Makeup. Most of us have a love/hate relationship with our makeup routine, right? It seems like even when we painstakingly follow every step in those makeup tutorials, our cat eyes end up looking more like sad clowns and our contours make us feel like a Picasso painting. That's why it's so important to use makeup to enhance your natural beauty!

It can certainly be frustrating for those of us who feel like we have no idea what we’re doing. (And c’mon — isn’t that most of us?) But, as they say, the key to wearing makeup is to look like you’re not wearing it. So how do you achieve that more natural, I-just-woke-up-like-this glow you had as a 16-year-old? Well, here are a few tips that will help you put your best face forward!

Treat your skin right

The expression that “beauty is only skin-deep” can actually be taken literally. Your skin is the canvas for any makeup you’re applying, so you want to make sure it’s fresh, clean, moisturized and ready to go before you do anything else. Even if you plan on applying makeup all over your face, don’t forget to protect it from the elements — particularly the sun. Make sure to apply a moisturizing sunscreen daily (yes, even if you’re staying indoors) and remember that the “magic number” for SPF is 30. (Here’s a simple hack to help you keep that in mind: To have the face of a 30-year-old, apply SPF 30.)

And don’t forget to protect your lips, too! Keep that pucker nice and pouty with an SPF 30 lip balm to hydrate and protect you from those damaging UV rays. 

Prime for perfection when you use makeup to enhance your natural beauty

If we’re going to compare your skin to a canvas, it follows that your face needs a little primer before you start “painting,” as it were. The purpose of primer is to help your makeup glide on smoothly and evenly and last beyond your midday lunch date. But be aware that not all primers are created equal. You’ll want to find a primer that fits your skin type — whether you’re dry, oily or have slightly larger pores. 

Go easy on the foundation in your daily makeup routine

The goal shouldn’t be to hide your face — it should be to use makeup to enhance your natural beauty that’s already there! So with that in mind, resist the urge to shellac your foundation on your face like a mask. Instead, start minimal. Depending on your skin tone, you’re going to want to pick either a pinkish (for fair skin) or yellow undertone (for darker, olive-tone skin) for foundation and then use a brush or a beauty blender to apply it lightly around your face until it’s evenly distributed.

If you don’t like the idea of wearing foundation every day, you could simply use a tinted moisturizer, BB cream or CC cream to give your face some light coverage. 

Wake up your eyes

Sure, you might have only gotten three hours of sleep and you feel like an extra on The Walking Dead, but no one else needs to know that! Give your eyes a bright, wide awake look by putting a few dots of concealer underneath them as well as in the corner by your nose. Aim for a concealer that’s two shades lighter than your regular skin tone. Make sure to blend it lightly with your finger or a brush.

Okay, so you’ve got your face all moisturized, primed, covered and ready to go. Now it’s time to hold all that base-level work in place with a good setting powder. A mineral setting powder that hides fine lines should do the trick nicely. Again, the key is to go light here so you don’t give off Mrs. Doubtfire vibes or mess up your foundation/base. Use a blending brush and focus on applying the powder on areas of your skin that are more prone to shine. (For many of us, that’s the T-zone.) 

Add a little color

Now that you’ve got everything all set to last, here comes the fun part where you get to add in some color! Bronzer can give you that nice I-just-got-back-from-a-vacay-in-Hawaii look provided you apply it in the right spots. Aim for the areas of your face that would typically see the most sun — your hair line, the top of your cheeks, the bridge of your nose, and blend, blend, blend!

After that, you can make yourself look even more fresh-faced with a little touch of blush on the apples of your cheeks. Got a round or square-shaped face? Experts say to try applying it in a C shape from your temples to your cheekbones. You can even add a little blush to your temples or the bridge of your nose to create a more defined look.

Go for a subtle contour 

While contouring may not be your thing (and it’s perfectly fine if it’s not), you can take things one step further by applying a cheek contour to the hollows of your cheeks, your jawline and the sides of your nose to give yourself a more defined look. The idea is to create shadows that will add angles to your face. And since shadows are the key here, pick a contour that’s a couple shades darker than your foundation. And don’t forget to blend!

Frame your face with your brows

Those of us who over plucked our eyebrows in the early 2000s are probably still trying to catch up to the full-brow look that’s in style today. But even if your eyebrows are on the thinner side, you can still plump and feather them up with a little brow brush or spoolie, filling in with a pencil, powder, gel or liner when needed. The key is to have your brows begin from the inner corner of your eye with the arch roughly two-thirds from the middle of the brow to the tail. Follow your brow’s natural shape as well as the direction of your hair when you’re filling in sparse spots.

Pick a complementary shade of shadow for your eye color

That dramatic smokey eye certainly has its place and can be a knockout for date night, but in your everyday use, try to stick with an eyeshadow that enhances your eye color.

• For blue eyes: Pick browns, golds, roses and neutrals
• For brown eyes: Pick purple, warm rust, bronze and gold
• For green eyes: Pick purples, bronze and silver
• For hazel eyes: Pick pink, copper, purple or green

There are obviously no hard-and-fast rules when it comes to beauty trends, so the No. 1 goal is to choose whatever makes you feel the most comfortable and confident in your own skin.

Draw a fine line

To make your lashes look a little fuller and to give you that coveted doe-eyed look, try adding a small bit of eyeliner as close to your lash line as possible. If you want a natural look, don’t stray beyond your natural eye line.

Curl your lashes before adding mascara

You might think that mascara alone will do the trick in creating those baby doll lashes — but if you’re skipping out on curling them, you’re missing an important step. Curling your lashes will give them that extra boost when you’re going for a bright-eyed look. When you apply mascara, look down so that you can get as close to the root of your lashes as possible without getting those annoying smudges on your eyelid.

And for some of us, the first snowfall also brings tears to our eyes — but for different reasons. 

If winter were a Starburst, it would be yellow. 

If winter were a car, it would be a Chrysler PT Cruiser Convertible. 

If winter were an actor, it would be Nicolas Cage.

None of these things is inherently bad — it just takes a special kind of person to appreciate them.

But life is too short to waste it dreading an entire season of the year. So, what’s a winter-hating person to do?

First, let’s discuss the main reasons WHY you might not be enjoying yourself so much during the winter months. Then we can tackle the antidotes to each of these drawbacks one by one.

Reasons people hate winter:

1. The cold. 
2. The darkness. 
3. Lack of interest in winter sports or activities.

And now that we’ve clearly identified the issues, now it’s time for the best part: the solutions. 

Give each of these little winter tips and tricks a try and who knows? You might even become a fan of the frosty season once you’re done! (Or at least you and the chilly weather can learn to peaceably coexist.) 

1. Try out the Danish art of Hygge

Did you know that people in Denmark don’t just tolerate the winter? They actually look forward to it! And that has a lot to do with a little practice called “hygge” (pronounced “HUE-guh”). The basic idea behind hygge is that you do whatever you can to create a warm, cozy, inviting atmosphere. (Think: basking by a fire, wrapped up in a soft blanket, sipping something warm, etc.) Really, anything that gives you that “warm ‘n fuzzy” feeling is on the table. That includes spending time with loved ones, lighting good-smelling candles, baking tasty treats, and anything else that brings joy into your life. It’s self-care at its best!

2. Take some midday walks (or hikes)

It’s true, there’s not as much sun this time of the year, but rest assured — it’s still up there! You just have to take advantage of any opportunity you get to have a little facetime with the big, bright ball in the sky. Talk a little walk on your lunch break or go for a midday hike during the weekend. And if you really can’t catch those rays in real-time, invest in a good light therapy lamp and make sure to consume plenty of vitamin D!

3. Go swimming

Wait, what? Swimming? In winter? Yes! Just not outdoors. (Unless you’re a fan of hypothermia.) Think about it: People usually associate swimming with summertime. Well, what if you could trick your brain a little by taking the kids to your local gym and recreation center and enjoying their indoor pool? (Better yet: spend a night at a hotel and enjoy the pool there. Much more of a novelty.) Sure, you could keep trying different winter sports. But if it’s just not your jam, stick to what you love!

4. Have something to look forward to

Life can easily start to feel a little like the movie “Groundhog Day” when the days are darker, colder, and a little repetitive. To break free from the monotony, it helps to have something on the horizon. It might be something simple like a little girls' night out once a month (or once a week!) or it could be something bigger — like a concert or a vacation. Try to inject a little novelty into your weekly routine. Go out to your favorite restaurant. Hang out with an old buddy. Treat yourself to a massage. Just do something you’ll be excited about!

5. Try a new hot drink 

There’s nothing wrong with a packet of Swiss Miss if that’s your thing. But you’ll have a lot more fun if you branch out and try some new hot drink flavors, like Perk Chill’s Caramel Apple Pie A la Mode or Chocolate Salted Caramel Pretzel. Mmm. 

6. Get winter tires

Yeah, driving on snow, sleet and ice can really bring out the white knuckles. That’s natural. 7. Work out

At this point, you already know the basics of good hygiene (frequent hand washing, not touching your face, avoiding sick people, etc.). But if you want to give your immune system — as well as your mental health — a boost, move your body! Find time to exercise a little every day, even if it’s just for a few minutes. That way, if you do fall victim to one of those nasty winter viruses, perhaps they won’t be quite as nasty.

8. Shovel your neighbor’s driveway

Very few people actually love shoveling. And as much as you hate it, your neighbor probably hates it just as much or more. One good way to take your mind off your own misery, though, is to look beyond yourself and use each storm as a service opportunity. Shovel your neighbor’s driveway or walkway and then enjoy the look of sheer gratitude on their faces once they realize what you’ve done. Service does the heart a lot of good.

9. Take a vacation

Who says you have to stick around for the full 3–6 months of wintry cold and darkness? Just as a little break now and then from the people you love most helps you love them even more, a little “time out” from the cold might help you brave it a little better when you return. Pick a warmer destination — even if it’s only for a couple of days — and hit the road to recharge in the sun. This also checks the box for #4, too!

10. Go on a winter clothing shopping spree

Okay, here’s one more way to combat those dreaded frigid temperatures. The Scandinavians have a saying: “There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing.” Ladies, maybe all you really need to inject a little life into those darker, chillier days is to treat yourself to a new, comfy, cozy, winter outfit!

There are certain closet staples every woman should have to see her through until springtime:

• A good, warm coat.
• Plenty of sweaters and sweatshirts.
• Good tops for layering. (Like this turtleneck.)

Talk about the tough stuff

In your efforts to stay positive, don’t overcorrect by being too positive. (You’ve probably heard the term “toxic positivity,” right?) Couples need to be able to share the good and the bad with each other. If you’re having a hard day or something is keeping you up at night, tell your partner! You don’t have to be a Debbie Downer all the time and treat them like a dumping ground for all your complaints, but share what’s in your heart and mind on a regular basis. You can definitely show your gratitude with your actions, but actually saying the words “thank you” is important, too. Especially if your sweetie is a “words of affirmation” type of person. 

Check in during the day

Assuming you work in separate locations, 8 or 10 hours is a long time to go without speaking to one another. A simple text at lunchtime or whenever you get the chance sends more than an SMS message. It lets them know you’re thinking about them.

Respect your time with them

It can be so easy to get distracted by outside things when you’re in a relationship. Whether that’s friends, work, or that little cell phone in your pocket, don’t let anything take away too much time from your loved ones. Sure, every once in a while, hang out with your besties or take a little “me time” to shop all the aisles at Target. But let your spouse know that he or she is Numero Uno when it comes to priorities. 

Be physically close

Alright, slow down, tiger. We’re not necessarily talking about bedroom stuff here (though that’s important, too). No, this means that if you’re sitting down on the couch, at the dinner table, or in a church pew, sit next to your spouse or s/o. Not only does this send the message of “hey, I like you,” but physical touch also releases that feel-good hormone, oxytocin. 

Kiss — for this long

Speaking of oxytocin, there’s nothing like some good kissin’ to get those feel-good hormones running! But don’t just settle for a little peck on the cheek. Relationship expert John Gottman recommends that couples share a 6-second kiss each day because “a six-second kiss is a kiss with potential.” So set that timer on your Apple Watch and pucker up!

Support each other’s passions

So your husband loves cars and you don’t. That’s fine! Don’t roll your eyes every time he drools at a passing Lamborghini on the freeway. Lean into it. Send him pictures of his favorite cars that you spot around town. Go with him to test drive a few on a free Saturday. Stuff like that can mean the world.

Don’t keep score

The minute you start to tally things in your mind (e.g., laundry, dishes, bill paying, grocery shopping) you can start to feel resentful if your other half seems to be slacking a bit in one of the “categories” you’ve created. Instead of demanding equity, be the one in the relationship who serves happily. Don’t tidy up the house out of duty or a sense of martyrdom; do it out of love! After all, there are probably plenty of things your spouse/significant other does that you may not be aware of.

Have a “thing” that’s just between the two of you

Be it a secret handshake, an inside joke, or a simple pleasure (indulging in a treat while you watch your favorite TV show, for example) — have something that you two do on a regular basis that helps you connect in a unique way. 

Forgive faster

Sometimes your s/o is going to forget things (like that milk you asked them to pick up on the way home). Sometimes they’ll leave dishes in the sink of your newly cleaned kitchen. They might even be a little short with you when you ask them questions like, “How was your day?” 

Don’t assume that they’re doing any of this out of spite. Like you, they’re probably just doing the best they can — and some days are a little harder than others. Be a little more forgiving when they don’t show up the way you hoped they would. Don’t stew on the negative. Feel your feelings and move on quickly. 

Ditch the perfectionism

It’s a pretty well-documented fact that people who expect things to be perfectly fair in life are much more miserable than those who can roll with the punches of the ups and downs. Well, your relationship is one of those things that’s going to have some ups and downs. (By virtue of the fact that two humans are involved, you can pretty much count on it.) Deal with the bad days/moments and don’t make them mean something about your relationship. It’s just life!

Set goals together

In the world of “you do you,” don’t forget about doing “us” too! Couples that set goals together and have something to look forward to will have a greater sense of purpose. Even if your goals are stressful ones (like, oh, renovating an entire house while you’re living in it) the experience can draw you closer because it’s something you go through together. (It’s why all those action-adventure couples end up together at the end of the movie. The shared trauma. :))

Ask questions for connection

How well do you really know your sweetheart? Because there’s always more to learn! Set aside some time — whether it’s on a dinner date, out on a walk, or some late-night pillow talk — to ask each other some questions. You might be surprised by what you find out! Just pick one

They say habits take 21 days to form, so don’t overwhelm yourself all at once with everything on this list. Pick the one you think is most important and commit to it for three weeks straight. Your relationship will thank you!

Perhaps no other holiday comes with more mixed emotions than the supposed most romantic day of the year: Valentine’s Day.

As a single person, it might not be your favorite holiday. And as a married person, you might like it even less because *phew* talk about pressure. (You can love a person for 364 days, but mess this one up and you might be sleeping on the couch.)

Okay, that may be slightly dramatic, but still — there are some definite expectations about this holiday, whether they’re spoken or not.

This year, why not make life easier for everyone and simply be your OWN Valentine? Instead of waiting for someone else to pull through with what you want, just get it yourself! Better yet, be the person who gives great gifts. 

Valentine’s Day, Galentine’s Day, Singles Awareness Day — whichever one you celebrate, there’s something on this list for you or your girlfriends! Use it as your own personal shopping guide or pass it along as a not-so-subtle hint to your s/o to up your chances of getting something you’ll love this year. (They may even thank you for it!)

Gifts to eat

It’s been said that the way to man’s heart is through his stomach, but it’s true for ladies, too! You can’t go wrong when you give a girl a good meal or a delectable treat she can enjoy at the end of a hard day. (Chocolate has healing powers. We’re not making that up.)

Sure, you can opt for the safe (albeit cliche) choice of chocolates and roses, but perhaps it’s time to think outside of the heart-shaped box, hmm? Here are a few ideas:

• Chocolate-covered cinnamon bears. Always a winner in our books — and the perfect complement to a luxurious bubble bath. (See above.)
• Treats from a foreign country. Major bonus points if you include a surprise trip to said country, though that’s definitely going the extra (few thousand) mile(s). 
• Kouign-amann. Pronounced “queen uh-mahn” and also known as “ridiculously delicious.”
• Levain Bakery cookies. They ship them! Or you can make your own with this copycat recipe.
• A treat from Magnolia Bakery. Yes, they ship, too! This is a good one if your honey is a Chip and Jo fan.
• Salt & Straw ice cream. Definitely worth shipping if you don’t live close to one of their locations. 

Gifts to wear

Have you ever met a woman who was offered new clothing and said, “Mmm . . . no, thanks. I’m good”? We haven’t either. Stylish, comfy and affordable clothing is always a winner in the gifts category. But wearable gifts don’t always have to be clothes — it could be makeup or jewelry, too! (Go for all three and you’ve got the Valentine’s Day trifecta.) 

Any one of these is a great pick:

• A new dress. For church, date night or any other special occasion, a gal can never have too many dresses!
• Wrinkle-free clothes. They say you can’t give the gift of time, but we disagree. Fill your closet with these beautiful (and versatile) wrinkle-free clothes and you won’t be worrying about choosing your next outfit or warming up the iron every morning, which saves you about 29.3 hours per year. (We’re just guessing.)

• A fanny pack. This once-mocked accessory is now a coveted fashion statement. If you haven’t already jumped on the train, it’s time to get one.
• A good water bottle. Nothing says “I love you” like keeping yourself and others hydrated, right? If you’re a hydro flask fan, you’ll love this water bottle. 
• A makeup bag. But make it a good one that will last!
• A travel tote. In case you’re lucky enough to be hitting the road soon (or you’re just heading to Costco) this bag makes a great grab-n-go companion. 
• A rechargeable hand warmer. Obvious benefits here.
• Bluetooth tracking devices. No more losing those keys (and your mind, by extension).

Gifts to entertain

Experiences do make the best gifts, right? If having fun is your love language, you’ll love any of these:

• Play or concert tickets. Nothing beats live entertainment. Treat yourself and a friend or take your sweetheart out for a date night to your favorite band, comedian or stage play.
• Your favorite childhood board game. Just imagine the pangs of nostalgia you’ll feel when you crack open “Mystery Date,” “Guess Who?” or “Mouse Trap.” 
• Amazon Fire Stick. Movie buffs and streaming fans can turn any television into a smart TV with one of these bad boys. (P.s. this is not a sponsored link.)
• Cooking classes. You’re never too old to learn a new skill — especially the kind of skill that fills your belly with delicious food! Look for classes near you and sign up with your partner or a friend.
• Camping gear. For the outdoorsy, adventurous types.

Gifts that don’t cost a thing

Of course, you don’t have to spend money to knock it out of the park on Valentine’s Day. Sometimes the best gifts are the spontaneous ones that come from the heart and show how much you truly care about and know someone.

• Cook for someone. A classically romantic move if you’re trying to impress your loved one. Don’t forget the candles and mood music!
• Clean up. Oh boy, this one. This one should maybe be the No. 1 item on this whole list because a little cleaning goes a long way in terms of showing your love and affection. (Ladies, is anything sexier than a man who washes dishes, folds laundry, vacuums and scrubs toilets? We think not.)
• Take the kids. Sometimes all anybody wants is a moment to themselves to do exactly. What. They. Want. With no interruptions. Offer to take someone’s kids for a day (or even for a couple of hours) and it might just be the nicest gift they ever get.
• Share your talent. Learn a song on the guitar, paint a picture or bake a special treat. YouTube can teach you anything, friend.
• Simply spend time with someone. Give the gift of your presence. (See what we did there?) Block out a few hours and let your friend or significant other choose whatever they want to do. 

Keep this list handy for Valentine’s Day, birthdays, Christmas or any other occasion and you’ll be set for life!

It’s the Pinterest quote that has taunted many an overachieving, overworked person since the day someone posted it. 

The thing is, comparing yourself to Queen Bey is most likely not motivating you to achieve your hopes and dreams, is it? (Nah. Didn’t think so.)

But that doesn’t mean you can’t get there! In fact, with just a few tiny tweaks to your routine, this may shape up to be your best, most productive year yet. 

How? Try this.

Get up earlier

For night owls who don’t care about catching that early worm, this suggestion may be a bit of a yawn. (Let’s face it. Not everyone is a morning person.)

But most people would agree that there’s a certain advantage that comes with getting up while the world is still quiet. 

It’s easier to focus, there are much fewer distractions (provided you pocket that smartphone for a minute), and you get to decide what to do with that “extra” time. 

That’s right — you are in charge. Not your boss. Not your kids. You. That’s an empowering way to start the day.

However, this suggestion may backfire if you don’t compensate by going to bed earlier the night before. You’ll zero out that productivity if you end up crashing around 2 p.m. out of sheer exhaustion every day!

Set bite-size goals 

On January 1st, you, like so many others, are full to the brim with ambition for the new year. You’re going to get in shape, learn to play piano, cook gourmet meals every night, keep that house spotlessly clean, and solve world hunger while you’re at it!

Yeah . . . You probably already know that’s not exactly how things work. And it’s why so many New Year’s resolutions don’t live to see February. 

If you want to set goals the right way, you’ve got to be consistent — and they’ve got to be doable. 

Instead of making an entire meal out of a project, think of it as an appetizer. Just take little bites out of it here and there. 

Even if you set aside just five minutes for exercise, studying, planning, reading, or whatever else you want to accomplish, you’ll have made a lot of progress by the end of the week.

Move your body

Stuck in a rut in the middle of your workday? Writer’s block cramping your style? Can’t find the motivation to finish that sewing project?

Get up and do a few jumping jacks. Run around the block. Blast your favorite tunes and have a spontaneous dance party.

Research shows that moving your body (let’s not even call it the “e” word, for fear of scaring some of you off) has massive benefits when it comes to productivity levels.

In one study, employees who went to a gym in the middle of their workday managed their time better and had more pleasant interactions with their coworkers. (Remember: endorphins make you happy.)

So, if you want to jumpstart your brain and kick your creativity into high gear, don’t just sit there — get moving!

Learn to delegate 

You may fancy yourself Wonder Woman, but even she had friends who helped out here and there. 

Sometimes the key to productivity is actually doing less. (Just let that counterintuitive thought marinate in your brain for a minute.)

There may be tasks you’re taking on that could be easily passed on to someone else. 

Got kids? Teach ‘em to load the dishwasher.

Tired of tidying up your home every week? Hire a cleaning person to tackle all those nooks and crannies you never seem to have time to reach. You might balk at the idea at first (I’ll dust my own bookshelf, thank you!) but just ask yourself this: What is your time worth? If you make $60/hour working from home and a cleaning service charges $40/hour, you’re paying yourself $20 to have someone else do the “dirty” work. Something to think about!

Minimize decision fatigue

Decisions, decisions, decisions. They’re like little red stop lights in your day, halting your progress and they can wear your poor brain out. 

Luckily, there are a few things you can do to reduce this decision fatigue by cutting down or simplifying the choices you have to make each day.

For example, you might:

• Pick out your clothes the night before. (A closet full of items you can easily mix and match makes this super duper easy and will likely add years to your life.)
• Plan out meals a week in advance. Some people even have quarterly meal plans that change with the seasons. 
• Plug in addresses into your phone or GPS so you don’t have to mentally figure out how to get somewhere.
• Limit your options. How many shades of lipstick does a girl really need? Instead of 20 tubes, maybe cut that down to 5. One of them will work with your outfit. Don’t worry.
• Set a deadline. Whether you circle a date on a calendar or set an alarm on your phone, commit to making a decision (big or small) by a certain time. 
• Stop overthinking it. Odds are, the cardigan you wear at your job interview isn’t going to be the deciding factor on whether or not you get the position. (Unless it’s this cardigan, which is a surefire winner.)

Listen to music — or don’t

This may seem like a terribly confusing suggestion. Which is it? Music: yea or nay? Well, it depends on the situation. 

There are some studies that found music’s mood-enhancing capabilities help people be more productive for certain mundane, repetitive tasks. (Hello, washing dishes and folding laundry. Lookin’ at you.) 

On the other hand, if you’re trying to, oh, pen the next great American novel or file that urgent report, complete silence will help your brain stay on task instead of rapidly flipping between two different attention-getters. 

(Although there are some pretty soothing playlists on YouTube designed to help you study and concentrate better.)

Take regular breaks

You can’t chop much wood with a dull axe, friend. When you’re feeling overwhelmed with your to-do list, it’s time to do the same thing you do when the computer freezes: hit that reset button.

Take a breather. 

Try a 10-minute power nap.

Grab your favorite snack and people watch on a park bench for a few minutes. 

Play Candyland with your toddler. (They only have a 5-minute attention span anyway, so it won’t last long.)

Whatever helps you de-stress instead of distress, just do it. You’ll find it’s easier to get things done afterward.

So, the next time you’re feeling a little down, try getting up and get moving with some simple at-home exercises that are sure to put you in a better mood.

How often should you exercise?

First of all, reaping those mental health benefits requires consistency, so it helps to have a regular routine. If you’re training for a marathon, that’s one thing. But if you’re focusing on boosting your mental health, here’s some really good news: a little goes a long way. 

Simply get started. Sure, the “optimal” recommendation may be 30–60 minutes for three to five days a week, but if that sounds impossible, try something easier. Start with one minute a day if that’s what it takes!

And here’s another important thing to keep in mind: There is such a thing as too much exercise. Pushing yourself too hard, too fast or too far will have the opposite effect if you’re hoping to feel better. Moderation is key, friends. Listen to your body!

What type of exercise is best for mental health?

This may be a bit of a trick question. Since everyone is different (different mental health struggles/needs, different interests, etc.) what’s best for one person may not fit for someone else. (Your sister may love running, but you might be more of a yoga gal, for example.)

There are some studies, though, that have found that aerobic exercises like jogging, swimming, cycling, walking, dancing and even gardening (yes, gardening) have been proven to reduce anxiety and depression. But when both the snow and the temperature are falling outside, that might put a damper on your swimming/cycling/gardening plans.

And if you don’t have a gym pass, don’t despair — here are a few easy workouts you can do in the comfort of your own home! (And your body and brain will thank you.)

5 simple workouts you can do at home

All five of these suggestions are so ridiculously easy, there’s no excuse for not trying them! None of them requires any equipment and can be done in as little as 10 to 30 minutes. (Or longer, depending on how many reps you want to get in.)

Jog in place

Jogging in place gives you all the cardiovascular benefits of running without requiring you to actually hit the pavement. Turn on your favorite show or pop a podcast in your ear and start moving those legs up and down. No treadmill or fancy machine necessary! 

Walk up and down the stairs

Another good calorie-burner? Stairs. You could get your heart pumping and burn around 100 calories just by walking up and down them for 10 minutes! No stairs at your house? Step up and down off of a stool or chair and it’ll achieve the same effect. (Just be careful and make sure your footing is stable.)

Dance

Yup. Getting your groove on in the kitchen isn’t just a fun post-dinner activity. It counts as exercise and it’s an endorphin party! It’s even more fun if you get the whole family involved. (Bonus points if you can coax your teenagers into it.)

Looking for something a little more challenging?

These easy peasy workouts are a great way to get your feet wet in the world of at-home exercising, but if you’re the competitive type, you might be looking for something that will push you a little harder. If so, we’ve got not one but TWO month-long fitness challenges that will leave you feeling pumped by the time your 30 days are up. 

*Note: If you’re thinking of tackling these two challenges simultaneously, pump the brakes, girl! Focus on just one at a time so you can reap the rewards at the end of two separate months. (Trust us.)

Challenge #1: Abs

Okay, girl, before we share this one, we want to stress one very important point: The Abs Challenge is not about looking “hot” or “skinny” or fixing that “mommy tummy.” There are actually a lot of health benefits associated with strengthening your core, and it’s not all about looks. (In fact, if looks are your main motivation, you might just want to skip this one.)

On the other hand, if you like the sound of having less back pain and being able to do daily tasks (laundry, picking up your toddlers, gardening, playing volleyball, swinging that Wonder Woman lasso, etc.) with ease, then this is 100% for you!

This 30-day abs challenge helps you work up to doing 125 sit-ups, 200 crunches, 65 leg raises, and a 120-second plank by the time you’re through, and YOU. CAN. DO. IT.

Again, this is not so much about how you look as how you feel! And did you know that your derriere is the largest muscle in your body? It’s time to take better care of it!

A strong bum means greater speed and agility as well as a decreased risk of injury when exercising. (Because who’s got time for pulled hammies and thrown out backs? No one — especially not you.)

The 30-day Booty Challenge will have you squatting, bridging, and lunging like a pro by the end of it.

Start the challenge ASAP! Even better, grab a friend and do it together! There’s nothing like good ol’ positive peer pressure to keep you motivated.

How to make your workouts more fun

Look — we get it. It's hard to find the motivation to do something you don’t enjoy. (Some of us would rather stick our finger in a socket than work out, amirite?) Usually, it’s because we’re too busy, too tired, or just plain bored by the idea. If that describes you, it’s time to inject a little fun into the process. 

If you dread workouts and exercise, here are a few things you can try:

• Create a workout playlist. Few things are more mood-altering than music, and you know you’ve got some tunes that make you want to move. Why not use that to your advantage and add them to a customized workout playlist?
• Invest in quality workout clothes. Honest question: How much more motivated would you feel to move your body if you were wearing workout clothes you loved? Finding the best activewear for your body shape is a great way to amp up your confidence!
• Involve your friends. Everything's better with friends, right? Whether you invite your BFFs to work out with you or turn it into a friendly competition, involving other people will help you stay active and accountable.

Lending a hand to our Texas friends

One of our favorite memories from 2021 came at the beginning of the year when the SexyModest community (people like YOU!) banded together to help those in need. After getting hit with some extreme weather, many of our Texas friends were left without some much-needed supplies — food, water, diapers for babies, etc. After putting a call out to her online followers, Brigitte was BLOWN AWAY by the response. Here’s what she wrote on Insta:

You guys!!! You did it!!! You filled a 53-foot semi with essentials for Texas! In spite of everything I hope you know that people are good. Like really really good. We had helpers, donations, stuff getting dropped off in trailer loads and car loads and truthfully I had to keep the tears from flowing most of the day! My warehouse manager Jesse showed up on a Saturday with not a question asked but excited to help. My DMs have blown up with thank you’s...you guys...I can’t take one ounce of credit. YOU all made this happen. This truck is set to leave Monday morning to Austin, Texas full of water, diapers, wipes, formula, toilet paper, and hygiene products! This Instagram tribe I get to call mine is full of the kind of people you want on your team. Sometimes miracles are just good people with kind hearts❤️ Thank you again Legacy Logistics & Balkan Express for donating the semi and the driver.

Fitness challenges

One of our goals at SexyModest is to help women look and feel their best by inspiring healthy habits. With that in mind, Brigitte issued two fitness challenges this year — the Abs Challenge and the Booty Challenge — and BOY were we blown away by those of you who participated! The consensus was that y’all loved pushing yourselves and working on a goal together. (Some of you even got your husbands on board!) 

It wasn’t about losing weight or fitting a certain body image — it was all about strengthening your body and doing hard things. Many of you went from not being able to do a single sit-up to knocking out 100 in a row by day 25! 

If you missed the challenges, it’s not too late to do them at home yourself. And be on the lookout for more at-home workouts and fitness challenges to come in the new year!

It’s been a minute since Brig and Jase have gotten behind the podcast mic, but that’s only because they’re still recovering from the sheer awesomeness of the episodes released earlier this year. The best Girls Night Out ever

Ladies, for SURE one of the best parts about 2021 was FINALLY getting to party with all of you (or at least 600 of you) in person! The SexyModest team was so happy to be able to host the biggest Pop-up Shop/Girls Night Out to date back in October, and it was one for the record books. You can probably still smell your mom’s Christmas cookies or have fond memories of the annual Christmas Eve pageant at Grandpa’s, right?)

You’ve probably got a few of these on your list already, but there may be some you haven’t tried yet. Who knows? You might just discover your new favorite family tradition!

1. Make a custom “Christmas Bucket List” as a family. Here’s the first thing you should keep in mind about traditions: They lose their meaning if they become more of a burden than a joy. That said, it’s a good idea to lower your expectations for the holiday season and not try to do EVERYTHING. Have your family create a list of must-do things before the season is over. That way, anything else you do is just icing on the gingerbread house.
2. Read your favorite Christmas stories each night. The Grinch Stole Christmas. The Polar Express. The Night Before Christmas. One of the best things about the holiday season is reading those once-a-year holiday classics. Read one each night with the family! If you want to make it even more fun, wrap up 25 Christmas stories and choose one to read by the tree each night. Your kids will love it.
3. Make your own advent calendar. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the traditional chocolate advent calendar, but if you want to make things more meaningful, consider putting your own spin on it. You can create a service advent calendar with different ideas for helping people each day leading up to Christmas. (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ Light the World campaign is a good example if you don’t want to make your own.) Or maybe you turn that bucket list into an advent calendar! Do one activity each day leading up to Christmas.
4. Go caroling. Whether you’re a great singer or can’t carry a tune to save your life, this is a fun one. If you’re feeling super ambitious, you can even organize a lip sync battle or a flash mob.
5. Drive around and see the lights. Those long, dark winter nights can start to feel a little cabin-feverish. So when you and the kids need a break, pile into the family car, crank some merry tunes and drive around to see the lights. Bonus points if you make a stop for hot cocoa. 
6. Take a moonlit winter stroll. There’s something extra peaceful about winter evenings, especially after a recent snowstorm. Take a walk around the neighborhood at night and appreciate the stillness. It’s a good way to refresh the body and spirit.
7. Send letters to Santa. If your children still hear sleigh bells on Christmas Eve (lucky you), have them write letters to the big guy up North. (Yes, you can actually write a letter to Santa Claus — and get a response back!)
8. Watch your favorite holiday movies. It’s just not the holidays without your favorite festive flicks, is it? Take your picks from this list and cozy up with the fam.
9. Create a holly jolly music playlist. Nothing can brighten spirits faster than music — especially Christmas music. If you don’t already have a Christmas music playlist, start putting one together and listen to it anytime you need a little extra cheer. (But maybe leave “Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer” off of it.)
10. Create a holly jolly YouTube playlist. In addition to your iTunes or Spotify playlist, make sure you curate your favorite Christmas YouTube videos. (Including music videos from favorite artists, special Christmas messages or TV clips.) 
11. Sleep by the Christmas tree. At least once during December, make sure you and the kiddos pull out some sleeping bags and snooze by the soft glow of the tree. Even better if you fall asleep watching your favorite Christmas movie.
12. Have the kids make some holiday decor. Kids out of school and they’re already bored? Get their hands busy making some decorations for the house! Cut out some snowflakes, make a paper countdown chain… Craft ideas abound on Pinterest, so go wild!
13. Make gingerbread houses. Or eat gingerbread cookies. Which is probably more satisfying for those of us who aren’t architecturally-inclined. 
14. Host a white elephant party with friends. Since Christmas morning is usually reserved for family, get together with your buddies before the big day and host a white elephant gift exchange. Set a spending limit (no more than $20, for example) and see who can cook up the funniest gag gifts.
15. Go to a choir concert. While playlists and radio stations are great, nothing beats live music. Find a choir or musical concert near you and enjoy basking in the spirit of the season with other concert-goers!
16. Be a sub for Santa. At Christmastime (and any time) there are always families in need. If you’re fortunate enough to have enough to share, find a family that could use a little help this holiday season. Bring them meals, gifts, toys, clothes — anything that might make the season brighter. (Your local community most likely has some type of Secret Santa/Sub for Santa program you can participate in if you can’t think of anyone who needs help.)
17. Bake a favorite family recipe. Did your German grandma make her famous pancakes every Christmas morning? Or maybe your mom’s eggnog recipe is second-to-none? Whatever your favorite holiday recipes were as a kid, recreate them as an adult!
18. Try something new. That’s right — traditions don’t always have to be set in stone. Your family might like doing something different every year. Try adopting traditions from other families or other cultures. You’ll broaden your horizons and create great memories!
19. Go sledding. Assuming you live somewhere with snow, take advantage of that fresh powder and take the family sledding! No snow? No problem! Tape some cardboard down on your stairs and do some indoor sledding, Kevin McCallister style. 
20. Do random acts of kindness. Let that generous holiday spirit shine through and find little ways to serve those around you! Doorbell ditch a neighbor with a gift card. Shovel some extra sidewalks. Pay for the car behind you in the drive-thru line. Do some good!
21. Add a new ornament to the tree. Pick out a meaningful ornament for the Christmas tree to commemorate something unique about the past year. Maybe it’s from your favorite vacation spot. Maybe you have a new baby. Or maybe you just take a picture of the family and turn it into an ornament.
22. Buy a new holiday outfit. The tree isn’t the only thing that deserves to look pretty. Get yourself a new outfit for all those holiday parties!
23. Have a wrapping party. Who wants to stay up late on Christmas Eve wrapping all those gifts last minute? Answer: No one. Head off the sleep deprivation by turning your gift wrapping pile into a party! Watch your favorite movie or invite friends over and listen to some Christmas songs while you wrap things up.
24. Read “A Christmas Carol” by the fire. Watching the many different versions of the story is one thing, but there’s nothing like reading the original Dickens novel.
25. Donate toys and clothes. Make room for those incoming gifts by giving away what you don’t need or want anymore. 
26. Track Santa. You truly can Google anything. Even Santa’s whereabouts. Track his sleigh on Christmas Eve with Google’s help!
27. Swap gifts for experiences. Can’t figure out what to get your parents or in-laws (or any other hard-to-shop-for people) for Christmas? Instead of buying gifts, treat them to a fun experience. Go out to dinner, a play or a special Christmas concert. (This takes care of No. 15 on the list, too.)
28. Read the Christmas story in the Bible. You’ll find it in Luke 2. 
29. Visit the cemetery. Whoa — wait — what? Cemeteries? On Christmas? Isn’t that more of a Halloween thing? Well, sure. Most people don’t associate cemeteries with the season of yuletide joy, but Christmas is a great time to remember those who’ve passed on. If you’re missing someone this year (or any year) grab a wreath, put some battery-powered lights around it and leave it on your loved one’s grave. It’s a great way to brighten up the holidays and keep your loved ones close to your mind and heart.
30. Give gifts to those you love. Yes, we know that Christmas is about more than presents — but it’s definitely a fun part of it! Plus, there’s something about reaching the phase of life where you truly do find more joy in giving than receiving. Finding that perfect gift for someone you love and watching their faces light up is truly priceless (to quote that one credit card commercial).

To help you maximize the joy and minimize the stress, here are 8 tips to help you simplify your holiday shopping this year!

Get organized

You know what they say — “if you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” And while it’s a little extreme to say that you’re “failing” the holidays by being disorganized, a little planning will go a long way toward keeping you on the sane side of things. The last thing you want is to have a panic attack and start hyperventilating in the Target bargain aisle on Christmas Eve. (Though we’ve all been there…)

Before you start frantically buying up a storm, here’s what you should do:

1. Make a list. Either write it down on paper or create a new Note on your phone. Who are you shopping for? What ideas do you have for them already? Keep track of it all in one spot and this will prevent you from going hog wild in the stores with every sale that catches your eye.
2. Create a budget. Not everyone likes doing this, but it’s generally a good idea if you don’t want to end up blowing your kids’ braces budget on spontaneous spending. This is also a good way to cut yourself off from overbuying and spending money on things you don’t actually need. (Remember: Just because it’s a good deal, it doesn’t mean you have to buy it. Don’t let FOMO break your bank!)
3. Decide when and where you’ll shop. Do you like the experience of going out into the shopping malls with all the holiday music and decorations? Or do you prefer to shop from the comfort of your own home in your Christmas pjs? Either way is fine, but make a plan for where you’re willing to spend your dollars and cents. (Shopping at a small business might align more with your values than buying up everything at a big online chain.)

Make that list and check it twice!

Shop as early as you can

For some people, “early” means anything before Christmas Eve. For others, it’s doing next year’s shopping on December 26th. We’re going to suggest that “early” in this case means getting as much of it done by December 1st so that you can relish in an entire month of yuletide joy without getting bogged down by frantic errands. Of course, if you like the adrenaline rush that comes with waiting until the last minute, then more power to you!

Bottom line: Decide what you want your goal to be and stick with it. Choose a date that works for you and get your shopping done by then no matter what. (Consider it a Christmas present to yourself.)

Have a 1-gift rule

Maybe it’s because you want the Christmas magic to last as long as possible, or maybe you’re worried that if you don’t buy enough gifts, you’ll ruin your kids’ holiday… but most of us buy too many things to cram under the tree. (Admit it. You’re guilty of this, too.)

You can keep things super simple by creating a 1-gift rule for the family. This could mean that everyone gets just one gift from mom and dad and everyone else, or that the whole family will go in on one special gift for each person. (For example: instead of buying 5 things for $20 each, maybe everyone pools their money to get a nice $100 gift.)  It might mean the unwrapping time is shorter, but the gifts will hopefully last longer!

Or don’t shop at all

We’re not saying you need to Grinch it up and avoid all holiday cheer — just that you don’t necessarily have to spend any money to enjoy the spirit of giving. If money is tight, or if you’re just over the whole shopping thing, there are plenty of other ways you can brighten someone’s season. Offer to be someone’s personal housemaid for the holidays. Help cook all those yummy family meals. Create your own special “_____ of the month club” and deliver monthly goodies over the next year to the recipients. (Maybe you’ll knit them something or make a special flavor of jam. The possibilities are endless!)

Give the same gifts to everyone

At first glance, you might think this sounds like a boring cop-out for your Christmas shopping. But think about it — would you rather buy dozens of individual gifts that you put minimal thought into, or would you rather carefully plan out one amazing present that everyone would be happy with? Obviously, you get better gas mileage out of that last option. 

Here are a few ideas to get your brain going: 

• Gather your favorite family recipes and create a mini cookbook
• Spend one day in the kitchen baking your favorite Christmas treats and give everyone on your list a plate of them
• Create a photo book highlighting your memories over the past year
• Give everyone one of your favorite things — a favorite book, pair of slippers, blanket, scented candle or something cute for their homes

This may work better for groups of people outside of your immediate family (neighbors, teachers, coworkers, etc.). But depending on the gift, your kids might appreciate getting the same presents, too. (Especially if the present is a family trip to Disneyworld or something that will blow their minds.)

Buy presents in bulk

You probably know this already, but buying in bulk is usually much cheaper than trying to track down individual items. Once you’ve decided on the gift you want to give everyone (see the previous tip), track down a good deal online and buy it all in bulk. (That also means fewer opportunities for your packages to get lost in the mail. Win-win!)

Focus on traditions instead of gifts

Let’s face it. Most of us adults can usually buy anything we want with a click of a button. And while gift-giving is fun and it can be a thrill to hunt down the perfect item, sometimes the best gifts are the things that people can’t buy. After all, they do say that experiences make better gifts than things.

Instead of buying up a bunch of individual gifts for your neighbors, maybe ask everyone if they’d rather go in on a yearly Christmas brunch or a neighborhood Sub for Santa. You could even host a “Cookies and Cocoa” night once a year and enjoy your friends’ presence instead of buying your friends presents. (See what we did there?) We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, gratitude is a superpower. Not only is it good for your mental and physical health, but it generally makes you a more pleasant person to be around. (Just think about the people you love to be with most. Probably not big complainers, right?)

Unfortunately, biology has wired us all to look for what’s wrong in life. You can blame your primitive brain for that. (It has something to do with our ancestors trying to survive in the wilderness without being eaten by lions. And tigers. And bears.) 

Well, in this negatively-charged world, we’re on a mission to make things better! Instead of focusing on all the things we lack or wish were better, let’s turn the spotlight on to the good stuff. 

Since we’re just a week away from Thanksgiving, we thought we’d prep you for that annual question: “What are you thankful for?” 

Sure, there’s the obvious stuff. Family. Friends. Health. Chris Hemsworth’s abs. Etcetera. Those are great and all. But this year it might be fun to throw a curveball at the family dinner table and say something like, “I’m grateful for the cat lawyer video because it restored my faith in humanity.”

20 Totally Random Things To Be Grateful For

1. Chapstick that doesn’t leave that yucky film on your lips. You may laugh, but there’s nothing funny about dry, cracked lips that are encased in a waxy coat of “lip balm” that only highlights the lack of moisture. (Actually, it is kind of funny when you think about it...) On the flipside, there’s nothing better than finding that perfect tube of delectably smooth chapstick that leaves your kisser feeling ready to pucker up. Even better when it’s about five times bigger than a normal tube of lip balm. 
2. Heated steering wheels. If you’re going to buy a car, safety features and fuel efficiency are great things to keep in mind. But a heated steering wheel is a true game-changer. 
3. Hilarious product reviews. Most of us prefer to get a little social proof that a product is worth our time and money before we buy it. But sometimes reading less-than-stellar reviews can be more rewarding than any purchase you could make. Just take a gander at Amazon’s collection of funny reviews. 
4. Scooping the remaining cookie dough out of the mixing bowl. They SAY you’re risking salmonella, but they’re really just trying to rob you of one of life’s greatest pleasures. Besides, the risk is part of the fun.
5. Clothes you don’t have to iron. For those of us who make daily wardrobe decisions based on the level of effort required to prep each outfit, non-wrinkle clothes are a gift from the heavens.
6. British accents. Brilliant, innit? Who doesn’t love listening to British accents? (That’s obviously why it’s a voice option on Apple phones.) Harry Potter, Downton Abbey, The Great British Baking Show… what would we do without them?
7. When your favorite song comes on. Aw yeah, that feeling you get when “your jam” pops up on the radio or playlist. There’s nothing like it.
8. Ctrl+Z. Quite possibly the best invention of all time because you can instantly erase mistakes like THAT. (*finger snapping*) If only it worked outside of your computer, too...
9. The brilliant minds of Pinterest. How many years of your life have been saved by someone posting creative ideas you can snag straight off the internet? And free printables, too?? That is altruism at its finest.
10. Dental floss. No, really. Not only is this great for hygiene, but did you know there are LOADS of things you can do with floss that don’t have anything to do with your teeth? You can cut food with it, tie your hair back with it, use it to stitch things up or to hang a picture… It’s like a secret, sometimes-mint-flavored weapon. Brilliant, as the Brits say.
11. Neighbors who decorate for holidays. We could all be Grinching it up each year and never hang a single light or decoration for the rest of our lives. But thank goodness for people who enjoy getting into the holiday spirit and brighten up the world for the rest of us. Life would be darker without them.
12. Ridiculously fluffy animals. I mean, just look at them. How can you not be instantly delighted by that?
13. The fact that the CDC has a webpage dedicated to “Zombie Preparedness.” Thank goodness we will all be prepared should that fateful day finally arrive.
14. Scotland’s official national animal is the unicorn. No joke. Scotland is officially the coolest country.
15. Deodorant. Just imagine what life would be like without it. Do not take this for granted.
16. Tears — they cure pain. Here’s a good reason to let yourself have a good cry every once in a while: it’s good for you! Research shows that tears release feel-good chemicals that relieve emotional and physical pain. Bodies are amazing.
17. It’s impossible for you to do anything wrong tomorrow. ...Because tomorrow is always on its way, isn’t it? (Cue that song from “Annie”!) So next time you’ve got a big presentation or event coming up the next day, take a deep breath and confidently remind yourself, “I can’t do anything wrong tomorrow!” It’s true. You’re not lying. 
18. Clever license plates. It’s hard not to have a healthy appreciation for people who take the time to inject creativity into something as mundane as a license plate, right? You might find it a little easier to forgive someone for cutting you off if their license plate says, “MUAHAHA.” (This is a real life example from Bored Panda.)
19. Happy older couples. Don’t we all secretly yearn for that first-10-minutes-of-Up type of love with our significant others someday? When you see an older couple happily strolling along together hand-in-hand, it’s major #couplegoals. Proof that relationships DO work.
20. People. Yes, even the ones that cut you off on the freeway or kick your seat at the movie theater. Be grateful for PEOPLE. They’re messy, they’re complicated, they're hilarious, they’re unique — and they make the world an interesting place. And if you learned anything from the movie “Castaway,” they make much better companions than volleyballs named “Wilson.”

Admit it — at least one of the things we mentioned above brought a smile to your face, right? Well, now it’s your turn. Make your own list of totally random things to be grateful for — and pay attention to your mood before and after you do it. 

If you’re not at least a *touch* more cheery by the end of this activity, then GIRL, go get yourself a new outfit and try this exercise again! (Sometimes a little retail therapy can encourage a grateful heart. :))

Something magical happens when you start to look for the good things in life. Just like any other muscle in your body, your brain will get stronger and better at doing whatever you practice. The more you seek out the positive, the more you’ll find it.

So… What are you grateful for?

Well, read over that list again and you’ll notice that each of these things can also take a heavy toll on our physical and mental health. (The irony!)

To keep the holidays as happy and healthy as humanly possible, we’ve got a few tips that will help you stay ahead of the curve this year. 

Practice daily gratitude 

Perhaps it’s by divine design that the most indulgent, busy time of the year is preceded by a month focused on thankfulness. (Or, you know, at least a day focused on it, since Christmas seems to start on Nov. 1 for many of us.) The thing about gratitude is that it isn’t just good for your emotional wellbeing — it actually carries some physical benefits as well. According to the Mayo Clinic, practicing gratitude improves sleep, boosts immunity and decreases your risk of disease. That’s something to be grateful for!

So, here’s what this might look like in the midst of all the holiday madness: You could either set a timer for five minutes each day and jot down things you’re grateful for in that gratitude journal of yours. Or, Option #2, you could take things to the next level by intentionally being grateful throughout the whole day. (Running late to work? Well, at least you can be grateful you got there safely! Family members getting on your nerves? Watch “Christmas Vacation” and remind yourself it could be much worse. :))

Have a food plan

Here’s the good news when it comes to that holiday weight gain everyone always talks about: It’s mostly a lie. Contrary to the popular belief that the average person puts on five pounds during the holidays, studies show that it’s actually closer to one pound. (Woot!) But before you go nuts and gorge yourself on all those holiday goodies, it’s important to remember that health is not all about weight. 

Obviously, if you snack on too many sweets, you’re not going to feel as great as you would if you’re balancing things out with more nutritious options. While you don’t need to be a sweets nazi, it’s a good idea to make intentional choices about the food you eat. For example, decide before the annual family gathering that you’re going to sit down and enjoy a nice slice of your mom’s homemade pumpkin pie and not beat yourself up about it. Whatever your indulgences may be, set some healthy limits. 

Stay hydrated

Just because the temperature’s dropped a bit, that doesn’t mean you can’t still get dehydrated in the winter months. In fact, dehydration is more likely in the winter because many people forget to drink enough water. Experts say you still need about half your body weight in fluid ounces each day. And if you’re not in the mood for an ice cold glass of H20 first thing in the morning, try a healthier, heated beverage, like a cup of green or cinnamon tea. Move your body every day

This is a big one on our lists and a theme you’ve probably heard quite often if you follow our founder Brigitte online. (Notice we didn’t even use the word “exercise” for fear of scaring some of you off?) The thing is, you don’t have to be sweating profusely each day to give your body a little kick of endorphins. Simply get up, walk around, or, better yet, turn on your favorite tunes and host an impromptu dance party in the kitchen while you clean up after dinner!

Boost your immune system

With family and friends gathering ‘round in small, enclosed spaces, you can pretty much count on one thing during the holidays: germs. They’re everywhere. And since you can only wash your hands and avoid children sneezing in your face so many times, you might want to give your immune system a little advantage in the sure-to-come battle. You can certainly add some vitamins and supplements into your daily routine, but as the saying goes, “food is medicine.” Some of the best immune-boosting foods are colorful veggies, citrus fruits, salmon, nuts and whole grains.

Remember to laugh

Food may be medicine, but laughter, as they say, is the best medicine. Here’s the thing: Life is funny. It’s full of irony, it’s ridiculous, and it shouldn’t be taken too seriously. Imagine how many tense situations could be diffused by laughing things off? So many things that seem like a big deal in the moment just don’t matter in the long run. Being able to see the humor in any situation not only relieves stress and boosts immunity, but according to Audrey Hepburn, “laughing is the best calorie-burner.” 

Set boundaries

During the holiday season, there’s a magic phrase you can use to help you maintain your health and sanity: “No.” You might be tempted to pack in as many activities, get-togethers, and white elephant gift exchanges as possible, but trying to do everything and please everyone is a surefire recipe for burnout. Be a little picky about the things you devote your time to this season in particular — and don’t forget to leave plenty of space open in your schedule to just sit back and “chillax” when you need to.

Don’t forget that beauty rest

It seems like the more obvious something is, the easier it is to overlook. When it comes to getting enough sleep, most of us are like, “yeah, yeah, yeah, I know I need to do that.” And then we promptly click the “Next Episode” button on Netflix until we pass out on the couch at 2 a.m. It’ll take some discipline, but consistently getting some good rest will pay out in huge dividends later. We’ve got some tips to help you catch that precious beauty sleep in case you need a little help.

Connect with friends and family

As human beings, we need each other. And you don’t have to wait for an invitation to a holiday party to connect with others. If you’re having a bad day, whip out your phone and text an old friend. FaceTime your sister who lives across the country. Drop off a treat to a neighbor on a whim. We promise this will brighten things up!

Be kind to yourself

Think about this: Would you talk to anyone else the same way you talk to yourself when you make mistakes? Yeah, we didn’t think so. The truth is, you’re not going to do everything right. You may not have the picture-perfect Thanksgiving feast. You might eat too many goodies at that family party. You’ll probably lose your cool with your kids at least once (or, you know, multiple times) during “the most wonderful time of the year.” Why? Because you’re human. We all do it. 

So, as a Christmas gift to yourself this year, be a little more patient with that person in the mirror. When you don’t show up as your best self, take a deep breath, pat yourself on the face and say, “It’s all right. I’ve got this.” You can’t hate yourself into a happier, healthier life. Give yourself a little compassion and grace — especially during this crazy season — and you’ll see much better results.

Start a neighborhood tradition

Play these Halloween games

Can we all agree that bobbing for apples is kind of a gross concept (especially while we’re all trying to limit our exposure to germs)? Instead, try these games at home with your family and friends:

Heads Up Halloween

Here’s a super-duper easy one you can throw together with a few post-it notes. Write down one Halloween-themed word on each post-it (you know: spider, witch, vampire, Freddy Krueger, etc.). Mix up the post-its, throw them in a hat, and have everyone choose one (without looking) and stick it to their forehead. Each person asks questions to figure out what their word is.

Ghost in the Graveyard

A classic night game you probably grew up with, Ghost in the Graveyard is a good one to resurrect on Halloween! It’s like hide-and-go-seek — but backwards. You start with a safe spot (the “base”) and then only one person (the “ghost”) hides and the rest of the group tries to find them. Once someone spots the “ghost,” they yell, “Ghost in the graveyard!” and everyone has to run back to the base before the “ghost” tags them. Whoever gets tagged is the next ghost!

Glow Stick frisbee

There’s no end to the fun you can have when you’ve got a handful of glow sticks on hand! Glow stick frisbee is just one idea. Create a circle out of glow sticks and tape them to a frisbee. Have everyone wear glow sticks around their neck and play a game of glow stick ultimate frisbee outside. (Careful not to hit anyone in the face!

Truth or Scare 

Put a Halloween spin on your favorite sleepover game by turning “Truth or Dare” into “Truth or Scare.” (E.g. “What movie made you scream out loud?” or “Play dead until your next turn.”) The best part is that this website has already done the work for you, so you don’t have to come up with the questions!

Don’t Eat Pete!

Try reverse trick-or-treating

Who says you can’t do a little good on the scariest night of the year? If you’re a little candied-out, you can try going reverse trick-or-treating with the family, which is an idea that’s become increasingly popular in recent years. How it works is simple: Instead of going around and asking for candy, you take treats to other people. Maybe it’s some homemade cupcakes or your favorite store bought goods — it doesn’t matter! You can still dress up in costumes, too. Just try to hit the houses that could use a little extra love on the spooky holiday. (Elderly couples and widows will probably appreciate it!)

Take a drive to see the decorations

Christmas isn’t the only time of the year when you can get out and see the lights. Plenty of people get really into Halloween — and they might be in your own neighborhood! Hop in the car with the kids, crank up some Halloween tunes, and drive around to find the best sights. You can even turn it into a game by asking who can find the most pumpkins, witches, skeletons, etc.

Remember the good old days of radio when people sat on a rug on the floor and turned the dial to whatever special they wanted to catch on the airwaves? (Yeah, we don’t either.) Well, this could be a fun way to throw it back to those olden days: listen to a scary story while you’re out for a drive or before you put the kids to bed. Luckily, we don’t have to worry about finding the right station on the radio because these days we’ve got YouTube! Search “scary stories for kids” and you’ll have a plethora of terrifying tales to choose from! (But not TOO terrifying.)

Now, there are some items on this list that are your classic fall fashion faves (you can’t have fall without boots, amiright?) but some things here might surprise you. Who knows? Maybe you’ll find your new favorite fall accessory that you never thought of before. 

Bright colors

We’re going to start things off with something you might not typically expect for this time of the year, yet it’s definitely trending right now: bright colors. (Think: 80s aerobics Barbie.) Maybe it’s because we all want to inject a little more joy into our hum-drum lives as we head into some colder weather, or maybe it’s because bright colors are just plain fun. Whatever the reason for the color trend comeback, this is one you can have some fun with. According to Marie Claire, anything fuschia is really “in” right now. But no matter what accessories you reach for this fall, don’t be afraid to try out something bright and bold!

Big bold earrings

Coming hot off the heels of the last one, big bold earrings are the perfect compliment to those bright colors you’ll be donning! Once again, this look seems to be making a statement. And that statement is: “Don’t mess with me. Even my ears are strong.” Just kidding. But they do look strong and confident, which isn’t a bad look to go for. 

Stackable or layered jewelry

Mmmm layers… Good in cakes, good in jewelry. Speaking of which, the layered jewelry look is an easy way to “have your cake and eat it, too” if you just can’t decide between one necklace and the next. This trend has been hot for a while now, and it doesn’t seem like it’s leaving anytime soon. Layered necklaces, stackable rings -- it’s safe to say that less is no longer more. Wearing complex jewelry is a great way to mix things up with an otherwise drab outfit or to zazz up an already fabulous one. 

Herringbone jewelry

If you’re going for a more refined, elegant look, you might want to hop on the herringbone jewelry bandwagon. The delicate, flat rectangular links woven together are meant to lay flat so as to not kink the jewelry, so maybe don’t take this one out for your morning jog. But it’ll sure make you stun your significant other on your fancy date night! Grab a herringbone necklace and pair it with a similar bracelet and you just might land a guest role in the next season of “The Crown.”

Leather totes 

Brace yourself for the forthcoming cheesy pun… This next accessory is totes adorbs. (We did warn you.) Fall fashion has long been dominated by all things leather, and aside from completing your outfit, a good leather tote makes life on-the-go a heck of a lot easier. What girl couldn’t use a nice, durable, low-maintenance oversized bag to dump all her belongings into haphazardly? It’s kind of like when company is coming over and you stuff everything in the closet (which we’ve *cough* never done...). Leather totes can store all your valuables quickly and conveniently without any need for meticulous organization. Plus they look ab-fab. 

Concho belts 

If the internet is telling the truth, concho belts derive from the Spanish word “concha,” which means “seashell.” But rather than seashells, concho belts typically feature round or rectangular metal pendants that are spaced out evenly. The best thing about these types of belts is that they’re massively versatile and add a great accent to any outfit. Wear them with your jeans, over a dress, or even with a button-up blouse. 

Felt fedoras

In case you don’t have an Instagram account or simply haven’t looked at any pictures of humans in the last couple of years, you should know that felt fedoras and flat-brimmed hats are hotter than habanero salsa right now. If you haven’t tried out the trend yet, it’s definitely time to see what the fuss is all about.

Oversized sunglasses

Once upon a time, oversized sunglasses were only used by Cheeto-eating celebrities who were trying to maintain a low profile. But no longer! Big shades are all the rage these days and right now it’s all about the giant square-shaped, goggley ones. (You read that correctly. Goggle-y. Not googley. As in goggles.) They’re big, they’re bold, and they might just be calling your name!

Gorgeous scarves

You can’t have a complete set of fall accessories if it doesn’t include a scarf or two. Yes, that includes the good old-fashioned knitted ones your grandma made, but you should also check out the latest silky scarf styles. Once again, this is an accessory that both looks great and serves the purpose of keeping you warm in that crisp, cool air, depending on how you wear it. Tie one around your neck for a chic bandana, or wear it in your hair to dress up that ponytail.

Western boots

As we mentioned previously, boots are the kings of fall fashion accessories. The only question is what style of boots to get? Uggs? Moon boots? Classic leather? Well, as it turns out, western/cowgirl style boots are really having a moment. So, once you’ve got that scarf bandana in place, complete the look with some cute western boots. You’ll be ready to hit up all those pumpkin patches, hay rides, and fall festivals in style!

It was a night to remember… a fun-filled, fashion fest of female friends (and a few fellas, too). It was SexyModest’s pop-up shop/Girls Night Out. And it was a party unlike any other...

Meet the Shamy Family

Why travel several miles to shop in person for things you can easily buy online, you ask? Because it’s not often that you get to meet your clothing designer face-to-face and chat it up! Without trying to butter up the boss here, it’s safe to say that one of the best things about the GNO was getting to meet Brigitte, Jason, and their girls. (Everyone in the family was there except for 2-year-old Berkeley, who, unfortunately, had a previous commitment with a crib and a very soft blankie.) 

Though it’s easy to feel like you already know them if you follow them online, it’s even better when you realize that they’re just as warm and friendly in real life. Brig and Jase made a point to mix and mingle with as many visitors as possible, only pausing to announce some giveaways and snap a few photos and selfies with attendees. Meanwhile, their girls helped run the PB&K bath bomb booth (which you’ve definitely gotta try, if you haven’t already) and cheerfully greeted the online community of followers who’ve been watching them grow up. (Which is much less creepy than it sounds...)

Really, on a Friday night when they could be hanging out with friends, watching movies, or doing almost anything else, it’s impressive that the Shamy girls chose to spend the whole evening supporting their mom and dad. Which makes total sense — family has been the hallmark of the SexyModest business all these years. You feel — and are treated — like family yourself when you show up to an event like this!

All the SexyModest things — at HUGE discounts

Ladies, if you were itching to get your hands on ALLLLLLLL the SexyModest inventory, then this pop-up shop was the stuff of dreams! Every available piece from the Brigitte Brianna Collection was on full display, including her cosmetics line and newly launched Scrubsluxe scrubs. You could try on anything and everything to your heart’s content, even the new releases. (Those BB Active Leggings truly are buttery soft, BTW. And the Splendor Dress? Even more gorgeous in person! Just in case you were wondering.)

The best part was that the regular prices were slashed with crazy markdowns that only come once in a blue moon (or in this case, once in a pop-up shop/GNO). If you missed it, oh boy… do NOT miss the next one! You won’t be sorry.

As you can imagine, it takes a village to pull something like this together, and Brigitte and Jason are confident they’ve got the best team in town. In a big thank you post on Instagram, Brig said it best:

“For some moments in life there just aren’t words. It’s hard to describe feelings, relationships, teamwork, your tribe, the people who show up for you. And I could never begin to describe the conversations had and the lives that have touched us. And my rockstar team that worked their guts out getting this ready and putting on one heck of a party. My hubby and kids that worked beside me last night and that help me everyday to juggle our life. And the vendors that came…my favorite people and businesses. People that not only do I love their products but they are easy to love and support because they work their businesses to show they love their clients. And the biggest thank you to my Heavenly Father for allowing me to share my passion and heart and that I get to work and be a mommy and to work with my best friend everyday is such a gift.”

And of course, Brig had to thank all of YOU — whether you were able to join the event or not.

“You remind me that’s it’s so much more than just clothing we share together. We strive to make women’s lives better we all that we do and ironically, because of you, I feel the role is reversed.”
