Well, you can always take a class...

London "Gentleman's Barber" Geo. F. Trumper is now offering shaving classes, one on one, with a skilled barber.

"Shaving knowledge and technique is not instinctive, all men need to learn the art and unfortunately many learn it badly. Common problems such as razor burn, bloodspots, ingrown hairs and redness are more often than not caused by bad shaving technique."

According to Inventor Spot:

"Perhaps this business was inspired by a hate of facial hair, or perhaps it's about self-improvement, but in any case, this is one business that is clearly designed for stupid men. Not only does it teach them a fundamental skill they've probably been using during their entire adult life, it also charges them a ludicrous amount."

I'm not sure if it's crazy, stupid, or smart, but I'm sure there are men who will take the class and be a better shaver for it.

What do you think? Would you take a shaving class?

On a completely unrelated note, Amazon is offering the latest generation 6" Kindle Wireless Reading Device for just $299 right now. Download your books, your favorite blogs and newspapers, and take your reading with you, all on one device.

This myth has probably led to more money being plopped down by teenage boys for razors and shaving cream than any advertising campaign run by grooming products companies, but unfortunately for the boys, it's not true.

According to a piece in AARP Bulletin Today:

"It only appears that hair is thicker after cutting because the proximal shaft [the part of the hair closest to the skin] is thicker in diameter." - Robin Ashinoff, M.D., director of Dermatologic, Mohs and Laser Surgery at Hackensack University Medical Center

"Once it has been shaven, the hair will regrow with a blunt tip, which creates a more stubbly and rough feeling. Shaving changes the hair shaft, which grows outside the skin, but doesn't change the hair follicle, which determines the hair's length, girth and color" - Paradi Mirmirani, M.D., dermatologist at the Permanente Medical Group in Vallejo, CA

But will American teens believe it if it hasn't been tested by Myth Busters?

"Dude! You're clean shaven but are you green shaven?

Yes, the eco marketing of all consumer goods has reached the scratchy male whisker. Despite the notion that the greenest face is the hairiest one, not all men like sporting facial fur and not all females like going into-the-wild to make out.

What steps can you take before going under the knife? Don't roam far from the healthy foam; don't be a fool with the wrong disposable tool; never brace your face with a jug that's mean to your mug."

The recommendation for using the Preserve Razor is a good one if you're still using a plastic cartridge razor, and the article points out the fact that the Braun Pulsonic has an Energy Star charger, but the one piece missing was a mention of using a double edged safety razor, which is a lot less wasteful (and cheaper) to use.

Fraser's Polar Ice shaving cream is another example of why it's not good to judge a book by its cover. The packaging is a basic, plain jane white tub with minimal blue text - not a flashy, hyped up label to be seen. But that's ok, because it's what's inside that counts, right?

Polar Ice is very thick and creamy, building up a great lather in no time, and it's got a refreshing feel on the face. The cream can be re-lathered on your whiskers with a little water if it dries, making for an easy and quick shave. The scent is light and kind of minty, with a cool feeling to it, not an overpowering smell.

One big plus for this is the price and the size of the tub. For nine bucks, you get a half a pound of cream, which ought to last you quite some time. That's a steal. I also liked the fact that it came in a tub and not a tube, so you don't have to squeeze it out, possibly wasting the extra if you squeeze to hard.

J.M. Fraser's Polar Ice is a great deal for a super shave. Nothing fancy, nothing extra, and it works great. Check it out - I think you'll like it a lot.

Facial hair just grows. You don't have to think about it, feed it, or nurture it, you simply have to deal with it as it grows. You can shave it all, or you can just shave part of it, leaving a goatee, a moustache, a soul patch, or even some Neil Young style lambchops.

But you have to make that decision every single morning.

"To be a man is to decide about facial hair. Even to just shave and not think about it is a form of decision. To the ancient Greeks, a beard was inseparable from manhood. The Romans shaved, probably to say they weren't like those uncouth Greeks. Through the centuries facial hair came and went like hemlines and tides. Most of the presidents between Lincoln and Taft had beards." - Mail Tribune

If you choose to shave it all everyday, you've got to decide on the method: electric razor, disposable razor, safety razor, or straight razor. And which cream or gel are you going to use? What about after the shave - are you using an aftershave or lotion, or just a rinse?

If you're only going to shave part of it, how much are you going to leave? If you have a trimmed beard, how far up the neck do you shave? How long will you let your beard, moustache, or goatee grow? And how will you keep it even? I'm sure every man has had one of those "Ooops" moments, where you slip and take off more on one side than the other...

Starting from a clean shave and growing out some facial hair takes some thought as well. What's my wife going to think? How will the guys at work respond? How long do I let it grow before giving up and just shaving the whole face again?

The cool thing about it is that you're in control. You can change your looks within a week, and if you don't like it, you can change back again, no problem. And as you get older, you may lose your hair, but you'll probably not lose your whiskers, which means you get to keep your style for a long time...

What's the toughest decision about facial hair for you?

Image: Freddy The Boy at Flickr

No, it's not a Hannibal Lecter accessory, it's a manscaping tool.

The Easy Raze is a German back shaver, made with fiberglass-reinforced plastic and stainless steel, which lets you reach those difficult places with both brush and razor.

The first model was a wooden coat hanger with a wet razor attached with adhesive tape, and after extensive testing with materials and designs, the Easy Raze was born.

According to Der Gepflegte Mann, the Easy Raze "permits the correct leadership of the razor blade on the skin, even without control of a mirror. Various options allow for individual adjustment to any body shape and also allow for shaving hard to reach places (eg under the scapula) and the thorough removal of hair, also against the growth direction." (via Google Translate).

The Easy Raze is not currently distributed in the U.S., although the company is looking for a back-shaving entrepreneur who wishes to grow the market here. Contact them for more details.

We now have a Shaving Stuff Facebook Page, so head over there and become a fan!
"In the storytelling tradition of Spalding Gray, Ken Campbell and Claire Dowie, David Bramwell's Haunted Moustache which plays at the Rondo Theatre Bath on Saturday July 4 recounts the fantastic but true tale of his surreal inheritance - a 100-year-old moustache in a box."

"If you're a man, your father probably taught you how to shave your face. It's highly improbable, though, that he included a lesson on shaving the rest of your body. And as "manscaping" starts going mainstream, many might wonder why a man would let his razor wander southward."

"Eric hadn't cut his hair or beard in more than eight years, and his hair, worn in a ponytail, was down to the middle of his back. His beard was down to his chest. His standard outfit was a T-shirt and jeans. That changed Thursday morning when celebrity men's grooming expert Diana Schmidtke and GQ style editor Adam Rappaport got their hands on him."

Over the last week, I've been trying out the Tom Robinn Paris Shaving Gel, and to be quite honest, the first two times I shaved with it, I wasn't really jazzed about it. But after a solid week of shaves, I've learned a thing or two about it, and I feel like I can endorse it.

The gel is non-foaming, and rather thick in texture, which is not something I'm used to. My usual is either Cremo or Speick, both of which are lighter and creamier. So what I did to get the best shave for myself was to mix in a little water with the Tom Robinn Shaving Gel. Once I did that, I was happy with the results. The gel is also clear, which made it a bit different for me - at first I couldn't see where I had shaved - but I got the hang of it pretty quickly.

"The benefit of our ingredients to you are: - Aloe Vera Extract: is used to calm irritations and inflammations. It stimulates skin cell growth and possesses moistening properties. It is a smoothing agent. - Sweet Almond Oil: lipids regulate water flow through epidermis and help skin's balance. It moisturises and protects epidermis. - Glycerin: makes skin suppler, smoother allowing a comfortable shave."

After my shave, I used the Tom Robinn After-Shave Gel, which I really enjoyed. It's alcohol-free and non-greasy, and soothed my skin with its aloe, almond oil, and ginseng formula.

Both of these Tom Robinn products also have a great scent - not too strong, but with a complex 'flavor'. If you haven't tried any of the Tom Robinn line, I think they're well worth it.

"It's an iconic look historically grown here by the blue-collar set. The 'stache is part of the uniform for ranchers, laborers, roughnecks and cowboys of all manner of industry -- men with skin as tough as their boots and whiskers as stiff as a grill brush.

The mustache has seen a recent renaissance, however, this time from the follicles of young men whose working toils are decidedly less rugged."

Time Magazine's Justin Fox on Economics and Mustaches:

"Fox, a clean shaven mortal who suffers from Bare Upper Lip Disorder (BULD), is a friend to people of mustached American descent, and writes Time's very fine Curious Capitalist blog. He also has a new book out which made the St. Louis Post-Dispatch list of 15 nonfiction books to read this summer. It's called "The Myth of the Rational Market: A History of Risk, Reward & Delusion on Wall Street" and we urge you to purchase here despite the fact that Fox promised to hook us up with Tom Friedman of the New York Times and it never came to fruition (he did buy us a few beers once, however)."

The world's most famous moustaches - shaved:

"The moustache is back. After years of tragic disuse and abuse, this commanding symbol of manly authority (and its current backdrop, Bob Ainsworth) has made a celebrated return to Cabinet in the reshuffle.

Bob's moustache is the first proper version to enter the cabinet on the face of a Labour minister in around 40 years, so it seems somehow serendipitous that Russian bloggers have just compiled a list of the top moustachioed celebrities of all time - and shaved them of their facial hair. Here's the five best, dedicated to you, Bob."

It certainly sounds like an interesting twist on cartridge razors!

"Conventional blades cut at an angle. The Orbix™ razor severs hairs with thousands of tiny rapid movements-cutting the hair shaft almost flush with the follicle. Gone is the drag of the blade against your skin. And since you don't have to apply any pressure on the blades while shaving, you eliminate the most common cause of nicks, cuts, irritation and razor burn."

I did have to laugh at the color selection, though, because you can get the Orbix in camouflage! I'm not sure if men are shaving in the hunting blind or what...

Mustache Parties Sweep the Nation:

"Beyond gatherings for the culmination of Mustache May, Cinco de Mustache and like events, there has been a recent uptick in festivities dedicated to the 'stache. Mustache parties are on the grow in cities across America."

Splitting Hairs, the movie:

"The film begins one year before the World Beard and Moustache Championships in Berlin, we meet Phil and Bruce at home, and learn of their ongoing rivalry. As Phil puts it: "it's whether he's the bigshot in America or I'm the bigshot in America." We also meet outspoken World Muskateer Champion Gary Johnson, who professes loyalty to no one."

Pubic Hair & Market Totalitarianism:

"If you've been fortunate enough to see -- one way or another -- much private anatomy in recent years, you'll be aware that we live in an age of de rigueur pubic (that's p-u-b-i-c, not p-u-b-L-i-c) shaving. Supposedly edgy and hip rather than creepy and infantilizing, this practice is truly rampant, from what I've (ahem) seen."

Depression Shaving v2.0:

"We keep a food pantry at our church for individuals who need it to get by. The other day one of our regulars asked for men's toiletries, toothpaste soap and shaving stuff. Shaving stuff? How could I not have thought of stocking up this essential of human worth and dignity? Kraft Dinner and canned soup are good for your belly, but what about your soul? So my question...what low-cost shaving products could I solicit as donations?"

Moustache in return to cabinet:

"The moustache has fallen into tragic disuse in recent years - and nowhere more so than in politics. Within seconds of being called to high office, once proud wearers of top lip upholstery have swallowed their pride and reached for the razor."

It's not just a shaving cream, it's also a pre-shave oil and a skin conditioner. With macadamia nut oil, jojoba and eucalyptus, Beard Lube leaves your skin feeling smooth and supple after the shave, and its light, see-through formulation makes shaving a breeze. It only takes a tiny bit of Beard Lube to cover your face, which means that a tube of it will last you a long time.

"The unique formula contains phospholipids - a rich source of essential fatty acids that are essential to the function of cell membranes - to bind moisture to the skin and support the natural skin barrier. The lightweight, penetrating formula not only helps prepare your beard by penetrating and softening whisker growth, it holds in moisture so your blade glides easily. Refreshes skin, too, for an easier, smoother shave and less razor burn."

It takes a toll everyday, from exposure to sun, smog, dirt from our hands, and from everything we put inside our body. And when our skin isn't healthy, it shows on our face.

I just found a super product for cleansing and exfoliating, made specifically for men. It's Tom Robinn Paris Gommage Doux Exfoliant (I don't speak French, but their website calls it 'Safe Peeling', or Soft Exfoliating Cream). This exfoliating cream is made with apricot oil, jojoba oil, and papaya extract, and it smells awesome: complex and manly.

After using for the first time, my skin felt like it was glowing. I could see the difference immediately. My pores were clean and the dead skin cells were gone, yet my face felt fully moisturized. Most cleansers leave your skin dry, necessitating a moisturizer or lotion, but with Tom Robinn, all I needed was a rinse and I was done.

Your significant other is going to notice the difference right away, and the after-scent is sure to please...

"A usually clean-shaven Barack Obama appeared to be growing a moustache as he delivered his much-anticipated message to the Muslim world from Cairo University.

Although faint, the U.S. president had a thin shadow above his upper lip, perhaps following in the footsteps of some of his close associates such as Attorney General Eric Holder and top advisor David Axelrod, who are both long-time stache aficionados.

But if Obama decides to turn that upper-lip warmer into a full-blown handlebar, he would become the first U.S. president since 1913 to have facial hair of any sort."

A green guy?

Take a look at these all-natural Father's Day Gift Ideas:

Old Post Road Oils: Eco-Friendly Shaving Lubricant

"We created No. 4 Shaving Soap because we believe shaving foam has become obsolete. Natural soap provides the best lubrication for shaving. But not just any natural soap; it has to be extraordinarily mild.

The slightest bit of harshness will burn a face. And natural soaps today don't pass muster. That's why we developed No. 4 specifically for shaving. We threw out all the conventional wisdom and blended a natural soap that gives the fullness of lubrication without any of the harshness."

Every Man Jack Four of a Kind Kit - Fragrance Free: Dermatologist Tested, Fragrance Free, Ideal for Sensitive Skin

RetroRazor: A Greener and Cheaper Way to Shave

"The RetroRazor handle will last for years, and replacement blades cost at least 90 percent less than cartridges. Blades will run most users between 15 and 75 cents per week. Safety razor blades have very little packaging or materials, almost 97% less waste!

Kiss My Face Moisture Shave Fragrance Free:

"Fragrance Free Moisture Shave contains a moisturizing formula with antiseptic Peppermint to cool and stimulate, emollients Olive Oil and Coconut Oil and Aloe Vera for healing. Goldenseal heals and acts as an antiseptic. Arnica aids circulation. PH Balanced, contains no animal ingredients, no artificial colors."

Preserve Razor Triple: Recycled and Recyclable:

"If you shave with a cartridge razor, consider switching to the Preserve Razor Triple as a nod to the 'green' movement. Recycline makes the handles from 100% recycled plastics, including at least 65% recycled Stonyfield Farm yogurt cups, and provides a postage-paid label to mail in your worn-out or broken handle to be recycled. The recycled handles get a second life as plastic lumber for park benches, decks, etc."

"There was a hairy moment or two at the weekend as the biennial World Beard and Moustache Competition got underway. After a few bristly rounds, David Traver from Anchorage, Alaska, was crowned the victor for his stunning woven beard and down-turned moustache. The prize beard measures over 20 inches long and was cultivated over a period of two-and-a-half years, before being plaited into the shape of a snowshoe."
