Everything about the USA Breedlove oozes a much higher level of workmanship and refinement.

Here, we have a NOS (new old stock) USA Breedlove Premier D25 with highly figured Mahogany back/sides. The tone is clear and resonant with long-ringing sustain and flowing harmonic overtones. Bass response gives a solid thump when digged in and makes it a flatpicker or bluegrass player's dream guitar. The tonal complexity when playing individual notes is quite different from that of a Goodall tone and it handles fingerstyle very well too. Subtle nuances can be coaxed effortlessly out of the D25, even though it is a dread body. Anyways, here are some updates...

1) I will be having single Elixir strings for sale soon. I'm currently consolidating my available stocks before listing them here. This is a good chance to get some spare strings which may tend to break easily for those using Elixir strings.

2) The Huss & Dalton MJC just sold to Jonathan Wong from Church Of Singapore (Balestier).

3) I have got a Northwood MJ80V, USA Breedlove Premier D25 and Goodall dread in the works. So do watch our blog for more exciting updates over the next 1-2 weeks.

4) Lastly, please feel free to let me know your thoughts or requests (acoustic guitar related) for this blog.

Thanks for the support guys! =)

Cheers
Samuel

USA Breedlove Fusion (sharp cutaway)

Here's our third USA Breedlove, a used Breedlove Fusion with sharp cutaway.

Brand new retails for USD$3729.

Yours for only S$3200.

Specs:

Solid Red Cedar top

Solid Mahogany Back and Sides

Black Binding w/ bwbwb purfling

Abalone Rosette

Ebony "Winged" Bridge with J.L.D. He's none other than Canadian-based luthier John Mcquarrie, who has trained extensively under Jean Larrivee. He left Larrivee to start Northwood Guitars in 1996 so he has already accumulated more than a decade of experience.

John typically only uses Englemann Spruce for his guitars, and surprisingly it handles both strumming and fingerstyle VERY well. Englemann Spruce usually tends to break up under heavy strumming but not in this case for the MJ80. It tackles aggressive strumming with much aplomb. Fingerstyle-wise, it is very responsive and handles from light to heavy touches superbly. Tone-wise, every note "blooms" with much overtones (due to the Englemann Spruce) but there is still much clarity and definition. Bass response is deep without being boomy and the mids are buttery with crystal clear highs. Neck is a very comfortable slim C-shaped profile and will appeal to most people, very fast and playable.

Looks-wise, the Englemann top is one of the whitest and creamiest tops I have ever seen.
There is also LOTS of silking on the top and the rosewood back/sides have got to be one of the most eye-catching pieces I have ever seen. Very straight-grained with nice dark reddish-brown hues.

Saddle has been changed to FMI by our very own Jarvis, who also did a fantastic job setting it up with medium-low action.

Frets have been redressed by Mike Chen of Standard Value. When the guitar first came, there was a high fret at the 14th fret causing some buzzing at the higher positions. However, Mike has done a great and very clean job of redressing the affected frets and the guitar now plays without any buzz up and down the entire neck.

Brand new is USD$3099 after discount.
Asking for only S$3400.

Specs:
Top: Englemann Spruce
Back/sides: East Indian Rosewood
Ivoroid bound Rosewood headstock overlay with Paua Abalone logo inlay
Ivoroid bound Ebony fretboard with inlays
Rosewood body binding with B/W/B purfling
Herringbone binding on centre of back
Size: Mini-jumbo
Electronics: None
Nut-width: 1 3/4"
Tuners: Schallers chrome
OHSC case included

Please click here for more high-res pics.

Email to vjcs20@gmail.com if you are interested.

Goodall Aloha Koa Grand Concert

Here is our second Goodall, an Aloha Grand Concert with amazing Koa back & sides. This is Goodall's entry level guitar without bling bling but the tone is still very rich and full typical of the Goodall tone. Very comfortable Grand Concert body shape but volume and projection is as loud as most dreadnoughts. The highly figured Koa back/sides and headstock are really a sight to behold. Comes installed with a K&K Mini pickup and Gotoh tuners.

Usual price is USD$3200 with pickup.
Our special price is S$3900 only.

Specs:
Top: Sitka Spruce
Back/Sides: Highly figured Koa
Flamed Koa headstock with Pearl logo
Pheasant wood fingerboard
Black fibre binding
Pearl soundhole rosette
Size: Grand Concert
Electronics: K&K Mini
Nut width: 1 3/4"
Tuners: Chrome Gotoh minis with 18:1 ratio
OHSC case included with crushed velvet interior

Click here for more high-res pics.

Pls email to vjcs20@gmail.com if you are interested.

USA Breedlove Revival DR

Finally, our first made-in-USA Breedlove. :p

This is Breedlove's take on the traditional dreadnought. To me, this compares very favorably to Martin's D-28 in all aspects from tone to playability. The low-end is very present on this dread, tight but not overly boomy with great volume and projection. Highs are not sacrificed at all. For fans of the more traditional vintage tone, you will love this guitar. The neck is extremely comfortable and fast.

Even though it's my first time trying the Grover 18:1 Sta-Tite open-back tuners, I have to say I'm extremely impressed with its rock-stable tuning capabilities and of course, the classy look it imparts to the guitar. The hand-rubbed semi-gloss finish is impeccable and allows lots of the grain to show through. Check out the high-res pics of the rosewood grains on the DR.

I'll let the photos do the rest of the talking. :D

Retail is USD$2699.
Selling for S$2500 only.

Specs:
Solid Sitka Spruce Top and Braces (Advanced and Scalloped “Pre-War” X-Bracing)
Solid Select Rosewood Back and Sides
Ivoroid Body Binding
Multi-ply bwb Rosette
14 Fret Honduran Mahogany Neck
Ebony Fingerboard
Pearl Dot Position Markers
Rosewood Headstock Overlay
Grover 18:1 Sta-Tite Vintage Chrome Tuners
Vintage Toner Stain
Hand Rubbed Semi-Gloss Finish
Size: Dreadnought
Nut width: 1 3/4"
Electronics: Fishman Matrix
Original Deluxe Breedlove Arch Top Hardcase with crushed velvet interior

Click here for more high-res pics.

Email me at vjcs20@gmail.com if you are interested.

Upcoming guitars...

Hi guys,

Just to let you guys know what's coming along the way.
A couple of Goodalls (various shapes and woods), a couple of USA Breedloves (Yes, USA Breedloves!! What brand is that?!?" some of you may ask...

Back when acoustic guitars were completely hand made by craftsman working their passion into each guitar, they had a certain beauty and character that has definitely spanned the test of time. Many of these beauties remain today as legends of tone and value. The prospect of offering a guitar that is totally built in the old school, hand made tradition, excites T.J. Baden who is very pleased to announce just such a guitar. T.J. Baden, who formerly headed sales and marketing for Taylor guitars, has introduced a distinctive new line of acoustic guitars under the Baden brand. Everything about the new Baden guitars, from their design and ornamentation to their country of origin, is distinctive. All of the instruments are solid wood and boast a spare, elegant design characterized by subtle wood binding and rosettes. The new Baden guitars are handcrafted at the Ayers factory in Viet Nam. At the core of the operation are six French-trained master luthiers. While most high-end acoustic guitars made in the U.S. are the product of automation and handwork, instruments coming out of the Ayers plant are hand built from start to finish. Every instrument has its own soul and is unique.

Check out this review from Guitar World and this review from Acoustic Guitar Magazine.

This is probably the very first Baden guitar in Singapore. Do not be mistaken by its plain looks. Baden has chosen to go for a more spartan look on its guitars to differentiate themselves from other brands. From the rosewood binding to the rosewood soundhole binding and inlay, Baden has chosen top-notch quality woods to adorn this 6-string wooden instrument. The Sitka Spruce top is creamy-white (akin to Englemann spruce) with lots of silking while the East Indian Rosewood back/sides have lots of variations in color tones with striping patterns which I have never seen before on rosewood, almost like that of striped ebony or macassar ebony. There may not be any fanciful abalone or bling bling but the woods used on the guitar are absolutely gorgeous looking. Even the name on the headstock is not inlayed but what I believe to be a laser-etching process. At the top of the soundhole is a small triangular inlay which is a very subtle but elegant touch to the entire look of the guitar.

Design-wise, Baden has redesigned the 'A' or Auditorium shape of the guitar to incorporate a cutaway without having a cutaway (see the pics to know what I mean). Overall, I think this imparts a very sexy and unique shape to the guitar that is both asthetically pleasing and functional at the same time. The hand-rubbed mahogany neck is extremely comfortable, one of the most comfortable necks I have ever played. It's neither too slim nor too chunky, but it just fits nicely in between. Asian hands will like the feel of this neck. Tone-wise, this guitar will definitely blow guitars that are twice its price out of the waters. It has a deep growling bass reminiscent of that of the Taylor GS series, but with more oomph and punch. The mids are also more articulate (not thin) with pleasing trebles that ring clearly. Sustain and projection are definitely at the upper end of guitars within this price range.

Brand new is USD$2499 after discount.
Our special price: S$2400 only.

Specs:
Top: Sitka Spruce
Back/Sides: Solid East Indian Rosewood
Rosewood fingerboard
Rosewood binding on body and soundhole
Size: Grand Auditorium with cutaway
Electronics: None
Nut width: 1 3/4"
Tuners: Gold tuners with ebony buttons
OHSC case included

Click here for more high-res pics!!

Email me at vjcs20@gmail.com This will be a one-time offer for a brand new CA guitar. I'm not intending to bring in CA guitars to compete with Guitar Gallery.

The 8 series is CA's highest-end series with a high gloss finish revealing the 3-D carbon weaving and finished in the amazing looking carbon burst. Comes with stainless steel frets (which practically means no more re-frets needed), carbon fingerboard and bridge, carbon nut and saddle, Gotoh 503 tuners with 18:1 ratio, and LR Baggs iMix onboard pickup system. I tried the pickup system and going with either 100% element or even 100% iBeam, both sounded really incredible. But when you mix both pickups together, that's where you really get the best of both worlds.

The body is AMAZINGLY thin at barely 3 inches, but the bass response from this little guy is unbelievable. You will do a double-take when you hear it. The tone sounds really big and powerful with clear ringing mids and highs and a thumping low-end. And most importantly, the guitar feels SOOOO very comfortable in your hands. There is no heel, meaning you get full access to the higher frets via the cutaway.

Brand new is USD$2699 after discount (retail USD$2998).
Our one-off special price: S$2950 only!
At this price, it's gonna disappear real quick.

Specs:
Top & back/sides: Carbon fibre
Carbon fingerboard with side dots and shell top dots
Stainless steel frets
Carbon nut and saddle
Tuners: Gotoh 503 with 18:1 ratio and black tuner buttons
Agoya shell soundhole rosette
Nut width: 1 7/8"
Electronics: Stereo LR Baggs iMix Dual Source pickup system consisting of Element UST & Info taken from here.

All Breedlove Custom Shop steel-string guitars (except for the Revival Series), Pro Series and Atlas Series guitars use the JLD Bridge Truss system. This device is a cantilevered truss that helps to counterbalance string tension at the bridge, creating a relaxed top and improved structural integrity. This allows us to brace our tops in a very progressive way, with a focus on realizing the full acoustic potential of the top. A relaxed top provides maximal wavelength response, and a synergy is created by our use of a graduated top thickness, balanced scalloped bracing, and a pinless bridge in combination with the bridge truss system. This gives our guitars the distinctive and highly dynamic “Breedlove Sound”, with a piano-like bass and a remarkably well-balanced tone suitable for a broad variety of musical styles.

Breedlove AD25/SR Plus

SOLD!!!

Breedlove AD25/SR Plus

Very rarely does a guitar blow me away with both its price and performance. The Breedlove AD25/SR Plus is one such guitar. =)

I still remember I had my first experience with Breedlove in 2002. I had walked into Living Strings (which was then situated in Bras Brasah) and tested out an AC25/SR Plus. I was immediately floored by how rich and powerful the guitar sounded. It had the clear highs and mids of a Taylor, but the powerful deep low-end of a Martin. And the neck was very slim and fast and felt even more comfortable in my hands than a Taylor. I left the place thinking to myself, "I NEED a Breedlove..." At that point of time, my current guitar was an Epiphone PR-5E Artist and the Breedlove Atlas was a few levels better than what I had.

Doing my research online, I found out that Breedlove is a guitar company situated in Oregon, USA. The typical prices for Breedlove guitars start from USD$2500 onwards. The Atlas is their entry-level series made in Cort's factory in Korea but quality-inspected in their US factory with the same high standards as the Made-in-US Breedloves.

I bought an AD25/SR Plus (Solid spruce top with solid East Indian Rosewood back) in 2003 and it was my main guitar for more than 4 years. It played very well and sounded very nice, both plugged-in and unplugged. I received many compliments on its tone and many commented how the guitar sounded like the best of Martin and Taylor combined together. I subsequently sold it in 2006.

Here we have 2 Breedlove AD25/SR Plus (belonging to 2 of my friends). The Plus package adds very nice upgrades like abalone inlays on the fretboard, fine purfling rings to the abalone rosette and abalone purfling to the perimeter of the top. This makes the AD25/SR Plus look like a guitar that costs more than twice its price. And make no mistake, it doesn't just look like one but it also sounds like a guitar costing more than twice its price (in fact, I think it sounds even better than many guitars costing 3 times its price).

Specs:
Top Wood: Solid Sitka Spruce
Back/Sides: Solid Rosewood back with laminated sides
Rosewood fretboard with Diamond Inlays
Abalone purfling and rosette
Ivoroid binding on fingerboard and body
Size: Dreadnought with cutaway
Electronics: Fishman Classic 4T with built-in tuner
Nut Width: 1 11/16”
Tuners: Gold Grovers

Check out more high res pics here

Huss & Dalton Technical Info

Here are some excerpts taken from the Huss & Dalton website. It's interesting to note that they use only Adirondack spruce for their braces, and that their guitar tops are radiused to 25' for increased strength and mid-range boost. Do check out their website for more info on the different guitar models available. There will definitely be more H&D guitars coming our way!

Huss & Dalton guitars feature two distinct construction styles. On all of our standard series models, we employ the use of a 25' radius built into the guitar top, which is achieved by milling an arch into the braces and preparing the sides with the same radius to accept the soundboard. A positive by-product of the radiused soundboard design, besides it’s load-bearing properties, is a boost in the mid-range. This helps our guitars to have a more balanced tonal quality than traditional designs. Our Traditional series features the same 25' radius prepared into the braces, but the sides are left flat for a more traditional build style. This build style tends to have a more traditional tonal character, emphasizing a bit more bass.

All Huss & Dalton guitars are braced with hand split Appalachian Red Spruce, which has a greater strength-to-weight ratio than other brace woods.

All bridge plates are made from Honduras Rosewood, selected for its superior tonal properties and resistance to string ball wear.

We use AAA grade top woods, which are checked individually for load bearing abilities, and are thickness sanded to achieve the best balance of strength and flexibility.

We use bone nuts on all of our instruments and fully compensated 1/8” bone saddles on all of our guitar models. We then compensate the scale of every string to make our intonation as close as possible to perfect.

Our necks are quarter-sawn Honduran Mahogany, Maple, Walnut, or Spanish Cedar, and all employ the use of a steel reinforced truss rod. Each neck is carved to a sleek comfortable feel, and we can custom shape and size your neck to fit your needs.

All fingerboards are Ebony, a beautiful, dense wood that is resistant to wear. We bind every fingerboard on every guitar model. Those needing an unbound look are bound in Ebony. Binding all fingerboards means no fret- ends are seen or felt. In addition, finish tends to chip away at the fret-ends on unbound boards.

Besides technical improvements to the design of our instruments, we have made aesthetic improvements as well. Most of the instruments in our line feature solid wood bindings and are tastefully appointed with shell inlays. All of our guitars feature the use of the finest quarter-sawn woods available.

All Huss & Dalton instruments are priced with a hard shell case.

Huss & Dalton MJC (S$4200)

SOLD!!

Huss & Dalton MJC (S$4200)

Here is our third guitar from Huss & Dalton. Most of you would probably not have heard of them as they are relatively unknown in our region. However, they are a small-shop builder ranked amongst brands like Goodall, Collings and Santa Cruz. Their production is about 20-25 guitars per month, so every guitar is pain-stakingly crafted, tuned and setup for the finest possible playing experience.

As this is my first contact with guitars from H&D, I have to say that I was absolutely blown away by the MJC (mini-jumbo cutaway). Everything about this guitar speaks of elegance and class. Check out the herringbone purfling on the top and soundhole rosette. The rosewood binding on the fingerboard and body complements the understated look of this guitar. And the stingray inlays on the fingerboard are both eye-catching but yet so subtle. The tweed TKL hardcase with crushed velvet interior is sooo sexy (even my wife commented that it looks really nice).

The first strum of the guitar is what hits you the most - Full and rich sounding notes that blend and resonate so strongly within the guitar without sacrificing note separation. The tone has a vintage vibe but much more overtones and incredible balance, not forgetting a sweetness and sustain that rings on and on. Projection and volume is loud and clear. The neck is also very similar to a Taylor, slim and fast, so Taylor fans will love the neck and low action. All in all, I have to say that this H&D MJC is my fav guitar so far, with a tone to die for and very easily playable Taylorish neck.

IMHO, the H&D has the tone of a Goodall but the advantage of a slimmer and Taylorish neck, and most importantly, it's more affordable than a Goodall.

This H&D MJC will cost USD$4000 (after discount) brand new.
Our special price is only S$4200.

Specs:
Top: Sitka Spruce
Back/Sides: East Indian Rosewood
Ebony fretboard with Stingray inlays
Herringbone purfling and rosette
Rosewood binding on fingerboard and body
Size: Mini-jumbo with soft cutaway
Electronics: Lace magnetic passive pickup
Nut width: 1 3/4"
Tuners: Gold H&D with ebony buttons
Condition: Mint
OHSC included
Transparent pickguard included

Check out more high res pics here

Email to vjcs20@gmail.com if you are interested.

<link rel="related" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/23127881@N07/sets/72157604528400989/" title="Huss &
