Glitz and glitter have their place but when you’re looking for classic finishing touches for your home this Christmas, why not take a break from anything too glam and opt instead for natural plants, flowers and foliage.

Everyone has their seasonal favourites, from traditional potted poinsettias and delicate cyclamen to bouquets of roses in white and red as well as pine cones, berries, ivy and mistletoe. Used carefully, they help to add fragrance, colour and texture to any space in the home, from the all-important living and dining rooms to the hub of it all – the kitchen – plus bedrooms, hallways and the entrance porch.

The secret to a cosy bonfire night feast is all in the serving. Humble sausages are revived for an autumnal feast when served in a hollowed out marrow or in your recycled Halloween pumpkin (for recessionista entertaining).

And who says you can’t dot a few around the garden (no scary faces – just little holes or stars), filled with tea lights? Little lanterns also work a treat to create a cosy ambience where a bonfire isn’t possible.

Hand guests newspaper cones filled with roast chestnuts and huge blankets whilst they wait for their baked potato to crisp up on the bonfire (serve with a hearty chilli straight from the oven to warm the cockles).

As for the tipple of choice, homemade mulled wine is a no-brainer – just add a generous helping of cinnamon sticks and cloves to a full-bodied Cab Sauv and simmer with water, sugar and honey for 20 minutes.

Nothing makes one feel more like a goddess than an indulgent beauty treatment, but it needn’t cost a fortune – make your own and not only will you save the pennies, but you’ll know for sure that it hasn’t been tested on animals, doesn't contain lots of parabens and hasn't been packaged up to the hilt leaving carbon footprints in your wake.

Here's our pick of the best homemade concoctions...

1. Seeing as honey and the plight of the humble bee is in the news so much there’s nothing better than supporting your local honey producer and making a face mask out of it.

Simply combine a dollop of honey with cooked, mashed carrots, apply to the face, and wash it all off after ten minutes. We just love Daylesford Organic’s Manuka Honey, which has known healing properties, and once you’ve made your mask, you can have a sneaky spoonful without feeling too guilty!

Alternatively, if you want your mask to exfoliate too, simply add some ground almonds with some unrolled oats. Good enough to eat!

2. If you want to beautify yourself with something a little less sticky then head down the natural yoghurt route.

Yogurt isn’t only for breakfast but when a teaspoonful is mixed with one egg and a teaspoon of miraculous Vitamin E oil, it helps to firm skin as well as soothe it. (Leave on skin for 20 minutes before rinsing off.)

3. If you’re a bath lover, but don’t have time to wallow in the tub then treat yourself to a facial sauna, which cleans the pores and leaves you feel refreshed and ready to face the world.

Simply fill a bowl with near boiling water and add 4 drops of each of the essential oils recommended for your skin type (for normal skin, use Mandarin and Lavender, if you have an oily complexion try Lemon and Eucalyptus, or if you suffer from dryness, opt for Rose & Camomile.

Place a towel over your head and hold it over the bowl from a distance of about 30cm for a period of around two minutes. This opens the pores and prepares it for a face mask. (You shouldn’t use a face sauna if you have sensitive skin, are pregnant or suffer from asthma.)

4. Now, we all know that pre: self-tan, the rule is: exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate! To make your own scrub, dry the skin of avocados for 3-5 days, once dry grind into very fine pieces (popping it in a sealed bag and hammering it should do the trick), and mix with crushed bananas to make a thick paste. Rub gently over skin, and rinse off.

5. Lastly for a super quick fix, simply soak yellowed nails (the product of an addiction to nail polishes in summer brights!) in water with lemon juice or lemon slices et voila! Bright, healthy-looking nails.

After all, as much as we domestic goddesses love to host dinner parties and make our homes beautiful, sometimes it’s time for some ‘me’ time. Forgo the tidying up for just one day and treat yourself to a treatment instead of a new pair of rubber gloves!

Plant your Thyme in amongst the Rosemary to add bulk and depth to your herb garden but not so close that the Rosemary will eventually block out any sunlight that the Thyme may receive.

If you’re creating the whole of your herb garden in pots you’ll begin to learn whereabouts the herbs do best and you may even shift them about from time to time (or thyme to thyme, if you insist!).

After you've planted these herbs it’s your job to keep an eye on them, granted, but they're pretty independent chaps, and will fill your home, garden and recipes with fragrance, flavour and delight!

Grease your previously heated frying pan using a small amount of the butter for each pancake and add a ladle of the batter for each pancake. Keep an eye on the underside to prevent one side from burning and then flip or, if you’re brave, toss the pancake to turn it. A warning - cast iron Le Creuset pans are far too heavy for those types of shenanigans and you don’t want to break your wrist or toe whilst flipping!

As pictured, you can add frozen summer fruits to the pancakes, but you may also want to try:

- Ice cream and dusted cinnamon sugar

Serve as a wintry Eton Mess style pud with chocolate ice-cream, a wee bit of brandy butter, toasted almonds, a drop of brandy and some meringue to add texture. Decadent? Yes, but NOT wasteful!

Christmas pud is delicious fried. Try it and you might just be surprised. Or crumble it in to a simple chocolate cheese cake recipe and add a splash of brandy.

Finally use all those cheese biscuits that weren’t touched as the basis for meatballs, chocolate biscuits as the crumb for non-bake cheesecake and the crumbly bits of biscotti as the bottom layer of an Italian trifle.

And, for a non food related way to not waste and a great time filler for little people, gather up all those Christmas cards , which can be used to make tags for next year. You will need:
14/15 apples
a knitting needle
a wire hanger
x2 lengths of contrasting ribbon approx 12" in length
(find a vast selection of ribbon at VV Rouleaux)

• Take each apple and carefully poke the knitting needle through its middle. Do it slowly, working it through rather than just prodding.
