June 8th, 2013, by Patrick An amazing hippo combat at the hippo-hide we watched yesterday when we were at the hippo-hide with the guests. We watched the same two bulls engaging into a fight two days ago when we were building the hippo-hide extension & they fought for over ten minutes. Unfortunately that time I didn’t have my camera with me to capture any picture of the fight. However, two days later we went back to the hide & I had my camera with me this time, luckily they fought again & we managed to get some good photos. We were so lucky to see this because it doesn’t happen very often. I guess we will see more of the hippos fighting this year because of the low level of water in the river due to the limited rains we’ve had.
Travel Insurance and Medical Evacuation

If you ever wondered why you should subscribe to a travel insurance before heading on a trip, this article may help you make a wise decision. Article by Kathy Moroney, from the International Association for Travel To Africa “Would you like travel insurance?” “How would you like to pay for your travel insurance?” “We’ve included travel insurance as part of the package.” These and other such statements are probably ones that you’ve heard many times. Many clients decline the purchase of travel insurance, though, thinking that they have no plans to cancel. Travel professionals usually get a signed waiver by those clients who decline the insurance. But there are really two components to the insurance discussion that should go on with you. The first, and what travellers usually think about, is the trip interruption/cancellation part of insurance. If the client thinks that they can afford to lose their prepaid purchases in case of trip interruption or cancellation, then that is their choice. But the second component deals with purchasing insurance without trip interruption/cancellation coverage. This would protect the traveller for medical, medical evacuation, trip delay, baggage delay, baggage loss, and other possible aspects of travel. Surprisingly, insurance without the trip interruption/cancellation included is very affordable, by making it a zero cost trip. Even with the low cost, many travellers think that the need for these kinds of insurance “can’t happen to me”. A look at just one aspect—medical evacuation—was done by Travel Agent Magazine. The article suggests that travellers might want to read about a real-life experience without medical evacuation insurance. Although this article (open the link above) describes a travel tragedy away from civilization, the need for medical evacuation insurance could just as easily arise from a broken hip, a heart attack, thrombosis during a flight, or other unforeseen occurrences occurring nearer to cities. The emergency medical evacuation insurance coverage provides benefits payable up to the policy limit if the insured suffers a medical emergency and requires transportation. It’s important to understand that this coverage is not medical coverage. Instead, it is coverage for medically necessary transportation. Based on a survey of travel insurance providers, it’s recommended that travellers have between $50,000 and $250,000 USD. in medical evacuation coverage. But there are many other unplanned things that can happen on a trip. • Luggage is lost and not located for five days. • Due to a late arrival, the client misses a connection. • The flight is cancelled for over 12 hours and not-rebooked. • Getting ill with the flu and needing to be hospitalized. Too many people don’t understand that they are responsible themselves for the unforeseen parts of travel, which WILL happen. This is important for any destination being considered, but especially so for Africa. The International Association for Travel to Africa, LLC was founded by Kathy Moroney. Moroney has been a travel consultant from 1990-2011. Her travel agency, Distinctive Destinations, was formed in 2004 with an emphasis on travel to Africa. In the same year she and several colleagues started the Sacramento Valley chapter of APTA—the Association for the Promotion of Tourism to Africa, where Moroney served six years as president. A member of APTA, ASTA, and NACTA, Moroney is a long-time advocate of continuing education and supporting fellow colleagues. She’s personally been to more than 16 African countries, some numerous times, and has the utmost respect and admiration for the people of Africa.

The post Travel Insurance and Medical Evacuation appeared first on Shenton Safaris' Blog: Photographic Safaris and much more....

Want to get more involved? The library at Mfuwe Day Secondary School is complete bar from the shelving and in a couple of weeks we will need someone to help the school librarian catalogue all the books kindly donated by I know it is short notice but we were unsure of the completion date having had a few delays. Is there a librarian out there twiddling their thumbs and wondering what to do with themselves? Throughout the year Project Luangwa’s new Reading Scheme needs volunteers to go into the schools with books from our Amazon Wish List. The idea is that you take a set of books and a book bag containing all the props needed to tell the story such as glove puppets, plastic fruit or whatever is featured in the story. By telling and retelling the story in different ways and getting the kids involved with acting it out, drawing pictures and even reading if they are able we hope to improve their reading skills and English. Aside from the Reading Scheme we need qualified teachers to help with teaching through Happy Readers books and TEFL teachers for older kids and adults. Volunteers need to be self-funded and if you are interested please send an email to volunteer@projectluangwa.org 44,000 . . . . . . is the estimated number of books needed to fill the half a kilometre of bookshelves currently being made for the new library we have built at Mfuwe Day Secondary School. We have already had some great donations and our thanks to the Richardsons and Jill Stewart in Canada, Agincourt and Elmtree Schools in the UK, David Scott and Isaac Kapambwe of the NPAC and all the kind donors who have brought books out in their suitcases or sent them through Pilot Post. If you would like to bring any up to date reference books or suitable novels in that spare corner of your travel bag we’d love to take them off your hands when you get here. If you can fill a bag then we can arrange for them to be brought to Mfuwe from Lusaka airport free of charge. If you live in the UK and can collect a good number of books we can arrange free shipping to Mfuwe. Email for more details. Thank you everyone.
