Photo: Newscoma
This Sunday, my dad told me something interesting. He said that this year they were going to plant a big garden and if I was willing to share in the work, they'd share the resulting veggies with us. Score.

I've been trying to grow vegetables at my house now for a couple of years and I've had really bad luck. It's partly the terrible soil at my house and partly my own black thumb. I figure with the good soil at my mom and dad's house plus my dad's shiny green thumb, I can learn more about gardening without killing everything in sight.

They also have a lot more space for a big garden, so this should be something really good. I'm excited. I asked if we could plant watermelons and pumpkins, since they weren't planning on planting those, and I've always wanted to plant them. They said sure, no problem. So now I'm really excited. If I ever find my camera again, I'll post pictures as we go along.

As per usual here in Nashville, everyone else got some snow, and we get a dusting. 14 miles south at my mom and dad's house, they got 4 inches of snow and it was even enough to call off church. Us? Maybe an inch. My kids were begging me to take them down to the parts of southern Tennessee where they got a lot more snow, but I just laughed and told them maybe someday it'll actually snow here.

Photo: NashvilleWX

Mr. Ivy has been watching a whole lot of shows like Man Vs. Wild and Survivorman lately. I don't know if he's planning a trip to Outer Mongolia or what, but he sure is digging those shows. Me, I'm interested a bit, mainly when they show you things you can eat that normally nobody sane would consider food.

Between the two, I prefer Man Vs. Wild, since he sets up fake scenarios that one could really find themselves in. Well, that and I think the Survivorman guy is kinda irritating. What fascinates me about both shows is how many insects are good protein. I often think about survival situations and whether I could eat a bug or not, and after watching these shows, I think I'd rather eat a bug than gut a boa constrictor or something. I mean, really, just ewww.

What do you think of these survival shows? Interesting or disturbing?
