Remember summer as a kid, not a care in the world, running around and spending all of the daylight hours outside enjoying all of the nature around you? As you get older, everyone has their list of things they wish to accomplish before they reach a certain age. Whitewater rafting is one of those things that should be on your list as it is a great summer vacation. What makes it so great?

You will feel like a kid all over again when you whitewater raft. The wind in your face, water splashing all over, and you paddling for your life, can make you feel like you did when you were a kid, peddling your bike with the wind blowing in your hair. It’s a great experience, one that is hard to compare to any other as you grow older and hold on to your memories that you are so fond of.

Another great reason is that you will be spending time in some of the most beautiful parts of the world. Rivers carve through the world, causing gorges and other beautiful landscapes that you will not see anywhere else. The most popular rafting areas are the ones with the most spectacular views, some that you will only see once in your life and the ones that will never leave your mind.

It’s a great workout. Even if you are not in any shape, you can still whitewater rafting. The next day your body will feel sore because you will be paddling through the river at high speeds, giving your upper body a good workout. This is great for your body as it is important to spend time outside and give your body a workout.

You can spend time with those that are close to you. Whitewater rafting gives you the chance to have a large group of people, whether they are your family, friends, colleagues, or anybody else. You will share memories, bond, and get to know each other even better when you are rafting down a river. It’s a great experience for people of all ages, even if they are scared of water.

Whitewater rafting is a great summer vacation with the many joys it brings to everybody. It’s a way to build memories, share experiences, feel like a kid again and spend time outdoors. You can check whitewater rafting off of your list of things to do after you have experienced it this summer.

A Glory Hole

This is not a natural phenomenon, but still extraordinary. Glory holes are used for dam's to drain excess water during dry seasons. This is the largest one of them all in the world, it is located in Lake Berryessa, Napa County, California. It is used very rarely, but it is quite the sight to see it being put to use.

I joined some of my fellow anglers at Brook's park yesterday evening to receive little divine help for this years trout fishing season by attending a "Blessing Of The Poles" ceremony. This ceremony is held each year during the Newaygo Troutfestival. Find out more information at www.NewaygoTroutfest.com.

Fishing activity ratchets up a notch, today, April 24, as trout season opens on Type 1 and Type 2 streams and Type A and Type D inland lakes statewide in Michigan.

Trout fishing on opening day of trout season is one of the most long-standing traditions in Michigan. This is a day when people gather with friends and family to celebrate an outdoor heritage.

In addition, walleye, pike and muskellunge seasons open on inland waters of the Lower Peninsula. And anglers may begin catching - and immediately releasing - bass in all Lower Peninsula waters, too.

Anglers are reminded that they must have an all-species fishing license to possess trout or fish on designated trout waters. Creel and size regulations vary. Please check the 2010 Michigan Fishing Guide for the regulations that apply to particular lakes and streams.

Surf fisherman catches and releases estimated 550-pound shark

Will Smith—the fisherman, not the actor–was fishing for sharks past midnight on a Florida beach a couple weeks ago when his reel started singing as the line started racing out to indicate a huge fish. He strapped on a fishing harness and, with the help of Bill Dunlop, held on for a 45-minute battle that resulted in a prized catch.

Smith beached a behemoth mako shark measuring 10 feet, 8 inches in length with a 60-inch girth. The expert shark anglers measured the massive mako and took the incredible photos you see here before reviving and releasing the shark, so there isn’t an accurate weight.

But according to some weight-estimate formulas, a mako measuring 10 feet to the fork of the tail with a 60-inch girth would weigh 540 pounds.

William Fundora, president of the conservation-minded South Florida Shark Club, which first broke the news of the catch, estimated the shark at 550 pounds.

Catching sharks from the beach at night is a popular fishing activity in Florida, especially with the Internet making it easy to obtain how-to and where-to knowledge about the sport.

Anglers are using their ingenuity, too, utilizing kayaks to paddle out past the surfline to drop their baits, according to Sport Fishing Magazine.

As for the exact location where Smith landed the huge mako, that will remain a secret, what with the month-long Big Hammer Shark Tournament starting Friday.

Not surprisingly, fellow anglers commenting on the catch on the South Florida Shark Club forumwere amazed by the enormity of the shark.

“I knew it was a nice fish when it hit,” Smith wrote on the club’s website. “[After setting the hook] she starts burning line out with about 40 to 45 pounds of drag on her. She makes a nice solid run as I put the heat to her, and finally she slows down and I crank like a madman to keep that line tight. During the entire fight, she made me drag every inch of her back in, bull-dogging me.”

Dunlop, meanwhile, wasn’t just a bystander. He helped hold on to Smith so the shark wouldn’t drag him into the water.

“During the fight, I had to sit on the ground behind Will and hold his harness because this shark was pulling 40 pounds of drag,” Dunlop wrote.

The fish finally tired as it came close to shore. Upon grabbing the leader, Dunlop got tossed around a bit until Smith was able to tail rope the fish and ensure the catch.

“What an awesome sight—that cobalt blue body, huge eyes staring you down, and those teeth,” Dunlop wrote. “It was the most beautiful shark I have ever seen … She swam away fine after only a few minutes of holding her face into the waves.”

Added Smith, “There is nothing better than to watch that behemoth swim off freely.”

Homemade Natural Insect Repellents

By learning new, healthier ways to avoid insects, you can be outside as much as you want. Lifestyle changes combined with Herbal repellents are crucial to coexisting with bugs without coming to harm.

Here are a few easy & pleasant repellent recipes you can make at home:

Combine in a 16 oz bottle:
15 drops lavender oil
3-4 Tbsp of vanilla extract
1/4 Cup lemon juice.
Fill bottle with water.
Shake.

Homemade Mosquito Repellent

1/4 cup vegetable oil mixed with these essential oils (mix and store in a spray bottle):
8 drops cedar
5 drops eucalyptus
4 drops lavender
2 drops rosemary
2 drops juniper
1 drop peppermint
1 drop cinnamon
1 drop clove

Vanilla Mosquito Repellent

Ingredients: Vanilla extract
Cost: Less than $5 at grocery store
Directions:
Apply some vanilla extract or vanilla essence to your pulse points.

Lavender Mosquito Repellent

Ingredients: Fresh lavender (the flower)
Cost: Free (if you have lavender growing in your yard); otherwise Home Depot sells the plant for about $12
Directions:
Rub a lavender flower behind your ears, wrists and neck. Not only will you smell great but mosquitoes will leave you alone.

Lemon Eucalyptus Mosquito Repellent

Ingredients: Lemon eucalyptus oil and sunflower oil or witch hazel
Cost: $9.50 for 8 oz. of lemon eucalyptus oil (can be purchased on Amazon.com)
Directions: Mix 1 part lemon eucalyptus oil for every 10 parts of sunflower oil/witch hazel. Rub or spray on skin.

Garlic Mosquito Repellent

Ingredients: Minced garlic, mineral oil, and lemon juice
Cost: Less than $5
Directions:
Mince a few cloves of garlic then cover with mineral oil. Allow it to sit for at least 24 hours. Next you take a teaspoon of *just the oil* and mix it with 2 cups of water and 1 teaspoon of freshly squeezed lemon juice. Strain through a cheesecloth if you have any floaties then pour into a spray bottle. Shake before each use.

Angolan Witch spider as big as half a house, supposedly migrated from South America. HUGE!!! Eats dogs and cats, etc. Takes several bullets to kill it. This new species of spider has been terrifying facebookers this past month!

Is it real or fake?

Origins: Just a glimpse of this photograph showing a huge Angolan witch spider — said to be so large that it preys on dogs and cats and requires several bullets to kill — is enough to send arachnophobes scrambling for a safe place to hide.

No need to worry, though; this image just a bit of digital fakery. There is no species of arachnid known as an "Angolan witch spider," and even the world's largest spiders aren't nearly as big as the one pictured above. The largest known spider species have a legspan of no more than about 12 inches and in repose will generally fit into the hand of an adult human male.

Multiple sources have repoorted that this picture of a wolf spider (below) was used in creating the image displayed above with the spider on the side of the house. Apparently, features were added, omitted and enhanced with image editing software.

The world’s largest spinning spider discovered. The new species of giant spider is so big that it can eat birds and bats with its four-feet wide web.

The Spider is found in Madagascar and Africa, the growth of spider is more than four inches in diameter which is officially the world’s biggest web spinning spider.

The Spider is named Nephila Komaci. It has the quality of eating insects but it can also prey on small birds, bats and even lizards.

Not poisonous to humans but it could issue a nasty bite. Like many spiders, it is only the females that are the giants, with males up to five times smaller than their mates.

More than 41,000 spider species are known to science with about 400 – 500 new species added each year.

Novelty Lures

Bait is an essential part of fishing. Though we all know someone that knows someone who’s caught a fish without any bait at all (that fish must have been really hungry); that smarmy guy is definitely an exception to the rule. Bait is anything that you put on the end of your fishing hook, or inside the fish trap to attract, lure and catch fish. It ranges from artificial, to natural (not for the squeamish), to impractical and to the downright bizarre.

The History

Humankind has fished since it figured out that things lived in the water, and spearing them is sort of a waste of time. The Egyptians and Chinese were among the first to start using rods, hooks and lines around 2,000 BC. We know that their hooks were made from bone and bronze, and that fishing lures were generally made by individuals from feathers, bronze and lead. Because of this, there was a competitive edge to who could create the best lure, trying to come up with better and more effective ways of luring fish.

By the twentieth century, fishing lures had become mass produced and packaged in fishing sets, though they were still inspired by those used by individual craftsmen. Many fishermen continue to make their own lures despite the rise in manufactured ones. As fishing has become more and more technical – analysing the behaviour and psychology of fish, for instance – the baits and lures have also become more advanced.

Mimicking Real Life

Many lures mimic the fish’s natural food, so the type of bait you use therefore depends on the type of fish that you want to catch. There are varying degrees of precision, while some baits just use the colours of their fishes’ prey, others mimic electronically the movement it makes in the water, while others still are almost an exact replica of the prey. This can vary from a fish, to a duckling bait that mimics a duckling panicking in the water, to an insect that mimics the vibration of their wings. Many anglers feel that these types of lures are the best at attracting fish.

Bizarre Lures

These are the ones that make you think “surely that will never work, can it?” and you’re tempted to try. Take Jake’s Spin-A-Lure, for instance, it looks like a domino with a curve at one end and a hook at the other, or a troll doll lure with hooks on the ends of its hands. Some handmade bait also border on the bizarre, with people making baits that resemble animals, but ones that fish are unlikely to eat, such as a chipmunk.

Helicopter Lures

The helicopter lure is a famous lure from Roland Martin that divided fishermen- some just thought they were ridiculous and never even gave them a go, but others have and managed to catch substantial fish using them in a particular way, for instance when fishing somewhere with lily pads.

Sea Fishing For Beginners

Picture it: the sea is crashing on to the boat over and over and over, and suddenly your rod starts to twitch, and then bow. As the line cuts through the water, you see a beautiful, glittering, Black Marlin and she is all yours to reel in... if you can persuade her, and she is not going to come easy. Your heart pounds and you can feel the adrenalin pulsing through every part of your body- sound like your idea of fun?

There are two main ways to do deep sea fishing, namely taking a chartered boat, or to go out on your own boat. A chartered boat will obviously take less organisation than trying to organize taking a boat out by yourself, as well as the fact that a chartered boat is more likely to have better facilities.

Preparation

Regardless of whether you decide to take a chartered boat or do it yourself, there are a few things that you must do to prepare yourself for a deep sea fishing trip. You should dress appropriately, in clothes that dry quickly, or a bathing suit. A towel is a good idea too. You will also need sunscreen whatever the weather, as the sun reflects off the ocean and intensifies the light. Make sure you reapply throughout the day so you don’t burn. If you know that you are prone to seasickness or get motion sickness, then make sure you take relevant medication beforehand.

Chartered Boats

There are a wide variety of different chartered boats, so if you want to fish a certain type of fish, you can. A quick search online and you should be able to find the right sort of fishing boat for you. It is advisable to book a place on the boat as soon as you can, because they have a tendency to fill up quickly. They often come equipped with all the fishing equipment you may need, though there shouldn’t be a problem if you wish to bring your own gear. Check if there isn’t anything that they don’t supply so you know in advance.

It is also a good idea to get tips from the crew, as they will likely to be knowledgeable about the fish and fishing in that particular area.

On Your Own

Only for the very brave, going out on your own takes organisation and planning. Experience in deep sea fishing is advisable, as it can be dangerous- you should know how to read the weather, have necessary safety equipment, and be cautious when handling large, boisterous fish. This also includes having the right equipment, as deep sea fishing equipment is stronger than freshwater in order to cope with the heavier fish.

Whether you’re fishing in your local area or somewhere further afield, you must know the laws and regulations of when and where you can fish, what licenses you need, which fish and how much can be kept. You should also get an idea of where you will go. Ask advice of the locals, and watch the signs, for instance, a reef will be teeming with life and will have large game fish nearby.

Two million Car tire's dumped on the Ocean Floor!

Approximately two million old car tire's are on the ocean floor off Fort Lauderdale in the US, dumped in the 1970s with the intent of creating an artificial reef. The tires are now scouring the ocean floor and wedging against the natural reef, killing coral.

"There are no really historical records of the volume and type of material that was spilled in the oceans before the establishment of an anti-dumping law. However, it is estimated that in 1968, 38 million tons of excavated material, 4.5 million tons of industrial waste, 4.5 million sewage sludge, 100 million tons of petroleum-based product (plastic), 2 to 4 tones of chemical waste, more than 1 million tons of heavy metals were released into the ocean. The U.S. archive shows that between 1946 and 1970 over 55,000 containers of radioactive waste were disposed in 3 sites of dumping of the Pacific Ocean. In addition, 34,000 tons of radioactive wastes were disposed in 3 sites of dumping of the U.S. east coast between 1951 and 1962. No law on dumping radioactive waste has been put into force before 1972."

No one, as of yet, has bothered to remove the waste...

If you think that is bad, just read below what others have found washed up on shoreline from the ocean floor:

It’s pretty impossible to go to the beach without finding a piece of trash tossing about in the surf, or half buried in the sand. Unfortunately, with monstrosities like the Great Pacific Garbage Patch swirling about offshore, it’s unlikely that our coastlines will be trash-free any time soon.

And with the recent news of possible Japanese tsunami debris spotted off the Canadian coast, ocean pollution is no longer a problem countries can tackle on their own. Last year, the Ocean Conservancy decided to conduct a massive, international experiment to help bring awareness to the big problem of marine debris.

During the 2011 International Coastal Cleanup, volunteers in multiple countries trolled the world’s shorelines, picking up every kind of trash imaginable. And as they collected it, they kept a tally of the most common items that washed up on shore.

Here’s what they found:

“Our volunteers picked up enough food packaging for a person to get takeout for breakfast, lunch and dinner every day for the next 858 years,” said Vikki Spruill, Ocean Conservancy’s President and CEO. “Ocean trash is human-generated, preventable and one of the biggest threats to our ocean and waterways.”

And trash wasn’t all they found. Volunteers encountered reptiles, birds, invertebrates, mammals, fish, and coral species that were killed by plastic bags, fishing line, plastic bottles, and other trash in the ocean.

Although the tsunami is responsible for the spread of some of this debris, most of it is preventable. Making sure glass, plastic, and metals end up in the recycling bin is a big first step. Refusing to litter, even paper or small wrappers, can also reduce ocean pollution dramatically.

“The Cleanup shows beaches suffered from marine debris before the tsunami and will continue to until our vision of Trash Free Seas is realized,” Spruill said. “We must make our ocean more resilient for when unthinkable, unpreventable disasters do occur.

Gun manufacturing and sales is big business in the United States — as it turns out, one of the biggest.

In terms of gun ownership, the U.S. is the runaway global leader. There are nearly nine firearms for every 10 American citizens; this proportion is 40% higher than that of Yemen, which ranks second in the world for gun ownership.

Every year, nearly 9 million firearms enter the U.S. market. 5.5 million guns are manufactured domestically, and roughly 95% are eventually sold to Americans. An additional 3.2 million firearms are imported into the U.S. and sold through licensed firearms dealers. Currently there are more than 130,000 of these licensed dealers in the country; to put that number in perspective, the U.S. is also home to 144,000 gas stations, 36,500 grocery stores, and 14,000 McDonald’s restaurants.

Want more comparisons? The firearms industry generates roughly $32 billion in revenue every year — $10 billion more than the Ford Motor Company — and employs 98,000 people, five times more than Google Inc. Furthermore, the gun industry is continuing to grow at an astonishing rate. Connecticut-based Sturm, Ruger & Co., the country’s fourth largest firearm manufacturer, recorded a $180 million increase in revenue since 2004.

The U.S. is #1 when it comes to gun ownership in the entire world, with 88.8 firearms per 100 people. In fact, the second country on the list of most gun owners per person is Yemen – at a whopping 40% lower ownership rate than the U.S.

Whatever your politics, guns are one of America’s biggest industries.

One: Manufacturing. Nearly 5.5 million guns are manufactured annually in the United States and 95% of these are sold to Americans. An additional 3.2 million guns are imported to the U.S. from other countries.

Two: Retail. There are nearly 130,000 licensed firearm dealers in the United States. Compare this to nearly 144,000 gas stations, about 36,500 grocery stores, and just over 14,000 McDonalds.

Three: The Bottom Line. The ammunition and firearms industry pulled in about $32 billion each year and employed 98,000 people. That’s $10 billion more than Ford made in the same year and five times more employees than Google. And the gun industry isn’t weakening – since 2004, major gun manufacturing company Sturm Ruger’s alone saw their revenue increase $183 million.

Pet photography is becoming more popular than ever!

Pets play a big part in many households so it's no surprise that pet photography is more popular than ever. All pet owners love their pets and share a lot of happiness with them.

Pet photography is one of most the interesting types of photography. Photographing your pet can be a fun experience, but it is not always easy to capture your pet’s true adorable personality.

You should keep few things in mind while taking snaps your animal:

Experiment

Take your time and enjoy the session, try different approaches, angles and compositions. Just because you own a camera, it does not mean you know how to take great portraits. There are a lot more attributes to making a great photograph happen behind the lens, so shoot a lot you will have time to worry about the results later.

If you can’t quite get a good photo after experimenting with your camera, then I strongly suggest you hire a professional photographer. Most studio rates are very reasonable for pets. This way you will have added insurance that you wont't embarrass your pet and yourself with poor quality self made portraits such as this photo of a cat named "Miss Katiya".

Use Natural Light

If possible always use natural light when taking your pet in picture. Avoid flash, as flash burst can, not only cause red-eye, but also frighten the animal. Instead try to go outside or, if it is not possible, in a room well lit by a large window.

Keep the Eyes Sharp

Having sharp eyes is important in any kind of portraits photography. As they say, “Eyes are the Window to the Soul” and pets eye can be very expressive. So make sure to focus on your pet’s eyes and keep the tack sharp

Give them some thing to play with

Pets simply cannot resist running around, much to the disappointment of anyone hoping to photograph them. Luckily its not very hard to capture their attention either. A string tied to something at one end is enough to make the kitten curious as can be. Why not give it something like this to hold its attention while you shoot some photographs? A little help from a friend would always make things simpler for you as a pet photographer. If you are photographing a puppy, a ball would be the right prop in most cases.

Patience

Photographing pets is a lot like photographing kids. Their emotions are never fake and you just can’t have them pose when they don’t want to! A photographer needs to be quite the psychologist when photographing pets, along with a lot of patience at times. When photographing someone else’s pets, it is definitely a great help to have the owner around as he or she talks to the pets, making them comfortable and encouraging them to play. Why not get a few images of the pets with their owners as well?

Go to Them

It is very important that you pet feels comfortable and at ease, so instead of forcing him to come to you go to him. Most important is to get down to his level; We all know how a dog looks when viewed from above, this is the way we always see them. Show us the way they see world! Sit on the floor or lie on your belly and remember to shoot from HIS eye level or below.

Give Value to their Character

You know your pet better than anyone else, and a successful picture is one that conveys the character of its subject. If you have a lazy cat show him yawning, if your animal is of a playful type show him in action performing his favorite trick.

Go Macro

Put on that long lens and fill the frame with your pet’s face and fur, close up shots often make beautiful animal portrait.

Photo Gear

It is good to shoot with a moderate zoom lens when shooting pets or even children for that matter. You don’t want to get so close to the animals so as to make them very conscious of your presence. Pets have the habit of making sudden dart-like movements!

Schedule a Pet Portrait Session

Professional pet portraits are typically worth every dime you invest, due to the experience and equipment a studio offers. If you are longing for a formal pet portrait shot, try to schedule the photo session when you’re animal is somewhat sleepy or has just woke up it will be much easier to keep him still then. If you want a more dynamic shot then pick up a time when your pet is energetic.

Risso's Dolphin Found On The Shore Of Sardinia West Coast

Yesterday a few fishermen came across the remains of a Risso's dolphin (Grampus griseus), a dolphin unlike other species, shows a rounded head. Adult Risso's dolphins are usually dark gray with extensive white scarring. The scars can be scratches, splotches, or circular marks and, in some animals, can be so extensive that the entire body appears to be white. This scarring may come from bites from other Risso's dolphins, squid bites, or parasites.

This specimen was a little more than 2 meters long. It was discovered a considerable distance from the line of the sea, within a narrow bay where the current game brings numerous shipwrecks. This dolphin was beached and probably a result of the strong disturbance in recent days with waves reported at over 7 meters.

This dolphin had a large laceration with wide excision of tissue in the body in the back, perhaps due to the impact with the keel or the propellers of a ship. The Grampi are dolphins that can come from adults to over 4 meters in length and 600 kg in weight, live in small groups of 3-50 who represent "families" and prefer coastal areas

deep near drop-offs where they can find their favorite food, usually cephalopods such as octopus or squid. Little is known of the migration path of these dolphins near where this specimen was found, but some have reported sightings seasonal movement from north to south near Compiano, and sightings in Europe date back to the summer of Scotland and in the winter they can be spotted in Mediterranean waters.

Giant squid filmed alive in deep sea for first time

"The giant squid was so beautiful that it seemed to sparkle," Tsunemi Kubodera, one of the lead scientists on the expedition, told reporters. / Discovery

The mysterious and mythical giant squid has never been spotted alive in the deep sea -- until now. A team from Japan's National Science Museum has captured footage of a giant squid in its natural habitat: nearly a third of a mile below the surface of the ocean. It is the first such video of its kind.

Giant squids, which can grow up to 60 feet in length, have been found dead on beaches and photographed in the ocean and -- more often -- on the surface. But scientists have never seen video of the strange creature below the waves, until a mission put together by the Japan Broadcasting Corp. (NHK) and the Discovery Channel filmed the elusive beast off the coast of Japan.

"The giant squid was so beautiful that it seemed to sparkle," Tsunemi Kubodera, one of the lead scientists on the expedition, told reporters. "I was so thrilled when I saw it first hand, but I was confident we would because we rigorously researched the areas we might find it, based on past data."

Kubodera, a zoologist and giant squid expert with Japan's National Museum of Science, has spent years searching for the huge sea creatures. His team filmed a giant squid on the surface of the ocean in 2006.

Using a manned submarine, Kubodera and his colleagues took 100 trips below the surface to spot the stealthy squid. The team used a specially designed camera to capture high definition images in deep water.

Giant squids are predators who hunt in the deep sea further down than light can reach. Because of this, acquiring footage of the creatures has been a tremendous challenge, and has led to many rumors and myths about the animals. It is believed that the ancient myth of the Kraken, a sea monster large enough to devour ships and the sailors on them, originated with the giant squid.

The video will be aired in America on the Discovery Channel on January 27.
