Mt. Shasta from Lake Siskiyou

Greetings from Mt. Shasta,

The early bird really did get the worm this morning. Like a classic spring photograph,  I saw a robin pull a worm out of the moist and fertile grasses, a sight that really tickled me for some reason. The “call of the wild” feels very literal in Mt. Shasta. On many mornings, I notice an early morning impulse to go outside. I always follow that impulse because it has led me on many beautiful adventures. No matter what I find on that morning excursion, I always come back feeling recharged, and struck with wonder and awe at the power of Nature.

Mt. Shasta “called” early this morning, so I went to commune with my mountain mother on Mother’s Day. I have been doing a form of Chi Gung called the Eight Essentials. I go outside and stand where the view of Mt. Shasta is taking up my entire perspective.  To say it has been a powerful way to get my energy flowing is an understatement. In fact that exercise has changed my consciousness when I most needed it and added a sense of well being to my mind body and emotions. Communion with the mountain always opens my heart and there is a delightful gratitude for being here in this expansive beauty. One of the exercises I do is called the Heart Sutra. Each movement feels like I am offering love to Mt. Shasta and bringing power back into my heart at the same time. This morning when I completed the requisite 8 rounds, there was a Cloud Heart in the sky above the mountain. While I watched, it soon morphed into a giant angel with great wings spreading above me  – a true blessing for the day. They have inspired me so much that I have decided to include these powerful exercises in my retreat this October.

On May 1 I had the fun of sharing Mountain Communion with a visiting friend. The scenery after some recent rain seemed extraordinarily bright and sparkling, with the sky a dark clear blue and the mountain standing like the brilliant sentinel she is. We enjoyed a very quiet and peaceful day taking many different opportunities to soak in the mountain energy. It felt so nourishing, vibrant and peacefully grounded. I found out later that May 1 was St. Germain Ascension Day. Since St Germain is associated with Mt. Shasta in so many ways, it is possible that contributed to the special energy we were experiencing. I have noticed that using the Violet Flame decrees here is very powerful. When there is a connection, our sacred mountain has a way of sinking deeply into the solar plexus and igniting the spirit. It seems impossible to leave the scene of this glorious mountain vista and still run on empty.

I had the gift of house and dog sitting recently for friends who live in a beautiful natural setting. Spring is bursting in dogwoods, lilacs and blossoming fruit trees. It has been a gift to be in solitude in a place where Nature has always been honored and respected. The Nature Spirits are alive and well here, and I can feel their presence here at the foot of Mt. Shasta. There is a creek that enlivens the air, lush green grasses, spacious forest land, gardens and rhododendrons just about to burst into bloom. The peaceful setting and the quiet here has blessed me in beautiful ways.

Walking by Lake Siskiyou with a canine companion is a wonderful way to explore out of the way places with creeks and pathways that meander through the forest leading to ponds, lakes and meadows. The trails by the lake offer quiet paths and there are beaches that expand the views of trees as well as the sparkling sunlight on the waters. I saw two eagles the other morning by the lake, each sitting in their own dead tree. The eagle pair seemed to love the open and lofty perches that those trees provide. They were calling to each other in an amazingly chirpy voice that I never heard from an eagle before, like a running conversation.

The solar eclipse on May 9 seemed to push me into the inability to do anything except stay in the present moment. A fogginess has been on my brain not allowing me to look ahead or be creative. I have even had difficulty focusing on desires or possibilities. I have had to pull out my intentions for the year so I would be able to remember what it is I really want in my life. I am glad I wrote my intentions at a time when things seemed more clear and I can refer to them now for inspiration. One thing this fog has done is encourage my prayers. I feel as though I am in perpetual prayer right now because aside from Nature, that is what inspires me the most. Here’s one from today:
Divine Presence,
Please bring me Clarity for my path at this time. I ask for your Guidance to be direct and obvious. Let the visions of my heart carry the Wisdom of my soul.
I give thanks that the way is now open for me to bring all my gifts and all that I have learned into my life in ways that fulfill my soul’s purpose. And so it is.

Greetings from the Sacred Mountain,

Today the sun is out and there are snow flurries. Nature is demonstrating the intensity of the energy I am experiencing — like the myriad possibilities of life swirling around me right now, and it is very bright!

Since the Equinox there have been so many openings for everyone I know. Some people are getting confused because they have too many choices, but that seems like a small problem comparatively. The first part of the year felt like struggle just to put one foot in front of the other, that warm jello stuff we were slogging through. But now there is an opening to Creative Potential and Infinite Possibilities. For many, miracles are becoming the way of life. For me, Life seems to be getting way more fun. The energy feels more familiar than I am used to. I feel like I am coming into the time that I was meant to live in. For most of my life it felt as though I was out of step with the rest of the world, but now I am feeling more at home in these new frequencies.

We are getting closer to the beginning of the Eclipse cycle starting on April 25. This has amazing potential for Radical Transformation. More information about this on TheGabrielMessages.com. Some astrologers are calling it a “Wormhole,” meaning we could be catapulted across light years into a new form of evolution at the end of the eclipse cycle on June 21. To me this is such a wondrous opportunity that I am praying to stay centered and find ways to move through this time with calm, peaceful agility. In fact, it seems that if I can allow myself to be very flexible while I am creating new foundations for my life, I will be more capable of dancing with these new flows of energy.

One of the ways I am doing that is by taking a wonderful Tai Chi/Chi Gung class. The people in this class are very dedicated and also very experienced in life (in other words: seniors). During the class, there are prolonged periods of silence where only the sound of people breathing together is heard. It is magical and a very powerful experience. These ancient forms of exercise stimulate the flow of Life Force Energy through the body. Acupuncturists say “Energy follows Thought and Blood follows Energy,” so these exercises were developed more than one thousand years ago for health, longevity and well-being. They seem really useful right now for me and help tune me into the subtle energies at work.

Has anyone else noticed how verbal and conversant the trees are becoming? It seems as though the ancient wisdom of the Earth is being broadcast through them. There is a magnificent Blue Spruce in front of my living room window.  Yesterday I heard this tree  saying:

When I stand tall, my roots spread wider and I can withstand the winds of change.

I am aligned through the center of my being from Heaven to Earth.

I allow myself to be very flexible so I dance in the energy flows of life.

Seems like very good advice. I have been noticing how important it is for me to stay grounded, and that has been a full-time occupation at times. Staying grounded has proven to assist me in facing the challenges of the intense energy much more gracefully so I am committed to the process. I like being on Earth right now and want to trust the energy in a whole new way.

At times I feel like I am coming out of the womb, birthing a whole new life. Very springtime I guess. This new time is a Path of Discovery for me, like being newly born. I have a new, more curious way of viewing the world and find myself in Wonder and Awe much of the time. I am discovering how magical the world can be and it is very exciting. My inner spirit is totally engaged in the process. I am having these running conversations with my Higher Self, offering gratitude, asking questions, inviting angels and even sending blessings. Sometimes I feel compelled to tell people something that feels really important, but after it is out of my mouth there is sort of an “uh-oh WTF was that!” inner response from my conscious mind. I think I realize how very close this brings me to the “perhaps demented, senile old lady” thing. And yet I am trusting the process and watching with some amusement. Historically it may be called my “Crazy Crone Time.”

There does seem to be more intuition to follow now. On the Equinox I felt the strong impulse to go to my favorite local store, Soul Connections. This store has a broad offering of crystals, stones, beautiful cards, books, Buddhas, Quan Yin, incense and lots more, including crystal bowls. In fact there is one in the window that is at least 3 feet wide and deep, the largest crystal bowl I have ever seen. I went in and asked the owner if she would play it for me in honor of the Equinox. This delightful woman obliged my request while I sat on the floor to listen. An amazing deeply resonant tone came from this bowl and transported me. I almost wanted to cry because the energy was so intense and yet I did not want to waste it in emotionality. Then I remembered to breathe and grounded the energy through me and I felt myself deepen into this richly-connected place with the Sacred Earth. I have been immensely grateful for this experience, for following my intuition, and to have that level of resource available in this wonderful small town of Mt. Shasta where I live.

Yes, everything you need is right here within your heart, within your soul and within this embodiment! Greetings from Mt. Shasta,

This is the beginning of a series of blog posts to catalog what I am calling the Season of Awakening. We just passed through an amazing Equinox-Full Moon download of the Sacred Balance of the Feminine and Masculine energies and now we are moving into an 8 week series of Eclipses that are being called the Wormhole. As you old Star Trekors know, a Wormhole will whisk you into a new dimension in a miraculous moment. Since 2013 started I have been feeling as though we have been walking through warm jello, noticing how difficult it is to try to get anything started. Part of the situation is that we are literally creating the new world as we live it and set the foundations. In the early morning hours after midnight of  January 1, 2013, I was told by Archangel Gabriel, “Welcome to 2013. A year so malleable you will be creating it as you live. It will be Equinox before there can be any movement forward.”

Well now we have been through the Equinox and it seems like before we can move, we are really needing to work some more on that foundation, in fact the Core of my Being seems to need an overhaul! I was teaching my last Living in Radiance teleclass on the Equinox. Just before I sat down to open the class, I received a message that I would be rewiring a new Core of Being for everyone in our meditation. Great, I thought, thanks for the advance notice. But that is the way it has been for these classes throughout 2012 and so far this year also. A walk in Radical Trust. (It seems to have worked though because we have been having some great and powerful meditations to close the evening classes.) I was led to understand that we were never wired for the level of change we are experiencing in life right now, and our nervous systems are having quite a time of it – in case you had not noticed! This meditation has the intention of rewiring our core energy system so that we can more easily function in the higher energy frequencies and learn to ground the excess energy that is making us feel crazy. Heart Centered Action

We are also learning to live from Heart Centered Activity now because we can no longer use logic as a way forward. Nothing in the 5th Dimension is linear, exact or specific, and we truly made it into the 5th Dimension on the Solstice December 21, 2012. We are moving toward Divine Light, literally creating our world as we live it. I have to accept on a deep level that I am living in the Great Mystery of the Unknown, with radical change moving through and around me, while I learn to trust that I will respond in appropriate ways in the moment. Our hearts are being impulsed with the Divine Presence and literally carry a higher intelligence quotient than our brains now. The studies from HeartMath.org are fascinating and I highly recommend the shift in consciousness their work is providing.

I am letting my Higher Self teach me to feel more safe while I experience the Unknown through these changes. At this point my Higher Self is my best friend and holds the connection to my Soul Purpose. The only thing I can do right now is to keep my intentions clear and my spiritual practice strong, with the intention to live as a spiritual being in this time of radical shifts.

 It is really all I can when nothing works the way it used to. I am trusting that my intentions will guide my way, and my Higher Self will let me know what it is I need to do moment to moment. There does not seem to be much ability to look ahead. The masters of the Ages have tried to teach us to live in the Present, and now we seem to have no choice.

As we live what we know and have learned over the years, we will continue to anchor Divine Light Frequencies on the planet to help the change. We are actually spiritualizing the world with our own process of living as spiritual beings in daily life. By the time of the Solstice on June 21, we can be living examples of what is possible when we bring Spirit into Matter. This is not something to fear. We will all be able to do this, because we are coming together as a community wholeheartedly dedicated to spiritual awakening for ourselves and the collective ascension beyond the self. There are millions of people dedicated to creating Dynamic Engaged Spirituality that infuses daily activities with depth of spirit so that every moment can be a point of spiritual awakening.

The only obstacle is for you not to believe in the Change that is occurring, or believe that we or our world cannot change for this is not the truth. When it gets overwhelming, pray for help, ground all that excess energy, and try these mantras: Change is necessary. Change is safe. Change brings benevolent outcomes. Change is good. Remember this is an Evolutionary Shift. We have to change for survival on this planet. Not from a fear standpoint, but from the recognition that this is the next step on an evolutionary level, to bring about fully empowered consciousness on a planetary level that can support a world of Peace and Harmony.

Remember to Breathe

Spiritual Presence is the only Constant in this powerful time of evolution. We are not alone. Our spiritual assistance is only a thought away. Let your breath be the key to take you back into spiritually-centered awareness. God lives in the space between our breaths. Here is where we will find the Peace we need to live in this magical time of Radical Spiritual Transformation. Join in this experiment of transformation with a curious, innocent and trusting nature. Don’t forget to call on the gift of your Higher Self, your best friend and sacred companion. For all of us, the Higher Self is the one who bears witness to who we are and holds the essence of our Divine Blueprint of Perfection.

And be kind to yourself. Every time we give ourselves compassion we are grounding the power of that frequency on the planet. Through loving kindness to ourselves, we bless not only our soul families but the entire world. We then open channels for the frequencies of Divine Love and World Peace to be anchored. Without you this would not be possible.

I will add more of the lessons I am learning about living a spiritual life while active in the world as we go along. I will talk more about the Breath as well as our Higher Selves in particular. Hello from Mt. Shasta,

We have all taken a turn in the tides since 12/21/12, the Winter Solstice that impacted the world so greatly. It has been fascinating to watch the changes as the world unfolds for 2013. 

The most obvious change was my move to Mt. Shasta of course, which has been highlighted by what I am calling my “Knock your Sox off Moments of Exalted Beauty.” Clearly my senses have been heightened by the shift in consciousness we have all made since 12/21, and I am grateful to have moved to the smaller town of Mt. Shasta which has a very high vibration. This has allowed my molecules to rearrange themselves in the new 2013 frequencies.

Two days after I moved in there was a winter storm bringing 4 feet of snow, followed by weeks of sunny dry weather. Mt. Shasta came out from behind the clouds in all her glory, impressed upon the deep blue sky in miraculous relief, crowned in peaks of white, white snow that sparkled and glowed in the clear sunlight. I found I could walk into town to get a video or visit the local market when driving was too icy. My treks out onto the snow-covered fields have felt exalted, and happiness has been bubbling from my heart from the experience of this immense beauty.

At the same time there has been an obvious deepening in my awareness of the sacred grounds I walk upon, and the sanctity of the waters that pour in great abundance from the Earth around Mt. Shasta. One day while visiting the headwaters of the Sacramento River to fill my daily drinking water bottles, my consciousness was transformed by the presence of 4 Native men. One man had a drum and was chanting to the waters and the earth, then offering tobacco before loading his jugs with pure water. This impressed me so much that I have made my prayers before I fill my water bottles more exuberant and made sure I consciously offer my gratitude to the Earth Mother for the abundant flow of her pure waters. I also pray for all the waters of the earth to be purified at the same time. Observing the Native man’s prayers that day also affected me more acutely because on that day I was feeling tense from some work I was doing, and was having difficulty grounding the excess energy. While he chanted I sat in the snow and just received the energy of his prayers and gratitude to the Divine. The transformation I experienced in my consciousness that day has stayed with me for weeks, and allowed me to bring higher frequencies into my work just as I have intended. The Earth seems to be calling us to offer her our gratitude and blessings in this new time. I know that this makes a difference by lifting the vibrational frequencies within and around us.

Spiritualizing my Life

Since 12/21/12, it has become abundantly clear that I am learning how to spiritualize my daily life so there is no separation. This has been a goal of mine for many years, and though it has been mostly successful, clearly 2013 has brought the manifestation of this intention to a new level of opportunity. Intuition is more available so life has become more seamless in many ways, and the heartfelt connection I have experienced to myself and my work has been magical. I have wanted my work to be my spiritual practice, and my home to reflect the spiritual qualities that most inspire me. Now in my new Temple Home in Mt. Shasta, it is clearly unfolding in just that way as I am bringing my spiritual tools into my daily life. We are being gifted with Heart Centered Action this year, according to Archangel Gabriel, and each of us is learning what that means to us.

Because I moved into a new space I wanted to incorporate lifetime’s of spiritual tools into creation of a home/office that was also a Temple holding the power of the Spiritual Practice I have adopted over 40 years. It has become a reflection of Matrix Technology using Light Fields to anchor the spiritual principles I believe in. Consciously choosing each thing I kept in my space became a powerful discipline as the altars slowly took over the entire apartment. I anchored Love in each of the corners with rocks and large uncut stones. I anchored the entire building I live in with powerful intentions. (Since it is in the shape of an H, I anchored Health, Harmony, Humor and Happiness into each corner). Wanting to charge up my apartment with high vibrational energy, I have been playing Sanskrit chants from the day I moved in. I anchored the sacred geometric shape of an octahedron in the center of my living space, pulling in all the corners of the apartment so it is all one dedicated space. My home/temple/work space is not only dedicated to manifestation of Unity and Oneness in all things, it is also dedicated to Beauty. I used Light Fields of Beauty, so that everywhere I look is beautiful. This uplifts me in such an amazing way that it adds to my “happiness quotient.” (I have been inspired by the stories about the government of Butan measuring the happiness of the people in that country as a measure of its success. It seems like we should all have that as a measurement for our lives.)

All of these intentions for my new home in Mt. Shasta are not really new in my life, as I have made the effort to create this sort of life for many years. What is magical about the time since 12/12/12 is that it is unfolding with Grace and Ease, and my HIgher Self is bringing me intuitive ideas on what my next heart-centered action will be. I have been able to float in a relatively, a surprisingly peaceful, spacious state of being as I am doing what needs to be done next. I am loving the way this feels so much that it sets the boundaries very clearly for what I am available to experience in my life. There is a sense of the fullness of Divine Presence within and around me that I want to have as my natural state of being, all the time. When I am not in alignment with this integral state, it is very clear. And it is also clear what I need to do to shift the state. The answer is always to raise my vibrational frequency. How I do that varies tremendously, which comes back to using the spiritual tools I have received over the years.

The fact that I have been amassing so much information, techniques, practices, and experiences in my spiritual toolkit has made it clearly obvious that I have to use it every day in order to create a life that works for me on many levels. What if I were really awake and I did not have to wait until I felt more like I was “finished” before I just live in the way I know is best for me. My life encompasses all that I enjoy and integrates all the parts of me that will need work perhaps as long as I have a body. I want to feel grounded and earthy as well as intensely pure and exalted in consciousness. In 2013 it is time to have it all. The caveat is that our intentions must be very clear to live in the realms of Divine Presence while we have our feet on the ground and connect to the core vitality of the Earth that sustains us.

Another demonstration of 2013 is the ability to experience lower frequencies of 3D awareness without being affected emotionally, as in the past. I can notice the difference between my 5D reality and 3D and seem to be able to live in both. This allows me to maintain strength in my boundaries as well as my ability to maintain Observer Mode without sinking into whatever is transpiring. Because it has been so organic,I am imagining that it has something to do with the Light Field of Safety and Grace that I have intended to live in. While I know intellectually that God keeps me safe and the Angels watch over me, my body still carries some old fear no matter how much work I have done. Living in a field of Safety has been a tremendous advantage. Adding Grace to my Light Field makes everything easier for me as well.

Early in the wee hours of the morning of 2013, I was awakened with the words, Welcome to 2013, a year so malleable that you are literally creating it as you live. It will be Equinox before this year can morph more clearly into what it will reveal. At the same time this means that your thoughts, prayers and intentions have immense power. As the energy of 2013 solidifies from its previous state of “warm jello,” I am using the power of my intentions to create a life that allows me to thrive in 2013.  We are participating in the most important shift in consciousness in human history. Part of the evolutionary movement is our own conscious dedication to bringing forth all the gifts, talents, skills and tools we have into the world. Through this powerful presentation together we are communicating a new reality.

Heart-Centered Activism 

Activism is a personal choice. It is a passion for a cause expressed
through actions, funding, communication, as well as prayer, rituals, and art.

A rallying symbol. Not a political statement!

Here is an excerpt from my writing-activism,  Moving Toward the Millionth Circle: Energizing the Global Women’s Movement. It was inspired and provoked by reactions to the announcement of support for a global conference on women by the UN Secretary General and President of the 66th General Assembly (March 8, 2012). This little book is for heart-centered activists who are motivated to act by compassionate action, a sense of sisterhood, or fierce mother bear protectiveness which is a combination of love and outrage.

Heart-Centered Activism

It takes work to be an activist of any kind.

There are twists and turns,

setbacks, large and small victories.

always much to be done

and more to do.

If you are called to be an activist

“take heart” applies.

It will be a labyrinthine journey that will test you.

Sometimes it will seem that the path is going straight to the goal,

and then it turns sharply and you feel back to square one,

as in a board game.

Will you give up or will you keep on?

Circumstances change, people who you counted on

may not come through.

May join forces with others, abandon ship.

Or just run out of steam.

It helps all concerned to be in a circle of support

with shared meaning at the center.

Activism is really not a job for a do-it-yourself action hero.

even if it depends on one person doing her job

at a particular moment.

When activism is your assignment in the way that I define it,

meaningful, fun, motivated by love,

then it also is soul work.

Assignments 

The idea of recognizing an assignment when one comes along grows through personal encounters with people whose lives and “assignments” are congruent, authentic, and involved in service. There are many, many good causes to become involved with, but the assignment about which I write is one that has your name on it, written so only you know that this one is for you. It is something you volunteer to do. Taking on an assignment is an aspect of individuation—of becoming authentically oneself, of being on a path with heart or on a chosen life path. It is doing soul work. And as many may tell you who began with something small but significant, one step leads to another.

The idea that an “assignment” could be your soul work begins with a premise that we have a soul as most everyone throughout time has assumed; if so, there must be some point in being here. An immortal soul comes in through the body of a biological mother, into a world of family, society, culture, and time, that is either welcoming or not. I remember the series of insights that led me to think that we are “spiritual beings on a human path, rather than human beings who may or may not be on a spiritual path” as I wrote in Close to the Bone: Life-Threatening Illness as a Soul Journey. Our lives are short, time passes quickly, and we will have our share of suffering and joy. Time, place, skin color and gender will greatly affect the expectations, opportunities, and limitations placed on us.  And yet, if we have a soul, then what we do here in the time we have matters.

In this particular historical and cosmological time, the excesses of alpha male psychology and patriarchy has brought humanity and the planet to the brink, and some of the wiser men look to women to save the situation: “We men have made a proper mess of things, it’s up to women to save us,” from Desmond Tutu, former Anglican archbishop and Nobel Peace Laureate, or as the nineteenth-century philosopher Matthew Arnold foresaw, “If ever the women of the world came together solely for the benefit of mankind, it would be a force the world has never seen.”

I took on the assignment of advocacy for a UN Fifth World Conference on Women (5WCW) as a direct outgrowth of the idea behind the metaphoric millionth circle. My advocacy is not a goal in itself, but a giant step toward reaching the millionth circle—just as smaller conferences of women and gatherings with this intention also will be. Circles that form during a workshop, as well as ones I have been in for many years, continue to inspire me.  I can say from my own experience that “Each circle supports each woman in it to believe in herself and live authentically, to be who she could be with support from the circle and spiritual energy from her deepest sources, and to live into her assignment.”

Definition: Assignment. (1.) Meaningful

Meaningful is an inside definition—no one else’s opinion matters here. There is aconnection between who you are inside, what you have experienced, and how being involved in this is meaningful to you. Very often there is some personal reason for taking this one on, which may have led to starting an organization or being part of it. For me, realizing what women’s circles with a sacred center can do to support the life, the creativity, and the activism of its members, came from being in a prayer circle for decades (irreverently called “the Sisters of Perpetual Disorder”) and the “mother circle of the Millionth Circle” for just over a decade.

Each year, when I attend presentations and panels given by women activists from NGOs (non-governmental organizations) at the United Nations, I become aware of how many of them as young women were in need of the services that they provide, and are survivors who work to end abuses. Examples abound, such as the women who once were trafficked and now work to rescue trafficked women. Compassion in action called many activist women who were moved by the plight of young girls.

Definition: Assignment (2.) Fun

Fun—when you are with others who share your values, and with whom you can celebrate, laugh, mourn, or cry together at the ups and downs of the journey. When what you do matters and you feel and see that it makes a difference.  When it uses your creativity and you find the courage to do it. When you can be so involved and absorbed in it that you lose track of time. You may never have worked so hard in your life, and yet never spent the time with more satisfaction.

However, every heart activist or creative woman in for the long run also knows that the definition of “fun” doesn’t fit those times in which criticism rains down, when funds dry up, or worse, when people who you thought of as friends abandon, betray, or make fun of you. Or when you hear: “Who do you think you are?”  During times that are clearly “not fun,” if the assignment is true one, it remains meaningful to you. Plus, there is truth in the saying, “activism is a cure for despair.” Even in the worst of times, if you continue to be an activist and understand the principle of tipping point—that when it is reached, it required all the actions and consciousness-raising that preceded it—you keep on keeping on.

Definition: Assignment (3.) Motivated by Love

Motivated by love—love for what you protect, or serve, or help—it could be a principle, people, animals, and nature. Love for beauty, for peace and harmony. To want for others what you are grateful to have. For many women who are becoming activists, spirituality came first. Love for the sacred feminine, for Gaia—the Earth as Great Mother, for Mother’s Agenda: for all children to have what every mother wants for her own child.

Love is the only source of energy that is not zero-sum: if I give you anything else, you will have more and I’ll have less.  This is not so with love: the more love I give you, the more I have myself, the more you will have, and the more there will be in the world.

In the late 1960′s a professor from Harvard made news with his experiments with LSD, which led him to find answers to spiritual questions in India. Many people followed him there to meet his guru, Neem Karoli Baba, and a new era was born. He wrote many books and taught all over the world in the years that followed bringing ancient wisdom to a generation ready to find a new way to live. It is a miracle to me and a gift to all of us that Ram Dass is Still Here (the name of his book on aging) teaching about Truth and Love. Ram Dass is a true teacher of the Heart.

I consider Ram Dass to be my first guru because his first book, Be Here Now, awakened the codes within my DNA to the truth of my spirit. Reading this in 1973, I was able to come back to life at a time when the material world held no more answers. I dedicated my life to honoring God and focused on the path of my soul. In that book, Ram Dass also offered the ideas of reincarnation and karma that so resonated within me so that my life had meaning once again. I began to meditate and do hatha yoga, and opened to the studies of holistic health that I am still working with to this day. These very teachings transformed my life, and I am so grateful.

In 1978 I found myself living in an ashram with my guru, Dhyanyogi Madhusudandas, who offered the same unconditional love to all of us that Ram Dass talked about in Neem Karoli Baba. In order to have spending money while serving in the ashram, I would clean houses and listen to tapes of lectures that Ram Dass gave all over the world. They were so clear and inspiring, humorous and divine. Soon after, when I heard that he was coming to Santa Cruz where I was living to offer a lecture, I made sure I was there. Before each event, Ram Dass would stand at the door and hug every single person that came through to see him. It was mind boggling to consider hugging thousands of people, especially because our ashram had clear rules about “losing your spiritual energy through body contact,” i.e. hugging.  Yet here was someone obviously divinely connected, intelligent, bright and humorous, opening his heart to all of us without restriction. Again it transformed me, and I am grateful.

In the meantime I continued to read the powerful books, Journey of Awakening, Grist for the Mill, and others that Ram Dass wrote so prolifically, enjoying a deepening of the spiritual teachings. He was showing me how to live a spiritual life serving God in modern life. His contributions and service to world during that time were monumental, it strengthened me and still I am grateful.

Around late 1989, I was visiting family in San Diego from Hawaii where I lived. Looking through the newspaper I found a very small ad that announced a lecture that evening by Ram Dass. Though only one inch or two in space showing up in the newspaper on that one day, the entire event was standing room only. There were more than 5,000 people who showed up to hear him speak and be moved by the teachings that he presented. He made a comment that night about the power of the written word, especially with respect to newspapers in general. In these days of instant communication, it still seems like a miracle that so many people found out that Ram Dass was in town to speak through that tiny ad, but he had touched so many lives, we all wanted to be there with him.

Around 2004, I was delighted to be invited when Ram Dass was back out in a public forum again, this time with Krishna Das in Honolulu. Again he packed the venue with people whose lives he had touched. Although halting at that time, his speech held empowered energy which opened my heart and touched me deeply. And once again, at the end of the night, he sat in his wheel chair at the doorway and hugged whoever wanted to connect with him. Even though it was very late, I made sure I stayed in line to give Ram Dass a hug and thank him for the way he transformed my life with his love.

Ram Dass continues to share his life transparently, demonstrating and talking about the effects of aging. Though he is only about 10 years older than me, I have had very few people whose lives have inspired me so much. Ram Dass has mentored me in a beautiful way over the years. Recently he has become even more visible working with spiritual luminaries like Alan Cohen and Krishna Das to offer amazing events during this powerful time at the end of 2012. Recently I started receiving inspiring quotes from him on email that I did not ask for consciously. I want to share one of the offerings I received last week.  Ram Dass continues to inspire and elevate my consciousness, and as always, I am very grateful.

The soul has karma. Part of its karma means that it takes incarnation as one of the things it’s doing… You as an awareness are born into a body and into a scene with parents and a whole scene like that. But how you see all that, and what you see out of it all is determined by the karma… You come with a predetermined game that picks out of the universe what you need. Then what you need is what catches you—there is an aversion or an attraction to. What there is no aversion or attraction to, you don’t even notice; it doesn’t even exist. It has to be ‘ugh’ or ‘ah.’ The clinging of mind is the way karma manifests, as clinging of mind.When you do meditation and draw your awareness back from the clinging of the mind, then you begin to see your own karma unfolding. You are not lost in it; you are mindful of it, like a hundred people walk down the street, but you notice one of them. That is your karmic projection outward. Then you have to deal with that attraction or that aversion. If you respond to that attraction by ‘ah’ – more karma. If you approach the aversion by ‘ugh’ – more karma. When the act of ‘ah’ attraction or ‘ugh’ aversion becomes ‘ah so,’ then you have eaten the karma alive.
