You’d never dream of washing good wool or cashmere sweater with just any old detergent, but most people don’t think twice about applying shampoo to the priceless fibre that’s sitting on their head. 2

The problem is that shampoos have a dirty little secret…they contain harsh detergents such as sodium lauryl sulphate, ammonium lauryl sulphate, which are foaming agents found in dishwashing liquid and laundry detergent. 2

Sure they are great for pots and pan...because they cut out grease! Your hair on the other hand, needs to preserve its natural oils to protect it, and your scalp. Stripping them away deprives hair of necessary moisture, amino acids, and antibodies, and thus makes it look dry, dull, and lifeless. It also does the same thing to your skin! 2

Let me emphasize again that I am not a fan of Shampoos. Since I wear protective styles a lot I co-wash every 7-14 days and cleanse monthly using Karen’s Body Beautiful Ultimate conditioning Shampoo (97% Natural), Deva Curl No Poo, or Authentic West African Black Soap.

I often wear my twists for 3-4 weeks hence every few days I use a homemade DIY Lavender spritz to cleanse and deodorize my hair and scalp.

Conditioner: The moisturizing conditioner you use is the heart of your healthy hair care regimen. A little trial and error will be required to determine the conditioning products that best suit your hair needs. It is critical to note that conditioning products look after the bulk of protein and moisture balancing in a healthy hair care regimen. 1

I use Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose Conditioner as my moisturizing conditioner weekly or as needed, and Aubrey organics Glycogen Protein Balancing Conditioner every 2 – 4 weeks.

I do an intensive protein conditioning treatment every 3-6 weeks using homemade DIY recipes such as Eggs & Molasses or Avocados. I often alternate these recipes with Moroccan henna gloss treatments.

Daily moisturizers: These are a must-have in every healthy hair care regimen. The best water based moisturizers do not contain heavy, hair shaft coating oils such as mineral oil or petrolatum; rather, they contain a mixture of water, humectants and natural oils or butters. 1

Some of my favourite DIY moisturizing daily spritzes are listed below:

Hibiscus & Calendula Hair Tonic
Rose Water

Handy Tip: Do not forget to lock in moisture using a light coating of a natural oil/butter. This helps to reduce breakage and prevents outside humidity from frizzing the hair. 1

I use Kinky Curly Knot Today as my leave-in water based conditioner, and as a protein based leave in I still use Aubrey Organics Glycogen Protein Balancing conditioner! I apply them after my hair is shampooed and conditioned, and every 1-3 days as needed [after spritzing]

After taking out my twists [before cleansing/"shampooing"] I pre-poo with Coconut oil always.
Some of my favourite carrier & essential oils include: Jojoba, Castor oil, Lavender, Rosemary & Tea tree oil.
I rarely use hair gels & only air-dry.

I detangle only before and after I cleanse using a Denman brush and wide toothcomb, and most of the time I style with my fingers (my nails are kept in check so that they don’t snag /break my hair)

To be honest, I do not usually stretch my hair, nor pick my fro, as I do not mind shrinkage, but when I do I utilized the method below.

When using metal free ouchless band to stretch hair, pre-soak them in oil (coconut oil, olive oil, grape-seed oil, avocado oil, etc). This method is less drying to the hair. When taking them out, do so gently, or cut them out to avoid breakage.

I run a small business so I’m always on the go! Hence, as mentioned above, I use a lot of protective styles, such as: Bantu knots and two strand twists.

Furthermore, I really enjoy cooking so I make most of my hair treatments too. Lastly, I always sleep in a satin cap. My pillows are also covered in satin! J

While you’re getting your 8 hours of beauty rest moisture is evaporating from your strands into the night air. That’s why hair can feel dry and straw-like after being slept on, uncovered, for hours. You can slow down the evaporation process by covering your hair at night, thereby keeping moisture locked in.

This is WizKid & Skales first time to Canada. The press conference though slated for 7.00 p.m. did not start until 9:15 p.m. but it was well worth the wait!

Clad in a red T-shirt [with a small animal print patch pocket] and a pair of blue jeans; Wizkid looked both casual and CHIC. His signature shades, no surprise, stayed on all night.

He confessed that he'd been looking forward to touring Toronto and made sure to thank his fans for his continued success.

Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun a.k.a Wizkid, is an incredibly talented artist from Nigeria. Since the release of his debut album Superstar last year, the 23 year old has won a MOBO award, BET award [Best International Act, 2012] and signed with AKON’s Konvict Music!

He is also the official brand ambassador to Pepsi in Africa, as well as Nigerian Breweries along side Tuface and D’Banj.

Since I only had 5 minutes with him to talk one-on-one these where the questions I asked...

"Superstar.” WizKid replied. Maybe he thought I asked: What was the name of the first album you ever dropped.

Being a hair & style blog, I also had to ask if his music inspires his haircut and fashion style. The young star politely replied, “Not really, I like to be comfortable so I wear mostly hoodies.”

In any case, we think he has the complete package...youth, voice, looks, and HAIR! and depicts these effortlessly.

Best Hair Detangler

The first ingredient in detangling hair is patience.

Our fingers are next and probably the most ignored tools!

When we use our fingers to detangle [unlike a comb or brush] we can feel the knots and tangles easily. So always begin with your fingers and then follow with a comb or a brush. Like any other styling tools, hands must be kept in good condition. Your fingernails should be smooth and snag free, and your hands should be soft, moisturised and callous-free to prevent hair damage.

Follow your finger detangling with a wide tooth comb and/or a brush [with a rubber base and wide bristles].

The Denman and the Tangle Teezer are good examples of these types of brushes.

Remember when detangling: separate your hair into 4-8 sections and always begin at the ends, then gradually work your way up. Tresses must always be moisturized with water and/or lubricated with a moisturizer or oil to reduce unnecessary breakage. Once you have detangled each section, pin it up or re-braid it out of your way.

I know I've hinted at this already, but keep in mind: curly hair must always be detangled with great care.

After thoroughly detangling, you can proceed with regular styling or move on to the low manipulation hair-cleansing techniques.

Henna Gloss Recipe
For those who want all the benefits of Henna without the colour

50g. 100% BAQ Moroccan Henna

1 tbsp. Certified Organic Honey

½ cup Aubrey Organics conditioner

1/8 cup Green tea

Gloves

[Double this recipe if you have longer hair]

1. Pre-poo with Coconut oil overnight (see below).

2. Mix the henna and green tea together to create a thick paste.

3. Add the honey, then the conditioner, and mix well.

4. After you have cleansed and rinsed your hair, with gloved hands, apply Henna in sections to wet hair. Being sure to coat hair from the roots to ends.

5. Cover hair with a shower cap, plastic wrap or old towel to maintain heat.(3)

6. For best results leave in overnight, or for 4-5 hours.

7. When timing is completed, rinse out thoroughly with tons of conditioner & warm water, do this repeatedly until the henna is all washed out.
Henna can be drying; washing it out with conditioner several times helps to tackle this problem.

Researchers have found that using polar oils such as coconut oil as a pre-shampoo treatment can protect hair fibers against hygral fatigue. (2)

Hair is a highly complex biomaterial composed of layers of differing materials, ranging from varying types of keratin structures to pigment molecules to fatty acids. When it is saturated with water and swells and then subsequently dries via natural or thermal means, it undergoes what is known as differential drying and differential deformation (because each separate type of molecule within the overall structure dries and deforms at differing rates). This leads to moisture-induced stress on the hair, which can lead to delamination (cuticle layer stripping off), breakage, fiber fatigue, and rupture (split ends). This whole phenomenon is referred to as hygral fatigue. So, anything that reduces hygral fatigue is great for the health of your hair in the long term. (4)

**(If using Henna on Grey or White Hair see directions below)**

Pour 50g Henna into a glass or plastic bowl.

Gradually add boiling coffee or tea to the Henna powder.

Add 1 Tablespoons of Apple Cider Vinegar.

Use a wooden or plastic spoon to mix thoroughly to a creamy soup-like consistency,

(More liquid can be added if mixture is too thick).  (3)

Substitute Coffee or Tea for Water to add these effects:

Coffee helps to tone down red tones, deepens brown-red tones, & cover grey.

Use brewed, black coffee or espresso (not instant or decaffeinated). After coffee or espresso is brewed, bring to a boil. Mix as directed above.

Remember the water, tea or coffee should be brought to a boil. The amount you use is up to you. More can be added if the mixture thickens. Apply Henna while warm, not hot.

The electric Thermo Heat Cap can improve colour and conditioning.(3)

Apple Cider Vinegar – To help all colors hold on grey hair, add 1-2 tbsp. Apple cider vinegar to Henna mixture. (3)

Dry or Damaged Hair – Add 1 Egg, or 1-2 tbsp. of Olive Oil, or 1-2 tbsp of Plain Yogurt to the Henna mixture. These natural ingredients not only condition, but help with the application and rinsing processes. Choose any 1 of the 3 options above for similar results. (3)

Chlorine - To help the colour last longer; avoid swimming and showering in chlorinated water. (3)

Are you looking for a toxic free hair dye?

Do you have more than just a few grey hairs?

Then keep reading!

The tradition of Ayurveda is a 5,000 year old system of holistic healing that originates from India. (9) My first introduction to Henna was through a good friend The HodgePodge Files. She highlighted the use of Cassia Obovata & Amla powder to condition & strengthen the hair; hence I decided to give it a try. I’m so thankful I did!

Over 2/3 months I’ve used Cassia, Amla and Shikakai powder treatment consistently and loved the results. These Ayurvedic Herb treatments cleanse, condition, and add shine to your hair. However, I will limit full treatments to once or twice a month only because it can be time consuming.

What is Cassia Obovata?

Cassia obovata powder looks very much like henna powder, but generally does not stain hair or hands. It is an excellent conditioner, which makes hair glossy and thick, with a healthy scalp. When you mix this green leaf powder with warm water (or green tea), it has a strong smell similar to a heap of warm mowed grass. If your powder stains your hair or hands yellow, it probably has some rhubarb root mixed into it. (1)

Amla Powder:

Also known as Indian gooseberry, this fruit grows on the myrobalan-tree, native to India and Burma. It has the highest content of naturally occuring vitamin C and is used in a number of Ayurvedic medicines. It is a natural anti-oxidant, and in powder form is great for topical application to the hair and skin. (4)

According to Purdue University, Amla has medicinal properties capable of soothing sore eyes and relieving skin infections. It also benefits the hair when applied as a conditioner. Dried amla fruit, ground into a fine powder, coats and nourishes the hair and scalp. A homemade amla powder mask can also add texture and volume to your hair. (2)(3)

Amla stops falling of hair and premature graying and strengthens hair roots. It removes dandruff and promotes long, lustrous healthy hair. Its benefits for hair cause it to be used in many herbal shampoos, oils and hair loss creams! (3)(4)

TIP: Do you have more than just a few grey hairs? Do you want to be free of toxic chemicals in permanent hair dyes? When mixing Henna substitute the boiled water with black coffee. It's apparently supposed to help loosen the red tones, especially where there is a large percentage of grey. It works! (7)

Acacia Concinna or Shikakai is a small shrub-like tree, which grows in the warm, dry plains of central India. For centuries the people who have had access to this tree have used its pod-like fruit to clean their hair. They collect, dry and grind this pod into a powder, which is considered a superior cleanser for lustrous long hair; and has been reported as "promoting hair growth and preventing dandruff." (5)

Because of these benefits, this powder was named "shikakai" which literally translates as "fruit for the hair". (5)

Typically, shikakai is mixed with water to make a paste, which is worked through the hair. It lathers moderately and cleans hair beautifully. It has a natural low pH, is extremely mild, and doesn't strip hair of natural oils. (5)

Usually no rinse or conditioner is used since Shikakai also acts as a detangler. This ancient product is probably the world's original pH balanced shampoo. (5)

TIP: Do you experience dryness from Henna? Add some honey to your mix! Hair oils such as Olive oil, extra virgin Coconut oil, Argan oil, etc. to reduce dryness! (8)

I was so excited to try these treatments that I would mix all three together! My new regimen involves a Cassia & Shikakai hair treatment and Amla powder treatment. I also add a TBSP of Amla powder or Cassia to my DC.

Basic Recipe: Mixing Cassia Obovata for healthy hair:

-Mix powder with warm or hot water or green tea and let sit for 15-30 minutes. Make sure your mixture is like pancake batter.

-Apply the cassia paste onto clean hair that is either dry or damp. Apply mixture in layers starting from the back and moving forward.

-Wrap your hair in a plastic cap and leave on for at least an hour.

-Rinse or wash paste out. (6)

Using Organic Cassia Obovata for Conditioning Only (No Colour)  

To use Organic Cassia Obovata for conditioning, it is best to add a tablespoon or two of the powder premixed with water to your conditioning base, such as conditioner, flax seed gel, Light Greek yogurt or thick coconut milk, for example; or mix a sufficient amount of powder to cover your hair with Greek yogurt or coconut milk for extra conditioning. Let the paste sit for 10 minutes, then apply to freshly washed damp hair. Wrap your hair up, relax for 30-40 minutes and rinse out in the shower very well to get all the particles out. (6)

My hair after Cassia/Amla Treatment

Always do a strand test. Apply a little amount to your inner arm and leave for an hour. Observe for 24 hours, if you experience rashes, itching and redness, do not use.

How many times have you heard people say natural hair is difficult to manage? or “other people’s hair may grow, but mine won’t.” I’m tired of natural hair so I’ve decided to relax it." "What’s the best way to permanently straighten my hair?"

There are so many questions about curly hair that need answers, but do not despair; thankfully, there is a wealth of information online, in books and on you tube to assist.

If you are on a journey to transition from relaxed hair to natural hair I want you to understand that growth will not happen overnight, but it will come. Furthermore, your hair will not reach its full potential until products full of petroleum, waxes and silicones are no longer clinging to your strands. Keeping hair in optimum condition during the growing-out phase is paramount, because you want your new growth to be healthy.(5) Coconut oil, Shea butter, Olive oil, Castor oil, Grape seed oil, Jojoba oil & Patience are key moisturizers during this phase.

I could give you a trillion reasons to go natural, but lets begin with ten!

According to Dr Oz & Cheryl Kramer Kaye hair Relaxers can be dangerous. The active ingredient in most Drugstore Relaxers is Sodium Hydroxide; also know as Lye, and also the active ingredient in Drain Cleaners. There are some No-Lye Relaxers, but these are similarly bad for you. It is a marketing technique companies have been using to say their product is organic and uses “natural ingredients”, but Dr Oz says this makes him mad because there is no way to produce Lye that is organic. (3) Furthermore, a new study in the American Journal of Epidemiology has linked hair relaxers to uterine fibroids, as well as early puberty in young girls. (4)

Going curly means going green. The detergents (sulfates) in shampoo pollute our water; so living a sulfate-free life helps keep the earth’s water supply clean. Not using blow dryers and flat irons means you’re saving electricity. (5)

Your life no longer revolves around the weather. Curly hair loves moisture. (5)

The food and drug administration says, "Hair relaxers and hair dyes are among its top consumer complaint areas. Complaints range from hair breakage to symptoms warranting an emergency room visit". Also in February 1994, the FDA and American Cancer Society released an epidemiologic study involving 573,000 women. Researchers found that women who had never used permanent hair dyes showed decreased risk of all fatal cancers combined and of urinary system cancers. (2)

Once you learn how to care for your hair, it’ll be healthier than you ever imagined! (1)

You’ll save the time and money you spent on hair appointments.

You never know when it might go wrong. Just like food, allergies show up over time, so do hair chemical allergies. What worked fine two years ago might cause a bald spot in two years. (2)

If it went wrong before, it will very likely happen again. If you had a bad reaction to a perm, do not do it again. Nine times out of 10, the chemicals are just as much to blame as the stylist. (2)

Learning to accept and love your curls means learning to accept and love yourself! (5)

At the outset natural curly hair may seem difficult to manage, but once you get the hang of it, it becomes easy.

For me the biggest challenge was finding a routine that worked! Once I did, I continued with it.

Itchy Scalp...Bald Patches?

I've blogged about a hair spritz I use regularly here, but of late I’ve also been using another recipe, at least for the past 3-4 weeks. It has become a tried-and-tested favourite!

I stumbled upon this recipe after watching a video from Trulynaturallycoiled, so you can say she's the inspiration behind this! The very next day I was at the Big Carrot {health food store} shopping for Calendula!

For as long as I can remember my scalp has always itched, of late not so much... after watching the video, I did some research and this is what I made: Hibiscus & Calendula Tonic! Enjoy :)

Ancient woman of India used Hibiscus extracts as hair treatments. Both the leaves and flowers of the tree are included in Ayurvedic therapy, and used in cosmetic formulations. The flowers and leaves contain many properties that benefit hair and scalp, and help in the treatment of dandruff and hair loss.

Hibiscus has a soothing and cooling action on the scalp. It is beneficial to those who suffer from the scalp condition seborrhea because of its astringent properties which help to reduce oil-gland secretions and excessive oiliness in the hair and scalp. Hibiscus also helps to reduce scaling, itching, and redness, and reduces clogged pores, thereby improving overall hair health.

Calendula officinalis, or marigold, has been used for medicinal  purposes for centuries. Calendula contains a high amount of falconoids, which are plant-based antioxidants that protect the body against cell-damaging free radicals.

Calendula has anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and antibacterial effects, and Calendula powdered extract soothes irritated scalp, and improves the condition of the scalp.

Calendula flowers & Hibiscus leaves can be steeped in boiling water overnight, strained and then used directly on your scalp as a final rinse and left in your hair.

Recipe: Hibiscus & Calendula Hair Tonic

1 Quart of water

3 heaping tablespoons Organic Calendula whole flower

3 heaping tablespoons Organic Hibiscus flower (fair trade)

5 drops pure rosemary oil, tea tree oil, castor oil & vitamin e oil.

Fill a large pot with water
Cover the pot & bring the water to a boil on high heat, then turn the heat down to low and simmer for 1 hour to get rid of impurities. (Check regularly to make sure the water is not boiling away.
Remove the water from the heat, add Calendula, hibiscus leaves & essential oils. Stir to blend.
Replace lid and let the mixture steep to cool.
Pour liquid into a glass jar and store in a cool place for up to 1 week before using.
Strain leaves before putting into spay bottle to avoid clogging.

What is BLACK SOAP?

We’ve all been there before…you walk into a department store and head for the health and beauty section. You examine a wide variety of cleansing bars and you choose one that seems to match your needs. It usually takes a few tries before you find that one soap that really works for you. Do you ever stop to look at the ingredients of this soap?(2)

You are likely to find triclosan, which can disrupt the thyroid hormone and increased exposure can contribute to the development of breast cancer. You will find fragrance, which is usually a safe word for phthalates, a chemical that can cause birth defects and liver damage. There are so many chemicals that are used in nearly all "cleansing bars" sold in stores today. (2)

I often use the words “never put anything on your skin your wouldn’t eat!”

Whatever soap or cosmetics you use are absorbed through your skin into your blood stream. Health first, beauty second.

So what makes African black soap different that even Dr. Oz applauds it:

Raw Ghana Black Soap

African Black Soap comes from plantain skin, which is a natural source of vitamins A & E & iron. (1)(3)

It is made with rare tropical honeys & pure unrefined Shea butter.

It contains a high amount of glycerin, which absorbs moisture from the air and literally deposits it into the skin, making the skin soft and supple. (2)

How Black Soap is Made:

First, leaves and bark of various trees and plants are burned in a vat or kettle. These may be leaves from banana trees, plantain skins, palm tree leaves, Shea tree bark, and/or cocoa pods.

Secondly, water is added to ashes to be filtered. Oils such as coconut oil, Shea oil, palm oil, palm kernel oil, and cocoa butter are added to the water to create the soap.

The soap is then hand-stirred by local women for at least a day and then set out to cure for about two weeks.(2) (4)

The methods of making traditional black soap and its secrets have been passed down from generation to generation to keep the soap close to Mother Nature and avoid exploitation & imitations. Many have tried to create their version of black soap with all kinds of ingredients, but Ghanaian & Nigerian black soap are the best quality because they are ORIGINAL. (1) The most common form of black soap which comes from the Yoruba people of Nigeria, Togo, and Benin republic is called Ose Dudu (Dudu Osun). Ose Dudu literally means Soap (ose) and Black (dudu).

If it ain’t broke don’t fix it!

There is no such thing as traditional liquid black soap. If you encounter liquid black soap bear in mind it is not traditional. There are liquid black soaps on the market made from natural ingredients. Do not confuse these with traditional black soap. Liquid black soap is new to the market and an extension of traditional black soap. If you are into natural products, you should ask your vendor what the ingredients are in their liquid black soap. (3)

DIY LIQUID BLACK SOAP

For a liquid black soap, fill a container with the soft African Black Soap; crumbled or broken into smaller, more easily dissolved pieces. Add 20% purified or distilled water; again, that's 2 parts water to 8 parts black soap. Seal the container and set aside for several hours. This makes an excellent shampoo or shower gel. (2)

African Black Soap contains a whopping 48% unrefined Shea butter! The commercial soaps and lotions only add 1% to 4% ultra refined, which is too little Shea and it has the healing properties removed; it most likely was refined using a chemical process that leaves trace chemicals in the Shea butter. The average homemade Shea soap can only handle 10% Shea butter. How will I know the difference? Oh, you'll know! African Black Soap is made using a natural lye saponification with no preservatives added or needed. (2)

Warning: The FAKE SOAP is hard, black and does not even compare to the original. Real Black Soap is always brownish-black. The longer the plantain skins are roasted the darker the soap. But the soap is never completely black & it is not scented. (3)

My job enables me to work with women-owned co-operatives and female producers in Africa.

Recently I received a sample of 100% pure [chemical free] Rhassoul clay from Morocco.

More times than I can count, I've watched many of our customers buy Rhassoul for skin care purposes...but what I've found very intriguing is when some buy it solely to Shampoo with!

So, I decided to give it a try...

Personally, I believe that nature has given us everything. But marketing and advertising convinces us otherwise.

What is Rhassoul clay?

Rhassoul comes from the Arabic word "rassala" meaning "washing’’. It is found deep beneath the Atlas Mountains of Morocco. This clay is probably one of the most perfect clays in the world, because it is ideal for all skin care and dermatological uses. (3)

Rhassoul has been used for over 1400 years by nobles in ancient Rome and Egypt as a soap, shampoo and skin conditioner. It has an outstanding ability to cleanse, nourish and condition the skin and hair. (3)

Properties of Rhassoul clay?

Easy to use Rhassoul is 100% natural and ecological.

It contains higher percentages of silica, magnesium, potassium, calcium and other trace minerals than other clays. These minerals make the clay highly detoxifying as they can actually exchange themselves for toxic compounds like metals in the skin. Using Rhassoul Clay as Shampoo?

With a non-metallic bowl and spoon mix the clay with warm water or rose water to obtain a smooth creamy paste let the mixture hydrate for 5 to 10 minutes.(3)
Wet your hair and divide it into 4 sections. Curly hair is delicate and can be oversensitive to rough handling so apply clay gently.
Leave it in your hair for about 15 – 20 minutes.
Rinse your hair thoroughly with cool water, then condition and style.

The results are fantastic! Rhassoul removes build-up and leaves your hair clean, and moisturized!

Hint:

I conditioned with Carina’s Certified Organic Daily light conditioner {I left it in my hair for approximately 1 hour} and then rinsed off with apple cider vinegar.

Moroccan oil review: SILICONE alert!

Have you ever wondered why silicone is bad for your hair? Read this article slowly & carefully, it may answer some of your questions.

What is silicone? Silicones are synthetic polymers.

In layman’s terms: synthetic polymers are derived from petroleum oil and made by scientists and engineers. 1

The word POLYMER is a more technical term for plastic! 2

Which brings me back, again, to the same question: “Why would anyone want to put petroleum oil or plastic on their hair or skin?”

The first 3 ingredients in Moroccan oil are silicones.

Below is a break down of Moroccan oil’s ingredients in comparison to Moroccan Argan oil [100% Pure]

Moroccan Oil vs 100% Pure Argan Oil

Cyclopentasiloxane: While ~~silicones~~ plastic such as cyclopentasiloxane do not appear to have adverse effects on the human body, there are many concerns regarding the harmful effects it may have on the environment. For this reason, many countries like Canada have requested the silicone industry to provide more information and scientific data regarding its safety.

Cyclopentasiloxane may cause mild skin and eye irritation, according to the ingredient's material safety data sheet. Also a small percentage of it reaches systemic circulation through dermal absorption, as found in a study by the Department of Environmental and Radiological Health Sciences. 4

Dimethicone is a silicone derived emollient. Silicone emollient is occlusive - meaning they do not allow the skin to breathe (much like plastic wrap would do.) Recent studies have indicated that prolonged exposure of the skin to sweat, by occlusion, causes skin irritation. Some synthetic emollients are known tumour promoters and accumulate in the liver and lymph nodes. They are also non-biodegradable, causing negative environmental impact.

Silicone was and still is used as breast implants. Tens of thousands of women with breast implants have complained of debilitating symptoms. Anecdotal evidence indicates silicone to be toxic to the human body. For more detailed information on the dangers of silicone simply key "silicone toxicity" into the Google search engine. 3

Butylphenyl methylpropional: is a synthetic fragrance . Adverse effects – Skin irritant, sensitiser. In animals, skin applications at high concentrations caused sperm damage and central nervous system effects such as drowsiness and breathing difficulties. 5

Argania spinoza kernel oil: Argan oil (however there is no indication as to whether it is cold pressed or chemically extracted. If it is chemically processed there is a high probability that most of its unique properties have been lost).

Linseed extract, comes from the seed of flax plants, it is a mucilage emollient that is soothing to skin. 9

Fragrance supplement: limited information.

D&C Yellow-11, Color safe for external use only, is however not approved for use around eyes, or in eye products. 6

D&C Red-17 (CI 26100) characterized as a possible carcinogen. 11

Coumarin formerly the active ingredient in rat poison. A carcinogenic ingredient used in the manufacturing of deodorants, shampoos, skin fresheners and perfumes, and found here. 6

Benzyl benzoate has been shown to irritate the skin with some individuals, and should be avoided by those with a perfume allergy. The International Fragrance Association (IFRA) has restricted the use Benzyl Benzoate in fragrances because of the potential dermal sensitization. In Europe, it is listed as an "allergenic" substance and the European Cosmetics Directive requires OTC leave-on products to indicate its presence, even at concentrations of .001%. 7

Alpha-isomethyl ionone the International Fragrance Association (IFRA) banned this ingredient from being mixed into fragrance products (i.e. perfume, cologne). But you can still find this ingredient in a variety of other cosmetics that are not categorized as a “fragrance." 8

Often referred to as “liquid gold,” argan oil has long been valued in Morocco for its cosmetic and medicinal benefits. Extremely rich in vitamin E, antioxidant-packed argan oil has also been prominent in European skincare products for centuries, after its first appearance in Amsterdam in 1711. 10

Produced from the kernels of a rare and ancient tree, argan oil is all natural and completely organic. With cold-press extraction, the argan kernel yields a lightweight oil that absorbs much more quickly and yet is far less greasy than other oils, including olive oil. That fast rate of absorbency coupled with argan oil’s store of moisturizing essential fatty acids and anti-aging carotenes make it ideal for cosmetic purposes, as it quickly softens skin and reduces the fine lines of aging without clogging pores. 10

Spritzing can help keep hair moisturised, nourished and healthy. It's easy to make your own natural misters out of oils, rose water and distilled water. (2)

I had my big chop in 2009. And even though I was natural I was still experiencing hair breakage. Later on, I found out it was due to dryness and constant blow-drying. I’ve stopped applying direct heat to my hair, and apart from losing about 40 -100 strands daily (which is normal), my hair does not break.

My hair is type 4b, meaning I have fragile curls that get dry easily and need lots of moisture to thrive. I remember growing up and dreading the rain, especially after a great hair-do, but now it does not vex me.

Our recommendation at Shakara Natural Tips: always find out what your hair type is first! This will help you in understanding and definitely maintaining your hair. Curly girl the Handbook is a good resource for identifying your curl type.

Benefits of Spritzing Hair

In dry climates, hair can quickly become parched and tangly when left to its own devices. Many so-called moisturising products that are commercially produced are laden with silicones, which not only coat the hair but also create build up over time, preventing moisture getting in as well as out.

If the hair is not clarified regularly, these products tend to result in dry, brittle hair. (2)

Natural Ingredients for Homemade Hair Spritzers

Distilled water forms the base for most hair spritzers. Hard water can build up mineral deposits on the hair, discolouring it and causing brittleness. Distilled water is completely pure and results in soft, silky-feeling hair. (2)

My spritz spray bottle contains:

100ml Rose water (100% natural)
200ml Aloe vera juice
5 drops of pure (not synthetic) Jojoba oil, lavender oil, or sweet almond oil.
3-5 drops of Vegetable Glycerine.

Combine all ingredients and apply all over your hair or to individual strands.

This is a natural, healthy and affordable way to keep your hair in good condition. I spritz my hair at night before going to bed and in the morning a few hours before I step out. After spritzing, to lock in moisture I use Pure 100% Castor oil or Shea butter.

Find out what works for you…but have fun while experimenting!

Storing Homemade Hair Spritzers

Depending on the ingredients, most spritzers will keep for a few weeks at room temperature or in the fridge. It’s worthwhile to make up small quantities at first, in order to tweak ingredients if necessary. Distilled water by itself will keep indefinitely. (2)

Tips:

Start simple and always do an allergy test first. I don’t spritz with vegetable glycerin simply because it causes me to breakout badly on my forehead.
Rose water benefits include antibacterial, soothing, healing and antiseptic properties. It is very rich in flavonoids and vitamins, including A, C, D, E and B3. Rose water is very beneficial for hair, that is why it is frequently used as an ingredient for hair care products and shampoos. Most of us look for permanent solutions to stretchmark’s, scars, acne, uneven skin tones and aging. Bio oil promises us answers.

To say that I have tried this product and not seen good results would be lying. Yet, I have seen the same results (if not better) with 100% Pure Unrefined (Grade A, Fairtrade certified) Shea butter.

Here’s the deal…if you are looking for a drive through breakthrough, Bio oil works. At least it did for me.

However, you might want to consider the long-term side effects; which could be negative.

The Environmental Working Group Skin Deep Database rates Bio oil at a 7 (High Hazard). Furthermore, there is limited scientific research available on this product, which raises the issue of caution when considering it. Lastly, they are non-signers of the Compact for Safe cosmetics. This is most definitely a mouthful!

The aim of this site is not to run down mainstream cosmetic companies but rather push them to use safer ingredients.

While bio oil has natural oils…it also contains mineral oil, several chemicals, synthetic oils & fragrance. Below is a breakdown of its highly controversial ingredients.

Paraffinum Liquidum (Mineral Oil)

Mineral oil is a petro-chemical derivative that is harmful to the skin. Putting mineral oil on your skin is like wrapping it in plastic wrap. The skin is not able to absorb nutrients and it can't detoxify, which renders beneficial ingredients ineffective and results in premature aging. (2)

So much for Bio oil’s claim with helping to combat aging…

The company maintains that it uses a “breakthrough ingredient” known as PurCellin oil. As it turns out, this oil is derived from ducks. It is the substance ducks secrete from their skin to keep their feathers waterproof. (1)

I have found no research proving the effects of Purcelling Oil for treatment of skin concerns that Bio-Oil is promoting. Moreover, PurCellin oil isn’t even included on Bio-Oil’s ingredient list on both their product package or their website.

Isopropyl myristate is found in many everyday beauty products and is generally considered safe for consumer use. Despite its popularity with manufacturers, some side effects have been reported such as skin irritations, clogged pores and acne inflammation. It is generally safe, although those with sensitive skin conditions may wish to avoid products containing this ingredient. (8)

BHT According to the National Library of Medicine HazMap, BHT is considered to be a "known immune system toxicant." Animal studies have also shown that in low doses, BHT causes negative effects to the brain and nervous system. This study was published by the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry in 1980 and has yet to be refuted. There are a host of bans and restrictions on BHT across the globe, yet it is still used here. (4)

Parfum There is no “right to know” for fragranced products: Ingredients in fragrances are considered to be “confidential business information” and “trade secrets” and do not have to be revealed to the consumer even when the product has been reported to cause human health problems. Clearly the self-regulatory process for fragranced products is seriously flawed. At best it is inadequate and at worst dangerously misleading. (5)

Fragrances are used daily in personal care, household and cleaning products by millions of people and while most may believe they are using safe products the truth is that the actual safety of fragranced products remains uncertain and largely untested (5)

Amyl Cinnamal This highly allergenic fragrance ingredient is an alcohol, even though the label doesn't say "amyl cinnamal alcohol" as it should. Also, it is a known toxicant to the immune system in humans. (4)

Benzyl Salicylate UV absorber. Does have salicylic acid as a component, which is not to be used by pregnant women. (4)

Coumarin According to the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment, the popular lavender scented ingredient coumarin may pose a significant health risk and should not be added to personal care products for babies and toddlers. Coumarin is on the EU's list of banned and/or restricted ingredients (3)

It is found in this product as a fragrance ingredient.

Eugenol is a denaturant and fragrance component. It is highly toxic and also on the EU's banned/restricted list. The National Library of Medicine HazMap calls this a "known human immune system toxicant." (4)

Geraniol Masking fragrance, toning agent. Known to be a strong toxin; banned or restricted in other countries; a known environmental toxin (4)

Hydroxycitronellal Yet another masking fragrance! A known immune system toxicant; also banned or restricted in the EU and other areas (4)

Hydroxyisohexyl 3-Cyclohexene Carboxaldehyde- fragrance component (4)

Limonene skin sensitizer; for perfume. Restricted/banned in other countries (4)

Linalool Masking fragrance; shown to be hazardous, banned/restricted for use in other countries (4)

Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone The International Fragrance Association (IFRA) banned the ingredient from being mixed into fragrance products (i.e. perfume, cologne). Interestingly you can still find this ingredient in a variety of other cosmetics that are not categorized as a “fragrance.” (6)

CI 26100 Characterized as a possible carcinogen (7)

Our verdict @ Shakara Natural Tips: NOT RECOMMENDED!

Solving a problem with methods that only create more problems should never be an option. (2)

M.A.C cosmetics give you a perfect look and a flawless finish. It was a great choice for me…until last week.

I blog to get my readers to begin to ask questions about safe cosmetics, be aware of safe natural hair and skin products that give great results; if not better!

In my day job I sell fair trade products; as well as educate customers on the values of fairness and equality in the marketplace. Because of this, I’m becoming more cautious of what I choose to eat; as well as my choice of skin and hair care products. This is a recent shift; my only regret is not knowing this earlier.

I’ve wrestled with the probability of an all-natural make-up. However, is this even possible?

African tribes such as the Himba’s of northern Namibia and the Wodaabe Fulani of Niger Republic use natural red Ochre to beautify themselves, so the answer is YES!

Truth be told, today, there are many toxic chemicals in cosmetic products that have been clinically proven to cause cancer, tumors, irritation and many different skin disorders. (3)

Many problematic ingredients, including parabens, have always been legal to use in the U.S. and Canada. Only recently, when studies have drawn correlations between their use and breast cancer, has concern been raised. Up to this time, many — possibly most — makers of natural personal care products were not aware of the hazards of these ingredients. (1)

Helpful tips to protect you involve reading and interpreting labels. It takes a bit of work but it’s so worth it.

Personally I avoid cosmetics that contain parabens, artificial fragrances, chemical preservatives, talc, and artificial colours. Then what choice is left? They are many alternative choices that work –just as well. Keep reading…

In my opinion, only a scientist can understand these ingredients!

Last week my dilemma was put to rest. I stumbled upon an all-natural makeup company “100% Pure” and the results are refreshingly amazing!

To start I bought their tinted moisturizer with vitamins and antioxidants, which is kind of a foundation but with lighter coverage. I wanted to try this product to see if I would react to any of the ingredients [natural or not!] Thankfully, I didn’t. To be honest, I’ve been pleasantly surprised at the results.

How to Check for Toxins in Your Products?

In a massive undertaking, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) analyzed the health and safety reviews of 10,000 ingredients in personal care products. The EWG discovered that there is scant research available to document the safety or health risks of low-dose repeated exposures to chemical mixtures. But the absence of data should never be mistaken for proof of safety. The EWG points out that the more we study low-dose exposures, the more we understand that they can cause adverse effects ranging from the subtle and reversible, to effects that are more serious and permanent. (1)

I use the EWG Skin deep database and safe cosmetics.org frequently to decrypt safe ingredients!

Eco Styler Gel: Love it or Loathe it

Have you ever used Eco styler gel? Numerous YouTube tutorials on natural hair recommend Eco styler gel. Why not? It offers maximum hold; contains 100% Olive oil and, has no alcohol! Thus, I decided to give this one a try.

As you all know [if you follow my blog] I always read ingredients. To my surprise, this one raised many flags.

Nonetheless I bought a jar for $3.99 [CDN] and left the store. Rule of thumb #1, if you can’t eat it don’t put it on your skin.

Upon getting home I compared my jar of Kinky Curly custard gel to ECO styler gel. Kinky Curly custard’s ingredients are listed as follows:

Botanical fusion of water, horsetail, chamomile, nettle and marshmallow, organic aloe vera juice, agave nectar extract, tocopheryl acetate (vitamin e), pectin, citric acid, potassium sorbate and natural fragrance.

Quite easy to read and pronounce, right?

I’m always amazed at cosmetics that have the word “natural” highlighted boldly in front of the product, but when you start reading the ingredients you quickly discover that there is nothing natural about it. In the case of Eco styler gel, ECO [a prefix relating to ecological or environmental terms (11)] and 100% Olive Oil are emphasized, but olive oil is the 10^th ingredient out of 15...which is way down on the list. Consequently, does this not represent green washing?

Green washing is a form of spin in which green PR or green marketing is deceptively used to promote the perception that a company's policies or products are environmentally friendly. (12)

Once again, curiosity got the better of me and I did some digging. This is what I found:

Here is a list of Eco styler gel’s ingredients, in order of percentage, and as they appear on the jar: Water, Carbomer, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, PVP, Glycerin, Triethanolamine, Sodium Hydrxymethylglycinate, Polysorbate 20, Tetrasodium EDTA, Olive oil, Fragrance, Blue #1, Yellow #11, LOVE AND PRIDE.

For starters it has so many unpronounceable ingredients, but what do they mean??

Carbomers and water are the top two ingredients inside Ecostyler Gel.

Carbomers are plasticisers used to thicken cosmetics. While they are safe ingredients in cosmetics and personal care products, they are also cheap fillers. Carbomers make products feel luxurious on the skin and since the formula contains a lot of water, it will also appear to soak in quickly. (7)

Since there is a great deal of water, there is less room for oils and butters. Put simply, Carbomers are economical, so they are used to keep manufacturer’s costs down. (7)

PVP (polyvinyl pyrrolidone) is a petroleum-derived chemical used in cosmetics. According to the Organics Consumer Association, It can be considered toxic, since particles may contribute to foreign bodies in the lungs of sensitive persons. The Cosmetic Ingredients Review Expert Panel however considers PVP safe. (1)

What is of greater concern to me is why anyone would want to put petroleum (i.e. black oil derived from the ground) on his or her skin.

Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein: If you have Celiac disease you may want to avoid any cosmetics that contain wheat. (10)

As stated by the Organics Consumer Association, Triethanolamine is often used in cosmetics to adjust the pH, as well as with many fatty acids to convert acid to salt (stearate), which then becomes the base for a cleanser. TEA causes allergic reactions including eye problems, dryness of hair and skin, and could be toxic if absorbed into the body over a long period of time. (1)

Sodium Hydroxymethylglycinate is NOT a natural preservative. Its allergic reactions include skin and eye irritations and those with sensitive skin are advised to stay clear from it. In truth, there have been no studies on the long-term effects of this preservative on the skin. (5)

Polysorbate-20 is a fragrance component, surfactant, an emulsifying agent, and solubilizing agent. Why is it a risk?

Polysorbate starts out as harmless sorbitol, but then it's treated with carcinogenic ethylene oxide. It's called Polysorbate 20 because it's treated with 20 "parts" of ethylene oxide. The higher the number, the more ethylene oxide it has been treated with. This substance is then combined with various fatty acids. The Skin Deep Database rates it as only a "one" [meaning safe] and doesn't pick up on the risk that it could be contaminated with ethylene oxide, and subsequently, 1,4 dioxane. In addition, it can be laced with heavy metals. (4)

Tetrasodium EDTA is a preservative that’s made from the known carcinogen, formaldehyde and sodium cyanide. It is also a penetration enhancer, meaning it breaks down the skin's protective barrier, going right into your bloodstream. Many companies trying to be "natural" will use Tetrasodium EDTA instead of parabens to preserve their products. It is safe to say, Tetrasodium EDTA is just as bad. (9)

“Fragrance” can be one or more of 200 chemicals.

Companies don't have to disclose the actual components of each fragrance, under the guise that their fragrances are trade secrets. Fragrance has been known to cause many side effects, including headaches and allergic reactions. Why put an unknown synthetic chemical on your skin when you don’t have to? The Environmental Working Group has an extensive database of cosmetic chemicals and their corresponding danger rankings. "Fragrance" receives one of the highest rankings possible in their score system. (1) (8)

Artificial colors, such as Blue 1 are carcinogenic. (2)

Yellow #11: suspected carcinogen. One is advised to avoid this if possible. (3)

Something else, a dear friend of mine [Yinka] used to set her hair with Aloe Vera as far back as ’97. She says the hairdresser would just use a tail comb to part the aloe vera leaf open and scrap out the gel. Then, she’ll apply it to her hair and roll it. It was sticky icky but it worked wonders. In my opinion, I prefer aloe vera plant or kinky curly.

Finally, remember I simply share what has worked for me and the products I feel comfortable using. I do plenty of research, read ingredients and stay informed. You are free to do the same if you choose to and draw your own conclusions.

Holy Molasses!

Simple solutions in your kitchen

If I could credit the start of my natural hair journey to anyone, it will have to be my husband and sister. Today I’ll be sharing a recipe I learned from my sister, which I’ve altered to suit my hair. I can’t say enough about making your own recipes, for one it's cheaper, another reason is the freedom and liberty to experiment with stuff!

For this recipe, be prepared for a messy sink or bathtub! But the results…are SO worth it.

1 free-range egg [you might need 2 eggs for long hair]

1-2 tablespoons of Blackstrap Molasses.

3 cups cooled black tea [organic & fair-trade certified]

Directions: Step 1

Combine the eggs and molasses and stir to blend.

Wet your hair as usual or leave it dry. Personally, I prefer to do this on dry hair.

Massage mixture into hair and scalp, concentrating on the ends of your hair.

Put on a shower cap and sit for 15minutes.

Rinse off with warm water & black tea.

Step 2 (Co-wash)

Apply conditioner to your wet hair [still targeting the ends]

Wrap your hair in a towel and leave on for at least 1 hour, before rinsing off thoroughly with cool water.

Then apply leave –in conditioner and proceed to style!

Benefits:

Raw Eggs are rich in protein and essential nutrients thus they help strengthen hair follicles

Blackstrap molasses is rich in copper, iron, calcium, manganese, potassium and magnesium. It promotes hair growth, as well as helps to combat grey hair.

Substitute Honey for Molasses sometimes. Honey helps to add moisture to hair.

Tip:

Do not wash your hair with hot water otherwise the eggs will cook on your head!
I deep condition with eggs & Molasses once a week
Always dry your hair with paper towels, an old cotton T-shirt or a micro-fiber towel. Standard towels leave your hair frizzy!
What's blackstrap molasses? Blackstrap molasses is made from the third boiling of sugar syrup and rich in several essential nutrients.

12 Reasons to Chuck Commercial Deodorants/Antiperspirants

Last year I was on a quest to find a natural deodorant; it was a very challenging task. If you’ve been reading my blog you’ll have gathered I’m a huge fan of anything natural. Whenever I can help it, I limit my use of chemicals to the minimum. Not an easy task in our world.

There are so many studies, debates and counter debates about whether or not aluminum and parabens found in most commercial antiperspirants/deodorants really do cause breast cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, as well as other ailments. According to the FDA both are “safe”. [1] [3] [6]

However, FDA regulation does not mean that a drug is without danger. That’s right; antiperspirants are classified as over the counter (OTC) drugs in the US! [1][5] Nobody thinks of it as a drug but it is.

In Canada, as of Spring 2009, "regular" antiperspirants are classified under cosmetics.

There are many products, or their ingredients, which are controversial because of possible negative health effects but these products are not taken off the shelf, until proven unsafe.[1] [3]

Often, the FDA and Health Canada do not consider the evidence of danger to consumer’s health strong enough to take action. (Remember the Johnson+Johnson scandal?)

It took me 10 months to find a natural deodorant that works. I tried baking soda and Druide natural deodorant, neither was successful. To add salt to injury, during this period, I had many embarrassing moments.

A tale for another day…

However, every cloud has a silver lining. Lately, I’ve been getting ready to send my brother [who lives in Hungary] a parcel of all natural products. Once again, I found myself standing in the aisle of Grassroots looking for natural deodorants. After much consideration, I finally decided on Lafes deodorant stick. I’m currently using it and cannot believe the effectiveness! I’ve been using it since Christmas.

Lafes Deodorant stick is made up of natural mineral salts. It contains no aluminum chlorhydrate, parabens or fragrance. Additionally, 1% of all profits go towards breast cancer awareness and prevention.

Once a day [every morning] I wet the stone and apply it liberally to my underarms, there is NO smell throughout the day. Lafes also has a roll-on deodorant, but I find the mineral salt stick works better for me.

12 Reasons to Chuck Commercial Deodorants/Antiperspirants

Aluminum was first recognized as a human neurotoxin in 1886, before being used as an antiperspirant. A neurotoxin is a substance that causes damage to nerves or nerve tissue.[1]

Most of us don’t know the difference between deodorants/antiperspirants – we make our selection based on smell. Antiperspirants try to prevent sweating through aluminum –most antiperspirants have deodorants! [5]

Although there is a relatively small amount of aluminum in any application. Nevertheless, the amount of exposure cumulative over time, and daily, use can lead to chronic exposure to aluminum. There are established links… [1][7]

Studies have found Aluminum absorbs better through the skin than orally [1]

Limiting your aluminum usage will only benefit your health [1]

Deodorants deal with smell by neutralizing and killing bacteria, however, in the past decade, parabens, a preservative ingredient in deodorants have become very controversial. [1][5][7]

The ancient Egyptian queen, Nefertiti, credited her beauty to shea butter. Today, walking along the aisles of drug stores and grocery departments one cannot help but notice the amount of cosmetics & general skin care products that contain shea butter as an “active” ingredient. Homemade Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse Recipe

Shampoo. Absolutely not!

Now your reaction might be: “you don’t shampoo! Now that’s just gross!”

I’ve always believed that if we knew half the truth about a lot of cosmetics we buy, it would undoubtedly change our outlook.

Recently Johnson & Johnson were in the news for having “chemicals of concern” [human carcinogens] in their iconic baby shampoo. While all the focus is on their baby shampoo nothing is being said about their Aveeno and Neutrogena brands, which still contain harmful toxins. The company came out with a statement promising consumers that it would be removing quaternium -15 and other formaldehyde – releasing preservatives from all of its baby products worldwide within 2 years. http://tinyurl.com/3guhv3r

Personally I think 2 years is a while.

Five months ago, I made a decision to stop using shampoos. It came like a brainwave. In the old days our grandparents and their parents before them did not use shampoos, they used soap, so why the shift?

In a few words, our water became hard, which made using soap increasingly difficult; so shampoos were invented.

Shampoos are detergents; while they are very effective they are a lot harsher, striping one’s hair of its natural oils. Conditioners - made up of artificial oils - were developed to mask this damage. After doing some research on this issue I’ve simply eliminated shampoos altogether.

My routine involves using the following:

Dudu Osun or “Ose Dudu” [as we call it back home in Lagos, Nigeria] is an age long black soap made by hand, using only pure natural ingredients. I often say all of its ingredients you can pronounce!!

The soap is made using pure Honey, Shea butter, Osun (Camwood extract), Palm kernel oil, Cocoa pod ash, Palm bunch ash, Aloe Vera, Lime juice, Water and fragrance. It contains no artificial colours or preservatives and is biodegradable.

I find that it has a deep cleansing effect; I’ve also used it in treating acne and dark spots.

Raw Ghana Black soap is more organic than Dudu Osun. It has NO fragrance. If you’ve ever tried to buy this soap you’ll see that it’s not fancy at all!

It is handmade by local women in Ghana using Plantain skins, Shea butter, native Honey, virgin Coconut oil, cocoa pod ash and Palm kernel oil. Its benefits are immeasurable.

Neither soaps have alcohol or petroleum-by-products, and they lather really well!

Rule of thumb: If you can’t eat it, don’t put it on your skin.

Recently Dr. Bonner’s Magic Soap has become one of my favourite substitutes for shampoo. It’s made with Fairtrade certified & organic oils. I’m a huge fan of the peppermint liquid soap!

Baking soda: I’ve discovered you can use it for pretty much anything! Its environmentally friendly, in-expensive and can be bought anywhere!

What to do?

Mix 1 Tbsp of baking soda with 8 oz of lukewarm water and wash your hair.

At first it might seem weird because baking soda neither lathers nor has a scent, but it’s a healthy alternative that works rather well. It will remove odor plus any build up from oil and dirt, leaving you and your hair feeling fresh.

Lastly, condition only. This may seem radical, but the results are incredible.

The process?

Wet your hair first, and then gently massage conditioner into your scalp and hair. You will have to work at it to remove dirt and oil build up, then rinse out with lukewarm water. I recommend you do this twice.

The third time you apply your conditioner let it sit for a few minutes, then rinse out with cold water, to seal your pores. This final step is necessary because it gives your hair a healthy sheen.

How to get great youthful skin naturally without exfoliating!

Ola walked into our store; she needed to pick up a check that was owed to her. We began talking about a number of things, and the topic of exfoliating came up. She was complaining about the brand she was currently using and was considering trying our 100% Red Moroccan (Ghassoul) Clay. Which by the way is great!

I told her I do not exfoliate. To be completely honest with you I don’t remember the last time I did. She did not believe me, saying I had such great skin that it was impossible that I did not exfoliate.

I replied, “I don’t. I use natural oils and they do wonders!”

If truth were told, I read labels, if I cannot pronounce the ingredients on any product, I do not consider it.

We all know that when one’s diet changes, for the better, our skin will automatically glow. Drinking lots of water also improves our skin and hair, but I take going natural a little step further.

As consumers, it is important to know that we have the power to say either yes or no to any product by simply reading the label, whether it is cosmetics or food. It might seem like a lot of work, but it takes discipline and motivation.

There are 3 oils I use to maintain my face daily:

· Pure 100% Castor oil
· Tea tree oil, and;
· Pure Unrefined 100% Baobab oil

I use Castor oil only at night. I am not particularly loyal to any brand; at the moment I’m using Benjamin’s Castor oil. It is made in Jamaica, 30ml retails for $3.99.

Nonetheless, before getting started always do an allergy test to avoid any problems.

First, I steam my face with castor oil for about 10 – 20 minutes, and then I gently wash it off with warm water. Then, I splash cold water over my face to close my pores. Finally, I reapply castor oil to problematic spots before heading to bed.

I do this every night alternating between castor oil and tea tree oil. Following the same process, which involves steaming, as described above.

Steaming the face is so simple, plus it has huge benefits! It opens up the pores; removes dead skin cells, dirt, bacteria, and increases the blood circulation on the face.

Likewise, every morning I steam for about 10 – 15 minutes and apply baobab oil. Please note: I do not use any face creams, I rely solely on natural oils. If I am applying make up, which I try not to, baobab oil is my base. It is an excellent moisturizer.

A lot of spas use steaming as treatment for both the face and body, it is an age long beauty secret, but you can do it yourself without spending a dime!

Tips:

Take the hot water out of the pot and pour it into a bowl, tie your hair back, then place a towel over your head and lean towards the steam for 10 – 20 minutes.

Be careful not to burn yourself and please do not steam your face while the water is still boiling on the stove.

Give your face a break. After about a week of steaming, I take a break for a few days and then resume the process.

I’ve always been vain and I care a lot about the way my hair and skin look. To be completely honest, my culture and background do not help! Nigerian women are beautiful with flawless radiant skin, and they put a lot of effort into their outward appearance.

Since I am Nigerian, what can I say; my appearance comes first!

However, in the past 2 years things have changed, especially after meeting my husband, he’s an advocate for natural beauty. But what is natural beauty?

Back home, in Africa, I was brought up with hair extensions, relaxers, and numerous cosmetic lines to “maintain” my complexion. In fact, if one did not use hair extensions you were considered a “villager” or “bush.”

As a moisturizer, I remember on occasion my mum brought home Shea butter, but we mostly used Vaseline petroleum jelly. Then, during my teen years I even tried Skin Success [whatever possessed me???]

Twice a week, I will blog about my journey, one that involves using natural God given products. I will alternate between the hair and the skin, highlighting the need to quit depending on commercial products that do not only harm and destroy our hair and skin, but may also contain potential health risks.

Generally, I find natural products are inexpensive, they may not work as well as some of the other products you are using immediately, but with time you will see a difference.

Lastly, one piece of advice: before buying anything read the ingredients. If there is anything you can’t pronounce, drop it. Research, research and research because this will empower you in making informed choices. We recently visited family for Christmas holidays in Guelph and Waterloo, and I needed to clean my face, travelling sometimes disrupts one’s routine; I stopped at Shoppers drug mart and decided to get face wipes. Face wipes right? That should be easy...

Typically I picked up a few brands and began reading the ingredients, they were unbelievably unpronounceable! I settled for a box of baking soda and 100% cotton exfoliating pads, a much better and healthier option.
