Toyota has unveiled the third consecutive facelift of the eight-generation Hilux in Australia. Toyota’s best-selling midsize pickup benefits from a series of styling upgrades, enhanced technology equipment, and the addition of 48-Volt technology to the 2.8-liter turbodiesel.

The automaker is implementing these changes with the aim of maintaining its competitiveness against its primary rival, the Ford Ranger. The Blue Oval’s mid-size pickup truck claimed the title of Australia’s top-selling vehicle last year after a closely contested battle between the two models.

Unlike the Japanese- and European-spec versions of the 2024 Toyota Hilux which look virtually identical to their predecessors, the Australian model introduces a redesigned face. The bumper is more sculpted than before, with a new octagonal grille flanked by revised intakes and an aluminum-style skid plate. The rest of the bodywork is carried over from the outgoing Hilux but the tailgate now comes with dampers for easier operation.

Depending on the trim, the grille and bumper have different finishes. The entry-level WorkMate features a black honeycomb mesh grille, the SR adds a silver-colored lower bumper finish, while the SR5 features a black upper grille, dark-tinted LEDs and gloss-black accents (fog light bezels, mirror caps, door handles). Toyota didn’t publish photos of the high-spec Rogue and the performance-focused GR Sport grades which will most likely retain their existing bodykits.

Mild Electrification Without Hybrid Badges

The highlight of the 2024 MY is the addition of the 48V technology to the 2.8-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel which comes standard in Rogue and SR5 trims and is optional for the 4×4 SR. Unlike other automakers, Toyota doesn’t use the hybrid term or emblems to describe mild-hybrids, reserving the for self-charging and plug-in hybrid setups.

The system comprises a belt-driven electric motor/generator, a small lithium battery, and a DC/DC converter, enabling a stop/start system. Toyota says that electrification improves fuel economy by 6-10% depending on the trim, while reducing noise, vibration, and harshness.

The mildly electrified 2.8-liter turbodiesel produces the same 203 hp (150 kW / 204 PS) and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) of torque. Toyota Australia didn’t go into details about the contribution of the 48V tech in terms of power and torque, but in the EU-spec model it adds up to 16 hp (12 kW / 16 PS) and 65 Nm (48 lb-ft). All mild-hybrid grades of the Hilux also come standard with the Multi-Terrain Select system offering six driving modes for different types of terrains.

Other powertrain options in the Hilux range include the existing non-electrified 2.8-liter and 2.4-litre diesels, as well as the 2.7-liter gasoline motor which are offered with a choice of manual or automatic transmissions in 4×2 and 4×4 guises.

Enhanced Equipment, Slightly Increased Prices

In terms of equipment, all SR grades gain two front and four rear parking sensors, while those with the 48-Volt system gain dual-zone automatic climate control, smart entry/start, auto power windows, and carpet floor mats. Furthermore, the higher-spec SR5, Rogue, and GR Sport trims now come with a wireless charging pad and two rear USB-C ports.

The updated Toyota Hilux will arrive to Australian showrooms in March 2024. As reported by Drive, pricing starts from AU$26,475 (US$17,277) for the entry-level Hilux Workmate 4×2 single-cab model, and climbs to AU$74,310 (US$48,495) for the flagship Hilux GR Sport 4×4 dual-cab version. More importantly, the trims that benefit from the addition of the 48-Volt mild-hybrid system cost between AU$590-1,605 (US$385-1,047) more compared to their non-electrified predecessors from last year.

We don’t know if the updates introduced by the AU-spec Toyota Hilux will find their way to other markets, since the current generation of the pickup is in its twilight years. As a refresher, the eight-gen Hilux debuted in 2015 and received facelifts in 2017 and in 2020 before the 2024 update. The latter will most likely be the last one as an all-new generation is expected to arrive sometime in the next few years.

The ADAM’s Electrical Power Steering (EPS) includes a dedicated CITY mode which at the flick of a switch increases power assistance at lower speeds - particularly useful for maneuvering. The comprehensive ESP of the latest generation is also standard in all ADAMS and comes complete with many useful sub-functions such as Hill Start Assist.

A high level of passive safety is ensured by an ultra-rigid passenger cell mainly made from high-strength steel. This is complemented by front, side and head curtain airbags as well as Dual Seat Belt Pre-tensioners at the front seats which offer additional knee and leg protection. Other safety features include two sets of ISOFIX points plus top tethers in order to easily and safely attach child seats on the 50:50 split foldable rear bench.

Despite past recalls, your Fisker Karma may still be trying to set you on fire. Fisker is recalling 19 Karmas for improperly-mounted hose clamps, just like they did last year.

As you heard last December when Fisker recalled 239 Karmas, improperly-positioned hose clamps could allow coolant to leak into the battery compartment, causing an electrical short and possibly a fire.

According to the company there have been no recorded incidents of these hose clamps actually starting fires (though we're curious what caused this), but given this recall, the last recall over hose clamps, and the Fisker battery recall in January, the Karma is getting a pretty bad reputation.

The QASHQAI is same size as a Ford Focus yet smaller than a typical compact SUV, and promises the driving comfort and fun of the former with the ability and practicality of the latter.

Distinctive styling

Its distinctive styling is a marriage of the sleek shape of a passenger car with the strength of a 4x4 to create something fresh and different in the new car market.

Named after a desert-dwelling nomadic tribe living near the Zagros mountains in South Western Iran, QASHQAI (say it Kash-Kai) should be seen as an 'Urban Nomad', says Design Director at Nissan Design Europe, Stephane Schwarz.

"It is a car of contrasts for a world of contrasts," he says. "It is tough and compact for the city but sleek and agile for journeys away from the town. It reflects our personalities, our imagination."

Although initial design concepts started in Japan, most of QASHQAI's design and development work has been undertaken in Europe, notably at Nissan Design Europe in London and at Nissan Technical Centre Europe (NTCE) in Cranfield also in the UK. It will be built at Sunderland in Nissan's award-winning plant in the North East of England. Full production is due to start towards the end of 2006, with sales starting early in 2007.

QASHQAI's dynamic exterior is matched by a asymetric interior, providing a focused cockpit environment for the driver and a relaxing space for the occupants. High seating positions provide the sense of security normally found in an SUV, yet QASHQAI is a more dynamic performer with the accelerative and handling capabilities of a hatchback.

Four engines

QASHQAI offers a choice of two and four-wheel drive and no fewer than four engines, two diesel and two petrol. The engine range starts with a 1.6-litre 115PS (84kW) petrol and 1.5 dCi diesel developing 106PS (78kW). A pair of petrol and diesel 2.0-litre engines develop 140PS (103kW) and 150PS (110kW) respectively.

Five and six-speed manual transmissions, six-speed automatic and an advanced CVT gearbox are available.

The carefully conceived interior is crammed with intelligent storage solutions for maximum functionality and flexibility, while - as is to be expected from a Nissan - only features that make a difference, rather than technology for technology's sake, can be found either as standard or on the options list. These include a large panoramic glass roof, automatic headlights and wipers, satellite navigation, reversing camera and Bluetooth connectivity for mobile phones.

Nissan's highly praised electronically controlled ALL-MODE 4x4 system - as pioneered in X-TRAIL - is available on 2.0-litre versions. Despite having greater ground clearance than an ordinary hatchback, however, QASHQAI's four-wheel drive is there to provide greater traction for safer driving and extra control in all weathers: QASHQAI has not been designed as a go-anywhere 4x4.

Safe and secure

Safety is a key strength of the vehicle, too. A rigid bodyshell providing maximum passive safety is matched by a plethora of active safety features including the latest generation ESP which includes brake torque control and engine torque control. The braking system is similarly advanced and features hydraulic fade compensation (HFC) to provide the ultimate stopping power at all times.

Who will buy QASHQAI? In the same way the car doesn't conform to the norm, so its customers will tend to be individuals with their own agendas. They will be open-minded and progressive with a passionate appetite for life. They are not among life's spectators.
