Strategy Meets Soul

My name is Shannon Dunn, and for more than three decades, I’ve walked the path of journalist, storyteller, creative strategist, and founder. Today, I bring those experiences together through my writing and work at Communeco, as well as ventures devoted to weaving together business, creativity, and human connection in ways that honour the whole person.

Why Storytelling Matters More Than Ever

At the heart of my work is a simple truth: stories shape us. They can heal, elevate, and connect, or they can diminish, distract, and divide. My calling is to help individuals, brands, and organisations tell stories that feel true… the kind that don’t just capture attention but move people into transformation.

Whether through brand clarity sessions, AI-infused creative systems, or one-page digital platforms, I help clients distill their essence into words, visuals, and frameworks that carry their vision into the world so they may truly land in the hearts, minds and consciousness of the audience.

My Work

Communeco – A creative studio dedicated to emotionally intelligent brand clarity, design, and storytelling.

SoulTech – A methodology that harnesses technology to foster deep human connection while keeping its essence sacred and intuitive.

diarii – An emotionally intelligent journaling app (coming soon) designed to hold.

The Adventures of Tao & Friends – a children’s book series I created and co-authored, inspiring kindness, and wonder in connection with nature.

Each of these platforms and projects reflects my life’s devotion to building businesses, movements, and messages that honour both strategy and soul.

My Philosophy

I believe sustainable success is born when vision aligns with values. When clarity meets courage. When presence outweighs performance.

This philosophy guides my writing on Substack, my creative projects, and my consulting work with leaders and entrepreneurs.

Working With Me

When you partner with me, you’re not just hiring a strategist or creative. You’re stepping into a space where your story is honoured, your vision is amplified, and your impact is multiplied.

Because in the end, my work isn’t about me. It’s about you, your voice, and the ripple it’s here to create.

A Final Note

My purpose is simple: to hold space for the stories that matter, to guide leaders and visionaries back to their authentic expression, and to create the conditions where soul-aligned work can flourish.

From the moment we arrive in the world, we are taught how to play the part…
Be polite. Be agreeable. Be productive. Be successful. To forget who you are and wear a social mask.

Brick by brick, we build the walls. Layer by layer, we put on that mask. At first, it feels protective… a way to belong, to be safe, to be accepted. But over time, it becomes heavy and the walls turn into cages. The mask begins to suffocate.

The irony is this: the very thing we think will keep us connected often leaves us most disconnected from ourselves, from others, from the pulse of our own genius.

The Genius Zone Hiding Beneath the Mask

Every one of us has a place where time falls away. Where the thinking mind quiets and the doing takes over. It might be painting, writing, problem-solving, teaching, leading, designing, building. It is not about perfection. It’s about presence.

That place (the zone where you lose yourself) is who you really are. It’s the truest expression of your creativity, intelligence, and energy. It’s where masks become irrelevant and walls unnecessary.

Why We Hide It

Why do we keep this part of ourselves hidden? Fear of judgment. Fear of failure. Fear of being “too much” or “not enough.” Fear that if the world sees us raw and real, we’ll lose love or respect.

Yet, the masks don’t actually protect us. They only distance us from the very opportunities, relationships, and experiences that could transform us.

Letting the Mask Fall

Imagine what would happen if you let the mask slip. If you let your self-judgement go and your amour fall away. If you trusted that your authentic self, not the curated, perfected, socially acceptable version, was the most powerful thing you could ever offer. That is where your genius lives. That is where connection deepens. That is where life stops being performance and starts being art.

An Invitation

Take a moment to ask yourself: When do I feel most alive? When do I lose track of time? What activity makes me forget to perform and remember who I am?

Go there. Often. With reverence. And little by little, allow that truth to spill over into the rest of your life.

The world doesn’t need another mask. It needs you: the you who creates, leads, and lives from the inside out.

If you’re a business owner with your mask still in tact, ask yourself this: am I really, truly offering what I can to the world? Or just a portion of my genius for fear of rejection or shame?

Do you have a story about stepping into your true self without apology?

The post Taking Off the Mask: Returning to the True You first appeared on Journalist • Storyteller • Creative Director.

Storytelling. It’s your key to corporate trust. If your brand lost every ad, every tagline, and every polished piece of copy overnight… would people still believe in you?

That’s the litmus test for trust.

Because here’s the thing: in 2025, trust isn’t a “nice to have”. It’s currency. It’s the deciding factor in whether people will buy from you, work for you, recommend you, or walk away entirely. And the single most powerful way to build it isn’t through perfect campaigns or corporate jargon.

It’s through story.

Why Storytelling Builds Trust Faster Than Any Marketing Campaign

Humans are wired for story. Long before we built cities, we built campfires. Around those fires, we didn’t swap spreadsheets or strategic plans, we told stories. They shaped how we saw the world, who we trusted, and how we decided what mattered.

Neuroscience backs this up. Stories activate the brain’s mirror neurons, which make us feel another person’s experience as if it were our own. That emotional connection is what creates memory and trust and it’s why a single well-told story can do more than a million-dollar ad budget.

Where Corporate Storytelling Goes Wrong

Too many companies mistake storytelling for spin. They produce case studies that read like PR gloss, leadership bios that hide more than they reveal, and brand videos so overproduced they feel like they were created in a lab.

The result? People feel marketed at, not spoken with.

When a story is told to control perception rather than connect with people, it loses its power—and audiences. Whether they’re customers, employees, or stakeholders, they can sense it instantly.

“The companies that lead won’t be the ones with the most polished messages. They’ll be the ones whose stories feel less like a pitch and more like an open door.”

The 3 Elements of Trust-Building Stories

If you want your corporate storytelling to create genuine trust, you need three things:

1. Truth
Facts, not fiction. Avoid exaggeration. In an age of instant fact-checking, every detail matters.

2. Vulnerability
This doesn’t mean oversharing. It means being willing to acknowledge challenges, mistakes, and lessons learned. Paradoxically, showing where you’ve stumbled makes people trust your wins.

3. Consistency
The story your executives tell on stage should match what employees experience in the lunchroom. Inconsistent narratives breed skepticism faster than silence.

The Brands That Get It Right

Patagonia doesn’t just say it cares about the planet, it tells stories about its environmental activism, employee-led initiatives, and even the times it’s taken a hit financially to stand by its values.

LEGO shares behind-the-scenes stories of designers and fans, turning its audience into co-creators rather than passive consumers.

How Leaders Can Start Today

If you’re not sure where to begin, start small:

Find the goosebump moments. What stories in your company’s history still give you chills?

Share the hard-won lessons. When did you face a challenge that changed the way you work?

Spotlight your people. What’s a customer or employee story you’ve never told publicly?

The key is to tell these stories before you need them. Crisis is not the time to start building trust, it’s the time to draw on the trust you’ve already earned.

The Bottom Line

Trust is fragile. It can take years to build and seconds to lose. But when you choose stories rooted in truth, vulnerability, and consistency, you give your audience something to hold onto, something they can believe in when the noise gets loud.

Because in the end, the companies that lead won’t be the ones with the most polished messages. They’ll be the ones whose stories feel less like a pitch and more like an open door.

If this resonated, please consider sharing to help a brand or business you love.

Hi, I’m Shannon and I’m a reformed people pleaser.

I used to think kindness was my superpower… If I could just be good enough, agreeable enough, accommodating enough, I’d earn my place in the hearts of others. I subconsciously believed that giving more of myself meant I’d receive more kindness (and avoid pain) in return. I consciously thought I was offering the world what it was starving for: kindness.

But here’s the unvarnished truth: That kind of “kindness” almost destroyed me.

It wasn’t kindness at all. It was self-abandonment dressed up as virtue. It was the exhausting art of bending, folding, and compressing myself into the smallest, least offensive version of me, just to be liked… or at least, not to be rejected.

And it worked. Sort of.

I got the smiles. I got the “you’re so lovely” comments. I got the invitations.
But I also got resentment—both theirs and mine. I got overlooked. I got taken for granted. I got the slow, soul-level erosion of my own worth.

Here’s what I didn’t know back then:

The more you try to protect yourself from pain by avoiding conflict, the more pain you invite in. Not all at once—that would be obvious—but slowly, drip-by-drip, until your spirit is waterlogged and heavy.

I subconsciously believed saying “yes” would help me avoid pain and hurt. I thought keeping quiet when something hurt would keep the peace. I thought being endlessly forgiving would make me safe.

But love without boundaries isn’t love. It’s control. Peace without truth isn’t peace. It’s suppression. And forgiveness without self-respect isn’t noble. It’s erasure.

I had to learn the hardest way: real kindness is fierce.

It’s the kind that says:

“I love you, but I won’t betray myself to keep you comfortable.”

“I care about your feelings, but not at the cost of my own.”

“I want peace, but only if it’s real peace, not the fake kind we make by pretending we’re fine.”

Photo: @chriscurry92

Boundaries are not walls that keep people out. They’re doors that only open for the right kind of love.

And when I finally locked the door on my old ways, I discovered something I never expected: The people who truly cared about me didn’t leave when I started saying “no”. The people who were only here for what I could give them? They left on their own.

I won’t lie, there’s grief in this process. You’ll lose things you thought you couldn’t live without. But what you gain is worth it: Self-respect. Restored energy. Relationships that feel mutual instead of one-sided. And the deep, grounding joy of knowing you are safe with yourself.

If you’ve been taught that kindness means self-sacrifice, I want you to know this:

You’re allowed to love people without being their cushion, their constant “yes,” or their emotional clean-up crew. You’re allowed to walk away from anyone who asks you to shrink to fit their comfort zone. You’re allowed to protect your own heart first.

Because kindness without boundaries isn’t kindness. It’s slow self-destruction.

And the bravest, kindest thing you can do for the world is to stop abandoning yourself.

If this landed for you, send it to someone you love.
It might just be the thing that saves them from drowning in “niceness.”

It will tell you presence is only proven by output. That your worth is measured by how much you can show, share, and ship, and how quickly you can do it again.

Yet creation that matters has its own seasons and moves to a rhythm that can’t be rushed.

Photo: @girl_behindthelens

Most of us have created from urgency… to meet the wants of a world that over-consumes and is too ready to judge a book by its cover. We feel the push to create simply to feed the beast and pacify that quiet, often subconscious, need for approval. It’s a wheel we’ve become accustomed to riding, rarely stopping long enough to remember we can get off.

Authenticity can’t be faked. You can mimic its shape, but you can’t counterfeit its pulse. And when you create from anywhere but that, something in you knows.

Remember the words that looked good but didn’t ring true? The projects born from a deadline instead of a heartbeat? Smiles in the comments while you sat, strangely hollow, knowing you’d abandoned something sacred in the process?

Authenticity can’t be faked. You can mimic its shape, but you can’t counterfeit its pulse. And when you create from anywhere but that, something in you knows.

Creating from authenticity is slower. It asks you to listen longer, speak later. It asks you to touch the raw, unpolished edge of what you really want to say and then have the courage to offer it, even if it isn’t perfect, even if it isn’t popular.

When you create from that place, the work doesn’t need to chase people. It carries its own gravity. It finds the ones who were already looking for it, even if they didn’t have the words.

If you’ve been caught in the swirl of producing, performing, proving… Pause. Let the noise fall away until you can hear your own voice again. Not the one you’ve trained for public consumption… the one that feels like home.

And when you create from there, you won’t need the world’s applause to know it’s good. You’ll feel it. And that will be enough.

Photo: Estee Janssens

Rather than Resist, What if we Embraced Our Entire Evolution?

When we resist change, we create friction within ourselves and within the world around us. But when we embrace the full arc of our evolution, we begin to see technology not as a threat, but as a mirror of our own capacity to grow, adapt, and connect in new ways. Evolution has always asked us to stretch beyond the familiar. SoulTech is born from this truth: that our tools, when used for good, can become allies in expanding what it means to be human.

We are living in a time where technology is moving faster than ever. Some see it as a threat, something to resist. But what if, instead of resisting, we learned to work with it, consciously, intentionally, and in service to our deeper human needs?

For years, I’ve witnessed how the outer world of tech can easily overshadow the inner world of human connection. The result is often overwhelm, burnout, or a sense of disconnection. Yet, I believe technology is not the problem. It is how we choose to engage with it.

This is where SoulTech comes in.

A Way of Working with Technology

SoulTech is not a product, not a device, not a quick fix. It is a way of working with technology that honours its power and our humanity. It asks us not to outsource our essence to machines, but to integrate technology in ways that enhance connection, creativity, and collective well-being.

When we resist technology, we risk falling behind in ways that matter most. But when we embrace it with discernment, with vision, and with care, we open new pathways for growth, healing, and meaningful leadership.

The question is no longer “Should we use technology?” The question is “How do we use it with soul?”

That is the invitation of SoulTech and it is only the beginning.

For centuries, every great leap in human history has come with a wave of uncertainty. The printing press, the telephone, the internet, each was first met with fear, and yet each ultimately expanded the way we connect and create. Today, we stand at a similar threshold with artificial intelligence and emerging technologies. The choice before us is not whether these forces will shape our future, but whether we will shape them with awareness, discernment, and care.

To me, the heart of this moment is not about machines, but about meaning. Technology is neutral until we give it direction. When we lead with fear, it fragments us. When we lead with intention, it can amplify the best of us: our creativity, our empathy, our capacity for community.

What Path Will You Take?

This isn’t about handing over our essence to algorithms. It’s about holding our essence so strongly that technology bends to serve it. Imagine apps, platforms, and tools not as distractions but as mirrors, reminding us of who we are and guiding us back to what matters most. Imagine leadership that uses technology not to speed up for the sake of efficiency alone, but to deepen connection and make space for wisdom.

The future will not be built by resisting what is inevitable. It will be shaped by those who dare to meet technology with soul. SoulTech lives in that space: the sacred bridge between innovation and intuition, between what we can build and who we choose to become.
