I posted this on my facebook page a couple of days ago, and wanted to share it here as well.

Tips for keeping that long hair beautiful and healthy!

If you have long hair, (past your shoulders), then avoid washing your hair every day. When you do wash it, concentrate on just washing your scalp, and as you rinse your hair, the rest of your hair will be cleansed, but necessary hair oils won't be as stripped as usual. These keep your ends shiny and healthy. When you condition, focus on the bottom half of your hair and keep it in as long as you can.

Winter Hair - The Most Practical, Pretty and Healthy Styles During the Colder Months

With Christmas gone it can sometimes be easy to forget that it’s still technically winter. In fact, January is usually one of the coldest months of the year and the wintry weather can often have a detrimental effect on your little girl’s hair. According to a feature in MedicineNet, top celebrity stylist Nick Chavez blames the harsh conditions of winter on the damage done to our hair and says that people often don’t take enough precautions to protect it.

Limiting their use of heat appliances, encouraging an intense conditioning regime on a weekly basis and NEVER EVER allowing them to leave the house with wet hair during winter will go some way to reducing your child's hair breakage and keeping their locks hydrated and looking luscious this year. But even the style she chooses to wear can sometimes benefit its general health and appearance during the colder months. Here are some styles that are quick, convenient and practical for winter – they may just help to win the battle against the elements too.

Topknot/Bun

The topknot or messy bun has been one of the season’s hottest trends. There are no rules to achieving this low maintenance look – simply flip the head upside down and gather the hair together, twist and secure. Or if she likes her ‘messy’ look a little neater than use a bun doughnut for extra support.

The beauty of this style is that it can fit perfectly under a hood or hat while still keeping volume in the hair. Sometimes a hat can make loose hair appear hair flat and lifeless because the majority of the body’s heat escapes through the head. So containing within a hat has the same sort of effect on the hair as going into a sauna –wilting, limp and dull. A topknot will counteract this, particularly if it is backcombed or styled with volumising products before putting the hat on. Then if she wants to wear her hair down later on in the day she can simply shake the topknot out.

Side Ponytail

Because hair can often go static or frizzy in cold, dry air a low, side ponytail is the ideal way to keep it sleek and under control. Create a defined, straight parting (either middle or side) then use wax to small amount of wax to smooth the hair down. Gather the hair into a side pony tail at the nape of the neck and secure. To make this style even more striking then use an outer section of hair and wrap it around the hair band then secure with a hair pin. You can even help her to tousle, curl or straighten the ponytail depending on her desired look.

Loose waves

For girls who like to wear their hair poke straight winter can be a challenging season. No matter how long she spends with the straightening irons in a morning, any exposure to snow, fog, rain or general moisture in the air can cause the hair follicles to expand – reverting back to their original configuration and frizzing in the process. Sometimes it’s best to surrender and opt for a look that’s casual and wavy where the odd flick won’t look out of place. Wrap hair loosely around curling tongs or simply run some mousse through damp hair and scrunch/finger style. Long, wavy locks can look elegant under a baggy beanie whereas shorter curls can look chic and cute under a beret.

Braid

The braid is a timeless classic in the world of hairstyles. This super versatile look can be suitable for any occasion – from a regular school day to a glitzy prom. Not bad for a hairstyle that requires minimal styling and barely any time whatsoever. During winter, experts suggest that using heat styling appliances such as straighteners and curlers should be kept to a minimum. Even washing the hair in hot water isn’t recommended due to the dramatic change in temperatures that can dry hair out and lead to breakage – ultimately resulting in hair loss in men as well as women. The braid is a simple yet feminine look that requires barely any styling or preparation such as washing or blow drying. It can be worn high, tight and neat (think warrior princess style) or low, loose and casual. The possibilities are endless.

Accessories

If all else fails then treat your little girl to some quirky accessories that can glam up even the most bothersome of barnets in the dull weather. A short pixie cut can be instantly transformed into retro, chic doo with a chunky headband, and a piece of hair jewellery in a side bun can create an illusion of grandeur. Bold, statement bows are bang on trend while a crystal hair comb or bejewelled bobby pins can make your little angel shine!

Little Girl's Hairstyles: How to do big soft loose curls hairstyle Video Tutorial

Here's a hairdo that you can do on your girls and on yourself! My girls and I have such different hair types that what works for my hair usually doesn't work for them, and vice versa. This hairdo, however, we all wear, and the only change I have to make is the size of the curling iron, to adjust for the amount of curl in the hair.
So, for hair like mine, that's wavy/curly on its own, and to achieve a smoothing effect with the large curl, I use the larger barrel iron.
For straighter smoother hair, I want to use a smaller curling iron, to add in tighter loops, as it will relax on its own later. Remember, if your hair/daughter's hair is hard to curl, you need a smaller iron, AND one that gets very hot (use thermal protectant!) The straighter a strand of hair is, the LESS resistant it is to heat as well! Curly hair has more coarseness, and is usually a thicker strand of hair, so it can hold up better to the heat (which is good--as you need more heat to make curly hair unbend!).

Last tip: if your hair is like mine, or curlier, and grabs the curl and springs up too much, just grab the end of the hair after curling it, and while it's still hot, pull it down and hold it for a few seconds. It will help relax it a bit more.

I was putting in bobby pins this morning while doing my oldest daughter's hair. They slipped right out--so I thought of this handy trick and wanted to share with you!

For those whose daughters (or themselves) that have that beautiful, shiny, and slippery hair: Here's how to slip-proof your hairdo when using a bobby pin. Spray dry shampoo (or hairspray) on a bobby pin before sliding it into place. The spray will give the pin texture and some extra grip, which keeps it from sliding out.

Hopefully these tips will help make the management of all that hair happier! (Me-I just cut mine all off--again. Less hair--less to do!)

WASH: Thick or coarse hair (thick strands) needs extra (EXTRA) moisture, particularly more so if you have curly locks, to remain smooth and shiny. You want to look for thick shampoos with hydrating ingredients. The shampoos will look opaque, almost pearly, and similar in appearance to conditioners. L'Oreal Paris EverCreme Cleansing Conditioner is a great product that won't strip hair of moisture while cleaning it (yes-it's a shampoo!). I also love anything Biolage--they are designed to keep hair hydrated and happy. As for conditioners, the thicker your hair, the thicker the conditioner should be. Biolage's Exquisite Oil Conditioner with Moringa Oil is fabulous! Always leave your conditioner on your hair for as long as possible while showering, or at least 3 minutes, to allow the hair to absorb the conditioning qualities.

STYLE: Thick hair can support style well, and doesn't need a lot of products like mousse, gel, hairspray. What you want are products that smooth, add shine, and tame bulkiness. Think creams, oils, balms. Garnier's Sleeck and Shine Moroccan Sleek Oil Treatment works great whether you are doing curly or straight hairdo's. All in moderation though, too much of these will make your hair look and feel greasy. Focus on the ends when applying these products.

CUT: Great layers! Thick hair tends to give you 'triangle head', as my stylist calls it. The strands bulk up the farther away from your head they grow. Triangular layers (upside down triangle) will balance out this geometric hairdo.

**Also--if you have curly hair--don't let your stylist get nutso with a razor blade to thin out your hair. Thin hair with thinning shears--razors tend to make curly hair frizz more. Just because they know how to cut hair doesn't always mean they know how to cut YOUR style of hair.

You have Normal Hair, which means not too curly or thick, and not too straight or thin. So here's some great tips for taking care of your normal type of hair.

WASH: All hair gets drier the older we get, so what does this mean? You don't need to wash it as often if you are past your 20's. A good shampoo with hydrators such as argan oil adds shine without buildup (what weighs down the hair's natural volume). When rinsing out conditioner, stop before the ends feel 'squeaky clean'. A little left behind (ends only!) creates a natural frizz preventer while moisturizing the ends. A great leave in conditioner for this type of hair that I love is Rusk Smoother Leave In. I use this on my girl's hair a lot, since they have this type of hair, and it's harder for them to get the right amount of conditioner in and rinsed out.

STYLE: For your hair, fighting a frizz is the most common complaint. If you live in a humid climate, the humidity gets sucked into your hair strands, making the hair cuticle expand and frizz. So, if your hair is well hydrated, it draws less water from the air, and there is less frizz. Bring on the moisture! Skip gels or sprays that have dehydrating alcohol as an ingredient. Try a smoothing serum (I love Biolage's Exquisite Hair oil) or styling cream instead, depending on your hair curvature. Curls need something a little richer and more hydrating than a straighter lock.

Your BEST CUT: It's always good to go to a hair appointment with hair as 'natural' as possible (air dried is best), so your hairdresser can see the real wave in your hair. It's always a good idea to have a cut that fits your natural hair wave, and then alter it after (straightening or curling it with irons). This will really benefit you and you will like your cut much more!

If you have Fine Hair: Score 3-6

WASH: Use a NON CREAMY shampoo, one that looks more transparent. These are less likely to weigh down the hair, since fine hair has less volume and texture to give it bounce. Try shampoos with nutrients, to stimulate hair circulation and promote growth, since fine hair also doesn't replace itself at the same rate.

STYLE: You want volume! Use a mousse on hair, then blowdry, using a round brush to build volume (if hair is straight), or a diffuser to prevent frizz if you have curls. Heat activated hair products are also recommended, since they react with the heat to give you more volume, particularly at roots. You want to bulk up your strands so they appear thicker--but don't overdo it with heavy creams or gels--this will weigh it down. Mousse is great because it's light, but gives structure.

Your BEST CUT: Fine hair tends to look flat and limp if it gets long, so keep it shoulder length or shorter. Don't overlayer the cut, that will also tend to make hair look thinner.

Take this hair type quiz to find out!

1. What is your hair diameter? Score yourself from 1-5. Hold a strand of hair between your fingers and roll it. If you can't feel the strand at all--give yourself a score of 1. If it feels like a piece of thread, give yourself a 5.

2. What is your hair density? 1 is sparse and 5 is thick. If you can see your scalp between hairs and base of your ponytail is smaller than a dime, you are a 1. If your scalp is not visible, but you shed a lot, and your hair doesn't get thinner, you are a 5.

3. What is your hair curvature? Comparing your hair with others', give a score of 1-5, 1 being very straight (straighter than most), and 5 being very curly (curlier than most). If your hair is wavy when you airdry, you are a 3.

If your daughter is venturing into doing her own hair (a most wonderful time!), then this is for you!

One of the best things you can 'help' her with is parting her hair for her, and showing her how to do it. A neat part is what makes all the difference--especially for these 'starter' hairdos the little gals first attempt. Ours are usually ponytails of some sort, whether one or two, on the side or back. Having a neat part can help make her hair look better, whether just up top, or a full part in the back. It's a hard first step, and can make the rest of their hairdoing proceed happier. Then she has more confidence in her skills, and will keep trying and learning! This is a great thing-and seeing her smile when you compliment her hairstyle will make her look (and feel!) amazing!

How to do an At Home Deep Condition for your hair

We all can use this wonderful hair care tip, since winter temperatures and furnace dry air do a number on our hair.
First get a good thick conditioner ( I love Biolage conditioning balm or Redken All Soft).
After you've washed the hair, coat it in a nice thick layer of conditioner. Pile the hair on top of the head, and put on a disposable shower cap.
Use your blow dryer on a low setting and blow dry the hair for about 5-7 min. Let hair cool, and rinse.
The heat opens the hair shaft, allowing the conditioner to seep in deeply and do its work. Try doing this once a week or more often if your hair needs some serious TLC.
So easy, but will work magic on dry stressed hair!

Monday Hair Tip!

If you have dry straight hair and want it to curl, use some hair product first when wet. I recommend a thin hair gel that will smooth through the hair but not weigh it down. Next use a thermal heat protectant, and then curl with a HOT curling iron or wand. Ceramic or tourmaline work very well. Remember, the smaller the iron, the tighter the curl, so try a few sizes to see what works best. Use a shine serum on the ends.

Cold weather tip!

If you live in a dry windy cold environment, like us in Utah-here's a good tip to keep ends from getting brittle. Try out a leave in conditioner--put it in ends of hair after washing (and regular conditioning) and towel drying. Comb it through and style as usual. You can adjust how much you use according to your hair type and thickness, but this will do wonders for preventing split ends.

If your daughter has super fine, slick hair that is hard to braid, here's a tip to make it less slick and easier to work with! Spray her hair with some hairspray before styling, with up and down motions (aerosol types work great--and ones with a non-sticky feel!!), and comb through--then braid. It gives the hair some texture, and hold, and makes a world of difference! Do this before curling, waving, or using any other heated appliance as well.

How to do Crazy Hair Day at School

Minnie Mouse Hairdo

We love crazy hair day (although I am thinking next year the school should NOT do it the day before Halloween......too much crazy hair in one week!)

Here's what we did for the girls today:

We were going to go with the old pipe-cleaner-in-the-hair hairdo, but alas, come 9:30 at night, and the pipe cleaners were nowhere to be found...so I dug out my floral wire that I use to make hair bows with, and used that instead! I loved it! It hid better in the hair, and was a little easier to work with, so I could make the braids a little thinner. It's not as stiff, but I think it worked superbly for what we did. I don't LOVE the spray on hair color, so we save that just for Halloween (my shower curtain is still stained from last year's spray off in the shower), and just went with a little something easier this time around. :) I just tucked the wire in the elastic at the base of the braid, braided it down, and looped it around the top, using bobby pins to secure it to her head. Two minutes!
I don't know if Disneyland had an influence on this or not, but it sure was fun (and quick!)
