Hello Seward Neighbors and lovers of May Day!

I know many of you have been very active in May Day, including all of your artists, and those that have been real Food Justice and Compost Advocates, so I wanted to share this with you too!

I wanted to let you know that I rescheduled the May Day 2012 Food Justice and Compost Brainstorm for Friday, March 12th from 12-12. At this brainstorm, we will be coming up with ideas together on how to make ideas around food justice and compost interactive, and how to capture the energy of the day into something that encourages attendees to get more involved.

At May Day this year, there will be an Off the Grid section (where the soccer/baseball fields are). In this section, we hope to create a mini "Transition Town" with a town square and all. We will be hopefully offering skill sharing opportunities, riding weird bikes, and doing other fun things. We could build mosaics and other types of things that we could keep in our neighborhoods. There are lots of ideas that each of you hold in your heads that just explode when you get other folks in the room jabbering about how awesome this/ that might be. We hope to sit in a room with you, and let these happen, and then try to see whats feasible. This year these are happening around three main focus areas: Transportation, Energy, and Food.

Folks are brainstorming about each of these topics separately, and at some point soon (mid March) we will bring all of these ideas together to see what's feasible). In April we will have some build dates, to build puppets and other things that we can use to make our "Transition Town". These dates will be set shortly, and I will let you know all about them.

What to keep in mind:
*The Living Green Expo happens this same weekend. They've got their style down pat, and there's no need to mimic that! We want these ideas to be birthed out of the creativity, traditions, and style of what May Day is to each of us. That means lets leave the info tables in info alley, and find creative ways to share info with folks. Let's think outside of the box on how to engage our neighbors and neighborhoods. What can we really do to inspire ourselves and others to live in harmony with the world.
*How can we honor everyone who is doing this already! Many cultures, including those that live right here in community, do many activities that are already more sustainable than the American way of life. How can we honor those?
*Commons. Please feel free to share this email with friends, we want to be able to share ideas and thoughts widely.
*In the Heart of the Beast, has a GREEN TEAM, working on energy, food, and waste for the festival itself. We need many volunteers for each of these ventures. Spread this widely.

Redistricting and how it affects Seward
Feb 22 7PM at Matthews Park
On February 22 the Seward Neighborhood Group Board meeting will focus on redistricting and how it affects the Seward Neighborhood. Mike Dean, from Common Cause, will go over the various redistricting maps that are being presented and answer any questions. This meeting will be at Matthews Center in the all-purpose room. The board meeting will start at 7PM and the redistricting discussion will start after introductions. All are welcome.

SNG Makes Changes to Home Improvement Loan Programs

Income limits for the Revolving Loan Program and Interest Subsidy Grant Program have been raised from 80% of the metro median income to 115%. The current household income limit for the programs is now $96,500. SNG has also created a new Emergency Deferred Loan Program to assist homeowners in making emergency repairs when they don't have access to other funding.

The SNG Revolving Loan Program provides loans up to $12,000 to income eligible homeowners for exterior, energy, mechanical, electrical and code improvements at 3.99%. The Interest Subsidy Grant Program reduces the interest rate on Minnesota Fix-up Fund loans from 5.99% to 3.99% on loans up to $20,000 for up to 15 years. The Minnesota Fix-up Fund can be used for most types of home improvement projects including interior remodeling and additions.

The purpose of the Emergency Deferred Loan Program is to provide deferred loans to owner-occupants of properties in the Seward neighborhood who face emergency home repairs and are unable to obtain funds to repair the problem. Loans will be made to cover the cost of correcting the problem up to a maximum of $5,000. For homeowners unable to make monthly payments, the loans will be repaid when the house is sold.

Save the date(s) for the annual Seward Garage Sales and clean out your basements!!

“National Night In” Don’t wait until August to see all your neighbors!! They are still all there behind closed doors and cold cars. Join other Seward Block Clubs and have a “National Night In” party. Find someone willing to host and invite the neighbors for a potluck. If seating space is an issue, have your neighbors for coffee or tea and ask everyone to bring a treat. Sounds like a perfect Sunday afternoon event!

Thank you to everyone who made the Sweethearts and Spirits event a huge success! We raised almost $3000. A big thanks to Zipp’s for organizing the event and all the local donors who gave food and auction items.

Now it’s time for the 3^rd annual benefit concert co-sponsored by Faith Mennonite Church and Community of Saint Martin! Sunday, March 11, 2:00-4:00 pm, Faith Mennonite Church, 2720 E 22nd St. Minneapolis.Songsters and instrumentalists: Linda Breitag, Sophia Breitag, Chris Jones,Ray Makeever, Robin Nelson. Folk songs, songs of peace, roots music, Celtic fiddling, serious silliness, and YOU singing along.

It’s time for a winter quest! Bring the family out to Minnehaha Park where you will be able to hike, explore and follow the clues placed throughout the park to unlock its secrets and find a hidden treasure. It's a nature-based scavenger hunt in winter. After the quest is completed, stick around to spend some time in the park while enjoying some warm and delicious treats! Redistricting in Minneapolis

Over the next several weeks, you will have an opportunity to draw a new Minneapolis. The city of Minneapolis is beginning to redraw political boundaries, like ward and park board districts, to account for changes in the population throughout the city. Where these lines are drawn, can have a huge impact on how your community is represented in city hall. That is why we want to make sure your community’s voice is heard in how the city redistricting group draws the new lines. Speaking out on behalf of your community will help ensure that your community has an opportunity to have its voice heard in city hall. Unfortunately, the redistricting process has to be complete in a short period of time. But join us this weekend to learn how you redistricting works at the local level.

Home improvement talks

“Home Improvement: Found Space” is a talk offered at Nokomis Library, 5100 34^th Ave. S., Tuesday, Feb. 21 at 6:30 p.m. South Minneapolis homeowners who would like more usable space from a home without expanding its footprint can see how a designer does it. “Before and after case histories will amaze you and start you thinking about the hidden potential of your home,” said Fred Peters of F&P Remodeling by Design, seminar presenter.

March 6, 6:30 p.m., Bob Buck of Buck Brothers Construction will present “When should I contact a contractor?” at the East Lake library, 2727 East Lake Street, for homeowners who want to make changes but are not sure where to begin, or those thinking of tackling a DIY project. Auditions for Theatre Production of “It’s a Wonderful Life”
The Holy Trinity Theatre Circle's spring production will be an adaptation of the timeless Frank Capra film, "It's a Wonderful Life!" Come join Holy Trinity as they travel to Bedford Falls and into the lives of George and Mary Bailey and their family and friends and watch how George's life has such a positive impact on everyone he meets. Be a part of George's struggles with the evil Mr. Potter, and marvel as Clarence the Angel helps George to understand that George really HAS had a "wonderful life!" As in the classic movie, there are many characters to bring to life–people of ALL AGES are needed for the parts, children, young adults, older adults--everyone. They will be holding AUDITIONS on Saturday morning, February 25 starting at 10 am, and Sunday afternoon, February 26 starting at 12:30 pm, in the first floor Bartsch Room (please come to east entrance). NO PREPARATION OR PAST EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY! Auditions will consist of readings from the script.

Community Building Committee Meeting-Feb 21 7PM

We are looking for volunteers for two Spring/Summer events.

1. Late April “Seward day at the dog park”. This will be a first ever Seward community event at the dog park. No permit required.

2. Community Potluck and Scavenger Hunt—June 16^th. Help us create a scavenger hunt that will include all ages.

If you are interested in either of these events come to our planning meeting on February 21^st, 7PM. The meeting will be held at 2901 E. 22^nd St., the home of Kerry Cashman and Bill Barnett. Note the available tour of a house that Seward Redesign bought and is in the process of fixing up. This is a house that was a perennial problem and deteriorated for many years and is now just beginning renovation. See note below.

The next tour to see progress will be on April 2 at the same time. The tour today will give people a baseline for comparison.

Please recall that we acquired this property and conveyed it to Brownsmith Restoration for renovations. There will be a tour of 904-30th Avenue this afternoon starting at 5:00 p.m. this afternoon before our board meeting. I want you to be able to see the condition of this house before they start putting it back together. The debris has been cleared out and you will be able to look in the front and back door as well as get a good view of the exterior. The interior is too unstable to have you go inside.

I will be stopping by as well. When I last saw it, the entire house was filled with trash and debris.

We hope to do another tour before our next board meeting at the beginning of April.

MPD 3^rd PCT Highlights

With the help of the Max-it-Pawn Shop staff at 27^th & E. Lake 3^rd PCT Property Crimes Unit and responding officers were able to arrest a suspected male for attempting to pawn an autographed jersey valued at $2000 that had been reported stolen from a downtown business in December 2011. Case is still pending charges so no further information at this time.

Two Fun Events to Support Restorative Justice

Wine, Beer & Liquor tasting—Saturday, Feb 11 from 6:30 – 9PM

Zipps Liquors will be hosting a Wine, Beer and Liquor tasting on Saturday, February 11 from 6:30-9:00 to benefit Seward Longfellow Restorative Justice Partnership. Tickets are $20 individually or $30 if you buy two. The event will be at the Minneapolis Eagles Club (2507 E. 25th Street). Tickets are available from SLRJP, Zipps, or at the door.

Mark your calendars for benefit concert for SLRJP in March. Faith Mennonite church and Community of St. Martin will co-host a concert on Sunday, March 11 from 2:00-4:00pm with singer-songwriters, folks musicians and blue grass by performers including Ray Makeever, Linda and Sophia Breitag, Robin Nelson and Chris Jones. The concert is free and donations to SLRJP will be gratefully received at the concert.

Playwrights’ Center reading “The Few” by Samuel D. Hunter Monday Feb 6 at 7PM

This Monday, Feb. 6 at 7 pm, the Playwrights' Center will be presenting its latest free staged reading, *The Few* by Samuel D. Hunter. If you haven't had a chance to check out one of our Ruth Easton readings, you won’t be disappointed. The event is casual, there are free snacks and drinks provided, and there's a discussion with the playwright afterwards. Samuel D. Hunter is a rapidly rising star in the world of playwriting -- his play *A Bright New Boise *just had an extended run at Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company in Washington, D.C. and *The Whale *premiered to rave reviews at Denver Center Theatre earlier in January.

Midtown Greenway WINTER WONDER WALK/RIDE February 11^th 2012 12 – 2PM:

A wintertime extravaganza on the Midtown Greenway.

The Midtown Greenway has become a backbone of bicycle transit and recreation in south Minneapolis—and not just in summertime. Whether you’re a walker, an experienced year-round biker, or a fair-weather cyclist just itching to get back out on the trails, come to the first-ever Winter Wonder Walk/Ride on February 11^th to see just how fun winter on the Greenway can be! From 12 pm. to 2 p.m., the Midtown Greenway will teem with activity: a fat tire bike obstacle course courtesy of Freewheel, Nice Ride MN’s slow-bike races, tricycle trains, three-legged snowshoe races, bike tubing, and more. We’ll have snacks and hot drinks to keep you going; you can even enjoy a s’more made with a marshmallow-toasting bicycle.

Fourth Annual Pancake Breakfast and Bake Sale

Auditions for Theatre Production of “It’s a Wonderful Life”
The Holy Trinity Theatre Circle's spring production will be an adaptation of the timeless Frank Capra film, "It's a Wonderful Life!" Come join Holy Trinity as they travel to Bedford Falls and into the lives of George and Mary Bailey and their family and friends and watch how George's life has such a positive impact on everyone he meets. Be a part of George's struggles with the evil Mr. Potter, and marvel as Clarence the Angel helps George to understand that George really HAS had a "wonderful life!" As in the classic movie, there are many characters to bring to life–people of ALL AGES are needed for the parts, children, young adults, older adults--everyone. They will be holding AUDITIONS on Saturday morning, February 25 starting at 10 am, and Sunday afternoon, February 26 starting at 12:30 pm, in the first floor Bartsch Room (please come to east entrance). NO PREPARATION OR PAST EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY! Auditions will consist of readings from the script.

From MPD: Thefts Of Copper and Parts from Air conditioning units

Thefts of Copper from HVAC Units

Since mid-November of 2011, there have been eleven reported incidents of thefts from businesses.

The suspect(s) damaged and stole copper from air conditioning units. In most cases they accessed the roof of the building to commit the crimes.

Most of the thefts occurred between 10 PM and 6 AM.

Ten occurred in the Ventura Village, Phillips West and Midtown neighborhoods. One occurred on 36^th and Hiawatha.

In Response to the Death Near the River in Seward Neighborhood - St. Stephen's Street Outreach team is on call to address public concerns around homelessness

One of our Seward Community Forum members recently found the body of a shirtless/hatless/gloveless frozen native man near the Franklin Terrace dog park. She posted about it to the Forum and started a great discussion. Part of the discussion centered on who to call if you see at-risk individuals out in the cold. Robin Garwood, policy aide for Councilmember Cam Gordon, posted about the St. Stephen's Street Outreach team and today Monica Nilsson, director of Street Outreach and Community Engagement at St. Stephen's Human Services, chimed in. I wanted to get this on the Profile for wider distribution especially since Monica and the team are available for presentations. (Sounds like a good topic for either the Seward Neighborhood Group or the Seward Civic & Commerce Association.) Her post is below. You can donate to St. Stephen's via GiveMN.org.

St Stephens Human Services available to address public concerns around homelessness

St Stephens Human Services operates a Street Outreach team available to address public concerns around homelessness. This team of 6 staff and 4 volunteers operates from 9am-5pm Monday through Friday with support from the City of Minneapolis, the Downtown Improvement District, State Dept of Public Safety and community support. The team works in cooperation with the Mpls Police Dept and is part of the downtown Radiolink system of communication with businesses and residents.

The team was created 4 years ago as part of Heading Home Hennepin, our community's plan to end people's homelessness. The team has two charges: to work with those who are causing concern in public while homeless and to work with those who are unsheltered, spending time outside or in public settings without access to advocacy. The team is able to respond to citizen calls or messages left at 612.879.7624. Should someone encounter an individual in a non-emergency situation, citizens may call the team and the team will respond based on availability. It is important for messages to be left, though, even in off-hours. The homeless individual may frequent a spot and the team very often can find the individual at the next opportunity.

The goal of the Street Outreach team is to improve the homeless individual's life situation, most likely with housing, sometimes assisting the person to a treatment setting for chemical or mental health care. Individuals interested in learning more about the team or having a presentation on its work are invited to call Monica Nilsson, Director of Street Outreach and Community Engagement at 612.481.9501.

Second Annual Sweethearts and Spirits: Beer, Liquor and Wine tasting hosted by Zipp’s Liquor!

All proceeds to benefit Seward Longfellow Restorative Justice Partnership.

Since 2004, SLRJP has provided an alternative to juvenile court for youth committing misdemeanor offenses in Seward and Greater Longfellow. SLRJP works with the youth, their parents and community members to explore how the youth’s actions caused harm and to develop with the youth a contract to repair the harm.

We will gather for lunch in the meeting room at United Noodles.
