What do you think it must have been like for the Gibbs family to move into an all-white neighborhood and be fearful for their safety? Why do you think that Dr. Gibbs’ father and mother chose to do that? Have you ever experienced discrimination?

Dr. Gibbs said that the role models for girls were more limited during the time that she grew up than for boys. Dr. Gibbs played with her brother’s chemistry set and people assumed that she wanted to become a Dr. like her father but he was more interested in her brother’s future than hers. What do you think about that? Do you think that there are different expectations for girls than boys?

Do you think that it is more important for someone to believe in you or for you to believe in yourself to succeed? This answer will be different for everyone.

Given what you know about Dr. Gibbs early experiences from the video, why do you think she wanted to become a doctor? What do you want to be or do?

Dr. Gibbs says she takes a lot of pride in her family–Dr. Gibbs daughter is named after her mother. She says, “You have to know where you come from and where you are going.” Can you answer that question for yourself?

Dr. Gibbs says that to be successful, children need to know how to play. Play is how you learn and build skill sets to work with others. Do you think that your parents and your school agree with that statement? Do you agree with that statement?

Dr. Verna Gibbs received her BA degree from Harvard University and her MD degree from Duke University Medical School. She completed her residency in General Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) in 1984 and continued her clinical training in renal transplantation with a fellowship at the California-Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco. She did a molecular biology fellowship at Genentech Inc., South San Francisco which she completed in 1989. She joined the faculty in the Department of Surgery at UCSF where she is a Clinical Professor in Surgery. Her first clinical assignment was at the San Francisco General Hospital where she was a General and Trauma surgeon and in 1991 she moved to the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center where her clinical practice has focused in general surgery. From 2002-2004 she was Chief of General, Vascular and Thoracic Surgery at the San Mateo Medical Center. Currently, Dr Gibbs is the Chair of the SFVAMC Surgical Service Quality Improvement Committee, the Physician Utilization Management Advisor and the faculty director of the VA Surgical Quality Improvement Program (VASQIP) at the SFVAMC. She is Chair of the Physicians Relations Committee for Quality Improvement at Anthem Blue Cross of California and is a member of the Wellpoint Physicians Advisory Council. She is also a member of the Board of Overseers of Harvard University.

Polly says she grew stronger as a result of growing up in a bigoted community and works hard to make sure no one else is treated unfairly like she was. Can you think of anyone, either in real life, a movie or a book that has overcome hardship to become a leader?

Polly encourages people to be willing to take risks. Safe risks include speaking up for yourself or trying something you’ve never done before even if you fail. What are some risks you’ve taken and how have they turned out?

Polly feels it’s important to give back to her community, for example, she volunteers her time to help people in prisons. What are some things you do to help people. How does that make you feel?

Sometimes family or friends have to help each other out. Polly lives near her parents so they could help her raise her children while she worked. Can you think of times someone’s stepped in to help you or your family?

Many successful people talk about others who encouraged them along the way. Who are those people in your life (e.g, family, teachers, friends)?

Polly Baca was the first Hispanic woman in the Colorado State Senate and has worked for three U.S. Presidents. She grew up in a poor, Mexican American family and faced racism as a child. This experience motivated her to make a difference for others. Polly believes that everyone can develop their own special talents by working and studying hard, learning from others and taking risks. Polly encourages viewers to seize opportunities and learn from mistakes while remembering to contribute to their community.

Larissa watched her friends make some bad choices. Have you ever encountered a situation where you have learned from your friend’s mistakes?

Setting goals helped Larissa overcome challenges at work. What goals have you set and have they helped you work through a difficult time?

tw telecom is a billon dollar company and has grown to almost 3000 employees. Would you like a career as a CEO such as Larissa, managing such a large company?

At a difficult time in Larissa’s life she did not have anyone to support her. Who supports you and how?

Larissa is involved in the Sungate Kids organization because she cares about kids and wanted to help those in need. What are you passionate about?

Larissa Herda is the CEO of tw telecom. She has grown her company from $26 million to $1.2 billion and employs 3,000 people. In this interview, Larissa shares how she overcame a difficult childhood. While her friends also got into trouble, she realized the path she wanted to take.

Larissa’s advice to our listeners is to:

Get an education.

Work hard.

If there is something you really want… go for it.

If you are undecided about careers she suggests trying a lot of things, asking questions and not being afraid to fail. Larissa says, “You need to take risks or you won’t have rewards.”

Adrienne gets help from a mentor at work to help her improve in her career. Who helps you improve at the things you do?

Adrienne had to work hard in school to excel in math, so that she could follow her dreams of becoming an engineer. What subjects are more difficult for you and how do you work through the challenge?

When Adrienne was younger she had cancer, but she was able to stay strong and work through her disabilities. What’s a challenge you’ve overcome and how’d you work through it.

Setting goals helped Adrienne achieve her dream of winning a gold medal. What goals do you have and how do you plan to accomplish them?

Sometimes Adrienne is discriminated against, but once she gets to know the person they work through their differences and it is no longer a problem. How do you work through times when you are discriminated against?

Adrienne Rivera, Aerospace Engineer and Paralympic Gold Medalist, talks to SheHeroes about the many obstacles she’s faced over the years to become a Gold Medal Skier and her success in the field of Aerospace Engineering, a field still dominated by men.

At age 14, Adrienne survived Bone Cancer, but not before losing her leg to the disease. Despite her disability she took up skiing only to rise to the top, taking home both a Gold and Bronze Medal in the 1994 Paralympic Games in Norway. After her success in sports she pursued a career that had interested her since her days as a Girl Scout, Engineering.

Adrienne Rivera has more than earned the title of SheHero by overcoming adversity and achieving her goals both as an Olympian and as an aerospace engineer.

What do you admire about Colleen?

Colleen was discriminated against because she is a woman working in a job that is usually done by men. Have you ever felt discriminated against because of your race, gender, age, religion, or other differences? How did it make you feel and what did you do about it?

Colleen doesn’t waste time trying to please other people or pretend to be something she is not. Do you think it’s important to be true to yourself? Have you ever tried to pretend to be a certain way or say you like something just so others would like you?

Colleen loves many things about her job including the people she works with. What kinds of things might make you feel happy with a job you have someday? (e.g., work with lots of different kinds of people, solve puzzles or challenges, work with animals, allow you to travel)?

When she doubted herself, Colleen was inspired by her parents. Who inspires you?

Margaret says that if you enjoy doing something, you work harder at it. Has this ever happened to you? Give an example.

What about being a scientist like Margaret sounds fun to you?

Margaret’s students inspire her to continue teaching physics. What or who inspires you in one part of your life?

Margaret talks about how her students “transform” from being afraid of physics and math to feeling confident and excited by them. Can you think of things you’ve learned that you were first afraid of? How did you feel when you finally learned them?

Can you think of a song that represents Margaret’s story?

Margaret Murnane, laser physicist, MacArthur “Genius Grant” award recipient and creator of a laser that flashed for 10 quadrillionths of a second (the fastest thing that any human being has ever created) shares the challenges she has faced being a female in the field of science.

Listen as Margaret discusses with Zahra Mohamed Ali from Girls Inc of Metro Denver how she overcame other’s doubts about her ability to do physics and how she loves to watch students overcome their fears about not knowing enough.
