Beautiful Raven

noreply@blogger.com (Michael & Sheena Brown) — Wed, 01 Jun 2011 13:50:00 +0000

I was given the opportunity to meet someone that I truly admire. This young lady has been fighting for her life for quite some time now, as she was diagnosed with cancer. When I met her I was completely amazed with her beauty, but even more amazed at how her smile could light up even the darkest night! This young lady walked with strength and happiness. This was not what I was expecting.... just before our photo shoot, Raven had been pretty sick and was having some trouble with her liver. I was prepared for a very tired and sick girl. After meeting her I was wonderfully surprised to see a strong, determined, and very happy young lady who I believe could have even ran laps around me, not to mention VERY photogenic!!!! I have to say, there are so many of us that let the small things get us down. My goal is to be more like Raven (who I called Super Woman as we were sitting and talking around the campfire, and still believe she may very well be). If cancer can't get her down, then why should we let a few minor kinks in the road get us down? Stay strong Raven, we are all so very proud of you!!!!

Are You Second?

noreply@blogger.com (Michael & Sheena Brown) — Wed, 01 Jun 2011 13:00:00 +0000

Hello friends,

Ok, I know that this is supposed to be a blog about photography, but we said in the beginning that this thing could include anything. Rambling, photography tips, gear tips, muses about our life, recent photo shoots, or just something that's on our mind. So here's another post about something that I can't get off of my mind :)

Recently I heard an advertisement on the local Christian radio station that I listen to about a website called I Am Second http://www.iamsecond.com/. After some delay (otherwise known as distraction) I finally hit the site and was amazed at what I saw and heard. The basic premise revolves around mostly celebrity figures, their past struggles, and ultimate conclusion that a happy, fulfilling life revolves around God being first and self being second. Some of the videos are touching, others will absolutely amaze you. I have linked to one below featuring Brian "Head" Welch formerly of the rock group Korn. For those of you who don't know, Korn has been around for some time and is certainly not known for conveying a Christian message in their music. The majority of it is the usual mainstream rock stuff; disobeying authority, drugs, and alcohol among other things. This video amazed me as it shows how God can truly use "the least of these", the one's you would never suspect, to deliver His message. And this individual certainly has the testimony to deliver a special message to some who normally would turn their head when confronted with God, Jesus, and the church. Enjoy, go to the site, watch the other videos, and then ask yourself who is first in your life...Until next time

God Bless,
Michael & Sheena

Remembering...

noreply@blogger.com (Michael & Sheena Brown) — Mon, 30 May 2011 13:30:00 +0000

Hello, friends...today we get together with family and friends, fire up the grill, play backyard games, and enjoy a much earned day off work. But, just like Christmas, sometimes we forget the 'reason for the season.' Today there are thousands of brave men and women who aren't with their families and friends, who are in strange places that do not at all resemble home, and they do it all for us...and have been doing it for years. They give all and ask for nothing in return but the honor of bravely serving to defend freedom and the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness around the world. So today don't forget to say a short prayer (or a long one:) for all of our soldiers, foreign and domestic, active and reserve, the veterans, and all of their families.

From Sheena Brown Photography we wish everyone a safe and happy Memorial Day! And to the brave warriors who ensure our continued freedom....THANK YOU!!! And may God Bless you and your safe return!

God Bless,
Michael & Sheena

Congratulations Destiny & Joey!

A few weeks ago I got the chance to meet up with one of my very dear friends and her new fiancée to do their engagement portrait session. We had so much fun and I believe that the photos really show it! Congratulations to the both of you! I hope you have many years with lots of love and happiness!

Here are a few of my personal favorites of their session....

Another Salute to our Soldiers and Their Families

noreply@blogger.com (Michael & Sheena Brown) — Wed, 30 Mar 2011 13:00:00 +0000

I recently stumbled across the website http://welcomehomeblog.com/ and had to share it. I never get enough of watching these videos. So many leave everything behind to go away and defend freedom around the world. EVERY soldier deserves these types of homecomings. God Bless our troops, the greatest military in the world!

And a friendly reminder...have the Kleenex box handy (the one's with the little kids get me every time :)

Let's try this again...

noreply@blogger.com (Michael & Sheena Brown) — Mon, 14 Feb 2011 03:29:00 +0000

Ok, so we know...we're terrible bloggers! No posts in six months??? What on earth have we been doing? Well, to be perfectly honest we've been very busy. My lovely wife lost track of her schedule and took on a few more jobs than we had the capacity to handle (and had the audacity to do it right at the heart of deer season!). But that's all going to change. We're finally caught up except for one special project we need to finish and we can get back to nursing our little baby business. So now we start a new year which leads to new opportunities. In the coming weeks we will be rolling out a new referral incentive program, some exciting events for the year, and, as we will be rolling out a new product offering/pricing structure, a limited time discount toward the new pricing for those of you looking to book a session at any time this year. But more to come on that. There might even be more frequent blog posts as I believe I've finally talked my spouse into embracing the whole blog thing. For now we offer you a slideshow with some of our favorite images of 2010. Enjoy and as always, God Bless!

And now...The Brady Bunch (aka Tim & Renee Fisher Family)

noreply@blogger.com (Michael & Sheena Brown) — Mon, 26 Jul 2010 03:17:00 +0000

After the fabulous wedding we had the pleasure of photographing, we were given the opportunity to photograph the new, very large, and happy family of Tim & Renee Fisher. These are two truly beautiful people and we feel very blessed to call them friends!

Showing the love!

The bro's.

Must See...Have Your Kleenex Box Handy

noreply@blogger.com (Michael & Sheena Brown) — Mon, 28 Jun 2010 13:00:00 +0000

I found this while killing time at totalaxxess.com (I was supposed to be paying bills...yuk) and just had to share it. Now, very much unlike Sheena, I am not an overly emotional person...except when it comes to my kids. But this even made me sniffle a time or two. This is from www.tangle.com...kinda like YouTube for Christians. After you watch this be sure and check out the other videos they have.

God Bless Our Troops!!!

And now we present to you...

noreply@blogger.com (Michael & Sheena Brown) — Sun, 27 Jun 2010 13:30:00 +0000

Mr. and Mrs. Allan Summerfield!

Today our family got a little bigger as we added a brother in law and his large family to our clan. June 26, 2010 marked the day when our sister Shera Lawrence (of American Idol fame) and Alan Summerfield (soon to be the next Michael Waddell...Google it for you non-hunters out there) were joined together in Holy Matrimony. It was a beautiful ceremony and the perfect way to start a lifelong journey together.

Alan & Shera, we love you both very much and pray that God grants you both many years of happiness together. May your hearts remain soft, your love remain strong, and your faith never die!

Below are a few pictures from an engagement shoot Sheena did for the happy couple. They are truly two beautiful people. But always remember, no matter what, your babies will never be cuter than ours :)

Memorial Day Followup

noreply@blogger.com (Michael & Sheena Brown) — Sun, 06 Jun 2010 23:49:00 +0000

To those of you who were expecting a special slideshow to honor our military personnel on Memorial Day, as you already know, we were not able to create and post anything as we had promised. We apologize for this as we really wanted to do something to honor our military. Unfortunately we did not receive enough pictures to make a slideshow (we actually only received 3). Not to be deterred, we scoured the internet in search of images of military personnel, conflict photos, basically anything we could find. Again, unfortunately, there must be quite a marketplace for these type of pictures as just about everything we found came with a price tag :(

With that we would still like to keep the invitation open to send us photos of your friends, family, yourself, or anyone who is active or retired. We are going to try this again for the 4th of July and this time we are determined to get something posted for our troops. Please help us out by sending us anything you have. Of course you will retain all copyright ownership of the images. We will only be using them for the slideshow. Thanks in advance.

God Bless,
Michael & Sheena

Summer Vacation and a Few Special Deals!

noreply@blogger.com (Michael & Sheena Brown) — Sun, 06 Jun 2010 23:42:00 +0000

We wanted to let all of our friends know that we are taking a little break during June and July to get caught up on pictures and get some much needed family time! We will be back in August ready to go full blast to work for you. Of course we will still be honoring all of our current bookings. Also, since Sheena has an inherent inability to say no to anything, if you have a once in a lifetime opportunity you would like us to capture in June or July (military family home on leave, out of town family visiting for a short time, etc), just give her a call and I'm sure she won't be able to say no.

With that said we would like to announce a couple of special deals we are initiating:

Effective immediately we will be offering a 10% discount off of all of our services and products to active military personnel. We feel that this is the least we can do to honor and help out our armed forces who risk their life on a daily basis so that we can enjoy the many freedoms we take for granted.
Military Wives (or husbands) - This applies to you as well...we would love to provide you with photographs of yourself, your children, or both so that you can share a little taste of home with your loved one who is in a distant land. Imagine his or her surprise and delight when they receive professional quality images in the mail to cherish and show off to their fellow servicemen and women. Just give us a call and mention our military discount when booking. We can also upload your custom slideshow to the web so that he or she can enjoy it while deployed.
We are also accepting appointments for Fall Portrait Sessions. Aside from spring, there is no better time to capture your family alongside the beauty of God's creation. As an added incentive all portrait sessions for September, October, and November booked on or before July 9, 2010 will include a 20% discount off of any portrait order totaling $200 - $299 or 30% off of any portrait order totaling $300 or more. If you are interested give Sheena a call at 270-791-2175 or you can e-mail us at contact@sheenabrownphotography.com. Please don't delay as the available slots will fill up fast!

God Bless,
Michael & Sheena

Calling All Active Military, Veterans, and Families of Veterans

noreply@blogger.com (Michael & Sheena Brown) — Thu, 27 May 2010 02:07:00 +0000

To honor all of our brave military men and women who are serving or have served for our country, we would like to create a slideshow which will be displayed on our blog for Memorial Day. But we need your help! We are asking that you send us any and all photos you have of active duty soldiers or veterans. The more the merrier as we would like to create something big to show our love and support for all of those who are and who have sacrificed for our great nation. Please send anything you have to contact@sheenabrownphotography.com by Saturday, May 29 (yeah, we know, short notice) so that we can have the slideshow ready to go up on Monday. Thanks in advance for anything you can send as we really want to make this happen.

God Bless,
Michael & Sheena

Lydia Barks Senior 2010

noreply@blogger.com (Michael & Sheena Brown) — Thu, 13 May 2010 00:59:00 +0000

We finally finished with Lydia Barks' Senior pics and we are very pleased with how they turned out! We love all of our models but Lydia certainly made creating awesome looking pictures very easy. Below is a sampling and the full shoot can be found on our Facebook page. Thanks, Lydia, for letting us take these special pictures for you and we hope you enjoy them!

Tools of the Trade

noreply@blogger.com (Michael & Sheena Brown) — Tue, 27 Apr 2010 02:35:00 +0000

Ok, so when we first started this blog, we said that it wouldn't all be about sharing pictures. So...it's time to live up to that promise.

One of the most frequent questions we are asked is what tools or software we use to create our awesome, spectacular, truly brilliant images. Ok, maybe it's not exactly stated like that but you get the point. So with this post we are going to give full disclosure on everything we use, how we use it, and why we use it. Or something like that.

Let's begin with a bit of history. When we started this thing we had a Canon S5 (I think), a flash, and big dreams. We thought hey, we'll start taking picture professionally, how hard can it be? Ok, the long pause there was me picking myself up from falling out of the chair with laughter. Looking back IT'S NOT THAT EASY!!!! Not to discourage any aspiring photographers but we had no idea what we were getting into. So anyway, with that said, click on the link below to see the official, quintessential list of what we use to do what we do (in no particular order):

Computer Hardware

Mega powerful computer with loads of RAM and hard drive space (in other words, expensive)
Very big, high quality monitor because, of course, a regular monitor won't display colors accurately and you'll end up with prints back from the lab that look nothing like what you wanted.
Monitor color calibration device to again ensure that what you see on the screen is what you'll get back from the lab. We use the Eye-One Display 2 from Gretag Macbeth.
Pen based input tablet because trying to use a mouse to brush away great-aunt Trudy's ~~wrinkles~~ experience lines will leave you with wrist cramps and a strong urge to throw the aforementioned mouse out the window. We use the Intuos 3 tablet from Wacom.
Highly secure backup device since, if and when your hard drive crashes, all those pictures aren't coming back...and that's a bad thing. We use a Lacie d2 Quadra with two 500GB drives running in a redundant Raid configuration. In plain english this just means that a duplicate backup is created simultaneously on each drive so that, if one drive goes out, the other still has all of the data.

Computer Software

Something to organize and manage all of the Raw (or jpeg, we prefer Raw) files your going to have. We use Adobe Photoshop Lightroom as it's a great tool to do everything mentioned above plus much more.
Image enhancement software. This is the stuff that makes great-aunt Trudy look like she's ready for her high school prom again. The de facto standard is Adobe Photoshop which is what we use. Extremely powerful but not for the faint of heart!
Unless you want to spend hours and days on end in Photoshop, you're going to want some plug-ins (which of course aren't free). These take the power of Photoshop to a new level by automating certain tasks giving you many more options and making you much more efficient. We use Viveza and ColorEfex Pro both from Nik Software, the Plugin Suite from On One Software, and Noiseware Professional from Imagenomic.
Lots and lots of books, videos, and time in front of the computer to learn how to use all of this stuff. Anything powerful is not user friendly and this stuff is no exception.

Photography Equipment
So now we finally get into the meat and potatoes. If you have a very rare gift for photography first of all I'm very jealous. Secondly most of the stuff mentioned above won't be required. All that you will need is some or all of the tools listed below and you'll be on your way. However, if you're like the other 99.99% of the population, you will need some of the tools mentioned above. Now to the equipment list:

Somewhat high quality DSLR camera. The best is not a requirement but it really needs to have the ability to accept a variety of lenses, accept an external flash, and have a relatively high quality sensor inside. Expect to spend at least $800 to $1000. We use a Nikon D80.
The best quality lenses (which you'll want to call 'glass' if you want to be a true profession...lol). Arguably, the quality of your lenses is really more important than the quality of your camera. Lenses can cost anywhere from $100 up to many thousands of dollars. As always in life, you get what you pay for but there are ways to save a little. If you own a Nikon camera you don't have to use Nikon lenses. Similarly, if you own a Canon, you don't have to use Canon lenses. There are a few other vendors who make lenses which can be used on these cameras at a much reduced cost. You will sacrifice a little bit of quality but, unless you're doing work for Cosmo or something, you'll probably never notice the difference. Some of these are Tamron, Sigma, and Tokina. There's many more out there but these are the only ones I would trust.
Flashes, flashes, and more flashes. Big flashes, small flashes, round flashes, square flashes, strong flashes, weak flashes, and flashes that go boom! Ok, got a little Dr. Seussy there. The point is, aside from a photographer's ability to naturally find the perfect location and pose, the proper control of lighting is absolutely critical to getting good pictures. I won't get too in depth here because I could write all night on lighting (maybe in a future post), but flashes and the ability to properly use them is to photography what calculus is to math. We currently have two Nikon SB-800 flash units and are looking to purchase more.
All of the other stuff. This will include a high quality tripod and head, stands for your lights, adapters to connect your flashes to your stands, backdrops, lots and lots of backdrops, a backdrop stand, light modifiers to diffuse the harsh light from the flash (umbrellas, softboxes, etc.), enough batteries and spare batteries to power the sun, something to carry and protect all of this mega expensive gear, props, things to make children laugh and eventually smile (THIS IS CRITICAL), and candy for the kids who actually do smile WHILE you're taking the picture. Oh, and I almost forgot...more books, videos, and time in front of the computer.

And last, but certainly not least, a love for photography, people, and a strong faith in what you're doing. No matter how many shoots you do no two will ever be the same and each is nerve racking in it's own way. After that you have hours in front of the computer to look forward to. Then you get the luxury of getting all of the pictures exported, organized, and sent to the lab for processing. But the last part of the process makes it all worth it...seeing the emotions, the smiles, the laughs, and the tears when the final slideshow and prints are delivered to the client.

So that's it, friends. Photography in a nutshell. Feel free to leave us a comment to let us know what you think or if you have anything to add from your own experiences. Until next time...

God Bless,
Michael & Sheena

Mother & Daughter Day 2010

noreply@blogger.com (Michael & Sheena Brown) — Sat, 24 Apr 2010 23:55:00 +0000

And the results are finally in (or at least the pictures are done). Merle Norman Cosmetic Studios and Sheena Brown Photography would like to sincerely thank everyone who made our first annual Mother & Daughter Day event a huge success. We had a great time and we hope that you enjoyed the experience as much as we did!

For everyone who participated your complimentary prints are available for pickup at Merle Norman. Along with your pictures you will also find a special gift from us and a card which includes your unique username and password. You can use this to login to the special Mother Daughter day page accessible from our homepage at www.sheenabrownphotography.com. Here you can view all of the images from your session. Should you choose to order any additional prints instructions are included on the card with your username and password.

For those who did not have the opportunity to make it this time around or if you are considering taking part in our next event, we've included a sample of some of our favorite pictures from the day...or at least we tried to include our favorites. There was just one problem...we liked all of the pictures so much that, by the time we narrowed it down to what we thought were our favorites, we had included every picture :). So we decided instead to include a somewhat random sampling from the day.

We would like to include a special mention to our resident supermodels for the day shown immediately below. These three lovely ladies were absolutely a treat to photograph. Of course at first they tried to be humble as to not show up all the other ladies but we saw through their games and, after a little coaxing, they showed us what true professionals can do in front of a camera.

More pictures from the day can be seen by clicking the link below the pictures.

God Bless,
Michael & Sheena

If anyone out there doesn't believe in God then one look into this little angel's eyes should make them a believer! We had a great time photographing this little cutie and this session came with an extra added bonus...she rolled over for her first time and we got every step of it in a sequence of 3 pictures. Talk about capturing memories! Below is a sample. See more of our favorites by clicking the link below the picture.

What's in a name?

noreply@blogger.com (Michael & Sheena Brown) — Thu, 01 Apr 2010 03:38:00 +0000

Last week Sheena and I came upon quite the conundrum (yeah I know, big word). We needed to order some business cards and decided that we needed a slogan to put on them. The ensuing debate was nothing short of a classic Perry Mason show. We couldn't decide on anything and everything we came up with sounded 'cheesy' and just didn't represent the message we wanted to get out about who we are. Then we figured out we didn't really know who we are. (Of course I've been trying to figure Sheena out for almost 7 years now. It's mostly like working a million piece jigsaw puzzle without knowing what the end result is supposed to look like. But I digress...)

Click below to read more...

So anyway we decided to analyze our business, what we have to offer, and the image we want our actions to portray. Here is the results of our 'self-analysis':

We offer high-end photography at exceptional value (but lots of people do that)
We are very flexible with our shooting location. In addition to the numerous locations we already have picked out, we will go to any place of your choosing for your session (within reason). Or we will welcome you into our studio (aka home for now) to shoot with backdrops and/or props. We will even come into your home to shoot you in your most familiar of environments. Basically you can come to us or we will come to you at no extra charge.
We strive to make sure that you get exactly what you want. If none of our standard print packages meet your needs, we will work with you to come up with a solution. If your child is having a bad day and just won't cooperate or if we're shooting outside and the sun just won't play along to make the perfect lighting or if you're just having a bad hair day...whatever the reason, if we can't get at least twenty good shots that we are happy with in the time allotted, we will schedule a re-shoot at no additional cost. We will not stop until you're happy!
If you're at all not satisfied with any of your finished prints we will either re-order them or provide you with a full refund.
Every session includes a custom DVD slide show set to music for you to keep and enjoy forever. No two slide shows are ever the same as each is custom crafted and formatted just for you.
Every picture that is included in the slide show and that is available for you to order is meticulously studied and retouched using the latest in digital technology to ensure that every aspect of the final image captures the character and mood of the moment. After each picture has been retouched we go back through them and pick out some of our favorites to 'play' with. This is where the experience gets personal. The original picture is further modified to either enhance or alter the mood of the moment. This might be via black and white conversion, sepia conversion, selective color painting, or any combination of many other methods to provide a true piece of art. We will also create some custom presentations straight from our unique and crazy minds :)
No one sees any of your photos until you do. When everything has been retouched and the slide show created, we will invite you into our home to view your custom slide show, look through your digital proofs, and place your order. This is the best part for us as we love to share in the moment and watch your reactions to the images. There's generally a little laughter, maybe a few tears, but a good time is guaranteed.
After you have seen your photos and had a chance to place your order, we will post the pictures on our Facebook page (and maybe this blog) for you to share with all of your friends and family.
Your finished photos are printed by a professional photo lab on the highest quality papers using archival quality ink. Translated...this means that, with the proper care, in 100 years your photos will look just like they do today. If you have ever printed photos yourself at home or gotten some from (with all due respect) a bargain photo shop, you will notice that, after around 5-7 years, they start to slightly fade. After about 10-15 years they are really fading and they start to take on a 'funny' color. Your prints will not do this....guaranteed.

We reviewed all of this and then it hit us. We capture memories. But it's more than that. We capture memories and then pour our hearts into them until they are nothing less than perfect. These memories are then taken to your home to be proudly displayed and enjoyed for many years to come. Out of all of this came a single sentence that we believe sums up who we are, what we do, and what we have to offer...Sheena Brown Photography - Memories...From Our Heart to Your Home. So tell us what you think. We love criticism both good and bad. Until next time...

God Bless,
Michael & Sheena

Beginnings...

noreply@blogger.com (Michael & Sheena Brown) — Mon, 29 Mar 2010 04:50:00 +0000

Welcome to the officially official blog of Sheena Brown Photography. We want this to be a somewhat unique experience relative to other photography studio blogs in that our posts will be about more than just pictures. Of course there will be pictures (probably lots of them :) but it will also contain a personal element. First of all, as Sheena Brown Photography is not just Sheena Brown (yes, there is a Mr. Sheena Brown), the posts could come from either Michael or Sheena. Whenever one of us has something on our mind, new pictures, or other content such as photography or Photoshop tips, it'll get posted. So subscribe or check back often as you never know what you might find!

The title of this post has a double meaning. Of course it's the beginning of our blogging experience but it's also about another beginning. We recently had the pleasure of photographing the wedding of Tim and Renee Fisher (see, I told you there'd be pictures) and, like all of our clients, gained a couple of new friends. The wedding was beautiful and we are really happy with how the photos turned out but that's not the end of the story. It's our policy that nobody gets to see the pictures from a photo session until the client has come to our studio (aka our home) and viewed their custom slideshow. This is absolutely our favorite part of the whole experience. Getting to reminisce on the day and seeing the reaction from the new couple, mother, or family is totally priceless. That brings us back to our evening with Tim and Renee. Not only did we have a great time looking at the album and viewing the slide show (and of course there were tears, that really lets us know we did a good job) we had a blast and really got to know both of them. We talked, shared stories, Tim got a preview of his future as a grandfather with our little Amelya (just hit me, should have gotten pictures of that), we watched some basketball, oh, and did I mention we talked :) Anyway, after somewhere around 2 hours it became totally apparent to us (or maybe just me because Sheena already knew them and I was just meeting them) that God has truly brought these two beautiful people together. The trials and tribulations that they have made it through TOGETHER should stand as an example to the kind of devotion and true love that God expects when a man and a woman are joined together as one.

Tim and Renee, we thank you for allowing us to share in your special day and we pray for nothing but the best for both of you in the years to come...and we're also looking forward to our couples, no children allowed date night :) And now, as promised, a sampling of some of our favorite pictures from the wedding.

God Bless,
Michael
