On such occasions the whole Sikh families of a particular place gather in a gurudwara. It is properly decorated and illuminated. The Granth is read constantly. Hymns are sung in chorus or by professional Sikh singers. Prayer is said. Sweet pudding (karah prasad) is distributed in the whole congregation. In hot weather sweetened and iced water is served at various places. Houses are lighted in the evening. A free langar at the main gurudwara is a must for every fair and festival. As the congregations gather in thousands, the festival is usually converted into a fair. Innumerable shops, stalls, recreation centers spring up everywhere for the shopping and entertainments of visitors.

How can meters of cloth enhance the sensuality of a woman? Well, it can and this magic cloth is called “Saree.”

This ancient style of draping an unstitched material is the national garment of the Indian woman. It is simple, unique and designed to cover her modesty. The custom of wearing saree is five thousand years old and is mentioned in the scriptures dating back to 3000 BC.

Saree can be draped in ten to fifteen styles, with pleats and without it. The length of the material can range from five to nine meters. Each state of India has its own style of draping which is easily identifiable, translating the origin of the woman.

The saree is worn with a blouse and petticoat. The length of the blouse varies depending on trends but traditionally it ends well above the waistline. The blouse is usually short sleeved with a round or v-neckline. The petticoat holds the saree and makes it easier to tuck in the pleats.

Choosing the color of the petticoat is essential as it affects the overall presentation. Its color should match the saree or at least should be a shade closer. The saree worn in the state of Maharashtra and northern parts of Karnataka are without petticoat and have a different combination of pleats and gathers that holds the saree firmly. Here the length of the saree is nine yards.

Anjali told us about this photo that it was taken when she was going visiting Austrian landmarks. She visited Schönbrunn Palace, a royal residence in Austia, Veinna.

Being a historian Anjali loves to talk about history, she doesn’t get bored when talking about this topic. Anjali told about Schonbrunn palace that in the year 1569, Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian II purchased a large floodplain of the Wien River beneath a hill, situated between Meidling and Hietzing, where a former owner, in 1548, had erected a mansion called Katterburg. The emperor ordered the area to be fenced and put game there such as pheasants, ducks, deer and boar, in order to serve as the court’s recreational hunting ground. In a small separate part of the area, “exotic” birds like turkeys and peafowl were kept. Fishponds were built, too.

The name Schönbrunn (meaning “beautiful well”) has its roots in an artesian well from which the court consumed water.

During the next century, the area was used as a hunting and recreation ground. Especially Eleonore Gonzaga, who loved hunting, spent much time there and was bequeathed the area as her widow’s residence after the death of her husband, Ferdinand II. From 1638 to 1643, she added a palace to the Katterburg mansion, while in 1642 came the first mention of the name “Schönbrunn” on an invoice. The origins of the Schönbrunn orangery seem to go back to Eleonore Gonzaga as well. In the Turkish siege of 1683, the buildings were destroyed, and never restored.
