The Farmer’s Almanac used to define a blue moon as the third full moon in a season (every three months)  that has four full moons instead of three. More recently, due to misinterpretation, a blue moon came to mean a second full moon in a month. This kind of blue moon will happen on New Year’s Eve this year, December 31, 2009.  However, in Australia and most of Asia, it will occur not in December but in January 2010 due to date differences between time zones.

The origins of the name blue moon are unclear. The expression “once in a blue moon”, dating from the 19th century, means something that happens very rarely. Another explanation connects it with the word belewe from the Old English, meaning, “to betray”, since it skewed the calculations for the date of Easter in church calendars, based on moon cycles. I have certified circus arts performer(s) and instructor(s) who will run a program for the home learners in the gym at Garibaldi on Tuesday afternoons from 12:45 to 2:30.  (We would also still have Centres and library time and math games in the afternoon).

Depending on the number of students interested, we would have either one or two instructors.  There will be a cost to the program, but only to cover the instructor(s) fees, which I will be able to provide to you once I have a firm number of commited participants.  This cost would be around  $5 to $10 per session.

If you would like your child to participate in this program, please email me as soon as possible so that I can plan this program and get everything arranged with the instructor(s).  The program would start January the 5th, if I hear from enough people right away. Otherwise,  it would start a week or two later.  Please just send in your intention to participate right now.  I will be able to answer questions and provide you with detailed information once I have finished writing everyone’s report cards, Dec. 14th or so.

Bowling

Starting January 7th and running until March 4th, I will be leading a bowling program which will happen at Grandview lanes.   This first day will be an introduction and selecting groups in the class, from the second day through March 4th,  we will leave from the school via transit, bowl, then return to the school via transit.    Bowling time will be every Thursday from 10:30 to noon.  There will be a minimal cost of $3 per session plus cost of transit. (If we have parents who can car pool, this would be a great option!)

While I take the students bowling, Juliana will be running programming at the school.  Details to follow.

Again, if your child is interested, please advise me at your earlist convenience, as I am arranging everything with the facility.

Shannon

To this end, Ms. Uzelac (K/1) and I are starting Choir on Thursday, November 26th and we will hold a 1/2 hour choir session every Tuesday and Thursday morning through December 17th.   Students are welcome to join the choir even if they cannot make the December 2oth performance.  The children will also perform two or three of the songs for the Garibaldi Winter concert on December 15th.

A  holiday event notice  from Mary-Ann:HolidayEventInvite

Our field trip to the Maritime Museum for Amazing Arctic Animals is next week; Thursday November 26th from 12:00 – 2:45.  If you are able to provide carpooling, please let me know how many you can provide a ride for and I will do my best to ensure everyone has a ride there and back.   We always need drivers! 

If you haven’t signed the field trip form, please do so and bring it in.  I will post the field trip form on the blog presently.

Donations of used 100% woolen products (sweaters, scarves, etc.) will be greatly appreciated for this project.  If you don’t have any around the house, they can be purchased at thrift shops (I will be sleuthing these out at the Sally Ann this week.)   The condition of the items doesn’t matter. 

Please wash the items in hot water and dry in a hot dryer before bringing them to the classroom.
