The most successful British girl-group in pop history, Bananarama formed in London in late 1981. Drawing equal inspiration for their name from the childrens television program The Banana Splits and the Roxy Music song Pyjamarama, the trio comprised lifelong friends Keren Woodward and Sarah Dallin along with Siobhan Fahey, whom Dallin befriended at the London College of Fashion. After getting their start singing at friends parties and at nightclubs (where they performed accompanied by backing tapes * none of the women played their own instruments), they came to the attention of ex-Sex Pistols drummer Paul Cook, who produced Bananaramas first single, a cover of Swahili Black Bloods Aie A Mwana. After the group backed Fun Boy Three on the single It Aint What You Do, Its the Way You Do It, the Three returned the favor for 1982s He Was Really Sayin Somethin, a cover of the 1965 Velvelettes song that was the first of Bananaramas 26 U.K. chart smashes. While their initial hits, including Shy Boy, Na Na Hey Hey (Kiss Him Goodbye) and Cruel Summer (their first U.S. smash) were roundly dismissed as fluffy pop fare, the success of 1984s rape-themed release Robert DeNiro's Waiting convinced the group to tackle more serious topics; however, the follow-up single, Rough Justice * a song protesting political tensions in Northern Ireland * bombed, and the trios career stalled. In 1986, Bananaramas fortunes improved considerably when they joined forces with the production team of Stock, Aitken & Waterman, who produced the album Wow!; the groups most successful outing to date, the LPs cover of the Shocking Blues Venus was an international chart-topper, and both Love in the First Degree and I Heard a Rumour were major hits as well. KC and the SUNSHINE BAND Interview MADPOD

The Bee Gees may have been the undisputed disco kings of the late '70s,
but KC & the Sunshine Band weren't far behind. From the mid- to late
'70s, the multi-member and racially integrated group led by bandleaders
Harry Wayne "KC" Casey and Richard Finch racked up some of the era's
biggest and instantly recognizable dance hits. Casey and Finch first
met in 1972 while both were employed by TK Records in Miami, FL, where
among other chores, Casey served as a personal secretary and booking
agent for artist Timmy Thomas. KC & the Sunshine Band officially formed
in 1973, but a debut single, "Blow Your Whistle," sunk from sight upon
release. But it was another Casey/Finch original, "Rock Your Baby,"
that R&B artist George McCrae scored a hit with in 1974 as KC & the
Sunshine Band began issuing further albums and singles, quickly scoring
big hits on their own. The group then began an impressive run of disco
hits: 1977's "Shake Shake Shake (Shake Your Booty)," "I'm Your
Boogieman," "Keep It Comin' Love," "Boogie Shoes" (the latter included
on the monster-selling soundtrack to the hit John Travolta disco movie,
Saturday Night Fever), 1979's "Do You Wanna Go Party," and 1980's
"Please Don't Go." Despite earning nine Grammy nominations (receiving
three awards) and selling millions of records, KC & the Sunshine Band
weren't susceptible to the backlash that disco bands felt by the dawn of
the '80s, eventually leading to dwindling sales and the group's split by
the early '80s (although KC scored a moderate solo hit in 1983 with
"Give It Up"). Come the '90s, an appreciation of everything '70s swept
across the U.S., which led to a renewed interest bands from the era,
prompting KC & the Sunshine Band to re-form for concert performances.
That decade saw the release of countless KC "hits" collections and even
an episode of VH1's popular Behind the Music series that studied the
group's ups and downs. Harry joins Shadoe from his home in Hialeah
Florida.

After spending several years as the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist for the mid-'70s hard rock band Montrose, Sammy Hagar began a solo career that produced several hits and made him an album rock favorite. Hagar became a true star once he joined Van Halen in 1985, but he was a popular hard rocker ever since his first album with Montrose.

After giving up a boxing career, Hagar began singing in the late '60s, performing with various California bands including Skinny, the Fabulous Catillas, Justice Brothers, and Dust Cloud. During this time, he built up a solid reputation in the Californian hard rock scene. Former Edgar Winter guitarist Ronnie Montrose asked Hagar to join his band, Montrose, in 1973. Hagar recorded two albums with Montrose before going solo in 1976, taking the group's bassist, Bill Church. Montrose's drummer Denny Carmassi later joined Hagar's band, along with keyboardist Geoff Workman. Hagar's self-titled Sammy Hagar was his first chart entry; it eventually went gold. In 1979, he created a new supporting band featuring Workman, Church, guitarist Gary Pihl, and drummer Chuck Ruff. This lineup played on Hagar's most popular solo album, 1981's platinum Standing Hampton, plus 1982's gold Three Lock Box with only one member missing * drummer Ruff was replaced by David Lauser. After Three Lock Box and its number 13 hit single "Your Love Is Driving Me Crazy," Hagar played several shows with guitarist Neal Schon, bassist Kenny Aaronson, and drummer Mike Shrieve; the group recorded a live album under the name HSAS, as well as a studio version of Procol Harum's "A Whiter Shade of Pale." His 1984 album VOA contained the hit single "I Can't Drive 55," which peaked at number 26. In 1985, Hagar replaced David Lee Roth in Van Halen; his first album with the group was 1986's 5150. Hagar released his last solo album, Sammy Hagar, in 1987; the title of the record was changed to I Never Said Goodbye in an MTV contest, but no copies of the record were ever issued with that name. There are few bands in the annals of rock music as star-crossed in their history as Badfinger. Pegged as one of the most promising British groups of the late '60s and the one world-class talent ever signed to the Beatles' Apple Records label that remained with the label, Badfinger enjoyed the kind of success in England and America that most other bands could only envy. Yet a string of memorable hit singles * "Come and Get It," "No Matter What," "Day After Day," and "Baby Blue" * saw almost no reward from that success. Instead, four years of hit singles and international tours precipitated the suicides of its two creative members and legal proceedings that left lawyers as the only ones enriched by the group's work. Legend and only living member Joey Molland joins Shadoe exclusively from his home near Minneapolis.

The million-selling "Snoopy Vs. the Red Baron" = was the first and most successful of these novelty records in the fall of = 1966, and its follow-up, "The Return of the Red Baron," also made the Top = 40."Snoopy's Christmas" topped the seasonal charts at the end of = 1967, and surfaced as a recurrent to date! After a few = non-Snoopy singles, the Guardsmen released "Snoopy for President" in = the summer of 1968 at the height of the Nixon/Goldwater era. The= group scored a final Top 40 hit with its two-year-old, reissued debut = single, "Baby Let's Wait," in the winter of 1968-1969. The original = group split in 1969; a version with some replacement members continued for = another year. Barry and his wife Sheryl have two children living at home and are = members of the Chapel Hill Baptist Church where they are very involved in = the ministry of helps, and he of course also in singing. Barry also = has three children living in Florida, one living in Missouri, and one = living in Tennessee. Sheryl manages the Winslow Ministry office and = totally supports his music. years before changing their name to Glass Tiger and signing with Capitol.

After 1988's Diamond Sun, drummerMichael Hanson quit,
leaving guitarist Al Connelly, vocalist Alan Frew, bassist Wayne
Parker and keyboard player SamReid. Released in 1991,
Simple Mission was Glass Tiger's
last album except for Best of the Best (1993). Founding member and
lead vocalist Alan Frew joins Shadoe Steele via telephone from his
home-studio in Toronto.

Jack Blades Interview Madpod In addition to fronting one of the mid 80's most successful mainstream/arena rock bands, Night Ranger, bassist/singer Jack Blades has either recorded with, penned songs for, or produced albums for some of rock's biggest names. Originally hailing from Palm Springs, California, Blades joined countless local bands in the Southern California area during the early '70s, during which time he attended San Diego State University (as a pre-med student). By the latter part of the decade, Blades had relocated to San Francisco, where he joined the dance-rock group Rubicon. The band issued a pair of obscure releases, 1978's self-titled debut and 1980's American Dreams, before splitting up. Blades and Rubicon guitarist Brad Gillis decided to form a new band together, one that would be more aligned to hard rock than their previous outfit. The early '80s saw the formation of Night Ranger, along with members Alan Fitzgerald (keyboards), Jeff Watson (guitar), and Kelly Keagy (drums, vocals), who fit in perfectly with such then-thriving melodic rockers as Journey, Loverboy, and Van Halen. It didn't take long for Blades to re-appear in another similarly styled band however, the all-star Damn Yankees, which consisted of Tommy Shaw, Ted Nugent, and Michael Cartellone. Prolific vocalist and songwriter Chuck Negron grew up in the Bronx in the 1950s, pursuing his talents in basketball -- for which he was recruited by colleges nationwide -- and singing, which he explored with his doo wop group the Rondells. After playing basketball for

Santa Maria, CA's Hancock College and California State University in Los Angeles, Negron was ready to pursue his musical career. He remained in Los Angeles, eventually connecting with fellow singers Cory Wells and Danny Hutton and forming the legendary Three Dog Night in 1968. They met with massive success, scoring 18 consecutive Top 20 singles, including number ones like "Mama Told Me Not to Come," "Joy to the World," and "Black and White." With success came the trappings of the rock & roll lifestyle, which for Negron focused on drugs: by the time Three Dog Night split in 1977, he had a 2,000-dollar-a-day habit.
Remaining in the grip of addiction for almost two decades, Negron wasted away to 126 pounds and attempted 36 rehab programs unsuccessfully. His stay at the Cri-Help center, however, found him truly rehabilitated and ready to perform again -- with an extra octave added to his vocal range. Negron restarted his career by opening for Howie Mandel's 1994 Atlantic City show, and the following year he released his debut album, Am I Still in Your Heart. Negron now divides his time between raising his family, performing, lecturing, and working with anti-drug organizations like Musicians Assistance Program (MAP), MusiCares, and Cri-Help. 1999 saw the release of his multi-million selling biography, "Three Dog Nightmare", and his second album, Long Road Back, the book's musical counterpart. In his first one-on-one radio chat since 1988, Chuck speaks to Shadoe Steele on the roller-coaster ride of his life!

Kiki Dee kicked around Britain as a white soul singer for the better part of the late '60s and early '70s -- becoming the first British Caucasian signed to Motown -- before hooking up with Elton John, who signed her to his Rocket Records label and produced her first notable hit, "I've Got the Music in Me." In 1976, at which time John was the biggest pop star in the world, he wrote and duetted with Dee on the single "Don't Go Breaking My Heart," which promptly topped the charts all over the world. It did not, however, make Dee a long-term star, though she scored a couple of subsequent hits in England and turned to the stage with some success, especially by starring in Blood Brothers in the West End. In 1993, she and John recorded another duet, on Cole Porter's "True Love" (previously recorded as a duet by Bing Crosby and Grace Kelly). In a rare interview with Shadoe Steele and her husband Carmelo Luggeri from their home in London, Kiki talks about the old days with Elton John and a look ahead with her new live-in producer.

It's true that Manilow's taste for swelling choruses and lush arrangements often bordered on bombastic, but unlike many of his MOR peers, Manilow wasn't aiming to make smooth, restrained background music -- he conceived of himself as a pop entertainer and all-around showman in the classic mold, and his performances and stage shows were accordingly theatrical. Manilow dominated pop music during the latter half of the '70s like few other performers, spinning off a long series of hit singles (including 13 number-one hits on the adult contemporary charts) and platinum albums that essentially made the Arista label. The well began to run dry by the early '80s; no longer a superstar expected to deliver blockbuster hits, Manilow was free to explore his long-held taste for swing, pop standards, and Broadway show tunes, which dominated his albums from the mid-'80s on. He has continued to record steadily, and his popularity never completely eroded, as evidenced by the number three chart debut of his 2002 greatest-hits package, Ultimate Manilow. Spanish spitfire Charo is instantly recognizable with her big blonde hair, her tight and flamboyant clothes that leave little of her voluptuous figure to the imagination and most of

all for her jubilant, jiggling "coochie, coochie" (an interjection which Charo, with a laugh, admits has no real meaning) spoken with a thick Castilian accent. Though her image is that of the consummate bimbo, there is much more to Charo than meets the eye. She is a gifted comedienne who prides herself on putting on shows suitable for families and is also a very talented Spanish guitarist and singer. Although she professionally mangles the English language on stage, she can read and write it fluently; Charo is also fluent in Japanese, French, and Spanish. As a young girl, she studied guitar under Andres Segovia, one of the fathers of modern classical guitar music. She came to the US in the '70s and married the much older Spanish band leader Xavier Cugat. A regular on television talk shows of the era, she appeared frequently in nightclubs and occasionally as a television actress in shows such as Fantasy Island. She has gained most of her renown on the nightclub circuit touring such hotspots as Las Vegas and Atlantic City, but after the birth of her son in the early '80s she and her new husband moved to Hawaii. Though she has focused more on raising her child over the last decade, Charo continues to perform regularly at the Honolulu resort, the Polynesian Palace. She also tours the mainland occasionally. In 1994, she released her first Latino album Guitar Passion, an album on which she played and sang flamenco-style pop songs on her guitar. Though it didn't do well receive much radio airplay, it has stayed on the Billboard Top 50 album charts for four months. In 1996, she released an album of Tropical dance tunes titled Cuchi-Cuchi Fever. In a rare one-on-one, Charo speaks to Shadoe Steele from her 2nd home in Pacific Palisades California. Nick Gilder began playing with Vancouver-based Sweeney Todd. The band split in 1977 after two albums. (Sweeney Todd and If Wishes Were Horses) when he and bandmate Jimmy McCullouch moved to Los Angeles. That same year, Gilder began a solo career, signing to Chrysalis and releasing You Know Who You Are. His second album, City Nights, produced the platinum number one single "Hot Child in the City" in 1978. Though Gilder released several other albums (including 1979's Frequency and 1981's Body Talk Muzak), he never approached his earlier success. Nick speaks to Shadoe Steele from his home recording studio in his first radio interview with the United States since 1992.

In 1983 After The Fire scored a U.S. Top Ten hit with "Der Kommissar." Peter "Memory" Banks joins Shadoe Steele live from the UK with a plethora of great stories and musical memories of the band's early days right up through some interesting current projects. After the Fire was originally formed in England in 1974 by master keyboard player Peter Banks.
The lineup disbanded a few years later, upon which point Banks re-formed the band with guitarist Andy Piercy, bass player Nick Battle, and drummer Ivor Twiddell. The new lineup played the London music scene and eventually became a favorite at the Marquee on London's Wardour Street. In 1978, the band cut their first album, "Signs of Change", on their own Rapid label. Their musical style at the time sounded like early Genesis and Greenslade. After increasing popularity, the band signed to CBS to record their second album, "Laser Love", which marked a change in direction influenced by the recent emergence of new wave. Battle left and was replaced by guitarist John Russell, who was previously in Narnia with Banks. Peter Banks changed his name to "Memory" Banks to avoid confusion with the ex-Yes guitarist with the same name, while Piercy switched to bass. The single "One Rule for You," produced by Rupert Hine, went U.K. Top 40. The band's third album, 80F, was less successful. Twiddell was later replaced by Peter King (ex-Flys). 1981's "Batteries Not Included" was a more commercial effort, but grand-scale success eluded the band until 1983 when they scored a U.S. Top Ten hit with "Der Kommissar.

One of the flashiest guitarists (both visually and instrumentally) to emerge from the '80s rock scene was Steve Stevens. Born in Brooklyn, New York, on May 5, 1959,

Stevens first picked up the guitar when he was only seven years old, and later became an avid prog rock fan, especially the likes of Emerson, Lake & Palmer and Yes. Honing his craft while playing in Manhattan, Stevens recorded an unreleased album with his band, Fine Maribus, and also played as a session guitarist on Peter Criss' best forgotten second post-Kiss solo outing, 1982's Let Me Rock You (although Stevens did earn a songwriting credit for the track "First Day in the Rain"). It was also during the early '80s that Stevens hooked up with ex-Generation X singer Billy Idol, who had relocated to New York in hopes of launching a solo career. Idol found the perfect foil in Stevens, and with ex-Kiss manager Bill Aucoin backing them, Stevens' shredding guitar licks (and outrageous glam rock looks). It took an extended period for Idol and Stevens to offer a third album, 1986's Whiplash Smile, and although it was another big hit, Stevens longed to launch his own solo career, and exited Idol's band by the end of the decade. Steve speaks with Shadoe Steele from his home in Burbank California and talks about his career with Billy and offers some technical specs regarding his own preferences in musical gear. rn

As well-known for their bizarrely teased haircuts as their hit single
"I Ran (So Far Away)," A Flock of Seagulls were one of the infamous
one-hit wonders of the new wave era. Growing out of the synth-heavy and
ruthlessly stylish new romantic movement, A Flock of Seagulls were a
little too robotic and arrived a little too late to be true new
romantics, but their sleek dance-pop was forever indebted to the
short-lived movement. The group benefitted considerably from MTV's heavy
rotation of the "I Ran" video in the summer of 1982, but they were
unable to capitalize on their sudden success and disappeared nearly as
quickly as they rocketed up the charts.

Hairdresser Mike Score (lead vocals, keyboards) formed A Flock of
Seagulls with his brother Ali (drums) and fellow hairdresser Frank
Maudsley (bass) in 1980, adding guitarist Paul Reynolds several months
later. The group released its debut EP on Cocteau Records early in 1981,
and while the record failed to chart, its lead track,
"Telecommunication," became an underground hit in Euro-disco and new
wave clubs. The band signed a major-label contract with Jive by the end
of the year, and their eponymous debut album appeared in the spring of
1982. "I Ran (So Far Away)" was released as the first single from the
album, and MTV quickly picked up on its icily attractive video, which
featured long shots of Mike Score and his distinctive, cascading hair.
The single climbed into the American Top Ten, taking the album along
with it. In the U.K., "I Ran" didn't make the Top 40, but "Wishing (If I
Had a Photograph of You)" reached number ten later that year; in
America, that single became a Top 40 hit in 1983, after "Space Age Love
Song" peaked at number 30. "Wishing" was taken from the group's second
album, Listen (1983), which was moderately successful.

However, the band's fortunes crashed shortly after the release of
Listen as 1984's The Story of a Young Heart failed to produce any hit
singles. Reynolds left after the album and was replaced by Gary
Steadnin; the band also added keyboardist Chris Chryssaphis. The new
lineup was showcased on 1986's Dream Come True, which failed to chart.
Shortly after its release, the band broke up. Mike Score assembled a new
lineup of A Flock of Seagulls in 1989, releasing the single "Magic" and
touring the U.S.A. The band failed to make any impact and most of the
members left by the end of the year. The band continued to tour
worldwide, although with major changes to its members, and in 1996
released a new album, The Light at the End of the World. Mike Score
chats with Shadoe from his home in Orlando Florida.

Al Kooper, by rights, should be regarded as one of the giants of '60s rock, not far behind the likes of Bob Dylan and Paul Simon in importance. In addition to co-writing one classic mid-'60s pop-rock song, "This Diamond Ring" (though it was written as an R&B number), he was a very audible sessionman on some of the most important records of mid-decade, including Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone." Kooper also joined and led, and then lost two major groups, the Blues Project and Blood, Sweat & Tears. He played on two classic blues-rock albums in conjunction with his friend Mike Bloomfield. As a producer at Columbia, he signed the British invasion act the Zombies just in time for them to complete the best LP in their entire history; and still later, Kooper discovered Lynyrd Skynyrd and produced their best work. Instead, in terms of public recognition, Kooper has been relegated to second-rank status, somewhere midway between John Mayall and Steve Winwood. Apart from the fact that he's made, and continues to make great music, it's the public's loss that he's not better respected outside the ranks of his fellow musicians. In a rare chat, Kooper speaks to Shadoe Steele from his Manhattan Brownstone.

Neil Sedaka speaks to Shadoe Steele from his New York City apartment. Coming from a doo wop background, yet classically trained, Neil Sedaka composed more than a 1,000 tunes, including a dozen major pop hits he corded between 1959 to 1963 that were co-authored with Howard Greenfield, his lyrist until 1972.
Singer, songwriter, and pianist Neil Sedaka enjoyed two distinct periods of commercial success in two slightly different styles of pop music: first, as a teen pop star in the late 1950s and early '60s, then as a singer of more mature pop/rock in the 1970s. In both phases, Sedaka, a classically trained pianist, composed the music for his hits, which he sang in a boyish tenor. And throughout, even when his performing career was at a low ebb, he served as a songwriter for other artists, resulting in a string of hits year in and year out, whether by him or someone else. For himself, he wrote eight U.S. Top Ten pop hits, including the chart-toppers "Breaking Up Is Hard to Do," "Laughter in the Rain," and "Bad Blood." The most successful cover of one of his compositions was Captain & Tennille's recording of "Love Will Keep Us Together," another number one.
