Having the right equipment for fly fishing is very important, just as it is with other, more popular sports. Brace yourself because you may have to spend a lot for the different types of equipment for fly fishing, but all of it should be worth the extra expense!

Of course, you'll need a rod and reel. The tricky part would be choosing a rod that matches the type of fish you wish to catch. When purchasing fly rods, take note of their net weight capabilities (nwt). The nwt number will tell you what type of fish you will be able to catch. For example, you would need an 8 nwt rod to catch fish that weigh around 8 pounds. The larger the nwt number, the larger fish you can catch.

Some rods are multi-rated (e.g. 7-9 nwt). When compared to single rated rods, these multi-rated rods can catch more types and weight classes of fish, but wouldn't be as flexible.

Generally speaking, rods can be made of fiberglass, graphite or bamboo. Fiberglass rods are durable and less expensive. Since they are versatile enough to be used in different settings, fiberglass rods are ideal for the novice fly fisherman. The advantage of graphite rods are the fact they are lightweight, and can help you angle heavier fish much easier. Bamboo rods can be expensive, but they are extremely strong and are suited to a more laid-back casting style.

Your fly line will need to match the nwt of your rod. If you have an 8 nwt rod, you'll need to use an 8 nwt line. But if you are not able to find the exact same net weight, going one or two sizes under or above is fine - say, 9 nwt or 7 nwt for the above example. Make quality a priority when choosing a fly line. Some lines are specially designed for freshwater, saltwater, etc.

Aside from the line and the rod, you'll need a net that is durable enough for your needs. You will need to scoop fish out of the water once they're down for the count, and a net would work just fine. A good net is essential in catching fish, because once they have been caught hook, line and sinker, the next thing you will want to do is make sure they are pulled out of the water.

Having the right fly fishing equipment is important for both the beginner as well as the experienced angler. Once you find yourself improving in this wonderful sport, you will realize the importance of having the right equipment. Whilst I can understand this type of mentality and agree with it i do think that a fishing chair should be included. Time and time again I have seen this however, believe me, the added joy that you get from the fishing experience with one is untrue. The cost of buying one is heavily outweighed by the benefit one gets. It is a 'no brainer' as they say.

What benefits do you get from a fishing chair?

Well, first and foremost, they are not hugely expensive. This is not something that is going to break the bank. Now relax and breath. But before you do think about how much ones of these chairs costs think not just from a cost perspective. Think more about value for money. Cost versus benefit. This is the basis on how you truly measure something of value.

Secondly they are made from light, strong material. They have a strapping system, just like a backpack has, that means you can carry them on your back easily. You will have both hands free to carry other fishing tackle. Very useful if you have parked your vehicle miles away from your fishing peg. Also useful if the terrain is unstable which is common along riverbanks.

Thirdly the material can be cleaned easily with soap and water and it is weatherproof, as you imagine it should be. Not much of a benefit I hear you say, however have a quick think about it. Finally you have a rod holder that is part and parcel of the configuration. The rod holder works well with the tray and cup holder mentioned previously. All of this means that you SHOULD never miss the opportunity to land a fish!

I am not going to insult your intelligence, there are alternatives available. There are plenty available from camping shops and are generally cheaper but you are compromising and do you want to do that? Michigan's Ausable River is a large river with awesome character and impressive hatches. This river is one of the finest trout fisheries in the nation. It also becomes a tremendous steelhead fishery throughout its last few miles below Foote Dam. The Au Sable's productive water is made up of the North, South, and main branches. It is a large and in some areas powerful river. Prolific hatches, quality trout, and heavy runs of steelhead make this river a famous place.

I am going fishing with River Scout Guide Service on the Au Sable river today in search for trout with the flies that Al Ritt custom tied for me specifically for this scheduled trip. I was so excited last night that I could hardly sleep...I explained to a friend that a day of dry fly fishing for trout is like other women getting excited about spending a day at the spa!

TROUT FISHING:

EARLY SEASON: (starts at ice out)

The early season can change from day to day...chilly and overcast to sunny and warm. The fish begin to feed heavily when the water temp reaches 55F. Hendricksons fire up the big fish and super trout hunt crayfish and forage fish with serious intent. We suggest a 4 or 5 wt rod for dry fly work and a 6 or 7 with sinking line for streamers. Early season hatches include Hendricksons, Mahoganies, March Browns, Sulphurs, Caddis, and Stone Flies.

MIDDLE SEASON:

The middle season begins on June 1. Sulphurs are still hatching, but brown drakes, Isonychia, and Hexagenia Limbata ("hex") take center stage. Streamer fishing is best at dawn or dusk. The large dorsata stonefly (size 4) hatches at this time and deer hair mice start producing heavy fish at night or on cloudy days. Caddis, assorted stone flies, and Light Cahills are on the water. Local ponds and lakes offer some great bass and bluegill fishing during the summer.

LATE SEASON:

The late season begins with the White Fly (Ephoron leukon and album) around August 14. Streamer fishing picks up again in mid September with aggressive browns in full spawning colors whacking large sculpin and crayfish patterns.

While there is not any known statistics of anglers that die or get hurt pursuing their passion of fishing, we have all read the stories in local papers. What are the causes? Usually heart attacks or heart disease are the biggest killers. Every 20 seconds someone dies of heart disease alone.

Dawn from Elizabeth Halsey Boutique, located in Newaygo Mi, did an amazing job organizing and heading a fashion show during the Newaygo Troutfest to benefit the NCCS Camp Newaygo for girls. Many area businesses participated and showcased their outdoor based fashions for everyone to see. I had so much fun modeling a winter white camouflage wedding dress from Miller Bridal. I had no idea how beautiful camouflage could look printed on satin and sewn into a formal gown. Camo seems to be the latest craze for many outdoors women. Weddings don't have to be traditional anymore...more and more women are personalizing their special day and making a statement of who they are...and this is a good thing! I am truely amazed at how many outdoors women I meet through She's So Fly appearances. Women seeking to improve their outdoor skills can now register for the 14th annual Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW) summer program, held Friday, June 3, through Sunday, June 5, in Big Bay, a picturesque community overlooking Lake Superior 30 miles north of Marquette.

Sponsored by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, this BOW program offers instruction in more than two dozen kinds of outdoor activities, including kayaking, canoeing, fishing, mountain biking, fly-tying, archery, geocaching, boating and birding.

Volunteer BOW instructors provide basic and advanced instruction that is uniquely tailored to each participant's individual ability, helping the participants learn the basics in a short amount of time.

The $175 registration fee includes all food and lodging, as well as most equipment and supplies (except as noted in the registration materials). Participants will be housed in a dorm-style facility at the universally-accessible Big Bay Health Camp, with numerous amenities, including a pool, sauna, tennis courts, hiking and biking trails and easy access to Lake Superior. The BOW summer program also includes special evening programs, such as birding hikes, group bonfires and more.

Becoming an Outdoors-Woman workshops are for women, 18 and older, who wish to learn outdoor skills in a relaxed, noncompetitive atmosphere. Early registration is recommended as the workshops tend to fill quickly. A limited number of BOW Scholarships are available to help low-income participants with the cost of registration. I am Mike Mordas. I started Muskie Train about eight years ago as a hobby and it turned into a great little business. Their are two people that build lures and manage the business; that is myself and my right hand man Trent Tesmer.

Here is the story in short. I have been an avid fisherman and woodworker for a long time. At sometime it dawned on me to combine my two passions.

I started playing around making lures. After a couple of tries I came up with the Mordas Minnow, a 6 inch jointed bait. Pictured below are the Mordas Minnow, Big Ed and the Super M. but these were all early baits

I made some Mordas Minnows for myself and they caught fish. I made some for my friends and they caught fish. So, I decided to try to make some lures to sell. I bought enough material to make 100 baits. I told myself that if I could sell a hundred baits I would make another batch. Well, that first year year I made 740 baits. Boy was i excited and Muskie Train has grown every year since then.

As Muskie Train was growing, my full time job was teaching woodworking at Hudson High School in Hudson, Ohio. One year, I had a class with a kid in by the name of Trent Tesmer. Trent and I hit it off because we both loved to fish.I have to tell you, that everyday I tried to teach to an objective and everyday Trent tried to get me off of the objective by talking fishing. Trent finished up his high school career and moved onto college. At the same time Muskie Train was growing and I needed some help. I ran into Trent at a fishing show, imagine that and asked him to come to work. The rest is history. Since Trent as joined the team, we have been steadily growing every year.

Muskie Train is my full time career. Events occur throughout your life that change the direction of the path you take. I am firm believer that things happen for a reason and that God will point in the direction that he wants you to go. You may not understand that direction at first but God has a bigger plan for you. Follow those directions and you will get to where you want to go. So come on board the Muskie Train and lets make some memories together. Forget about the pressures of life and enjoy the great outdoors. Hopefully, a Muskie Train lure will help you to create a memory of a lifetime!

Most people look at their bank accounts with great attention and assess how much money they have to spend, to invest, and to give away… But, they don’t look at their time the same way, and end up wasting this incredibly valuable resource. In fact, time is much more valuable than money because you can use your time to make money, but you can’t use money to purchase more time.

Time is the great equalizer… Each day has only 24 hours - nobody has any more than anyone else. Everyone, from poets to presidents, fills those hours, one after the other, until they are all filled up. Every single minute is unique, and once gone, can never be regained.

People often say, “I don’t have the time to…” Fill in the blank with whatever you like: exercise, make dinner, write a book, start a company, run for political office, enjoy the outdoors by fishing or hunting. What makes these people think that they have less time than anyone else? Of course they don’t. We all have the same 24 hours in each day and make real decisions about how we spend them. If you really want to get in shape, then carve out time to exercise. If you want to write a book, then pick up a pen and do it. If you want to run for president, then get started. And, if you want to enjoy the outdoors and fish or hunt, then make a plan, act and do. It isn’t going to happen if you plan your day around your favorite TV shows or spend hours updating your Facebook page. These are entertaining distractions that eat up your irreplaceable time.

For instance, there is a woman named Audrey Carlson several years ago who was struggling to figure out how to spend time with her friends and take care of her growing family. She started a group called “Chop and Chat.” Every Sunday six friends got together to cook at a member’s home. Each member brought the ingredients to make a different recipe that was then split into six portions. Members took home six different main courses for the week. Chop and Chat was an inventive way for the women to cook together, socialize, and prepare meals for their families. Folks, you can apply this same concept for your interests.

There is an oft-quoted saying that "time is money." You can interpret this to mean that time is a valuable currency.
