The book documents the thesis presentations of a group of graduate design degree candidates. Each photograph in the book is sized according the the length of time it was visible in an individual's presentation. 1 second = .5 square inches. The resulting foredge of the book is subtly striking and thought provoking.

Canada Type

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 160px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_AFGxUp-GL4Q/ShrHxO2EeXI/AAAAAAAAAU0/ArmeNVTuSDk/s320/memoriam1.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5339799956813543794" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 160px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_AFGxUp-GL4Q/ShrG6IaPmII/AAAAAAAAAUk/UutLgdGptJ0/s320/memoriam2.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5339799010193414274" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 83px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_AFGxUp-GL4Q/ShrGye0YPiI/AAAAAAAAAUc/2Bcjbk7qtAc/s320/glyphs_memoriam2.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5339798878769659426" />
I've been doing some research on type for an upcoming wedding invitation I'm designing and printing letterpress, and came across the stunning digital typography of Canada Type. They often revive mid twentieth century faces, which is perfect for my client's taste. What I love about many of their faces is how many alternates they create. Where a typical digital font might contain 250 or so glyphs, some typefaces from Canada Type include 650 glyphs. Each capital might have 3 or 4 variations. The effect is killer--a single word could have many different iterations, simply by swapping out a letter for one of its alternate forms. As much as we all love metal type, the flexibility of digital type and printing with photopolymer or metal plates give a letterpress printer so many options.

See the above font called Memoriam. With those thin hairlines, I think this could look great printed with the letterpress and I can't wait to try it.

Jennie Nayton

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 243px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_AFGxUp-GL4Q/Shas5rkuojI/AAAAAAAAAUU/AEX8dL2FmeY/s320/papercutting_breathe1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5338644515243598386" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 298px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_AFGxUp-GL4Q/Shasva21aII/AAAAAAAAAUM/-SpgFKJy2Zo/s320/papercutting_breathe2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5338644338957445250" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 271px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_AFGxUp-GL4Q/ShasclR0_xI/AAAAAAAAAUE/euAC36XKSnE/s320/papercutting_cloud1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5338644015337504530" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 206px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_AFGxUp-GL4Q/ShasS7hD1RI/AAAAAAAAAT8/DyDSS_d-kq8/s320/nayton_book.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5338643849508279570" />
Cut paper photographs, books and installations by Australian artist Jennie Nayton. Alas, I did not have time to take a picture of the work itself, but I was very pleased with the format I came up with and will be making more work like it in the future. For the past year I have been thinking about book hybrids--the piece I sent can be displayed like a book or hung on the wall.

Matt Shlian

Matt Shlian's paper engineering is both informed by and contributes to scientific understanding. I found this work by Anna Hepler. The floor project was done with students from Bowdoin College. A football field-sized room. Stacks of onionskin paper held up high, mechanically releasing one leaf at a time, drifting down. Large bullhorns shifting around the space, moving slowly up and down, speaking in a robotic voice. Figures (us!) shuffling through white crackly mounds of paper. Windows letting in pink light.

Literally 7 million 8.5 x 11 sheets of paper fell over the course of the installation.

"Gallerygoers apparently get the idea, spending around 20 minutes with ''Corpus,'' 19 minutes longer than people typically spend with one work of art"--NYTimes

Photo 1 from flickr user kellan, photo 2 from takomabibelot, photo 3 from shanevsevil, photo 4 from travisqclark, photo 5 from nogang

Noriko Ambe

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 173px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_AFGxUp-GL4Q/SdYzSfoH9vI/AAAAAAAAAPU/mPJtLB6VvNA/s320/noriko_cutting_book1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5320496402605274866" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 301px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_AFGxUp-GL4Q/SdYzMldQlwI/AAAAAAAAAPM/MAYyfswiE24/s320/noriko_cutting_book2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5320496301091100418" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 151px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_AFGxUp-GL4Q/SdYzEPl_WZI/AAAAAAAAAPE/o_k4Svng9k4/s320/noriko_cutting_book3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5320496157783185810" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 242px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_AFGxUp-GL4Q/SdYy-agqzJI/AAAAAAAAAO8/TtmA15qAa0I/s320/noriko_cutting_book4.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5320496057634442386" />
There have been quite alot of artists lately who alter books through cutting. I like this series by Noriko Ambe because it not only seems to be about the look of the pieces but takes the cutting a step further into self-investigation. This altering of Ed Ruscha's book illustrates, to me, an artist who is both acknowledging the historical significance of Ed Ruscha's work in the book format as well as challenging it. I constructed 70 plate books and 20 boxes to house the books. In addition to the plate book acting as a way to house a single photogravure plate along with its print, it also acts as a display device. The owner/collector can take a single work out, display it, and then put it safely away. This is a great solution to displaying any kind of two-dimensional artwork. The plate books themselves have a few unique features that you do not see in traditional binding. First, the core board is not book board but a .040 sheet of aluminum. I will be doing a future blog post about how to use metal in this manner. Second feature is the spine material--a saturated felt spine. It is very strong and very flexible. Third interesting feature is that everything except the labels and the plates went on dry, with various drymount adhesives. I have to thank Daniel Kelm for exposing me to all of these methods! I actually worked on the prototype for this structure while working for Dan at the Wide Awake Garage. Many book artists do exactly this. Their medium is book and text. Jefferson's Bible reminded me first of the most well-known example of what is called an "altered text": A Humument by Tom Philips. In that work, the artist drew on and blocked out words in a victorian novel so that a new narrative emerged.

I went on a hunt to find images of the Jefferson Bible and was AGAIN blown away to see these stunning pictures from Alexandria Searls, a photographer who beautifully captures Jefferson's actual cut-up Bibles which are preserved (thank goodness) at his home in Monticello. I haven't found any images yet of the book in which he pasted the passages, though I believe he did publish his version of the Bible which you can now purchase via Amazon. of course.

You can see the full exhibit of Alexandria Searls' photographs of the cut-up Bible at the Monticello website. Alexandria graciously allowed me to publish a few here on the blog.

Just came across this other blog post on more cut-up texts http://blog.whitneyannetrettien.com/2009/03/thomas-jefferons-cut-up-bible.html. cool.

Sneak Peak--What I've been Working On

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_AFGxUp-GL4Q/SalhUu4zMdI/AAAAAAAAAKQ/5mni8iRTht0/s320/21st2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5307880644644385234" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_AFGxUp-GL4Q/SalhK92wO4I/AAAAAAAAAKI/-hYG93j2Sho/s320/21st3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5307880476863642498" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_AFGxUp-GL4Q/Salg_ZnCxPI/AAAAAAAAAKA/iZOVcSFQ0Qs/s320/21st4.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5307880278155511026" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_AFGxUp-GL4Q/Salg55t7hnI/AAAAAAAAAJ4/NKbXbk-8n3s/s320/21st5.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5307880183695115890" />
I've been working on an edition for the past 6 months or so. It's been a great project with interesting challenges. I'm finishing it up this week!! Here are some pictures that show a tiny snippet of the process. There are approximately 70 nickel-plated photogravure plates which go into individual hardcover book-like structures which I created and built. These shots show one of the metal plates being glued up and placed into the "book". Opposite the plate sits the exquisite photogravure print which came from the plate itself. I'll post more shots of this project soon. Gary Frost developed this structure and it is incredibly beautiful both in the way it functions and its clean aesthetic. The boards are made from a stiffer, 20 pt card that are folded and sewn on just like another signature in the book (this is what you see as tan in the above photos). Once the textblock is completely sewn, you can insert another stiff card in the folio (this is the black area inserted between the tan sections). These three layers act as the boards for the book, which is then covered with three separate pieces of either paper/cloth/leather.

I believe the original structure was developed as a conservation binding, to re-sew and preserve older books. But Gary Frost also mentions that it is a good structure for edition binding. You can read more about this binding at Gary Frost's website.

Codex Symposium

The second Codex Symposium and Book Fair is scheduled for February 9-11 at UC Berkeley.
