Messages, by Jennifer Teo & Shannon O’Neill.

Five channel generative sound installation

Part of an ongoing series of artworks exploring site, memory and relationships, beginning with Waterfront Utopia (Newington Armory, 2010).

Exhibition

Hidden 2011, 7 March – 8 May.
All Souls Chapel, Rookwood Cemetery, Sydney.

Background

Throughout the twentieth century, paranormal investigators sought to capture the ‘voices of the dead’ using the technologies of the time, such as radios and tape recorders. These ‘electronic voice phenomena’ are now widely thought to have been random, innocuous signals.

However the urge to reconnect with loved ones who have passed seems inherently human. The proliferation of new technologies for capturing and distributing memories suggests that such a connection is increasingly possible.

About the work

Messages explores this uncanny phenomenon through a site-specific sound installation that plays recordings of deceased loved ones, from sources such as answering machines and home movies. Members of the community are invited to contribute their own recordings, facilitated by social media and the web.

The chapel is a place of remembrance in which memories will spontaneously emerge, through spatially diffused audio recordings.

Recordings of the artists’ own deceased parents are included in artwork. Jennifer Teo has a personal connection to the site as her mother was cremated at Rookwood in 2004.

Call for contributions

You are invited to contribute your own recordings of deceased loved ones, to be included in a future version of the work.

All Aboard! ROLLING STOCK is a series of site specific performances, installations and collaborations between artists, visiting audiences and the local Junee community on a train moving through the rural landscape from Midday to Midnight on Saturday 20th November 2010.

Ranging from the odd, the spectacular and the sublime, ROLLING STOCK embraces art, community and landscape in its broadest form(s). Beginning with a series of creative residencies with over 15 artists generating content with and relevant to the Junee community and other worldly concerns, ROLLING STOCK will culminate with a 1 day public event commencing at Junee Railway station at high noon on Saturday 20th of November. From here the ROLLING STOCK train will meander its way around the countryside with audio visual installations and participatory live art performances manifesting throughout the afternoon. Concluding ROLLING STOCK will be a Rockabilly band playing live at the Junee Licorice & Chocolate Factory until midnight.

Highlights of ROLLING STOCK include:

For ROLLING STOCK Watson will be premiering recordings from his forthcoming album ‘El Tren Fantasma’ – The Ghost Train?. Utilising sounds from recording work for the documentary series ?Great Train Journeys? with Rick Stein in Mexico, ?El Tren Fantasma? will be recontextualised for ROLLING STOCK train via live surround sound mixes as the train ventures through significant landmarks.

The Perth based PVI COLLECTIVE will be resolving on-board conflict resolution relevant to local and global issues through the ancient art of tug-o-war.

The real life RENNY KODGERS will be on hand to entertain with his immense presence via variety quizzes, dulcet tones and sheer celebrity power.
