I’ve been decorating doors for over 5 years now. I have learned quite a few helpful tips and tricks along the way.

• Involve the Students: Letting students contribute is not only fun but also helps them feel more connected to the classroom environment. Try adding a “Thankful Tree” to the door where each student can write down something they’re grateful for on a paper leaf. Or have them design their own leaf. I always try to get the kids involved if I can!
• Plan a Theme: A clear theme, like “Harvest Festival,” “Fall in Love with Reading,” or “Autumn Adventures,” can make the decoration process simpler and more cohesive. Matching bulletin board borders or complementary designs inside the room add to the effect.
• Reuse and Recycle: Seasonal decorations can be reused year after year with some care. Try using templates and designs that can be easily refreshed or modified each fall, such as pumpkins that can be repainted or leaves that can be reattached.
• Adhesive: I like to use a mix of tape that can be folded over, double-sided tape, glue dots, hot glue, or even traditional glue depending on the size and weight of the items I’m adhering to the door. If I’m planning to reuse the items then I always try to use a tape that won’t damage the decoration once pulled off the door.
• Easy Clean-Up Tips: When the season ends, consider organizing a quick door cleanup session with the kids. It’s a good way to recycle parts that can be used again and to gently remove items without damaging the door’s surface.

Halloween is just around the corner, and what better way to celebrate this spook-tacular season than by combining the love of books with the joy of pumpkin decorating? My children’s school does a pumpkin book character contest every year. Each year they have well over 100 submissions. I have gathered a wide variety of crafts that kids of all ages can participate in. From hand prints that are perfect for toddlers (with assistance of course) to more intricate crafts that the older elementary school aged kids can participate in.

3 Turkey Craft Ideas

• Handprint Turkeys:
  • Materials: Construction paper, washable paint, googly eyes, glue
  • How-to: Have kids dip their hands in fall-colored paints and press them onto construction paper. Once dry, add googly eyes and a beak for a cute handprint turkey keepsake.
• Paper Plate Turkeys:
  • Materials: Paper plates, colored paper, markers, glue
  • How-to: Cut out feather shapes from colored paper and glue them around the edge of a paper plate. Add a face to the center, and you’ve got a simple yet charming turkey!
• Sock Turkey Puppets:
  • Materials: Old socks, googly eyes, felt, glue
