I am so excited to make this for dinner! I looks so yummy. I found this recipe on "PickyPalate". I love that site! Not only are her recipes fantastic, but the pictures she takes are beautiful too! I have some chicken I picked up on sale at Fresh Market, and pasta and bbq sauce from a sale last week this dinner is looking like it will budget friendly and delicious.

Do you use "reuseable" grocery bags? I do, and I love them. I use them for much more than just getting groceries home from the store. They carry towels to the pool, toys and and treats for play dates, and store random things that collect in the car, the list goes on and on. Did you know those bags could be making your family sick? I got home from a recent shopping trip and realized the bags were definitely not looking to fresh.

Then, I read this post on Happy Housewife and will admit it kinda made me sick to think that I could have made my family ill! I did a little more research and realized lots of the practices that they talked about are ones that I have done in past (using bags for other things).

A quote from one study says:

"Our findings suggest a serious threat to public health, especially from coliform bacteria including E. coli, which were detected in half of the bags sampled," saidCharles Gerba, a UA professor of soil, water and environmental science and co-author of the study. "Furthermore, consumers are alarmingly unaware of these risks and the critical need to sanitize their bags on a weekly basis."

Yikes huh?! Our Healthy Family tip this week is to make sure those reuseable bags get washed between use. Another way to help make sure you are keeping things clean is to designate bags for produce, meat, and other items. I have bags designated for produce (green bag) meat (red bag) and other groceries (black, blue and purple). Another super easy way to do that is to use a permanent marker and write what the bag is to be used for. Now I am off to wash the reuseable bags before the new sales start tomorrow!

Kmart Doubles Health and Beauty Coupons this Week

This week Kmart is doubling Health and Beauty coupons. Be sure to check here to see if your Kmart is participating in this event or you could even call your local store to check.

Here are some details to know before heading out:

You will have to have a shoppers rewards card and scan it before your transaction (I signed up right at the register)
You can only double 5 coupons per customer per day
Only coupons up to $2 will be doubled

I myself do not go to Kmart when they double coupons. I find that 5 coupons isn't worth my drive. I also think that Kmart's prices are higher than many other stores.

If you do decide to do some shopping Bargain Blessings has a list of potential match ups with some items that end up being FREE!

I heart my full pantry!

Yep! I do. Silly I know but I love it so much! I love that using coupons and grocery smarts list That's my confession from a "couponer" this week. As I was planning for a family event I made a grocery list and then shopped from my own shelves. My husband looked at the list I had made when I was done "shopping" in my pantry and was AMAZED at all the things I had crossed off the list because we already had them on hand. It was so much fun! Lots of times when I bring products home for ridiculously low prices I will write how much I spent on them vs. regular price. When we added it up there was over $100 in savings just on the ONE list I had made for a family party we will be having. Cool huh? The list of things that do need to be purchased had just produce and milk (not things I keep 3 months of on hand =) )

Fun in the Sun-Healthy Family Tip

If you're planning to have some fun in the sun this weekend remember to take the sun screen. I was looking at the store display of all the different levels and could not decide what to buy. If you have ever wondered the same thing then here is a little bit of info about sunscreen.

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. The number you see associated with SPF represents the length of time you can stay out in the sun without burning, multiplied by the corresponding number. The SPF is a laboratory derived ratio which measures the increased amount of radiation which causes redness in skin when the sunscreen tested is applied, compared to when it is not used at all. For example if it takes 10 minutes for unprotected skin to show redness, then an SPF15 sunscreen correctly applied, will take 15 times as long or 150 minutes to burn. Then there are a few other factors you do need to take into account:

-Clothing rubbing against skin, playing in water, or sweat can all make it wear off faster.

-Fair Skin burns easily and should have sunscreen reapplied more often- My little one hates sunscreen but a minute of fighting while applying it is better than a sunburned little kid!

-The temperature, and if you are in direct sun or in the shade

Remember that its much better to be safe than sorry when it comes to using sunblock!

If you need to pick up some sunscreen I found an online coupon to use!
