There's more to it than just really fast servers. Here's 10 of the many reasons to choose (dc) as your web hosting provider.

1. We never close.

We never leave, and the lights are never off. We are a true 24/7/365 company. Call us at 3:00am New Year's Night - we'll be here. It's part of our Support Promise.

2. We're affordable.

When you truly consider the facts - when you add up all of the features - we undeniably offer more value than any nearest competitor. Sometimes you have to look beyond the price and consider all things such as quality, uptime, support and then features. There is a cost to "cheap web hosting" - don't let it burn you.

3. We answer the phone.

Our average hold time for technical support because we call our valued customer when ever they need us.

4. We hire amazing employees.

The talent runs deep within our organization. This means a better hosting experience for you. While working at (dc) Diligent Creators may be great, interviewing isn't all that fun. Our on-site (no book, no google) written competency tests take approximately 2 hours to complete (yes, we'll give you a Red Bull). Simply, we find, hire and train the most talented individuals possible and we work hard to keep them.

5. Serving since 1997.

We've been in the web hosting business for over 10 years (in "internet years" that's something like 30 years!). We're not "fly by night" - we're not going anywhere. Our longevity and experience matters.

6. The web needed a new hosting partner.

In 2006, shared server technology died. The web changed, and so have the requirements of site owners. Traffic is up and traditional servers are buckling under the pressure. A new solution was needed that could handle overnight load spikes without costly reconfiguration. We had to re-invent web hosting. If you'd like - go ahead and call us HOSTING 2.0.

7. Top tier data centers.

Our data centers provide some of the highest level design and engineering features available in the world; surpassing uptime, security, cooling and power redundancy standards of most other hosting facilities.

8. World's greatest designers.

The world's hottest, most talented designers have trusted (dc) Diligent Creators for years to serve their digital creations. Being the most critical demographic on the Internet, we believe this has strong merit.

9. Innovation.

Over and over (dc) Diligent Creators has been first to market with new technologies. Notably, we are the hosting company authorized to host iASP for Linux, Macromedia's FlashCommunication Server, Zend's PHP Performance solutions, Six Apart's MovableType blogging software and now we have just released the world's most powerful, affordable utility computing hosting platform.

10. We rise to the challenge.

Just like all complex systems, hosting services occasionally encounter problems. When something unexpected happens within our network that affects your websites, we immediately rise to the challenge and provide transparent status updates in real-time through our custom-built incident manager. Subscribe to the RSS feed for an incident to stay updated every step of the way until it's resolved.
in reference to: WHY (DC) - TEN REASONS » About Us » (dc) Diligent Creators (view on Google Sidewiki)

Regards,

While it appears that only the US site has been updated, it’s probable that in the coming weeks other countries sites will be updated too.

The two pictures below show the old style (top) and the newer style (bottom). The new style, while looking similar to the old, provides a cleaner interface and a drop down box to share the news stories by email, reader, Facebook, Twitter or Buzz.

Another new option is the ability to sort the news on the webpage by "list" or "category." Sorting by list will rank the news in terms of its popularity and sorting by category will sort the news stories into their respective news topics, such as business, sports, health and so on.
The update does add a refreshed look to the website that now makes the old version feel stale and outdated. As Google looks to keep its readers happy and attract new users, expect the update to hit other countries in the near future.
Regards,

Feature by feature has been released in the past several months. The last news from Blogger, they now introduce the Blogger Stats feature. In accordance with the name, Blogger Stats is the feature to view the statistics of blogs directly at blog dashboard.

Although for this purpose, we can use other parties, say Google analytic, which is Google service, but the direct statistics at the dashboard will be efficient as you do not need to open a new window or tab of the browser.

However, the Blogger Stats feature is still under testing and not yet available in the dashboard. If you want to try this feature, you have to log in to blogger in draft where you can access here at http://draft.blogger.com. Please login with the same user and password that you use to log in to blogger, then slick Stats.

Hmmm, I wonder what other features are under development for the next release?

Bravo for blogger fans!
Regards,

This first version gives an early look at what’s planned for Firefox 4. Stay tuned, because there is more to come and we plan to release new beta versions every two to three weeks. Your feedback is essential to help shape the product which is why we’re launching now to hear from you early in our development process.

Firefox 4 Beta 1 includes dozens of major features and improvements – by testing them early we’ll be able to respond to your feedback for future versions of Firefox. Once you download Firefox 4 Beta 1, you’re part of our beta program and will receive regular updates as more features launch.

If you are using a Windows PC, the most noticeable new feature will be the look of the browser. We moved the tabs to the top to make it easier to focus on the web content and easier to control the tools in your Web browser. Also, if you have Windows 7 or Windows Vista the Menu bar was replaced with a single Firefox button so you can get to the most used options with just one click. These changes will be coming soon for Mac and Linux.

There is a lot more to this beta than a facelift on Windows, including:

New Add-Ons Manager: gives you more space to manage your Add-Ons, Themes and Plugins. You want to sleep, but you need to head downstairs to turn the computer off. Save some time, and do it from the computer upstairs.
There are a number of ways that you can restart or shutdown remote computers. You could use a remote desktop connection, but there are quicker ways and we will look at them today.

This article will show you various methods you can use to shutdown or restart computers on your network. We will look at:

Command Line/Shortcuts

Windows Tools

3rd Party Applications

As well as looking after the environment and your pocket by saving electricity, it is surprisingly easy to achieve. This article is very much aimed at a home user. Most server operating systems have much more powerful tools available.

What you need:

All of the methods below require you to have an administrator account on the computer you want to shut down. This was a relief for me as I could see all sorts of ways this could be abused without such security.

All the methods below will require you to have either the IP address or machine name of the computer or computers you want to shutdown remotely.

All of the methods below were created using Windows XP. Vista offers the same commands and a few extras, while Windows 2000 has similar commands. If you use 2000, change the “-“ to a “/”.

Method 1: Command line

Microsoft has included a tool that comes with Windows that will be the focus of most of this article. I always like to use inbuilt utilities when they are available. In this case the command is “shutdown”.

If you open up a command prompt (Start > Run > Cmd) and type “shutdown”, you will see that there are a bundle of arguments you can use with the shutdown command. The -m argument followed by the machine name, and a -r(restart trigger) will shutdown your computer. The best way for me to explain it is through examples.

In the command prompt, try the following:

shutdown -m \\computername -s

Lets break it down:

The shutdown command gets the ball rolling

-m \\computername should be the name of the computer you want to shutdown.

-s tells the remote computer to Shutdown.

There are a number of other arguments you can use.

-r tells the remote computer to Restart

-l tells the remote computer to logoff

So that is all you need to know to do it from the command line. I find it a bit tricky to remember all the switches, so the methods below are more ideal for me.

Method 2: Shortcuts

This method uses the same “shutdown” command as above. The only difference is that we put the command into a shortcut so that we can launch it quickly.

Right click on your desktop
Select “New”
Select “Shortcut”
In the path put in:

shutdown -m \\computername -s

Call it whatever you want and change the icon if you would like.

Now you have a shortcut that when it is launched will shutdown the remote computer. How easy is that!

Method 3: Windows Tools

The “shutdown” command we have been looking at above has a graphical front end with a few nice features in it. If you have multiple computers you want to shut down, this may be a good option for you.

To get into it, open a command prompt and type “shutdown -i”

The graphical front-end will open up.

In here, you will see the same options available to you as the manual methods above, but this time you can list or browse multiple computers on your network and do bulk shutdowns or restarts.

It is fairly self explanatory, so I won’t go into it much more. It isn’t all that powerful. Check out another utility below.

This method requires you to put in a reason as to why you are restarting/shutting down. It’s a real pain.

Method 4: External utilities

RCL– Remote Computer Log On is a program I came across while scouring through SourceForge. It doesn’t look like much, but it is much more powerful and user friendly than the options above.

RCL was originally designed by a school teacher to control the computers in a computer lab. RCL offers no annoying fonts or popups. It makes up for them in features.

You can login/out, shutdown or restart multiple computers. There is even a feature to enable or disable Internet access.

The computer list uses text files making it easy to list groups of computers; i.e. one file for each lab.

It may be more than you want, but I am definitely going to be using this gem. If only I had it 3 years ago. Download it from SourceForge.

Another program of note is XP remote Timer. It runs much the same as the shutdown command but it offers a timer feature. It might be a good way to control how much time the kids use their computer.

Which method is right for me?

When this article was suggested to me, shortcuts seemed like the most practical way to control 1 or 2 remote computers. As the amount of computers increased, the graphical utilities won out.

Note:

Windows has inbuilt power management features which you might choose to use to shutdown a machine automatically when it is not in use for a certain period of time. This would achieve the same thing, but it removes the control you can have.

Regards,

"Apple announced and released Safari 5. We figured we would show IE9 and Safari 5 together", said LeBlanc. A video shows the two browsers running demos from Microsoft's Internet Explorer 9 test drive website.

The first demo used is the flying images JavaScript demo. Internet Explorer 9 manages around 50fps with Safari 5 struggling at 9fps. The second and final demo is the Flickr Explorer test. Internet Explorer 9 hovers around the 20fps mark whilst Safari 5 stays around 7fps throughout the test. Microsoft is currently developing Internet Explorer 9 internally and has issued preview builds for developers. LeBlanc also revealed that Microsoft has seen over a million downloads for the Internet Explorer 9 developer preview so far.

Regards,

"It's the largest collection of web content we've offered. Whether it's a news story, a blog or a forum post, you can now find links to relevant content much sooner after it is published than was possible ever before", said Carrie Grimes, Software Engineer at Google.

Google has built a new search indexing system as web content is growing in size and is more diverse in the form of video, images, news and real time updates. To keep up, Google has built Caffeine. The old index had several layers (see image above) that updated at different rates to others. To refresh a layer of the old index, Google would analyze the entire web which meant there was a significant delay between when Google found a page and when it was available on its search pages for end users.

With Caffeine, Google analzyes small portions of the web and updates the index on a continuous basis. Every second, Caffeine processes hundreds of thousands of pages in parallel. Caffeine takes up nearly 100 million gigabytes of storage in one database and adds information at a rate of hundreds of thousands of gigabytes per day. Google claims you'd need 625,000 of the largest iPods to store that much information.

Users who search on Google.com should see improvements in the months to come.

Regards,

Many see this day as the time when Apple was able to overtake Microsoft, when the underdog finally bested the incumbent. Late in the afternoon, the market capitalization of Apple (AAPL) crept ever so slightly past Microsoft (MSFT), and set off a celebratory tsunami of blog posts, tweets, Facebook statuses, and obligatory internet forum flame wars. It was almost like Apple fans thought they ‘defeated’ Microsoft in some way. And maybe they did. Market capitalization is a very common and practical tool for evaluating the market worth of a company, both for its ease of use and its ability to quickly give a snapshot the attitude of investors about a company. Specifically, market capitalization is the price of a company’s share multiplied by its total outstanding shares. This allows for the size of a company to be factored into the determination of its value, rather than just the share price alone (Google may have a much higher stock price than, say, Wal-Mart, but that doesn’t say anything about the value of the company in and of itself, due to the sheer size of Wal-Mart). Apple’s stock price has been higher than Microsoft for quite some now, and the reason why that alone didn’t cause as much reaction is because just comparing stock prices doesn’t take into account Microsoft’s size. It’s more important that Apple’s market cap rose above Microsoft, because it’s a more comprehensive evaluation of investment worth. It means that even though Apple is a smaller company, with a much smaller market share and product base, investors still see Apple as a company worth investing in more than Microsoft.

The amount of hype this particular piece of news is generating boggles my mind. Considering the huge consecutive successes Apple has experienced since Jobs retook the throne, which drove market confidence up and up again and again, the fact that Apple became an investor’s gold mine is not surprising in the least. When a company releases an iPod, an iPhone, and then an iPad, each taking the retail market by storm and consuming almost miraculous amounts of market share in their respective segments, financial forecasts will skyrocket. Despite all the controversy surrounding their behavior in certain areas of market etiquette and established wisdom surrounding open-source ideas and policies, Apple has consistently released products that people love. They’ve made product releases an art and a science, and it’s a symphony of beautiful music to investors’ ears. Apple is completely deserving of the accolades, and I wouldn’t dare take the credit away. What I don’t understand is how this has anything to do with Microsoft.

For a long time, it was Apple vs. Microsoft, Jobs vs. Gates, Windows vs. Mac OS, and PC vs. Macintosh. Microsoft made an OS, and it was very successful; Apple made an OS, it tried to compete, and generally failed in the market. In those heady days of old, both companies were software companies. Now, not so much. Apple’s return to the limelight after a few years in exile under a different CEO was marked by the release of a mobile digital music player. While OS X was a huge step in the right direction as far as mainstreaming the OS, nothing brought in revenue and visibility like the iPod. The iPod is one of those rare products that are so pervasive in the consumer market that even music devices that aren’t iPods are called iPods by many people (Think Kleenex, Nerf guns, Band Aids, or “I’ll Google that”). On the heels of the iPod and its various critically acclaimed upgrades came the iPhone, pushing Apple further into dominance in the mobile device market. In fact, Apple COO Tim Cook believes that Apple should be seen as a mobile device company. Following the one-two punch of the iPod and iPhone, the iPad is released, once more dominating the market and selling its first million in less than a month.

While Apple was busy reinventing itself as the mobile device company everyone wanted to emulate, Microsoft took its utter and total domination of the OS market and entrenched itself in the enterprise world. While everyone can agree that Windows Vista was a failure on many counts, and possibly one of the key factors behind the decline of their market cap and overall financial performance, businesses, where the bulk of computing happens, just stuck with XP and waited out the storm. Windows Server 2003 and all its numerous and varied enterprise management tools is what IT professionals use, period. There is no viable substitute for Active Directory, and there is nothing on the horizon that is even thinking about invading that territory. Windows Server 2008 is becoming very popular in the enterprise, especially for its virtualization capabilities, and it’s a matter of time (and a service pack or two) before Windows 7 takes the place of XP as the leading corporate OS. The world’s businesses run on Windows, and that’s where Microsoft has succeeded more than anywhere else. Just the opposite of Apple, every piece of hardware Microsoft puts out seems to be doomed to market failure, and the Zune and Kin platforms are perfect examples of that.

You see, we’re comparing apples and oranges (pun definitely intended). The symbolic accomplishment of Apple achieving a higher market cap than Microsoft is fueled by memories of the war that these two technology visionaries once fought long ago. While Mac OS market share is growing, it isn’t even close to becoming a threat to the Windows platform, and Apple understands that. The fact that the Apple has ascended to a cool 2nd place in the US market capitalization standings is big deal. The fact that they beat Microsoft doesn’t mean anything in the context of Apple winning the old OS wars.

Apple’s market cap conquest will be thrown around for a while as ammunition for the biggest tech flame war of our time. It will be a buzzword in Internet forums when Apple fans want to prove their superiority over Microsoft. It’s a misplaced victory, however, and the fans should be celebrating the fact that their market cap is 2nd in the country, period. Spinning the victory as a defeat to Microsoft only weakens the real meaning behind the success, and completely misinterprets the perceived competition between Microsoft and Apple.

Regards,

PIN codes to protect users from accessing your phone won't stop the vulnerability, according to Engadget.

Bernd Marienfeldt and Jim Herbeck discovered the vulnerability, and said it can even access most of the users data. The vulnerability can even work on an iPhone 3GS running firmware 3.1.3, when you connect it to a computer running Ubuntu Lucid Lynx, even when the phone is in a locked state.

This vulnerability can't be spread like the iPhone iRickRoll'd worm, which changed users backgrounds on their jailbroken iPhones, running SSH and who haven't changed their default password. This new vulnerability appears to only be when the phone is tethered to a computer running Ubuntu Lucid Lynx, so any person wanting your data will need to get a hold of your iPhone first.

With open vulnerabilities like this, Apple will find it hard to turn the iPhone into a prime-time corporate device, where companies like BlackBerry have proven to be reliable and secure. Apple has yet to address the vulnerability or release a patch.

Regards,

The news isn't exactly surprising, as all previous models of iPhone were released in June, and the annual keynote at the World Wide Developers Conference will be held this year coinciding with the logical June release date.

The much anticipated phone comes on the heels of heated controversy over Apple's handling of leaked (or just misplaced) information about the phone. Many times, the controversy overshadows the real story, which is the phone itself. It has been rumored and pretty much confirmed for quite some time that there will be a front-facing camera that will have video chat capability, as well as an updated backside camera with LED flash. According to Gizmodo's perusal of the prototype they found/bought, the screen looked like it was sporting a higher resolution than previous models, 960x640 pixels. All in all, it will be an exciting release, and I'm sure much of the controversy over Apple's behavior as of late will die down once users can get their hands on the new iPhone.

Regards,

Market cap is one of many ways that the financial markets measure the value of a company. It is worked out by the value of the stock versus the amount issued. As it stands right now Apple is valued at nearly $227 billion compared to Microsoft's $223 billion. Although Apple's market cap is higher right now, Apple does not issue dividends to its share holders whereas Microsoft does and this affects the comparison. Companies can not be compared on market cap alone, however this is a significant milestone for the folks in Cupertino and for the industry as a whole.

What does this mean for Microsoft?

It's a clear wake up call and solid proof that Apple's gains in the mobile market and MP3 player market have turned the company around. In the past five years alone Apple's stock has risen nearly 560% whilst Microsoft's has risen a mere 4%. The New York Times names Apple the new King of Technology. Despite Microsoft's domination with its Windows and Office software the company struggles to compete in search, mobile the MP3 player market. All three markets are huge areas of growth, innovation and provide opportunities for huge profit gains. With the recent news of Microsoft's re-organisation just beginning to settle, it's clear the company has a huge task ahead to regain market share, mind share and most of all to swing consumers taste. It's clear that over the last five years consumers needs and tastes have shifted from business focussed devices and software to devices that work well, are simple to use and are good looking. Consumers also want something that works quickly with a simple user interface. Apple and Google have successfully filled a gap that Microsoft missed. Microsoft dropped the ball on Windows Mobile but will Windows Phone 7 be too late too?

Regards,

Their numbers are based trends from their own site's visitors, as well as outside sources. With changes in the browser wars, such as Microsoft's EU browser ballot, many would think that Chrome's increased numbers are being had at the expense of Microsoft's Internet Explorer. However, this doesn't seem to be the case, as browser market share only represents the overall picture of mainstream users--not the underlying mechanics of it.

In general, public reports have shown Chrome's significant growth since its release. While its market share numbers are nowhere near those of Firefox or Internet Explorer yet, rapid growth is still evident. According to NetMarketShare, in one year, Chrome has gone from 2.4% of the overall browser market, to 6.73% (close to a 300% increase). Firefox, on the other hand, has only gone from 22.43 to 24.59% in the same period, while Internet Explorer has dropped, significantly, from 68.32 to 59.95%.

Though Firefox, from a mainstream perspective, is still holding steady as it prepares the next significant version of its web browser (4.0), its usage among users who understand browsers and what each has to offer, seems to be falling fast. On the other hand, among the same users, Internet Explorer is still holding steady. This means that Chrome, which has shown a significant bump in traffic on most tech web sites, is picking up most, if not all of its users, from Firefox--not Internet Explorer. ReadWriteWeb's statistics show the following:

This data leads ReadWriteWeb to believe that Chrome's battle is with Firefox, and no other. Internet Explorer's market share has been in decline for quite some time now, though among the tech-savvy, its numbers are unchanged. This can probably be attributed to Microsoft's lack of innovation (though with IE9, things look promising) and the amazing growth that Firefox has seen over the past number of years. With Chrome, on the other hand, Google has hit Mozilla in the gut. Before its release, nothing had come close to the adoption that Firefox was seeing. Chrome, and its new found love for developers and their extensions, is allowing Google to aim straight for the very blood that keeps the Firefox community so alive and well. With yesterday's news of a stable version of Chrome for Mac and Linux, the little browser that could will continue seeing even more growth at the hands of other browser--especially Firefox.

The real question isn't if the above information is true, but rather what it means for the browser market as a whole. Should this trend continue, it will interesting to see if its effect bleeds into mainstream statistics. Will Firefox 4 have the same incredible level of impact that Firefox 3 did? Will Chrome begin making its way into the computers of the Average Joe? How will IE 9 affect the whole situation? Essentially, what will browser market shares look like in the near and distant future? These are all questions to be answered as the next few years unfold. When you look at it this way, the browser wars are far from over--they're just getting started.

Regards,

In its fastest iteration yet, Chrome, with its new V8 JavaScript engine improvements, boasts a 30% to 35% speed improvement over the last version. This makes Chrome v5.0 between 213% and 305% faster than the debut release of Google's foray into the browser market.

In addition to this build dumping its beta tag, Google has officially unleashed stable releases for both the Mac and Linux platforms. Chrome v5.0 brings many new enhancements to the table. Flash integration, unfortunately, did not make the cut. However, Google states that once Adobe releases Flash 10.1, they will add it into the browser. This will make the manual installation of Flash a thing of the past. The notable changes in Chrome v5.0 are:

   Redesigned Bookmark Manager (pictured below)

   Geolocation APIs

   App Cache

   Web sockets

   File drag-and-drop

If you're already running Chrome on your Windows, Mac, or Linux machine, expect an auto-update soon. As always, you can force an update by going to the tools menu and selecting About Google Chrome; from there you can tell it to apply the latest update. According to some recent spy work by Engadget, it seems that video chat has now been indisputably confirmed for the 4G iPhone. Some recent tweeting has revealed that American Beauty director, Sam Mendes, is in the midst of creating a bunch of commercials for the launch of the next iPhone. As per Engadget's inside tipster, at least one of the commercials will showcase a video chat conversation using the front-facing camera.

Engadget feels very confident about their source. Combined with video calls debugging screenshots unearthed by Boy Genius, it would be a complete shock if the next iPhone didn't contain a video calling feature. The interesting thing will be to see how AT&T's network reacts to all the extra traffic. Networks like that of Verizon and Sprint, which are rumored to also be getting the phone, seem better suited for such a data intensive feature. There's always the unlikely possibility that, just like with MMS, AT&T will shut off the feature until their network is ready to cope with the extra traffic (or just limit it to Wi-Fi only). Whatever the case may be, the world won't have to wait much longer to find out.

The next iPhone is set to be announced by Steve Jobs on June 7th at Apple's annual World Wide Developers Conference. A release date has not been set.

Regards,

In an email response to a tech enthusiast, CEO and founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, responded to privacy concerns by saying that the company has made "a bunch of mistakes," and that it intends to correct them, learn from user feedback, and grow from the experience. The full email can be seen on Scobleizer.

At the TechCrunch Disrupt conference in New York City, Facebook vice president of product, Chris Cox has given slightly more detail as to how and when Facebook intends to respond to such concerns. In a Google Buzz-like fashion, beginning tomorrow, Facebook will speedily pump out a "drastically simplified" and much improved set of privacy controls. Hoping to alleviate Facebook's issue of having complex to set up, and not-so-private privacy, the company plans to show its users how serious it is about making things right.

After a number of privacy tweaks, and many bugs along the way, Facebook is being very open about its mistakes and desire to change. It seems like Steve Ballmer's impression of Mark Zuckerberg and his intentions with Facebook were pretty spot on. According to TechFlash, when asked about Zuckerberg by Wired.com's Evan Hansena, Ballmer responded:

"Bad guys are bad guys. OK? There are guys who are really trying to innovate and do interesting things where it's complex. It's hard. Mark is a good guy. Are they struggling with a set of issues? Sure, they're struggling with a set of issues, and you should chat with those guys about it. But the notion that people are trying to do innovative thing that do advance the state of the art, both in privacy and in communications, that's kinda the way the system works, and if people don't want to play on their property, they won't play on their property."

Regards,

Seven years later they have finally revealed how the revenue is split.

Google revealed on their AdSense blog stating, "Today, in the spirit of greater transparency with AdSense publishers, we’re sharing the revenue shares for our two main AdSense products — AdSense for content and AdSense for search."

They say that 68% of all revenue from AdSense for content goes to the publisher. AdSense for content is the advertising that you see on websites that use Google's AdSense service to generate revenue.

AdSense for search partners earn 51% of the revenue generated from ads. AdSense for search is the advertising you see next to your search results when using a sponsored search box. Firefox takes uses Google's AdSense for search by providing the search box built into the browser. When someone clicks on an advertisement after searching Google with the Firefox search box Firefox gets 51% of that revenue generated.

Google says the portion of the revenue they keep for content based ads "reflects Google's costs for our continued investment in AdSense — including the development of new technologies, products and features that help maximize the earnings you generate from these ads. It also reflects the costs we incur in building products and features that enable our AdWords advertisers to serve ads on our AdSense partner sites" While the portion they keep for search based ads goes into research and development for their core search and AdSense integration.

Regards,
