How Did the Company Grow?

After the shop was opened, Ben and Jerry promoted a buy one get one free cone offer. With that way, there was a long line each day in front of the shop. Ben and Jerry wanted to be a host for a free film festival because they wanted to connect with the community. They were getting well-known in Vermont.

On the first anniversary of the shop, they wanted to celebrate it, and they gave free ice cream to all consumers. “They truly believed that the joy was in the journey, and were determined to seize upon every opportunity to have fun that came their way. Ben and Jerry came to describe their business as being “funky,” which to them meant honest, not frills, handmade, and homemade.” (Lager, 1994, p. 36) Beside those reasons, there were two other important reasons why the company grew quickly and became popular. The first reason was creative flavors. Jerry was creating new flavors, so they did not need to hire someone to invent new flavors. Giving special names, such as New York Super Fudge Chunk, Cherry Garcia, Chunky Monkey, Rainforest Crunch and Economic Crunch to each flavor attracted consumers, and the sales by 1987 increased to $32 million (Richards, n.d. retrieved 09/23/2009). According to Rob Michalak, Ben & Jerry’s director of social mission and public elation, consumers made a connection between the flavors and their stories. Thereby, the emotional relationship appeared between the flavors and the consumers (Seireeni, 2008). The second reason was social and environmental responsibilities. Ben & Jerry’s manager of natural resources, Andrea Asch, believes that consumers value the social and environmental mission. The company’s mission includes several aims, (Richards, n.d. retrieved 09/23/2009) such as:

• Recycled materials were used to make an original scoop shop
• Created a Green Team, to educate the employees of the company about environment
• Using solar panels on the company’s buses

Some may place it as an inseparable bond between two individuals who have an insatiable need for each other. Some may also value it higher than what any monetary prize can provide. I have always wondered this for myself: when will I ever be in the situation where I am asking myself this question? Undoubtedly, I can say it is highly unlikely that I will ever be in the same situation as Demi Moore and Woody Harrelson’s characters in the 1993 movie, Indecent Proposal.

The words of the billionaire in the film, John Cage, played by Robert Redford were exactly “if I had you, I would not share you with anybody.” Just in case you haven’t seen the movie, it’s about a married woman who agrees to have sex with another man for $1 million.

I first heard about this movie in a marketing class, and was eager to watch it soon after. Personally, I value the relationships I build with others more than anything else in the world. Yes, I can live without the creature comforts in life – I never had much to start with. Let’s face it, spending your life among crowds but still feeling empty inside would be terrible! I guess this situation relates to the amounts of wealth had by the billionaire in this movie and the difficulty he faces in having relationships with women who truly have feelings for him. I think of real-life wealthy figures, such as those who go on shows like the Bachelor and the Bachelorette, in hopes of finding someone who they can share true feelings with. As we all know, money is a great tempter, but not a security in relationship terms. Most of the relationships publicized are short-lived, or don’t really exist at all. This topic deeply saddens me because there are some wonderful wealthy people out there, but they can’t find “the one” because anyone will go with them. Take for example, Gurbaksh Chahal, Internet entrepreneur, founder of ClickAgents, BlueLithium and RadiumOne. He is a man of very humble beginnings who turned his passion and drive for achievement into a multi-million dollar empire. The love he expresses for his family is beyond words, and he takes care to keep a positive image in the public eye. Someone of his nature deserves to be living a happy life complete with someone to share it with, yet he probably faces the difficulty of finding someone who wants him for the man behind all the wealth and fame. In a way, this suppresses me from wanting to be anything more than comfortably wealthy, because it leads to this very problem.

Now back to the original question – what is the worth of love? Would you give up your partner for a night? Hopefully the answer is no. Don’t let go of the beautiful relationships that are so difficult to establish! So what if there is the occasional disagreement! Be able to laugh it off and enjoy life. Oh, and make sure you watch Indecent Proposal if you haven’t already!

How Did They Start?

When Jerry went back to New York, Ben offered him working together. They wanted to sell bagels; however, the equipment for making bagels was $40,000. For this reason, they had to give up selling bagels. They had a second choice which was making ice cream.

They attended an ice cream making course in Penn State University with $5 tuition. It was actually a correspondence school via mailing. After attending the course, they decided to find a location for the shop. They had two priorities on choosing the location. One was a large college population, and another was a warm weather condition. They eventually chose Saratoga Springs, but while they were collecting enough money to rent a shop, another homemade ice cream shop was opened. For this reason, they had to change the location, and finally they decided on Burlington, Vermont. After choosing the location, they worked on a business plan. Jerry had enough money which was $4000 to invest; however, Ben had only the half amount of $4000. For this reason, he wanted the rest of the money from his father. Ben’s father was happy to give money to his son because he thought that his son was going to be a businessman. Fred Burgess, a local banker, suggested that they needed to sell other things besides ice cream in Vermont in order to sustain the business in the winters. They were convinced, and they put whatever they needed in the described menu including soups, crepes, and brownies and the décor on the business plan. When they finished writing the business plan, which demanded a $20,000 loan, increasing the total amount of investment to $28,000 in the business, the pairs went to Merchants Bank to see Fred Burgess. Fred liked Ben and Jerry’s ideas, intelligence, and willingness, and he wanted to give them a chance to show themselves. After the approbation, co-founders, Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, of Ben &Jerry’s Homemade Ice Cream opened their first store on Saturday, May 5, 1978. (Lager, 1994)

Lindsay Lohan was released from a Los Angeles County jail just hours after she turned herself in to serve a 30-day sentence for violating probation.

Deputy Tony Moore said Lohan was released from the Century Regional Detention facility in Lynwood early Monday morning, less than five hours after she reported to jail.

The 25-year-old "Mean Girls" star was booked into the jail at 8:50 p.m. News crews staking out the jail and her Venice home said she made it back home by 2 a.m.

Lohan was released after serving what amounts to a fraction of a fraction of her sentence due to chronic overcrowding in the California prison system.

Abstract

After I researched entrepreneurs on the Internet, I was interested in Ben & Jerry’s because the founders of this company are childhood friends. I want to start a business with my friend, but my parents say that friends cannot establish a company. I thought this company is good to prove my parents how friends can be successful together.

Introduction

Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield met in the seventh-grade gym class, and they worked as direct mail sorters for Ben’s father during the summer. Ben Cohen found a job in his senior year, and he drove an ice cream truck and sold it. After graduating from high school, they wanted to go to college because they thought that going to college was the best way to stand on their own legs and to escape the military. While Ben was accepted by Colgate University, Jerry was accepted only by Oberlin even though he applied to various schools. In 1969, their ways were separated in order to get college degrees, but they gave a promise to each other to keep in touch. Ben could not be a serious student, and he was unsuccessful as a student. For this reason, he quit college in 1972. He wanted to be a potter, and in order to support his pottery traineeship, he worked in many different fields. He helped a baker, delivered Yellow Pages, mopped nights, and cooked. He also worked at a hospital as an admission clerk. On the other hand, Jerry wanted to become a doctor; however, he failed many times to get an admission from medical schools. Ultimately, he gave up his plan to be a doctor, and he moved to Manhattan after he graduated from his university. He was a lab technician in Manhattan. When he moved to Manhattan, Ben and Jerry lived together for two years. After two years, Jerry went to Chapel Hill, North Carolina because he wanted to live with his girlfriend, Elizabeth who is his wife. He worked as a lab technician at UNC Hospital. However, being a lab technician was unpleasant for him. In addition, Elizabeth ended their relationship, so there was no reason for him to stay in North Carolina anymore, and he went back to New York. (Cohen & Greenfield, 1997)

The Conflict between Parents and Children

Parents usually contend with a problem that occurs when children want to make a decision about their lives. Most parents assume that children are not capable of making the right decisions because these parents believe that they have enough life experience to help them to make better choices for their children.
Conversely, children have a conflict between the loyalty they have for their parents and the loyalty they have to themselves when they need to make a decision. One example of this is Zenkei Shibayama’s article, “Sen-jo and Her Soul Are Separated”. He clearly illustrates the conflict between a father, named Chokan, and a daughter, Sen-jo. She was in love with her cousin, Ochu. Nevertheless, when she was told by her father to marry with another man, she got depressed. Because of having too much love for Ochu, her soul was separated from her body, and she had lived without talking for many years. She had no choice such as disobeying her father and leaving the country with her lover at that time since girls were supposed to obey their fathers’ decisions. On the other hand, nowadays most children want to be independent when they become an adult. Becoming an adult gives them confidence that makes them feel like they know everything. I have an experience about how making a decision can create conflict between parents and children.

After graduating from the university, I found a job through my sister. Even though the job did not meet my expectations, I had no choice. I could not refuse this job because finding a job in Turkey was very challenging at that time. This offer also seemed to be a very good opportunity by my parents. They encouraged me to get this job because they believed that accepting the job was the right decision. When parents and children have the same ideas, everything is fine, and there was no conflict between my parents and me. However, if parents and children do not agree on a subject, the conflict starts from there. For example, three years ago, I wanted to change my job so that I would be happy. I realized that I needed to do what I was interested in. For this reason, I told my parents that I was going to try to become a real estate agent. I did not have enough money to start my own business, but my uncle told me that he would be my sponsor. It was very encouraging for me. He also told me that I could stay with him without paying rent until I established my business and made money. I expected the same thing from my parents. I just wanted them to give me a hand in order to achieve my goal. However, my parents thought that it was not a good idea to leave a job that had a regular salary. In addition, they did not want me to move to another city, Istanbul. I went into a big depression. I did not want to talk to my parents, and I became separated from myself. My attitude was totally changed because I was angry with my parents. Eventually, I made a bold decision and moved to Istanbul. My mother always warned me that I would not be successful since I went against my parents’ decision. After moving to Istanbul, I settled in my uncle’s apartment. In about a week, I began to feel lonely even though I would love to be with my relatives, and started to rethink about my own decision whether it was good or not. With those feelings, I started by looking for a place to rent for my own business. Finally, after a month I found the place with an affordable price. Before I went to the place, accidently I had broken my right knee. When this accident occurred, my parents had evidence to prove that their decision was right; I could not start my own business.

After all I was regretful because of disobeying my parents. I should have listened to them. Most people think that what parents say is right because they have more experience in their lives. Indeed, this is true. For this reason, children should follow parents’ footsteps.

Technology has been developing for thousands of years. Our daily lives and communication styles have been affected by technological innovations, such as the computer, Internet, the cell phone, television, airplane and radio.
They have positive and negative impacts on the way people communicate. Nowadays, there are many ways in which people can get in touch with others, including cell phone, e-mail, text messaging, social network, and instant messaging. Each of them has its own specific features on how to use the language. Whether these new communication tools are useful or not depends on a person who use them. Most people think that a revolution in communication is an advantage whereas some others believe that it is annoying. The appropriate usage of these new technologies can make a deep and lasting impression on people. On the other hand, if they are not used fittingly, people might find themselves in uncomfortable situations. These new technologies have been changing the way I have been communicating with others as well as my daily life. I have been affected by mostly information and communication, transportation and cell phone technologies.

The Internet is one of the most popular technologies in information and communication technologies. It provides many opportunities to communicate with others. There are many different kinds of instant message services, such as Skype, Yahoo, and Msn. In addition to these, there are also many social networks, such as Myspace, Facebook, and Twitter. I have been using most of them. The spoken language and the academic language that I use and the language that I use for instant messaging and other social networks are totally different. Generally, when I talk to my friends on the Internet, I do not use formal language. There are many abbreviations. For instance, instead of using “you”, “why”, and “what”, I only use “u”, “y”, and “wht”. In addition, I can see the person to whom I talk on Skype, Yahoo or MSN messenger. One instance of this is that before I came to the U.S., my mother was not worried for not seeing me for a long time because she knew that she would see me on the Internet. It makes long distances short.

Developments in technology play a very important role in shaping transportation systems that help to form our lives, culture, and countries. There are many vehicles, such as trains, airplanes, buses, and cars that serve people who commute from one place to another. Highway engineers have developed traffic lights, interchanges, and a thousand other design and control systems to keep traffic moving. One example of this is that traffic lights can recognize cars and switch automatically to speed up traffic. For example, before I came to the U.S., I had not known that the traffic lights could automatically regulate the traffic. After my brother picked me up from the airport, we were going home. We stopped at a traffic light, but it suddenly changed. When I asked him why it had changed quickly, he told me that traffic lights could recognize cars, and if there was no car around, it allowed you to pass. I was impressed by this technology. I think if developments in technology continue to grow very quickly, we will not need manpower anymore.

Cell phones are one of the most important innovations that serve the needs of daily life. I remember my first cell phone. It was very huge in comparison to current cell phones. At that time, communication with cell phones was very expensive. I could not use text messages as I wanted. However, after other cell phone services started to serve, I was able to send unlimited text messages. Today, developments in cell phone technology allow us even to access the Internet and to do whatever we want. I can check my emails, shop online, access social networks and I can even do face to face communication through a cell phone. The usage of cell phone has become very popular because of its easy and practical functions.

In short, technological developments bring great benefits to our daily lives. Communication, transportation and cell phone technologies provide an easy life to people. The most important benefit of these technologies is to prevent time spending.

Globalization and Poverty

Poverty has become one of the most important issues in a globalized world. Two important and strong arguments support the negative effects of globalization on poverty.

First reason is that many developing countries do not benefit from the global trade. Some companies such as GAP produce their products in these countries to pay less money for producing. While these companies are becoming richer by this way, these countries cannot improve themselves and they are getting poorer. For example, developing countries have a lot of sweatshops. In Vietnam, people who are working at the sweatshops earn two dollars a day.

Second reason is that the poor countries cannot compete with other developed countries. These poor countries have a lot of resources which are available to the wealthy; however, they cannot afford to gain more resources. For this reason, these countries have to sell all their food as well as products to the developed countries in order to survive.

Although globalization means to approach the countries in the economical field, always rich countries derive profits by trade because of their power of using money.

The Behavior of Americans

I have been living in the U.S. almost for a year. When I arrived at the U.S., I was very surprised by the behavior of Americans because I thought that Americans would be same as much as Turkish people.
However, you should be careful before asking questions to Americans even if it is related to your assignments. For example, when I was studying in D1 level at SAL a year ago, my oral communication class teacher gave me an assignment which was about interviewing other teachers at SAL. In order to complete that assignment, I had to prepare some questions. At that time, I could only speak a little bit English, so I prepared very easy questions, such as ‘’Do you have a car?’’, ‘’Are you married?’’, and ‘’Where do you live in San Jose?’’. When I asked those questions, one of the SAL teachers didn't want to answer some of them, and she told me that I should not ask those kinds of questions because they were very personal. I was very disappointed by that situation because it was the assignment, and I thought that there was nothing wrong with asking those questions. After a while, I realized that Americans often do not like to be asked about their private lives. For this reason, I can make a generalization about Americans that privacy is the main policy for most of them.

If you are coming to the U.S. to start a new job, you should forget about going out on weekdays because you might not find anyone to hang out with. The reason why you might not find anyone is that most Americans do not prefer to go out for fun during the week. Weekends are very important for them. I remember one of my American friends told me that she couldn't wait for Friday. I asked why, and she told me that she would go out with her friends. I smiled to her answer and asked why she didn't go out on weekdays. She told me that she worked on week days. She was extremely happy because it was her free time to go out. However, we Turkish people can go out whenever we want. We usually do not worry about what days we go out.

Time is crucial in the U.S. because it equals money. For this reason, you should manage your time efficiently. In addition, Americans might have very strict rules about time. For example, after work, they usually do not do their jobs because they think that they have their own personal lives. So if you do not follow this rule, you may run into trouble. You should separate the professional life and the personal life.

When I came to the U.S., I was also surprised by another thing, which is that most Americans dress casually at work. Therefore, if you are used to wearing formal clothes at a workplace, the casual clothing habit might seem strange to you at the beginning. For example, my brother is an engineer, and I thought that he should wear a suit. When I asked him why he didn't wear the suit, he told me that his boss didn’t wear a suit either. In addition, you should be prepared to see many kinds of dresses which can be sometimes too strange. In the U.S., no one stares what others are wearing. I think that is a good thing because you do not worry about your appearance as you do in Turkey.

You should think twice about what being friendly is for Americans. When you first arrive at the U.S., you will probably think that Americans are very friendly because you will see many people on the street who smile and say hello. However, this is only formality. You should not take it too seriously. They might seem very friendly, but having a good friendship and becoming close friends are often very difficult. For instance, I met someone, and we exchanged our contacts. However, when I wanted to meet second time with her, she had always excuses. In my opinion, it is really hard to become close with Americans.
