Ein Hoch auf den neuen Puritanismus! Der EU-Rat hat seine Vorgabe für die Jugendschutzrichtlinie rausgegeben und da ist wieder mal alles im Eimer. Sie haben natürlich auf keinen der Experten gehört und sich stattdessen von den Kirchen beraten lassen, jedenfalls sieht das Ergebnis so aus: Kinder sind alles unter 18 (wenn eine 17jährige ihrem 17jährigen Freud ein Nacktfoto schickt, fällt das unter Kinderpornographie), und Grooming soll strafbar werden. Grooming ist das "Heranziehen" von Kindern als mögliche zukünftige Ziele in Onlineforen. Das hat das Zeug, zum neuen Gummiparagraphen zu werden, wenn man mal jemanden einknasten will. Einziger Lichtblick: Netzsperren sind "nur" optional.

Laut Urteil des Bundesgerichtshofs vom 27.10.2011 ist die Praxis der GEMA, bei Weihnachtsmärkten nicht nur für die beschallte Fläche sondern für den kompletten Markt Nutzungsgebühren zu verlangen, zulässig. Die Piratenpartei schlägt als Konsequenz daraus vor, vollständig auf GEMA-pflichtige Musik zu verzichten.

»Seit Jahren macht sich die GEMA vor allem in der Vorweihnachtszeit immer unbeliebter. Mal werden Martinszüge von Kindergärten auf illegale Kopien von Notenblättern kontrolliert, dann wieder werden für die musikalische Gestaltung von Weihnachtsmärkten Phantasiepreise verlangt«, erklärt Christian Hufgard, Mitglied der AG Urheberrecht. »Dabei ist der Ausweg ganz einfach: Es gibt mehr als genug GEMA-freie Musik, die vollkommen legal genutzt werden kann – teilweise sogar vollkommen kostenfrei.«

Wer auf Nummer sicher gehen möchte, kann bei Anbietern wie jamendo.com Musikrechte erwerben, die garantiert GEMA-frei sind. Bei einer Fläche von 4.000 Quadratmetern werden dabei insgesamt 97 Euro fällig – die GEMA verlangt dagegen 521,40 Euro pro Tag.

»Der Verzicht auf die üblichen Weihnachtsklassiker sollte dabei nicht schwer ins Gewicht fallen«, so Hufgard weiter. »Sie werden auch im Radio hoch- und runtergedudelt, ein wenig Abwechslung schadet der Stimmung auf den Weihnachtsmärkten sicherlich nicht.«

Gentechnik: Blut & Reis

Man kann zwar kein Blut aus Steinen, aber es scheint, dass man wohl Blut aus Reis pressen kann. Nun, zumindest ein wichtiges Blutprotein, genannt Albumin oder HSA1. Albumin ist ein wertvolles Protein, das bei Blutverlust, schweren Verbrennungen, Operationen und vielem mehr eingesetzt wird und es werden jährlich mehrere hundert Tonnen davon in Krankenhäusern benötigt. Weltweit wird an diversen Gewinnungsmöglichkeiten für das Problem geforscht, oft mit Hilfe der Gentechnik. Dass Albumin knapp wird, ist keine Seltenheit!

Die Methode zur Gewinnung aus Reis wurde von Wissenschaftlern an der Wuhan Universität in China und Kollegen vom National Research Council in Canada und dem Zentrum für Functional Genomics der University Albany, New York entwickelt. Es gelang ihnen gentechnisch modifiziertem Reis zu schaffen, der HSA1 produziert. Danach entwickelten sie eine Methode, das Protein vom Reis zu trennen und dabei 2,75g pro Kilo zu gewinnen – was zur Zeit die beste Quote ist, die man geschafft hat. Und kostengünstig genug für die Massenproduktion.

Das Protein muss natürlich noch ausgiebig getestet werden, bevor es “auf den Markt kommt”. Erste Tierversuche waren vielversprechend und ein Unterschied zu vom Menschen stammenden Protein konnte nicht festgestellt werden.

Bedeutsam ist, diese Reissorte verwischt die Grenzen zwischen medizinischer Anwendung und landwirtschaftlicher Anwendung besonders stark. Reis ist eines der wichtigsten Nahrungsmittel der Welt und eine neue Sorte davon ist nun auch medizinisch interessant. Können wir uns zurücklehnen, die landwirtschaftliche Anwendung von Gentechnik verteufeln und die medizinische Umarmen? Ich denke nicht. Die Grenzen sind fließend.

Wir müssen ein Umfeld schaffen, in dem Forschung möglich ist, ein Umfeld, in dem gentechnisch modifizierte Produkte kein Teufelswerk, sondern ein Produkt wie jedes andere sind. Ein Produkt, das rational auf Sicherheit und Verträglichkeit getestet wird, ein Produkt, dass bei Erfolg genutzt wird. Gentechnik ist ein wundervolles Werkzeug, dass unser Leben verbessern kann. Vorsicht hat ihren Sinn und Platz. Irrationale Angst nicht.

Android 4.0 AOSP running on the PandaBoard could very well be the first Android build compiled entirely from the recently released Ice Cream Sandwich source code. The talented developer shows off the fruits of his labor and in the video you can see that when outputted to a higher res display, Android 4.0 transforms into a Honeycomb-esque tablet UI. Pretty nice.

So what is exactly is the PandaBoard? Well, think of it as the internals of a device thrown together on a single-board (no shell or casing) that’s offered to developers looking to tinker around with Linux or Android for the low subsidized price of $174. The PandaBoard features pretty much everything you would expect from a high-end Android device — it’s just not as pretty. The PandaBoard is equipped with a 1GHz TI OMAP 4430 processor, 1GB of RAM, SD card slot, wired/wireless ethernet, DVI and HDMI output and don’t forget the 3.5 audio connection.

Honestly, I can’t say I’ve ever heard of the PandaBoard until now but it’s got my mind running. Let’s pretend Google get’s on the ball and updates Google TV to Ice Cream Sandwich, I could very well be looking at my next Google TV step top box. Woot!

"Take a look at this bug," said Victor's boss. "It'll be a good way for you to learn our code base."

Always a fan of the hands-on approach, Victor agreed. He pulled up the code and took a look, expecting to see a nicely bulletproof application. The system was a hosted service that allowed customers to store very sensitive technical data. The interview process had stressed exactly how sensitive the data was. "Security is job one," the boss said. "We spent a great deal of time and effort to make sure this was as secure as we could make it, and I need to make sure that you'll comply with secure coding practices."

What Victor saw in the code base was slightly different than what was on the label. The code was bad. Not "oh, they have inconsistent standards" bad, but "somebody copied and pasted classic ASP code into .NET and then mucked with it until it worked" bad. There had been a token attempt to make it look sort of like object-oriented code, and that token attempt simply made the code less readable and more difficult to maintain.

As Victor read through the code, he paid close attention to how it implemented security. While he hunted for the bug, he found many security flaws. Each time he found one, he stopped by to talk to his boss.

"Hey, I noticed that none of the browser fields are sanitized. Someone could perform an XSS attack on us."

"Is that the cause of the bug?"

"Well, no," Victor said, "but I thought-"

"You're not here to take a field trip through our code," the boss said. "Fix the bug."

An almost identical conversation happened when Victor spotted a query like this: String strQry = "SELECT a, b, c FROM data WHERE x = '" + pstrOne + "' AND y = '" + pstrTwo + "'".

That was bad, especially since all of the super-secret client data lived in the same database. Nothing was segmented and everyone at the company thought "VPD" was a special kind of veneral disease, which meant trivial SQL injections could easily slup other customer's data. Of course, a malicious user didn't need to work that hard.

The passwords were stored in ~/passwords.txt in plaintext key/value pairs: 5,joebob@foomail.it,hunter2. Any malicious user could simply grab the plaintext file and log in as anyone they liked. But they didn't even need to work that hard.

The only screen that contained any authentication logic was the login screen. It didn't write any session information or any cookies out. It simply checked the supplied credentials against the passwords.txt file, and if they were correct, it redirected the client to the home page with a URL parameter: UserID=5. One could bypass authentication entirely by bookmarking the home page, and a malicious user could impersonate anyone else simply by changing the URL parameter.

Armed with these fatal flaws, Victor approached his boss one last time.

His boss sighed, sadly. "Victor, I really don't think you understand the security needs of this application. You're focusing on the wrong things. We're going to have to let you go."

Well, it’s been an amazing journey, and it makes me sad to end it because this episode really shows how amazing these characters would be together were they to journey farther. Josmael grew up, Nyree opened up, Cairn and Tallis find redemption. The acting and SFX in this is I think the best in the series, Doug Jones actually manages to humanize Saarebas in a wonderful way. I don’t want to spoil anything for those who haven’t watched, but I look forward to hearing your overall thoughts about the series in the comments below, especially those who experienced the DLC piece with Tallis as well, how those pieces work together.
