One of a kind would be a massive overstatement but there’s something about the Nokia 6760 slide that’s clearly against the usual run of things. Full QWERTY keyboards are an increasingly common sight on Symbian smartphones so this can’t be it. However, the Nokia 6760 slide is a generic messenger – noting to do with Nseries, Eseries or even XpressMusic.

Secondly, the 6760 slide was first seen and used in the US as Nokia Surge. It usually takes quite a while for Nokia handsets to cross the pond and that makes the 6760 / Surge concept interesting enough. Whether it was custom made for AT&T and then given a go at home is irrelevant. Nokia now have a smart messenger ready to roll in the lower midrange.

The new 6760 slide (we’ll use its European name from now on) is ultra compact and the full-QWERTY keyboard is backed by no numpad on top. The Internet and Messaging shortcuts up front are quite handy though and make perfect sense in both portrait and landscape hand hold. The neat messenger is trying to balance features, looks and ergonomics to offer all-round experience within budget. The absence of Wi-Fi support is a letdown, but the rest of the features are from the top drawer.

Key features

Quad-band GSM support and 3G with HSDPA

2.4″ 16M-color TFT display of 320 x 240 pixel resolution

Full QWERTY keyboard

Very compact, friendly weight and shape

Fast and responsive interface

Built-in accelerometer, UI auto-rotate, turn-to-mute

3 megapixel fixed focus camera, QVGA video recording @ 15fps

Symbian 9.3, S60 FP2

GPS with A-GPS support

Bluetooth v2.0 with A2DP, microUSB

microSD card slot with microSDHC support

Stereo FM Radio with RDS

Balanced audio output quality

Large capacity Li-Ion 1500 mAh (BP-4L) battery

Main disadvantages

Clattering slide hinge, loose battery cover

No Wi-Fi

No alphanumeric keypad: impossible to dial with the keyboard closed

Basic fixed focus camera, no extra features (not even geotagging)

No USB charging

No smart dial (3rd party solutions are available)

The Symbian-driven Nokia 6760 slide has a responsive and fast user interface and offers various social networking integration. The good web browser and robust messaging should be welcomed by users with a solid data plan.

We called it a generic messenger and there’s nothing really impressive about the idea behind this device – unless you’ve never seen or heard of E75 or 5730 XpressMusic. Not to mention the N97 mini.

Still, an ultra compact Symbian smartphone with a full QWERTY keyboard seems to make sense. The 6760 slide certainly misses on some features but it does well to position itself as a typical carrier’s handset. Fast data, solid messaging and friendly size will perhaps convince enough users they can live without WLAN. Plus, the 6760 slide styling seems to be trying to find middle ground between the too executive Eseries and too juvenile XpressMusic.

GPS is a must-have for every self-respecting phone these days. And it doesn’t even have to be a smartphone. From geotagging, through location-aware services and gaming, to full-featured in-car SatNav solution – at some point GPS is likely to have become essential to you even if you don’t need to be told to take the next right turn. Anyway, we guess it all boils down to whether you need it or whether you want it. A dedicated in-car sat-nav device is the more than obvious choice if you need that. But then, there’s always something for those who simply want more of their phone.

For one, the Nokia Navigator line will not only make you want one but probably encourage you to think you need it. Third generation into it already, they may as well have a point. The Nokia 6710 Navigator has the pedigree and the native software, but also the right kind of innovation. The touch-sensitive zoom bar is a bold step ahead, and so relevant to navigation. It sure is a strong point in favor of the Nokia Navigator against touchscreen devices.

Be that as it may, the 6710 Navigator will perhaps never be entirely convincing against a full-touch operated phone that takes navigation seriously, not to mention dedicated sat-nav equipment. But when it comes to another important question, the latest Nokia Navigator is emphatically a winner. It’s a phone before anything else and such a major upgrade it almost dooms predecessors to the scrap heap.

Keeping the same size as the preceding Nokia 6210, the latest Navigator by Nokia brings a larger and better screen, the impressive touch zoom bar beneath, Wi-Fi, better imaging, faster data, faster processing, updated interface, more power efficiency and incomparably better looks. Not bad at all, is it? There’s plenty to discover on this one, so let’s get on with it. Our plan is to help you find the Nokia 6710 Navigator before it finds you.

You may’ve thought Nokia lost their touch, you may be out of love with the Nseries but the Nseries are always keeping an eye on you. Their wide-angle, variable aperture eye. On you. Whether the Nokia Nseries are making up the ground lost in the megapixel race or claiming back what they believe is rightfully theirs, they seem to have the right leadership to put them back on the megapixel map.

Armed with one of the most advanced cameras in terms of hardware and features you don’t just find on every other handset out there, the N86 8MP is keen to take cue from the N85 and shake the Nseries out of their slumber. Now, in case you forgot, it’s still the market leader we’re talking about here, and that should probably tell why everybody is so worked up.

So, the question as always is whether strong performance will deliver on that awesome promise. And you’ve got us to help you make a more informed decision about buying Nokia N86 8MP. Given all the comments above, the N86 8MP is more the kind to encourage impulsive spending but you’ll choose wisely not to miss our write-up.

Sony Ericsson have long ago shown that they are not afraid of any challenge, producing handsets that have claimed a top spot on the market. There are still plenty of fans from those good old days that would love to see another market-leading device thrown their way.

A look at what’s between the XPERIA X1 and the Satio is enough to tell you what Sony Ericsson have been up to for the past year. A top-dog Cybershot (C905) and an all-round Walkman (W995) were both compelling enough but none would be trusted to top the portfolio of a company that used to call the shots at the forefront of mobile technology.

So, Sony Ericsson might have been busy cutting costs, fueling the hype behind their new wave gadgets (Satio, Aino and Rachael) or experimenting with Symbian and Android. But there’s little doubt about their full-time job. The Satio is a lot more than its mouthwatering features, full touchscreen debuting Symbian S60 or its 12 megapixel camera. It may be too much to say that all the company’s hopes lie with the Satio but the burden on its shoulders is disproportionate compared to any other flagship device we can think of.

This review, by the way, is coming after a massive spoiler. But the good thing is we know the Satio is all geared and ready to face some serious challenges. An industry leading cameraphone, or top-of-the-line smartphone, the Satio has a clear view of its goal. But you can be certain that its path forward will not be covered in rose petals. Sony Ericsson are in dire need of fresh devices (and cash) and the Satio should not be anything but a bestseller. When you’re trying to turn your fortunes around, you have very little room for error.
Key features

Android is the new Windows Mobile when you want to take an OS and slap it on with your own custom interface. Allegedly, Motorola is readying a new Android UI and their rumored Motorola Morrison finally got some specs to look at. The hardware specs seem to put it in the same ring as the other Android-powered devices.

The Motorola Morrison will have a 528MHz CPU and 256MB RAM (the Hero has 288MB), the screen is HVGA – 320 x 480 pixels – practically all Android phones use this resolution. The autofocus camera has 5 megapixels resolution. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS are covered too as well as smaller goodies such as accelerometer, 3.5 mm audio jack, microUSB port, proximity and ambient light sensor. The internal memory is expandable by microSD cards up to 32GB.

What really sets the Motorola Morrison apart is the side slide-out QWERTY. So far the specs claim only a QuickOffice viewer, but that keyboard would be a huge plus if Motorola goes for an editor instead just a viewer.

It seems that the new Android Morrison will run on a new custom Android UI developed by Motorola and called Blur. Heavily web-oriented, it will give users quick access to popular sharing websites. No surprise, Android is quite a web-oriented platform to begin with, but Motorola is adding a touch of social networking – combining your personal contacts with info from social networking sites, a la WebOS (HTC did it too with Hero’s Sense UI to some extent). The OS will be upgradeable over the air but more importantly it seems that it will feature push updates.

It’s not a giant leap of faith to think that the Motorola Morrison will run this new UI and the Heron (headed to AT&T) is a likely candidate too – it’s the one that is undergoing an interesting “sex change” – from Windows Mobile to Android.

The Morrison is rumored to come out on 21 October with specs indicating quad-band GSM support and tri-band 3G but in two versions – 900/1700/2100MHz and another one at 900/1900/2100MHz.

Grappling guns. Batman in Rorschach of Watchmen, everyone wants, but no one does really. Unless there is a kind of spyware company makes them really. Sort of similar q made to James Bond.

A student in mechanical engineering MIT has essentially given the world that it wants that it created a weapon to fire full-operation grapple.

You can see a video of it after the jump, and it is made with ordinary parts as a chemical fire extinguisher, copper, clamping collars, Blowgun, a carton of 20 ounces of CO2, and it is mounted on the NERVE N-strike Raider Rapid Fire CS 35.

As you may have guessed it, this is a project of Instructables, by a user named “crreed”. It has certainly me trying to build one of these bad boys, but I did to be shooting pictures of Osama bin Laden.

Not question. I would be in a large city, at the top of a high-rise building, and then I would aim for a fire escape or something secure. Once I was was certain the hook would hold my weight, I would swing as Batman.

Yeah, right, as I really would only. You always, to consider whether it is legal to possess a weapon to fire grappling hook. I mean, you could do some serious damage if you hit someone in the chest, as in the guards. I don’t remember if this happened in the movie, but I remember the comic. Honestly, I think that this is the comic that made me want to try swaying of the building with a gun to fire grappling hook.

We have seen the Spork in the past, which is the fusion of a spoon and a fork to help save you on cutlery, but what the N defined Sip spoon? The name itself gives the game outside and even had it not sound as cool as Spork, it will still have a dual function. Usually, when you have a few delicious watery soup you love just gobble down, you would have to pick up it with a spoon and bring the spoon in your mouth. Is no longer with this purchase $6.99 – everything you need to do is bring your mouth at the end of the spoon and it sucks – physics of a straw will come into action, and you will get more soup in your faster mouth than the traditional method. What would you say that for gastronomic innovation?

N Sip spoon is available from perpetual kid for $6.99 a set.

runs WinMo 6.5 this time around

Toshiba have just spread the good news to TG01 owners – they will get a free upgrade to Windows Mobile 6.5 when the OS launches (October 6th). Toshiba will also release the Toshiba TG01 Windows phone – a “new” version of Toshiba TG01 as you know it. The only difference between the two is the version of the OS – the Toshiba TG01 Windows phone will come with Windows Mobile 6.5 out of the box.

The Toshiba TG01 Windows phone will go on sale across Europe on the 6th of October when the new version of the mobile OS launches. In the same time Toshiba promises a free WinMo 6.5. upgrade to all current TG01 users.

We’ve played around with ver. 6.5 and it’s miles ahead of the previous incarnation – though not the full overhaul the outdated WinMo 6.1 needs.

The Toshiba TG01 still maintains its “king of the hill” position, despite the Samsung I8000 Omnia II and the likes trying to dethrone it. The huge 4.1″ WVGA screen is among the biggest ever put on a “pocket device” (“pocket” being used liberally here). The thickness of just 9.9mm somehow makes it the thinnest Windows Mobile phone ever and that still amazes us.

The 1GHz Snapdragon CPU is currently the fastest ever used in a mobile phone. And what is the best way to combine the two? Well, the preinstalled Core player holds one answer – video watching (well, the support for up 32GB microSD cards doesn’t hurt either). The built-in GPS receiver gives another answer – the Toshiba TG01 Windows phone is the size of a typical dedicated satnav unit.

“Simple, yet effective” is probably the best way to describe Garmin’s entry-level Nuvi 205W GPS device. This unit doesn’t pack a lot of bells and whistles and focuses on getting the basics right, delivering a user experience that’s easy for your chronically lost grandma to use.

The standout feature in this new model is a new “Where am I?” option that can come in handy during an emergency. But mostly, the 205W represents a significant performance boost over the older Nuvi 200 models.

The 205W is aimed at users who want the benefit of a big, responsive touch screen, but don’t want to break the bank. Techies should go elsewhere for more full feature sets, perhaps looking further up Garmin’s line or at competing TomTom models.

There never seems a shortage of heroes in this industry but every now and then a new breed emerges to change the rules of engagement. Ranks and titles are hard earned and we’ve seen enough contenders that barely deserve a hero’s death. Now, here comes a gadget that knows the best shot at glory is the high-definition one. Will the Samsung Omnia HD be strong enough to bear its name with honor or will it crumble under the weight of expectations?

As all-in-one multimedia touchscreens are battling for dominance, the HD category is now making its way to cellphones. HD is a magical marketing word that has seen as many abuses as it has had just uses. In the Omnia HD case, it’s an insignia of its truly superior rank. It’s not the first time a handset has claimed this tempting acronym, but the Omnia HD hits it where it matters – video recording and playback.

Samsung were the first to announce and release an HD-video-enabled handset. In the not so short time since then, none of their major rivals managed to introduce a competitor. So, all heads are anxiously turned to Samsung to see if they can deliver.

By the way, the Omnia HD comes equipped with everything that Samsung can put on the table. HD video recording and playback is definitely top-notch stuff but these are just the fancy extras on a full battle suit. There’s also a huge AMOLED screen, powerful 600 MHz processor and dedicated graphics chip. The all-in-one count continues with an 8 megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, GPS, generous 8/16 GB internal storage and DivX/XviD HD playback with subtitle support. Finally, the whole thing runs the latest Symbian S60 5th edition skinned with the new TouchWiz 3D interface.

Take the time to check out this genuine all-rounder.

In the beginning there was G1: the frontline trooper, the mean machine, the expendable GI. Elsewhere, in the HTC discourse, it was hope and vision. Well, it seems the dreamer’s Dream is coming true and someone there is really proud with what they’ve done. HTC Hero is perhaps the most advanced Android to date. And the OS is probably the closest the competition has ever come to the iPhone’s touchscreen revelation. The bold lines of the HTC Hero are just a hint at its superior hardware and when it comes to homescreen kit and widgets, it definitely has an edge even over the iPhone.

HTC and their Hero are finally bringing the fledgling new Andorid OS up to speed and up to par. Not that a Hero is badly needed to save the day for either HTC or the Android OS, but inspiration is always welcome. Having made their name in Windows Mobile, HTC probably most appreciate the creative break from the Microsoft mobile OS that’s become a habit (and a curse) for them. It would be too much to call it a plan B, but after all business is propelled by competition – even if it’s household.

Designwise, the HTC Hero brings even more style to the Android family. Breaking with the full QWERTY heritage but keeping the trademark angled chin, the Hero continues the tradition of slim full-touch phones much along the lines of HTC Magic that we also recently reviewed.

But today’s story is a Hero’s tale, and you can bet we’ve got one here to inspect. Let’s kick it off with a rundown of the key specs and the main letdowns that we’ve found so far.

Key features

Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support

3G with HSDPA 7.2 Mbps and HSUPA 2Mbps

Heavily customized (in both graphics and performance) Android OS v1.5 (Sense UI)

3.2″ capacitive touchscreen of HVGA resolution

Qualcomm MSM 7201A 528 MHz CPU, 288 MB RAM

5 megapixel autofocus camera with video recording

Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g and GPS receiver

Trackball navigation

Accelerometer sensor for auto-rotate and turn-to-mute

Digital compass for automatic navigation of maps

Multi-touch zooming in gallery and web browser

Standard miniUSB port for charging and data

Stereo Bluetooth (A2DP)

microSD card slot with support for up to 8GB cards (2GB one included)

Standard 3.5mm audio jack

Direct access to the official Android repository

Web browser comes with full Flash support

Smart dialing

Tethering support right out-of-the-box

Palm and Epic Games demonstrated Unreal Engine 3 up and running on the Palm’s webOS. It looks really awesome and the game developers have already a free access to it. Let the unreal games begin now!

During the Game Developer Conference (GDC) Palm and Epic Games definitely succeeded in making an impression with the getting the Unreal Engine 3 running under Palm’s webOS. As you can see from the video below, the graphics and special effects look fantastic and the sheer gaming potential looks awesome.

Earlier this week Palm released their Plug-In Development Kit (PDK), which specifically targets the game developers. It is a plug-in for the webOS SDK that allows easy porting of standard and OpenGL (1.1 or 2.0) apps and mixing those with C/C++ code.

The game developers are welcomed to download the Unreal Development Kit and build games with Unreal Engine 3 and now that the Palm’s PDK is available, we expect to see some fascinating products in the near future.

By the way the Palm’s Plug-In Development System (PDK) is a powerful tool for porting iPhone games to the webOS too, so we might see some popular iPhone apps ported to webOS very soon.

The distribution possibilities for such “mixed” apps is quite limited for now, but it will be possible with the next webOS update.

This is our cursory observations. First, its default home screen different. Now, some applications (clock, calculator, compass, and voice memos) immediately stuck in a folder called Utilities. There are also some new default wallpaper that is not crowded. You can also choose to disable the ability to send group messages (group messages).

Some non-cosmetic changes were also present exciting. Gone was the strange silent pauses when you take a phone call. Maps application to be seen more quickly and accurately than ever before. Post Taken from Radar Bali.

This rumor has been circulating around for a while but now it is as official as it gets: Microsoft Office Mobile is coming to Nokia smartphones. This and other mobile productivity and connectivity solutions are the direct result of the global alliance between the two giants, which was announced today.

No, Nokia don’t have any plans of making a Windows Mobile device any time soon. As of today the two companies will start working together on the design, development and marketing of diverse productivity solutions. Target users of the new products will be the corporate users who will appreciate them most. So, it’s not a surprise that the first products to incorporate them will be the members of the renowned E-series.

This might sound strange at first to some but a second look at the written above reveals that this alliance does not only plan to bring the Microsoft Office Mobile to the Symbian powered smartphones (in fact, Quickoffice already does it quite successfully), but also to add new and useful mobile professional solutions.

As of next year Nokia should start shipping the Microsoft Office Communicator Mobile on its smartphones with plans to widen the range of apps in the future.

So, what can we actually expect from that alliance? Here is a clue:

The ability to view, edit, create and share Office documents on more devices in more places with mobile-optimized versions of Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft OneNote

Enterprise instant messaging and presence, and optimized conferencing and collaboration experience with Microsoft Office Communicator Mobile

Mobile access to intranet and extranet portals built on Microsoft SharePoint Server

Enterprise device management with Microsoft System Center

With the over 200 million Nokia smartphones sold worldwide it’s not a surprise that Microsoft decided to start this alliance namely with the Finns. And as far as Nokia is concerned, its still young service Ovi will now have a strong reinforcement with Microsoft by its side.
