How to do little girl's hairstyles: How to hold in curl on super straight hair?

I was recently asked on my Facebook page what to use to hold in curl on hair that is super straight. I have been struggling with this a bit with my own gals' hair, particularly my daughter with waist-length hair. Both of my older girls have fairly straight hair, and unless I use my teeny tiny curling iron, their hair would be flat flat in just a few hours. SUPER frustrating, right!? Especially when you spend a good 20 minutes curling it!

SO-I've been on the hunt! My sister in law recommended a curling iron to me, and after going to Sally's (where said iron was purchased), I found another iron that I have been very happy with as well. I think either one are great purchases and will do the job! The first is Argan Heat, the second is the Jilbere Nano Silver. We got the Argan, since it gets a bit hotter, and we figured, the hotter the better! (They are the same price--I ended up paying, with tax, about $35.)

Here's what we got:

It's called Argan Heat, and it gets up to 400 degrees. I could list all the ins and outs of it, but basically it's not supposed to fry your hair ends (as long as you use a good thermal styling protectant) at the high temps. AND, it works like a charm!

And, check it out! This was taken AFTER a day at school! Her curls took less than 5 minutes. (I promise, no touch ups either!)

And hairstyle no. 2 that day, again, AFTER school!

I sprayed in thermal heat protectant and a light coat of hairspray before curling, and that was it! (I have about 5 min a head in the mornings before school. I RARELY whip out the curling iron.)

So go test them out ladies! Tell me if anyone loves it as much as me!

I have been asked how to do this braid for a very long time, so (new year's resolution), I decided to get on the ball and learn it! I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was! Hurray for easy! Here's one more haircare tip for this cold weather season!!

Cold weather dries out your hair and can lead to STATIC! To avoid this, try sleeping on a silk or sateen pillowcase. This will help your hair glide gently over its surface, helping prevent hair damage and friction, and thus, static. Your hair will also be more shiny and silky in the morning than if you were to use a regular pillowcase. My gals have some and they love theirs! You can also make them very inexpensively and easily if you are so inclined. :) (Me-I stick to the hairdoing).

How to do little girls' hairstyles: Cold Weather Haircare

The winter can make the hair dull and static and dry! To avoid or deal with these two problems you need to know how to care for your hair! Here are some tips to help your locks looking healthy and happy this winter season.

Make sure you use moisturizing hair products and plenty of conditioner. Conditioner will help keep your hair's elasticity and movement. It will help maintain the hair cuticle and keep it from cracking or splitting, and therefore, less split ends! Healthy hair is the easiest to work with, it is easier to style, maintain and it also has better movement and body.

Style your hair using volumizing mousse if it's feeling flat. Adding some volume will always boost good a good 'hair down' hairdo.
Always dry out your hair completely before you go outside. Using the cold setting on your dryer will help with static and dry hair, as it helps seal the cuticle of the hair. Use a thermal protection spray if you do use heat first, and then do a cold shot after to help lock in the hairdo.
Do not put on your hair accessories right after you blow dried, as the hair is still warm, and as it cools, it will take the shape of your hair accessory. You know those lovely ponytail dents?

Happy Holidays!!

I am posting later than I intended, forgive me, but my computer and/or video editing program was NOT cooperating. It too, I fear, was overwhelmed, and overscheduled, this holiday season. SO, better late than never, at least it's before the big day, right! And hey, there's always those New Year's Eve parties to attend, and someone will need a fresh and fancy hairdo for those, right!?
This hairstyle, like many that I have on this hairdo blog, are a product of me attempting a hairstyle that I've seen somewhere, and not achieving exactly that, but coming up with something else entirely. We are crazy about rosettes lately! This is a tad bit different style of rosette, and I just love it. It ends up looking pretty fancy, and I've used this bun in a half ponytail up on top of the head and then left the bottom half of the hair down. Try sticking in some cute flowers!

A cute easy and FAST hairdo for those fellow moms who have more than one girl's head of hair to do before school! My little blondie started Kindergarten this year, and holy smokes do I have to be on top of it to get them both ready in a short amount of time. I've opted for the "one fancy, one quick" hairdoing, and then we rotate. My girls could care less which one they are in the morning, it's more to appease mom!

These are pics from a previous post. As you can see in this video, the placement doesn't always turn out perfect! I apologize--it's just indicative of my life right now: I have X amount of minutes to accomplish something (ex: the hair video) and I just have to do the best I can in those allotted minutes and take what I can get! My sweet baby really dictates my schedule, as you can hear her voicing her commands! Enjoy!

The main difference between my video and the above pics are the placements of the ponytails. You can see I didn't pull all of her hair in the front into ponytails, but just the hair from where it matches up with her eye and over. DO THIS, if you want your rosettes closer together. Do what I show on the video if you want all the front hair pulled up. Both are good--just depends on what look you prefer.

How to do FUN hair color on your girls! Video Tutorial

So my fabulous hair stylist friend, who's always doing something fun and exciting, put some super darling colors in her girls' hair this summer. When my gals saw it, they immediately turned to me with those puppy dog eyes that pled "PUHLEEZE Mommy!?" We had to give it a try! Because it's semi permanent, I felt ok about putting it in their healthy and pristine never-been-damaged hair (well, I felt less guilty). Take a peek!

It's easier with long hair (in fact long hair is a must for this-either your own or some of those clip in extensions). Either way-hope you enjoy it! Well, I'm sure some of you have just given up hope that I would EVER return to the world of hairdo-blogging. I wondered at times as well! BUT, I am here, and on the road to normal life! My baby is sleeping through the night, and the fog has lifted, and I even am exercising (okay, only 3 times so far in two months), and life is GOOD!

This video was done actually before I had my little one, but the editing and getting it off my camera business seems to take more time than the actual hairdo. I found this hairstyle in a book one day, and it looked intriguing, so here we go. It's the getting the hands in the right places on this one that's the challenge, but it really is pretty and different! I'd love to hear what you think when you try it!

Little Girl's Hairstyles: Easy Twist Around Braided Ponytail 10-15 min

Well, here's a funny thing: I could have sworn I'd already posted this hairdo! Am I crazy? Does this look familiar to any of you? I searched and searched, and could not find it anywhere! If anyone of you find it elsewhere, please let me know! If not, then here's a new one for you! I was going to use this as one of my 'Blast from the Past' hairdos, since I happened upon the pictures and was reminded of how much I liked this hairstyle, but ........a new hairstyle is great too!

Twist Around Braided Ponytail

This side view shows off the back ponytail nicely. I started this cute little hairdo with a french braid in front, drawing in hair, just to the ears. I then finished the braid all the way down to the ends. I then gathered the rest of the hair (nice and damp of course) up to where I finished the actual french braid, and put it, along with the braid, into a high ponytail.

I then just twisted the remainder of her loose hair and wrapped it around the braid, and secured the ends with an elastic. Keeping the hair damp, especially in the twist, will help keep the hairdo in longer and looking more finished. Spray both sides of the finished braid well with hairspray, and she's done!

Those cute bows and smiles finish it off nicely!

Little Girl's Hairstyles: Video Tutorial: How to use soft foam (or sponge) curlers

Hi ladies! I am setting this post up pre-baby, so hopefully it will come through on time, and won't have any problems.
Using the soft or sponge/foam curlers in my girls' hair is pretty routine in our household, especially when we know we'll be having some major hair-doing event in the morning, and I know I"ll be trying to prepare 3 heads of hair. We use these for church hairdos and lately, for my oldest's dance competition hairdo's. Here's a few examples of the cute bouncy curls you get from using these great soft curlers:

A curly bun with all the curls pulled up on top in a high ponytail: (I'll be posting how to do this hairstyle later on).

These are great to use for those Easter Sunday hairdos!! Try them out with the off centered braids and twists I've been sharing lately. Just roll her hair the night before, then do the braids/twists then next morning. ***Just remember***don't roll WET hair, unless you plan on spending a fair amount of time blow drying the curlers while in her hair. I always blow dry their hair after their baths, then put in the soft curlers. Adding a little gel before blow drying also helps add shine and helps control frizz.

Little Girl's Hairstyles: Off centered braid and twist hairstyle no. 3: 15-20 min

My last example (for a while) of the off-centered braid and twist. This is the basic beginning that I shared in my first post in this series. (Check out my last two posts).

I begin with the french braid, and the twist on the side, and join them in the back. I used my waver again on the rest of her hair. You could also do some flat iron waves, or corkscrew curls, or just flat iron it straight as well.

This is another cute one for Easter, and gives you great hair to show off some of those great big flowers or bows that match their dresses.

This is it friends......for on Wednesday (at the latest) I'm going in to have my baby girl! I have some posts with videos planned however, until I can get back to doing hair and hopefully being normal again! Have a great week and wish me luck!

Little Girl's Hairstyles: Off-centered french twist braids 15-20 min

Got any big plans for spring break? Ours is coming next week, and it will just be baby land in our house. My girls are so excited to be little mommy's helpers and take care of their baby sister they are about ready to burst. It is so thrilling for me to see their anticipation. :)

Here's the second hairstyle I promised using the off-centered braid and twist idea that I shared in my last post.

Off centered french twist braids:

I split the larger parted off section into two equal parts, and instead of doing a french braid, I did a french twist braid (see my video on how to do french twist braids). I crossed the top twist over the second when bringing it back to the center (or off center) of her head. I did the same regular twist on the smaller side, like in the previous post, and joined them together.

I used my waver to finish off the rest of her hair and added a big bow. She's all ready for preschool!

Little Girl's Hairstyles: Off centered braid and twist hairstyle 15-20 min

Happy April! This is my favorite time of year! All my bulbs are coming up (along with the weeds), but I just love watching everything start to blossom and turn green again, rather than the drab brown patches I've been looking at all winter! So in preparation for the Easter holiday, here's a little 'series' I'll be sharing in the next few posts:

This is a 'progressive' hairstyle, I like to call it, because I use the first part of this hairstyle, with the off-centered french braid and twist in a few different hairstyles--which I build on, to give you more ideas and variety. This hairstyle has a french braid, a twist, a twist braid, a stacked pony, and a regular braided ponytail-but it's still easy and basic! Like most of my 'basic' components, I have videos on how to do them. Feel free to check those out for the french braid and the twist braid if needs be in the Video Tutorial section.

To begin, I started with, of course!, DAMP hair. This is pretty much the case with about 99% of my hairdos. I give her a center part, back to the ear line.

I then part down to her ear on the larger side. This is where I will be doing the french braid.

I french braid back to the part, and then continue with a regular braid, just far enough to reach a little past the center of her head in the back.

Then on to the smaller parted section.

Comb neatly and begin twisting towards the center of her head.

Join them off-centered like so, with an elastic.This is my stopping point for the other hairstyles I'll be showing you soon.

From this point, I do a twist braid down to the ends of her hair

And then secure the rest of the hair into a low ponytail.

I pull the ponytail over the top of the joined braid and twist,

and make a stacked pony and wrap the twist braid around base of the ponytail. I use a clear elastic to secure the twist braid in place. I then braid the ponytail down to the ends. If your daughter's hair isn't long enough to do the twist braid, just wrap it around the ponytail base.

You'll need to plan a few extra minutes if you want to do all the twists and braids, but it's a fun one to do! I really like the off-centered look of the ponytail when she's all done.
