Dear Students,

MAT225 SSII Week 4 Summary!

Wow! We worked hard this week trying to make sense of Green's Thorem for Work Line Integrals in the Plane. We even extended Green's Theorem in the Normal Form for Flux Line Integrals in the Plane. We also played with triple integrals and Surface Integrals.

So, we are now ready to look at Stokes' Theorem and The Divergence Theorem next week. Note that The Divergence Theorem is also known as Gauss's Theorem. You remember Gauss from Physics E&M class and Maxwell's Equations fame, don't you?

These last two theorems are just both of Green's theorems extended from the Plane to Space (2D to 3D). All four theorems are known as the 4 Great Theorems of Multivariate Calculus and form the capstone to our course using all the tools we've developed all summer: Partial Derivatives, Iterated Integrals, Cartesian & Polar Coordinates, Cylindrical & Spherical Coordinates, Gradient Vectors and Gradient Fields, Divergence Functions and Curl Vectors! Holy cow!

Welcome to MAT225 Summer Session II 2025!

I can't wait to meet you all on Monday June 30th to start our Multivariable Calculus class during Summer Session II! Don't forget we meet every Monday-Thursday from 6/30/2025 to 7/31/2025 for 2 hours and 50 minutes each morning starting at 10:05AM sharp.

EDITOR'S NOTE:

This blog post is written from the perspective of a REMOTE class as I've been teaching remotely from 2020 to 2024! Please note, however, that we will, in fact, be meeting F2F (Face-to-Face) this semester.

Furthermore, our administration suggests that we should be ready to switch to the REMOTE learning paradigm at a moment's notice in case of any emergency, hence this blog post! We need to be ready for any short term disruption to F2F learning such as a power outage as well as any long term disruption such as a pandemic.

So, please note that everything in this blog applies to us except for dealing with testing remotely using the Squid and CAMScanner apps (unless we really do have an emergency). We will have traditional hardcopy tests when F2F to be completed with pencil and paper.

I will still run our class over zoom so I can easily share my WhiteBoard with you via the PC Projector and HDTVs in our room, B218. This is a Multimedia room with one A/V Podium, two Projection Screens and four 50" HDTVs spaced through out the room as well as balcony seating! You may even follow along on your laptop if you prefer.

Please note, 100% F2F attendance is required.

My D2L site is up and running but Nassau Community College (NCC) is not allowing access until Monday 6/30/2025. So, I thought I'd give you a few pointers ahead of time:

2) WELCOMEBIO

Please download the WELCOMEBIO which I will email separately through our class mailing list, fill it out and return to me via direct college email ASAP. My email address is listed in the SYLLABUS.

3) HARDWARE

We will be using a Free, Online Computer Algebra System (CAS) called Jupyter Notebook hosted on https://colab.research.google.com rather than a Graphing Calculator. So, please make sure you have a second device during class and tests, such as a tablet or ChromeBook, for calculations in addition to your primary device for viewing our lectures via Zoom. This implementation of Jupyter Notebook works seamlessly with Google Drive, so make sure you have a Google account. Here's some sample Jupyter code from the first class! BTW, JuPyteR is a programming environment, similar to Matematica, which works with the Julia, Python and R programming languages. We will be using Python. Welcome to Pythonic Math Learning!

I typically have 3 ChromeBooks running during class: one for hosting/monitoring zoom lectures, a second one to share notes and code during a zoom session and another one to read my notes and lesson plans. You may be able to get by with multiple tabs on one device. Please feel free to make your own choice. Pick whatever works best for you!

4) SCREENCASTS

You will find 3-4 screencasts of our lessons in each of the first 4 units on our D2L site. See a sample recording above from my Google Drive. I recorded these videos during Summer 2018 when I was using a similar CAS called SAGE hosted on the Google Compute Platform via https://sagecell.sagemath.org/ You may use SAGE or Jupyter or even a good old fashioned Graphing Calculator. Again, please feel free to make your own choice. Pick whatever works best for you!

5) SOFTWARE

In addition to Zoom, D2L, Google Drive and Jupyter, I will be using the Squid and CAMScanner apps and recommend you use them too. I'm using AndroidOS apps on my Chromebooks, but these apps, or something similar, should be available for iOS and Windows.

Squid is great for taking notes on a tablet or writing your solutions directly on a pdf such as a test using a stylus. The free version of Squid is great, but you need to pay a monthly fee or a one-time lifetime fee for pdf markup. I also paid a fee for the geometry tab which makes drawing diagrams with your stylus easier! The monthly fee is not much if you only want to use Squid for a few months. I paid the lifetime fee instead for a couple of extra features as I use this app all the time but I don't need the entire feature set.

CAMScanner is great for converting handwritten work to pdf format so you can email your Exams to me. Please make sure all submissions are legible before emailing.

Typically during my Zoom lecture I will be sharing notes with you using Squid with a stylus (handwritten notes) and Jupyter with a keyboard (python coding).

6) EXAMS

When you take an exam, you have a choice. You can download and print the test so you can complete it with pencil and paper in a traditional manner. Then you can use CAMScanner to convert your handwritten work to a pdf and email your test back to me. Alternatively, you can download the test onto your tablet, markup the pdf with your solutions using Squid with a stylus and just email the new pdf to me with your work. Again, please feel free to make your own choice. Pick whatever works best for you!

Test taking tips:

0) During any zoom session, remember:

No pajamas, no bedrooms!

1) Place your webcam such that I can see your workspace and your hands during the exam so I can see devices you are using. No cellphones! But Calculators, Laptops or Tablets are ok.

2) A copy of the TEST is available for download at 9:30AM from our D2L site so you can set up how you want to take the exam before class starts at 10:05AM (tablet and stylus or pencil and paper).

3) You may use anything on our D2L site to help you during the test.

4) Consult your preTEST solutions during the TEST as a model of how to write complete answers. Show all work supporting each answer.

5) Avail yourself of any computing environment you are familiar with to check your work: TI-83, TI-84, TI-85, TI-86, TI-89, TI-92, TI-200, TI Voyage, TI nSpire, etc.

6) Show all work in the spaces provided for each question or clearly labeled on separate sheets of paper.

7) Avoid 1/2 credit errors (round off error, missing units, incorrect notation, incomplete work, illegible work, etc).

8) You may leave class when you are done. Don't be in a hurry, you have all class period. Carefully check all your work, time permitting, before you leave class.

9) Return clearly legible copies of all your work as a single pdf file via school email no later than 15 minutes after you leave class or 1:10PM, whichever comes first (gives you time to use CAMScanner or Squid to prepare your work for uploading). Class ends 12:55PM.

Here's some sample TI-BASIC code from our first unit!

I typically have 3 ChromeBooks running during class: one for hosting/monitoring zoom lectures, a second one to share notes and code during a zoom session with my TI84 Plus CE Online Emulator and another one to read my notes and lesson plans. You may be able to get by with multiple tabs on one device. Please feel free to make your own choice. Pick whatever works best for you!

***PSA: The current TI-84 Plus CE online emulator available from TI requires you to log into the app periodically thereby wiping all your RAM!

This emulator's RAM is not persistent!

You will lose any stored work on your emulator. We will be writing several TI-BASIC programs for use in classwork, for homework and on tests, so this is a BIG problem!

Please use a hand-held TI-83/84 to store your work. Otherwise, you'll be re-entering programs all the time. That's a lot of typing....

The prior emulator, which was deprecated and replaced with this one, was a ChromeOS Extension and had no such draw back! The only limitation, which the current emulator also suffers from, is that there is no way to download *.p83 or *.p84 format programs directly from the web using software like TI-Connect, so you have to type all your code yourself. Another limitation that both emulators have is that they don't have python built-in, but TI-BASIC is fine.

These last 2 issues are not deal breakers, but RAM persistence is! I will use the emulator in class to demonstrate how to use your hand-held graphing calculator on my pseudo smartboard over zoom, but you need the real McCoy (Star Trek reference?) in your hands!

4) SCREENCASTS

You will find 3-4 primary screencasts of our lessons in each of the 5 units on our BrightSpace/D2L. See a sample recording above from my Google Drive. I recorded these videos, labeled Harvard Calculus (prior textbook), during Summer 2012 when I was using a TI83. These are the main screencasts for which you are responsible and the basis for our lectures. I have also included some extra related videos from my 2018 AP Calculus BC class using the TI nSpire CX CAS. You may view these for extra practice or just watch the Harvard Calculus Screencasts. Again, please feel free to make your own choice. Pick whatever works best for you!

5) SOFTWARE

In addition to Zoom, BrightSpace/D2L, Google Drive and TI84 Plus CE Online Emulator, I will be using the Squid and CAMScanner apps and recommend you use them too. I'm using AndroidOS apps on my Chromebooks, but these apps, or something similar, should be available for iOS and Windows.

Squid is great for taking notes on a tablet or writing your solutions directly on a pdf such as a test using a stylus. The free version of Squid is great, but you need to pay a monthly fee or a one time lifetime fee for pdf markup. I also paid a fee for the geometry tab which makes drawing diagrams with your stylus easier! The monthly fee is not much if you only want to use Squid for a month or two. I paid the lifetime fee instead for a couple of extra features as I use this app all the time but I don't need the entire feature set.

CAMScanner is great for converting handwritten work to pdf format so you can email your Exams to me. Please make sure all submissions are legible before emailing.

Typically during my Zoom lecture I will be sharing notes with you using Squid with a stylus (handwritten notes) and TI84 Plus CE Online Emulator with a keyboard (TI-BASIC coding).

6) EXAMS

Test taking tips:

0) During any zoom session, remember:

No pajamas, no bedrooms!

1) Place your webcam such that I can see your workspace and your hands during the exam so I can see devices you are using. No cellphones! But Calculators, Laptops or Tablets are ok.

2) A copy of the TEST is available for download at 7:30AM from BrighSpace/D2L so you can set up how you want to take the exam before class starts at 8AM (tablet and stylus or pencil and paper).

3) You may use anything on our BrighSpace/D2L site to help you during the test.

4) Consult your preTEST solutions during the TEST as a model of how to write complete answers. Show all work supporting each answer.

5) Avail yourself of any computing environment you are familiar with to check your work: TI-83, TI-84, TI-85, TI-86, TI-89, TI-92, TI-200, TI Voyage, TI nSpire, etc.

6) Show all work in the spaces provided for each question or clearly labeled on separate sheets of paper.

7) Avoid 1/2 credit errors (round off error, missing units, incorrect notation, incomplete work, illegible work, etc).

8) You may leave class when you are done. Don't be in a hurry, you have all class period. Carefully check all your work, time permiting, before you leave class.

9) Return clearly legible copies of all your work as a single pdf file via school email no later than 15 minutes after you leave class or 11:05AM, whichever comes first (gives you time to use CAMScanner or Squid to prepare your work for uploading). Class ends 10:50AM.

Thanx for attending my session! I hope you had as much fun at LIMACON 2023 as I had presenting this topic. Remember that you are special: you are the first group I have 'taught' F2F since the COVID19 Lockdown of 3/16/2020. I have been teaching remotely at NCC every semester ever since. That's exactly three years and one day today: 3/17/2023!

Dang pandemic ruined everything. I even had to retire from teaching High School on 8/12/2020 after 36 years. BTW, I taught primarily AP Calculus AB&BC, AP Computer Science A&AB, preCalculus and preCompSci. I sure don't miss the ton of commuting, nor do I miss the politics. But I do miss all the fun I had with my kids....

Here's the motivation for my talk: Summer 2018 I was asked to teach Multivariate Calculus, MAT225, at a local college the week before the class was to begin! I never had the opportunity to teach this course before! I had no text book, I had no SmartBoard and I had no calculators or emulators! However, NCC did provide me with a huge multimedia classroom complete with a PC podium, 2 PC Projectors, 2 Large PC Projection Screens, Huge White Board Wall (replacing several large roll-up chalk boards) and several 50" HDTVs mirroring the PC Projector all over the room and all the way up to the balcony seating (see picture above from my Summer 2014 Calculus II class using TI89 emulators)! So, I had to play defense leaning heavily on my tech background to fill in the missing pieces:

1) To review the material I had not seen since the early days of my Honors Physics & Electrical Engineering majors at Cornell in the late 1970s, I took notes on every lesson I could find on MIT OCW and on YouTube related to Multivariate & Vector Calculus!

2) I ran to my WileyPlus rep who had kindly given me access to electronic versions of the AP Computer Science text I use at my high school to ask for an ebook version of the calculus text we were supposed to be using. There was a bit of a SNAFU, however, at the book store whereby they ordered the wrong book. So, I got the latest edition of Calculus III by Deborah Hughes-Hallet on WileyPlus including lots of homework sets, tests and solutions free for the download!

Please note that the textbook we now use at NCC is Calculus I-III 3rd edition by William Briggs from Pearson Press.

3) In order to emulate a SmartBoard, I brought in my 2-in-1 Samsung Chromebook Plus. This Chromebook is one of the first to use Chrome extensions as well as Droid apps. I primarily used these apps:

Screencastomatic (now called ScreenPal),

Teamviewer and

Squid.

This Chromebook is just a big tablet with an attached keyboard and trackpad mouse plus a garaged, passive S-Pen stylus. I can hand-write notes with the S-Pen and students can see my notes on the PC Projector or HDTVs using the Teamviewer mirroring app and Squid pen app as I recorded for YouTube on the Screencast-o-matic app!

Please note that now I'm using the Lenovo Flex 5i and the ACER Spin 714 2-in-1 chromebooks. These chromebooks are great as I can use them in laptop mode to type code or tablet mode the hand-write notes for my students as needed. I'm also using Zoom replacing the functionality of the Teamviewer and Screencast-o-matic apps. The Spin 714 has a garaged self charging active USI 2.0 stylus that is compatible with the Flex 5i too so I don't have to carry around a bunch of pens! All my notes and code are stored in my Google Drive. So I follow my notes on my Flex 5i while writing notes for the students on my Spin 714 during class. The PC Podium and the Spin 714 are both logged into a Zoom session. The Spin 714 is the host and the PC Podium monitors the Zoom session as if it were a student logging remotely from home. In this way, the students see what I'm writing projected all over the room! I can even record the session for YouTube live during class using Zoom. Squid is still my go to app for hand-writing notes with my stylus. When teaching remotely from home, I use the Flex 5i to monitor the zoom session and add my Raspberry PI 400 to view my notes. The RPI is my desktop using a BlueTooth keyboard and mouse as well as driving a 27 inch HDTV on my desk as a monitor, so it's great for viewing my notes online! Also, SUNY Old Westbury gave us PC Lab 0103 for my presentation during LIMACON 2023:

4) I used SAGE instead of a graphing calculator in this course. So, the attached keyboard and trackpad mouse came in handy! I encouraged my students to bring in their own tablets and/or laptops to follow along. In fact, most of my notes became SageNotes rather than SmartNotes. Also, tests were "open internet!" During a test, I would sit in the balcony where I could see all my students' laptop screens and confirm that they stayed on task and were only accessing my blog (with sample source code) and SageCell (to check their work) while still showing all their work. The students could even consult my YouTube Playlist for this class, if they were so inclined, but they really did not have time to do that during a test.

Please note that said Playlist and code samples have since migrated to my Patreon as well as to the class Blackboard site!

So, the remainder of my presentation revolved around how to use SAGE in class. LIMACON was kind enough to put me in a computer room so my attendees could code along with me. SAGE is a Computer Algebra System (CAS) running online in the cloud based on the Python programming language. SAGE has the look and feel of Mathematica and the functionality of MATLAB plus it's free to use on SageCell. There is a commercial version called CoCalc with some more features available too.

Please note that I now use Jupyter Notebooks with a combination of Python, Sympy, Markdown and Latex which is similar to SAGE (sample code below)! We covered a little of everything listed below but did not have time to try 401b nor did we get to the exercises included in a mere 50 minutes.

Last, but not least, I used Jupyter Notebook or Sage at least one class per week with my own high school students even in courses that required a graphing calculator on their exit exams such as Regents classes. Some classes, such as preCalculus or Multivariable Calculus, without said requirements, benefit greatly from the use of Jupyter Notebook in place of Graphing Calculators every day all year or all semester long!

Learning Classical Guitar, The Saga Continues Update

I've been dabbling with teaching myself the Classical Guitar since 2012 when the post below was originally written. I never had enough time to devote to this hobby of mine before retirement. Now, I've returned to it with a vengeance, making a bit of progress!

I finally figured it out. Classical Guitar is all about arpeggiating chords finger style. Flamenco Guitar is all about strumming chord progrssions. All I have to do now is figure out an easy chord progression and an easy strumming pattern! I'm getting there, one day at a time. I just have to put in the time practicing 30 minutes every other day or so.

For example, see Bartolomé Calatayud's score "Vals" below as an example of a finger style Classical Guitar piece. Take a look at the first bar, there's 3 voices there already: Melody, Accompaniment and Bass. These are played with the 4 fingers of the right hand, P.I.M.A.

P = pulgar = thumb = bass

I = indice = index = accompaniment

M = medio = middle = accompaniment

A = anular = ring = melody

(m = meñique = pinky = not used)

All the subsiquent bars follow the same pattern. The first bar is interesting as the left hand has nothing to do with all the open strings! So the thumb plays the low E string for the bass line simultaneously with the ring finger on the high E string for the melody. Then the B & G strings are played as an accompaniment using the index and middle fingers as the E strings are still ringing. Very Cool!

Vals is a great beginner piece. Left hand fingering isn't too hard but the chords have great musicality! Just be careful of the Bm7 chord in bar 10. All you have to do is plant 3 fingers on the 2nd fret of each of the A, G & E strings just before starting that bar. The rest of the piece repeats these elements over and over with a great waltz vibe that is very sonorous. The score pictured below is only part of the piece. Here's the whole score.

Also, holding the guitar Flamenco style (horizontally over the right leg while seated) rather than the Classical style (nearly vertical with the guitar between the legs and the left leg elevated while seated) may be better suited to my guitar as it is oversized!

Finally, I need to find some exotic sounding Flamenco chords rather than the traditional Classical chords. I've been experimenting with Am, E, F & G chords with E, F & G sliding up and down the neck of the guitar. Flamenco Style lends itself more easily to improvisation by changing progressions or strumming patterns, even a little finger picking and arpeggiating, with little to no sight reading.

From this, you may suppose that I'm only playing Flamenco. This is not the case. I'm playing some Classical Guitar pieces too but I'm using some Flamenco techniques at the same time.

Ahh ... the pursuits of Summer! Finally, it's time for some R&R. I know, perish the thought, but its time for some non Math related activities! In fact, I'm off for the whole Summer for the first time in 30 years! Can you believe it? I'm still pinching myself. I guess this is a practice run at retirement? Now I finally have plenty of time to devote to walking, biking, swimming and eating right! For me, the Summer is a spiritual time to regroup and fortify myself mind, body, heart and soul for next school year. I like to focus on outdoor activities for exercise and a good diet. Its also time for more soulful activities of Stone and Wood such as playing chess and classical guitar. I'm also attending to some of my old hobbies such as gaming, reading and catching up on genre TV and film.

I haven't blogged much about this but, not only am I a Science Fact slash Science Fiction geek, but I am also a huge Classical Music nerd! I am into all periods of instrumental music from chamber pieces to orchestral. I'm especially enamored of all forms of "Classical Guitar." I played the violin from 7th to 12th grade some 33 years ago. I was 1st violin for all 4 years of High School. I was even the Concert Master and Conductor from time to time. So, a few years ago, I thought I could teach myself how to play Classical Guitar! I love all periods of guitar repertoire: Baroque, Classical, Renaissance and Modern. I've played Violin, Mandolin, Guitar and Lute. I love Baroque, Spanish, Flamenco and Celtic tunes too! So, in my "copious" free time, I've not progressed very far, but it's been a fun journey. What follows, therefore, is a Math slash Physics Teacher's take on alternative tunings for the Modern Acoustic Guitar with nylon strings. I suppose I'll have to take off my Computer Science hat since we haven't dealt with microprocessor clock speeds in Hz since Grace Murray Hopper and the Harvard Mark I!

First, I tried classic finger style guitar a la Andres Segovia and Fred Noad. The problem with Modern Standard Guitar Tuning is that it mixes 4ths and 3rds? Since I'm used to the Violin which is tuned to all perfect 5ths, the fingerings and deciphering standard notation on the Guitar turned into a massive headache for me. So, I ended up using a lot of Tab. You know, if I were a High School student today, for all that everyone thinks I'm a math and computing genius, I would be classified special ed! I have a very bad memory and I'm dyslexic. So, I really have a hard time learning new things. That's why I'm a Math teacher, I derive everything I need from scratch each day depending on the topic at hand. That way I don't have to memorize much. Now, I even need reading glasses to see anything small or close up. I blame TI for that. I've been peering at Graphing Calculator screens everyday for the last 20 years. If they were like today's iPod screens which are back-lit, hi res and hi color, that would be one thing. However, the TI screens were all dark, low res and grey scaled (until recently) ... ugh!

This is the standard tuning for the modern acoustic guitar. All the strings are tuned a perfect 4th apart with one exception. The interval between strings 2 and 3 is only a 3rd. Its very confusing to play with such a tuning when you're used to all 5ths tuning on the violin!

Then I tried the flamenco style when I got myself an Esteban Guitar. The price (I got it off QVC) was not bad for a decent guitar, case and amp! The problem with the Esteban technique is that it was not based on standard music notation, nor was it based on Spanish, aka modern, guitar TAB. It was based on playing by ear or by watching the fingerings on his VHS tapes or some wacko notation he made up!

There are a lot of variations when tuning the Flamenco Guitar. This one is called the "DAD" variant. Its simple to retune a standard guitar by dropping the 6th string one step from E2 to D2 giving a 5th interval between strings 6 and 5.

I finally broke down and went back to my violin roots learning Mandolin Scores. Playing the Mandolin is a lot like playing the Violin except you use a pick. Also, tuning the Mandolin is a lot like tuning the Violin with perfect 5ths except its like a Lute in that it has courses not just single strings. Courses are 2 strings tuned to the same pitch. So, the Mandolin still has 4 pitches like the Violin, but it has 8 strings! Playing the Mandolin was fun and brought back memories of my Violin repertoire. However, the timbre of the higher courses were too tinny for my liking.

This is the tuning I'm used to as it uses all 5ths as intervals between each pair of strings. BTW, retuning a guitar is easy if you have an electronic tuner. I have a cool app on my DROIDX smart phone called gStrings. It samples inputted audio and tells you what frequency and note you have tuned a particular string to ... very handy!

Note that this tuning is just like Violin tuning except the 4th string starts a 5th below.

This tuning is like the Viola except that every string on the Cello is tuned an octave below the corresponding string of the Viola (note all frequencies are half as much, eg A 440 becomes A 220).

Bass tuning is to the Cello as Viola tuning is to the Violin since all strings are a 5th lower!

Finally, I discovered a great music teacher, Allan Alexander and all his scores and CDs on EBay! I consider myself lucky to have had 2 great music teachers in my life. Pedro Biava was my first teacher. He taught me the Violin and conducted the High School orchestra. He was also director of the Longwood School District's Music Program. He started it on a wing and a prayer and grew the program to great success over his 30 year career. He also played a mean Cello. I graduated High School in 1979 and he retired in 1990. He then started a second career as an entertainment attourney for musicians moving to Florida. His brother Luis Biava is also an accomplished musician. My second teacher is Allan Alexander. I discovered his website (see link above) and his EBay store. That's where I purchased all his score books and CD bundles for learning to play the Guitar and Mandolin. His masterpiece, however, in my opinion, is "The Guitarist's Lute Book." This ingenious book was all about playing French TAB for the 6-course Renaissance Lute on the modern Acoustic Guitar simply by down tuning the G string to F# and placing a capo on the 3rd fret thus achieving Standard Lute Tuning on the guitar. Also, learning French Tab was easy, with Allan's help! It's like Spanish (aka modern) Tab, except instead of numbering the fingerings as 0,1,2,3,4,5 letters a,b,c,d,e are used. Also, the letters are in a fancy font: c looks like r so as not to confuse it with e and d looks like a lowercase Greek letter delta. BTW, I can be forgiven for playing Tab here as most, if not all, surviving Renaissance Lute music was recorded in French Tab (sample below).

The first thing I learned from Allan was how to tune a Guitar as a Lute. Simply take a standard Guitar, tune the 3rd string down a half tone from G to F#. Then place a capo on the 3rd fret!

Now, I finally decided to try my own tuning! I wanted to go back to 5ths tuning on the Guitar so I could easily play it as a Mandolin. I'll call mine Cello Guitar Tuning which is somewhere between the New Standard Tuning (NST) and MandoGuitar Tuning. The California Guitar Trio in the YouTube above is known for using NST. With my tuning I can play finger style guitar with mandolin, violin and even Cello Scores!

This would be the ideal tuning as the intervals between each pair of strings is a perfect 5th. However, the standard high E string on the guitar will snap when tuned to 493.9 Hz! The solution here would be to get a string with a slightly smaller wire gauge and replace the E string with it. I'll have to experiment with other gauges.

NST was put forward to solve the problem of streching the high E string too much. The compromise here is to give up the perfect 5th interval for just the highest pair of strings and tune to a perfect 3rd instead. They say this makes for easier chords but I'd like to stick to all 5ths somehow.

MandoGuitar takes the tradition of the Classical Guitar player's playing treble clef violin or mandolin scores as is, without transcription, tuning the guitar an octave lower. The standard high E 329.6 (an octave lower than the high E on the Violin) is retained but the rest of the guitar is tuned in 5ths. You could probably play Cello repertoire as this tuning will include Cello tuning A3, D3, G2 and C2! However, F1 is too low a frequency even for the highest gauge string.

Here's my final solution for the MandoGuitar F1 problem - just 5 strings! G2 and C2 on strings 4 and 5 are a bit easier to play. So, get rid of the standard D string and restring! In other words, move the 2 lowest strings from positions 5 and 6 up to positions 4 and 5 then retune to G2 and C2. 5 strings is enough for what I want to achieve: a Guitar on which you can play Violin and Cello scores easily. Maybe a higher gauge string 6 would work, but the guitar would have to be redrilled too.

So, in conclusion, my favorite tuning is Allan's 6-course Renaissance Lute! However, I will try some Violin and Mandolin repertoire on my CelloGuitar. I'm using CelloGuitar1 right now, but I will be trying CelloGuitar2 or all 5ths with a thinner string1. Pictured above is sample Flamenco Tab. I always wondered how the Classical Guitarists play Bach's Cello Suites on a standard guitar since the transcriptions would have been horrendous! Now I know, they just retuned to 5ths!

Now that it's 2024, I suppose it's time for a New Year's Resolution:

"I resolve never to get so upset anytime I see a blatant disregard for the proper use of units or a lack of number sense anymore!"

This issue of innumeracy shows up everywhere. I think you'd be very surprised by just how ubiquitous this problem really is! Take a look at just a few examples below:

Verizon To The Rescue!

This audio clip, turned YouTube video, is one of the most infamous examples of this complete disregard for number sense and dimensional analysis. Suffice it to say that an approximate 36000 KB cell phone data overage times 0.002 cents per KB is billed at approximately $72???

Potato Farmer

Me: My dear sir, that's quite a sign you have!

Farmer: Why, yes, we are having a big sale.

Me: I can see that! This sale is amazing!

Farmer: May I interest you in some potatoes?

Me: Certainly, I'll take 100lbs.

Is the Tile clerk guilty of this mortal sin as well? So, shall we pay our 69 cents per tile and meekly walk away shaking our collective heads without uttering so much as a single cough in derision? No, I will make my order and pay 69 cents for 100 tiles! Maybe I'll take 1000 tiles off the clerk's hands for a measly $6.90! Why stop there, how about 10000.... OK, ok, now this is getting out of hand! SMH

Note: original Roman Numerals were not based on positional arithmetic. II II VI does not equal 2*100+2*10+6 aka 226, it's just 2+2+6=10. Also, the original Roman Numeral System did not use iv=4 nor vi=6. Renaissance Monks made up that "impovement" making copying texts less time consuming! Maybe II II IIIIII would be a more consistent error? BTW, CC XX VI = 226.

This week, we finished our coverage of chapter 17 on Vector Calculus.

On Monday, we learned how to use Green's Theorem For Work In The Plane (2D) to calculate line integrals measuring work done in a Vector Field. We then learned about Flux and Green's Theorem Normal Form.

Tuesday was devoted to Triple Integration and Surface Integrals.

So, on Wednesday we had all the building blocks to extend Green's Theorem Normal Form to measure Flux in Space (3D) with the Divergence Theorem. Here's a Divergence Theorem example.

Thursday was all about extending Green's Theorem For Work in the Plane to work with 3D Vector Fields using Stokes' Theorem. Here's an example of Stokes' Theorem.

We also talked about Maxwell's Equations!

When studying for next week's exams, please remember that our syllabus skips 16.7 in Briggs 3rd edition Change Of Variables For Multiple Integrals (Jacobian Discriminant). We also skipped Parametrically Defined Surfaces in Space. We only used Parametrically Defined Curves in the Plane.

WEEK03: Iterated Integrals MAT225 SII 2023

Dear Students,

Congratulations! You did it! You made it through your third week of MAT225 Multivariate Calculus!

We covered chapter 16 on Iterated Integrals and part of Chapter 17 on Line Integrals. We learned how to set up area, volume and mass problems as double integrals. We practiced working with different regions on the XY-plane using these area elements: dydx, dxdy and rdrd𝜭. We also worked with line integrals for calculating mass and work. Last, but not least, we played with conservative fields and the Fundamental Theorem of Line Integrals.

Oh, don't forget Fubini's Theorem!

Dear Students,

Congratulations! You did it! You made it through your second week of MAT225 Multivariate Calculus!

We covered chapter 15 on Partial Derivatives. We learned about first partials, second partials, mixed partials. We even talked about two tests for Optimization: 2nd Partials Test & LaGrange Multipliers. We also learned about the Multivariate Chain Rule and the Gradient!

As noted in class, the summer session version of this course is a consolidated schedule based on my Fall/Spring classes. We have the same amount of class time for each unit, but there's only so much I can cram into your brains in one week over the summer session!

Each of our 5 Units in the Fall runs for 3 weeks with 2 classes per week and 2 hours per class.

In the Summer, each of our 5 Units runs only 1 week with 4 classes per week and 3 hours per class. That's 12 hours either way.

Congratulations! You did it! You made it through our first week of MAT225 Multivariate Calculus! We covered chapters 13 & 14 on Vectors & Matrices. We learned about vector addition and subtraction as well as multiplying a vector by a scalar, the dot product and the cross product. We also discussed Matrix arithmetic and Matrix algebra.

We even had our first preTEST review in BreakOut Rooms on Zoom. Remember:

1) Place your webcam such that I can see your workspace during the exam. No cellphones! But preTEST notes, Calculators, Laptops or Tablets are ok.

Please note that now I'm using the Lenovo Flex 5i and the ACER Spin 714 2-in-1 chromebooks. These chromebooks are great as I can use them in laptop mode to type code or tablet mode the hand-write notes for my students as needed. I'm also using Zoom replacing the functionality of the Teamviewer and Screencast-o-matic apps. The Spin 714 has a garaged self charging active USI stylus that is compatible with the Flex 5i too so I don't have to carry around a bunch of pens! All my notes and code are stored in my Google Drive. So I follow my notes on my Flex 5i while writing notes for the students on my Spin 714 during class. The PC Podium and the Spin 714 are both logged into a Zoom session. The Spin 714 is the host and the PC Podium monitors the Zoom session as if it were a student logging remotely from home. In this way, the students see what I'm writing projected all over the room! I can even record the session for YouTube live during class using Zoom. Squid is still my go to app for hand-writing notes with my stylus. When teaching remotely from home, I use the Flex 5i to monitor the zoom session and add my Raspberry PI 400 to view my notes. The RPI is my desktop using a BlueTooth keyboard and mouse as well as driving a 27 inch HDTV on my desk as a monitor, so it's great for viewing my notes online! Also, SUNY Old Westbury gave us PC Lab 0103 for my presentation during LIMACON 2023:

4) I used SAGE instead of a graphing calculator in this course. So, the attached keyboard and trackpad mouse came in handy! I encouraged my students to bring in their own tablets and laptops to follow along. In fact, most of my notes became SageNotes rather than SmartNotes. Also, tests were "open internet!" During a test, I would sit in the balcony where I could see all my students' laptop screens and confirm that they stayed on task and were only accessing my blog (with sample source code) and SageCell (to check their work) while still showing all their work. The students could even consult my YouTube Playlist for this class, if they were so inclined, but they really did not have time to do that during a test.

Last, but not least, I used Jupyter Notebook at least one class per week with my own high school students even in courses that required a graphing calculator on their exit exams such as Regents classes. Some classes, such as preCalculus or Multivariable Calculus, without said requirements, benefit greatly from the use of Jupyter Notebook in place of Graphing Calculators every day all year or all semester long!

Welcome MAT225 Summer Session II 2023!

I can't wait to meet you all on Wednesday July 5th to start our Multivariable Calculus class during Summer Session II! Don't forget we meet mostly Monday-Thursday from 7/5/2023 to 8/3/2023 for 2 hours and 50 minutes each morning starting at 10:05AM sharp. Please note, that Week01 is strange as July 4th is a Tuesday, so we will meet Wednesday-Friday and Week02 will meet Monday-Friday.

My Blackboard site is up and running but Nassau Community College (NCC) is not allowing access until Wednesday 7/5/2022. Also, I may migrate our course from BalckBoard to D2L. So, I thought I'd give you a few pointers ahead of time:

2) WELCOMEBIO

Please download the WELCOMEBIO from BlackBoard, fill it out and return to me via college email ASAP. My email address is listed in the SYLLABUS.

3) HARDWARE

We will be using a Free, Online Computer Algebra System (CAS) called Jupyter hosted on https://colab.research.google.com rather than a Graphing Calculator. So, please make sure you have a second device during class and tests, such as a tablet or ChromeBook, for calculations in addition to your primary device for viewing our lectures via Zoom. Here's some sample Jupyter code from the first class!

4) SCREENCASTS

You will find 3-4 screencasts of our lessons in each of the first 4 units on our BlackBoard. See a sample recording above from my Google Drive. I recorded these videos during Summer 2018 when I was using a similar CAS called SAGE hosted on the Google Compute Platform using https://sagecell.sagemath.org/ You may use SAGE or Jupyter or even a good old fashioned Graphing Calculator. Again, please feel free to make your own choice. Pick whatever works best for you!

5) SOFTWARE

In addition to Zoom, Blackboard, Google Drive and Jupyter, I will be using the Squid and CAMScanner apps and recommend you use them too. I'm using AndroidOS apps on my Chromebooks, but these apps, or something similar, should be available for iOS and Windows.

Squid is great for taking notes on a tablet or writing your solutions directly on a pdf such as a test using a stylus. The free version of Squid is great, but you need to pay a monthly fee or a one time lifetime fee for pdf markup. I also paid a fee for the geometry tab which makes drawing diagrams with your stylus easier! The monthly fee is not much if you only want to use Squid for a few months. I paid the lifetime fee instead for a couple of extra features as I use this app all the time but I don't need the entire feature set.

CAMScanner is great for converting handwritten work to pdf format so you can email your Exams to me. Please make sure all submissions are legible before emailing.

Typically during my Zoom lecture I will be sharing notes with you using Squid with a stylus (handwritten notes) and Jupyter with a keyboard (python coding).

Please note that now I'm using the Lenovo Flex 5i and the ACER Spin 714 2-in-1 chromebooks. These chromebooks are great as I can use them in laptop mode to type code or tablet mode the hand-write notes for my students as needed. I'm also using Zoom replacing the functionality of the Teamviewer and Screencast-o-matic apps. The Spin 714 has a garaged self charging active USI stylus that is compatible with the Flex 5i too so I don't have to carry around a bunch of pens! All my notes and code are stored in my Google Drive. So I follow my notes on my Flex 5i while writing notes for the students on my Spin 714 during class. The PC Podium and the Spin 714 are both logged into a Zoom session. The Spin 714 is the host and the PC Podium monitors the Zoom session as if it were a student logging remotely from home. In this way, the students see what I'm writing projected all over the room! I can even record the session for YouTube live during class using Zoom. Squid is still my go to app for hand-writing notes with my stylus. When teaching remotely from home, I use the Flex 5i to monitor the zoom session and add my Raspberry PI 400 to view my notes. The RPI is my desktop using a BlueTooth keyboard and mouse as well as driving a 27 inch HDTV on my desk as a monitor, so it's great for viewing my notes online! Also, SUNY Old Westbury gave us PC Lab 0103 for my presentation during LIMACON 2023:

4) I used SAGE instead of a graphing calculator in this course. So, the attached keyboard and trackpad mouse came in handy! I encouraged my students to bring in their own tablets and laptops to follow along. In fact, most of my notes became SageNotes rather than SmartNotes. Also, tests were "open internet!" During a test, I would sit in the balcony where I could see all my students' laptop screens and confirm that they stayed on task and were only accessing my blog (with sample source code) and SageCell (to check their work) while still showing all their work. The students could even consult my YouTube Playlist for this class, if they were so inclined, but they really did not have time to do that during a test.
