How far Dharma Life Foundation has been successful in its efforts?

Dharma Life has been successful in increasing the income of over 80 lakhs villagers. It has significantly improved the living standards and conditions of rural people. Out of 13,000 businesses that have been created in the 12 states of India, approximately 9,000 businesses are handled by rural women.

In an effort to facilitate the rural children with proper education the NGO has collaborated with the village schools and local governments. The children are also educated about solar lantern and clean energy solutions.

The most unique thing about Dharma Life is that it is working towards the establishment of a distribution chain so that products can be transferred from rural to the urban market. This will eventually leave the villagers with higher earnings.

The foundation is also working towards the elimination of indoor air pollution which is generated due to the use of solid fuel and inefficient cook-stoves. It results in vision, pulmonary and respiratory problems, especially in women. In addition, Dharma Life caters to the undernutrition problem which is commonly prevalent among the village children.

Education and Career - Doval is a graduate in economics from the prestigious Hindu College of Delhi University. Overview- The son of India’s National Security Advisor- Ajit Doval and the member of BJP’s State executive committee, Shaurya Doval’s ‘Bemisal Garhwal’ campaign was initiated by him at Pauri Garhwal’s Dhanau Malla village by planting a tree. The very first act conducted under the Bemisal Garhwal campaign hence showcases the Junior Doval’s aims and visions to create ‘Buland Uttarakhand’. You will be amazed to know that a total of 30 different species were included in the plantation drive.

Welfare of Van Panchayat in the region

Shaurya Doval said that he wants to work towards the welfare of van panchayat of this region. He told the villagers that under ‘Bemisaal Garhwal’ programme, comprehensive improvement in the living standard of the people of the village would be targeted. He exhorted the villagers to save forests and prevent forest fires.

Helping the people in dealing with various challenges

A Kisan Sabha was also organized in the village during the day. Detailed discussions were held on the problems, challenges and solutions of the farmers. Both milk producers and mushroom farmers were also present on the occasion. Addressing the farmers, Shaurya said that it is the need of the hour to empower the farmers. Dairy farmers have to work on all aspects, including quality of milk, production of milk and its marketing.

Several activities, including career counseling for students, mobile clinics for villagers and women in specific, skill development for farmers, mushroom farming and idea generation for milk producers have already begun under the campaign.” He added that several mobile clinics had been added in various blocks, including Pokhari, Kaljikhal, Jakholi, Dasholi and Pauri.

Early Life and Family

Ghiri is a village located amidst the captivating landscape of Pauri Garhwal (Uttarakhand). Shaurya Doval was born into a brahmin family that dwelt here over several generations, whose ancestors served as Prime Minister to the former Garhwal Kingdom. His father, Shri. Ajit Doval, is a former Indian intelligence and law enforcement officer and is currently the National Security Advisor to the Prime Minister. His mother, Smt. Aruni Doval, from the Dasmana family in Bagyali, Pauri Garhwal, was a teacher prior to retirement. Shaurya’s wife, Divya, is an oncologist. She too is from Garhwal and belongs to the Nautiyal family of Tehri.

Education

Shaurya began his education in the disciplined environment of the Army Public School. For higher studies he attended the prestigious Hindu College of Delhi University from where he graduated with top honours in Economics. Shaurya led an active life in college, excelling in sports, debating and other cultural activities.

Professional Career

His outstanding capability and performance helped him secure a job with Arthur Andersen when he was just 20 years old. Offered the opportunity of becoming a Chartered Accountant by the company, Shaurya pursued his studies while working. He became a Chartered Account when he was only 23 years. In recognition of his capabilities and potential Shaurya gained admission in United Kingdom’s London School of Business and USA’s Chicago University, premier institutions that are part of the top 10 business schools of the world. After completing his MBA, Shaurya worked at senior positions in leading global financial services firms like Morgan Stanley, G.E. Capital, etc. where he got the opportunity to demonstrate his financial and business acumen.

Achievements

Shaurya kept climbing the corporate ladder on the strength of his capabilities, gaining respect and accolades as a financial consultant. In 2009 he returned and founded the India centric Think Tank ‘India Foundation’ through which he has worked tirelessly to navigate the changing course of India’s future.

Shaurya has been closely involved with the power sector and has been a consultant to many companies in this industry. The country’s prestigious Institute of Economic Studies acknowledged his contributions to the Power Sector by conferring him with the ‘Udyog Ratan’ award in 2012.

India Foundation

In year 2009 Shaurya established the India Foundation together with Shri Ram Madhavji. The underlying principle behind creating this Think Tank was to look at India from an ‘India Perspective’. So that India and the Indian perspective would remain at the forefront when discussing and developing policy for the country. The financial tumult on the global scene required introspection and reflection on the breakdown of financial and business standards. The nation was looking at a more India-centric approach. Dharma Life Foundation

Dharma Life Foundation in a non-profit organisation that works with rural households to improve their quality of life through entrepreneurship at the village level. Shaurya and his team at Dharma Life focus their attention on critical issues that India faces like health, sanitation, education and unemployment. The foundation addresses these challenges at the rural level by supporting entrepreneurship, building business skills, and identifying opportunities that align with market requirements.

In addition to health, education and unemployment, Dharma Life Foundation also works in areas like sanitation, digital education, smart villages/panchayats concentrating mainly on the youth and women of rural India. Helping them to set up their own enterprises, teaching them skills to successfully run and grow their businesses.

Today Dharma Life Foundation is brightening the future of rural youth and women in 12 states of the country. The foundation has created one entrepreneur for every three villages in these states, with 13,000 businesses having been created. Of which 9,000 are run by women alone. Cumulatively, their efforts have positively impacted 80 lakh persons in total till date.

Shaurya has been associated with Dharma Life Foundation right from the stage of concept, through creation. Aspirations For The Indian Economy!

That India has tremendous economic potential is without doubt. Till the early 17th Century, India’s contribution to the global GDP was as large as that of China, and the two were the largest economies in the world. However, China now contributes 15 per cent of the global GDP, while India’s contribution is a relatively modest 2.8 per cent. It’s also a fact that India produces some of the finest engineers, doctors, CEOs and other professionals for the rest of the world. It is also an indisputable fact that India’s population, it’s young demographics comprising a talented workforce and it’s fast-growing consumers, is equal to that of China’s and is likely to go beyond that of China, in a few years.

Thus, because of these favourable attributes, it’s given that India will carry on growing steadily at over six per cent plus over the next decade. However, the benchmarks for India are, and should be much higher, for us to emulate the Chinese economic miracle. To be anything close to great, India will have to do a China, i.e. a 10 per cent plus growth rate for over ten years, something that China enjoyed in the 2000-2010 period. That is the benchmark against which India’s performance should be judged. After all, beating low expectations is no beating, merely self-adulation.

The growth of any country is not an isolated metric, but something that is a function of institutional, global and cultural factors that are strongly influenced by policy and political leadership. To succeed, the following variables are key for India, a strong political leadership with vision and consistency, a robust financial system, a conducive global environment — economically and geopolitically, rule of law that is non-preferential and fair and that instils strong property rights and respect for contracts, an entrepreneurial community that is high on ‘animal spirits’ and is willing to take risks, an educated and skilled workforce that is ready to step up the potential of the economy and finally, social fairness and mobility.

The mandate that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government got in the parliamentary elections in 2014 was a landmark (the first government to have achieved absolute majority after 20 years) and there were high expectations for reform, governance and improving the growth trajectory of the economy. The economy is in the cusp of an acceleration and whilst some factors are working in India’s favour, we are encountering challenges in others.

Prime Minister Modi is a strong leader, which is accepted by even his strongest critics. He has led landmark policies, such as the introduction of the GST and digitalisation of subsidies. Many policies, such as the GST, are still at the early stages of implementation and their full positive impact on the economy will only be visible over the next few years. Despite rising NPAs in some parts of the economy, the Indian financial system is solvent and ready to fund the next stage of India’s economic expansion. The global environment is strong, with all major economies growing synchronously for the first time post the global financial crisis. The rising trade wars between countries is alarming, but not overly worrying at this stage.

However, the biggest challenge for India lies in the micro and not the macro. The Indian entrepreneurial community, which is the backbone of employment and capacity addition, is wallowing in financial stress and low confidence. Job creation, is partly because of technology, but largely because for entrepreneurs, financial stress has been weaker than desired.

Achieving the 10 per cent growth in ten years that India aspires for, will require synchronised efforts from the government and the private sector. In the first instance, the government will have to lead with large expansionary projects and spending, revive confidence in the economy, which will then inspire the private sector to do the same and enable it to get back on its feet. The Indian entrepreneur wants to be part of the Indian growth story and has been its key driver in the past, but has been under stress in recent times. This needs to be addressed to unleash the full potential of the economy.
