Part of an ongoing series of artworks exploring site, memory and relationships, beginning with Waterfront Utopia (Newington Armory, 2010) and continuing with Waterfront Utopia II (SNO, 2012)

Waterfront Utopia II invited listeners to consider the relationships between industry, technology, health and environment. It presented an immersive and ever-changing sonic environment of electronic and electroacoustic elements, while headphones contained stories of growing up around the Rhodes Peninsula in Sydney as told by members of the Christensen family, local residents since the 1950′s.

The stories explore childhood memories, and environmental changes from the past to the present day, including the impacts of industry on the waterways, and the effects on residents’ quality of life.

Created for SNO 100, Waterfront Utopia III takes a number of sonic elements from the previous iteration and remixes them into a new composition.

Featuring Camilla Lynch, Emma Jane Lynch, Danny Christensen, Peter Christensen (1951-2011).

SNO 100 features work by over 300 artists from all over the place who have been involved in the last 99 SNO exhibitions. To be opened by eminent artist and writer, Emeritus Profesor Richard Dunn and featuring a sound performance by Kraig Grady and Terumi Narushima.

Waterfront Utopia II presents an immersive and ever-changing sonic environment of electronic and electroacoustic elements, while headphones contain a family’s stories of growing up and of their ongoing relationship to their environment.

A follow-up to Waterfront Utopia (2010) in which a newly edited selection of stories is presented on headphones, and contextualised in an immersive sonic environment. Part of an ongoing series of artworks exploring site, memory and relationships.

Podcast art work by Carla Wherby, Michael Jackson, 2010. Carla Wherby often employs biro and texta on paper to create detailed montages with imagery borrowed from media and popular culture. She has been awarded a scholarship to attend the National Art School and visit the War Memorial in Canberra to study war objects, memorabilia and ephemera.

Carla’s current work is being exhibited as part of Framing Gravity, a national exhibition of excellence by artists who experience disability, presented by Accessible Arts.  21 October – 5 November 2011 at SCA Gallery, Sydney.

Throughout the twentieth century, paranormal investigators sought to capture the ‘voices of the dead’ using the technologies of the time, such as radios and tape recorders. These ‘electronic voice phenomena’ are now widely thought to have been random, innocuous signals.

However the urge to reconnect with loved ones who have passed seems inherently human. The proliferation of new technologies for capturing and distributing memories suggests that such a connection is increasingly possible.

Messages explores this uncanny phenomenon through a site-specific sound installation that plays recordings of deceased loved ones, from sources such as answering machines and home movies. Members of the community are invited to contribute their own recordings, facilitated by social media and the web.

The chapel is a place of remembrance in which memories will spontaneously emerge, through spatially diffused audio recordings.

Recordings of the artists’ own deceased parents are included in artwork. Jennifer Teo has a personal connection to the site as her mother was cremated at Rookwood in 2004.

Memory Flows

As elsewhere around the globe, Australian rivers are conduits that are emblematic of networking systems, travel systems and survival systems. Memories and stories – both actual and fictional – will flow and stream from Australians’ intense and varied relationships with water. Artists belonging to this group have tapped into the specific memory that rivers and waterways retain, streaming their enquiry back to the group and out to a larger public audience via exhibition.

Radio Metamix was broadcast on ABC Radio National‘s The Night Air on July 1, 2007, as part of the Liquid Architecture festival. Recording became available for download from Alias Frequencies in 2010. Also broadcast on FBi Radio‘s Ears Have Ears on February 26, 2012.

Julian Knowles facilitated a panel of leading voices from Australian sound culture to discuss important issues around the sustainability of contemporary sound arts practice in Australia. Performance by The Field

Artists Chris Caines, Shannon O’Neill and Jessica Tyrrell improvise together on themes of memory and water, responding to each other and to audiovisual material from sources including the ABC’s Pool website. This performance will also be streamed live online.

A night of breakcore, cabaret, dub and more, with some of Australia’s finest underground talent. Artists included Evolution Control Committee (USA), Buttress O’Kneel, Puzahki, Atone, Loom, DJ Lieutenant Colonel Spastic Howitzer, DJ Corporal Leper.

Thoughts Flash comprises two hallucinatory tracks from Wake Up and Listen’s unreleased debut album. Recorded in the late 1990s, the album featured a number of studio recordings, as well as edited excerpts from WUAL’s long-running radio show on 2MBS-FM. The technique of condensing extended radio improvisations into relatively short pieces, as on these two tracks, suggested a fruitful direction for the duo, however Bertram and O’Neill spent the following years focusing on other projects, with WUAL continuing primarily as a live act (their 2001 mini-album Mustard Keanu notwithstanding).
