One of my favorite books from childhood – still exciting and awesome all these years later.

In a frenzy of Kindle downloading, I decided to get this book. It has been a number of years (like well over 20+) since I’d last read it and I was in the mood for what I remembered being a great adventure as a teen. Memory served me correctly – this is just as fun a read now, if not more so, than it was in my younger years.

Books to me are like sweets to a sugar addict. I get into a book and I can hardly wait to turn the next page. Every word is devoured in my unquenchable hunger to plow through each page until finally, I reach the end. Then there is a brief moment where I sit silently and digest what I’ve just experienced. If the book was a good one, I feel for some time as though I’m actually inside the pages. Experiencing the characters and their lives. I love this feeling. And since I typically finish books at night… when I should be sleeping… my dreams are punctuated with pieces of the fiction that so consumed me. Journey to the Centre of the Earth is no exception.

I grew warm as the temperature rose. Felt the breeze and tasted the spray of the vast underground ocean. Recoiled in horror as the nephew was lost in the vast darkness. And my heart leapt from my chest when the monsters appeared. For several hours I ceased to exist in the here and now and instead, became a silent companion to the brave adventurers as they pressed on against all odds.

Is it any wonder that so many different movies have been made about this – one of the greatest adventure tales of all time? Never mind that this is the wildest fiction possible – that matters not one bit. Jules Verne was a master storyteller. A true master.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It’s free for the Kindle so there is no excuse in not going this very instant and downloading it. If you have children, this would be a great evening read-aloud story. I have many fond memories of my mom reading to us so many nights before bed.

Book Description
The story involves a team of explorers who journey down a volcano in Iceland to the “center of the Earth”. There they discover that the world is hollow and that the inside of the earth are prehistoric animals still live.

A good read that would make an excellent vacation book. Easy to read, hard to put down.

I downloaded this book for my Kindle because it was free and had a decent rating at Amazon. At first, it was difficult to get into it – I really don’t like books that are written in the first person, present tense. However, in spite of my initial dislike with the book, I persevered and eventually, it began to grow on me. This style of writing made it more real and I was sucked into the storyline as though I was actually there.

The plot reminded me of Indiana Jones. Part thriller, part adventure – the wildly improbable scenarios require the reader to leave skepticism at the door. Yet in spite of the utterly fantastical storyline, the book was fun to read.

Because this is a book by a Christian author, there is no vulgar language or sexual content. But, this is not an overtly Christian book. I believe this book would appeal to a wide audience of readers – regardless if they are Christians or not.

If you are looking for a book that doesn’t require much thought and provides a good amount of entertainment, I recommend Elisha’s Bones. I enjoyed this book enough that I will look at getting his other books from Amazon (if they come down in price) or borrowing them from my local library.

As of this post date, this book is free on Amazon. Get your copy while it remains this way!

From Back Cover
The bones of the prophet once raised the dead to life… but they vanished from history in a whisper. Now Jack Hawthorne, part-time skeptic and full-time professor of archaeology, is enlisted to sift them from the sands of time. Bankrolled by a dying man of unlimited means, Hawthorne’s hunt spans the globe and leads him into a deadly conspiracy older than the church itself. And he soon discovers those sworn to keep the secret of the bones will do anything to protect them.
