The weekend ws a little rough, Monday better and today a bit harder. The doc says the surgery was a success and there was good blood flow there so there is every reason to expect a good recovery. We go back on Friday for the first look at the healing... For now we're taking it moment by moment ;)

Roaming neighborhoods getting some real estate shots this morning I ran across this tree!!! For some reason it really brightened my day! Must have been quite a trick getting all those houses up there... lol

Hopefully I'll get back to bloggerville soon...

PS: Thanks Suz!!!

Just for Doc...

Are ya gonna use me in your book Doc? Found it in her cookbook Justonepot which I scarfed from the bargin bin at B&N! I had no idea this was a British cookbook when I bought it, but since I have a British friend Doc, to call for translation help I am no longer afraid to jump right in!

For instance, on beef...
"Best value for fast cooking are the minute rump steaks and a clutch of shoulder steaks with distinctive ridged meat like bollo, skirt, bavette and feather, or it's similar French cut called onglet, which has gristle running down the center. It's rare to find these cuts in the supermarket, but any butcher worth his salt will be happy to oblige - if he hasn't already nobbled them for his regulars." !?!?!? LOL

This was my first attempt at trifle, so I was a little nervous but I didn't take any leftovers home so I guess I'm calling it a success!! Mine did not look this classy since it is apparently impossible to find a jellyroll in this day and age, (when did they quit making them?) but I have found a new love and it may be quite some time before I go back to experimenting with granola...

White Chocolate and Raspberry Trifle

2 Cups Raspberries
Juice of ½ lime
1Tbsp Kirsch, Vodka or Frambois de Bourgogne (I used Chambourd)
2 Tbsp confectioners’ sugar
1 Jelly Roll (not Chocolate, I used Angel Food Cake)
4 squares White Chocolate (4oz)
1 cup Heavy or Whipping cream
2 18 oz pkg Custard
Few sprigs mint

Place 2/3 cup of raspberries in a strainer placed over a bowl. Use the back of spoon to push all their juice through into the bowl, leaving the seeds behind. Scrape under the strainer so nothing is wasted. Add the lime juice and liquor, then sift 1Tbsp of confectioners’ sugar over the top, stir well.

Slice the jelly roll about ½ inch thick and use most of the slices to cover the base and make one single layer up the sides of a nice glass bowl. Moisten the slices with most of the raspberry juice and scatter with another 2/3 cup raspberries.

Set aside ¾ square chocolate and break the rest up into small pieces. Place the broken chocolate in a bowl and suspend the bowl over top of a pan of boiling water (use a double boiler?) Stir until the choc melts. When it has melted, stir 1 Tbsp of the cream into the chocolate and then stir the chocolate mixture into 1 of the cartons of custard.

Pour half the chocolate custard over the prepared jelly roll and lay the remaining slices on top. Drizzle the remaining raspberry sauce over the slices and scatter with the remaining raspberries (reserve a few to garnish top with). Use the rest of the choc custard and then cover with the second carton of custard. Whip the rest of the cream until stiff and decorate top of the trifle.

Add the reserved raspberries. Grate the remaining ¾ oz chocolate over top with the large hole of a cheese grater. Plant the mint sprigs here and there and dust the trifle with the rest of the powdered sugar. Cover with plastic wrap and chill for a minimum of 2 hours and for up to 24 hours. Serve with any remaining custard.

Run with the little guy...

Run with the little guy... create some change.

I love JONES' soda!

I cast my vote for no corn syrup!

Breakfast anyone...

Found this lovely video over at Tamara's Fotolog!!! Check out her awesome place. Three more bodies were found in Gonaives on Sunday, according to civil defense director Maria Alta Jean-Baptiste, all victims of previous storms.
The latest deaths pushed Haiti's toll to at least 319 from four storms in less than a month.
Most of Sunday's 58 deaths were in the Cabaret region north of Port-au-Prince. A swollen river unleased mudslides and floods and crushed homes and sent people fleeing in the middle of the night.
In the Always Funeral Home, 21 muddy bodies were piled in a dank room, unclaimed. Two of them were pregnant, one still clutching a small girl to her chest. Morgue workers roughly separated the bodies to count them, grabbing one baby boy by the head and tossing him aside like a doll.
Waters reached chest-high levels before receding Sunday morning, leaving people to shovel mud from their houses. Others sat outside, surrounded by salvaged pots and mattresses, staring glumly at their collapsed homes.
``We took refuge in one room and waited there all night and prayed,'' said Sister Marie Denise, who was trapped by waist-high waters in the house she shares with four nuns. They evacuated to the nearby school they run after the waters receded.
``We don't know if one of our girls is among the dead,'' she said of her students.
No foreign aid has reached the town even though hundreds of people have been forced from their homes, said local civil defense director Henri Luis Praviel. Still, with the waters swiftly retreating and all roads leading into Cabaret still open, the town may have been better off than isolated Gonaives, Haiti's fourth-largest city.
Pummeled by rains for four days last week during Tropical Storm Hanna, the city was cut off again Sunday when flooding caused the collapse of the Mirebalais bridge in central Haiti. And while the rain finally stopped, high waters will likely keep running down from deforested mountains into the coastal flood plain.
Much of Gonaives remained inaccessible, even to United Nations peacekeepers already in the city, because of rising waters and strong currents. Desperation was increasingly evident among people who have had very little to eat or drink for days, prompting peacekeepers to beef up security.
A line of 3,000 people snaked around a warehouse-turned-U.N. shelter, and several hundred pushed and shoved to break down the door, only to be quickly subdued by Bolivian troops in riot gear.
As peacekeepers delivered aid to areas their trucks could reach, scores of young men splashed alongside, begging for help. One called out with a bullhorn: ``Hey, hey, my friend. Give me some water.''
Food and fuel prices both skyrocketed, with gasoline reaching 500 Haitian gourdes (US$13) a gallon. And while relief workers in Gonaives said they had enough emergency food supplies for the next couple of days, distributing it is becoming ever more complicated.
Workers spent four hours handing out water and high-protein biscuits. But people were growing tired of relief food and started to demand rice, which has gone up 60 percent in price since the storms.
``We would like to eat some real food,'' said shelter resident Esaie St. Juste. ``Rice, beans, sardines. Haitian people like real food.''
Above Haiti's coastal floodplain, in the Artibonite Valley, authorities prepared to open an overflowing dam, inundating more homes and possibly causing lasting damage to Haiti's ``rice bowl,'' a farming area whose revival is key to rescuing the starving country.
``Please evacuate as soon as you can,'' Agriculture Minister Joanas Gay urged Artibonite residents on state-run Radio Nationale

__________________________________________________________

This photo was released by UN peacekeepers on Wed, depicting folks gathering in 'shelters' in Gonaive (see the link below for the news article about aid convoys having to turn back) this is before Ike hit and dumped tons more on Haiti. At this point it looks as though dams will have to be released potentially killing many more and wiping out key farming land.

See private blog for more, let me know if you still don't have the link.

http://www.boston.com/news/world/latinamerica/articles/2008/09/05/hanna_leaves_behind_despair_in_haiti/

Deforestation and poverty behind Haiti flood crisis

Sadly undecided...

This is the first time since I was eligible to vote that I don't know who I am voting for at this stage of the game...

I've been a liberal and I've been a conservative, I've was even passionately political for a time. One thing I have remained throughout is very passionately patriotic! Yes, I cry still when our National Anthem is played, especially when I am on foreign soil. There really is no place in the world like America. Yes she is young still, and brash as Johnny Depp pointed out in his much misunderstood and maligned comment after 9/11, but she is very idealistic and proud and her people are FREE! We enjoy a freedom here like no one else in the world does. I thank God often that I was lucky enough to be born here. There is no place in the world like America...

I've been longing for some time now to be able to place my vote for President of the United States of America for almost anyone other than a white male of either party. Nothing against white males, it's just time! (Please don't think me racist or sexist, I am very far from either one of those things.) As the political pendulum has slowed it's wild swing in my life I seem to have fallen a bit to the conservative side of center, not as liberal as I have been but far less conservative than I have ever been either...

I've been holding out great hope for Senator Obama during most of this campaign. Though I'd love to see a woman in the White House, Hillary would never have gotten my vote. I was never prouder of her though than when she spoke out for Obama at the DNC. She did her job fantastically and even brought tears to my eyes a couple of times!!! (No one was more surprised at that than I!) I was also moved by Bill's profession of love to his wife, though he didn't really do her any favors during her campaign which only reinforced my intense dislike of the man. I recall with great emotion how difficult the Clinton days were for me. I remember the Reagan/Bush days as the good old days (boo if you have to...) they were good for me economically and also they were very good days for an American who spent most of those days on foreign soil. They were the days of favor for our troops of which I was one. Those were the days I chose to exercise my passion for my country by serving in our military.

I remember vividly the early days of the Clinton regime with horror as he began to decimate the armed forces and it wasn't long before I was one of his casualties. He got rid of most of the mid-level managers, the ones with all the experience. My military service ended but I remained overseas for a few more years. There was a different feeling then about us, like we were often being laughed at. Coming home to white bread America in the mid 90's wasn't much easier. It was soo hard to find work in those days with my military resume. I sometimes felt like a creature from outer space! I guess that's when the pendulum swung right for me...

I'm not still waaay over there thankfully, but as I said earlier, I am still not sure who I am voting for in this election! What I am most sensitive to these days is all the bitter blaming going on in our two party system. I know it has been that way for a long time, but for some reason it is particularly hard to take right now. With all our elections so close in recent history, we are a nation divided. It is really hard to stomach the acrimonious dismissal by either side of 50% of the people in our great nation!! That kind of divisive pride is tearing me apart inside a bit.

There is not just a right way and a wrong way to come up against almost any issue I have ever seen. Anything that doesn't bend, will eventually break. And I'm not talking about one side or the other giving in. I guess I'm talking about giving up! I'm talking about thinking outside the box. Not your way or my way, or what we can't accomplish, but what CAN we do! I think that only humility can bring us across the aisle to someplace where we can co-exist, someplace where we can get close enough to each other to see our similarities and not just the gulf that divides us.

I was sooo hoping that Senator Obama was going to be that man, that man who could get us crossing the aisle and listening to one another. I admit to being pretty disappointed after his speech last week. (I really, REALLY like him!) I didn't hear what I was expecting to hear though. I heard a man toeing the party line, and bitterly so, advocating again, for 50% of Americans. ;(

Instead, last night John McCain surprised me. The words of conciliation I expected to hear from Obama were coming from his mouth instead. Words of humility. Words like, 'It doesn't matter who get's the credit.', and words like I was wrong, when speaking of the way he lived before his experience as a POW. I was reminded of why I served my country and why it really matters when you put others first. I was reminded why I served to defend our freedoms that I so cherish. Even that freedom of speech that some use to rip 50% of our people apart. I was convinced that I would do it all over again if I could. I was moved to tears. I felt like I heard a great and humble man speak last night, and more importantly, I think I heard him bend...

There is a part of me that wanted to turn off the comments to this post, but that is the part of me that lives inside the box. That isn't the part of me that served to defend our famous freedoms. This is America, the land of the free and the home of the brave! So, say your piece, and remember that I love you all, as living breathing people, and not as labels!

I still don't know who is going to get my vote in this election, but I will be listening and watching closely in the days ahead...

Where the hell is Matt...

thanks toadlessgirl , i needed a good cry...

Where the Hell is Matt? As an example to all, I had to go down the line, the line of all the other recruits all standing at attention in front of their lockers, stopping in turn to face each one. As I did I was to shout out, "I'm a Burger Queen, I do things my way!" and then execute a push-up before moving on to the next person.

OH, and did I mention that I had to do it with the offending pair of underwear pulled over my head? Yeah, there was that to keep it interesting...

http://tinyurl.com/5wfbpm

OH! As your reward for scrolling all the way to the bottom, here's the link to a radio interview with Johnny Depp and his band The Kids that took place today (or within the last couple of days anyhow) It is really great to hear him address things that we all know about ie: very current events, very well worth listening too. Yes, there just happens to be a reference to John Dillinger's penis in the interview. For real! Yeah, I had to mention it...

Hurricane Fay...

I have set up a private blog to talk about some recent events concerning my girls, for reasons I won't talk about here. If you didn't get a link to it, drop me an e-mail and I will send you the link. It was then expected to move in the direction of Florida and the Gulf of Mexico, with computer models showing it emerging somewhere near south Florida by Monday. The storm was not projected by the Miami-based hurricane center to strengthen into a hurricane, with winds of at least 74 miles per hour (119 km per hour). The high mountains of Hispaniola and the amount of time it seemed destined to spend over land in Cuba would most likely drain it of energy. At 2 a.m. EDT (0600 GMT), Fay was located around 60 miles (95 km) east of Port-au-Prince and was moving toward the west at about 14 mph (22 kph).Top sustained winds had reached near 45 mph (75 kph) but the storm's potential rainfall of 4 to 8 inches (10-20 cm) was of greater concern than its winds, particularly over the denuded hillsides of Haiti, where thousands of people have been killed by mudslides and floods during the past few hurricane seasons. In some areas torrential rainfall of 12 inches (30 cm) could be expected, the hurricane center said, adding this could cause life-threatening mud slides and flash floods.Tropical storm warnings were in effect for the entire coast of Haiti, for the entire north coast of the Dominican Republic and for part of the south coast.A tropical storm warning was also in effect for the Turks and Caicos Islands, the southeastern Bahamas and part of Cuba.A tropical storm warning means storm conditions with gusty winds and rain can be expected within 24 hours.Energy markets have been watching the storm system closely as several computer models projected it could enter the Gulf of Mexico, home to U.S. oil and gas production rigs. The 2008 Atlantic hurricane season is on track to be more active than average, due to warm sea waters and favorable atmospheric conditions. Two of the tropical storms so far, Bertha and Dolly, reached hurricane strength before fading out over the open Atlantic and washing up on the shores of south Texas, respectively.(Reporting by Michael Christie; editing by Jim Loney and Sandra Maler

Subscribe

Grieving Maria...

When I began my own adoption journey, Stephen Curtis Chapman and his wife Mary Beth were so inspirational to me. They have three children of their own and at the prompting of their daughter Emily, embarked upon their adoption journey which led to the addition of three beautiful little Chinese girls to their family. Their experience led them to found Shaohanna's Hope, a nonprofit organization that seeks to ease the expense of adoption. As of July 2008, the group has provided grants to over 1,700 families wishing to adopt orphans in the United States and worldwide.

Caught up in my own adoption drama, I failed to hear about the tragedy that had befallen the Chapman family this past May. Their youngest daughter Maria had run into the path of their family car and was killed as their eldest son Will Franklin was pulling into the drive. They spoke about their tragedy for the first time publicly on Good Morning America today...

I'm most deeply touched by the presence of mind Steven had to encourage his son even as he rushed his dying daughter to the hospital. These words of his echo and reverberate within my soul, "People say that we are a family of great faith, really we're a family with a lot of questions. That's what faith is, it's living with the questions..."

Since Maria's tragic death over $275,000 has been donated to their foundation in Maria's name to help other adoptive families. God bless Will Franklin and the rest of the Chapman's as they grieve Maria together and find hope in their faith for the future...

Subscribe

My Caribean Dream...

Ever have one of those weeks where you wish you could just fly away???

This was one of 'those' for me!
Hot and muggy and waaaayyyy too much work to be done...

These were my brand new bright pink shoes (purchased in honor of Lotus!) after Monday...

The last place I wanted to be was in a dark dingy basement full of cobwebs and creepy crawlers! It was written by a friend of my friend and is soo lovely. I read something on Minxie's blog that caused me to remember it and this photo. So as a reminder to myself and so many others who have been in the fire lately, I was remembering the many times I have found beauty and meaning in the midst of my dark days.

Somehow, after I failed to get the song up I'd forgotten I'd titled the post Tears Fall Like Rain and thought I'd let the pic speak for itself! So sorry if I worried any of you!!!

Yes, times are tough, but as Minxie said, I've much to be greatful for and am acknowledging the beauty around me...

Too much time on my hands...

Send a JibJab Sendables® eCard Today!

Fourth of July Weekend at Merrillan...

(Edited to add dj's donkey pic of the week)

What a fun relaxing time...

My Auntie and I spent the weekend up at Lower Lake near Black River Falls. This is my Father's side of the family which I don't know as well as my Mom's, but they welcomed me so very graciously.

Some of the highlights were:

Walking around the lake.

Watching the kids bat at the pinata.

Sampling Chardonnays (my favorite was the Chilean 'Royal Bitch'!

Talking about G&T's all day long and not drinking even one...

The Water Balloon Toss (wondering if I should upload some video)

The fire pit ;)

Showing off my Johnny Depp pics! (yes, I did...)

The swing overlooking the lake, where folks sat to read JP's Enquirer (No Kidding!)

Last, certainly far from least! Sunday Morning Breakfast, mmm.....

Looking at nearly microscopic baby snails...

Oh, and in case you couldn't figure it out, taking pics of the kids ;)

Thanks to all the Ewers' for a wonderful time!!!!

Subscribe

He's not Johnny Depp, nor is he Wycleff Jean...

I do believe he will be just as inspirational though, in his own way! Actually, he already is...

My eyes are still red as I sit down to write this...
This morning on my way to work I had to run a bunch of errands and ended up pulling into Culvers to grab a bite on my way to the jobsite. My mind wandered as I waited for my order, thinking of all I needed to get done. As it did, I was looking in my rear-view mirror and what I saw there made me blink and rub my eyes... could it be?!?!

It was my dear friend W, walking up with my order! I was sooo shocked! W belongs to my Pastor and his wife who I dearly love, and to God... I met W on my first trip to Haiti back in March of 2002. Oh my, how all of our lives have been irrevocably changed since then...

That was the beginning for us all. W finally made it here to the states and to his family a couple of years ago now. (Talk about an amazing and miraculous story! I wish I could send you somewhere to read about it...) When I saw him today in the drive-up at Culvers I was blown away!!! I congratulated him on his new job, told him he'd made my day, shook his hand and drove off...

As I drove, I began to sob, happy tears, sad tears, cleansing tears... Instead of to work, my truck steered it's way home. I grabbed my camera and ran back to Culvers. Yes, of course W wanted his photo taken!! (I knew he would!) I then raced back home and sat down to write. Yes, it's time to finally finish my own adoption story... To read it please go to My Adoption Blog.

This is W with his mom sometime during the week we first met him.

(March 2002)

This is me on my first trip to Haiti, back when my glasses were LARGE and my hair was SHORT!! (and none of us knew yet how to take pictures of black and white people together...) I am holding a baby that this lady tried to give me on my first trip into the village. The baby's name is Savior and she was NOT his mom. I guess I had that 'first time to Haiti' gullible look about me. I'm older and wiser, and sadly, not so naive. There are days now when I wish I'd never laid eyes on the place...

on a lighter note...

The 'Donkey Parking Lot' outside the market. ;)

Now, go to my Adoption Blog!

Subscribe

Johnny Depp in St. Anne, IL...

Scroll down for VIDEO...

Johnny in Lockport compliments of Tiffany (aka Lawgirl)

Sheesh!
You would think that someone who used to be a video editing professional could get one lousy video uploaded to blogger... It was hot, hot, HOT! Apparently local businesses were saving their bathrooms form the crowds (who can blame them?) But Tiffany (lawgirl) pulled some strings for Evan and Osh, and that's all I'm gonna say about that!... ; )

As the sun went down, the crowd seemed to DOUBLE every time I turned around to look. I began to be nervous that Johnny wouldn't be allowed to come out and greet us. There was only one thin yellow strip of caution tape between us and where he would need to pass and not much security in sight. I needn't have worried!!! As usual, 'my' Jerry came out and saved the day! I think just his being in the area was a calming presence on the crowd... (It sure worked on me!) First he gathered up all the people who were hanging out parade style (I LOVE small towns!) on their lawns on the other side of the street and got them behind the yellow tape too. The Kankakee Sheriff's department showed up on the scene and lent a very professional police presence to the ambiance, they really ROCKED!

Go Jerry!

My heart almost stopped beating when he stopped RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME!! Tiffany flagged him down and pointed at me (I had a 'thank you' gift I wanted to give Jerry) I think Jerry thought she was pointing at the little boy in front of me. I was soo touched when he crouched down and had a very meaningful conversation with him about his favorite movies and his favorite lines in those movies. It was sooo cute and the little boy was very articulate too! As he finished talking to the boy, I handed him my gift bag. He goes, "What's this?" I said "It's for you Jerry." He pulls the item out of the bag which was a picture frame with 2 pics of our special moment when I got my machete sheath autographed. I had autographed the pic for him and wrote a short note of appreciation on it. His smile of recognition was SO BIG, it really warmed my heart! He turned , started to walk away, then turned back and said, "No bribes ladies..." Ladies plural... = ) It seems he recognized all of us! hmmm....

These are the notes written to Johnny by Movie Star Wife's little girls. They were soo cute! She did get to hand them directly to Jerry after she'd had HER moment with Johnny. This brings me to my sad moment of the evening. The one thing I had in mind as my goal for the day was to make sure that Dawn had her Johnny moment documented as a keepsake. Well, I failed in this goal and actually feel a little ashamed about it. I stood in that spot on the line for most of the day to ensure it would happen. At the very end (near the time JD was getting ready to come out) someone who's name I will not mention decided it would be cool to push her way to the front of the line and encroach upon our spot. At one point she actually said to me, "I hope I'm not crowding you." To which I replied, "Actually you are, a little." (She was touching the backs of my calves, thighs, bottom and side all at the same time, ewww...) She kind of laughed it off like it was a joke and I just let it go. I am pretty claustrophobic and it takes a lot of mental energy to be in a crowd like that anyhow. I was glad I said something at least, and she did move a little but I wish I could be more assertive at times like that and say something like, "Hey, if you wanted this spot, you could have stood here all day and saved it too, now go find another spot." But that's not me... and I'm not proud of it! ; (

So, as the moments wore on, I gave in a bit more, and then some more and finally I was behind all my friends and ended up with this crappy video of the backs of their heads... The part that upsets me is not that this person did this, it's that I LET IT GET TO ME! The fact that I gave her the power to ruin a special moment in time is what really grates on me... Sheesh, get over it already! (says me to myself! LOL)

After it as all over, we took off and stopped at Denny's to help us get our blood sugar back on the map! We did have a lot of laughs there, and Evan supplied us with this one which still makes me chuckle! (Minxie you are always with us even when you aren't...)

Another FUN moment was when we stopped at one of the Oasis' to use the restroom. One of the automatic toilets chose the moment my FRIEND sat down to turn into a bidet instead of a toilet! She screamed so loud! Then the thing just kept on flushing at odd moments... We laughed sooo hard, I had tears in my eyes and my stomach still hurts from all the hysterical laughing and no breathing. OMG!!

All in all, it was a great experience and I am long over my sad moment. Now I just keep remembering the smile on Jerry's face......

Subscribe
