Had some snow a few days ago...pretty stuff, swirling in flurries gently down to the earth. Lately it has been BBBBRRRRRRRRR. Doing some garden clean up, love to see the new stuff hiding underneath!

GARDEN GOODIES~SHARE OUR GARDEN RECYCLED ART PROJECT #0014 THE LOVE BEE

Make this adorable garden bee as a welcome to the neighborhood or hostess gift, teacher gift, etc. Super easy and oh-so-bee-youtiful!

You will need:

Acrylic Paints – Baby Pink, Black, White and Red (Editor's Note: You could do a yellow and black version of this project also)
Clay Pots, (1) 4"Clay Pot, (1)2"Clay Pot and (1) Clay Saucer
Pipe Cleaners – White, Black and Green
Pencil
Paintbrushes
red cardstock
Lace
4"Ribbon
Low Heat Glue Gun
Marker, Extra Fine – Black

Instructions:

Base coat both pots with Baby Pink. Base coat the saucer and inside the larger pot with Black. Allow to dry. Add Red stripes to smaller pot.

Add White eyes using a pencil eraser. Use a stencil brush or cottonball and Red to lightly paint cheeks. Use paintbrush and black to paint the mouth. Add black dots to the centers of the white eyes with the end of the paintbrush.

Glue the pots together, and then glue the body to the black saucer.

Tie a lace bow for the wings and glue to the back.

Glue a black pipe cleaner to the back of the bee for the arms and roll up ends.

Glue two black pipe cleaners to the saucer for legs. Roll up the ends and bend at knee.

Fold a green pipe cleaner in half and roll up the ends. Cut a heart from the red cardstock. Write your love message with extra fine marker. Glue heart to the green pipe cleaner. Place in one bee hand.

Fold white pipe cleaner in half and roll up ends for the antennas. Glue to the inside of front of pot.

Supposed to be rainy and some snow in a few days. Poor outside plants...still recovering from the night it was NINE degrees! Seeing some beautiful little flowers popping up with the cold nights. Hubby and I have both had the flu from hell now for almost 2 weeks. I personally am on Day 4 of having no voice. :(

GARDEN GOODIES~SHARE OUR GARDEN CRAFT RECIPE #0125 SCRATCH OFF CARDS

Trace four hearts onto a piece of folded cardstock. Write romantic words inside each heart...such as I LOVE U, BE MINE, LET'S KISS, UR MINE, CALL ME, LOVER, etc. You can get inspirations from candy hearts. Copy the card onto plain paper to get the heart template; cut out. Cut a strip of clear contact paper long enough to make four hearts. Trace around the heart template on the paper side of the contact paper.

To make the scratch-off solution, mix 2 parts metallic acrylic paint with 1 part dishwashing liquid. Using a small, flat paintbrush, apply a thin coat of the scratch-off solution onto the front side of the contact paper and let dry for an hour. Repeat with a second coat; add a third coat if your paint looks streaky.

Cut out the hearts (following the traced outline), peel off the backing, and stick to your traced hearts on the front of your card. Attach a brand new penny to the front, with the words ARE YOU LUCKY IN LOVE? Cute as can be!

Rainy today but at least it is not NINE degrees!! We are hovering around the low 50s and plenty of gray clouds skittering across the skies.
CHRISTMAS CACTUS DEBUNKED
We have many Christmas cacti and find them to be beautiful and exotic when they bloom. I have heard horror advice from my MIL on how you torture them to get them to bloom...not me.

Came across this fantastic article by Jack Christensen that gives you step by step, month by month advice. This is one to save and print out. Enjoy.

Christmas cactus plants are really quite stunning in bloom, aren't they? They grow naturally in tropical climates, so they require specialized care in our locations, and they can sometimes be a bit finicky. They also do not make good houseplants, because the main factors that help them to keep growing and blooming rarely exist indoors.

To initiate flowering, these plants require cool night temperatures- generally in the range of 50-55 degrees F- as well as a minimum of 12-14 hours of darkness per day. If you bring the plant indoors, perhaps this requirement is best achieved by placing it in an unused bathroom each night while in bloom. There is also one more requirement. These plants need some water on a regular basis so the growing medium remains slightly moist on a consistent basis. Oddly, although the Christmas cactus will not tolerate any degree of drying out, they also will not survive if the soil mix remains soggy. Under these conditions each flower may last several days and the whole plant could be in bloom for a couple of months.

By the calendar, here is a general schedule for growing a Christmas cactus. Keep in mind that during daylight hours all year long it should receive bright but no direct sunlight-never the direct rays of the sun.
JANUARY-flowering; Keep soil mix slightly damp but not wet. Feed once during the month at half the recommended rate. Keep in a place where the temperatures stay above 50 degrees at night. Reduce watering when flowering stops.
FEBRUARY- resting; 55 degrees; light, infrequent watering-just enough so that the soil mix does not dry out; feed once during the month at half the recommended rate.
MARCH, APRIL, MAY- water thoroughly whenever potting mix first begins to dry out; feed monthly with a liquid formula recommended for flowering plants- at the normally recommended rate.
JUNE, JULY, AUGUST, SEPTEMBER- keep the plant outdoors in a spot away from direct sunlight but not in deep shade; water thoroughly whenever potting mix first begins to dry out; feed monthly; protect from snails and slugs.
OCTOBER- stop feeding; water less often; keep in a cool place (50-55degreesF); let the plant have 12-14 hours of complete darkness each night so it will prepare to flower.
NOVEMBER, DECEMBER- flowering; plant may remain outside or be gently moved to a bright spot indoors; water normally; feed monthly at half strength; keep temperatures between 50-55F degrees, at least at night; if indoors, move plant each evening to a dark room overnight to prolong the flowering period.

Whether they are members of the genus Schlumbergera or Zygocactus, Christmas cacti may be cut back at any time between winter and spring. You may remove enough stems to even out the plant and give it a balanced appearance. Do not get too carried away, however. Just bring it back under control.

Thicker stems may be cut with clippers at the points where the two segments connect, but in general, it is better to twist off younger segments instead of cutting them. By the way, if you want, you can place the trimmings into a light, fluffy soil mix and they will usually root and grow into new plants that will bloom next year.

Man, is there a lot of work needed to be done in the garden now! I am trying to not look closely so I won't be tempted to prune early. I am letting the garden sleep....shhhhhh

GARDEN GOODIES~SHARE OUR GARDEN RECIPE #0124 MICROWAVE CINNABON POPCORN

So seriously, this has to be the most evil, decadent temptation ever. NOT for the diabetic, or diet-conscious, this is full-on delicious. Feel free to add your own add-on's. Also almond bark is synonymous with vanilla candiquik, which interestingly can be flavored using OIL-based flavorings, which you can get at a cake/candy making place or Michaels in the candy section.

You Will Need:

(12 cups) air popped popcorn (if you like every square millimeter covered in caramel make 6 cups)(1) cup pecans, chopped coarsely

(1/2) cup brown sugar
(1) tsp. cinnamon

(1/2) cup butter

(1/4) cup corn syrup

(1) tsp. vanilla or almond flavoring

(1/2) tsp. baking soda
(2 –4) oz. almond bark (1 pkg vanilla candiquik)
Instructions:

To begin prepare your popcorn, make two bags of microwaved popcorn… You may have to adjust for mini-bags (individual servings). We made double of everything.

To be sure there weren’t any kernels, I poured the popped-corn into a bowl and tossed it a bit, to help the kernels to settle on bottom. Then I removed small handful at a time, and placed the kernel free popcorn into my largest mixing bowl. Once you get to the bottom of the bowl, just pick out the individual popcorn avoiding the kernels (this only takes about 2 minutes at the most!) Add chopped pecans to bowl and set aside.

To make the caramel, add the brown sugar and cinnamon in a large microwaveable bowl and mix well to combine. Add butter and corn syrup, don’t worry about combining there, just throw them in the microwave on high for 30 seconds, then stir to combine. Return sauce to microwave and heat for 2 minutes. Remove and stir (the bowl will be getting hot, so be careful!). Microwave for 2 more minutes, remove and whisk in the vanilla or almond and baking soda. Mixture will foam just a little. Pour caramel mixture over popcorn (we divided up the popcorn in separate bowls so all could be coated). Stir until all pieces are evenly coated. (if you like your popcorn chewy… dig in! No need to wait… but if you like it crunchy continue on!)

Now to save time in cleanup, be sure to line a rimmed baking pan with tin foil and then spray it with nonstick cooking spray. Pour popcorn caramel covered popcorn onto foil. Place in the oven and bake at 250°F for 30 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes.

Remove from oven. Melt the almond bark according to the package directions, drizzle over the popcorn and wait anxiously while it sets and cools. Break up any large chunks. Once the popcorn is completely cool store in an air tight container to avoid it getting stale. And, don't hate me for introducing you to temptation. :)

Don't forget your furry catnip lovers for homemade treats! Here are three recipes to get your started.

Fish-tive Pretzels

You Will Need:

* 3/4 cup canned tuna or salmon, drained well 1/4 cup warm water
* 1 tablespoon butter
* 1 cup whole-wheat flour

Directions:

Preheat oven to 300 degrees Fahrenheit. In a medium size bowl, mash canned fish well with a fork and combine with water and butter. Add flour to form a dough. Divide dough into 24 pieces, roll each piece into a rope, and shape into a pretzel. Place on un-greased cookie sheet and bake for 20-25 minutes until lightly browned. Makes two dozen. Note: dough can be rolled out and shaped with cookie cutters before placing on cookie sheets.

Gobble-ups

You Will Need:

1 cup cooked turkey or chicken
1/2 cup beef or chicken broth
1 tablespoon margarine
1 cup whole wheat flour

Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Combine turkey, broth and margarine. Add flour to make a soft dough. Add additional flour 1 tablespoon at a time if dough is too sticky. Roll out dough and cut with cookie cutter, or break off pieces and form into interesting shapes. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes on ungreased cookie sheets. Makes about 30 treats.

Cheese Balls
You Will Need:
2 tablespoons soft margarine
1/2 cup grated cheddar cheese
1 egg white
1/2 cup flour
1/2 tsp catnip

Preheat oven to 250 degrees Fahrenheit. Combine margarine, cheese, catnip and egg white. Add flour to make a soft dough. Separate dough into half-inch pieces and roll into balls. Bake on ungreased cookie sheet for 35 minutes. Makes about 12 balls.

DID YOU KNOW...?
There is one Christmas Carol that has always baffled me. What in the world do leaping lords, French hens, swimming swans, and especially the partridge who won't come out of the pear tree have to do with Christmas? This week, I found out.

From 1558 until 1829, Roman Catholics in England were not permitted to practice their faith openly. Someone during that era wrote this carol as a catechism song for young Catholics. It has two levels of meaning: the surface meaning plus a hidden meaning known only to members of their church. Each element in the carol has a code word for a religious reality which the children could remember.

-The partridge in a pear tree was Jesus Christ.

-Two turtle doves were the Old and New Testaments.

-Three French hens stood for faith, hope and love.-

-The four calling birds were the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke &John.

-The five golden rings recalled the Torah or Law, the first five books of the Old Testament.

-The six geese a-laying stood for the six days of creation.

-Seven swans a-swimming represented the sevenfold gifts of the Holy Spirit--Prophesy, Serving, Teaching, Exhortation, Contribution, Leadership, and Mercy.

-The eight maids a-milking were the eight beatitudes.

-Nine ladies dancing were the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit--Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self Control.

-The ten lords a-leaping were the ten commandments.

-The eleven pipers piping stood for the eleven faithful disciples.

-The twelve drummers drumming symbolized the twelve points of belief in the Apostles' Creed.

You Will Need:
(1) pound confectioners' sugar, plus more if needed
(5) tablespoons meringue powder (wilton.com)
(1/2) cup water, plus more if needed
food coloring

Instructions:

Use a baking sheet. Cut two 10-by-13-inch strips of freezer paper, and tape, shiny side down, to baking sheet.

Beat together sugar, meringue powder, and water with a mixer. Test it with a toothpick on a piece of freezer paper: Icing should form a domed dot that doesn't spread. If it forms a peak, it's too thick, so add a little more water, 1/2 teaspoon at a time. If it doesn't hold the dot shape, add a little more sugar, 1 teaspoon at a time.

Divide icing equally among bowls. Mix different colors in different bowls.

Transfer icing to resealable plastic bags. Squeeze into corner, close off top tightly with rubber bands, and cut a small opening in a corner of each bag to create a piping bag. Do this for each color.

Pipe dots onto freezer sheets, alternating colors, in any pattern desired.Let stand, uncovered, until dots are firm and dry enough to be pulled off papers, about 2 days.
Editor's Note: One box of confectioners' sugar yields enough royal icing to make 10 strips of 60 dots.

Merry Christmas!

‘Twas the night before Christmas on Sesame Street

And the people were sleeping, ‘cause the people were beat
The snow had been falling for most of the day
And it lay over everything, sooty and grey

Now I was asleep with a gift of my Mama’s
A warm woolly pair of red flannel pajamas
When what should awake me from out of my dream
But a crash and a bang and a couple of screams

So up from my bed I arose with a shout
And ran to the window to check this scene out
The noise might of come from a mischievous kid
Or grouchy old Oscar, flippin’ his lid

But then what I saw nearly put me away
In the middle of Sesame Street, there’s a sleigh
With a jolly old guy, kinda smilin’ and cute
In a white flowing beard and a heavy red suit

Jumpin’ into my coat, I ran on out
‘Cause I had to discover what this was about
When I got to the sleigh this old dude said to me
“Please pardon the noise. I ran into a tree.
I ruined my sleigh, lost the boots off my feet,
and the toys from my bag are all over the street.”

From the way that he spoke, it was easy to dig
This cat simply had to be somebody big
So I said, “That’s no problem. I’ll lend you my sled
And an old pair of boots I keep under my bed.”

Then we picked up the street full of toys, he said “Great,
But I’m hassled and rushing terribly late,
So I’ve got to split. There’s appointments to keep,
And David, it’s time you were gettin’ to sleep.”

I said, “Sure, but you’re using my sled for your pack
And how do I know you’ll bring my sled back.”
Well, this sucker just giggled with all of his might
And he got on my sled and he flew out of sight!

I called after him, “Hey man, don’t put me on.
Please tell me your name.” But by then, he was gone
The street was deserted, nobody was there
The toys and the sled disappeared in thin air

Well there’s only person who flies Christmas night
So I knew that fat guy was Santa Claus, right?
And I really felt proud because you better believe
That I was the hero of that Christmas Eve

Next morning I woke up and jumped out of bed
And under the tree was a shiny new sled!
That’s how I helped Santa on one Christmas visit
And it’s only a story I made up, or is it?

Don't forget your furry friends this holiday!

You Will Need:

(1/2) cup unsweetened applesauce
(1) egg, slightly beaten
(1/2) cup chunky peanut butter
(1) teaspoon vanilla
(1- 1/4) cups water
(3) cups whole-wheat flour
(1) cup white flour
(1/2) cup cornmeal
(1/2) cup quick-cooking oats
(1/4) cup chopped peanuts

Preheat oven to 350F degrees. In a large mixing bowl, combine applesauce, egg, peanut butter, vanilla and water. Mix well. Add flours, corn meal, oats and peanuts and mix well to form a dough. Turn dough onto a floured surface and knead until thoroughly mixed together. Roll out dough to 1/4 inch thick and cut out shapes. Place on greased baking sheet and bake for 45 minutes until lightly browned. Cool on rack. Makes 30 cookies.

It was thought up by Ann Curry from KNBC, who wanted to tell good news instead of heartbreaking news like Newton, Connecticut. So she proposed that we all do 26 acts of kindness to make up for the 26 slayings. They don't have to be a lot of money or involved, just little things go a long way. Then go on Twitter, under #26acts and inspire others. We did our first one yesterday when we gave firewood to a needy neighbor who was trying to use a machete to cut down an old dead tree for some firewood. Looking forward to doing more...share if you have done any, we would love to hear! This lady left gift certificates for a free child's book under 26 windshields in her town. She included a note stating which victim it was done for.

We think it is wonderful and wanted to 'pass it on'...warning, random acts of kindness are addictive!!

Had to wait for four hours before I could turn off the heater in the greenhouse and the chicken area because it was 34F all morning...finally crept up to 40 and I gave the heaters a small break before the afternoon sunset. The fountain is frozen solid.

nce upon a time, long ago, a gentle mother was busily cleaning the house for the most wonderful day of the year.

Not a speck of dust was left on the day when the Christ Child was to come and bless the house on Christmas Eve. Even the spiders had been banished from their cozy corner in the ceiling to avoid the housewife's broom. They finally fled to the farthest corner
of the forgotten attic.

'Twas Christmas Eve at last! The tree was decorated and waiting for the children to see it. But the poor spiders were frantic, for they could not see the tree, nor be present for the Christ Child's visit. The oldest and wisest spider suggested that perhaps they could peep
through the crack in the door to see Him. Silently, they crept out of their attic and across the floor to wait in the crack in the threshold.

Suddenly, the door opened a wee bit, and quickly the spiders sneaked into the room. O, what a beautiful tree! The tree towered so high they couldn't see the ornaments on top. In fact, their eyes were so small they could see only one ornament at a time. They scurried up the trunk, out along each branch, filled with a happy wonder at the glittering beauty. They just had to see it all!Every place they went they left a trail of spiderweb. When at last they had inspected every bit of the Christmas tree and seen all the pretty things, it was shrouded in a haze of spider webs.

The Christ Child smiled as He thought of the happy spiders seeing His tree. But He knew the mother would not feel the same way and that she would be brokenhearted. So He reached out His hand
and touched the webs and blessed them. They all turned to shimmering, sparkling silver and gold. The tree glistened in greater beauty than ever before.

Ever since that time, we have hung tinsel on the tree, and according to the story, it has become a custom to include a spider among the decorations on the tree.

GARDEN GOODIES~SHARE OUR GARDEN CRAFT RECIPE #0121 CHOCOLATE CLOUDS

Satisfy a die-hard chocaholic with these dreamy desserts. Beware, they are best when served immediately.

You will need:

(12) pieces Refrigerated Chocolate Chip Cookie Bar Dough

(1) package (12 oz) Semi-Sweet Chocolate Morsels, divided

(1⁄4) cup milk
(1) container (8 oz) whipped topping, divided
(1) teaspoon vanilla extract

(12) 2-1/2" foil baking cups

wax paper

Instructions:

Heat oven to 350°F. Place 12 foil baking cups on cookie sheet. Line another cookie sheet with wax paper; set aside.

Place 1 piece cookie dough in each foil cup. Bake for 12 to 14 minutes, or until just baked and light golden brown. Remove cups to wire rack to cool completely.

Place 1 1/2 cups chocolate morsels and milk in large, microwave-safe bowl. Microwave, uncovered, on high (100 percent) power for 1 minute. Remove and stir. If morsels retain some of their original shape, microwave at additional 10- to 15-second intervals, stirring just until melted. Cool to room temperature, 20 minutes.

Reserve 1/2 cup whipped topping. Combine remaining whipped topping and vanilla extract in medium bowl. Gently fold half of the whipped topping mixture into chocolate mixture. Add remaining whipped topping mixture, and mix lightly. Spoon over cookie bases in muffin cups. Refrigerate for 1 hour.

Meanwhile, place remaining chocolate morsels in small, heavy-duty plastic bag. Microwave on high (100 percent) power for 30 seconds; knead gently. Microwave at additional 10- to 15-second intervals, kneading until melted and smooth.

Cut tiny corner from bag. Onto cookie sheet lined with wax paper, squeeze chocolate into (12) 1 1/2- to 2-inch stars. Go back and make 12 more stars, over the first 12, so the points are not lined up. Place cookie sheet in refrigerator until chocolate is firm, 5 to 10 minutes.

Top each cup with a small dollop of reserved whipped topping. With tip of knife, gently remove stars from wax paper and insert, standing up, into whipped topping. Serve immediately. Yields 12 servings.

Creeping Toward Xmas

T'was the Internet Night Before Christmas

T’was the night before Christmas, when all through the Net,

There were hacker's a surfing. Nerds? Yeah, you bet.

The e-mails were stacked by the modem with care,

In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there.

The newbies were nestled all snug by their screens,

While visions of Java danced in their dreams.

My wife on the sofa and me with a snack,

We just settled down at my rig (it's a Mac).

When out in the Web there arose such a clatter,

I jumped to the site to see what was the matter.

To a new page my Mac flew like a flash,

Then made a slight gurgle. It started to crash!!

I gasped at the thought and started to grouse,

Then turned my head sideways and clicked on my mouse.

When what to my wondering eyes should appear?

My Mac jumped to a page that wasn't quite clear.

When the image resolved, so bright and so quick,

I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick!

More rapid than mainframes, more graphics they came,

Then Nick glanced toward my screen, my Mac called them by name;

"Now Compaq! Now Acer!", my speaker did reel;

"On Apple! On Gateway!" Santa started to squeal!

"Jump onto the circuits! And into the chip!

Now speed it up! Speed it up! Make this thing hip!"

The screen gave a flicker, he was into my "Ram",

Then into my room rose a full hologram!

He was dressed in all red, from his head to his shoes,

Which were black (the white socks he really should lose).

He pulled out some discs he had stored in his backpack.

Santa looked like a dude who was rarin' to hack!

His eyes, how they twinkled! His glasses, how techno!

This ain't the same Santa that I used to know!

With a wink of his eye and a nod of his head,

Santa soon let me know I had nothing to dread.

He spoke not a word, gave my Mac a quick poke,

And accessed my C drive with only a stroke.

He defragged my hard drive, and added a "Dimm",

Then threw in some cool games, just on a whim!

He worked without noise, his fingers they flew!

He distorted some pictures with Kai's Power Goo!

He updated Office, Excel and Quicken,

Then added a screensaver with a red clucking chicken!

My eyes widened a bit, my mouth stood agape,

As he added the latest version of Netscape.

The drive gave a whirl, as if it were pleased,

St. Nick coyly smiled, the computer appeased.

Then placing his finger on the bridge of his nose,

Santa turned into nothing but ones and zeros!

He flew back into my screen and through my uplink,

Back into the net with barely a blink.

But I heard his sweet voice as he flew from my sight,

"Happy surfing to all, and to all a good byte!"

The trombonist and bandleader Glenn Miller, the biggest star on the American pop-music scene in the years immediately preceding World War II was a man who set aside his brilliant career right at its peak in 1942 to serve his country as leader of the USAAF dance band. It was in that capacity that Captain Glenn Miller boarded a single-engine aircraft at an airfield outside of London on December 15, 1944—an aircraft that would go missing over the English Channel en route to France for a congratulatory performance for American troops that had recently helped to liberate Paris.

It would be difficult to overstate the magnitude of Glenn Miller's success in the years immediately proceeding America's entry into World War II. Though he was a relatively unspectacular instrumentalist himself—he'd played the trombone in various prominent orchestras but never distinguished himself as a performer—Miller the bandleader came to dominate the latter portion of the swing era on the strength of his disciplined arrangements and an innovation in orchestration that put the high-pitched clarinet on the melody line doubled by the saxophone section an octave below. This trademark sound helped the Glenn Miller Orchestra earn an unprecedented string of popular hits from 1939 to 1942, including the iconic versions of numbers like "In The Mood" (1939), "Tuxedo Junction" (1939) and "Chattanooga Choo Choo" (1941), as well as Miller's self-penned signature tune, "Moonlight Serenade" (1939).

The Glenn Miller Orchestra played its last-ever concert under Miller's direction on September 27, 1942, in Passaic, New Jersey, and shortly thereafter, Miller entered the Army. After nearly two years spent stateside broadcasting a weekly radio program calledI Sustain The Wings out of New York City, Miller formed a new 50-piece USAAF dance band and departed for England in the summer of 1944, giving hundreds of performances to Allied troops over the next six months before embarking on his fateful trip to France on this day in 1944.
The wreckage of Miller's plane was never found. His official military status remains Missing in Action.

Age Guideline: 5 Years and Up
Time Required: 30 minutes
You Will Need:

Christmas Tree Light Bulb
Small to medium red Pom-pom
Googly Eyes
Chenille Stem
Gold Thread or Ribbon
Craft Glue
Scissors

Instructions:Use the photo here as a guide for where to glue on everything. Start out by adding the pom-pom nose and googly eyes.Cut a piece of gold thread or a thin ribbon and tie it into a loop for hanging. Glue the loop to light bulb. Form antlers out of a chenille stem and glue it to the light bulb. Once all of the glue is dry, you can hang it up!
