Steve Quick Gold and Diamond Christmas Tree

Steve Quick Jeweler becomes the latest company to create a diamond Christmas tree. The Quick tree is made of five pounds of solid 18K gold (which is reclaimed gold) with diamond-briolette ornaments and a layer of 200 carats of diamonds that form a glittering dusting of snow. The tree is topped with a 4.52 carat stone set in a platinum star. Steve Quick Jewelers estimates the tree at being valued over $500,000. The tree is being unveiled at the Steve Quick store in Chicago on December 7th and will be on display in the store throughout the season. Starting on December 17th the tree will be auctioned off on eBay with 100% of the profits going to the American Cancer Society.

If the tree is too expensive for your budget you could pick up mini versions of the tree in sterling silver or gold-plated for $25 or in 14K gold for $195.

Big and blingy seem to be the perfect description for the new Baume & Mercier Riviera XXL Jump Hour. The watch has a 43mm white gold dodecogonal case packed with 400 diamonds (mostly brilliant cut except for the baguettes around the crown). That's 9.5 carats of diamonds total. The movement is the automatic Dubois Depraz caliber 14400 with Cotes de Geneva decoration on the rotor. This luxury watches is water resistant but I can't imagine getting this one wet especially since the strap is white alligator.

Fortune Magazine examines the rise of Hearts on Fire as a rapidly rising diamond brand. The brand, which sells their stones for as much as 15% to 20% more than a comparable stone from Tiffany (and Tiffany itself packs quite a premium) has steadily earned a greater and greater reputation with consumers. The stones are "ideal cut" a method designed by Marcel Tolkowsky to deliver the most brilliance and fire. The Hearts on Fire stones have a hearts and arrows patter in the cut. If you look at the stone through the bottom using a jeweler's loupe you see eight hearts. From the top you see eights bursts of fire.

Some diamond dealers says that the Hearts on Fire brand is just another ideal-cut diamond and that the hype is mainly marketing. Marketing that was turned up recently with the new ad campaign that says that a Hearts on Fire stone is "Monogamy to the 100th power." Not as catchy as "a diamond is forever" the phrase used by De Beers which helped enshrine the diamond as the stone that stands for love and commitment. The new slogan also may not be as helpful in showing of Hearts on Fire's growing range of products including right hand rings, bracelets and earrings.

Hearts on Fire is far from being the only branded stone. Kay Jewelers for example, sells the Leo diamond. But devotees of the Hearts of Fire diamond seem most convinced of its superior qualities, in specific its ability to produce brilliant flashes of color. Earlier this year, Diamond Vues was host to a spirited debate on the subject. What seems to be most important to consumers, especially those who are unsure about the diamond world, is the idea of perceived worth Just as TIffany made the robin's egg blue box have immediate value for the consumer, Hearts on Fire has managed to convince buyers that their diamonds are worth more than nameless stones.

What Is The Future Of Diamond Buying?

Forbes has an interesting piece on the rise of Blue Nile, the popular internet diamond retailer. The diamond dealers, which made headlines when the sold a single diamond for $1.5 million earlier this year, has been a hit with male buyers seeking to avoid the hard sell and intimidation that can be found at some jewelry retail stores. One of the major appeals of the website is its user-friendly geek factor. You can read up on diamonds and what to look for and play around with the sliders, choosing cut, size, color and clarity watching the numbers rise and fall as you adjust the factors at different rates. It's a pretty engaging (pardon the pun) experience.

What the Forbes article doesn't mention is that that the folks at Blue Nile often don't actually see the stone. The rings are typically less expensive than traditional bricks-and-mortar stores which have a much higher overhead. Blue Nile has a network of dealers that work through a web-based diamond exchange. The stones are often shipped directly from these dealers without being inspected by Blue Nile. Most of the time this is not a problem but Judah Gutwein of Excel Diamonds writing for Diamond Vues profiled some of the potential risks of this situation describing a situation in which a customer did not receive the diamonds she had ordered. Buying through a middleman such as Blue Nile can lead to a more circuitous route of recovery when there are problems, although as far as I know, reports of such troubles are relatively small.

The future of the diamond industry does appear t o be a more open and honest one. I have been watching the moves of diamond man Martin Rapaport. He recently held his first of a monthly internet auction of stones. His goal is to bring open pricing to the diamond market and he has been working to create both a futures exchange and a fair trade system for diamonds. The future of diamond buying looks a lot more transparent and less shrouded in secrecy and mystery than it has been in the past.

"The Salvatore "Sammy Bull" Gravano's jewelry, which is being auctioned off on November 3 by Sierra Auctions in Phoenix, looks exactly like what you might expect an infamous mafia man's jewels might look like. The collection is heavy on the diamond pinky rings and gold watches with a wide variety of personalized gold and diamonds for both Sam and his wife Debbie. The money collected from the auction will go into the federal racketeering program to fund other investigations. Gravano was the man who squealed on John Gotti and entered the witness protection program but was later caught in a drug bust. The NY Post reports that the pieces were collected at a police raid of Gravano's home. The jewelry is expected to fetch at least $100,000 not because of the pieces themselves but because they were Gravano's.

Sometimes guys want a little bling too, you know? But it's hard to find that right balance of flash and masculinity, and although I'm not claiming this Pavé Diamond Dog Tag by David Yurman does the trick (it's all about personal preference and I'm not even a guy) the mix of pave diamonds and dog tag style seems to at least be in the right ballpark.
