Continuing my series on the first seven essential items in my First Aid kit, I begin to define comfort care in this video by looking at the dictionary's definition of both words before offering my combined definition. I invite comments or opinions.

Is Comfort-care an Essential Item in Your First Aid Kit?

Do you have comfort care as an essential item in your First Aid kit? It may seem like an odd question to ask, but I see it as an essential question to ask. Once defined, I believe comfort care can magnify whatever other treatment is provided to someone who is ill or injured.

As I define comfort care in proceeding post, I invite you to comment on whether you agree or disagree with my definition of comfort care, or whether you agree or question the emphasis I place on comfort care as it relates to providing first aid.

There is Value to Life. Tourniquets can Save a Life. (Demonstrating the Placement of a Tourniquet)

This video completes a trilogy of videos having to do with tourniquets. This video will demonstrate tourniquet placement. And this tourniquet trilogy is part of a larger series describing the first seven essential items in my first aid kit.

Just to review, number seven was cravats (triangular bandages), number 6 was hemostatic dressings and number 5 are tourniquets.

Remember that severe blood loss could lead to death in about 3 minutes. That is faster than most any EMS agency can respond. If someone is bleeding severely, your actions before the medics arrive could be the difference between life and death. Knowing about quality direct pressure, hemostatic dressings, and tourniquet placement and proper use should be knowledge and skills you deem as invaluable as these can truly save a life; and there is value to all human life.

Tourniquets Can Save Lives; Proverbs 27:6 Offers Wisdom When Applying One.

Tourniquets. I found wisdom in Proverbs 27:6.

Tourniquets are the 5th item in the first seven essential items in my first aid kit. Tourniquets save lives. Yet, learning more about them can better prepare us if we ever have to use them.

Remember, someone can bleed to death within about 3 minutes. That is quicker than most any professional rescuer can respond to you. If someone is bleeding profusely from an arm or leg, applying a tourniquet before professional rescuers arrive may be what saves that person's life.

But to apply a tourniquet correctly will often create tremendous pain and discomfort to the person having it applied to.

That is where I receive some helpful wisdom from Proverbs 27:6

"The wounds from a friend can be trusted."

A true friend seeks the betterment and well-being for their friends. And, at times, that betterment for them could be painful to them. When having a true concern for someone, seek to respond for their betterment even if it may cause temporary pain or discomfort. In the end, you both will be glad you did.

Tourniquets can save lives! But what's a cravat? Watch, learn, or be reminded.

Tourniquets are the 5th item of the first seven essential items in my first aid kit. Tourniquets can bring fear or hesitancy in some assuming the person's limb will be lost. Others get confused it they can tighten, then loosen, on/off at will. These will be addressed, and more, so that you can feel confident in deciding whether you want to include tourniquets in your first aid kits. i struggle suggest you do carry them in your kit(s).

Though the seventh video in this first aid kit series, this will act as the first in a mini-series within the series as several videos will be needed to adequately explore the proper use and understanding of tourniquets.

Think CPR When Applying Direct Pressure? Yup!

Think CPR when applying direct pressure onto a wound? Yup!

In my last post I spoke of hemostatic dressings as 6th on my first seven essential items in my first aid kit and even mentioned that my number five would be tourniquets in following posts.

But here is an important supplemental video that directly impacts both hemostatic dressings and tourniquets.

Direct pressure!

Direct pressure is foundational to bleeding control whether utilizing hemostatic dressings and/or tourniquets as well. Whether using dressings, feminine hygiene products, cravats, or a towel, how you do direct pressure matters.

Think CPR!

Like CPR, direct pressure will be more affective when applied to someone's body part that is on a firm surface. Use the heel of your hand and be committed to leaning into it. Even try two knuckles to create more direct force of pressure on the bleeding area. This can significantly increase the benefit direct pressure can have to controlling blood loss.

So, like quality CPR, quality direct pressure can be the first essential step toward saving a life.

What is a Hemostatic Dressing? Watch and Discover…

What is a Hemostatic dressings? It is a wound-care treatment that can affectively accelerate the clotting process even with some severe bleeding. In most cases it is best to utilize these dressings along with quality direct pressure which I will demonstrate in the next video.

Hemostatic dressings are my number 6 on my first seven essential items in my first aid kit.

In this video you will learn what they are, the different forms they come in, the importance of when not to use them, as well as when best to use them.

Depending on the severity of the wound, someone could bleed to death in about 3 minutes. That is frequently less time than the response time of any EMS agency. Therefore having hemostatic dressings in your first aid kit really should be an essential item.

Seventh of My First Seven Essentials to My First Aid Kit is: Cravats! What’s a cravat, you say…?

Cravats, AKA, triangular bandages, have a variety of uses. In this video, I introduce using a cravat for wound care. This is particularly useful when the cravat is made from a muslin (cotton) material, so that it still has an absorbing quality.

Cravats can be used initially for bleeding control, or to secure a pressure bandage, or to stabilize a penetrating object, or even as a non-commercial tourniquet, and more.
