In a world where travel is affordable, jobs are disposable and overseas friends are just a mouse-click away, it’s easy to become lured by the greener grass of ‘elsewhere’, thinking that our fulfillment lies in the next job we take, house we buy, church we visit, or relationship we begin. If there’s one message I don’t want you to get from Resurrection Year it’s that you have to leave home to start again. Yes, part of Merryn’s and my Resurrection Year meant moving from Australia to the UK. But, we did that only after reading Jonathan’s book The Wisdom of Stability to make sure we weren’t running from our problems. On Christmas Day 2010, after ten years of pursuit, Merryn and I brought our dream of having a child to an end. In 2012, at the suggestion of a friend, I wrote that story into a book. On Tuesday May 28, 2013, that book Resurrection Year was released into the world. The comments above are just a fraction of those I’ve already received about it.

Something’s up. God seems to be redeeming the pain we experienced by using our story to help others.

• Marilynne’s first novel, Housekeeping, was released in 1980. Nominated for the Pulitzer Prize and winning the PEN/Hemingway Award for Best First Novel, its tale of Ruth and Lucille in the fictional town of Fingerbone, Idaho, has been hailed a classic.
• The second novel, Gilead, came a staggering 24-years later. Recounting the memories of a dying Reverend to his seven year old son, it went on to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.

‘It needs to be fun,’ she says.

‘And restful,’ I say.

‘And full of adventure,’ she adds.

‘With lots of beauty,’ I reply.

Our morning had begun with us trying to pray, but tears and sighs were all we could utter. We’d gone out to lunch, caught The King’s Speech at the cinema, and by the afternoon were starting to feel a bit brighter. Rays of light had broken through the clouds as we’d settled into our fold-out chairs with a glass of wine on the balcony. Now we’ve begun to dream about the future—to make the first tentative sketches of what a Resurrection Year might entail.

‘I feel dead inside,’ I say. ‘Lifeless. Numb. I want to get excited about something again. I want to resurrect my emotions.’

‘I want to resurrect my relationship with God,’ Merryn says. ‘He feels like an old friend who no longer returns my calls.’

We sit quietly for a bit, staring into our wine glasses. With their bowls full and resting in our palms they almost look like crystal balls. But they give away no secrets.

‘And you want to do this in Switzerland,’ I say.

‘I really do,’ Merryn says, with eagerness in her voice that I haven’t heard for some time. ‘One of the reasons I got into medi­cal research was because of the travel opportunities, and there are plenty of positions I could apply for in Switzerland right now—I’ve been watching the job boards. Just imagine living in Geneva or Berne. Imagine doing hikes in the Alps every week­end. We could drive to Italy, Germany or France, and England and Spain would only be a train trip away.’

‘That’s true,’ I say.

‘You’d have all the natural beauty your eyes could handle,’ she says. ‘Just imagine the photographs you could take.’

I think of my shiny new SLR camera sitting in the wardrobe. It had cost me a small fortune a year or two back but had gone largely unused since. I hadn’t had much energy for hobbies.

‘So, what do you think? How do you feel about living in Switzerland?’

How do I feel? I think to myself. I feel like this whole damn thing is a curse. I feel like I’m too exhausted to move countries, but that it’s too late to stay. I feel mad at God for not coming through for us and sad at losing what I’ve worked for. I feel like frantically holding on to what I have left, and like curling up in a corner and going to sleep for a while. And I feel guilty—guilty for putting you through this when another man could’ve given you what you desired. And I feel like the last thing I could do right now is deny you what you so dearly want.

‘I don’t think I can get excited about anything at the moment,’ I say. ‘But I want you to be happy. And I like hearing you getting excited about something again.’

Merryn reaches over and squeezes my hand.

‘I’m so sorry,’ I say.

‘For what?’ she says, surprised.

‘For being the cause of all this.’

Tears well in Merryn’s eyes. She puts down her glass, pulls her chair close, wraps her arms around my chest and presses her cheek into mine. ‘You’re the best husband a girl could want,’ she says. ‘Now let’s leave the past behind and have an adventure together.’

Adrian Plass‘s many books include the legendary Sacred Diary of Adrian Plass, Bacon Sandwiches and Salvation, Seriously Funny, Seriously Funny 2, Silences and Nonsenses, and the new Adrian Plass and the Church Weekend. Adrian has the capacity to make you laugh one moment and cry the next. Such is his power with words.

But there is something else I should tell you about Adrian.

A Personal Story

Here’s what I’ve written on the dedication page of my book Resurrection Year:

So I guess that should alert you that something is up between Adrian and me.

The interview you’re about to hear was recorded in 2001 while I was the morning show host at 98.5 Sonshine FM in Perth, Western Australia. It was my first time interviewing Adrian, who came into the studio live that morning ahead of a show that evening. As you’ll hear, the interview was a hoot.

So taken was I by Adrian and his wisdom that I quoted from that interview in the first edition of Unseen Footprints in 2005.

I moved to Sydney in 2006 to start the Open House radio show, and got to have my second interview with Adrian on that show in 2007. That conversation was so insightful the transcript was included in Open House Volume 1.

When Adrian released a book of his collected poems called Silences and Nonsenses in late 2010 I took the opportunity to have him on Open House again.

But this time something else happened.

After the interview Adrian and I chatted off-air. We had done that each time we’d spoken in the past but this time the conversation got personal. Merryn and I were in the latter months of what would be the toughest season of our lives. Adrian showed a genuine interest in the story, so I told him a little about our journey and how Merryn and I were desperately hoping to start 2011 afresh.

After listening carefully, Adrian said this:

‘In the Christian scheme of things, new beginnings come after the death of something, just as Jesus’ resurrection followed his crucifixion. After what you’ve just told me, I think a Resurrection Year is just what you need.’

A Resurrection Year.

Now you know who is responsible for the title of my next book.

Adrian and his wife Bridget have another important role to play in the Resurrection Year story – but I’ll leave you to read the book to find out what that is. (Truly, it would be giving too much away to tell you now!)

But I’ll never forget going home and telling Merryn what Adrian had said. She burst into tears – tears of relief. A Resurrection Year is just what she needed.

Why is God invisible? Why doesn’t he ‘appear’ in front of us? Even when he does appear, as he did plenty of times to the Israelites, he comes disguised as a pillar of cloud, a whisper, or a burning bush. Even Jesus – God in human form – wasn’t instantly recognisable after his resurrection. Why is so God hidden?

In short, God hides so we will seek him. He scatters a trail of breadcrumbs, enticing us to discover who scattered them.

In the Talk

In this talk, given at Oxford Community Church earlier this month, I draw from the stories of Mary Magdalene, Cleopas, Peter and Thomas who all have Jesus appear to them after his resurrection. Through them I explore:

• The two great questions of the sceptic: Why does God remain hidden? (‘If God would just appear in front of me, then I would believe’), and If God is good, why is there suffering? (‘If he wants to stop it but can’t, he’s not powerful. If he can but won’t, he’s not good.’)
• The fact that these are not just the questions of the sceptic, but often of the believer who is experiencing life’s ‘shadows’ – prolonged seasons of grief, disappointment, shame or doubt.
• A surprising twist to these questions. God’s hiddenness and our suffering turn out to be the very ways in which God reveals himself to us.

‘It took my mum about four months before she came to terms with [my condition]. My dad took the initiative to hold me first.’

Because it won’t jump if it can’t see where it’s feet will land. That’s like many of us: we won’t take a risky leap of faith unless we know beforehand where we’ll end up, and so we rarely experience the adventure that life with God is meant to bring.

In this talk, recorded at a community dinner held by St Phillips Christian College in Newcastle, Australia, for staff, students, parents and civic leaders, I retell the story of Abraham’s call to an ‘unknown land’, weaving in some personal experiences of my own to offer some lessons on what it means to hear the voice of God, walk by faith and live a life of adventure.

It’s funny… when you’re asked to speak somewhere you hope you’ll bring something beneficial to your audience. But since this talk was recorded I’ve moved from Australia to the UK, and I’ve found myself in need of this message personally. I’m having to put my (easy) words into (risky) practice once more.
