GARDEN UPDATE

I have been missing all of you and chatting about our garden! Lots to share, as I am sure there is at your garden, too. A big shout-out to my buds at the Garden Club in Huntington Beach...hope your sale was a success!!

We purchased another greenhouse and have been enjoying it immensely. Right now we have corn, acorn squash, butternut squash, a hybrid zucchini called "8 Ball", cucumbers, zucchini, pattypan squash, peas, strawberries, pumpkin, 5 kinds of lettuce, and numerous herbs. In the front garden we have rhubarb, watermelon, beans, and of course the topsy turvy tomatoes...SEVENTY TWO of them. We are not buying a single tomato this summer!! Trying a few new varieties like black cherry tomato and lemon pearl.

The front greenhouse continues to be happy and full of healthy, growing plants. I followed in my parents footsteps (they were great gardeners) and of course my Aunt Ruth with her blue ribbon award winning amaryllis. Two years ago my husband gave me three amaryllis for Christmas. Last year two bloomed and this year the red one bloomed and it was amazing!! Bigger than my head.

This year my MIL gave us a lovely gift of a large crock with 4 amaryllis. They are just blooming now.

The garden is waking up and all the plants we have been babying are coming back to life. Here is our beautiful alyssum, which should be an annual, making it into the perennial side.

EASTER ART IDEA

Try this fun idea for those Easter eggs!!

Make some awesome marbleized looking Easter Eggs quickly and

easily, without a lot of mess and spending a lot of money.

Here’s what you do:

Get some cheap white shaving cream, spread out on a cookie sheet.
Dribble food coloring across the surface.
Neon food coloring makes cooler looking eggs.
Use toothpicks to swirl the colors around in the shaving cream.
Take your dried, and cooled hard boiled egg, and roll it around in
the cream. You can use sandwich baggies as gloves to help keep
coloring consistent, keep finger prints off, & keep from staining you
Sit colored eggs to the side on a paper plate and allow them to dry
for fifteen minutes.
After allowing the eggs to sit, wipe off shaving cream & rinse with
water!

Here we are starting a whole new year and I am still blogging! So, all of you who thought I couldn't keep it up, you were wrong!! I can't seem to stop sharing the beauty and adventure of our gardening.

This year we are planning to have a large veggie garden. I have already cordoned off a secure area,(which Scoobs already proved was inadequate when his ball ended up in there). I was going to start preparing the soil when I realized that if I put them in pots they would be high enough for the dogs not to bother them growing. So, that's the plan.

Today I started seeds in growing pans to start slowly in the greenhouse to beat any frost we might have. Today I started with Cukes (Muncher and National Pickling) and Rainbow Peppers (Grand Bell Mix). I would love to make pickles as I have never done this! We so enjoyed the bell peppers we had last year and used them to snack on them, in herbed vinegars and dried to use in recipes later.

Also, it's time for bulbs and sadly, after reaching the 1000 mark for planted bulbs, we realized that the dogs are just tearing them up as they run thru the yard. So I am relocating them into pots, where they can sit undisturbed. It's always good to separate your bulbs every couple of years to help their growth.

This is this year's new bulbs I planted today: Ranunculus, Grape Hyacinths (Muscari), Allium, Red/Yellow striped tulips, black tulips, pink parrot tulips, rainbow tulips crocus, chionodoxa, crocosmia and some non-bulbs, morning glories. Tomorrow I will continue with more veggies and some sunflowers. I am going to add sweet corn, spinach, stringless green beans, pattypan squash, zucchini, tomatoes, lettuce, pumpkin, watermelon and peas.

The weather has been so wacky, I am taking advantage of planting early to capitalize on all this sunny weather. Still aways to Spring so they will be quietly, happily growing in the greenhouse until it's time to transplant.

Hope all of you get to play in the dirt a bit this year!

Here's some from my FB page in case you have missed them. Enjoy the awkwardness!

About Time

2013-10-11T21:06:00.000-07:00

Happy Veteran's Day! To all who served, or who kept the home fires burning, we thank you.

Well! It has been quite a while since I have posted. For those of you who are new, welcome. This used to be a daily blog but now it is a "whenever" blog...much easier to read and there are lots of great posts for you to rummage through. Don't miss our Index page and List of Recipes and Craft Ideas!

We celebrated the first fire in the fireplace of the season yesterday. Always something to celebrate because it means Fall is officially here to stay.

Still have tomatoes on the vine and hope they quickly ripen before the first frost. It seems that the first frost always sneaks up on us so keeping a good watch on the remaining tomatoes, green beans, pears and bell peppers that are still ripening.

Been chilly at night here in the High Desert and snowed in the local mountains this weekend. Of course, being typically California, it was also 75 degrees today and sunny. Chickens are taking advantage of the weather and are still laying strong.

We have been visited by a plethora of fauna lately...baby wild bunnies have a few dens, a red tailed hawk (we could do without his visits), a family of wild quail ( sooo cute the babies trotting after Mama with Daddy proudly watching out), baby bats, alligator lizards and a HUGE roadrunner who loves our front fountain.

Hope where you are the weather is cooperating!

Hi, Everyone,

Don't know how the weather is where you are, but here it is late afternoon and 112F. Whew! Keeping a close watch on our animals and making sure they are staying inside.

Weirdly, the chickens are laying like crazy. Must be all that sweat (DO chickens sweat?)

Had 4 beautiful amaryllis blooms, 2 multi-striped red and white and 2 pure white. Gigantic blooms, as big as my head!

Harvested a bounty today with strawberries, yellow, sungold and red tomatoes, sugar snap beans and apricots. Never had SunGold tomatoes before, they are the orange ones and soooo sweet.

Here are some more giggles for ya...but seriously, they are even more disturbing! But enjoy!

Stay cool!

Howdy, everyone!

Garden is growing great with lots of veggies and fruits ripening in the sun.Duplicated my Grandmothers garden from 60 years ago and think of her as I harvest.

Been caught up on my genealogy and life intruding so hasn't been much time to talk atcha all, but hope that Summer, only two days away here!, will bring much fun in the sun and time with friends and family.

We are heating it up on Pinterest with our hilarious awkward family moments caught on film. Enjoy!

Even in the bitterness of dawn

Breaking in the coldest hour of hell,

Ablaze with all the beauty of their burning,

Rendering a richness that will keep

Yet warm within the cavern of his yearning."

Trace four hearts onto a piece of folded cardstock. Write romantic words inside each heart...such as I LOVE U, BE MINE, LET'S KISS, UR MINE, CALL ME, LOVER, etc. You can get inspirations from candy hearts. Copy the card onto plain paper to get the heart template; cut out. Cut a strip of clear contact paper long enough to make four hearts. Trace around the heart template on the paper side of the contact paper.

To make the scratch-off solution, mix 2 parts metallic acrylic paint with 1 part dishwashing liquid. Using a small, flat paintbrush, apply a thin coat of the scratch-off solution onto the front side of the contact paper and let dry for an hour. Repeat with a second coat; add a third coat if your paint looks streaky.

Cut out the hearts (following the traced outline), peel off the backing, and stick to your traced hearts on the front of your card. Attach a brand new penny to the front, with the words ARE YOU LUCKY IN LOVE? Cute as can be!

Christmas Cactus Debunked

GARDEN UPDATE
Rainy today but at least it is not NINE degrees!! We are hovering around the low 50s and plenty of gray clouds skittering across the skies.
CHRISTMAS CACTUS DEBUNKED
We have many Christmas cacti and find them to be beautiful and exotic when they bloom. I have heard horror advice from my MIL on how you torture them to get them to bloom...not me.

Came across this fantastic article by Jack Christensen that gives you step by step, month by month advice. This is one to save and print out. Enjoy.

Christmas cactus plants are really quite stunning in bloom, aren't they? They grow naturally in tropical climates, so they require specialized care in our locations, and they can sometimes be a bit finicky. They also do not make good houseplants, because the main factors that help them to keep growing and blooming rarely exist indoors.

To initiate flowering, these plants require cool night temperatures- generally in the range of 50-55 degrees F- as well as a minimum of 12-14 hours of darkness per day. If you bring the plant indoors, perhaps this requirement is best achieved by placing it in an unused bathroom each night while in bloom. There is also one more requirement. These plants need some water on a regular basis so the growing medium remains slightly moist on a consistent basis. Oddly, although the Christmas cactus will not tolerate any degree of drying out, they also will not survive if the soil mix remains soggy. Under these conditions each flower may last several days and the whole plant could be in bloom for a couple of months.

By the calendar, here is a general schedule for growing a Christmas cactus. Keep in mind that during daylight hours all year long it should receive bright but no direct sunlight-never the direct rays of the sun.
JANUARY-flowering; Keep soil mix slightly damp but not wet. Feed once during the month at half the recommended rate. Keep in a place where the temperatures stay above 50 degrees at night. Reduce watering when flowering stops.
FEBRUARY- resting; 55 degrees; light, infrequent watering-just enough so that the soil mix does not dry out; feed once during the month at half the recommended rate.
MARCH, APRIL, MAY- water thoroughly whenever potting mix first begins to dry out; feed monthly with a liquid formula recommended for flowering plants- at the normally recommended rate.
JUNE, JULY, AUGUST, SEPTEMBER- keep the plant outdoors in a spot away from direct sunlight but not in deep shade; water thoroughly whenever potting mix first begins to dry out; feed monthly; protect from snails and slugs.
OCTOBER- stop feeding; water less often; keep in a cool place (50-55degreesF); let the plant have 12-14 hours of complete darkness each night so it will prepare to flower.
NOVEMBER, DECEMBER- flowering; plant may remain outside or be gently moved to a bright spot indoors; water normally; feed monthly at half strength; keep temperatures between 50-55F degrees, at least at night; if indoors, move plant each evening to a dark room overnight to prolong the flowering period.

Whether they are members of the genus Schlumbergera or Zygocactus, Christmas cacti may be cut back at any time between winter and spring. You may remove enough stems to even out the plant and give it a balanced appearance. Do not get too carried away, however. Just bring it back under control.

Thicker stems may be cut with clippers at the points where the two segments connect, but in general, it is better to twist off younger segments instead of cutting them. By the way, if you want, you can place the trimmings into a light, fluffy soil mix and they will usually root and grow into new plants that will bloom next year.

GARDEN GIGGLE

FAUNA

GARDEN GOODIES~SHARE OUR GARDEN RECIPE #0124 MICROWAVE CINNABON POPCORN

So seriously, this has to be the most evil, decadent temptation ever. NOT for the diabetic, or diet-conscious, this is full-on delicious. Feel free to add your own add-on's. Also almond bark is synonymous with vanilla candiquik, which interestingly can be flavored using OIL-based flavorings, which you can get at a cake/candy making place or Michaels in the candy section.

You Will Need:

(12 cups) air popped popcorn (if you like every square millimeter covered in caramel make 6 cups)(1) cup pecans, chopped coarsely

(1/2) cup brown sugar
(1) tsp. cinnamon

(1/2) cup butter

(1/4) cup corn syrup

(1) tsp. vanilla or almond flavoring

(1/2) tsp. baking soda
(2 –4) oz. almond bark (1 pkg vanilla candiquik)
Instructions:

To begin prepare your popcorn, make two bags of microwaved popcorn… You may have to adjust for mini-bags (individual servings). We made double of everything.

To be sure there weren’t any kernels, I poured the popped-corn into a bowl and tossed it a bit, to help the kernels to settle on bottom. Then I removed small handful at a time, and placed the kernel free popcorn into my largest mixing bowl. Once you get to the bottom of the bowl, just pick out the individual popcorn avoiding the kernels (this only takes about 2 minutes at the most!) Add chopped pecans to bowl and set aside.

To make the caramel, add the brown sugar and cinnamon in a large microwaveable bowl and mix well to combine. Add butter and corn syrup, don’t worry about combining there, just throw them in the microwave on high for 30 seconds, then stir to combine. Return sauce to microwave and heat for 2 minutes. Remove and stir (the bowl will be getting hot, so be careful!). Microwave for 2 more minutes, remove and whisk in the vanilla or almond and baking soda. Mixture will foam just a little. Pour caramel mixture over popcorn (we divided up the popcorn in separate bowls so all could be coated). Stir until all pieces are evenly coated. (if you like your popcorn chewy… dig in! No need to wait… but if you like it crunchy continue on!)

Now to save time in cleanup, be sure to line a rimmed baking pan with tin foil and then spray it with nonstick cooking spray. Pour popcorn caramel covered popcorn onto foil. Place in the oven and bake at 250°F for 30 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes.

Remove from oven. Melt the almond bark according to the package directions, drizzle over the popcorn and wait anxiously while it sets and cools. Break up any large chunks. Once the popcorn is completely cool store in an air tight container to avoid it getting stale. And, don't hate me for introducing you to temptation. :)

DID YOU KNOW...?
There is one Christmas Carol that has always baffled me. What in the world do leaping lords, French hens, swimming swans, and especially the partridge who won't come out of the pear tree have to do with Christmas? This week, I found out.

From 1558 until 1829, Roman Catholics in England were not permitted to practice their faith openly. Someone during that era wrote this carol as a catechism song for young Catholics. It has two levels of meaning: the surface meaning plus a hidden meaning known only to members of their church. Each element in the carol has a code word for a religious reality which the children could remember.

-The partridge in a pear tree was Jesus Christ.

-Two turtle doves were the Old and New Testaments.

-Three French hens stood for faith, hope and love.-

-The four calling birds were the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke &John.

-The five golden rings recalled the Torah or Law, the first five books of the Old Testament.

-The six geese a-laying stood for the six days of creation.

-Seven swans a-swimming represented the sevenfold gifts of the Holy Spirit--Prophesy, Serving, Teaching, Exhortation, Contribution, Leadership, and Mercy.

-The eight maids a-milking were the eight beatitudes.

-Nine ladies dancing were the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit--Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self Control.

-The ten lords a-leaping were the ten commandments.

-The eleven pipers piping stood for the eleven faithful disciples.

-The twelve drummers drumming symbolized the twelve points of belief in the Apostles' Creed.

And now YOU know, too!

GARDEN GOODIES~SHARE OUR GARDEN RECIPE #0123 VINTAGE CANDY DOTS

You Will Need:
(1) pound confectioners' sugar, plus more if needed
(5) tablespoons meringue powder (wilton.com)
(1/2) cup water, plus more if needed
food coloring

Instructions:

Use a baking sheet. Cut two 10-by-13-inch strips of freezer paper, and tape, shiny side down, to baking sheet.

Beat together sugar, meringue powder, and water with a mixer. Test it with a toothpick on a piece of freezer paper: Icing should form a domed dot that doesn't spread. If it forms a peak, it's too thick, so add a little more water, 1/2 teaspoon at a time. If it doesn't hold the dot shape, add a little more sugar, 1 teaspoon at a time.

Divide icing equally among bowls. Mix different colors in different bowls.

Transfer icing to resealable plastic bags. Squeeze into corner, close off top tightly with rubber bands, and cut a small opening in a corner of each bag to create a piping bag. Do this for each color.

Pipe dots onto freezer sheets, alternating colors, in any pattern desired.Let stand, uncovered, until dots are firm and dry enough to be pulled off papers, about 2 days.
Editor's Note: One box of confectioners' sugar yields enough royal icing to make 10 strips of 60 dots.

Merry Christmas!

2012-12-24T23:37:00.000-08:00

‘Twas the night before Christmas on Sesame Street

And the people were sleeping, ‘cause the people were beat
The snow had been falling for most of the day
And it lay over everything, sooty and grey

Now I was asleep with a gift of my Mama’s
A warm woolly pair of red flannel pajamas
When what should awake me from out of my dream
But a crash and a bang and a couple of screams

So up from my bed I arose with a shout
And ran to the window to check this scene out
The noise might of come from a mischievous kid
Or grouchy old Oscar, flippin’ his lid

But then what I saw nearly put me away
In the middle of Sesame Street, there’s a sleigh
With a jolly old guy, kinda smilin’ and cute
In a white flowing beard and a heavy red suit

Jumpin’ into my coat, I ran on out
‘Cause I had to discover what this was about
When I got to the sleigh this old dude said to me
“Please pardon the noise. I ran into a tree.
I ruined my sleigh, lost the boots off my feet,
and the toys from my bag are all over the street.”

From the way that he spoke, it was easy to dig
This cat simply had to be somebody big
So I said, “That’s no problem. I’ll lend you my sled
And an old pair of boots I keep under my bed.”

Then we picked up the street full of toys, he said “Great,
But I’m hassled and rushing terribly late,
So I’ve got to split. There’s appointments to keep,
And David, it’s time you were gettin’ to sleep.”

I said, “Sure, but you’re using my sled for your pack
And how do I know you’ll bring my sled back.”
Well, this sucker just giggled with all of his might
And he got on my sled and he flew out of sight!

I called after him, “Hey man, don’t put me on.
Please tell me your name.” But by then, he was gone
The street was deserted, nobody was there
The toys and the sled disappeared in thin air

Well there’s only person who flies Christmas night
So I knew that fat guy was Santa Claus, right?
And I really felt proud because you better believe
That I was the hero of that Christmas Eve

Next morning I woke up and jumped out of bed
And under the tree was a shiny new sled!
That’s how I helped Santa on one Christmas visit
And it’s only a story I made up, or is it?

We at Share Our Garden wish you all a holiday full of friends and good feelings.

bringing you the quirky, funniest and most interesting tweets from Twitter that we came across. Today we want to tell you about #26acts. It was thought up by Ann Curry from KNBC, who wanted to tell good news instead of heartbreaking news like Newton, Connecticut. So she proposed that we all do 26 acts of kindness to make up for the 26 slayings. They don't have to be a lot of money or involved, just little things go a long way. Then go on Twitter, under #26acts and inspire others. We did our first one yesterday when we gave firewood to a needy neighbor who was trying to use a machete to cut down an old dead tree for some firewood. Looking forward to doing more...share if you have done any, we would love to hear! This lady left gift certificates for a free child's book under 26 windshields in her town. She included a note stating which victim it was done for.

We think it is wonderful and wanted to 'pass it on'...warning, random acts of kindness are addictive!!

LETTERS TO SANTA
Dear Santa,

How are you? How is Mrs. Claus? I hope everyone, from the reindeer to the elves, is fine. I have been a very good boy this year. I would like an X-Box 360 with Call of Duty IV and an iPhone 5 for Christmas. I hope you remember that come Christmas Day.

Merry Christmas,
Timmy Jones
-----------------------------------------------------------
Dear Timmy

Thank you for your letter. Mrs. Claus, the reindeer and the elves are all fine and thank you for asking about them. Santa is a little worried all the time you spend playing video games and texting. Santa wouldn't want you to get fat. Since you have indeed been a good boy, I think I'll bring you something you can go outside and play with.

Merry Christmas,
Santa Claus
------------------------------------------------------------
Mr. Claus,

Seeing that I have fulfilled the "Naughty vs. Nice" contract, set by you I might add, I feel confident that you can see your way clear to granting me what I have asked for. I certainly wouldn't want to turn this joyous season into one of litigation. Also, don't you think that a jibe at my weight coming from an overweight man who goes out once a year is a bit trite?

Respectfully,
Tim Jones
-------------------------------------------------------------
Mr. Jones,

While I have acknowledged you have met the "nice" criteria, need I remind you that your Christmas list is a request and in no way is it a guarantee of services provided. Should you wish to pursue legal action, well that is your right. Please know, however, that my attorneys have been on retainer ever since the Burgermeister Meisterburger incident and will be more than happy to take you on in open court. Additionally, the exercise I alluded to will not only improve your health, but also improve your social skills and potentially help clear up a complexion that looks like the bottom of the Burger King fry bin most days.

Very Truly Yours,
S Claus
---------------------------------------------------------------
Now look here Fat Man,

I told you what I want and I expect you to bring it. I was attempting to be polite about this but you brought my looks and my friends into this. Now you just be disrespectin' me. I'm about to tweet my homies and we're gonna be waiting for your fat butt and I'm taking my game console, my game, my phone, and whatever else I want. WHAT EVER I WANT, MAN!

T-Bone
---------------------------------------------------------------
Listen Pizza Face,

Seriously??? You think a dude that breaks into every house in the world on one night and never gets caught sweats a skinny G-banger wannabe? "He sees you when you're sleeping; He knows when you're awake". Sound familiar, genius? You know what kind of resources I have at my disposal. I got your **** wired, Jack. I go all around the world and see ways to hurt people that if I described them right now, you'd throw up your Totino's pizza rolls all over the carpet of your mom's basement. You're not getting what you asked
for, but I'm still stopping by your crib to stomp a mud hole in your butt and then walk it dry. Chew on that, Petunia.

S Clizzy
------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Santa,

Bring me whatever you see fit. I'll appreciate anything.

Timmy
------------------------------------------------------------------
Timmy,

That's what I thought.

Santa
