinating thread, applique one heart to each of the three nine patch units. (I used a zig zag stitch. But you can use a blanket stitch or another decorative stitch.)

Step Five:

Layer the nine patch, batting and backing. Baste and quilt as desired. Repeat to make three mini quilts. I chose to outline quilt the hearts and then stitch 1/4" along the sides of each seam to make a grid of quilting in the background.

Step Six:

Cut three 2.25" x WOF strips from the binding fabric (one strip for each mini). Press in half lenthwise to created the binding strips. Attach binding and finish by hand or machine as desired.

If you do this by assembly line, you can make all three super quick! You could also join them together to create a small runner or pillow.

Hope you enjoyed this trip down memory lane for this sweet little tutorial! Find our favorite Valentine's patterns, fabrics and kits in the shop here.

With Valentine's Day coming up soon, I thought I would share a sweet pillow project with you all. I am calling it "Love Birds" and it uses a free quilt block!

I originally made a bird quilt a couple years ago as part of a group quilting project (see photo at the end of this post). And I fell in love with these quirky little birds. I have plans for a holiday bird quilt, but I thought it would be sweet for Valentine's Day, too.

You'll need to get the measurements for the block from the Block Lotto website here.

For this 12" x 24" rectangular pillow, you will need four birds. Two right-facing and two left-facing. Follow the directions for making the 6.5" x 9.5" bird blocks at the Block Lotto website.

I did take a few photos of my block parts as I was sewing up my pillow.

The bird body is pretty easy and there is a bit of improv so that makes them each slightly unique!

You'll add the 3.5" x 6.5" background rectangles to the top of the right-facing birds and the bottom of the left-facing birds so that they will be staggered a bit on the front of the pillow.

Add a 2" x 24.5" background to the top and bottom of the four joined blocks to make the pillow front. Quilt and finish with a zipper or envelope backing as desired.

If you're interested in a kit for this project, we have some available in the fabrics shown (from Country Rose by Lella Boutique). We used four pink F16, 1 brown F16, a half yard for background, and a half yard for the backing.

Kits are available here while supplies last.

As promised, here is the bird quilt that started my obsession with these little feathered friends.

Easy Quilted Gift Bags Tutorial

With the holidays quickly approaching, I always have a long list of people I would like to make a gift for. And I always seem to have a list longer than my time allows - yikes! But these quick drawstring bags are really fun and when you add a nice soap or bag of chocolates inside it's "semi-homemade!" :)

These bags were EXTRA quick because I started with preprinted blocks from a panel by Corey Yoder in her Beautiful Day line. I used a few coordinates in matching colors from other designers but with a simple color scheme that worked out really well. (See materials list linked at the end of this post.)

The preprinted blocks were cut at 8.5" square and then I sewed a 8.5" x 14.5" rectangle to the bottom to create the exterior of the bag.

I also cut (2) 2" x 7.5" strips for the casing pieces.

I adhered the exterior to fusible fleece (regular batting also works well!) and added some wavy lines of quilting.

I folded the short ends of the casing pieces under about 1/2" and then tucked the raw edge into the fold and top stitched closed. Then pressed them in half lengthwise.

Attach the casing strips by basting them to the two short edges of the exterior - centering them. I cut a lining 8.5" x 22.5" and placed it RST with the exterior/casing and sewed them together on the short ends. This makes a big loop.

To finish the bag, adjust the loop so the top seams match and the lining is RST and the exterior is RST. Sew along both long edges, leaving a 3" hole in the lining on one side for turning.

Box the seams by cutting a 1" square out of each bottom corner.

Turn the bag right side out and close up the seam in the lining.

Run twill or string of your choice and tie them off. Gift & enjoy!

If you don't have a panel, a fun novelty print would be a great option or a large motif that has been fussy cut. You can also make these in various sizes and make a stash of reusable gift bags to wrap gifts in each year as well!

Over the weekend, we were at a quilter's retreat with some friends (our "Sewing Sisters," if you will). It was a great to get away and have big blocks of time to chain piece some quilts together. I wanted to share a few of the holiday projects we made...

First up is the Quilty Trees quilt top. The pattern is from Quilty Love (available here) and I raided my bag of holiday-themed prints I had brought (and everyone else's fabrics too!) to cut enough green strips for the trees and assorted low volumes for the background.

Once all the strips and pieces were cut, this was a really easy quilt to piece. Very beginner friendly if you're new to quilting.

We put together a Holiday Forest bundle with a nice greens (and a brown for tree trunks) if you'd like a starter kit for a similar quilt.

After I finished the trees, I started on Happy Stripes, also from Quilty Love. This time, I went scrappy red & white (low volumes). I really love how this one turned out and was glad to have access to *just enough* black Essex linen for the accent to be able to get this one done while at the retreat.

We put together a "Peppermint Twist" bundle for a similar look, just in case you now have a need for a red & white holiday quilt. ;)

One of our friends who was sewing with us, made these gorgeous, reusable gift bags using the Cheer & Merriment panel and some coordinating yardage.

The Lined Drawstring Bag pattern by Jeni at In Color Order includes instructions for customizing the size - perfect for adjusting them to fit the panels. You can find kits for these bags here.

And Linda finished an advent calendar panel project from the Merrymaking collection, too!

As you can see, we put our machines to work this past weekend! We hope you're inspired to make a handmade holiday gift this season!

Happy sewing!

Neighbors Pillow Sew Along - Day 5 - Finishing

Hiya!

We are in the final stretch of our Neighbors Pillow Sew Along with some tips and photos for finishing your pillow up!

First things first, let's get your pillow front and back basted to some batting. I like to spray baste instead of use pins. Then I don't have to stop and remove pins when I am quilting. But use whatever basting method you prefer.

Then, quilt your pillow front and backing as desired. You can see that I selected some prints for the back that have a natural grid in their design, which made it really easy to quilt a grid pattern with no marking!

For the Halloween front, I made a spiderweb with lines of stitching, which I think turned out really fun!

For the Christmas version, I did a lot of outline quilting with some fun free motion in the sky, roofs, and trees.

Once your panels are quilted, you will trim them to size.

Then prepare the zipper by adding tabs and securing to the bottom edge just as you would a zipper in a pouch.

I do like to topstitch to help keep the seam allowance from getting caught in the zipper.

Then you'll join the front and back to finish up your pillow.

My favorite 12" x 24" pillow form is this one from Amazon.

Hi again!

We are getting really close to finishing up our Neighbors pillows! How is it going?

Today, I am going to share the steps for the trees and assembling the pillow front top so you can quilt it. Ready?

The trees use what I call a "stitch & flip" method to create the shape. You'll draw diagonal lines and sew just inside the line. Then press towards the corner and trim the seam allowance. I usually trim the completed rectangle to size after adding all the corner squares just so everything lines up nicer later.

You'll attach the "sky" strip above each house.

And then sew your houses together with the sky/trees on the left and right sides of the houses unit.

Finally, you'll add the sidewalk/street. Now you are all set!

We will see you tomorrow for the final post in the series and I will show you some quilting and zipper installation.

Happy sewing!

Neighbors Pillow Sew Along - Day 3 - Tall Houses

Hi again!

We're back for Day 3 of the Neighbors Pillow Sew Along and we're building our Tall Houses today!

These go together in a similar fashion as the short houses, but have more windows. Let's get started by gathering all of our building materials.

Make the 2nd floor window section (glue basting these smaller pieces is a huge help!) and the window section by the front door.

Additionally, you will piece the roof like a flying geese block, but its not a geese block, so don't panic when the sky triangles don't touch - this is supposed to be this way! ;)

Next, being adding the horizontal house siding strips to the bottom of the roof and windows section.

Finally, stitch the three sections together to complete the house.

My two spooky houses ... notice I made them mirror images again like I did with the short houses yesterday.

And here are the Christmas houses that I made using our kit.

Thanks for stopping by and sharing your blocks on Instagram, too! See you tomorrow when we will assemble the pillow front.

Neighbors Pillow Sew Along - Day 2 - Short Houses

Welcome back to the Neighbors Pillow Sew Along!

Today, we're making the "short houses." We got all of the "building materials" ready yesterday, so let's get sewing!

One tip I will share before we get into some step-by-step photos of assembling these little houses is that I like to glue baste my pieces. I use a glue tip from Pen + Paper Patterns and regular Elmer's Washable School glue. A little bit of glue along the edges of the fabric (within the seam allowance) is all you need to hold pieces together without pins. Add the glue, place the two fabrics RST and press with an iron to set the glue.

Ok ... so first things first ... lay out all your pieces.

Start by sewing the roof section, the door section, and the windows section.

Then add the side of the house to the windows section. And the top portion of the house to the door section.

Join the two sides of the house together.

And then sew on the roof! Easy peasy!

You'll notice that I made my houses mirror images of each other - the cutting is the same, I am just orienting the door on either the right or left side of the house to add some variety to the house blocks.

Hope these photos were helpful! We will see you back here tomorrow with the Tall Houses.

Welcome to the Neighbors Pillow Sew Along and thank you for your patience since we had to postpone this one week!

Today, we are cutting the pieces we need to build our houses. One thing I will share is that if you are cutting from a kit, you may want to layout your fabrics in stacks to help you plan - each of my stacks has a print for the roof, the siding, the windows, and the door.

Follow the directions in the pattern to cut the components you need from each fabric.

Once I cut all of my blocks, I like to clip the pieces for each house together to keep them organized for sewing. Here is a picture of the parts my Christmas version all clipped together for assembly.

If you are planning to fussy cut any windows or roof tops, this is the time! For the Santa on the rooftop in one of my blocks, I used a 2.5" square ruler to be sure that I had Santa lined up properly once I went to sew the flying geese block that makes up the roof.

Ok ... now, it's your turn to get cutting! I can't wait to see your neighborhoods come together! Tag us @sewlux with #neighborspillowsewalong on IG!

We will see you back here tomorrow to sew the Short Houses together.

We are excited to introduce our Neighbors Pillow Pattern with you - this was featured as our July club kit and it turned out so cute. We thought this would be a fun one to do a sew along with since the holidays are just around the corner.

This pillow measures 12" x 24" and the colors can easily be customized for a specific holiday (ex. Halloween, Christmas, 4th of July, etc) or using colors that complement your home decor.

Our Sew Along is pretty laid back, but here is the schedule if you would like to participate and sew along with us while we make some Halloween and Christmas versions.

Coming Soon: Scrappy Summer Cabins Sew Along!

Welcome to July, everyone!

We are so excited to kick off a sew along for one of our favorite finishes - these scrappy cabin blocks! I made this quilt with all the original collections from Ruby Star Society and it was fun and easy.

We will be sharing the directions as part of a FREE course and we hope you will join the fun. This is beginner friendly project and certainly improv-friendly, too. We tend to be a little more Type A around here, so we'll be sharing specific measurements for three different blocks for this quilt. ;)

So grab your scrap basket and get ready! Layer cakes, jelly roll strips and F8s are also great for this too. You can stick with a favorite designer, a holiday theme, or go crazy - scrappy quilts always shine when you go with a "the more, the merrier" approach!

To celebrate this fun project, we'll also be tucking in a FREE scrap bundle with every order of $50 or more (before tax & shipping, after discounts) in July. One per customer per day.

More details and the course will be available on July 5th! We can't wait to sew with you.

Happy Sewing!
